Chapter 1: Frustrations
"Spike! Get up already!" Twilight was outside of Spike's room waiting for him to come out. Some seconds passed before she heard a frustrated grunt and the creaking of the door as it was being opened by the dragon.
"Hi Twilight, what is so important that you needed to wake me up for?" Asked Spike in a tone that sounded annoyed and sleepy at the same time.
"Oh, just in time! I need you to deliver this letter to Pinkie Pie! We're going to have a reunion this afternoon and I just remembered we needed pastries! Oh, I hope they can be prepared in time!"
"Seriously? And why do I need to deliver it?" Asked Spike in a sarcastic tone.
"Because I know you have nothing better to do! Now go, and on the way there you should buy more quills, I think I'm running out."
Spike was about to protest, but Twilight had levitated him out of the room and had put some bits on his claw. Spike sighed and went for the stairs, he always had to do whatever Twilight asked him to do, and he hadn't complained, not even once. But Spike also felt like they should give him at least some recognition for his work, at least a 'Thank you, Spike' would suffice.
Still, Spike thought that it was a nice day outside, the birds were singing and the sun was shining with a beautiful glow. Spike got out of the castle and closed the doors with a tired sigh, he had been awoken of a dream where he was the boss in the castle, it was a strange dream, but a nice one. Spike thought that being the leader could be more than just bossing around your friends.
Spike walked over to the 'quills and sofas' store. It was a strange store, why would the stallion only sell quills and couches? Spike didn't want to think too much about it, because if he did, then he would be questioning ponykind itself, and ponykind its just weird. Once he got there, he rang the bell to let the stallion know that he was there. After a few seconds passed, a stallion appeared behind the cash registor and looked around to see who rang the bell.
"Hey, down here." The stallion heard a voice and he looked down to see the same dragon who purchases quills for the princess of friendship every week.
"Oh, hello there, I'm sorry I didn't see you there, I must be used to it by now but I'm not. Let me guess, quills for the princess of friendship?"
"Yup, and what do you mean that you must be used to it by now?"
"Oh, I'm sorry, but you're the same dragon who comes here and buys quills for your chief, you must be like her butler, right?"
"What? No, I'm her friend, and I'm nopony's butler!"
"Yeah right, I've seen you around town buying supplies and materials for your chief, and the best part of all is that I can imagine you in a butler outfit and it would be perfect!" The stallion laughed as he went to the back to get the quills. At this point, Spike was gritting his teeth and forcing his free claw to form a fist. But Spike calmed down before the stallion came back from the back of the store.
"Just take the bits and the change already." Spike threw the bits Twilight gave him and walked away with the quills in his claw.
"Thank you, and say hi to your chief for me!" Spike just flipped the stallion over in his mind.
Spike arrived at Sugarcube Corner and was greeted by the pink maned pony herself, but as Spike tried to approach her with the letter in his claw, she ran to the back and came out with three milkshakes. Spike stood beside the counter and he saw Pinkie delivering the milkshakes to the CMC in the corner of the building.
"Hey Spike! Do you want something sweet to bite? Or did Twilight say you have something to give me?" Said Pinkie as she approached the dragon with a big smile. Spike knew that you don't just question Pinkie Pie, so he didn't say anything about her guessing it.
"Actually the second one, she said that she was planning on organizing a reunion and she forgot the pastries." Spike gave the letter to Pinkie, who read it with a lot of attention, almost too much attention, it was like she was checking if the structure of the paper had something wrong.
"Oh, I already knew that silly filly would forget about the pastries, everypony does! Luckily for everypony I always bake extra cakes and cupcakes for cases just like this!" Before Spike could say anything, Pinkie ran to the kitchen, and she returned in less than five seconds with three dozens of cakes and pastries on her hooves.
"Uh, Pinkie, I think that would be too much for six ponies and a baby dragon."
"Oh, didn't Twilight tell you that she was inviting a lot of ponies?"
"Twilight didn't tell me anything! I just woke up and she asked me to bring pastries for a reunion I knew nothing about and buy quills on the way!"
When Spike said that he knew nothing about the reunion they were talking about, Pinkie made a face that showed regret for a second, like she forgot something important, and Spike noticed it. It looked like she tried to hide something and/or she mispoke, but Pinkie returned to her smiley face after that short moment.
"Oh, I'm sorry about it, I'm sure she had a good reason to not tell you, or maybe she just forgot, you know her, right?" Spike knew that Pinkie would be pretty terrible keeping secrets, and he didn't need to know what kinds of faces she made when she tried to hide something to inmediately recognize them. He was about to ask more questions, but he saw that she was having a hard time, so Spike decided to let her be.
"Well, I'll go to the castle and I'll bring these things to Twilight, see ya!"
As Spike left Sugarcube Corner, Pinkie let out a long and reliefed sigh, she was about to lose it, at least he didn't ask anything else, because the whole thing would've gotten spoiled otherwise.
Spike made his way through the streets of Ponyville, barely keeping the cakes in shape, maybe if only the citizens of Ponyville helped him. But each time Spike gave them a look that asked them to help, they ignored him, what a bunch of jerks, Spike thought, they only want to help themselves, and when they are between the sword and the wall, they cry out loud.
When Spike entered the castle, he was greeted with a purple alicorn appearing in front of his face, and who made him fall to the ground, but before the pastries got squashed, Twilight reacted and levitated them, causing the cakes to stop falling.
"Ow, was that neccessary Twilight?" Grunted Spike on the ground.
"Sorry about that, and about the next thing, you're probably going to get mad at me."
"What is it?"
"I need you to go to Sweet Apple Acres and ask Applajack for three barrels of their cider."
"Oh come on!"
"Told you."
"Ugh, just take the cakes and I'll go."
"Spike, are you okay? You seem kinda down today."
"No, it's nothing."
"Are you sure? Maybe we can talk about what's trou-"
"I said I'm GOOD!" Spike yelled without realizing it. After a few moments, Spike realized it and he ran away from Twilight, out of the castle and towards Sweet Apple Acres.
'I hope Twilight doesn't get too mad at me when I come back.' Spike thought as he was running.
Once Spike was in Sweet Apple Acres, he approached the house in the middle of the field of apple trees, and searched for the apple farmer, but only found her big brother standing on the door, like he was expecting Spike to arrive.
"Hey there, Big Mac!" The stallion just waved back. "Can you give me three barrels of apple cider please? Twilight says she needs them for some kind of reunion."
Big Mac gave Spike a sign to wait there, and Spike did just that. While Spike waited for the stallion to return, he took in the view of Sweet Apple Acres, the farm was as good as ever, and Spike could see that they had made some changes to the orchard, it looked better. Spike couldn't help but wonder how would this feel like, working in a farm all day to the point where you have to live there. But even if the Apple family were stuck to the orchard, they seemed happy, Applejack, Big Macintosh, Apple Bloom and Granny Smith were happy to live there, but Spike wondered if Apple Bloom would be happy keeping the farm alive in the future. He wondered how it would feel like to be free from all responsabilities and not caring about anything, but that life seemed weird for him. His train of thoughts was bound to continue if it wasn't for Big Macintosh poking his shoulder.
"Oh, sorry!" Spike turned around and saw Big Macintosh with a wagon with three barrels of cider. "Wait, how do I carry all of this to the castle by myself?" Big Mac shrugged and went to the barn without saying a single word, kinda suspicious but Spike was too angry to care.
Once Spike was out of view, Big Macintosh went inside the barn to meet Applejack, who smiled at her brother. "Do ya think he knows?" Big Macintosh shook his head to say no. "Good, I just hope that we can give the fella a good time tonight." Big Macintosh raised an eyebrow at her sister. "Not like that ya big pervert!"
Spike arrived at the castle at five o' clock, he felt like his body was pulverized and his soul had been broken from all the work he had to do. "If Twilight doesn't give me at least one bowl of gems after all this I swear..." He mumbled as he pushed the wagon inside the castle where he found a purple alicorn staring at him.
"Oh, was it much trouble for you?" Asked the alicorn in a soft voice, she knew that he had worked very hard today.
"Nooo, I'm just sweating because I look more handsome this way." Replied Spike, in a sarcastic tone.
"Look, I'm sorry for everything I've put you to do today, but I just need one more teeny tiny small thing."
"what."
"I need you to go to the Boutique and pick up a couple of boxes from there."
"Boxes?"
"Yes, Rarity will tell you what you need to bring here."
Spike just let out a big and frustrated sigh as a response, but he still obeyed and went out to the Boutique. Twilight was very sad, she knew exactly when Spike was mad at her, but she actually has never seen him in such a bad mood.
"I hope he gets better."
Spike arrived at the Boutique, almost dead because of everything that happened to him today. Spike never felt so tired and grumpy in his life, but why? He always did everything Twilight asked him to do and he hadn't complained, not even once. Spike didn't know if there was something wrong with him or if the problem were the ponies around him. He couldn't help but think of the comment the pony at the store said. If he wasn't Twilight's butler then why did it feel like it? Was he becoming older and angrier? Or were his friends just jerks? Spike could've kept going, but he just ringed the doorbell and oped that Rarity would still be there. No matter what the issue was, just staring at her eyes made him happy again.
Rarity opened the door, and before Spike could even say hello, she pulled him inside as quickly as possible. Once Spike was on his feet again, he fully saw Rarity, she was in one of her best outfits: a white dress with lots of gems, rubies and jewels to make it look even more fabulous. Spike could only stare at her in surprise as she levitated a couple of things inside a mini bag and spoke to him from the corner of her eye.
"You have to forgive my manners Spikey, but as you can see I'm getting ready to assist to a great event. I know the reason Twilight sent you here, but you'll have to do me a favour and search for the boxes yourself for tonight, my dear."
Spike's stare turned into a frown almost instantly. "What?! I don't even know what I'm searching for!"
"Oh, you have to look for a couple of red boxes in the basement, in these moments I'm quite unsure if they are red brick, red cherry or red apple." Spike just rolled his eyes. "Well, I'm sorry for leaving you without having an actual conversation, but I have to go. Bye-bye!" And with that, Rarity slammed the door of the Boutique, leaving Spike with a lot of rage inside him.
Rarity arrived at the castle in a hurry, but not so fast so her dress wouldn't be ruined. Once she got inside she greeted everypony who was there, Twilight, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, the CMC, some fillies and colts from the schoolhouse, the cakes and some other ponies she didn't even recognize. Once she was done with the greetings she approached Twilight.
"Twilight, is everypony here?"
"The only ones missing are Big Macintosh, Rainbow Dash and Spike, although Big Mac is not coming."
"What? Why not?"
"He says that Granny Smith was having another stroke."
"Oh, that poor mare, I hope she gets better sometime."
"Yes, Rainbow Dash is just late and we know where Spike is."
"I have to say, your strategy was amazing darling, while he was searching for the boxes with the party hats and outfits I personally made for the occasion we get the final preparations ready!"
"I think it might not have been the best strategy."
"Why not?"
"After the work I put him to do while I got everything ready I don't know if he will be fine."
"Whatever do you mean Twilight? You know him, he's a real gentlecolt! Gentle-dragon?"
"Maybe, but I have never seen him in such a bad mood."
"But not everypony has the princess of friendship as their friend! And certainly not everypony would have the princess search for his friends and organize a special party to thank him for all his work!" Twilight was about to reply, but at that moment Rainbow Dash came inside the castle, she had been late due to a pegasus screwing up the clouds and threatening the weather of Cloudsdale, luckily the Wonderbolts stopped him in time. Now all the guests were there!
"Rainbow Dash, why are you so late now?" Asked Twilight with anxiety.
"Sorry, it's a weird story. Do you guys remember that pegasus that seemed like a decent guy to date?" Replied Rainbow Dash.
"Oh yes, he is such a sweetheart!" Replied Rarity, remembering a handsome stallion that was aspiring to be a Wonderbolt.
"Oh no he's not!" Replied Rainbow Dash. "When he found out that he was rejected he started screwing up the clouds of Cloudsdale! If we hadn't done something he would've screwed up the weather of Equestria!"
"Dear Celestia! And where is he now?"
"He is in jail for now, the authorities will decide his sentence tomorrow."
"I'm happy for it!" Exclaimed Rarity.
Spike carried the boxes towards the castle as the rage that had occupied him had finally gone away, hopefully Rarity doesn't mind that a few of the mannequins have been knocked over. Spike was about to enter the castle, where he saw Rainbow Dash was heading towards, but he herd his friends talking inside and he decided to listen to their conversation.
"Well, I always thought that there was something odd about him." Twilight said.
"In my opinion, he always was a jerk!" He heard Applejack say.
"What a horrible guy." Softly said Fluttershy.
"He is more than that, he is just a meanie to the core!" He heard Pinkie say.
"Please Pinkie, don't be so soft on him. He is just an outrageous monster and a brute!" Rarity finished.
Spike couldn't believe it, after everything he's done for them that's how they thank him? By calling him a brute? That was enough, Spike let the boxes drop and ran away, he didn't know where he was going towards, but he just wanted to get away from his so called "friends" who, instead of thanking him for his work, just lash out at him for no reason.
Spike couldn't see it, but he was going towards the Everfree forest, he had tears in his eyes by now, which made it difficult to him to see where he was going. When he reached a certain part of the forest he felt the ground below him disappear, or more accurately, the floor made out of sticks and leaves broke and he fell down into the darkness.
Spike screamed, he felt like the fall was too high and that he would die because of it, but unexpectedly enough, he felt something stop his fall, he looked down to see that he had landed in a pile of mattresses big and soft enough to stop the fall and create a ladder to get down.
'Mattresses? Where am I?' Asked Spike to no one in particular, as he got down he looked at the room he was in. It was a giant room with walls made out of wood, like he was somehow inside a giant tree, if this was really a big tree then this must be some part of the Everfree forest. The hole he had fallen in was above a huge pile of mattresses, all stocked up and placed in a way in which only an Equestriaquake could break it down. The room also had some kind of laboratory in the center, maybe a genius put this place together.
By the time Spike got down his tears were starting to dry off, he was still terribly angry with his friends but the sadness was starting to go away. He got closer to the center of the giant room, he saw some stairs in the back of the room, those are probably to exit.
Once he reached the center, there was a cauldron in the middle of the laboratory with some kind of red substance, the cauldron was covered in some kind of glass box, probably to not let the nature of this place get to whatever is in the cauldron. There was also a note, Spike read it with care, he took in every sentence of it, but he didn't seem to understand it.
The note said:
Hi.
If you're reading this then you have found this place, my laboratory. I am... or more accurately, I was a doctor, a scientist who dedicated his life to one dream, but the dream now seems unreachable to me.
In the center of my laboratory there is a cauldron with a substance, I thought that I could use it to get everything I've lived for, but I was wrong. Now it only serves as a temporary escape to the stresses and responsabilities of the daily life, but it's dangerous. If you're willing to risk it for a good feeling then I guess I can't stop you, but be aware that there could be a lot of negative consequences.
And if you're willing to go even further, then you'll find my journal in the desk, you should be able to finish my work, just be aware that you're playing a VERY dangerous game.
Sincerely,
Dr. Albert Henry Jekyll.

I'll explain why I didn't change the doc's name in the next chapter. Also, OOC FTW!
