Cards of fate
Deiknumena, what is shown
Load Full StoryNext ChapterOcellus continued to study the box in front of her. Using her magic to levitate a nearby brush. She gently swept the dirt off the box and onto her desk. Which she then swept off into a nearby trash can. The box itself was small and it looked to be made out of a strange metal. Taking the brush in her magical hold; she removed more dirt. She saw that the box was decorated with only two large red gems. Possibly, whatever was kept inside it was very important to whatever or whoever owned the box before. She then set her brush down and with her magic. She gently opened the box; sending a large amount of dust flying into the air. She coughed a little after inhaling a little bit of the dust. Eventually she managed to get the lid off. She then looked inside the box and inside she saw another, smaller, box.
“Huh?” She asked herself while using her magic to gently lift the box up and out.
Placing the smaller box on her desk; she took notice that it was a little cleaner that the box it was kept in. The box also had strange symbols drawn on it. Symbols, that she did not recognize. She eventually saw a way to open the box. Once again she used her magic to open the box. Gently, she emptied the box. And, from the box fell a deck of cards. To, say she was confused was an understatement. Who would go to that much for a deck of cards. She looked into the box again and saw a small folded up piece of paper. She picked it up and unfolded the paper. On the inside of the paper was a single sentence. Written in a language she could read.
“Do not trust Jinai he is not your friend or your enemy.” She read out loud as she set the paper down on her desk.
“Who's Jinai?” She asked herself before studying the deck of cards again.
As she studied the cards she saw each of them had a different image and number on them. As she shuffled through the cards; from the deck fell another piece of paper. She set the deck down and unfolded the piece of paper. Inside the paper looked to be instructions.
“Concentrate on the face of the one you wish to see. Then, in a clear voice say, “Reveal to me Deiknumena, Dromena, Legomena.”. On a paper fold the fate. Close your eyes and wait for the chosen's voice. Once the voice has been heard; unfold and see what is destined.” Upon reaching the end of the note. She was completely confused now. Before she was about to set the paper aside; she saw more writing on the back. But, by the way writing looked. This was written by something else not the owner of the deck. The words read, “Nothing is set in stone. Nothing is ever destined. Save, those you can!”. She then set the paper aside.
“What is this?” She asked herself.
She looked at the cards and then back at the paper. With a sigh she opened a drawer on her desk and pulled out her notebook. She then opened the book and tore out a piece of paper. Setting the paper in front of her; she began to think about who to try this on. After a few short seconds; she made up her mind and concentrated on the face of her teacher, Pinkie Pie. With a deep breath she said the words.
“Reveal to me,” She began, “Deiknumena,” Suddenly, the deck of cards flew in front of her. She screamed in surprise while she fell out of her chair. Looking up from the floor; she saw the deck hovering in the air. Then from the deck a card came and landed on the paper she had place on the desk. With a gulp she continued, “Dromena,” The deck shuffled itself and then another card came from the deck. Landing on top of the other card, “Legomena.” She finished. The deck shuffled and a third card came from the deck. Landing on the other two; she then got off the floor and looked at them. She then folded the paper over the cards. She then closed her eyes and waited for the voice.
“Help me.” The voice of her teacher begged.
She gasped as she turned around; although nopony was standing behind her. She swore that she heard her teacher whisper in her ear. She turned to look back at the paper and with a gulp; she unfolded it. What she saw almost made her heart stop. The cards were spread out and turned to reveal the images on them. Above the cards the words “Deiknumena, Dromena, and Legomena.” were written. Underneath Deiknumena was a card with two ponies drawn on it. One was a mare that rested on a cloud in front of a night sky. The mare appeared to be looking and reaching down. Below the mare was a stallion; that stood before a rising sun. He was looking up and reaching up towards the mare. In the middle of the card their hooves touched. She then looked below the card and read the words written bellow.
“VI, The lovers?” She asked before looking towards the card underneath Dromena.
The image in the middle card was hard to describe; it looked like a large sphere was sitting on a mare. She didn't know what to make of the image; until she looked into her desk mirror. She saw that the image was upside down. It was the image of a pregnant mare in the middle of a magnificent forest. She was looking down at her stomach; holding it with care while smiling happily. Around her two birds flew; one looked like a robin while the other looked like a dove. She then looked at the words below.
“Princess of Pentacles?” She only knew of four princesses. Was there another that she did not know about? No, in Equestria there were only four Princesses. One of the sun, One of the moon, One of love, and One of magic. She shook her head moved looked at the final card underneath Legomena. What she saw made her blood run cold.
The image of the card was a skeleton rising up from a grave. On its left was a owl with a glare. While in its right hand it carried a black as night scythe. Around the skeleton looked almost a burial ground.
“XIII,” She gulped as she read the next part, “D-D-Death.” She finished.
She then felt something pull on her; with a gasp she found herself in a hospital. She looked around; her breathing close to hyperventilating. She saw all her teachers standing around a bed. Where her teacher Pinkie pie lay. All of them were crying; while Pinkie just lay silently in bed. “I'm sorry.” She heard the words echo before she was returned to her room.
Ocellus was scared beyond belief. What was that she had just saw? Was that even real? Shaking her head and turning off her lamp. She quickly got herself ready for bed; knowing well sleep was not gonna come so easy for her tonight. Her body shook in fear; while her mind raced to try and make since at what she just experienced. She did eventually fall asleep. But, in her dreams stood a figure. A figure she could not tell what it was. The only thing she could see was its smile. A smile that could rival Chrysalis's wicked smiled.
The following morning started off like every other morning. She would meet up with her friends in the school courtyard. And, then they would head off to class. Of course the events from last night were still fresh in her mind. She checked her schedule and saw that Professor Pinkie's class was her third class of the day. Her first two were Fluttershy's- her favorite teacher- and Rarity's class. She still wonder what the cards meant. The Lovers? Princesses of Pentacles? Death? She was so focused on the cards; that she ended up bumping into Smolder.
“Sorry.” Ocellus quickly apologized.
“It's fine,” Smolder replied not caring about being run into, “Are you okay?” She asked.
“Yes,” Ocellus lied while she grinned nervously, “Just something on my mind.” She finished with a half-truth.
“What's wrong?” Asked Sandbar.
Ocellus had to come up with something quick, “Just worried,” She lied while she quickly though of a reason to be worried, “I misplaced some notes I took for Miss, Fluttershy's class.” She finished causing Gallus to laugh a little.
“Why are you worried about that?” He chuckled while they turned to look at him, “You're the top student in that class.” He finished earning himself a smack to the back of his head from Smolder.
Before they could carry on the conversation the bell for class rang. They school day continued on like normal. Fluttershy, had decided to bring a doe to class. She taught the students how to not startle the deer; how to befriend it. And, she even let each of them feed the deer. Which Ocellus really enjoyed. That was one of the many reasons she loved the class. When the class ended it was Rarity's class. Where they learned about dress designs and their meanings. She even brought in a dress she was asked to make for a wedding. The dress was a beautiful pearl white; with a floral design going up and down. She said that the mare had made a custom order; on the dress she wanted myrtle flowers added to it. She went on to explain to say that a myrtle flower symbolized love. But, it was not ordinary love. No, it stood for everlasting love and unity through marriage.
The bell rang and Ocellus knew what was up next. She was in no hurry to get to Pinkie pie's class. Slowly she walked into the classroom and took her seat. Trying her best not to think about the cards or the experience she had. The bell rang for the class to begin; as they were about to open their text books. The sound of a confetti cannon being shot rang out. Making them all jump and laugh as their teacher hopped onto her desk.
“Good morning everybody.” Pinkie pie said happily before jumping down from her desk.
“Morning, Miss Pie.” The students greeted.
“Hey!” Pinkie shouted playfully as she looked at her students, “Miss Pie is my mother.” She finished with a laugh. Before, turning to her chalkboard to start the lesson.
Class was half over when Ocellus had looked up to the clock. She wasn't as worried as she was before she came to class. She shook her head of the thought's that worried her. Finding it silly now; that she worried so much about some cards. She then looked back towards her teacher. Who was drawing a balloon alligator on the chalkboard.
“Next, we're gonna try a difficult,” She then released a sharp gasp as a wave of pain shot through her. She found herself gasping a little as she tried to steady herself. She looked up at her students and saw looks of worry on their faces. She tried to put on her best smile, “I'm okay,” She lied as another wave of pain shot from her stomach, “I'm okay.” She finished as she suddenly became light headed and dizzy.
It was then one of her students had screamed. She looked up and saw her students had horrified looks. Following her gaze to the floor below her; she saw that there was a large puddle of blood underneath her. It was then her hoof holding her up slipped. She then fell hitting her head on the table before hitting the floor.
Ocellus watched in horror as Silverstream flew out of the class to get Twilight. Her teacher had just started bleeding and had just fallen to the floor. As the students quickly got to her side; she heard her teacher whisper two words. Two words she had heard just hours ago.
“Help me.” Pinkie begged before she passed out.
The rest of the school day was filled with worry. The students wanted to know what had happened to their teacher. And, they wanted to know if she was going to be okay. Ocellus was left in shock; it had happened. Her teacher had just died in front of all of them. The cards had predicted her death. Instead of waiting for the school day to end. Ocellus, had transformed herself into a fly and hitched a rid to the hospital. Still as a fly she waited in one of the plants in the waiting room. Waiting, with all her teachers. Who had looks of worry and concern.
Almost an hour later a stallion doctor walked into the room. A tear fell from her eye; she knew what he was going to say next. But, he did not say it; instead he motioned for them to follow him. Ocellus immediately flew and landed on top of Fluttershy's head. She wondered where they were going; she got her answer when they reached a room and entered. Inside the room was her teacher, Pinkie. She was lying on her side and under here eyes were dried tear stains.
“What happened?” She asked herself.
“I'm sorry.” The doctor apologized as he started to make his way out of the room.
“Wait,” Rainbow dash had stopped him as they all looked towards him. While he looked back, “What was it?” She asked unaware that she was confusing Ocellus.
The doctor took in a deep breath and with a sigh he replied, “A little filly.” He answered before walking out of the room.
To say Ocellus was terrified would not describe the horror she felt. The cards had not showed the fate of her teacher. Rather, they had shown the fate of her unborn foal. And, she knew it was gonna happen. It was too much for her. She flew off of Fluttershy's head and had transformed back into her own form. Ignoring the call from her teachers as she ran out of the hospital and back to the school.
When she had reached her room she ran over and stared down at the cards. A large amount of anger surged through her body and into her horn. The anger then manifested itself into a burning spell. Which she cast on the deck of cards; hoping to burn them to ash. But, the cards did not burn. She then screamed and knocked them to the floor.
“Why?” She sniffled as she fell to the floor, “Why didn't I stop it?” She asked herself as the tears began to fall again.
“Because that was one of the unavoidable ones.” A deep uncaring voice replied.
Ocellus screamed in fear as she looked towards her bed. On the bed was the creature she had seen in her dreams. The head resembled a changeling; but everything else about its body was different. Its body looked like a gryphons. Its right front leg looked like a deer leg. While it's left was a talon. Its back legs looked like a lizards hind legs. And, it had the tail of a rattle snake.
“Who?” Ocellus began in fear, “Who are you?” She asked.
The creature smiled its wicked smile, “I'm Jinai,” It answered with a sickening chuckle, “And, those were my cards.” He finished.
Ocellus felt her mind and heart stop. That was Jinai and the cards she had just used were his. In a move faster than she had ever made. She walked over and picked up his cards; only to levitate them over him.
“Take them back! Take them!” She demanded only to see him push them away.
“Can't do that,” He said with a wicked grin, “You own them now.” He finished.
“No!” She shouted before letting the cards fall to the floor, “I don't want them! Take them back!” She almost screamed.
Jinai then floated off her bed and stood in front of her. Just as the deck of card flew in between them. He looked down at her, “Not how it works kid. When you opened the box; that made you the owner of the cards,” He informed her before he moved his mouth closer to her ear. Making her gasp in horror as she shut her eye. He had decided to show off his fangs; which looked like that of a rattle snakes, “And you will remain owner until you die.” He whispered another sinister chuckle escaping from him.
After a while Ocellus eventually got off the floor and onto her bed. While Jinai reclined himself in mid-air. She stared at him while he relaxed in the air. She then looked at the cards and back to him, “What are those?” She asked.
Jinai yawned, “Key's.” He answered in a uncaring tone.
“Key's?” Ocellus asked.
“Key's, windows, glimpses,” He listed off before looking towards her, “Fate.” He finished.
“Fate?” Ocellus asked.
Jinai grinned again, “That's right kid, fate,” He explained as he levitated the cards in front of him, “You see I'm a fate and these cards tell me everything about you and everyone else,” He spoke in his deep, sickening voice, “Well, that was until you found them. So, now they will only show you.” He finished.
Ocellus looked at him and then to the deck. Using her magic she pulled the deck towards her and took out the three cards. She then placed them on her desk; making sure to place them in the correct way she had seen them earlier. She looked at him and then pointed to the cards, “Well these cards of yours are wrong,” She spoke in a voice filled with hurt, “They didn't show the fate of Miss Pinkie,” She sniffled a little as she tried to hold back tears, “They showed the fate of.”
“Her foal,” Jinai interrupted as he moved closer to the cards, “Oh, they did what you asked them to,” He then looked at the cards and chuckled as he looked at the first one, “It was your job to understand what they predicted.” He finished as looked at the first card and chuckled, “Wonder who the luck guy was?” He said.
“My job!” Ocellus yelled in anger, “This cards just showed me images that made no sense!”
Jinai looked at her, “They make perfect sense if your a fate who knows how to read them,” He replied before looking towards the first card, “The lovers. It meant one night she either took a relationship she had to another level. Or, she had a one night stand and he was loaded with live rounds,” He then looked towards the middle card, “Princess of Pentacles, goddess of fertility and protector of new mothers,” He explained the card, “But, it's upside down meaning that they mare was not protected,” He then moved towards the final card, “Meaning that death was going to collect a soul today.” He finished with a smile that made Ocellus shiver.
“So,” She began, “These cards were warning me.”
Jinai interrupted her again, “That your teacher was going to have a miscarriage,” He laughed before floating in the air again, “That's right and there was nothing you could do about it.” He finished.
Ocellus stood up, “Then why did they show it to me?!” She yelled in anger.
“Now that would be telling.” He replied before he vanished.
Ocellus looked around for any sign of him; yelling out in anger as she looked at the cards. Watching as the three cards she had pulled out; flew right back into the deck. Thinking about what she was going to do with the cards; she began to think about the words Jinai had used. He had said she could not stop that one? Making her wonder if she could possibly stop others from happening. She mentally scolded herself as she sat at her desk. She began to think about her friend Sandbar.
“Reveal to me.”
