Cards of fate
Dromena, what is done
Previous ChapterNext ChapterOcellus sat on a low hanging tree branch as she watched Sandbar. She had taken the form of a bluejay. Just, so that she could spy on her friend. No, not spy, just keep watch over him. Today, was a day off from school for all of them. Meaning she could keep an eye out for any danger her friend may be in. Right now, he was in the middle of a small fair that had come to the town. Walking around; looking at the various games, rides, and food stands that were set up. It made her feel jealous for him; her having to guard him. While he had all the fun.
“How long do you plan on doing this?” asked the voice of Jinai.
She screamed in surprise and almost fell off the branch. She shot him a glare while he laughed at her, “That was not funny!” she hissed in anger while she rebalanced herself and started to look for Sandbar, “Great, I lost him.” she sighed.
“You're really gonna play the stalker today, huh?” He asked.
“I'm not stalking him,” Ocellus huffed eventually finding her target, “I'm just making sure he doesn't get hurt.” she answered.
“Hurt?” Jinai asked.
“Yes,” she replied before flying to a nearby flagpole. Balancing herself again; while her unwanted guest hovered in the air, “I read his fate last night. And, I am not going to allow him to get hurt.” she finished explaining.
“What was his fate then?” Jinai asked in an uncaring manor.
Ocellus had a look of determination appear in her eyes; while Sandbar walked over to a cotton candy stand. She was going to do everything she could to keep him from getting hurt today. After all; the cards showed her his fate last night.
(Flashback)
“Deiknumena,” she said as the first card flew from the deck, “Dromena,” the deck shuffled and the second card came, “Legomena.” she finished.
For the third one she noticed the deck had shuffled itself a little longer. What surprised her was that two cards flew from the deck. Not one. She quickly folded up the paper and closed her eyes. Waiting to hear the voice of her friend. She didn't have to wait for long.
“Please, don't leave me.”
Her eye's shot open and she opened the folded paper; underneath Deiknumena was a card of a stallion. The stallion had a large wheel or shield leaning against him. While in his magical hold he held a large spear. There was an eagle flying above him. While a ram stood behind him looking the other way. Above them a massive storm unleashed its furry.
“IV, The Emperor.” It made her think of one of Applejack's classes. She had told the kids the story of how they defeated the storm king. And, by the way the card looked; that stallion could possibly be another.
She then looked at the card underneath Dromena. The image was another stallion; who stood before the sun. Around him strange symbols floated. While in his hooves he held two swords. One that seemed to glow with pure magical energy. While the other was made of fire. What scared her was the large snake that had coiled itself around his body. And, by the way he was dressed. He looked almost like a king. She then read the cards name.
“XIX, The Sun.” Was that how the sun looked like in pony form? She wondered before looking to the last two.
Underneath Legomena she recognized one of the cards. It was VI, The Lovers. But, the card next to it was new. It was a mare who sat in front of a destroyed home. Behind the home was a burnt forest. The mare had tears falling from her eyes; while she held out her hooves. Around her sat five strange cups.
“Five of cups?” She asked herself before she was pulled from her room. Only to suddenly end up standing just outside the school.
She started to quickly search for her friend; hoping that she could see what was going to happen. Before she was returned to her room. She did find him. But, what she saw made her shed a few tears. Sandbar, was lying on the ground. His body covered in bruises and one of his eyes was black. She could also hear him crying.
“Sandbar!” She heard a muffled voice call out to him.
Before she could tell where the voice had come from; she found herself sitting at her desk in her room. She released a small hiss of anger; before looking down at the cards. This time she had a better understanding of them.
“Okay,” She spoke while letting out a small sigh, “Okay, from what you showed me. Someone is going to hurt Sandbar,” She talked to the cards that just remained on the table, “So, now it's my job to figure out who it is. And, I have to stop them.” She finished.
“You know they are just cards right?” Asked Jinai who suddenly appeared above her. Making her fall out of her chair with a scream, “I'm never going to get tired of this.” He laughed as she shot him a glare.
(End of Flashback)
“I'm surprised that you're already getting your first four,” Jinai commented as he floated next to her, “I didn't get that till my fifth year with the deck.” He finished.
Ocellus then looked at him in anger, “Can't you go somewhere else!” She shouted thankful that nobody could hear her, “You're going to blow my cover.” She finished before focusing back on Sandbar.
“No, I won't,” Replied Jinai in his typical uncaring voice, “Luckily it's only you who can see and hear me.” He explained.
“Lucky me.” Ocellus replied in a sarcastic tone.
Sandbar was on the move again; this time he walked up to a bench and sat down. While she had perched herself on another tree limb. Jinai rested his body on a limb just above her. She stared at him while he looked around. Possibly, waiting for the pony who was going to hurt him. That was when Jinai slid his head in front of her.
“How long do you plan on doing this?” He asked.
By now, Ocellus, was completely annoyed by him, “Can you go haunt a house or something?!” She almost yelled.
Jinai chuckle at that comment, “I would love to. But, then I would have a legal battle with actual ghosts.” He replied.
“Legal battle?” Ocellus asked as she tried to look around his head. Only to have him move it in front of her every time.
“Yeah, ghosts have got the best lawyers. I mean one time,” He then caught sight of something, “Oh! Peanuts!” He then vanished.
“Finally!” Ocellus sighed as she caught sight of Sandbar again. But, this time he was not alone. No, beside him stood a gryphon both of them knew.
“Gallus?” She asked herself as they started to walked back into the crowd.
Ocellus had to keep herself air-born for a good while just to keep watching them. So far the two had played various carnival games and ate from two different stands. It was then her stomach released a growl. Which made her release a sigh of envy. Who would've though trying to protect a friend; would make a changeling so hungry. But, she couldn't think about food now. She had to make sure Sandbar was going to be okay.
“Muffins! Hot and fresh muffins, here!” A pony at a food stand shouted.
“Okay, that's not fair,” She sighed in envy. Muffins were her favorite. Especially, the ones that had blueberries in them. It didn't take long for the scent of them found its way into her nose. Which made her stomach growl louder, “Okay, one muffin can't hurt,” Her stomach growled again, “Maybe two.” She finished before flying back down and transforming back into her original form.
Ocellus smiled happily after throwing away the wrappers. Her stomach was full of her favorite treat. And, she was starting to wonder which ride she wanted to go on. As she looked around; Jinai appeared beside her again.
“Having fun yet?” He asked.
“I was until you appeared.” She commented.
He chuckled at her comment, “Glad to be your pain in your a.”
“AHH!” A roller coaster full of ponies screamed as the ride went over its signature hill.
Ocellus simply shook her head and ignored him. She then started to make her way to the Ferris wheel. Jinai followed close behind her. They walked in silence for a little while; unfortunately for her. He ended up breaking the silence.
“So, how did it go?” He asked
“How did what go?” She asked him as they neared the ride.
“You know,” Jinai began, “That whole spying on your friend to protect him, sh.”
“Its gonna be close! Who's gonna be the lucky foal to pop their balloon first!” A stallion at a nearby vendor shouted.
Ocellus had come to a complete stop. She had completely forgotten why she was there in the first place. With a gasp; she flew above the crowd and started to look for the two. While Jinai watched her fly off in a panic.
“Why is she so worried?” He asked himself only to shrug shortly after, “Eh, I don't give a.”
“Dang, Vinyl you are good at ring toss.” Some random pony commented.
Ocellus searched for the two until the carnival had closed. She panted and gasped for air as she rested on a tree. She watched as the lights started to be turned off. A single tear then started to slide down her face. She brought her knees up to her chest and sobbed into them.
“I couldn't save him,” She sniffled as feelings of failure and regret started to enter her mind, “I'm so sorry, Sandbar.” She silently cried.
“See ya tomorrow, Gallus.” The voice of Sandbar spoke.
Ocellus head shot up and she looked around the tree. There one the path leading to the carnival was Sandbar and Gallus. Sandbar was waving goodbye to Gallus. Who was waving back him.
“Yeah, see ya tomorrow.” Gallus called back before flying in the direction of the school.
Ocellus released a small sob of happiness as she watched her friend Sandbar walk back home. But, she quickly pulled herself together and changed into a bird again. Following him as he walked back home. By, the time Sandbar had gotten home. Princess Celestia had already lowered the sun and her sister had raised the moon. As he walked into his home. Ocellus had landed and transformed back into her normal form. The entire day she had spent worrying about her friend. And, nothing happened to him. She released a yell of anger and frustration.
“What's got your exoskeleton in a twist?” Jinai asked from behind her.
Ocellus turned around and saw him floating in mid-air. He was lying on his back looking up at the stars, “They were wrong!” She hissed.
“What was wrong?” Jinai asked.
“The cards!” She screamed at him, “The stupid cards were wrong! They told me my friend was going to be hurt! But, no, he had a very good time at the carnival. With our friend, Gallus! And, nothing bad happened to him at all!” She finished while panting for breath.
It was then that she heard him laughing, “The cards are never wrong.” He replied.
She glared at him, “Well, they are this time!” She hissed.
“Oh, are they.” He said before casting his gaze towards the home.
It was then a loud shattering sound was heard. Followed by the sound of a mare and a stallion yelling. Ocellus quickly turned herself around; just in time to see Sandbar come running out of his home. With a stallion- possibly his father- running out close behind him.
“Don't come back you freak!” He shouted, “Don't come back!” He shouted again before walking back inside. Only to close the door with a slam.
Ocellus gasped in horror as she ran to catch up with her friend. She saw that he was running in the direction of the school. Eventually, he stopped running and he had collapsed to the ground. Ocellus, watched from the bushes. She saw him lying on the ground; he was crying. Just like she had seen in her vision. The cards had given her a warning. And, once again she had failed to prevent it from happening. Just as she was about to call to him a familiar voice called.
“Sandbar!” The voice of Gallus called.
Ocellus changed into a gecko and hid inside the bush. While Gallus landed and walked up to Sandbar. She couldn't hear what they were saying. She then jumped out of the bush and crawled as fast as she could towards them. She hid in the leaves of a bush that was closer to them. But, whatever had been said had already been said. For, Sandbar was now hugging Gallus. Who was doing his best to comfort the poor colt. Who now had a swollen black eye.
“I'm sorry, Sandbar,” Ocellus cracked voice as a tear fell from her eye, “I'm so sorry.” She finished while sighing in defeat. But, what happened next almost stopped her heart.
Gallus had brought one of his talons up to Sandbars chin. He then tilted his head upward; making him look him in the eye. They stared at each other for a few seconds and then. Gallus kissed him. Ocellus felt her jaw drop as she looked on in shock. Sandbar closed his eyes and returned the kiss. They held the kiss for a few seconds; before the broke the kiss.
“I love you.” Sandbar said.
Gallus smiled happily, “I love you, too.” He replied as Sandbar pulled him a little closer.
“Please,” Sandbar begged, “Don't leave me.” He finished.
“I won't.” Replied Gallus.
Ocellus quickly crawled out of the bush and made her way to her room. Transforming, back into her original form once she was far enough away. She entered her room and walked up to her desk; staring down at the cards in front of her. She couldn't believe it. The cards were right again. But, what surprised her was what they were trying to tell her. And, she had missed the warning by a mile.
“So, its you zero and the cards two.” Jinai said as he appeared behind her, “Man even a fate in training could have had that one figured out.” He finished.
Ocellus turned to glare at him, “You knew! Didn't you!?” She asked him in anger.
“Yep.” He answered.
“Then why didn't you tell me I was wrong!” She yelled at him.
“One, I can't. I'm not allowed,” He then chuckled, “Two, although I could have given you a hint. I like watching you get worked up.” He finished with a sick laugh.
Ocellus growled in anger as she turned around to her desk. Watching, as the cards flew back into the deck. She sat at her desk with a sigh. What could she do? She couldn't understand what the cards were telling her. All she could do was guess. And, she had guessed wrong twice.
“There's gotta be a way.” She said to herself.
“There is,” Jinai suddenly said which caused her to sit up and look at him, “I can give you eyes of fate.” He said.
“What?” Ocellus asked in confusion.
Jinai walked up and pulled one card from the deck, “You see this card?” He asked.
She looked at the card; the image was a stallion having trouble pulling a large boulder. Above him floated strange looking staffs of fire, “Ten of Wands?” She read.
“This card symbolizes the weight of ones on ambitions and responsibility's,” Jinai chuckled, “But, thanks to my vision; I can see what the card truly means. It means that you are stressed because there's so much expected of you. Yet, you wanna do your own things in life.” He finished.
“You are telling me this now,” Ocellus sighed in anger, “I could have used that yesterday and today!” She hissed.
“I can give it to you,” It was then he smiled wickedly, “But, you have to give me something in return.” He finished.
“What?” Ocellus asked.
“Your fate.” Jinai answered.
