Dreaming of Harmony

My body hit the floor with such force it woke up my dog sleeping across the room. He jumped up and barked at some invisible intruder. Scanning the room, he found it was me. He looked at me with his black and golden eyes as if to say, "What's the big idead waking me up with your clumsiness?" The thought fit perfectly with his cocked head. I let out a soft chuckle and he came toward me. I let out my foreleg and brushed it along his black, grey, and white fur.

His name was Dreamcatcher. We found him after a dragon attacked our village... (wait, I should fill you in on his homeland before I get into the story. Moonrite lives in the kingdom of Dragonfall. It is a very different, and hostile land for outsiders. Dragons fly free in the mountains that pretty much cover all of the landscape. The only places without mountians are the plains that stretch from the fjord, and Redlum's valley. Redlum's valley takes the better part of a day to pass, and is reltively flat. It's really more of a praire than a valley, but I guess that valley sounds better. Anyways, Redlum is a dragon. Some say he's even older that the Princesses themselves, and that he saw the very first equines walk these lands with his very own eyes. With Redlum being as old and wise as he is, he became the king of dragons. He erected his kingdom in the praire, or valley as most ponyfolk call it. Dragons thrive in this legendary valley, and on occasion they come from the valley to terrorize the residences in their land, taking their diamonds, jewels, gemstones, and on rare instances... ponies.)

The dragon that attacked our village killed my... I mean our father, in the raid. Our mother died during child birth. Our father was a guard that helped defend our village from threats, just like the one that killed him. The other guards slayed the foul beast and beheaded it. They put the head in the middle of town to recognize the brave stallions that gave their lives defending the village.

My sister and I were crushed and heartbroken from the tradegy bestowed upon us. We stayed for a speech that was hastely put together by the mayor, and took our chairs in the feast that followed. On our slow, dark way back home we found a puppy, all alone in the middle of the road, whimpering. The pup had been burnt from the dragon. My sister nearly broke down in the middle of the street. She galloped closer to the poor baby and magically tended to his wounds (my sister always was a natural at healing spells) and wrapped him in her cloak. She nestled him in the warmth of her saddle bag that was full of wool and feathers the guards and grieving townsfolk donated to us. From that day on we cared for that dog and loved it, and it loved us.

All of our fear and depression left us that day and never did dare to come back. Our nightmares also stopped! For the first time in months, we dreamed of harmony! So we named our beautiful dog, Dreamcatcher. Me and my sister had the same dream that night. Six mares, all wearing jewelery that matched their cutie mark. One of them stuck out in my head, a pegasus, with a rainbow mane and ruby red eyes.

The dream started with me and sister in a dark room, alone. We just glanced at each other. We were both bloodied and bruised, and much older, about the age we are now (we were fillies when we had the dream after all). The darkness soon evaporated and the room was being invaded by a rainbow!

"Aaaaaaaagh!" I heard my sister scream from across the cottage! The thought of the dream was long gone as I leaped up and rushed out of my bedroom door. I ran down the hall and stopped at my sister's door. I took a deep breath.

"I'm here, don't worry!" I yelled.

I bucked the door down. She was lying in her bed, wrapped in sweaty blankets and gasping for air.

She leaned toward me.

"We have to leave! Now!"
