The Simulation Hypothesis

Previous Chapter

“It is.”

“The calculating machines we never built are provably Turing complete! You know what that means, Twilight?”

“Well, it means that they could theoretically solve every computable problem.”

“Exactly! But not only that! They could also simulate every computable problem. Twilight! We are computable problems!”

“We are ponies!” Twilight protested. It wasn’t a particularly nuanced reply, but it definitely needed to be said. But Cold merely made a dismissive gesture with her left hoof.

“Same thing. Ponies are computable. Just complicated. Twilight, imagine if we had gone head-first into this technology! Perhaps we would be powerful enough to simulate everything! Perhaps other ponies are powerful enough to simulate everything! Right now! Twilight! Who says that those simulated ponies wouldn’t be conscious??”

...

“In any case,” Twilight said calmly, “you cannot actually publish this story. Writing explicit sexual fiction about real ponies is illegal.”

Cold Front repeated her dismissive gesture. “Wasn’t going to do that anyway.” She took another sip of her tea. “But you’ll read other things I write, won’t you?”
