Chapters Uninterrupted, Sonorous continued to explain how the musical tone captivated her. How it seemed to drown out the entire world, leaving only the melody to fill the void. By now Octavia had to hide her face, considering it now resembled a bouquet of roses. Vinyl was munching on her haywich, trying to look nonchalant, as she stared at the dusky sky.
Sonorous took a drink of cider and was about to speak again until she noticed the reactions of the two mares. Quite annoyed by the apparent lack of interest, a mischievous smirk appeared on her face. "It's a shame I didn't meet th at pony, probable for the best though. " "You know what they say, famous ponies are stuck up," Sonorous sneered in a matter-of-fact tone.
A stupor Vinyl spewed cider all over the window she had been looking out. Octavia brought her face to stare at Sonorous, any trace of embarrassment was gone. These reactions confirmed that Octavia was the mystery performer. However feeling that she had been played the foal, she wasn't done yet. Ignoring Octavia's shocked stare, instead asking if Vinyl was ok.
Vinyl wheezed an acknowledgement, although she was still hacking. Satisfied, her attention turned back to a fuming Octavia. The air was so tense that neither of them noticed Pinkie Pie. The pink mare was peeking over the edge of the table, almost as if watching a drama unfolding.
A blue mare, noticing the ruckus in the corner booth, trotted toward the disputing mares. Meanwhile both Octavia and Sonorous continued to exchange verbal stabs at each other. Pinkie Pie, hearing the sound of hooves behind her, spun around to stare at Mrs. Cake. The pony cleared her throat to get the attention of the feuding mares.
Startled, they turned to see a blue mare with an apron on. Her mane and tail was stripped pink/light pink. Her mane looked as if somepony styled it to resemble a descending line of wavy icing on a cake. She wore a pair of pink pearled earrings. Her cutie mark was three pink frosted cupcakes with cherries on top of them.
Mrs. Cake spoke in a soft but stern voice, telling the mares that they had to leave due to their disruptive behavior. Sonorous merely shrugged, got up and left for the door. Octavia, not nearly done chewing her out, rushed after her. Vinyl reluctantly dropped the bits for the bill, apologizing to Mrs. Cake, then trotted out after the bickering mares.
Darkness now blanketed the sky as the three ponies trotted down the street. "What's your problem Sonorous," Octavia demanded as she caught up to the departing mare. Sonorous turned to glare at Octavia, only when Vinyl caught up, did she speak. "I don't know about either of you but I don't care to be taken the fo a l," Sonorous retorted.
Both mares gawking back, Sonorous took the opportunity to continue. "I was trying to locate the musician that was at the theater," she fumed. " H owever you two let me ramble on like a filly with a crush." "Don't think I didn't notice how each of you were acting while I was talking." Sonorous continued to lay into them, her voice rising in volume.
"Worst yet, you Octavia, hung your head like I was boring you." "I know that you must be tired of praise all the time, that doesn't mean you can just ignore ponies ," Sonorous was now shouting. A pony stuck his head out the window and yelled for silence. A very "colorful" response from Sonorous met the pony's ears.
Shutting the window, he muttering incoherently as he did so. Heaving now Sonorous started to turn and leave however she stopped when Octavia spoke up. Her voice carried a mixture of anger and a hint of resentment. " How dare you pres ume to know me, you have no idea ! " Octavia retorted. "You think that just because I can play an instrument, praise is shoveled upon me."
"You unso ph isti c ated dullard, are you really so blind to think that all musicians are so famous?!" Octavia yelled in a indignant tone. "I'm so sorry that you felt perturbed , you cretin, " Octavia sneered. Tears beginning to stream from her eyes, Octavia fell silent as she hung her head, silently sobbing.
Vinyl stepped forward, "I thought you'd be surprised that the pony we were meeting was the pony that you were looking for . Vinyl confessed. " Y ou react ed quite unexpectedly from what I thought you would have ," she continued. "I forgot that you were still griffinized ."
Vinyl gave a slight sigh. Sonorous stared from Vinyl to Octavia before speaking, " Y ea, its been quite the struggle today, " Sonorous groaned, tired of apologizing. Several minutes passed before the silence was broken. "You don't expect me to accept such an inadequate excuse," Octavia croaked.
Sonorous narrowed her eyes and retorted angrily, "I h onestly don't care if you believe me or not." Beginning to turn away, she stopped, when Octavia clear her throat. " Y ou wouldn't happen to play an instrument?" Octavia asked sternly.
"Why do you ask " Sonorous replied in a puzzled voice. Octavia pointed a hoof to the Bass Clef upon her flank. Mentally giving herself a facehoof, Sonorous stated that she'd dabbled a little. "In that case, I challenge you to a musical duel , " Octavia spat out, hateful eyes glared at Sonorous. Not relaxing her stern expression, Sonorous gave a hysteric laugh. "You've got to be kidding me," she jeered.
Octavia wouldn't back down, her pride wouldn't allow such actions."I'm a proud musician , I've been insulted, and I demand satisfaction," Octavia gave a low growled. Sonorous' ears perked up at the challenge, her mocking face turned to a solemn one. With a stern tone in her voice, she spoke, "you demand satisfaction, very well I accept your challenge."
Without waiting for an answer, she turned on a hoof, and trotted away from the two mares. Sonorous reached the edge of town where her "borrowed" wagon sat. Entering the wagon, she closed and locked the door, shutting the blinds, then set to making a secret compartment to store information for her royal coup.
Her horn blazed to life as she sliced a small block of wood off each leg. Quickly whittling a smaller square on all four of the blocks that would later fit into the hollowed legs. Next she began to hollow out the legs. Replacing the make shift caps to hide the new compartment in the bed legs. She stepped upon her bed, pawing to try and soften it up. With a low growl of annoyance, she dropped her disguise, before laying down to sleep.
The sounds of chirping birds, once again disturbed Chrysalis' slumber, signaled the new day. Getting up from her bed, she stretched her legs, like a cat would. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she strolled to the door. Reaching for the knob but paused when she saw her black hoof. With a sigh and a blink, her Sonorous persona appeared into existence once again.
Opening the door, she stepped out, and immediately shielded her eyes from the bright sun. Once her eyes adjusted, she made her way into town. She decided to do some reconnaissance of the town. She passed several vendors on the street, stopping briefly to see their wares. As Sonorous trotted into a store, the salesmare approached and began their sales pitch.
Turning to look at her with a blank stare, Sonorous asked dryly if they sold parchments and quills. Not deterred by the cold customer, she nodded and waved a hoof toward the back of the store. The shelves contained quills of every shape and size, parchment of different lengths, and rows of inkwells.
After picking up a cheap saddle bag they sold beside the check out. Sonorous started picking up quills, rolled parchments, and several inkwells. After trotting through the check out, the clerk rang up the total cost. Without waiting for the amount, Sonorous narrowed her eyes and began to cast a hypnotic spell.
Green energy snaked up Sonorous' horn, before leaping off and through the pony's head, into their mind. The eyes of the pony shone a light green for a split second before returning to normal. Don't worry about it ma'am, I'll take care of it, the pony droned.
Completing the transaction as normal, handing the receipt to Sonorous, even calling out for her return as she left the store. A couple of minutes after Sonorous left, the bewitched pony was released from her spell. With a blink, the clerk went along with his job, completely ignorant of what just transpired.
Continuing down the road, Sonorous was humming a tone of a malicious nature. Sonorous squinted as she spotted a dust cloud that appeared to be heading toward her. Rolling her eyes at yet another interference, Sonorous stopped and waited in defiance of whatever raced toward her. Mentally wanting to pulverize the unfortunate creature that dares impede her.
The dust cloud racing every closer, soon Sonorous was able to make out a rainbow maned pegasus. A strained sigh escaped her mouth, "am I doomed to meet all those insufferable pest," Sonorous muttered under her breath. Now only several meters separated her from the rainbow maned pegasus, a collision seemed imminent. The rainbow pegasus was shouting now, advising everypony to get out of the way.
In response, Sonorous conjured a magical net that caught the pegasus in mid-air, encasing the mare in magic. "What do you think your doing, you need to get to safety," demanded the pegasus. A hostile sneer replaced her contentment as Sonorous slightly tilted her head to see past her.
A dozen or so timber wolves were stampeding down the street. A nonchalant huff flared from Sonorous' nostrils. Looking back at the pegasus, she dryly replied, "is th is all ? " Lifting the pegasus above her head before rotating the mare 180° to face the stampede. The magic that encased her began to expand into a sphere.
Sonorous' horn took on a deeper emerald glow, a result of pouring more magic into the hovering sphere. As the wolves barreled down the street, the front potion of the sphere began to glow. The pegasus shut her eyes tightly preparing for the worst. Several seconds past but when nothing seemed to happen, she opened her eyes and gawked.
The sphere was now blasting small needle like slivers at the timber wolves. The needles sped off with such velocity, instantly dispatching the wolves. To any on looker, the barrage would have appeared as a blur except to the mare in the bubble. She had the best view of the lot, she could see the formation of the needles.
Soon the needles stopped as the last wolf fell into a crumbled pile of lumber. When the dust settled, a huge pile of mangled wood remained. Rotating the pegasus back to face her, Sonorous lowered the pegasus to hover inches above the ground. The rainbow mare was dumbstruck at what she just witnessed. Her mouth shone a huge grin, her irises so huge, they threatened to burst from her sockets.
"THAT WAS AMAZING!" the mare screeched, before she started to recount the events in a stuttering frenzy. Sonorous smirked as wide as she could before speaking in a overly sweet tone. "I'm glad you enjoyed the show my little pony." Releasing the mare from her magical cage, she fell to the ground with a soft thud. The impact seemed to have snapped her out of her raving.
Sonorous soon spotted five more ponies climbing over the piles of wood. The purple pony called out, Rainbow Dash, as they closed the gap between them. The rainbow maned pony, identified as Rainbow Dash, turned to call back. The group slowed into a trot as they reached her. "What happened here," the purple pony asked with a concerned look on her face.
"It was amazing Twilight, this pony here took out all the timber wolves," Rainbow Dash spoke as she pointed a hoof behind her. Twilight gave a puzzled look before inquiring who Rainbow dash meant. Spinning around, Rainbow Dash noticed the mysterious mare was gone. "Where did she go ? " Rainbow Dash wondered, her ears drooping in disappointment.
"I really wanted you all to meet her," she groaned. Twilight put a hoof on her friend's shoulder before turning to look at the piles of lumber that laid on the road. Moments later Sonorous reappeared from her teleportation spell. She stood in front of the theater. Sonorous strolled up the stairs to meet with Vinyl and Octavia.
Once inside, she saw a large group of ponies huddled at the base of the stage. Unfazed by the sight, she trotted toward the stage. Reaching its base, she bent her legs in preparation to leap over the huddled ponies. Using her telekinesis, she leaped quite higher then normal. Clearing the obstacle, Sonorous landed onto the stage with a loud thud.
Vinyl poked her head out from behind the curtain and gasped as she saw her standing there. "Hey Sonorous, I'm glad your here maybe you can help us back here," she inquired. Shrugging her shoulders, Sonorous trotted back stage to see that Octavia was tuning the string instruments. When Octavia spotted Sonorous, a smirk spread across her face.
Putting down the instrument, she got up and strolled toward Sonorous. "So why are there ponies huddled at the stage?" Sonorous asked nopony in particular. "Didn't you hear, a pack of tim b er wolves was spotted in P onyville," Vinyl replied, a tone of worry in her voice.
Sonorous feinted a started look, then asked if Octavia was tuning the instruments for their duel. Octavia began to speak but stopped halfway through her statement. "Well we could begin our duel, that is if you don't mind an audience," she stated in a mocking tone. "It doesn't really matter to me , I won't back down" Sonorous grinned.
A sly smile flashed across Octavia's face as she waved a hoof toward the pile of instruments. Putting down her saddlebags, Sonorous looked over the rows of instruments: trumpets, tubas, trombones, flutes, clarinets, violins and much more laid on the floor. Finally she levitated a small figure eight looking case upon a small table. When the case was opened, a violin was revealed inside.
Levitating the instrument and bow into the air, Sonorous nodded in confirmation. Nice choice chimed Octavia as she went to fetch her cello. The three ponies trotted back on stage to face the frightened ponies. The dueling ponies looked at each other, waiting to see who would begin. Octavia waved a casual hoof at Sonorous with a raised eye brow.
Sonorous nodded her head as she raised the instrument up. She rested her jaw on the cushioned base of it, while wrapping a hoof around it's slender neck. Using her magic to levitate the bow, Sonorous lowered it onto the strings. Drawing the bow across the strings, slow at first, producing a deep/calming tune.
The huddled mass of ponies began to lift their heads as the tune fill the theater. Soon Sonorous' tempo increased slightly as she closed her eyes. Her hoof moved gracefully along the violin's neck, holding the strings to produce different pitches. The audience was now completely fixated on the stage, their worries vanishing with each note.
Eyes still closed, Sonorous' melody became more lively. Filling the air with different tones, along with slight changes of tempo. Sonorous brought her melody to a sudden halt. Opening her eyes, she turned her gaze to the cellist. Octavia, slightly impressed by Sonorous' partial performance, only smirked. Taking up her bow, she leaned slightly against her cello and began her rebuttal.
The cello sung out in a deep tone, Octavia started out slow but increased her tempo gradually. The deep melody delivered its own essence of uplifting reverberations and deep soothing decibels. Octavia's song, contained a much more balanced set of octaves. The complete opposite of the violin's wide tone variations. Yet no less beautiful, the cello offered a strong, steady embrace to any who accepted its melody.
After a short piece, Octavia also stopped her playing, waiting for Sonorous to answer her call. Vinyl recognizing that they were building up their performances. Quickly went back stage to get her sample recording board. Vinyl was always on the look out for sounds and music to sample.
Sonorous again raised her violin and continued where she left off. Her hoof moving considerable faster then before as she played. Once again her eyes were closed yet she didn't miss a beat. Hoofing out the notes with precision matching that of a seasoned musician.
Playing by sound alone was her way. She could see in her mind the elegant dance of the music. Every pitch swirling into the next, gracefully adding its melody to the song. This time Octavia joined in with her own brand of musical magic, her lyrics rang out it's benevolent tone.
Vinyl was busy taking samples of the concoction of raw emotional harmony. However, she soon stopped taking samples, finding herself overwhelmed by the music. She stared at the two ponies, mesmerized at the ethereal concert that unfolded right before her eyes. Soon the two compositions slowly began to merge, quickly becoming one giant euphony of pure bliss.
Meanwhile Twilight and her friends tiredly strolled down the road. Exhausted from removing all the timber wolf remains from Ponyville. The six friends immediately stopped as the symphony of music rushed from the theater. The music filled their ears, cradling their souls in a euphoria of warmth. Any trace of exhaustion chased away, replaced by overwhelming energy.
The friends darted into the theater, extremely curious about the alluring music. As they trotted through the doorway, the six gasped as they stared down toward the stage. They saw the crowd of ponies staring at the performers, on stage was Octavia, in center stage, and Vinyl, who was off to the side, along with another pony.
Rainbow Dash squinted at the third pony on stage before her eyes grew wide. She swirled her head toward Twilight and pointed toward the stage. "I know that pony, she's the one that stopped the timber wolves," Rainbow Dash exclaimed. Twilight whipped her neck back to stare upon the stage with new interest.
Starting down the stairs, Twilight was split between being a spectator or meeting the mysterious pony. The remaining friends, feeling the ever flowing ecstasy from the music, followed her. By now the music began it's diminuendo as the beautifully improvised piece came to an end. With a few more strokes of their bows, they finished playing, the last of their melody fading away.
Sonorous opened her eyes and scanned the room. The crowd of ponies stared in awe, tears streaming down their face. Sonorous turned toward Octavia and Vinyl, noticing tears in their eyes as well. The most shocking revelation was that she to, had a tear threatening to escape. Silence now filled the room but for only a second.
Everypony began to clapped and stomped their hooves like never before. Sonorous, still looking toward the two mares, watching Vinyl raise her forehooves in awe. Octavia slowly stood up, Sonorous followed suit, they both faced the crowd and bowed. As Sonorous raised her head, she could smell a massive cloud of love over the crowd.
Nopony would notice if I helped myself to some refreshments she thought. As both ponies took another bow, Sonorous absorbed a big portion of love from the crowd. Octavia, Vinyl, and Sonorous went back stage to put away their instruments. After putting everything away and whipping the tears from their face, Octavia and Vinyl turned toward Sonorous.
"Where in all of Equestria did you learn to play like that," Octavia spoke excitedly. Sonorous, beaming with pride, replied that she was self-taught. Octavia felt a slight twitch of envy but it quickly subsided. Despite the argument the previous day, Octavia was overjoyed that another pony appreciated classical music as she did.
The cheering subsided to a dull chatter that could be heard from the departing crowd. Twilight and friends began to navigate toward the stage. Murmurs, about the performance, filled the air. Comments like: that was astonishing, and who is that mysterious pony was heard from across the crowd. Why were we here anyways, asked a confused pony. To which came an answer from somewhere in the crowd, there were timber wolves in town.
The theater was now empty except for Twilight and her friends. Vinyl poked her head out of the curtain, noticing that most of the ponies have left. trotted back to Octavia and Sonorous, " that was amazing, " Vinyl cheered. For the first time, since Sonorous arrived at Ponyville, she gave a genuine smile.
She levitated her saddlebags back upon her back, before turning to leave. The three mares walk out from back stage when they were confronted by six familiar ponies. "That was a great performance," Twilight exclaimed, " we only wish we could have caught the whole thing." Vinyl described how it started out as a musical duel, then how it was to calm the crowd.
She finished by recounting how it had exploded into an elegant symphony, gushing all the while. A chorus of disapproval came from the six for the timber wolves horrible timing. "I'm sure the whole town would have wanted to attend if they could," Vinyl chimed. Octavia slightly blushed at the comment while Sonorous' smile grew bigger.
Rainbow Dash flew over the group to stand in front of Sonorous. "Your so amazing, first you take down those stampeding tim b er wolves singledhoove d." she squealed. "Then we find out that you can match Octavia in music," Rainbow Dash continued. Sonorous narrowed her eyes in response to Rainbow Dash's high pitched praise.
Twilight cleared her throat, calling for silence, before approaching Sonorous. She began by introducing herself, then her friends, followed by asking for her name. Sonorous introduced herself, inwardly cursing her luck, for having to introduce herself to her enemies. Sonorous' mood drooped slightly but she refused to allow this meeting to ruin it.
"Your praise is admirable but I don't think I could match Octavia, tune for tune ," Sonorous stated. At this Octavia's blush intensified, Sonorous continued, "if you'll e x cuse me I need to drop off my saddlebags." Octavia turning toward Vinyl and Sonorous and suggested that they meet up at Sugarcube Corner later.
They both agreed and after a word of departure, mostly toward Octavia and Vinyl, Sonorous teleported away. After Sonorous left, Twilight approached the two musicians. " Not very chatty is she," Twilight said off hoofed." Pinkie Pie told me that Mrs. Cake asked you three to leave last night." she continued.
Vinyl, slightly embarrassed, told Twilight that is was a misunderstanding. Telling her that Sonorous thought they were messing with her. Vinyl explained that she had been more accustom to a griffon's mentality. At this Twilight turned her head in confusion and asked what she had meant. Continuing on, Vinyl explained that she was a traveler and had returned from Griffonstone.
Pinkie Pie chiming in, to confirm that the griffons were of a rigid nature. At this Twilight put her hoof to her chin, deep in thought. "Well despite that, she did help us in stopping those timber wolves," Rainbow Dash added. "That maybe , " Applejack replied, "but why would she just up and leave afterwards."
"Maybe she's shy around ponies she doesn't know?" Fluttershy proposed. At this, Octavia gave a small chuckle and said, "I don't think "shy" would be the word I'd use." Twilight still deep in thought, made up her mind. She was going to talk to Sonorous, her frigid attitude just now had her concerned.
Tracing the magical residue from Sonorous spell, its trajectory ended at the edge of Ponyville. Her glowing horn confirmed what her five companions was thinking. In a blink, she disappeared, Applejack facedhoofed at Twilight's stubbornness. Moments later, Twilight appeared at the edge of town where Sonorous had traveled to.
Looking around, she spotted a small wagon sitting at the side of town. Trotting up to the door, she raised her hoof and knocked. A cold response echoed from the wagon, Twilight recoiled a little, but knocked again. The door opened and there stood Sonorous, annoyance brimming in her eyes. Twilight felt slightly intimidated by the towering mare.
Sonorous' cold eyes glared at Twilight, "Can I help you princess?" she stated dryly. By this time, Twilight was angry, with a stomp she demanded answers for Sonorous' attitude. Sonorous stood silent, her cold glare drilling into Twilight. Rage was building up within Sonorous, it would be so easy. Invite her in for some tea, then when her guard was down.
Strike her with a full blast of magic to the back of her head. Disposal wouldn't be a problem, the Everfree Forest is just a throw away. Sonorous was snapped out of her fantastic thoughts by a yelling Twilight. "Your not even listening, how obnoxious are you?" she shouted. Sonorous was through listening, her eyes harden, straightening her posture before marching down the stairs.
"Listen up and listen well, I will not tolerate your squawking ," Sonorous growled. A hint of fear flashed in Twilight's eyes as the towering mare advanced on her. " Not every pony wants your friendship, nor requires it ," she bellowed. "I choose who I associate with and any pony that disagrees can buck off," continued Sonorous.
"Kno w that I don't have a problem with you or your friends," Sonorous lectured on, her volume decreasing. "However if I choose to engage you or your friends, it'll be on my on volition," her voice regaining a sense of normality. "Then why did you just teleport away like we weren't even there?" Twilight exclaimed.
Sonorous' eyes narrowed in disdain, staring Twilight down. A single yelp escaped Twilight's mouth, as a green blast struck her. In a flash of light, Twilight was huddled on the ground, shield up, in front of the Ponyville Library. Realizing that Sonorous had teleported her away, her shield faded away as she got to her hooves. Furious, she entered the library to try and calm herself down.
Sonorous, spent some time in her wagon, before stepped out and locking the door. She set out toward Sugarcube Corner to meet up with Octavia and Vinyl. As she trotted through the street, she could hear murmurs from ponies. Some murmurs were about the timber wolves that rampaged through town. While others were about the show that was put on in the theater.
A smirk graced her lips, it seemed that they were the talk of the town. Sonorous was slightly amused yet mostly disappointed at herself. She didn't want to cause a ruckus, it was suppose to be a quiet reconnaissance. Well despite what everything should have been, she was in the muck of it now, letting out a forced sigh.
Sonorous trotted into Sugarcube Corner and trotted up to the counter. Mrs. Cake had motioned her over and in a low whisper, advising her that another outbreak like last night and she would be banned. After agreeing not to make a scene, Mrs. Cake pointed to the corner booth where Octavia and Vinyl were waiting.
Sonorous turned and slowly trotted toward the corner, with a small scowl from the confrontation. She reached the booth and sat down in the empty booth across from Octavia and Vinyl. "I'm guessing that Mrs. Cake gave you the same lecture," Vinyl snickered. Sonorous shrugged in agreement then gave a huff in contempt.
Octavia spoke in a definite tone, "Well even if it was a misunderstanding, we did cause a scene." " P utting all that aside, I wanted to ask if you'd accompany me for an upcoming gig ," Vinyl exclaimed pointing a hoof at Sonorous. She raised an eyebrow wondering what Vinyl meant. Vinyl explained that after they left the theater.
A pony from Canterlot, who called himself Good Fortune, was waiting at their house. At this, Sonorous slightly smirked while asking, "both of you live together?" At this a blush rose on both of the ponies faces. Vinyl was the first to regain her composure. "I don't care if anypony knows that we're mare friends, if they have a problem they can go buck themselves," Vinyl declared.
With that said Vinyl nuzzled Octavia, who in turned nuzzled back. Once again the smell of love filled Sonorous' nostrils. Ignoring the sweet scent, she didn't want to be tempted to absorb any of their love. She knew that her meals had to be consumed with the utmost discretion. The two mares nuzzled a few more minutes before they broke apart.
Octavia finally composed herself before continuing the previous conversation. "Well back to the point, that pony offered Vinyl to DJ his upcoming party," she said. "Of course, I never turn down a chance to show my skills to anypony," Vinyl chuckled. Then Vinyl turned to look at Sonorous, "I thought that you would like to hear my type of music," she continued.
Sonorous smiled and accepted Vinyl's invitation, which caused both mares to smile brightly. Vinyl looked out the window at the night sky with a slight sigh. " W e need to get home since we head to Canterlot early the next day," she stated. The three mares got up from their seats and trotted out of Sugarcube Corner.
They bade farewell to each other before parting ways. Vinyl and Octavia to their home while Sonorous to her wagon. The walk through the night was quiet, most ponies were already home. Then unexpectedly Pinkie Pie's head popped out of a barrel, a huge smile adored her face. Sonorous tried to ignore her and continue on her way.
Pinkie Pie, not being discouraged, hopped out and followed her. The constant hoof clops could be heard with each hop from the pink pony. Sonorous rolled her eyes and stopped, Pinkie Pie stopped right next to her. "I saw that you, Octavia, and Vinyl were at Sug a r c ube Corner but didn't stay very long," Pinkie Pie stated.
"Well, we were just meeting up there," Sonorous blurted out. " Was it about the next show you and Octavia would perform?" Pinkie Pie quizzed. She denied the question, annoyance in her voice. Pinkie Pie continued to talk endlessly, mostly ramblings about nothing important.
The pink mare suddenly stopped, her eyes as wide as apples. "I just realized that I hadn't thrown you a welcome to Ponyville P arty," Pinkie Pie beamed at Sonorous. "That's quite alright, there's no need for that " Sonorous refused. "Don't be a silly filly, it's no problem," she insisted.
Sonorous was starting to lose her temper with the party pony. "Why don' t you just throw a party for the safety of Ponyville," she hissed. Pinkie Pie put a hoof to her chin and thought about the idea. While she was distracted, Sonorous took this opportunity to teleport away.
Pinkie Pie, noticing that she was alone now, just shrugged, and trotted back home. She didn't feel like hopping right now, her head hung low as she wondered why Sonorous acted so cold. Sonorous reappeared right outside her wagon, she quickly entered and locked the door. Before finally retiring to bed, she erected a form fitting barrier within the wagon. Just in case Pinkie Pie wanted to drop by unexpectantly.
There was a knock at the door, A drowsy Chrysalis rose from her bed. Rubbing her eyes, she donned her disguise, and removed the barrier before opening the door. Outside was two ponies, Sonorous' mood lightened when she saw Octavia and Vinyl. After locking up the wagon, the three mares trotted off toward the train in the early morning.
The train ride was uneventful, the car they were in was empty. Octavia snuggled up against Vinyl and was soon fast asleep. Vinyl looked at the clock at the end of the car. It was a five hour trip, a sigh issued from her muzzle. Suggesting that Sonorous get some sleep as well, before snuggling next to Octavia.
Sonorous glanced at the sleeping mares before her gaze turned to the passing scenery outside the window. She was use to early mornings, having to survive in the badlands called for nothing less. Hours past, the stewardess making her rounds was the only disturbance to the otherwise silence of the car.
The train continued toward Canterlot, picking up a few more early risers along the way. With Canterlot station finally coming into view, Sonorous gently prodded her sleeping companions. Vinyl and Octavia, both yawned, before looking out the window at the approaching station. They were confused at the appearance of a blanket that was draped over them.
Upon inquiring about it, Sonorous replied that the stewardess had placed it over them. The conductor came over the intercom, announcing that they were at Canterlot Station. A sleepy Vinyl and Octavia got up along with Sonorous to exit the train. The cool air gave the recently woken mares a slightly shiver, missing the warmth of the blanket.
The sun was making its way high into the sky. The three ponies stepped off the platform and made their way towards the City of Canterlot. After several hours of hiking up the cobblestone road, they stood at the gates of Canterlot. "That climb is always tiring," Vinyl sighed looking back down the long road. Stopping momentarily to catch their breath, they continued toward their destination.
As they trotted Sonorous probed Vinyl about what type of music she performed. After thinking a moment, Vinyl confessed that she never had to describe her music. Continuing, she mentioned that it was something she could feel but never able to put into words. A memory of when she was a filly without a cutie mark, came to mind. It was Manehattan where she first heard the music called dubstep.
Listening to its rhythmic beats and synthetic sounds, she couldn't help but dance. Only when the broadcast ended did she notice that her cutie mark had appeared upon her flank. A soft voice snapped Vinyl out of her reminiscing, Octavia was smiling. Vinyl smiled back and replied that she lacked the proper words for an adequate explanation.
The rest of the way Octavia teased Vinyl about daydreaming while she trotted. Curiosity stirred in Sonorous' mind now, what music had to be felt but had no description. They finally reached the building where Vinyl was to perform. The building they stood in front of was a tall warehouse painted in a bright red and the windowsills were a dark blue.
On the wall above the entrance was a sign that read, Canterlot Party Flat. Vinyl trotted up the stairs, she was soon followed by Octavia and Sonorous. Upon entering the building, their eyes were met by a room that looked twice as big as the building itself. Trotting to the stage in the back, they could see equipment being set up all around them.
Metal towers of lights were set up at both corners behind the stage. The lights were varied at different degrees to cover all the dance floor. Above them were rows and rows of stage lights ready to shine upon the floor below. On stage were a set of huge speakers on either side. In the center was a table with several pieces of equipment.
Rows and rows of speakers protruded from the side walls, all pointed to face the opposite wall. As they trotted up the stairs, Good Fortune stopped surveying the stage as he greeted them. He was a plain brown stallion, with a chocolate brown mane and tail, his cutie mark was the only thing that stood out.
Two koi fish swam in a circle, in between the fish was a single cherry blossom. Vinyl reached out a hoof to greet him, Good Fortune extended his hoof to shake hers. "As you can see we've almost got everything set up for the party," he announced. Vinyl nodded in approval, taking a quick glance around the room before returning her gaze to Good Fortune.
"Well I guess since we have a couple of hours, we'll head out to get some lunch," Octavia said as her stomach gave a slight grumble. Vinyl nodded in agreement, realizing that her excitement and adrenaline had eclipsed her hunger. Sonorous, who fed on love, didn't have any need of pony food remained quiet.
The three ponies turned and trotted away, leaving him to finish preparations. Once outside, Octavia galloped ahead and turned to face them. "Any idea on where you want to go?" she asked. Both mares shrugged, not really caring where they went. Octavia grinned, announcing that she knew of a place. She turning to trot off, followed by Sonorous and Vinyl.
Meanwhile back in Ponyville, Pinkie Pie's party had just began. Sugarcube Corner, the improvisational party place of Ponyville, was bustling with activity. Multicolored streamers hung from the walls, games like pin the tail on the princess, Twister, and charades littered the room. Pinkie Pie was in the kitchen, taking out a fresh batch of cup cakes from the oven.
Sitting the pan on the counter next to seven other trays of cupcakes. After putting a new batch of cupcakes in the oven, she turned to a huge array of varying colored icing bags. In her typical fashion, Pinkie Pie took four bags of frosting. Two in each hoof, one in her tail, and the last bag of icing in her mane.
In a blur of movement, streams of multicolored icing flew through the air with pin point accuracy. In no time flat, the cupcakes had either a single or a double layer of icing upon them. Every cupcake looked perfect, all the way to their swirled hats of frosting. Pinkie Pie came out of the kitchen balancing four trays full of cupcakes.
The crowd glanced at the pink mare as she trotted by balancing the four trays. Pinkie Pie some how defied logic at times and asking about it was pointless. The same was true in this case, Pinkie Pie balanced them on her head, tail, back, and one on her forehoof. She gently placed them on the tables that lined the wall.
After unloading her cargo, she returned to load up the remaining four trays. Though the balancing act seemed impossible, Pinkie Pie carried them with ease. Carefully trotting outside, she stared onward at all the happy ponies. The activities outside consisted of karaoke, tag, pie eating contests, and pinatas. The smiles that everypony wore made Pinkie Pie's heart flutter to no end.
Back in Canterlot, the sun was hidden by the many buildings. The Party Flat was bustling with Vinyl's music. It's windows reflected a massive wave of multiple colored lights. A line to gain entrance stretched down the street as anxious ponies held their tickets, ecstatic to gain entrance to the party. Inside was an explosion of rainbow colors emanating from several light sources, both behind and above the stage.
The dance floor was packed with ponies, all dancing their own brand of party moves. On stage was Vinyl, completely oblivious to everything except her music. She had a heavy baseline blaring through the speakers, accompanied by a distorted electronic guitar and snare drum. Vinyl wove her music together so perfectly that the individual instruments were indistinguishable.
The energy was intoxicating, even Octavia was spotted on the dance floor. Sonorous stayed at the bar that was stationed against the right wall of the room. Just enjoying the music, she resigned to reshuffle her grand scheme, this trip to Canterlot was unexpected but not unwelcome.
The opportunity to gather intelligence of the royal city was quite tempting, however she was snapped out of her thoughts by Octavia taking a seat beside her. Out of breath, She asked for a cider to quench her thirst. Quickly downing the cider, she turned to speak with Sonorous, "why aren't you dancing?" she yelled over the music. Sonorous cocked her head back slightly and shook her head. Octavia wasn't backing down, she latched onto Sonorous' forehoof and dragged her toward the dance floor.
Just because they seemed to be seeing things eye to eye, didn't mean anything. On one hoof she could dispose of them and vanish. On the other hoof she could just ride this crazy train all the way to the station. Either way, the odds were still stacked in her favor. Everything would be fine in the end, she thought as she drifted off to sleep.
The sun began to shine its rays over the horizon, beams of sunlight began to pouring in through the window. A square box of light settled on Octavia's face, slowly she scrunched her nose in distress. "Could somepony close the blinds," she whined into the air. Vinyl just groaned before pulling her pillow over her head.
Chrysalis, barely awake, gripped the blinds with her magic, and closed them. Octavia gave a soft thank you, followed by a muffled grunt from Vinyl. A soft groan was the only response the two sleeping mares heard, if they heard anything at all. The three ponies drifted back to sleep. The streets of Canterlot began to bustle with ponies.
A paperpony unicorn was trotting down the street, saddle bags full of papers. Levitating a paper, then tossing it onto the doorstep of the houses he past. Keeping a steady pace, he continued his route as he trotted along the side walk. Shops of every variation began to open up, ready for anypony to enter their establishment. Up in her tower, a snow white alicorn trotted out to enjoy the view of the castle grounds.
Celestia was one of the Princesses of Equestria. Her astral mane and tail was a stripped mixture of dark pink, dark blue, teal green, and turquoise. She wore a three pointed golden crown, the outer peaks were small while the middle peak was twice their length. In the center of the crown was a small diamond shaped amethyst.
Celestia wore a golden breast collar, the front portion had a slightly larger diamond shaped amethyst embedded in it. Adorning her hooves were a set of four golden hoof cuffs, a Fleur-De-Lis design sprouted up, hugging the front of her legs. Celestia's cutie mark was an eight pointed stylized sun. Her Alicorn horn was snow white and very long, signifying her long life.
Her wings were also white, large, and very elegant. Finally her eyes, which matched her jewels, were a deep amethyst. Looking toward a small table, her tea kettle was whistling, the water inside reaching its boiling point. Celestia turned on her hoof and strolled back into her study, where she often enjoyed morning tea
Laying the paper down that the guard had retrieved, she scanned the articles while she sipped her tea. This time was very precious to her, the only moments of peace she had before morning court. She knew that soon she'd be facing an onslaught of whinny, nobleponies who's interest stopped at their snobby muzzles.
Turning the pages with her magic, she quickly scanned the articles. She was about to turn the page when she noticed an article about a concert. The article revealed that it was being held in the Canterlot Party Flat Warehouse. Hosted by a stallion named Good Fortune and featured the talents of Octavia, Vinyl, and Sonorous.
A smile spread across her face, Celestia remembered when Octavia performed at The Grand Galloping Gala. After that, she had her hoofmaidens occasionally venture out to purchase Octavia's latest record. Celestia absolutely adored classical music and Octavia was a master of the art. Her mood greatly boosted, she folded the paper neatly, and finished her tea.
Trotting toward the throne room with a small hop in her step, despite the up coming squabblers. At the Canterlot Party Flat, Good Fortune had his hooves full with preparations. Good Fortune had employed several construction ponies as well as engineers to help in his endeavor. Looking around the building, he knew that a complete remodel was in order.
Back at the Gentle Hoof Inn, the three occupants finally began to stir awake. Chrysalis sat up and stretched her legs before getting out of bed. That was a very restful sleep, she thought yawning as she did so. Vinyl woke up next, rubbing her eyes, before putting her sunglasses on, then gave a small wave at Chrysalis.
Chrysalis, not knowing how to react, just got out of bed. Vinyl followed suit, trying to speak, instead raised a hoof to cover her yawn. Before anypony could speak, Octavia sat up in her bed." G ood morning," she quietly spoke before yawning. Octavia looked to Vinyl then glanced at Chrysalis. "What time is it ," she asked standing next to her bed.
Chrysalis stood dumbfounded, these two mares just learnt that she was a changeling queen yesterday. Yet they just woke up and acted as if nothing was wrong. "Wow we really slept in, the clock says i t's five in the afternoon," Vinyl replied with amusement in her voice. "It's not funny Vinyl, we nearly slept the entire day," Octavia scolded her.
Chrysalis still confused, trotted toward the two mares. " So that's it huh, I'm just another pony now ?" Chrysalis inquired with a hint of anxiety. Vinyl and Octavia, both turned to stare at her. "Should we treat you any different ?" Octavia remarked. "No, it's just weird not causing a panic when not in disguise ," Chrysalis blurted out.
"Well you haven't gave any reason why we should treat you any different," Vinyl interjected. "Even if it was a little rocky at first, you did what you did to survive," Octavia continued. Chrysalis, gave a small nod of acknowledgement, the other two mares began to talk amongst themselves.
She mentally chuckled, of all her schemes to infiltrate Equestria. All she had to do was act nice, well not nice, perhaps it was more aloof. Follow that up by showing off a talent or two and just like that, infiltration complete. As an added bonus, Chrysalis had even found willing food sources. She was snapped out of her thoughts when Octavia called to her.
"What do you think?" Octavia posing a question to her. "What were you two talking about again," Chrysalis asked, not following their conversation. Octavia, motioned a hoof toward Vinyl as she spoke, "We were discussing what to do before tomorrows performance . "
" W e were thinking that a spa day would help break the anxiety of tomorrow," Vinyl chimed. Chrysalis surveyed the two ponies, then nodded in agreement. She didn't feel any anxiety however if they felt tension, it might affect them if not alleviated. Drawing power within herself and a blink of an eye, Sonorous once again came into exsistance.
Vinyl and Octavia trotted over to the door, followed by Sonorous. After locking up, the three ponies trotted down the street. Making their way through the afternoon rush of ponies, they searched for a good place to eat. Coming to a quaint little diner, they entered and sat down at an empty booth. Looked through their menus, they surmised that the food must be good considering it was packed.
The waitress was trotting briskly just to attend to everypony. After a few minutes she approached them, pulling a notepad and pen, ready to jot down their order. Octavia ordered a cup of black coffee, over-easy eggs, and some hay bacon. Vinyl's order was a couple of haycakes with syrup, a side of hash-browns, and a cup of coffee with cream and sugar.
Sonorous just had black coffee. The waitress took down the request and trotted off to relay them to the cook. Looking around, Octavia noticed that both of her companions still looked drowsy. In fact she didn't fell completely awake herself, hopefully the coffee would perk them up.
Several more minutes passed before the waitress returned, carrying a trey of two plates and three cups of coffee. For an earth pony, she had remarkable endurance to balance a full tray with just the strength of her jaws. Sliding the tray onto the table in front of Octavia, Vinyl, and Sonorous. Before she left, the waitress gave a slight nod.
Their late breakfast was uneventful except for an earth stallion that occasionally waved to them from a counter stool. Ignoring the wobbling stallion, they continued their meals in peace. The two ponies having just finished their plates, sighed with delight. Noticing them, the waitress took their receipt, and approached them. Laying down the receipt, she asked if they enjoyed the food.
The waitress trotted away as Octavia finished off her coffee. Upon seeing the mares get out of their booth, the woozy stallion got up and stumbled toward them. "Hello there ladies, nice day isn't it," the stallion slurred, as he unconvincingly tried to act refined. Octavia reeled back in disgust, Vinyl just gave a facehoof, Sonorous glared at the stallion.
The acts of revulsion were lost upon the stallion as he continued to hit on the them. Sonorous, sensing that he was to inebriated to get the hint. Contempt was very prominent in her eyes as he continued to slur on. Sonorous strolled toward the stallion, her demeanor becoming ever more vicious.
Octavia and Vinyl's jaw dropped, Sonorous ignored them as she stopped inches away from his muzzle. Turning her attention toward them, she cooed gently, " Perhaps it would be best if you two waited outside ." Staring at the sinister smile on Sonorous' face, they quickly left, knowing that the impaired stallion was way over his head.
With them now gone, Sonorous turned her attention back to the stallion. In a sickly sweet voice she spoke to the stallion, " look at this mongrel trying to act suave ." The stallion continued to stare blankly, a goofy grin still plastered on his face.
She continued, her tone turning venomous, " They say every dog has its day, unfortunately today isn't yours fleabag . " His grin faded as he finally caught on to being insulted, anger flashed across his face. The inebriated stallion stumbled closer to Sonorous, muzzles nearly touching now.
The patrons of the restaurant were staring at the controversy now. He narrowed his blood shot eyes as he spoke a warning to Sonorous. " P erhaps you should let your breath deal the threats, considering it has more bravado then you," she sneered back, waving a hoof under her nose.
Every pony held their breath, waiting for what would happen next. Sonorous darted her eyes around the room but stopped as she spotted Octavia and Vinyl looking through the window. The stallion traced her gaze and grinned at the two ponies through the window. Growling, she raised a hoof to rest on the stallions cheek, and forced his head back around to stare at her.
" They are not your concern, your safety should be ," Sonorous snarled. The stallion brought his hoof up and slammed it squarely against Sonorous' cheek. A loud gasp could be heard from every pony in the diner. Silence filling the air, he placed his hoof back on the floor, and began to laugh.
Vinyl and Octavia both held their hooves over their mouths. However fear soon replaced concern as they caught a glimpse of Sonorous' eyes as they reopened. For a second they both could have sworn a deep green flash, flickered within them before dissipating. Everypony in the diner noticed that Sonorous' horn was blazing with magic.
Slowly turning her head back to stare at the stallion, his drunken laughter quickly vanished. An inky darkness rose from her horn blotting out every source of light as it saturated the diner. Soon the stallion and everything else was surrounded by darkness. Yet to his relief, the darkness vanished as soon as it had appeared.
He once again trained his eyes on Sonorous and gasped as visual flames of emerald magic flowed from her eyes and horn. A bleak feeling began to engulfed him, like being submerged into a frozen river. His breathing felt ragged as if breathing stagnate air. His terror intensified as she smiled, revealing two sharp fangs.
Did she always have fangs, he frantically wondered, looking around he noticed everypony was staring blankly at him. Glanced to the window he noticed the two mares outside were gone. Clanking noises caused him to turn his head back around. His color faded as he noticed everypony, except Sonorous, grabbing any utensil or dishware within reach.
Their eyes were glazed over with a white milky color, their face were expressionless. A demonic roar boomed throughout the room, causing every pony to leaped at the stallion. A chaotic chorus of smashing, slashing, and dull thuds as the entranced ponies attacked the stallion. The stallion, unable to do anything, stood there as the mob tore him apart.
Blood splattered the floor below him yet the stallion realized his body regenerated every wound and bruise. How was this possible he thought, pain searing all through his body. Sonorous strolled up to the stallion, the crowd parting for her to approach him. He stared into Sonorous' eyes which were now pulsating huge burst of magical energy.
His brain was screaming at him to fight back or run yet his body wouldn't respond. She stopping when their muzzles touched, her voice echoing in his mind. " I hope you are enjoying my gift ," Sonorous sickly declared."What have you done to me," he thought back. " This is the price you pay when you attack me ," Sonorous replied before issuing a blood curdling chortling.
He began to panic as he saw that her teeth were now honed to long sharp points. Although his body repaired the damage from the mob, his mind was now writhing in pain. "Ah poor pony, don't you like your mental torment ?" Sonorous' mocking voice echoed in his head. "Mental torment," the stallion replied, his body shook wildly from being assaulted.
"That's right, what better punishment then within your mind," she sneered. "There is no escape for you, no chance of reprieve, JUST. PURE. UNADULTERATED. SUFFERING!" Sonorous yelled with a Royal Canterlonian tone. The stallion was unable to reply, so Sonorous continued to reprimand him in a condescending tone.
As hard as he tried, he could feel his mind slowly began to break and crumble from the pain. "As much as I enjoy your squirming, its time to say ad ieu." " D on't fret though your punishment won't fade when I do ! " Sonorous jested in a sing song fading voice.
Sonorous vanished from the stallion's view, replaced by the entranced ponies who continued their assault. Vinyl and Octavia, confusion on their face, noticed that Sonorous' dilated eyes had returned to normal. Blinking repeatedly, she looked down at the now unconscious stallion on the floor. Horn still aglow, Sonorous opened his saddle bags and withdrew enough bits for their bill.
A smile spread across her face as the stallion twitched, still suffering from his personal prison. Placing the bits on the table, she trotted out of the diner. Expressions from the silent crowd ranged from confusion to shocked. Someponies thought that Sonorous had stolen from the stallion, while others thought it was a pale compensation for him striking her.
A large majority of ponies just wanted the mare to leave. As soon as the door closed, several ponies rushed over to see if the stallion was ok. The waitress let out a huge sigh, her coat still crawling from seeing those blank, menacing eyes. Sonorous stopped outside as Octavia and Vinyl bombarded her with questions about what just happened.
"What did you do to him, did he just pass out?" Octavia asked. Sonorous knew they would be curious, especially as they watched through the window. "Well the spell I conjured was his price for his insolence ," Sonorous replied. "What spell, all we saw was you staring at each other, did he die afterwards ?" Vinyl asked, noticing that the second part of Octavia's question went unanswered.
Sonorous answered in a whisper, "he's still alive, I try to avoid needless deaths if possible." Octavia and Vinyl both gave each other a curious glance, what did she mean by needless deaths. "So what exactly did you do to him ?" Octavia inquired. Sonorous narrowed her eyes, speaking in a definitive tone, "he deserved what happened but perhaps somethings should be left unsaid."
Quickly changing the subject she added, "so where were we going afterwards ?" "Well before all that, we were heading toward the spa ," Octavia replied with a hint of curiosity still in her voice. Sonorous gave a slight smile, which seemed to deter additional questions.
" Well lets get going then," Vinyl blurted out impatiently. Octavia gave a half grin as she trotted down the street. Vinyl and Sonorous soon followed her, the group was glad to put some distance between them and what just happened. Back at the diner, the waitress noticed the strong smell of cider from the unconscious stallion. Bringing her head back upright she called out to the cook.
We have a drunkard here, somepony fetch the guards to escort him out. Despite this incident, the whole of Canterlot would remain oblivious of what transpired. The moods of Octavia, Vinyl, and Sonorous seem to improve as they trotted through the bustling city of color and liveliness. After a couple hours of sightseeing, the group finally arrived at the spa.
Octavia, reaching the door first, opened it, and held it for Vinyl and Sonorous. The two mares filed through the door, followed by Octavia. The receptionist, not looking up from her desk spoke, "welcome to T he R egale Revive, where we'll rejuvenate your youth." "Hello, do you have an opening for three?" Octavia called out as the group approached the desk.
"Just sign your name here and..." the receptionist cut off as she looked up to see Octavia then to Vinyl. Sonorous rolled her eyes as the receptionist degenerated into a drooling fanpony. Knowing what would soon follow, she trotted over to a chair and sat down. Octavia signed their names and after a short while, wrote down a type of spa treatment.
Placing the clipboard back on the desk, Octavia hurrying away from the ruckus the receptionist was now making. She took a chair next to Sonorous, soon they groaning in annoyance. The receptionist rushed out from behind her desk to stand uncomfortably close to Vinyl. She was stuttering like a confessing filly on Hearts and Hooves Day.
Vinyl tried not to be rude but her patience was running thin for the swooning mare. "Look I know your excited to meet me but back off," she scolded. The receptionist drooped her head, a hurt expression appeared on her face. Vinyl gave a sigh as she looked at the whimpering mare. "Ugh, look I didn't mean to scold you but I prefer my personal space," Vinyl stated.
The receptionist gave a weak smile as she apologized. Giving a warm smile, Vinyl waved a dismissive hoof. Afterwards she trotted toward the chairs, likewise the receptionist returned behind her desk. Sorting her papers, the receptionist soon pushed a button and spoke into a microphone. Her voice echoed from the intercom, requesting masseuses for a session of three.
The three ponies waited in their chairs while the receptionist resumed her duties. After a few minutes, a pony stuck her head out the door and spoke to the receptionist. "O c tavia, Sonorous, and Vinyl, please follow me to the back , " the pony with her head poking out called.
The three mares got up and followed through the open door. "So what did you sign us up for," Sonorous asked Octavia. "I signed us up for the works which included a hot j acuzzi, face mask, m a ssage, then a hooficure," Octavia replied.
Sonorous had only vague guesses of the activities that was mentioned. Having no prior experience of a spa however if a jacuzzi was anything like a hot springs, this might not be so bad she thought. The pony stopped and turned to face them, holding a door open. " The jacuzzi is here, while you relax , the rest of your treatment will be prepared" she said before trotting off.
They trotted into the small room, lockers lined both sides of the wall. In the center of the room was an in-ground jacuzzi, that was big enough to fit about six ponies. Several rows of small cubby holed shelving, circled a few inches from the tub. The tiles of the room was a sea-green sorta color, it was a nice match to the blue lockers.
Sonorous locking the door, not wanting to be disturbed. Octavia took off her collar, placing it on the top shelf and took a towel from the bottom shelf. The other two followed suit, placing their belongings within their selected lockers and withdrawing a towel. Vinyl joined Octavia at the edge of the tub. Several button presses later, the tub roared to life, the water slowly swirled.
Massive amounts of bubbles rose from its jets, a low hum reverberated around the room. Octavia and Vinyl placed their towels in the small shelves. Slowly backing into the jacuzzi, careful to step on the protruding circular step within the tub. After their hooves touched the bottom, they turned and used the step as a bench.
" This is so wonder ful," Vinyl yelled, her voice echoing off the walls. "Is yelling really necessary," Octavia playfully scolded, "Although you're right, this is quite marvelous ." Sonorous joined them in the tub, putting her forearms atop the edge of the tub. Applying pressure through her forelegs, Sonorous began to float slightly due to the pressure of the jets.
Vinyl, her magenta eyes now exposed, looked to Octavia, who had a blissful smile and her eyes closed. "Hey Octavia, will the rest of our visit be this good?" Vinyl asked. Not opening her eyes, she shrugged her shoulders and stated that she'd never been to a spa.
What felt like mere seconds past when a knock was heard from the door. "Excus e me, it's almost time for your next treatment," A pony called from outside the door. The three mares groaned in disagreement, there was no way an hour had already passed. Begrudgingly they got out, and began to dry themselves.
Vinyl was proclaiming her anger loudly, while she dried off. She was still complaining under her breath as she unlocked the door. They trotted outside with their towels wrapped around their barrels. The spa pony gave a slight nod before trotting a few feet before stopping. In this room you'll receive your face mask and hooficure, they stated before trotting off.
Three spa mares stood next to three chairs, in the seats were three light blue fluffy spa coats. Discarding their towels in the hamper, they trotted over and donned the coats. They took a seat, while the employees gathered the materials to apply the face masks. As the mask was being applied to her face, Sonorous felt her face tingle ever so slightly, it was a unique sensation.
Her face felt like it was being pulled in a dozen different directions. After the masks were applied, the masseuses open some drawers and extracted the files out for their hooficure. Vinyl jerked her forehoof out of the masseuse's grip. The file grating against her hoof was very unusual. Pulling her hoof away, the mare patiently waiting until she was allowed to continue.
Vinyl, her face heating up in embarrassment, slowly extended her hoof. As the grating began again, she took a deep breath to calm down. Octavia was simply enjoying the gentle strokes of the file across her hooves. Opening an eye, she glance at the clock on the wall. It was seven in the afternoon now, with a slight hum she laid her head back against the chair.
The masseuses chatted amongst themselves as they worked. The three companions just relaxed in their seats, listening to their conversation. Just like the jacuzzi, time seemed to fly by, soon the spa ponies were washing their masks off. After drying the water from their faces, they were ushered back into the hall. The same pony that guided them to their previous designations, waited for them.
"If you'll follow me to the next room please," the pony spoke. The four ponies trotted back toward the rear of the building, stopping a couple of doors short from the jacuzzi room. Just like the last couple of times, the guiding pony directed them inside. Nodding as they passed, inside the room were several flat tables. The tables lined both walls and had a sheet over top their cushions.
Masseuses stood by, waiting for the mares to lay down. Removing their robes, they climbed upon the tables and laid on their stomachs. Octavia and Vinyl chose tables on the right side of the room. Sonorous, chose a table directly across from them. When asked why, Sonorous replied that a conversation could be held without having to turn their heads.
Each spa pony stood beside an occupied table, gingerly placing their hooves on their back and gently began to pommel them. Quickly adopting a fast rhythmic pace, a united sigh of comfort filled the room. Octavia, Vinyl, and Sonorous, despite not being tired, fought to keep their eyes open. "This is quite relaxing," Sonorous softly spoke, relishing the message.
"We definitely needed this, I feel awesome ! " Vinyl calling out. "Really Vinyl, you should try a more su b tle voice, you'll appear less rambunctious," Octavia deadpanned. Vinyl gave a muffled laugh before replying blissfully, "What can I say, I live loud ! "
Both Octavia and Vinyl laughed, while Sonorous opted to just enjoying the message. They continued to converse with each other, with the occasional inclusion of Sonorous. Meanwhile Canterlot was treated to the gentle night air wafted through the streets. A crescent moon and stars bathed the city in a silver glow.
Celestia was in her quarters, resting under her covers. Her soft bed cradled her slumbering form, when a knock from her door snapped her awake. Throwing the covers off with her magic, she drowsily bid them entrance. The doors slowly opened and a deep yet gentle voice rung out, " Our apol o gies sister, we know it's late but a problem forces us to seek your aid ," Luna stated.
Luna was the younger alicorn princess of Equestria, sister to Celestia. She casually strolled into Celestia's room, closing the door behind her. Her royal attire was constructed smaller as to not hinder the younger princess. Luna's coat was a dark blue, her mane and tail was an astral sapphire blue with a transparent blue-violet aura surrounding it. Rumor was that her mane and tail, depicted every star within the night sky.
Wearing a crown similar to Celestia, the center spire slightly rose above the outer two. However Luna's crown was an inky black as well as her breast collar which depicted a white crescent moon. Upon her flank depicted a black splotch along with a white crescent moon. Her horn was dark blue, she wore light purple hoof cuffs. Her hoof cuffs had the upper portion of a Fleur-De-Lis design extending up her legs.
Luna's wings were dark blue, with eyes of shaded green teal. Celestia rose from her bed and stepped into her hoof cuffs, that were kicked off hours before. Using her magic, she retrieved her breast collar off its stand. A loud snap was heard, as the collar clamped together around her neck. Yawning, she reached for her crown on the night stand.
"Sister, w hat has happened ," Celestia inquired, strolling up to stand next to her. Luna looked at Celestia before making her unusual report. Beginning at the point when she entered the dream world, where her ears was immediately assaulted by horrific wailing. Running down the Lunar pathway, she soon stopped in front of a door labeled Brier Patch.
Upon entering, Lunar gasped as a horrid sight greeted her eyes. A dozen ponies appeared to be overwhelming a single earth stallion. Upon materializing within his subconscious, Luna quickly dispelled the disturbing scene. All the assailing ponies vanished, leaving a floor splattered with blood along with broken dishes and discarded silverware, also caked in blood.
In the center of all the destruction laid a terrified stallion, curled into a ball. Luna trotted cautiously toward the stallion, stopping when he began to stumble to his hooves. "Is it over, are you here to save me ? " he shuddered in fright. Luna nodded, he briefly smiled before fear reappeared on his face. "NO, N O , this can't be right, you're not real, just an illusion !" the stallion frantically yelled.
Luna stood stunned while the stallion stumbled away, blood spurting out of him. "Calm down, we are here to help you," conveyed Luna in a caring voice. To no avail, the stallion continued to push himself against the wall, desperate to escape. Losing her patience, she utilized her Canterlonian Voice, "Cease your panic, your princess demands it !"
This seemed to snap the hysteric stallion into a shaky semblance of sanity. He gazed at the night princess, "It truly is you, isn't it?" "I ca n't..tell...., HELP..ME ! " He called out as his pupils dilated to pin points. "NO! DON'T HURT ME ANYMORE, GO AWAY!" the stallion shouted as insanity consumed him again.
Dropped her head in despair, she faded from his mind. She finished her report in a sad tone. By now Celestia was fully awake, listening intently to her younger sister's report. "I thought that maybe you would be more effective since he thought I was an illusion ," Luna stated. "Besides out here maybe we could succeed where I could not ,"she added.
Celestia draped her wing over her sister's barrel and assured her that she tried her best. Telling her that within the dream realm, her magic alone functioned. Luna leaned against Celestia, welcoming her comforting warmth. After a couple of minutes, Celestia removed her wing and gave her sister a determined look. Nodded in agreement, they made their way to the holding cells.
Their quick pace brought them to a pair of guards. Behind them was a couple of tall doors, leading to the holding cells. The guards bowed as they approached, " w e ' re here to see Brier P atch," Celestia declared. The two guards opened the doors before stepping aside, bidding the alicorns entrance.
"Down the hall, forth cell on the right," a guard spoke as they passed by. The sisters trotted down the deserted block, their hoof clops echoed loudly with each step. Finally, they reached Brier Patch's cell, they stopped to stare inside. In the corner of the cell laid a motionless stallion on the stone floor. Celestia cleared her throat, trying to get the stallion's attention.
At first he didn't stir, unsure that he had noticed, she cleared her throat again slightly louder then before. Slowly the stallion began to rise to his hooves, his legs shook uncontrollable as he did so. "Wh...what do you ne...need," the stallion's terrified voice squeaked out. In a gentle voice Celestia called out, "I would like to speak with you."
The stallion's ears flicked up then quickly back down before whispering, "forg....forgive me for n.no...not facing your ma..jest..ty." "That's fine, from what I hear you've had quite the ordeal," Celestia replied. The stallion was silent, his body constantly swayed, as he tried to remain standing. She chose her words carefully, not wanting to upset him.
"Could you please tell us what has happened to you?" Upon hearing this, he collapsed to the floor, hooves firmly on his head. His body shook like leaves in a storm, whimpering at the memory of his personal hell. Again, in a softer voice, Celestia repeated her request. Informing him that they had to know what happened in order to start helping him.
Sobs could now be heard from within the cell, Celestia was unsure of how to proceed. Luna, more experienced with sobbing fillies, uncomfortable traced a circle on the floor. " I know that yo..." she was interrupted as the stallion leaped back to his hooves, he turned violently to face the royal sisters.
Celestia slightly reeled back, not use to seeing such definitive hatred aimed at her. Seeing his tormented face, Luna drooped her head and wings in despair. Anger and malice radiated from him, unable to comprehend why anypony would want him to relive that horror again. Through manic fits, the stallion shouted and ranted the incident that drove him mad.
Hours passed, his tale extended by his stuttering and numerous sobs. Celestia, despite herself, felt her hoof tap impatiently on the stone floor. With a deep breath and a sideways glance from Luna, she doubled her efforts to remain calm. After what seemed an eternity, he stopped, his story not even half told. In a fit that caused him to stumble wildly, he began to run around in circles.
Both Celestia and Luna looked dumbstruck, the frantic stallion ran and shouted. Unable to revive his sanity, the princesses regretfully turned to leave. Luna gave the crazed pony a last empathetic look, before trotting after her. The cell block now echoed with shouts and hoof falls, its sole occupant lost to insanity. Once the doors were closed, Celestia turned to Luna.
Having an idea on what Celestia wanted, she stated that she'd continue the investigation. "V ery well Luna, I wish you luck in your endeavor," Celestia spoke as magic weaved up her horn. The guards gave a salute, knowing that the princesses were about to teleport. In a flash, they vanished from the dungeon, to reappear in Celestia's quarters.
Once in the privacy of her room, Celestia give Luna an encouraging nuzzle before trotting to her bed. "Good night sister, we wish you pleasant dreams," Luna called after Celestia. The older sister stopped yet didn't turn around, "be careful, his mental state is very fragile ," she spoke lightly.
"We will dear sister," Luna assured her before exiting. As soon as the doors closed, Celestia felt a tear streak down her cheek. Who would impose such a twisted fate upon another, she thought. The sky was bright and clear, the clock in the center of Canterlot revealed that it was nine in the morning. Back in Ponyville, there was a great hustle, several groups of ponies swarmed the station.
Twilight and her friends were among the group, everypony wanted to attend Canterlot's concert. As the train pulled into the station, the crowd moaned upon seeing that a couple of passenger cars were already packed to capacity. The crowd slowly filed into the empty cars, ponies were sitting in the aisles when the benches were gone.
Glancing at the packed platform, the conductor stepped out of the train engine. Making his way to a small building just left of the platform. He trotted into the building and up to the counter where a single pony stood. To the left of the pony sat a small machine known as a telegraph. The conductor cleared his throat to get the telegrapher's attention.
Only when the pony raised his head, did he continue. I need to send some telegrams, several minutes later, he returned to his engine. As soon as the last pony boarded, the passenger car closed its doors as the train continued its trek. The head stewardess, after a quick chat with the conductor, strolled through the cars. Taking a quick glance of the remaining capacity of the passenger cars.
The train chugged along its way as several uneventful hours passed. The clanking of the train wheels against the rails was pounding out a steady rhythm. The door to the conductor's cabin opened, revealing the stewardess. She quickly entered the car, closing the door behind her. "I would guess that a second train will be needed ," she spoke in a sweet voice.
With a nod from the conductor, the stewardess left to attend to the passengers. An amused chuckle escaped his lips, a second train hasn't been called for in a very long time. Back in Canterlot, It was business as usual, the incident from yesterday completely forgotten. However unlike yesterday, the streets seem to be over saturated with ponies.
The air felt electric, the influx of ponies as well as natives were excited for the night's concert. Even Celestia felt a slight giddiness as she sipped her tea. Day court was suspended for the day, quite tired of hearing squawking nobles. The sun's position in the sky, told her that it was half past one in the afternoon. Celestia thought about Luna's determination, despite her burning the midnight oil.
As if on cue, a very distraught Luna entered her private studies. Every resource available to her was spent, yet a solution continued to evade her. She trudged slowly across the room, toward Celestia. Her head dropped low, mane covering her eyes. Still staring at the floor, Luna weakly stated that her mental probing of Brier's mind was unsuccessful.
Celestia replaced her cup back upon its saucer and approached. Luna's ears twitched at the sound of hoof falls, they echoed through the room of eerie silence. Her inability to progress the investigation, demolished her confidence. She desperately wished that Celestia would say something, anything to break the uneasy tension.
She was charged to shed light upon this mystery and dig up any clues. Instead all she had accomplished was the acquisition of dark bags under her eyes. Luna began to shake in frustration and self pity, upon seeing this, Celestia leaped to her sister's side. Engulfing her in a blanket of white feathers, she pulled Luna into a hug. A gasp issued from the night princess, the warm loving embrace befuddled her.
" M y dearest sister, your best is all I could ask for," cooed Celestia as she tightened her embrace. A tear had escaped during the trepid silence however after hearing those words she broke down. Burying her face into Celestia shoulder, her muffled sobs filled the chamber. The two alicorns stood motionless, wrapped within sisterly love.
After several long minutes, Luna finally lifted her head and found herself staring into Celestia's loving eyes, coherent thoughts beginning to reemerge. How could her sister be so forgiving, she had failed, she thought. She was a Princess of Equestria, the right hoof of Princess Celestia, above all her sister.
Luna's thoughts were interrupted by Celestia's soothing voice, "I know that you stride for perfection, while any short comings you consider a failure." " We muddl e through our days , pitfalls littering our path . " "Failure isn't when you fall short, it's when you give up on success. " Celestia conveyed to Luna.
Her tears began to slow, as she lifted a hoof to wipe her eyes. Luna's once regretful expression morphed into a warm smile. The two sisters retired to the pillows that circled the small table in Celestia's study. Luna felt her spirit brighten after a pleasant chat and a cup of tea. With a yawn she tried to rise however her tired muscles refused.
Tension and internal unrest had nullified any weariness from her mind but now they relentlessly assulted her. Catching sight of this, Celestia trotted over to assist. A dark blue wing quickly enveloped Celestia's barrel for support. With a quick teleport, both princesses were in Luna's sleeping quarters. Moments later, Luna was asleep, snuggled under her covers.
" Sleep well sister ," Celestia whispered before exiting the room. She strolled toward the royal library, the case of Brier Patch, still nagging at her. Stopping momentarily to inform a guard that she would like some refreshments. Her cheery mood slightly waned, despite all efforts to the contrary. It seemed that relaxation would evade her once again, as she strolled into the library.
Summoning her magic, she selected several books from the towering shelves. The books slid from their respective place and glided through the air to lay upon a table. A hoofmaiden unicorn entered the library with a platter of tea, cookies, and several slices of cake within her magical grip.
Celestia gave her thanks and motioned toward the table she'd be at. After placing the platter upon the table, the hoofmaiden gave a slight bow, then took her leave. Taking a sip of tea, Celestia opened the closest book, finding any type of solution was gonna be a long trial. At the Canterlot train station, the train pulled into the station.
It's doors opened to allow its numerous passengers to step onto the platform. The post mounted clocks revealed that it was ten past two in the afternoon. The huge crowd almost rivaled the participance of Princess Mi Amore Cadenza and Captain Shining Armor's wedding.
Among the crowd was Twilight and her friends, slowly making their way towards the Gentle Hoof Inn. "I'm so glad that we were able to reserve some rooms for us," Twilight mused. "After hearing a portion of that concert three days ago, I wouldn't be surprised if all of Ponyville isn't here," Rainbow dash chimed.
"Indeed, their music... was .... SUB LIME , " Rarity swooned. The six companions shook their heads at Rarity's overreaction. The six ponies and baby dragon, strolled through the streets of Canterlot. Marveling at the dramatically increase of Canterlot's populace. After an hour of trotting, the group finally reached their destination.
After visiting the front desk, they headed off to their rooms. Lingering only long enough to drop off their bags. With the concert starting later that night, Rarity's suggestion of sightseeing was a welcomed distraction. Flagging down a couple of carriages, Twilight and her friends made their way to the shopping district of Canterlot.
After a quick stop at a restaurant, they entered the first shop, kicking off their browsing spree. After several hours of visiting shops, they were surprised to spot a trio of familiar mares within an antique shop. The cashier welcoming the group as they entered the shop. Looking through a case of 35MM records was Vinyl.
Octavia was spotted looking at some antique instruments. Off in the back of the store, Sonorous could be seen trotting aimlessly. Octavia was the first to spot the group, she trotted over to greet them. Vinyl soon spotted Octavia and the group of seven. After paying for the records, she trotted over to greet them.
Sonorous, who was wondering around, was the last to spot her two companions. An inward wave of animosity rose within her at the sight of Twilight and company. With a deep sigh and a stoic face, she marched over to join them. Everypony, except Twilight and Spike, wore varied expressions upon seeing her.
Twilight, after venting her frustrations, was merely annoyed. Spike just glared at the pony who had belittled his friend. Sonorous didn't even glace at them, she trotted up to stand silently beside Vinyl. Hoping that this minor nuisance wouldn't drag on to long. Fluttershy, noticing that she looked uncomfortable, trotted up and began to speak.
"Um, hello again Miss. Sonorous, how are you today," Fluttershy quietly spoke. Sonorous focused her gaze upon Fluttershy before replying in a flat tone, "I'm doing fine, thank you." Fluttershy felt a wave of anxiety, begging her to retreat from this intimidating mare. Fighting those innate urges, she took a deep breath, held it, then let it out seconds later.
Feeling more at ease she spoke again,"Are you excited about playing tonight ?" Again Sonorous spoke in a monotone. "I'm very excited, its not everyday that a pony debuts in Canterlot." From her peripheral sight, Twilight spotted Fluttershy and Sonorous talking. She could feel a mixture of frustration and anger washing over her.
Remembering those cold words, Twilight wonder why she was so opposed to her. Clearly she didn't mind talking to her friends, Twilight's ears drooped slightly. After several minutes, the two groups parted ways. As soon as the three ponies left, Twilight turned to Fluttershy. "So what do you think of her ?" she asked.
" Well she is definitely a pony of few words," Fluttershy spoke. Her smile immediately vanished when met with the surprised looks of her friends. "Darling, I'm impressed that you decided to converse with such a brute . " Rarity said. "What do you mean, she wasn't rude at all, " Fluttershy replied, shocked at Rarity's words.
"Don't you remember how she insulted Twilight," Rainbow Dash blurted. "I hadn't forgotte n but Twilight did p u rsued her . " " If a stranger pursued you , wouldn't you get hostile?" Fluttershy squeaked, her voice straining under their stares.
Upon hearing this, the group considered her words, until Applejack broke the silence. "You're right sugarcube, maybe Sonorous isn't as ornery as we thought ." Fluttershy's smile returned, "However that doesn't excuse her behavior though," she added. The group continued to browse, their opinion of Sonorous slightly altered.
Meanwhile Octavia, Vinyl, and Sonorous trotted down the street, wondering where to go next. Vinyl was humming and leading the way, Octavia was beside Sonorous, a smile on her face. " I was surprised, Fluttershy is usually to shy to engage a strange pony," she declared. Sonorous turned her head toward Octavia as she continued.
"If I may ask, what did you all talk about ? " "Nothing really, just idle c hitchat ," Sonorous replied. " I t's good to see her shedding her shyness, even if only a little ," Octavia vocalized. The two hadn't noticed Vinyl's sudden stop slammed right into her. "Why did you stop Vinyl," Octavia stuttered as she caught herself from falling.
Sonorous wasn't so lucky though, stumbling mid-step, she fell to her knees. "Is that clock correct," Vinyl asked pointing to the clock in the store window. The clock shown a quarter til eight, both Octavia and Vinyl's eyes widened in surprise. "We need to hurry so we can tune our instruments before the show," Octavia spoke in a panicked tone.
They hurried off but stopped as they noticed Sonorous stationary. Vinyl dashed to Sonorous in a flash, urging her that they had to go. Sonorous shaking her head was the only response she received. Octavia rushed over to see why they were standing around. Sonorous just gave a snicker before she explained that there was a faster way.
Puzzled expressions were exchanged as Sonorous' horn glowed brightly. In a flash, a pair of wings appeared upon her back. Only her companions caught on to her ruse. Passing ponies just gawked, having just witnessed a unicorn transform into an alicorn. "Show pony," Vinyl playfully sneered. Sonorous just grinned before turning toward them.
"I hope you don't have a fear of heights," she smirked as telekinesis encased them both. Their amusement quickly turned to shock as they floated upward. Vinyl quickly recover and mimicked poses that would be found in a Superstallion Comic. However Octavia didn't adjust so well, she covered her eyes with her hooves.
Spreading her wings out, the three ponies took to the skies with a great gust. Vinyl stopped posing and resigned to hooted with delight as they flew. She yelled for Octavia to open her eyes, there was no response. With a sly grin, Vinyl called again, "Come on T avi , your missing out on something awesome ! "
Vinyl knew that she hated that name and sure enough, she opened her eyes and began to chastise her. "How many times do I have to tell yo..." Octavia trailed off when she realized where she was. Unlike last time though she couldn't cover her eyes. Her muscles seized up as she stared past Vinyl toward the ground.
Sonorous swiveled her head toward Octavia, upon feeling a sharp tug ripple through her telekinesis. Octavia was still held firmly, she'd merely jerked her body around to stared skyward. Both Sonorous and Vinyl could see Octavia slowly relax. " It's not so bad o nce you stop thinking about falling, " Octavia yelled, fear still present in her voice.
After a couple minutes of flight, The three mares began their descent upon the sidewalk below. Ponies on the street just gawked, the appearance of a strange alicorn descending from the sky was quite a sight. The Party Warehouse was directly behind Sonorous as she landed. Next to touch down was Vinyl, Octavia was still gazing up into the sky.
When Vinyl's rear hooves touched the ground, she bend down to rest on her haunches. With her forearms held out, she gestured toward Octavia. Mischief shone brightly in Vinyl's eyes, Sonorous nodded as she lowered the mare gracefully into Vinyl's forearms. Octavia shifted her eyes from the clouds to Vinyl when her face came into view.
Immediately her face turned beet red as she felt Vinyl's forearms cradle her backside. " Look, I caught an angel ," Vinyl softly spoke. Sonorous snickered as she watched a completely stupor Octavia struggle to speak. Quickly rolling out from Vinyl's arms, she dusted herself off, grinning as she did so. Leaning closer to Vinyl, Octavia quietly stammered.
"Honestly I swear you act more foalish then a filly at times . " A few ahhs and giggles could be heard from the crowd. Sonorous and Vinyl turned toward them, while Octavia avoided making eye contact. The gaze of an alicorn, even a strange one, was enough to cause them to bow out of respect. Sonorous gave a sharp snort, magic snaked up her horn.
With a bright flash, her wings vanished. The crowd, heads still lowered, only rose when three sets of hoof falls was heard. Murmurs from the crowd filled the air, as they asked who and where the mysterious alicorn came from? The three companions trotted into the warehouse, more pressing matters demanded their attention.
Once they entered the building they froze as a white stone wall stood in front of them. What purpose this other wall served was soon discovered as huge ramps spiraled up each side of the wall. Each ramp had safety rails and several metal poles leading from the ceiling to the floor. The ramps snaked around in a circular pattern as they ascended toward the ceiling.
The spiraling staircases intersected several stone slabs jetted out of the wall. These slaps granting access to newly constructed doorways. The safety rails that lined the stairs, diverted to include the stone protrusion into its safe enclosure. The floor was covered with a beautiful midnight blue rug. While several strips of amethyst purple carpet guided the patrons.
The purple carpet led to a ticket booth, tracing the sides of the booth to the doors on either side. It continued up the ramps, cushioning the hard stone surface. On the far right of the ceiling depicted the first rays of the dawn racing toward the center. On the left displayed the constellations, shining bright in the night sky.
While the middle was the collision of night and day, illustrated as vibrant streams of violet, orange, and yellowish red. The trio slowly trotted toward the inner doors, wondering what else would be different. Upon passing through, they noticed that the rear stage was completely removed. A circular stage now resided in the center of the room.
This stage rose four feet above the floor, ascending as a circular stairway. In the center of the stage was a hexagon column that extended all the way to the ceiling. There upon the stage, was all their instruments and equipment positioned in a triangular pattern. Vinyl's section was fairly cluttered since she required multiple pieces of equipment.
A closer inspection revealed that every cord from her equipment ran into the floor. Good Fortune certainly had a unique taste in design. This became very apparent once standing on stage. A glance around the room revealed tall structures that held close to the walls. This structure stretched eight feet up the walls however the corners were host to another structure.
These corner constructs was rounded, similar to that of a gazebo. Rising all the way to the ceiling, several balconies extended outward. A fixed interval between each of them as they ascended up the cylindrical towers. Vinyl flipped on her equipment which gave a small hum of life.
She turned to Octavia and Sonorous and spoke loudly with glee, " L et's get this party started!" Octavia cocked an eyebrow as she reminded her that the show hasn't started yet. " J ust getting hyped up," Vinyl replied with an over abundance of vigor.
Octavia smiled as she returned to tuning of her instrument, Sonorous doing likewise for her violin. Nine o' clock quickly arrived, ponies swarmed the lobby, eager to claim their seat. After purchasing a ticket, the guests either entered through the ground entrance or trotted to their designated balcony. The structures that clung to the wall was now revealed as huge retracting benches.
These benches had areas that resembled a flat trotway, providing access to the bench seats. Above them, hung a red velvet curtain that seemed to encircle the entire stage. A circular golden post held the curtain in the air. Several thick cables, could be seen rising from the orbicular metal ring to the ceiling above. Smaller cables could be seen tracing down the curtain, Sonorous guessed that was how they raised and lowered it.
Octavia was taking a few deep breaths to help focus herself. Vinyl was slightly bobbing her head, mane gentle rocking back and forth. Sonorous guessed that this was their preparation ritual before a performance. Sonorous kept a placid look yet was ecstatic for the prospective banquet. Deeper in her mind however a slight twinge of apprehension.
The same uneasiness that always accompanied huge crowds. A changeling's life depended on how well it could remain undetected. Smaller groups tended to be a safer mark, especially when hunting solo. However she never liked to play it safe, big risk for big rewards was more her style. Before she could continue her train of thought, all but the stage lights dimmed out.
The audience grew deathly quiet, waiting for the show to begin. The three ponies stood at their respective point of the triangle, facing the crowd. After a few moments, the lights over the stage dimmed to an orange grow. Vinyl began with a deep sound of a synthesized grand piano. Its tone began to fill the room with a nimble, cheery tone.
Despite not having any experience, except the previous day, with the classical genre, Vinyl had quickly grasped the concept of its musical structure. With a swift hoof of pressed buttons, turned knobs, and slide adjustments. The results was a beautiful fluttering scale of notes, from treble to bass. Octavia and Sonorous raised their instruments in preparation to join Vinyl.
Octavia's cello bellowed out a deep soothing melody. While Sonorous' violin rang out in a high pitched, moderately paced rhythm. The three separate musical numbers levitated from their respective sources. A placid aura began to saturated the atmosphere as the consonance of melodies wove themselves together. The resulting musical collaboration produced a harmonizing sound that could lull a dragon to complacency.
Soon the only ponies that were in motion were the three performers. The audience were like statues, clinging on every note that resonated. From the corner of her eye, Sonorous spotted a quadricolored mane from the top balcony. She knew who that mane belonged to, mentally cursing her whimsical luck. Returning her attention back to performing, the phrase c'est la vie, crossed her mind.
Up high in one of the balconies, two alicorn sisters listen and unwound. Celestia and Luna, wanting to escape their stuffy routine, lounged on the couch. Celestia, who had a dreamy expression, was entranced by the music. Luna, who was enjoying the symphony, wasn't as invested as her sister. She was still mulling everything over, hoping to realize something she had overlooked.
Replaying the entire account in her head, every detail being scrutinized. More then once Luna had to chase away the tranquil melody. The music beckoning her to kick her hooves up and relax. She had to admit this music was invoking some very powerful emotions. Memories of Luna's foalhood began to reemerged in her mind, her being wrapped in a warm blanket, and snuggled by her parents.
Luna wiped a tear from her eye, these precious memories washing over her. Despite her resolve, she succumbed to the mesmerizing music. With a quick glance, she saw that even Celestia was affected. Her face and posture were as rigid as ever but Luna knew better. It was her eyes that told of her current emotional state.
To Luna's surprise however she spotted a streak of wet fur down her sister's cheek. The only other moment she had seen her sister shed tears was when their parents passed on. Luna gave Celestia a loving nuzzle against her neck. In turn, Celestia pulled her sister into a loving hug. The Princesses of Equestria wasn't the only ponies that were acting nostalgic.
Throughout the building, everypony was enamored by the gentle resonance of the music. Octavia knew that music could move a pony to emotional outbursts, having witnessed this occurrence during past concerts. However she struggled to understand how every single pony, within her sight, was affected to such an extreme.
With the reason eluding, she focused her attention back to the ever approaching finale. The trio slowed their pace, with a final note, Octavia lowered her bow. With a few more notes, Sonorous did the same, leaving Vinyl to play a solo. The majestic melody that once filled the warehouse, slowly parted for Vinyl's melody. Only a select few knew that she, secretly, enjoyed classical music.
Especially string instruments for their low bass sounds. Vinyl, manipulating her equipment with skill, produced a slow, deep, and soulful melody. After a short piece, she stopped playing, the lingering melody echoing off the walls. Once silence returned, the audience let out an onslaught of thunderous applause. The trio began to bow toward the audience, basking in their admiration.
While she bowed, Sonorous began to feast on the love that permeated the room. After several moments of feeding, she stopped, her appetite was thoroughly satisfied. The descending curtain finally separated the audience from the stage. Her contentment was pushed aside as Sonorous was glomped by the overjoyed mares.
"That was superb," Octavia exclaimed after she had released her hug. " T hat was completely off the charts," Vinyl shouted over the applause. Flashing a grin, " y e a we are pretty great," Sonorous boasted while straightening up. Octavia just shook her head and chuckled, " y ou're as incorrigible as Vinyl."
Vinyl began to moon trot in place, she was on cloud nine at the moment. The cheering slowly fading into low murmurs as the crowd departed. Sonorous, Octavia, and Vinyl began chatting as they packed their equipment. Once the murmurs died out they began to leave, Octavia lifted the curtain with a hoof for them to depart through.
However before anypony could move, the small opening was encased with an orange glow. The opening grew wider, revealing Princess Celestia with Princess Luna by her side. "Good evening ladies, are we intruding?" Celestia inquired. Octavia gave a slight bow while Sonorous and Vinyl remained standing since they were levitating heavy equipment.
" W e'd like to express our admiration for your beautiful performance," Celestia spoke as Octavia recovered herself. "However a situation has occurred and we ' d appreciate your cooperation in the matter , " she continued. Octavia inquired as to how they could assist them.
"We have a s usp i cion that changelings might be in the vicinity ," Celestia replied with a slight sternness in her voice. Both Octavia and Vinyl felt as if their hooves were made of lead, though their faces never wavered. "We've already checked everypony here," Luna's eyes shifted to the three musicians before continuing coldly.
"Except y ou three mares, prepare to be examined ." " P lease set down your equipment and step forward , one at a time," Celestia asked in a soft voice. Octavia, being closest to Celestia, approached the princesses. Her horn ignited with magic, soon a cone of magic swirled around Octavia.
Moments passed before her magic faded from around her. A smile spread across Celestia's face, "you've passed." Sonorous was lost in her thoughts, weighing her options.Yet every course of action didn't present a very high success rate. She was snapped back to reality when Celestia called her name. Celestia waited for Sonorous to step up but she didn't.
After several seconds of silence, Celestia repeated her request. Sonorous scoffed while placing a hoof on her chest, "I grow tired of this charade, wouldn't you agree . " A blazing torrent of green flame engulfed her, revealing Chrysalis seconds later. Both Celestia and Luna instantly prepared for a fight, horns blazing with magic.
Chrysalis, on the other hoof, began to stroll defiantly toward them. "Are you really so eager to fight that you'd risk causing a riot?" Chrysalis cooed sickly. "Just imagine all the panic and collateral damage that would e nsue ," she finished, her fangs fully visible now.
Not backing down, Celestia growled through gritted teeth, "What are you proposing then changeling!" "That's q ueen c hangeling to you," Chrysalis retorted, earning her a pair of death glares. "I think your throne room would be more isolated ," she sneered.
Luna took a couple of steps as she growled, "how dare you presume to order us, we should slay you where you stand and be done!" " Silence child, we're trying to have a conversation , " Chrysalis retortd. Luna was fuming, her wings unfurled, she was ready to attack.
With a solemn stare from Celestia, Luna begrudgingly folded her wings as she snorted in anger. Celestia turned to face Chrysalis again " we shall adjourn to the throne room . " She leaned over to whisper into her sister's ear, with a nod, Luna teleported away. Celestia then motioned for Octavia and Vinyl to come closer.
With confused expressions, they gather closer. The lowered curtain obscured the brilliant flash from Celestia's teleportation spell. They instantly appeared in the throne room, Octavia and Vinyl slightly dazed from the bright light. In the center of the room stood Luna, behind her stood The Bearers of Harmony.
"Why are they here," Chrysalis hissed. Completely ignoring her, Celestia turned to Octavia and Vinyl. "You have one chance, why didn't you report Chrysalis to the guards , " she demanded in a harsh tone. Both ponies thought hard for an explanation that would justify the concealment of Chrysalis.
However their thoughts were broken when Chrysalis mocked, "its obvious you foal, they were coerced." "Silence thy tongue , if we wanted your opinion, we'd beat it out of you!" Luna shouted. In response, Chrysalis let out a deep menacing laugh.
"Pray tell, what is so funny," Luna growled as anger rose in her voice. " I finally understand why there are two r ulers of Equestria, there isn't a brain between either of you!" Chrysalis broke into another fit of laughter. Celestia stood there, calm and collective, her sister however was seething in rage.
"I f thou won't still thy tongue then we'll remove it ! " Luna's voice escalating into a Royal Shout. A dark blue bolt leaped from her horn and raced toward Chrysalis. In response, Chrysalis' horn flared to life, coating a forehoof in magic. With a swift gesture of her enhanced hoof, Chrysalis smacked the bolt away with ease.
It zoomed wildly through the air until colliding into the ceiling and exploded. "Is that all you've got, hardly worth my effort," Chrysalis gleefully taunted. Dark flames began to engulfed a furious Luna. Her appearance was being seared away by the swirling flames. Moments later, as the flames receded, the visage of Nightmare Moon was revealed.
"Feast your eyes upon our glory , for its the last thing you'll ever see ! " Nightmare Moon bellowed. A dark cyan aura radiated from the transformed alicorn's horn. Chrysalis erected a barrier just before a jet of destructive magic could reach her. A smirked across her face, she could feel Nightmare Moon's unbridled power.
Now we have a battle, she thought as the shield began to morph into a concave dome. With careful adjustments, Chrysalis had successfully ricocheted the attack back toward Nightmare Moon. Unable to dodge, she was sent careening backwards into a wall. Large cracks formed from the impact, Nightmare Moon flopped from the wall to lay motionless on the floor.
A low chuckle issued from Chrysalis as Celestia teleported to her sister's side. Twilight rallied her friends and charged. Octavia and Vinyl, not wanting to see anymore violence, dashed in between them. The two mares stood in between Chrysalis and the six charging ponies. Side by side, faced in opposite directions, they stared at the combatants.
Both ponies wore pleading expressions, their fear hidden behind a forced facade. The six ponies relented their charge, not wanting to endanger their friends. Chrysalis didn't show such restraint, lifting up the six ponies, she chucked them several feet away. Celestia, who wasn't able to wake her sister, turned her flaring eyes toward Chrysalis.
She was unable to hear nor did she care what was being said between the three of them. Summoning a halberd of pure orange light, Celestia sped toward the group with her weapon poised to impale them. She took off with such velocity, a quadri-colored streak trailing behind her. Chrysalis, who was engaged with Octavia and Vinyl, caught sight of the charging princess.
Wrapping them in telekinesis, she pushed the two mares several feet away. The halberd struck the exoskeleton that covered her rib cage, causing it to shatter. Chrysalis was sent flying back several feet from the attack. She quickly got to her hooves and with a quick assessment found that she was mostly unscathed, despite her now exposed ribs.
Chrysalis immediately scanned the area, searching for Celestia. Her ears flicked to the sound of ruffling feathers. With a skyward glace, Celestia was diving fast, her halberd high above her head. The princess had a mad gleam in her eyes, desiring to cleave the changeling queen in half.
Chrysalis attempted to dodge yet only her forehooves left the ground, causing her to flop hard against the floor. Her rear hooves, engulfed in a purple glow, was held firmly to the floor. Returned her gaze back to Celestia, her horn blazed to life. The halberd began its deadly arc, clanging loudly as dust and debris flew from the newly damaged floor.
The dust slowly dissipated, two silhouettes could be seen. The glowing halberd was shaking erratically as if being pushed back. Without warning, a mighty gust of wind expelled the dust outwards. Leaping upward to avoid being blinded, Celestia hovered in the air. The six mares gasped as they starred at Chrysalis getting to her hooves, brandishing a conjured scimitar of pure magic.
Landing, Celestia pointed the tip of her halberd toward Chrysalis. Channeling magic through it, a sphere of light began to form. Chrysalis rushed toward Celestia, scimitar drawn to the side. All she needed was a clean stroke, to end it all. The magical projectile, free from its confinement, was hurling toward Chrysalis. The six mares stared, wondering what Chrysalis was planning.
Chrysalis and the ball of energy raced toward each other. She grinned, mere inches from colliding, it was time to enact her plan. A bright flash lit the room followed by a couple more. An eep echoed from Rarity as she vanished. Panic engulfed her friends as they stared at where she had been standing moments before.
The ball of energy smashed into the wall, leaving the wall damaged and issuing a loud sound that bounced off the walls. Once her vision readjusted, she saw that her muzzle was inches away from Celestia's slowly disintegrating halberd. Rarity's eyes traced up the fading shaft, landing on the alicorn's twisted expression.
She gave an ear splitting shriek of terror as the sound of tearing flesh greeted her ears. Chrysalis stood perpendicular to the mid-section of Celestia, her scimitar had completely impaled the princess' barrel. Blood began to pour onto the ground as Chrysalis dispelled her weapon. Following that up with a blast of magic, Celestia went skidding across the floor leaving a blood trail in her wake.
Rarity tried to flee but was hoisted into the air by her tail. Caught in Chrysalis' telekinesis she was twirled in the air, gasps of pain escaping her mouth. The remaining five rushed to assist but was bowled over by the airborne unicorn. " If you interfere again, you won't be so lucky ," Chrysalis growled.
Several moans rose from the six, Chrysalis ignored them, her sight was set on Nightmare moon as she got back to her hooves. Amusement creased her lips, seeing that she was raring for a second round. They both stared at each other for several moments, before Nightmare Moon began her attack. Teleporting beside Chrysalis, she bucked her in the ribs.
Falling to her side in pain, Nightmare Moon reared her front hooves in the air. Chrysalis barely rolled away before her head could be crushed, the marble suffering the mare's wrath instead. Leaping back to her hooves, the changeling queen prepared for another attack. She once again teleported, this time behind Chrysalis. However she was ready, teleporting before Nightmare Moon could attack.
She frantically searched for Chrysalis, her vengeance not yet sated. With a shout from Applejack, Nightmare Moon shot straight into the air. Two large slabs of debris slammed together, nearly crushing her. Octavia and Vinyl stood watching in horror, "I've had enough of this!" Octavia fumed. She spotted Celestia beginning to stir from where she landed.
They quickly made their way to her, noticing that her wounds were regenerating. The white alicorn finally regained her balance and was about to rejoin the battle when she spotted the two mares beside her. "It would be best if you two cleared out," Celestia stated. they held their ground which caused her to stare at them with disdain.
"With all due respect princess but this needs to end," Vinyl yelled. "That's what we're trying to do ," Celestia shouted in disbelief. Octavia was quickly losing her patience. " H as it occurred to you that Queen Chrysalis might have changed?" Octavia spoke in a raised tone.
Celestia coldly stared at Octavia, sounds of battle and destruction filling the air. " S he coerced your silence, put everypony in danger, yet you still defend her?" Celestia growled stepping toward her.
"She fights us right now, how can you even entertain the notion!" Celestia was now screaming.
"She hurt my sister, attempted to kill me, fed upon numerous ponies, Chrysalis has definitely changed... F OR THE WORST ! The usually calm alicorn, now towered over the two mares. Octavia was cowering from Celestia's menacing aura. Vinyl didn't flinch, shouting back at the alicorn, she reminding her that it was Luna that conjured the first spell.
Celestia thought about her words and as she did so, her rage faded away. " Unfortun ate ly you are correct, it was my sister's overzealous nature that has caused this," she stated. "However that doesn't excuse Chrysalis goading her either." she added in a sterner tone.
Vinyl nodded in agreement, Octavia slowly peeked out from under her hooves. "If Chrysalis truly is reformed, we need to stop this now," she waved her hoof around, displaying all the destruction.
High above them, Chrysalis and Nightmare Moon fought with intense savagery.
Regardless of what strategy they deployed neither pony gained any substantial advantage. Dodging Chrysalis' latest attack, a sharp toothy smile adorn Nightmare Moon's face as she teleported behind her. Anticipating the maneuver, Chrysalis flew high just as a huge sphere of magic singed the tip of her tail. Before she could retaliate, Chrysalis caught a sight that twisted her gut.
The stray blast of incendiary magic was heading in the direction of two ponies and one alicorn. Without hesitation Chrysalis teleported to face the three mares while erecting a shield behind her. " Chrysalis wh at are yo ... " Celestia was cut off by the roaring collision of magic and shield.
Octavia and Vinyl gasped as they stared at an exhausted Chrysalis. She was breathing hard from battle, her shield was shaking from the spell's impact. "Get out of here," she grunted between ragged breathes. Both mares shook their heads vigorously, Celestia couldn't believe what she saw.
They began to protest yet fell silent when Chrysalis demanded their retreat from the vicinity. The mares still refused to heed her words, instead drawing closer with concern. "Don't just stand there, s ave them , " Chrysalis barked at Celestia. Celestia regained her voice and was about to speak but was cut off again.
" Stop bucking around you worthless alicorn ," Chrysalis shouted, training her eyes on Celestia. With an angry snort, she returned the glared with her own. Staring into Chrysalis' eyes, a sudden realization dawned on her. Reflected in her eye wasn't anger nor hate, at this moment there was only a plea for assistance.
An orange glow engulfed Octavia and Vinyl, with a nod of understanding, the three of them vanished. Celestia, Octavia, and Vinyl appear in front of Twilight and her friends. Chrysalis gave a sigh of relief as cracks from her shield sounded behind her. At least they were safe, she thought. A loud shattering sound could be heard, the shield finally gave way to the magical onslaught.
Chrysalis closed her eyes, a single tear rolled down her cheek. Although weakened by the shield, the magical energies began to sear her backside. Her mane and tail burst into flames, the pain was excruciating. She fought against screaming, they didn't deserve to hear her agony... They didn't need to.
Everypony watched in horror as the form of the changeling queen was engulfed in a red and orange fury of flames. A thunderous sound reverberated throughout the room as the floor was ripped asunder. Dust and chunks of flying marble issued from the newly formed crater. Minutes passed before the debris stopped raining down.
A wind spell from Twilight helped to disperse the dust. Revealing two shields, one of orange, the other of dark blue. As Nightmare Moon descended to the floor, she dispelled both her shield and transformation. "That was quite an invigorating battle," Luna spoke with enthusiasm while staring at the small crater.
" W ouldst thou not agree sis..." Luna stopped suddenly as her eyes fell upon the groups unusual behavior. There stood Twilight and her friends, with bemused expressions. Celestia wore a frown with her eyes staring at the floor but her eyes couldn't hide the maelstrom of sadness within. Stranger still was Octavia and Vinyl, who were laying on the floor sobbing uncontrollable.
Celestia, who had also dropped her shield, strolled over to stand next to her sister. "Luna," Celestia spoke solemnly, " W e ' ve made a grave mistake . " Luna listened to her sister's words as she observed the group. After she had finished explaining, Luna's head dropped as she approached the mourning mares.
Celestia trotted beside her sister, stopping a foot away from Octavia and Vinyl. Luna spoke in her most humble tone, "We apologize for our rash behavior and offer our condo..." A frantic Vinyl snapped her head up to stare at the princesses with bloodshot eyes. "I don't want to hear your damn excuses, words are cheap and easy to give , " she yelled.
Twilight fainted from the sheer shock of the abusive tone toward the princesses. The remaining five tried to rouse her. Octavia didn't stir at all, she was still moping on the floor. Barely listening to Vinyl berate the princesses, she felt like she had lost more then a fellow musician. It had felt like Sonorous had challenged her to be a better performer.
Almost as if they were cut from the same cloth of musical prowess. Octavia busted into more tears as the realization of the situation dawned on her again. Vinyl, who had shouted her frustrations out, now brooded quietly. Her anger quickly vanished when she heard Octavia's quiet sobs. Rushing over to her mare friend, she gently placed a hoof across Octavia's withers.
Jolted by the sudden contact, Octavia lifted her head up to see who it was. Seeing that it was Vinyl, she flung her hooves around her neck, sobbing into her mane. Unable to maintain her composure, Vinyl joined Octavia, mourning for Chrysalis' passing. The princesses, couldn't help but feel ashamed for how everything turned out.
The next morning was bright and beautiful, not a cloud in the sky. The whole of Canterlot was still buzzing about the concert that was held the previous night. Nopony, except the few witnesses, even knew what happened afterward, Celestia had ordered discretion from the guards. Twilight and her friends would most certainly keep this secret.
After some negotiations, and a memorial statue of Sonorous that would be erected in Ponyville. Celestia had gotten both Octavia and Vinyl's word of silence as well. In the guest wing of the castle, the sun had almost reached its peak in the sky. Octavia was the first to wake up, she got out of bed and trotted onto the balcony.
Several long silent moments passed before she reenter the room. Trotting up to the bed where Vinyl was sleeping, she gently prodded her shoulder. " Huh, Octavia, what time is it?" Vinyl stammered as she rubbed her eyes. "It's time we returned home," she spoke in a somber tone. "Ok, after breakfast though," Vinyl muttered as she got out of bed.
Octavia was about to say the actual time but stopped. Instead she replied, " how about a cup of coffee instead?" Looking into her pained eyes, Vinyl nodded in agreement, before they left the room. The two musicians strolled through the halls of the castle until they found the exit. The eyes of every guard followed them as they passed by.
Standing at the ready to offer their assistance to the mares, if needed. As they passed through the palace double doors, Octavia paused before turning to face one of the guards. "Could you please convey o ur appreciation to the princesses for letting us stay at the palace," Octavia solemnly stated.
"Yes m a'am," the guard replied in a deep monotone. Octavia gave her thanks, then turned to depart with Vinyl. After a stop at Pony Joe's Donut Shop for a cup of coffee, they returned to the warehouse to retrieve their instruments. They were quite shocked when they saw several carts loading up the equipment.
Both ponies ran over to find the lead pony and demand some answers. Upon their inquiry, the senior pony replied that Princess Luna had arranged for the transportation of equipment. Another mover approached the three with a letter in his magic. "Everything is loaded and secured but we found this letter," he said as he levitated it up to expose the names on the envelop.
Octavia and Vinyl gasped as they spotted Sonorous' name as well as theirs. "It appears that this letter was meant for both of you," he said in a gruff voice. Vinyl levitated the letter with her magic, to hover in front of them, before opening it. Their curiosity instantly shifted to surprise when they began to silently read it.
- Dear Octavia and Vinyl ,
I've never had to write a letter like this, then again I've never had a reason to. I just wanted to inform you that I've thoroughly enjoyed these last several days . D espite me being different from your average pony , you eventually accepted me.
Y ou two have bec o me more then acquaint a nces , dare I say, my friends. However I'm afraid t hat my past sins have caught up to me . If I no longer share your company , I hope that my absence won't dampen your spirits . Both of y ou have illuminated my life in a way I never thought possible. Be strong and never back down from any course you may pursue .
Sincerely ,
Your friend Sonorous-
Both Octavia and Vinyl felt tears welling up in their eyes again, as they finished reading. Overcome by emotions, they clung together in a tight hug. Befriending Sonorous was a huge risk for them, they imagined it was the same for her as well. Although they had less then a week together, they would never forget her.
After stopping in the center of the floor, she let go of Sonorous' hoof and started dancing. Octavia swayed on her hooves to the music. Occasionally rearing on her hind legs to jab at the air. Sonorous quickly looked for an escape route but sighed when none was discovered. Reluctantly, along with some prodding, she started to awkwardly dance.
Octavia soon took notice and stopped, putting a hoof on Sonorous' withers to stop her as well. Giving a slight giggle, she lead back to the bar. "I guess you weren't kidding when you said you couldn't dance," Octavia said finally cotaining her laughter. Sonorous gave Octavia an exasperated sigh, "I told you that I couldn't dance."
Octavia spoke, "Oh don't worry Sonorous, I doubt anypony even noticed, besides we're here to have fun . " "Easy for you to say Octavia, you've had more practice," Sonorous retorted with a smirk. They both shared a laugh before ordering a couple of ciders. Vinyl's had dropped the snare drum and replaced it with a mix of synthesized sound effects and maracas.
The music's pace had actually increased in tempo, while the electric guitar filled the music full of high pitched rhythm. Sonorous had difficulty placing the reason for the sound effects though. Shrugging, she took a sip from her mug, relaxed, and just listened to the music. Early the next morning, the party finally dispersed.
Vinyl headed to the bar for a cider and pulled up a stool next to Sonorous. "So how did you enjoy my type of music?" she inquired. "I thought it was very interesting, it's definitely a beat you could dance to." " I f one could dance ," Sonorous confessed. Vinyl let out a chuckle as she recalled Sonorous' awkward dancing.
Sonorous felt a slight fluster at Vinyl's laughter. "Don't feel to bad, during T he Galloping Gala, Octavia pulled me to the dance floor," Vinyl stated. "It was a trav e sty, I still believe that a new born foal could have danced better," the mare chuckled.
Sonorous felt a smile creep upon her lips, imagining a stumbling, dancing Vinyl. " What's so funny?" Octavia asked as she joined the two at the bar. Sonorous retold Vinyl's attempt to dance at the gala. Octavia started to protest but Vinyl interrupted by expressing how hilarious it was to watch Sonorous dancing.
By now Octavia was blushing from embarrassment, "pardon me for trying to add a little entertainment to your lives," she protested in a jiving tone. They all fell silent, before bursting out in laughter. After a while they stop as Octavia clearing her throat before speaking again. "Well I was wondering if we'd take this opp o rtunity to introduce our newest acq u aint a nce to Canterlot ,"
She threw a hoof over Sonorous' back. A quizzical grin came across her face, which was noticed by both mares. However Vinyl drooped her head a little at the prospect. " I know that you felt left out last time, so maybe you could join the performance" Octavia chimed. Vinyl's ears perked back up at this, both mares now looked at Sonorous.
Their eyes grew wide, as if pleading, Sonorous brought a hoof to her chin as if thinking. Finally, after a moment, she nodding in agreement, especially since that meant she would have more time for scouting out the city. Octavia and Vinyl began discussing about the preparations for the next performance.
Another thought crossed her mind that warmed her like the sun. If the high attendance from Vinyl's party was any indication. The ponies that would attend this event would be enormous, it would be a very delicious meal. Sonorous let out a very satisfying sigh, eyes glazed over in bliss.
The thought of all the love that would be permeating through the room, nearly made her drool. She was snapped out of her daydream by both mares staring blankly at her. Sonorous looked inquiringly at their blank stares. Starting to feel uncomfortable, she asked if there was something wrong. Vinyl broke the silence with a chuckle, " I've never seen a pony sleep sitting up. "
"Vinyl be sensible, she's obviously tired," Octavia scolded her. Sonorous silently thanked Octavia for the plausible excuse. Since explaining her previous thoughts would no doubt cause problems for her. "I guess we better go find a h otel and get some sleep," Octavia droned as exhaustion crept upon her.
Letting out a yarn, Vinyl began to rub her eyes. The three mares trotted out the door and up the street looking for a place to stay. Sonorous trotting a couple of paces behind, slightly concerned that she might be exposed. She knew that she couldn't maintain her disguise while she slept.
Teleporting away was out of the question considering they might wake up and notice her gone. She couldn't hope that the hotel would have a separate room to hide out in. Sonorous would just have to stay awake all night. Octavia and Vinyl noticing that she was trailing behind. Vinyl turned her head to shout over her shoulder.
"Shake a hoof, we'll find a place soon. " Picking up her pace, Sonorous caught up with them. My situation just keeps getting better and better, she thought sarcastically. After an hour of trotting, Octavia, Sonorous, and Vinyl exited the Gentle Hoof Inn, with a key levitating above Vinyl. Octavia was now dragging her hooves, fighting against exhaustion.
Vinyl was still pretty hyped, but compared to her normal levels, she was wearing thin. Sonorous was the most aware of the three, even if she was tired, she had to stay awake. Vinyl opened the door, Octavia stumbled into the room and plopped onto the bed. Vinyl spoke drowsily, " I hope you don't mind sharing a room, this was all they had left ."
"At least we were lucky enough they had a room with three beds," Sonorous replied. "Nah, we'd only be in trouble if there was only one bed," Vinyl spoke sheepishly. Sonorous sighed as she trotted over to a bed and pretended to sleep. Soon Vinyl could be heard laying down as well. This was going to be a very long night, Sonorous thought as she sat back up.
An hour turned to two, then four, the blue unicorn with the dark magenta mane was gone. In her place was Chrysalis, conserving her energy, she let the disguise fade. Bored out of her mind, she began levitating random objects in the room. She could leave at anytime but the risk of detection was something she wanted to avoid. Even if she wasn't discovered, teleportation would drain her meager magic reserves.
All she could do was slowly toll away until Octavia and Vinyl woke up. Chrysalis tried everything to pass, what seems like an eternity. She finally resigned to laying on the bed and waiting it out. Her eye lids began to droop, despite her efforts, sleep slowly claimed her. She was back at her hive, standing in front of several platoons of drones.
Her briefing to the troops was suddenly interrupted as two drones in the front row began to stutter in horror. Her vision began to blur into a mixture of color, suddenly Chrysalis' eyes popped open. BUCK I FELL ASLEEP, Chrysalis yelled in her head, as she quickly tried to shape shift. The sudden gasps from Octavia and Vinyl informed Chrysalis that it was to late.
Chrysalis leaped from her bed to see a terrified Octavia and Vinyl, trying desperately to escape. Running over to stand behind them, "You need to stop and listen," She demanded. Immediately rapping the two mares in magic to muffle their panicked voices. Both ponies began screaming within their prison.
Back at Ponyville, Pinkie Pie was at Applejack's cart purchasing apples. Both ponies immediately pause as Pinkie Pie started to shudder and bounce around uncontrollable. This unintentional action subsided after a few seconds, leaving a gasping Pinkie Pie. "My Pinkie senses are tingling," she muttered before rocketing off to find Twilight. The lavender alicorn had asked Pinkie Pie to relay any indications of any doozy events that her senses may indicate.
Twilight was in her library, organizing a new shipment of books that just came in. The Ponyville library was a huge tree house that was converted into an actual house when Twilight Sparkle began living in Ponyville. Without warning, Pinkie Pie rushed through the door with the force of a typhoon. The library door was now swinging off a damaged hinge.
Pinkie Pie stopped in front of Twilight and began to speak sporadic gibberish. Twilight looked from her busted door to the crazed party pony. She put a hoof to Pinkie Pie's muzzle, which seemed to calm her down. "Now tell me what's so important," she inquired. Pinkie Pie took a deep breath before rambling a mile a minute.
"Well I was just taking a stroll down the road, I was thinking about making apple cupcakes." " S o I went to A pplejack's cart to buy some apples ." " Then i n the middle of buying some apples, m y Pinkie S ense went all crazy like." " T hen I rushed over here and now here I am," finishing her rant before gasping for air.
Twilight's ears perked up at the mention of her Pinkie's senses going off. Twilight replied, " when your entire body shudders and shakes," pausing briefly as she remembered its relevance."T hat means a doozy has happened right?" She finished, Pinkie Pie nodded her head furiously in agreement.
I wonder what has happened? she mused pacing around the library. Pinkie Pie contemplated this as well however she quickly got bored and bounced off. Back in Canterlot, Sonorous along with Octavia and Vinyl trotted back to the party flat. Vinyl's equipment was still set up from the night before, exactly as it was when they left.
Vinyl stepped behind the table with a puzzled look at them. "How are we go ing to practice when I'm the only pony that can practice " Vinyl queried. "Don't worry about that, we'll just match your p erformance ," Octavia answered. Vinyl began to select the rhythm, beat, and tone that she thought would be a good match.
The two ponies, with their ears honed to Vinyl, listening to her rehearsal. The rest of the day past by uneventful, save for the occasional pony wondering in to listen. After a late lunch and a few helpful suggestions from Octavia and Sonorous, they returned to the warehouse. Sonorous and Octavia listened intently while she continued her rehearsal.
After a couple more hours Vinyl stopped, confident that she had perfected her musical piece. Both ponies clopped their hooves together as Vinyl descended the stage. Octavia gasped with surprise, " T hat was marvelous , I didn't think you could play classical that well !"
"You're truly talented to be able to compose in a style that is foreign to you," Sonorous spoke with a grin. Vinyl couldn't help but blush at such compliments. She felt that anymore practice wouldn't offer much improvement. So instead she asked when they should schedule their performance.
Octavia informed them that she might have mentioned it to Good Fortune earlier that morning before their departure. The other two mares snapped their necks to look at Octavia in surprise. She just smiled slyly, "it was the reason I suggested th is practice for Vinyl ." It was just a coincidence that it also provided a distraction from the unexpected surprise we encountered when we woke up, she thought to herself.
"Well if you feel ready Vinyl, we could drop by Good Fortune's house later ," Octavia mentioned, excitement building in her voice. Vinyl gave a nod, "well let's go and set it all up," Sonorous spoke. The three ponies left the warehouse, with Sonorous trotting ahead of them.
Octavia leaned in close to Vinyl as she whispered "Do you think we can trust her, she is the changeling queen after all . " Trotting down the street with no clear destination, the three were just strolling along. Vinyl turned her head slightly to see the concern on Octavia's face, she shared that concern.
Replying in a low voice, "I know we told her that we'd cooperate but I don't really know." "If she was to do something, wouldn't she have done so already?" Vinyl muttered with an uncertain tone. "I guess we'll just have to play it by ear," Octavia started before catching a glimpse of Sonorous' ear twitch from her peripheral vision.
Sonorous could feel her anger flare up again. Not that she completely trusted their word but thought they at least had an agreement. Stifling her anger, she turned her head to ask if either of them knew where Good Fortune could be found. Octavia thought for a moment while the three continued to walk down the street.
"I believe that he said he was staying at the Econo Fore-lough," replied the mare. Sonorous stopped, allowing Vinyl and Octavia to lead. " I f we follow this way then take a left turn, we should be close," Octavia explained. The three ponies made their way to Good Fortune's apartment.
Several hours of silence was broken when Good Fortune welcomed them in to discuss the details of their performance. It was almost nightfall when everything was set and Good Fortune waved off the musicians. With bellies growling, they headed toward a bar and grill. Octavia and Vinyl was enjoying the good food and drink they had ordered from the menu.
Sonorous had a couple mugs of cider, her transformed body could digest food, but she'd never acquired a taste for it. A crescent moon shone down upon them as they opened the door to their room. Vinyl went in to relax, Octavia was about to follow but stopped. Sonorous had started to walk away in search of a place to spend the night.
"Where are you going?" Octavia asked. Sonorous narrowed her eyes at her, thinking the reason should be obvious. "Hey are you two gonna stay out there all night," Vinyl yelled from inside. Octavia nudged her head toward the room before trotting inside. While Sonorous, wondering what they wanted, followed behind.
When she entered the room, there sat both ponies on the edge of a bed. Closing the door, Sonorous turned to see what they had to say. Octavia began by asking again why she was about to leave. Sonorous spoke in a definite tone, " After you discovered my true identity, it was either leave or kill you both. "
They both gasped at her candor, unsure if their fate was sealed when Sonorous followed them in. Several tense moments past before Octavia gathered her courage to speak, still paler then usual. "A.. are you going to kill us , " she stuttered, a shrug of her shoulders was Octavia's only response. Sonorous watched them with interest, against their fear, curiosity won out.
Sitting on her haunches, she decided that they at least deserved some answers, especially after today. Octavia continued, "could you drop your disguise first, we might as well get use to your true form ." Well if they insisted, who was she to argue and besides no energy drain would be great.
In a flash, Sonorous disappeared, revealing Chrysalis in her place. Octavia and Vinyl wrenched slight at the queen's visage, not use to seeing a changeling this close. Chrysalis smirked, her interest rising, even her form didn't scare them like it did before. It was Vinyl's turn to ask a question, "why d id you stay and travel with us to C anterlot?"
Chrysalis gave a small smile, a gesture that looked a little disturbing with the exposure of her fangs. She replied, "I continued to stick around because distracted ponies ma k e easy meals . " Both of their faces twisted in horror at her statement.
Chrysalis, not wanting another panic added, "I only devoured enough love to satisfy my appetite ." "Besides i f you recall, there wasn't any injured pon ie s afterward . "
The other two mares seemed to settle down a little, recalling that Chrysalis had been correct.
"So what exactly happens when you eat their love?" Vinyl continued. Eyes narrowed as she answered, " nothing if only a little love is consumed however the more consumption , the worse the effects become." A sigh of relief issued from them, they recalled that everypony didn't seem to have suffered any severe side effects.
Chrysalis suspected that there was a point Vinyl was dancing around. Vinyl began to speak but was interrupted by Chrysalis, who bluntly asked if there was a point. With a deep sigh, she asked the question that was on her mind since this morning," h ave you ever fed upon us?" Without hesitation, Chrysalis pointed a hoof to Vinyl and replied, "yes but it was only you ."
Octavia gasped while Vinyl wore a more puzzled expression. "You fed on my love, when did it happen?" she pried. Not quite sure if it was nervousness or curiosity that carried upon her voice. "It was when I first met you," Chrysalis stated. Octavia's shock turn into a stern look, anger danced in her eyes at hearing the confession.
Chrysalis stared right back at Octavia, with an indifferent expression. Vinyl just sat in thought, she tried to recall the experience of having been fed upon. Several minutes passed before the silence was broken by a low growling sound. Octavia and Vinyl look at Chrysalis, as the source of the noise. Chrysalis scoffed at their accusing looks, while trying to keep her stomach silent.
Vinyl hopped off the bed and trotted toward her, another grumbling sounded again. "Why didn't you say you were hungry?" Vinyl asked softly. Both the question and the softness of the speaker were very unusual. Chrysalis stared hard at Vinyl, as she hissed, "Why would either of you remotely care."
Octavia, now on her hooves, strolled over to sit next to Vinyl. She sighed before speaking, "Personally, I wouldn't care except you seem like you don't want to cause any harm. " "Also whether you meant to or not, you've actually did help the citizens of Ponyville "
" Finally, you're actually talking to us about it, instead of the alternative ." Octavia said that last part with a relieved chuckle. Chrysalis couldn't believe this, she was being pitied by ponies. Even if she was beginning to respect them, being pitied was a very insulting feeling for the changeling queen.
She mentally took a double take at her last thought, when did she start respecting them. They were prey, her food and nothing more, they didn't deserve respect. Yet her she was, having a conversation instead of depositing their corpses into the nearest sewer. "Then what do you propose we do," Chrysalis muttered.
"Well as you've mentioned before that side effects varied d epend ing on how much you feed upon a pony," Vinyl stated. Octavia's eyes grew wide as she realized where she was heading this conversation to. "You may feed upon my love ," Vinyl blurted out.
Chrysalis, having caught on at what Vinyl was suggesting, was still shocked at this declaration. In all her life, she had never seen a pony that offered their love willingly. Chrysalis approached her, until they were nose to nose. "What you say is true however since I haven't fed for a couple of days , the side effects would be more severe."
Octavia stomped her hoof down, speaking sharply, "although very admirable, you 're very fo a lish to think that I'd allow that!" They both turned to look at her which made her shy back a little. Octavia spoke in a shaky voice, "well I can't have her being all droopy or unconscious ."
Octavia swallowed hard before continuing, "news of a changeling attack would be horrible. " The two mares tilted their heads at her, causing her to avoid their gaze. Octavia shut her eyes tight and squeaked, "you can have some of my love as well." Vinyl's jaw dropped yet Chrysalis only looked at her with curiosity.
" Why would you offer such a thing, you obviously don't like me now that the cat is out of the bag," she grunted. There was no reply which caused Chrysalis to rolled her eyes." I f I'm to understand this, you're willing to exchange your love in order to lessen the effects on Vinyl." Octavia nodded her head, still holding her eyes shut. " A s you wish," Chrysalis spoke in a calm tone.
Chrysalis' horn began to glow a bright emerald, reaching out to sheer away love from the two mares. Vinyl just sat on her haunches however Octavia began to shake as a light chill washed over her. A few seconds passed, to Octavia in felt longer, until a hoof nudged her left cheek. She precariously opened an eye, then the other.
Across from her sat Chrysalis, her eyes closed, savoring the meal. Octavia looked toward Vinyl, confusion written on her face. Vinyl had her hooves over her muzzle, stifling a giggle. Looking back to Chrysalis, who was now smiling, Octavia was completely at a loss for words. "Was that it?" Octavia finally asked, Chrysalis slowly nodded.
"Why did I feel cold," she pressed on, feeling her body slowly warming back up. Chrysalis informed them that when changelings devoured love, it leaves a cold, empty space within. Although the smaller love consumed, the smaller that void would be. Since love was siphoned from both of you, neither of you had to bear the full blunt of its effects.
A rigid breath exhaled from Octavia's mouth, Chrysalis stood up and trotted toward her bed. Pulling back the covers, she turned to Octavia and Vinyl. With a slight hesitation and uneasiness Chrysalis spoke, "I... umm.. well .." Chrysalis trailed off, never having to thank any creature for devouring their love before.
"It was to defuse a rather unusual situation," Octavia chimed in, once again avoiding her gaze. "Well despite the reason, I still appreciate it," Chrysalis replied. "If all your questions have been answered, then I suggest we get some sleep," she spoke dismissively. "Ch rysalis, could you stay awake a little while longer , this talk has been full of surprises but quite informative ," Octavia prompted.
Chrysalis gave a confused look but agreed just the same. The three ponies continued to talk well into the morning. Until Octavia and Vinyl gave a yawn before laying down on their beds. Apparently they were satisfied with the answers she provided or exhaustion over took them. Chrysalis laid down, still mulling over rather these two were truely trustworthy.
The Everfree Forest, a place where hidden dangers lay waiting for the unsuspecting traveler. By royal decree it was declared forbidden to all, hoping to prevent any injury or death. Timberwolves, ursas, manticores, cockatrices, among several other deadly creatures call the forest their home. Among the thickly grown forest also rested the ruined Castle of the Two Sisters. It's once marvelous splendor, now in ruins from a thousand years of decay.
After Luna's banishment, Celestia abandoned the castle, all its contents, and the painful memories it held; to a silent dirge within the Everfree Forest. On rare occasions, Twilight and her friends would visit the castle. They would usually peruse over the numerous rarities, ranging from royal banners, books, and anything else that caught their eye. However, those days have grown fewer as time marched on until they stopped altogether.
Several years past since the six ponies last visited the castle. However on this night an unusual pony approached the dilapidated castle. Loud hoof clops could be heard against a stone pathway. The mysterious pony stopped only when she reached the surprisingly intact door. With a grunt, the door to the castle flew from its hinges. The shadowy pony lowered its front hooves back onto the ground.
Landing on the ground with a loud thud, the strange pony continued into the castle. Trotting down the long hallway toward the old throne on the other side of the castle. The pony's path was clear of debris, despite the crumpling ceiling above. Small beams of moonlight shone through the ceiling, illuminating the floor in varying shape and sizes. The focus of the mysterious pony was transfixed on the ruined throne.
With each loud stomp the pony took, its disdain seemed to echo off the walls. The throne was nothing more then a mere phantom of its once elegance and prestige. Now at the foot of the crumbling throne, the pony stopped and glared. An eerily deep green glow began to emanate from the horn atop its head. In one swift movement, its head bowed low, horn crackling with stored power
An emerald stream jetted out, destroying the throne and a good portion of the wall behind it. Dust spewed into the air as debris crumbled down. Still seething with anger, the pony's wings rose high and stretched out as far as they could. With a mighty flap of her wings, waves of dust bellowed outward. The moonlight, no longer obstructed, poured into the opening. The enraged pony, now bathed in moonlight, was revealed to be the malevolent changeling queen known as Chrysalis.
Returning her insect-like wings to their resting position, under her hard shell. She trotted right out of the hole and into the silence of night. The moonlight shone brightly, illuminating her black insectoid like skin. Her mane and tail, which wafted in the gentle breeze, was a dark shade of Cyan. Upon her back adorn a hard, two toned, shell which started above her shoulder blades as a dark cyan color. As the shell ran the length of her back, its color began to lighten.
Until the end of the shell that rested above her flanks became a lime green shade. Attached to the mid-section of her shell was a partial exoskeleton. This sectional portion wrapped around her ribs, providing extra protection. A black metallic crown rested upon her head, six black metal spires rose out of the black circlet. These spires, although only three inches in height, rose in a circular-blossoming type of design. Six deep emerald globes embellished the tops of each spire.
Below her crown, a long, coal black, and gnarled horn protruded out of her forehead. Chrysalis' eyes shown a dark turquoise color. However more then her eye color was displayed tonight, green wisps of magic poured out from them. She roared her frustrations to the heavens, her latest failure flashed into her mind. Despite all her calculations and anticipations, those wretched ponies always seemed to defeat her.
As her anguish scream dissipated into the night, she lowered her head and continued into the Everfree Forest. Her form slowly disappeared into its inky darkness. The sun rose high over the town of Ponyville, signaling the start of a new day. Soon ponies began to leave their homes, ready to go about their daily lives. Shops opening their doors, welcoming potential costumers to enter and browse around.
Within a few hours, Ponyville was bustling with ponies. Although a small town, it seemed to contain the hustle of a big city. Food vendors lined the streets as they cited their sales pitch for all to hear. Clothing shops hurried to change their displays to the latest trend. Confectioners were busy lining shelves with freshly prepared sweets of all variations. Delicious smells bellowed out of the chimney as the bakers concocted their baked treats.
It was a beautiful day full of birds chirping and flowers parading their bright colors. Meanwhile deep in the Everfree Forest, Chrysalis slowly opened her eyes. Sleepily, she rose and began to stretch her legs and rubbed her eyes. Hoping from the branch that had served as her roost, she landed on the ground, leaving hoof imprints in the process.
A chorus of growls echoed from the shadows. A trio of timber wolves leaped out to surround her. They must have been waiting all night for a chance to ambush her. A sinister smile crept across her face, revealing a pair of sharp fangs among her teeth. Chrysalis snarked, " In stead of growling, you should be grovelling for mercy !"
She dashed toward the center wolf, the others tried to intercept with a pincer attack. In one swift motion, the center wolf received a quick horn to the heart. In a blur of speed, she spun to face the wolf on her right. The opposite wolf, which was now behind Chrysalis, got a hoof to the throat with enough force to drop him cold.
Watching his fellow wolves get dispatched with such ease, gave the remaining wolf a slight pause. Returning her rear hoof to the ground, she stared daggers at the last timber wolf, who quickly leaped at her. Unfazed, she gave a sigh, disappointed at the beast's single mindedness. Without indication, Chrysalis gave a backhoof to the wolf's face.
Its body began to lose its structural integrity at the sheer force of the blow. Pieces of wood soared through the air, passing by her harmlessly. " Y ou either have no intelligence or lack the mentality to use i t, " chided Chrysalis before strolling away.
After several minutes of trotting, Chrysalis came to the edge of the forest. Outstretched before her was a green field as far as she could see. A long dirt road was the only variation from the green grass. The road traveled beyond the horizons, to where she didn't care. Chrysalis narrowed her eyes with interest when she spotted an earthpony pulling a wagon.
Mmm, what a delightful snack she thought, as she morphed into a rabbit and hopped toward the pony. As she drew closer to her target, she could make out the pony's features. This mare had a blue coat, a dark magenta mane and tail, her cutie mark appeared to be a bow with several arrows laying across it.
The strange pony, spotting the rabbit, stopped to admire the woodland creature. Chrysalis bounced ever closer to her observer, savoring the meal yet to come. Now only several feet separated them, the strange pony sat on her haunches and gently cooed at the bunny. Now within a hooves reach, the rabbit leaped up at the mare.
The mare's once happy smile suddenly turned to fright as the airborne bunny morphed into a hissing Chrysalis. The stranger couldn't even scream, fangs crushing her throat, she could feel the warmth of her body draining away. Chrysalis savored every drop of love her magic extracted, it felt like a warm blanket.
Several moments passed before Chrysalis released its throat, completely drained, the limp mare plopped to the ground. Licking her lips, her hunger partially satisfied, she thought of what to do with the expired pony. Inspiration struck, wrapping the mare's tail with her magic. Those brainless wolves will serve nicely, she thought, dragging the body toward the forest.
A couple of feet in, she flung the body further in before leaving. Her ears perked up, when she heard several howls. The wolves had already detected the offering and quickened their pace. Returning to the wagon, Chrysalis once again morphed but this time she took on the appearance of the mare she just fed upon.
After a quick glance she decided that her disguise was acceptable except for a few changes. As quick as a thought, a blue horn appeared from the center of her brow. The next adjustment was her cutie mark, a bow and arrow was far beneath a queen. She thought a little while for a cutie mark that would be more suitable for royalty.
Thinking for a while, she decided, the bow and arrows disappeared and a Bass Clef appeared instead. There she thought with a satisfied huff, next was to see what the wagon held. Several minutes later, a disgruntled Chrysalis poked her head back out through the doorway.
"Why was this pony carrying such useless junk," Chrysalis growled to herself. The only half decent thing was a bed but even that was to small to be comfortable. After deciding which way she would travel, Chrysalis begrudgingly hitched up to the wagon and set off down the road.
Usually she wouldn't lower herself to such a demeaning task. However even a queen must get her hooves dirty on occasion. Besides the wagon would offer a place to rest, plot, and would solidify her cover as a traveling pony. Long hours of trotting down the road, nothing to do but think and the occasional rest. Chrysalis used this time to come up with a name and cover story. Several more hours of endless trotting until she finally climbed a hill to peer out over a small town in the distance.
As she trotted closer, Chrysalis recognized the town as Ponyville. " How fortuitous, this town would make for an excellent meal , " she chuckled as she continued onward. The sun was high in the sky when she reached the outskirts.
Thoughts of Celestia's prized student and her band of dopes, helpless and drained danced in her mind. leaving her wagon on the outskirts, Chrysalis trotted into town. Her scouting instincts immediately engaged, searching for anything that could give her an advantage.
Several ponies greeted her with a smile as they passed her on the street. These fools have no idea what's in store fo... her thoughts were interrupted by a soothing, melodic sound. Searching for the hypnotic sound, Chrysalis saw that she was standing in front of the local theater. Drawn inside, like a moth to the flame, she found herself staring down at a solitary pony on stage.
Numerous benches stretched out in a descending semi-circle toward the center where the stage was located. On that stage was a lone pony holding a large instrument in their hooves. Before she could proceed down the stairs, a strange hoof tapped her shoulder.
Muscles jerking tight as a startled Chrysalis withheld the urge to pulverize whoever touched her. Instead she slowly turned her head to stare at an off white unicorn mare. This unicorn had a very pale yellow coat, a pair of black framed shades with dark violet lens. Her cutie mark were two connected eighth notes but her mane and tail was quite unusual.
A blue-light blue striped ensemble, the unicorn introduced herself as Vinyl Scratch. "Sonorous," Chrysalis stated, pushing Vinyl's hoof off her shoulder. Returning her gaze to the pony on the stage, Vinyl felt slightly dejected at her cold attitude.
Taking a deep breath, she recomposed herself, and attempted to make conversation. "Do you like classical music, it's ok but not my favorite," Vinyl spoke halfheartedly. There was no response from Sonorous but her ear turned to listen, so Vinyl decided to continue talking. "It's sorta memorizing though , if the musician knows how to play the instrument ," Vinyl stuttered as she felt her cheeks take on a slight blush.
Sonorous turned to glare at Vinyl, who bent her head down to hide her embarrassment, softly pawing at the floor. " Do y ou know that pony ? " Sonorous asked inquisitively. Vinyl's pawing increased, a smile formed on Sonorous mouth at the silent answer.
Sonorous' horn began to glow a deep emerald green. Don't worry It'll only be a taste, she thought to herself. Sonorous could smell love in the air and it seemed to be emanating from Vinyl. Sonorous, careful not to absorb to much, extracted a small amount of love, wanting to sample its vintage.
Vinyl seemed unaffected from being fed upon, "Who's the pony on stage," Sonorous inquired. As if snapping out of a dream, Vinyl raised her head to look at her. "I'm guessing that you must be new to town Sonorous," Vinyl spoke, ignoring the question.
Sonorous' ears flicked wildly, the music had begun to fade away. The once plesant music had ceased, silence now filled the theater. The pony on stage had stopped and began packing their instrument. Sonorous started to leave but was blocked by Vinyl. Annoyance clearly written on Vinyl's face as she spoke. "I've tried to be patient but I've had it with your attitude," Vinyl growled, turning on a hoof, smacking Sonorous in the face with her tail in the process.
Fighting the urge of ripping Vinyl's tail off, Sonorous thought quickly. She needed to remain inconspicuous, as appalling as it was, she would have to make amends. Thinking quickly, she remembered that griffons were blunt and not much on pleasantries.
"My apologies Vinyl," Sonorous feinted sincerity, "I just left from Griffonstone and haven't reacquainted myself with proper mannerisms." Vinyl spun around in the doorway and stared at Sonorous. Tension filled the air, Vinyl appeared as if trying to decide if she should believe her or not.
Finally Vinyl broke the silence, "Why would you go to Griffonstone?" "I'm just a traveling m instrel, exploring all of E questria," Sonorous replied. Vinyl bobbed her head, as if in thought about what to say next. After a few moments she gave a quick wave of her hoof motioning Sonorous to follow her.
Vinyl departed the theater with a reluctant Sonorous trotting behind. "Where are we going," Sonorous asked as she caught up with Vinyl. Glancing back but saying nothing, continued to trot on to their mysterious destination.
Sonorous was starting to get very agitated now. Playing the nice mare was barely tolerable but now she was reduced to following a commoner.
Careful not to burst into a torrent of rage, Sonorous forced herself to be calm. Deciding to humor the mare and if it turned out to be a waste of time, she'd regret it. "We're here," Vinyl chirped as she pointed a hoof to Sugarcube Corner.
Sonorous slightly twisting her head sideways in confusion.
Noticing this, Vinyl trotted up the stairs and opened the door for her. At least she knew how to be proper, when she wanted to, Sonorous thought. Once inside, a pink mare with three balloons for a cutie mark, bounced up to them. "Hi Pinkie Pie," Vinyl greeted as she started toward the corner booth, followed by Sonorous, Pinkie Pie bringing up the rear.
Her cutie mark had two balloons that was blue with a yellow string attached. The center balloon was yellow with a blue string attached. Her mane and tail was untamed, riddled with wild curls and puffiness that would make a stylist fume in frustration. Images of her hooves around the pink pony's neck danced wildly in Sonorous' mind. However Pinkie Pie's high pitched voice shattered her daydream when they reached the corner booth.
They looked through the menus that were at the table, while Pinkie waited on their dinner order. After a while Vinyl sat down the menu and looked at Pinkie. "I'll have a couple of dandelion haywiches and some cider," Vinyl politely stated. Pinkie Pie nodded before turning to Sonorous, waiting patiently for her request.
"I'll just have some cider , " Sonorous replied offhandedly as she placed the menu down.
"Okie dokie lokie," Pinkie Pie replied in a sing song as she bounced away, her mane and tail flaring into the air with each bounce. Once Pinkie Pie was out of ear shot, Sonorous let out an exasperating sigh. Surprised by this reaction, Vinyl inquired as to what was the matter.
Some days you're just not in a happy-go-lucky mood, was the only answer Vinyl got. Vinyl was about to reply when the bell above the door jingled. Vinyl waved a hoof in the air, Sonorous turned in her seat to see what had caught Vinyl's attention. There stood a gray mare, with adark gray mane, a white collar with a pink bow rested around her neck.
The mare looked around Sugarcube Corner, after spotting them, she trotted toward the corner booth. As she approached the table, her tail was discovered to be dark gray as well. Her cutie mark was a pink Treble Clef, this gray/gray variant pony looked quiet boring, with only a few dashes of color to offset it all.
The mare sat down next to Vinyl and was about to speak but paused when she noticed Sonorous. "Oh, forgive my rudeness but I don't think I've had the pleasure," The mare apologized in a dignified voice. Hmm, Sonorous thought, two mares in the same day that can be proper.
Sonorous spoke in the most cheerful voice she could muster, remembering how offended Vinyl became when she acted cold."My name is Sonorous, nice to meet you.." Sonorous trailed off. " Octavia Melody," the mare finished with a slight bow.
An awkward silence began to settle, making Octavia fidget with discomfort. She quickly stated that she hadn't seen Sonorous around before. Just arrived, was the only response she received. Octavia leaned close to Vinyl and started talking quietly. Sonorous, bored, started to hum the melody she had heard in the theater. Recognizing the tune, Octavia asked where she'd had heard it from.
Before she could reply, Pinkie Pie returned with their order balanced on her head. By some miracle, the refreshments remained upright on the platter, despite her bouncing. Sliding the platter off her fluffy head and onto the table, she started to sort out who had what food.
Before trotting off, she glanced at Octavia, waiting to see if she wanted to order something as well. Octavia requested a cider, to which Pinkie nodded in acknowledgment before bounding off. Octavia returned her gaze back to Sonorous, again waiting for her reply.
Sonorous spoke of how she heard the music from the theater. Octavia noticed that Vinyl was staring out the window and being unusually quiet. Which was quite odd for the outspoken mare. Shaking it off, she returned her full attention back to Sonorous.
Realizing that even if she had to wait to assume that pony's identity and progress her plans. She could at least learn more about her target. "I don't really know much more about that pony except it seemed like they was holding a large instrument," Sonorous explained. A blush formed on Octavia's cheeks, realizing it was her performance that had caught Sonorous' attention.
