Among the Living Once Again
Chapter Three: Partial Perception
Previous ChapterNext ChapterCivilization stands firm.
As the morning sun poked through the window inside the small two story cottage, Stan awoke. His eyes opening ever so slightly before sitting up in bed. Moving his hands to wipe his eyes, he took a look around, happy to see a room and not some random stone or tree beside him. Turning to the side of the bed, he plants his feet onto the warm floor and gets up from the bed. Walking to the door he slowly opens it to make his way to the bathroom to take a shower. Peddle Frost made sure to give him a tour of her house before he feel asleep soundly in the guest room.
The bathroom in this little pony's villa was like a shower back in the human world. It was pretty standard with a towel rack, a cabinet and a toilet. The only real flaw was, that it wasn't meant for humans. The mirror was definitely a bit lower at the sink that was for sure. Looking into the mirror with his green eyes, Stan almost was shocked in disbelieve at his own appearance. Squinting now he focuses on something. He didn't remember letting his beard get this long, not being fan of facial hair, he decided it'd be best to rid himself of this beard soon. He didn't want to use the poor pony's belonging more then he had, as he decided against using the shaving blade inside the cabinet. Well enough was enough, he got into the shower and cleaned up in a hurry.
Leaving the shower with a towel around his waist he made it back to his room. Getting dressed back into his grey tunic and pants he sat on the bed, putting on his socks now. He looked over at his armor letting out a sighed. Thinking to himself.
It would be best if I just left this here for now. Walking around town like a dumbass sporting armor isn't a good way to show I'm not a threat. Plus I need magic to operate this armor, unless I want to tire myself out in a mere hour with no magic it'd be best to leave it for now. Anyways I'll help Peddle Frost with her work and gather some information while I'm about. Ignorance to my location and knowledge of the land isn't a good position to be in, I'll change that.
A voice soon breaks Stan out of his train of thought. "Stan, breakfast is ready, I know your awake!" Peddle's voice was cheerful but sorta annoying like mom's voice when forcing the kids to the table. Making his way down the stairs to the small kitchen within the cottage. He sat down at a small wooden table which had four chairs. Around Peddle's house was various potted plants, notebooks of experiments and many books on the subject of anything green. The house was also the shop, as the front area that was separated from the living space contained a counter with a register within the shop area. In that area contained various wares and plants for sale.
Peddle aware of Stan sitting at the table now turns to him. "I hope you like fried corn on the cob. Nothing like a good harty meal to start your day." Smiling she brings over two plates firmly held by her hoofs. Placing them on the table she takes a seat across from Stan, soon meeting his gaze. "Thank you again, for everything you've done, and yes this breakfast looks fantastic." Spoke Stan as he began to dig into the meal before him. "No need to thank me so much now, it's rare for us to get visitors..well sorta." Looking to side she sighs a bit now, moving aside some of her white mane with a hoof which was covering her eyes.
"Sorta?" Stan's voice filled with interest, moving his gaze back to her. Putting down the now half eaten ear of corn that was in his hands. "Well, we get visitors of the griffin variety time to time. They aren't hostile or anything, but definitely don't make great guests." Her voice sounding truthful if not a bit sad. Maybe she had a bad run in with these griffins or something. I shouldn't pry. Stan thought to himself as he nodded, picking up his corn again to munch on it. Finishing his meal he got up from the table taking his plate to the kitchen to clean up, he soon hollered back to Peddle Frost. "Let me get your plate when your done. Least I could do."
With both plates now washed Stan convinced Peddle Frost he needs to repay her, for the generosity she gave. Accepting his offer he soon helped around the store, moving and cleaning various items. By around 2pm she told him, he's done enough, allowing him free time to roam about the town.
At first, most ponies stared at him oddly for the first few days, with maybe a few adventurous fillies asking him questions about what he is. At this point Stan decided to stick around the small town for a little while longer. He would do various jobs to make some bits which was the currency used. Beside him already helping Peddle everyday at her shop. He found the local library which was a pure gold mined for him, as it contained information of various things he wanted to know.
In the library throughout the next week after work he searched for,and picked various topics. Reading about the history of the Equestria continent, was his first task, making sure to skim and pick out all important information. Finding out within the book that there are four currently known Alicorns. Noting the current kingdoms and struggles in the land was also important. It was a different world now and thankfully a much better one. 30000 years ago it was just petty kingdoms who held no concentrated power, fighting over resources to no avail. It was almost like yesterday to him, serving his Alicorn summoners in their endeavors to unify the lands. Taking his mind back to the book, which now listed the Alicorns.
Two reside in Canterlot, the capital city of the Equestria Empire. One resides inside that of Ponyville, and the final one ruling over that of the Crystal Empire. The two Alicorn inside Canterlot are Celestia of the Sun and Luna of the Moon. Inside the newer book it describes how they move the celestial bodies in the sky. Luna seems to have a few extra tabbed chapters on her exile and return while Celestia has a long history Indicating she has a book all to herself...somewhere in the library. What struck Stan as nuts was the fact they were....IMMORTAL...apparently. The other two didn't seem to be immortal, at least from what the book provided.
Besides on the history, there were many books about other things like, heat season, technology, magic and many other topics that would make a good read. Stan knew he didn't have enough time to read everything so he picked a few more and skimmed over them with the time he had in town. He finally got a good idea on those changeling assholes who attacked him. The changelings seemed to have a long and turbulent history with ponies, griffins, dragons, and many more. Oddly the griffins with their reformed empire seemed to have made peaceful connections again with the united changeling hives. Assuring Stan that this time era had it's own issues with alliances and bouts of power struggle. Sorta like the old days.
One last thing he made sure to read up on. Was the mention of the reformation of the 'Elements of Harmony'. They seemed to be a selected few ponies to bring about peace and friendship throughout the lands given, with each harnessing an artifact power. One of the members being the one Alicorn from PonyVille,Twilight Sparkle...or Princess Twilight Sparkle now, as the book indicated in bold print. Finishing his read of the elements, he put the book down on his nightstand and began to drift off to sleep again. This was his 8th day staying at Peddle Frost's home, and he planned it to be his last, as tomorrow before sunrise he planned to head out.
Besides reading and making money, he washed his armor along with exercising to keep himself in shape during his stay.
Opening his eyes Stan soon rises once again to the room before him. Without a moment of hesitation Stan began to pack his belongings into a small sack he had purchased. Putting back on his armor he soon release some magic. Letting his magic slowly settle inside each piece at it rested on him. With that he grabbed his stack of books and a note in one hand. He needed to return these to the library along with leaving Peddle a note. Thanking her once more, he explained that Mr. trouble himself is now heading off once again. Mentioning in the last line that he'd come visit in due time.
With the books now returned at the drop off box by the library he looked to the path leading out of town, it seemed to lead into a huge forest. It was a bit dark and damp looking, but no matter. Making sure to have left before sunrise Stan now walks out of town, happy with his questions mostly answered.
Now having walked a few miles within the boring forest he noticed various trees and small animals scurrying about. Nothing out of the ordinary to be honest. Something did catch his eye up ahead. A cave etched into the side of a hill within the forest.
This looks like the perfect place for me to preform my little scan of the land. I just hope it doesn't attract too much attention. I have been concealing my magic pretty well up to this point. My true power is almost back, this spell will provide two important goals of mine. That being a test of my current power, and that of those with power around me.
Finding a spot only a few meters inside the dark cave, Stan sat down into a crisscross position with his legs.
With his eyes closed, and his hands together in a praying position he began to build his magic. A small aura of blue sparked from his body, as swirls of white energy emitted from the aura. His mind was now blank and clear of all thought. He began to focus immensely onto a single point inside his mind. Scanning around the area he looked for beings who possessed the most magic. Seeing nothing in the small radius he had projected, he increased his power. The aura around him also increased, a light blue could be seen from the cave outside, if one were to be walking by. The radius was now much larger, involving the whole Crystal Kingdom, and most of Equestria at this point. With his focus he detected many powerful beings. Mostly them being unicorns, along with the Alicorns as he suspected. Increasing his power to help paint a more clear picture he felt himself being watched now.
Stan at this point noticed what he had just done....most of the beings he saw knew about his presence the moment increased this spells power. Causing Stan to seize the spell right that second. Powering back down now, with just his armor being fed at this point. He suppressed all magic inside him to near nothing hoping it would hide him if anyone tried to trace back to the location he was in.
Stan's voice choppy and rigid , as he still sat crisscross style with his eyes wide open from shock.
"I knew this spell wasn't a good idea! But it was needed. I at least know their are hundreds of being out there with high level magical abilities. Those two Alicorns.....ridiculous....so much magic... I hope to god they didn't pinpoint my location...they could easily do so."
Meanwhile across the land of the Equestrian continent, Stan's sudden spell caused a stir.
All the beings of high magical ability were only slightly alarmed by the sudden jolt of this presence they felt. Even if it was for a brief second. Most just shook it off, as some tremors like these meant nothing out of the ordinary in today's age. Most of these beings were unicorns of nobility or others who train in the arts of magic intensely. This sorta of thing happened often with so many villains about nowadays.
In the high palace of Canterlot, sat on a highly decorated throne was Princess Celestia herself. She was not shaken a bit by the sudden jolt, but giggled instead. "Looks like somepony was practicing another spell of high uncertainty. This spell and energy particularly odd this time around."Spoke Celestia with intrigue in her voice. Luna by Celestia's side, standing silent after the jolt. Luna's reaction was one of indifference, as she would much rather be in bed right now. "Come sister aren't you a bit interested in this development." Spoke Celestia with excitement in her voice. Luna a bit sleepy eye'd spoke in a tired voice. "Not in the least, probably some idiot pony tampering with magic again." Her voice now annoyed.
Celestia was a beautiful Alicorn of nobility birthed a long time ago. Her fur was of a pure white, without a single imperfection. The mane was a long flowing hue of purple, blue, and green with seemly endless sparkles popping about. On her flank was what appeared to be a large sun. As an Alicorn she sported long white wings to match her fur. The wings looked breath taking to most who view them. On her head she wore a crown encrusted with jewels, along with a matching necklace fastened around her neck. A long white horn protruded form her head, with her large purple eyes under it. She had very defined eye lashes to just emphasis her feminine look. With her small muzzle in a smile now looking to her sister. Celestia was much larger then most other ponies, she stood a good six and half feet on all fours with slender legs.
Luna on the other hand looked to be a near opposite of her sister color wise at least. She stood around five foot five on all fours. Luna's fur was a very dark navy color, sporting smaller wings that matched her main bodies color. Her mane was something else entirely. It was a transparent light blue color with little star's flickering about it. It looked like a starry night sky. Luna's eyes were a light aqua green color with a smaller horn than her sister on top of her head. The tail on Luna matched her mane which was also the case for her sister. Luna like her sister also had a mark but it was of a moon on her butt, along with just a simple black crown on-top her head. With finally a matching necklace of a pale moon around her neck. Luna now scampering down the steps of the throne heading for the door.
The throne room was a massive room filled with ornaments and decorations. One of the more prominent pictures being a picture depicting the princesses raising the sun and moon which was plastered onto the ceiling. Standing at the end of the room were large doors, with two sun guards standing tall in armor on each side of the door.
Before Celestia spoke Luna was gone. Making way for her room, not wanting to chit-chat while half asleep. "She really is no fun in the morning now is she." Celestia muttered a bit amused at the whole situation. Little things like this kept her mind off the daunting task of taking care of this kingdom which now needed its ruler more then ever.
Back in the cave Stan finally got to his feet.
"Ok, with that, no more magic for a while Stan...like why don't you just get a huge ass microphone and announce yourself to the world....." sighing from his own actions he looked to the cave entrance. Heading outside he gasped lightly to breathed in the fresh air, as the musty scent of the cave had gotten old. Heading back to the path as if nothing happened he walked once again on the dirt path.
Leaving the forest down the dirt path, it soon became road. The area now looked be a plain area again filled with the green glass and what looked to be farm fields in the distance. Pulling out a map, he pondered where he should go.
Canterlot seems the best place to go, it's a large city with tons of work, and maybe if I get lucky I could get an audience with the princesses. I just hope they are as accepting as the last bunch in the town I just left. Sadly Canterlot is a long trek from here. Probably a few weeks at best. If only I could fly. BUT...if I'm reading this right there is a train in the next town I could take. Good.
Putting the map back inside his sack. He briskly walked to the next destination, a larger town, which contains a rail junction to various parts of Equestria. While on this road he came across a billboard of some sort. On the billboard in bright obnoxious letters was the word "Wonderbolts". Under the words stood various colorful pegasus in racing poses. With smaller print underneath, indicating the date and location of the show. At least the entertainment sector of Equestria was active and alive he thought.
Thinking of the ad, he chuckled at how ponies were just like people in the human world. Putting up billboards with ads, what else was alike to the human world. Stan thinking again he remembered that the ponies had many of the same technology as people, something starkly different from 30000 years ago.
"I'll admit it, they did look pretty cool on the billboard, The show is for the town up ahead as described by the billboard. I wouldn't be against paying for a ticket to view the show. I'm in no rush at this point." He said as he kept walking, talking to himself to break the silence of this trip.
The land to Stan was almost something of a fairy tail. The sun was much brighter then when he was around before the whole sealed in a crystal for 30000 years. These vistas, and views would be perfect for a 12 month long calendar he thought was he looked upon the various marvels before his eyes. From the mountains in the distance, to some lakes he could spot almost out of his view range. It appeared the forest he came out of was higher up then most of the land. The dirt road sloping down as he walked.
Walking further down road he came to a cornfield. Just like corn in the human world it stood tall in the gleaming sun light ,soaking up as many rays as possible. Something that baffled Stan was the fact he didn't see a single traveler on his way from the small town to this area. Not even a group of bandits were on the path, was crime so rare in this land of peace and friendship?
Without warning Stan spotted two little fillies running through the corn stalks onto the road right in front of him. He stopped and stood still as they also froze in position. Before them the little fillies saw a large metal creature standing on two legs, with a full faced helmet. Stan didn't look like the most friendliest of beings. Before the small ponies could make a break for it Stan called out to them in the most non threatening voice he could muster.
"Hello there, I don't mean any harm. I'm just a wayward traveler coming from up north." Taking off his helmet he met the eyes of the two fillies with his own. His face calm, with a smile as he closed his eyes. His body relaxed.
"No need to be afraid now." Stan spoke softly.
Before he could make another gesture of his intentions a large creature from above swooped down at Stan. Knocking him off his feet, he jumped back up to see the little ponies now gone. As the large creature now descended to the ground in-front of him. Thinking to himself. Maybe those little ponies weren't afraid of me, but maybe of this creature that just knocked me flat on my ass.
A male griffin with grey feathers, surrounding it's body and wings stood before Stan. It's back side like that of a lion, with a matching tail that went side to side. The griffin had a large orange beak with a black stripe at the tip. His eyes were brown and large like most creatures in this world. Displayed large talons at the end of front arm holding it up for Stan to see. Those talons alone could easily shred iron maybe even steel. Griffins in this world were not to be taken lightly.
"So, strange creature did you think you get away with organizing those little ponies to steal from me?" Spoke the griffin in a harsh and defensive tone. It's voice was much more scratchy sounding then a ponies.
"Steal what? I don't even know those little ponies....I just got here! Who even are YOU?" Stan spoke back with anger.
"Playing stupid, it won't work! Not this time!" Spoke the Griffin as it charged at Stan.
With the griffin's talons extended towards Stan he pulled out his sword to match the incoming attack. Blocking it, as Stan's sword soon met with the talon's in a clash, sending out a ring of metal on metal contact. With the other talon the griffin soon swung for Stan's right leg. Moving his left arm to block this strike, another ring of metal on metal could be heard as talon and metal met again. Pushing against each other now trying to test each others strength the griffin smiled.
"Good to see that not all thief's are cowards!" Hollered the griffin as it let go of Stan's sword and gauntlet jumping back to pounce again.
"Listen here you fuck-wit! I don't know what you are on about me being a thief, but if your looking for an ass beating you've found one!" Yelled Stan as he soon began to power up, his blue aura swirling wildly around his body. Now grasping his left hand, small sparks being flying out as he concentrates magic towards his palm.
The griffin hesitant now, from seeing the blue aura didn't make a move. Within the next second. A bolt of low powered energy struck the griffins left shoulder. "UGH!" With a sudden whine the griffin looked petrified at the creature before it. It wasn't just using armor but also magic!? The griffin knew he couldn't have dodged that even if he was trying, magic was a seriously weapon. The griffin knew he was screwed against this magic user.
"Stay right there unless you want another catching you on the beak!" Stan spout as he charged up for another attack. This time sending a projectile towards the griffin that incapacitated him with blue rings holding his front and back legs together. Falling to the ground the griffin looked up to the creature that stood before him.
"Now...could you please explain why you attack me!" Stan said harshly awaiting an answer. With only a sigh comming from the beaten griffin, who begins to answer.
"I thought you were a thief in cahoots with those little ponies. They have been stealing form my stall outside of town for sometime now. I thought they had a master, and you looked the part." The griffin spoke truthfully.
"You see I was brash with my judgement and for that I am sorry. Could you pretty please...take off these restraints now?" spoke the griffin as he rolled onto his side.
"Very well, but attack me again if I release you, and it will be the last thing you do." Stan spoke in a cold tone.
Raising his hand he undid the rings holding the griffin's limbs. Getting back to all fours the griffin soon smiled at the creature before him.
"Thank you, and I wouldn't dare..." responded the griffin as he stood before Stan. Lowering his weapon Stan looked at the griffin, getting a better look. Thinking to himself. Hmm they didn't change much over these 30000 years. Still as vicious as the last one I fought. I should be thankful he didn't have back up tho. Griffin swarms were not to be taken lightly....
"So Mr. Griffin.....ummm"
"It's Longbeak Stumper, and I hope we can get off to a better start this time." responded Longbeak with a smile on his beak before Stan could speak.
"Well I'm Stanley Mayer, just a traveler on these roads." Spoke Stan.
Longbeak now thinking to himself, getting the full view of the creature before him. He laughed at what he just heard. This creature was no traveler, he wore some impressive armor, with an embedded picture of an Alicorn at the chest-plate. He looked like some lost relic that crawled out of some crypt not too long ago.
If only he knew the half of it......
Putting out his hand Stan soon began to heal the wounded shoulder of Longbeak. Longbeak looked stunned on how fast his shoulder healed with this strange creatures magic.
"There, no hard feelings now. Mr. Stumper." Stan said as he let his hand down, getting ready to get back on his journey inwards toward the town.
"Wait...after all that I've done, please let me give you a tour Mr. Mayer, it's the least I could do after my outburst." Spoke Longbeak hoping Stanley takes him up on his offer.
"I would gladly, it's a bit dull traveling alone anyways." Smiled Stan as he stood still allowing the griffin to join his side.
After that small scuffle, the two individuals walked down the road heading to the gate that was just out of sight.
