Jack Patrick: The Secret World of Mesozoica
Chapter 2
Previous ChapterNext ChapterIt is 2:45 in the afternoon, and many hours after Jack’s time in biology class.
The school bell rings throughout the hall once more, and while it does, Jack is at his locker. He had a lot of homework, as well as a lot of studying, and, pretty much, he hated it just like any other school attendee would.
He pulls out his PE bag, and an Algebra book out of his locker. Believing that no one else is around, he digs into his backpack to pull out something that he especially wants to bring to his eyepoint: a stuffed Twilight Sparkle doll he got from Toys R Us when he was ten.
He looks at her as if she’s the best thing he ever had.
I wish you would come here to help me with my homework, Twilight. Jack thought, We have so much fun together.
Jack looks around to make sure no one sees him with his plushie before he stuffs it/her back into his backpack. He closes his locker, making sure the combination of the lock is perfectly in place and walks down the hallway. The hallway is empty, and for anyone that would be a great thing, but, Jack has to be cautious because around every corner, a bully could pounce out at any minute.
He sighs, thinking that he’s the only one here. He approaches the front door, opens it, and walks outside, before shutting the door behind him.
“Well, well...” a voice suddenly says from behind.
Turning around, Jack suddenly sees three bullies appear from behind the dumpster. The two henchmen are Chuck, who has black hair, a stubble beard, and wears a grey cap, white sleeveshirt and light blue jeans, and Jeff, who is Asian with a black haircut, and wears a black T-shirt and grey sweatpants. The alpha is Henry, who is tall, has blonde gelled hair, and wears a red T-shirt and blue ripped jeans.
"Hey, small fry." Henry says, "Did you miss us?"
Jack didn't say anything because he's grown nervous at the sight of those three guys.
"Look at him. I bet he’s ready to have his mother tuck him in for the night." Chuck teases.
"Good one, Chuck,” Henry says.
Suddenly, someone behind him grabs Jack's backpack. Jack turns back to see Jeff, who pulled his stuffed Twilight Sparkle out of his backpack.
"Ooo hoo hoo. What have we here?” Jeff says with fascination.
“Hey, that’s mine,” Jack says, before suddenly covering his mouth because of what he just said.
“Really? I didn’t know you liked a show full of technicolor horses,” Jeff teases, “Hey, Henry. Jack's got his cute little Twilight Sparky." Jeff teases.
"Give it back!" Jack shouts.
Jack runs to get his stuffed pony, but Jeff tosses her to Chuck.
"What's the matter? Do you want her as a friend?" Chuck teases.
"That's mine!" Jack runs over to Chuck.
"Hey, Henry. Catch." He tosses the stuffed Twilight Sparkle to Henry.
"You better come and get it." Henry taunts.
Jack runs over to Henry to get his toy back.
Henry tosses the stuffed toy to Chuck. "Too slow.”
Chuck catches the toy before he tosses Twilight to Jeff.
Jeff catches it, but then, he throws Twilight again. "Oops."
Jack's stuffed toy lands into the dumpster.
"NO!" Jack yelps as he runs over to the dumpster.
When he makes it there, he tries to grab Twilight.
Henry walks over to Jack. "Why don't you get a closer look?" Henry shoves Jack into the dumpster. "You're welcome, loser." He slams the dumpster lid.
Knowing that he’s alone again, Jack sighs in defeat. He still has his Twilight plushie, but he's unlucky that he’s gotten bullied... again. He picks up his plushie and holds her close, glad that he at least didn’t lose her forever.
But, as he continues to hold onto the toy tightly, something all of a sudden catches his eye: some kind of object, trapped under a box.
He reaches for the box above it and moves it out of the way. And to his surprise, he finds...an old book with a T-Rex skull icon on the cover.
"Does that look interesting to you, Twilight?" Jack says to his toy.
He nods Twilight plushie's head, and after doing so, he reaches for the book and grabs it, holding it to where he could see it up close.
"I wonder why someone would throw this away?” he asks his plushie.
Shortly after, the dumpster lid opens, the sunlight outside shining in as it does.
Jack sighs, while landing his head on the garbage bag hoping that what he’s laying his face on is a bag full of school stuff.
"Jack? Are you okay?" a girl’s voice asks.
Jack perks his head up because right away, he recognizes that voice. He glances up to see Emily holding the dumpster lid opens while outside.
Jack smiles. "Not really. But, I’m much better since you showed up."
Emily held out her right hand. "Let me help you."
Without hesitation, Jack grabs Emily’s hand, and she pulls him out of the dumpster. Finally, she manages to get him all the way out of the dumpster to where he’s standing on his feet again, and the two look at each other eye to eye for a moment.
"Henry jumped you again, didn’t he?" Emily asks.
"Yeah." he nods sadly.
Emily glances at Twilight Sparkle plushie. "Is that yours?"
Jack looks at the toy he's holding and he hides it behind his back. "Uh, nope."
"Jack, I saw you trying to grab your toy from the bullies."
He sighs, now knowing that the jig is up and that she knows. "Alright, it's mine." He says with some slight embarrassment.
"Are you a brony?" She asks with curiosity.
Jack nods and he shows his plushie. "She's now contaminated."
Emily reaches into her backpack and she pulls out her hand wipes. "Let me see your toy."
Jack hands Emily his stuffed Twilight, and she uses her hand wipes to wipe Twilight clean.
“It's okay if you're a brony,” Emily assures while cleaning the toy. “I know you’re being bullied because of being autistic, so, I can understand why you want to keep being a fan of the show a secret.”
Jack watches his crush cleaning his favorite pony. "Yeah."
"What's her name?"
"Twilight Sparkle. She's my favorite pony."
"I'm not really an MLP fan, but I don't care,” She tells him.
"I have a best friend named Will. He’s a brony too."
"That's good." Emily's done cleaning Twilight. "Now she's Twilight Sparkly clean."
Jack laughs. “Good one.”
Emily hands the toy to Jack, then catches sight of the dinosaur book Jack is holding. "Did you find that dinosaur book at the dumpster?"
"Sorry. I can't help it." Jack says sheepishly. "Can you clean it for me?"
"Sure."
Jack hands Emily the book and she wipes the covers.
Jack stuffs Twilight into his backpack.
"Why do you keep Twilight with you?" Emily asks.
"Twilight's a smart pony and she always helps me with my studies."
"You know Twilight's just a toy, right?"
"Yeah. I do.”
Emily finishes wiping the book and she hands it over to Jack. "Here you go."
"Thanks." He stuffs the new book into his backpack.
"I'll see you tomorrow, and, uh...tomorrow after school...” She says with a slight blush. “Would you like to come over to my house for a visit?”
“Uh...okay." He laughs nervously while blushing.
"Great. I'll see you tomorrow." Emily walks away.
Jack waves. "Bye."
As Jack watches Emily leave, he literally couldn’t help but note how beautiful she looks to him. The sun giving her hair radiance to his point of view.
His thoughts about Emily are quickly interrupted by the sound of a car horn honking. Turning to the source, he finds his mom’s car pulling up in front of the school and he quickly walks over to the car.
When Jack reaches the car, he opens the backseat door and throws his backpack inside it before shutting it. Jack open the shotgun door, and he sits in it, his mother looking at him to greet him.
"Hey, Jack, how's school going?" Mom asks.
Jack sighs as he closes the door. "Brutal."
His mother’s smile turns upside down upon hearing that. "Let me guess. You got bullied again." She guesses.
"Yep.” He responds. “By Henry and his gang of lackeys.”
Mom smells Jack's coat before she pulls back and focuses her attention at the front of the car.
“You need to take a shower, you know that?” She says to him.
"I will when we get home." He responds.
Mom drives off with Jack to his house, the latter looking out the window as everything passes by, finding nothing else to do at the moment.
In the caves of Canterlot Mountain, the Mane 6, Starlight, and Spike explore the cavern while Twilight, leading the group, lights her horn. Her magic shining throughout the cavern like a lantern. Rarity and Starlight also had their horns lighting the way.
"Are you sure this is the location the map wanted us to come to?" Fluttershy asks. "It's so dark and creepy in here."
"Stay strong, Fluttershy." Twilight replies. "I know where I'm going."
"Twilight, you know I don't like being in dirty caves, right?” Rarity asks, her horn also lighting the way.
“Well, if you don’t like caves, then, why do you even go inside the ones in Ponyville so much?” Applejack asks.
“Applejack, you know as well as I do that that is a completely different matter,” Rarity points out. “The reason I go to the caves in Ponyville is to look for gems and other kinds of minerals. If this cave had any, I would certainly come here more.”
“Right. Ah think Ah get yer point.” Applejack understands.
Starlight meanwhile can’t help but look around this cave as if something could happen. She knows that neither she or her friends have never been to this cave before, and if not too careful, the group could very well get separated and lost.
"Too bad Maud isn’t here. She could probably navigate this place with her eyes closed.” Starlight says.
"Maud has never been here before, silly,” Pinkie says.
“How do you know?” Starlight asks curiously.
“Oh, well, she often keeps track of what caves she’s explored before in a journal. She showed that to me herself, and really, this place hasn’t been listed.” Pinkie explains.
After processing the entire explanation, Starlight couldn’t stop herself from feeling amazed by it. “Oh,” she says with amazement.
"Guys, we have to stay focused." Twilight says, "There's no telling what we’ll find in this place."
"I don't know, Twilight." Spike says, "What if this is all some trap?”
"There won’t be a trap as long as we stick together," Rainbow says to Spike assuringly, “Besides, the map doesn’t call us just for us to suddenly get tackled by somepony.”
"And, uh, Twilight? You said something about 'Mesozoica'. What is that, exactly?" Starlight asks,
"I don't know, Starlight. I've never heard of that word before." Twilight replies.
"Hmmm...Mesozoica...” Pinkie thinks to herself, before saying to her friends. “Anyone get the feeling that it sounds like the name of a place or parallel world?” She suddenly gasps and says with excitement, “OR PERHAPS EVEN A HOLIDAY OR PARTY?!”
"Pinkie, darling. I know that the word sounds peculiar, but, let’s not jump to conclusions just yet.” Rarity says with a roll of her eyes.
Pinkie thinks over what Rarity says to her. “Well, okay then. It was only a guess anyway,” She agrees. “Personally, I definitely hope the map gave us an invitation to a party or holiday.”
While they're exploring, they have no idea that they are being followed. From the shadows, two creatures with clear blue eyes are watching them, the darkness of the cavern perfectly concealing them. They head throughout the cave to continually follow the heroes closely.
Back with the gang, they continue to explore, unaware of the danger with them. Suddenly, they come across something that makes them gasp at the sight of it: a large chamber, big enough to contain fifty ponies.
"Wow! Look at this place." Spike says in wonder, “It’s so big!”
Pinkie is also intrigued by this unexpected room when suddenly, another thing catches her eye: cave drawings on the walls.
She hops on over to take a look at the ones on the left side of the wall. She sees that they are of strange tailed creatures: all of the creatures shown are either bipedal (two-legged) or quadrupedal (four-legged), although each of them aren’t without their differences. Some have long necks; some have spikes; some have horns; some have armor; some have feathers; and some have wings too.
“Hmmmmm...intriguing.” she says, before putting a detective hat on and getting out a magnifying glass to look even closer.
Fluttershy comes over to see what Pinkie is looking at.
“It looks like these pictures are of animals we’ve never seen before,” Fluttershy says with astonishment. “Not even in Equestria.”
Starlight and the others join the two. "Or maybe they’re ancient species that have been here long before us." Starlight says, feeling astounded as well.
As they all continue to look at the cave drawings, Rainbow suddenly sees a picture of something that completely stands out: a drawing of a hoop. “Hey, Twi,” she says. “What do ya suppose this is?”
Twilight catches sight of what Rainbow is looking at. "It looks like some kind of...ring," Twilight says, looking closely at it.
“A ring? But, that doesn’t make sense! What could it possibly have anything to do with...” Rarity asks, then suddenly comes to a thought, “Unless...Twilight, do you suppose the ring could be magic?”
"I don't know, Rarity," Twilight says. “I haven’t even known about all of this until today.”
"Well, it’s gotta be at least," Applejack says, before pointing towards the animals on the wall. “Because somethin’ tells me that it must have somethin’ to do with these here critters.”
“I think you’re right, Applejack,” Twilight agrees, “But, how will we know for sure?”
“Well, we could start by checking out the ring on that pedestal over there.” Spike points out. “I think it’s the same one on here.
The ponies turn their attention to what Spike is pointing at, and find, to their surprise, that Spike is right. Up against the wall, and sitting on a pedestal with a velvet cushion on top, sits the ring, contained inside of a glass container to protect it. The ponies are awestruck by it.
“Now how the hay could we have not noticed that before?” Applejack asks.
All the other ponies and dragon can do is shrug in response.
So, without any second thought, they walk right over to the pedestal. Once they approach it, they get a closer look at the ring to see that it’s made out of a mix of pure gold and bronze, with carvings of triangles on it in a repeating pattern of right side up and upside down, and a dot at the center of each.
The only obstacle in their way at the moment is the glass container casing the ring, and it looked to be accompanied by a set of ancient buttons, meaning that it’s locked by a code. Twilight takes a closer look at it just to be sure.
“It looks like it’s locked by an ancient code,” Twilight confirms. “It may take a while to figure out, but with some translations and deducting, I’m sure that-“
“Or we can use this,” Pinkie says out of nowhere.
Seeing what Pinkie is talking about, everyone finds Pinkie holding a large diamond.
“Where did you get that?” Twilight asks.
“Oh, I found it while we were here,” She explains, before handing Twilight the diamond.
“Well, in whatever case, this is a great idea, Pinkie," Rarity points out. “As an expert in minerals, I can definitely tell you that diamonds can cut through a number of objects. Including glass.”
“I know right.”
So, with a plan now set, and a way for them to get the glass container open, Twilight uses the diamond to make a circular hole. With a quick and precise encircling, the container is opened like a spy would do with a window, Rarity catching the now fallen glass before it could ever hit the ground and break.
With the use of her levitation, she gives the diamond back to Pinkie, the latter whom puts the diamond in her poofy mane. Then, Twilight directs her attention to where the ring is sitting and uses her magic to levitate it off of the pillow.
She brings it closer to her face as if it is the most significant thing she has ever seen before finally, she puts it down on the ground.
“Stand back," she tells everyone else.
The ponies and dragon back away from Twilight as she tries to concentrate on using her magic. She fires a magic beam at the ring and then...it glows purple, before creating a vortex appearing in the air, the light of it brightly shining throughout the room.
"Whoa!" They say in wonder.
From the window of the vortex, they could see various objects and events appearing right before them. The first one that they see for instance is a head of a man made of stone; another that they see a very realistic cheetah chasing down an ostrich; and another is a group of dogfighting fighter planes.
But, their moment of captivation is not to last long...
Suddenly, a group of five strange pony-like arthropods, with blue beetle-like shells, wasp-like wings, horns on top of their heads, two long saber-like fangs, blue pupil-less eyes with a nictitating membrane, a snake-like tongue, and holes on each leg, appear from the darkness and surround Twilight and the gang.
"Oh no! Changelings!" Spike cries.
"I thought they all transformed to no longer forcefully feed on love!” Twilight exclaims.
In defense, she tries to use her magic against them, blasting one of them back to make a gap as a getaway. For a moment, it seems like it’s going to work, but instead, the changeling is strong enough to stay put. He grins at her gloatingly.
“What the...?" Twilight becomes wide-eyed with shock.
An evil cackle suddenly echoes throughout the room.
"Well, well, well, look what we have here." Someone with a voice of an evil women says from behind them,
An Alicorn-like arthropod, that looks like the other Changelings, but with green reptilian eyes, green-blue hair, long twisted horn, short fangs, and a light green beetle-like shell, appears from the darkness behind Twilight and her gang.
"Queen Chrysalis?!” Twilight gasps.
"That's right, Twilight Sparkle," Chrysalis smirks. "It’s been a while since I abducted you and your friends, and even a longer while since the wedding.”
Again, Twilight tries to make an escape by blasting Chrysalis. However, just like her minion, Twilight’s magic doesn’t even touch her.
“What’s the matter? You can't use magic when I'm wearing this?” She taps her necklace with a rock attached to it.
Twilight and the others are shocked upon finding this.
"That’s some rock leftover from her throne." Starlight whispers to Twilight.
"What are ya’ll up to, ya overgrown cockroach?" Applejack glares at the Changeling Queen.
Chrysalis chuckles, “Quite simple really, my dear. I want that book that you’re tracking down. And when I jump through that portal to retrieve it, I will use it to travel to Mesozoica!”
“You know of it?” Twilight asks with a raised eyebrow.
“Yes. It is another place quite like ours and the ones you are seeing before you, but with one difference...it has something I want. And when I get my hooves on it, I will use it to rule Equestria! And after that...the world!”
Twilight looks back on the portal behind them. She realizes that Chrysalis has been smart enough to follow them, but not smart enough to plan ahead on stopping them from entering the portal. Turning back to Chrysalis, she knows what she and her friends need to do...
"Not this time, Chrysalis!" Twilight smirks. “Come on, you guys!”
Twilight and the gang quickly turn to the portal and run towards it.
"Get them!" Chrysalis shouts to her workers.
A couple of changelings immediately try to apprehend them from the left and right, but with one quick zoom and hit of the forehoof, Rainbow knocks down the one coming to their left. Applejack also jumps into the air towards the one on the right and uses her hind legs to buck the Changeling up against the wall.
Before more of the Changelings could try to apprehend the Mane 6, Spike, and Starlight, however, our heroes disappear into the portal.
Chrysalis, in anger, stomps on the ground. "You three! Don’t just stand there, after them! And don't come back until you bring them to me!"
The three Changelings ordered to go after them run straight to the portal jump through the portal.
Meanwhile, Twilight and the others are all falling through a swirling tunnel, screaming as they do while also passing windows that could give you a glance to objects and events on the other world the book is being tracked on, such as a hurricane in New York; one with a group of religious people in church praying; one with a great white shark snatching a seal; one with a space shuttle blasting off from the launchpad; and one with a fossilized skull of an animal, with sharp thick teeth, five holes and a narrow snout, but it looks nothing anypony or dragon has ever seen.
At the end of the tunnel, a large white light suddenly makes itself known, meaning that they must be coming to a stop in a world that isn’t their own.
“Everyone, hold on!” Twilight shouts.
They all hold on tightly to each other as they approach the light, until finally...they emerge out of the end of the portal, and land into a forest, belly first and piled on top of each other, Twilight, of course, being on the very bottom.
With no problem, she raises her head up.
“Is everyone alright?” Twilight asks.
Everyone says things like “Yeah”, “I’m good”, and “Perfectly fine”, the only exceptions being Applejack and Spike.
“All good, Twi.” Applejack says.
“Not a scale damaged,” Spike says.
And with that, everyone gets off of each other and back on their feet.
Twilight stands up and looks around. The world around her and her friends looks really strange. Unlike theirs, everything seems...so much more 3-D than their world, unlike they who look like cartoon characters out of the picture.
“Where in Equestria are we?" Applejack asks as she and the others look around too.
"This place doesn't look like Equestria to me," Twilight says. "Everything looks so...I don’t even know how to describe it. The plants and animals look more realistic...”
"But, It looks like we're not as realistic as this place.” Rainbow finishes for her.
"Yeah."
"So, why are we here?" Starlight asks.
"I don't know, Starlight." Twilight sighs, "We’re probably going to be stuck in this world for a while consider we don’t know how to go home yet."
"What about the ring?" Pinkie says, pointing her hoof on the ground.
Everypony looks at the ground, directing their attention to see Pinkie’s hoof showing the ring, a blinking golden light going off as it sat there.
Twilight tries to levitate the ring, but nothing happens. "Oh no! My magic isn’t working!"
Rainbow tries to use her flight, but the balance and weight of her body cause her to fall. "What happened to my flight?"
"We're not in Equestria anymore." Starlight says. "That's why it's hard for the Pegasi to fly and magic to work."
“Let me help you, Twilight.” Spike offers.
So, Spike grabs the ring with his claws, and, finding that Twilight would have a lot me assurance if she’s the one carrying the ring, he climbs up onto her back, and puts the ring on her horn, the ring itself getting nestled to where it’s at the very bottom, and inside her mane. Spike hops off afterwards.
“Whatever shall we do now?” Rarity asks with slight panic.
“Well, we don't have to stay here and do nothing." Twilight says, "We have to find that book before Chrysalis gets it."
Suddenly, the three Changelings appear from the flashing lights, and they land feet first on the ground. Seeing the heroes in front of them, they bare their teeth with grins of maliciousness.
"RUN!" Twilight yells.
They turn and run through the forest, the Changelings chasing after them like a predator would its prey. And with that, they run into a world completely unknown to any of them.
