A Foal’s Mind

In Pumpkin Cake’s mind, there were many things that fascinated her and her brother. Such as their Mommy and Daddy, Aunt Pinkie Pie, the world around them, and more.

Pumpkin and Pound Cake we’re still foals, true, but their brains had grown big enough now for them to understand. Basic things such as walking, talking, learning to control her magic in Pumpkin’s case, or getting the hang of flying in Pound’s case. In other words, while the twins were a year or two away from starting school, they’re still young enough to be considered foals while at the same time were starting to gain memory and other mental advancements.

Up until this point in her home it was only herself, her brother, their parents, and the best foal-sitter/aunt figure they could ask for: Pinkie Pie. However, only recently Pumpkin and Pound were told by their parents that two new foals were on their way, and she and her brother were about to become something called, “older siblings”.

At first, Pumpkin Cake couldn’t comprehend what her parents told her and Pound Cake. Two new foals? Older siblings? There were two foals already here, weren’t there? It didn’t make sense to her or her brother. Even if some new foals were coming, where would they be coming from? Eventually, Pumpkin and Pound thought nothing of it and dubbed their parents’ announcement as “grownup talk” just to mess with them.

However, ever since that day Pumpkin and Pound began to notice some changes happening to their Mommy. She began to get more emotional; sometimes she would be angry, sometimes she would be sad, and other times she would act more happy and joyful than she normally did. Their Mommy also began to eat more. Mommy started eating more than Pumpkin thought possible, even things Mommy often refused to touch.

The biggest change Pumpkin and Pound noticed was their Mommy’s tummy. Over the last six months their Mommy’s belly began to grow. Initially, Pumpkin and Pound thought it was because of Mommy’s overeating, but they saw it was growing bigger and bigger even without her eating so much.

The bigger Mommy’s tummy grew, the more excited their parents became. Pumpkin and Pound only grew more confused at their behavior. Were they happy about Mommy gaining weight? Did it have something to do with the new foals they mentioned before? And now that the twins thought about it, where did foals even come from?

Pumpkin and Pound were beginning to consider asking their parents about the new foals, and where they can from, when they got quite the surprise one day.

Mommy and Daddy were sitting on the couch while watching them playing in their playpen when Mommy suddenly gasped and put her hooves on her swollen stomach. She said something about “The foals are kicking!” to Daddy, and Daddy then got off the couch, walked to Mommy’s front, and planted a kiss on Mommy’s tummy before placing his own hooves next to Mommy’s.

Pumpkin Cake and Pound Cake just stood astounded at Mommy’s words and Daddy’s actions. The foals are kicking? What are they kicking? Why are they kicking? Why did Daddy kiss Mommy’s tummy? Where were the foals?!

Mommy and Daddy turned their heads towards Pumpkin and Pound and immediately noticed the dumbstruck looks on their faces. They shared a glance, giggled to each other before Daddy walked over to the playpen and picked the twins up. Daddy then placed Pumpkin and her brother on the couch, right in front of Mommy’s large belly.

Pumpkin regarded Mommy’s mountainous middle with great curiosity. To Pumpkin, it looked like Mommy had swallowed a foal, two foals at most. She glanced at Pound and saw he had a similar curious expression on his face. Neither of the twins knew what to do until Mommy pulled them closer and said, “Go on, say ‘Hi’ to them.”

Now face-to-face with Mommy’s massive belly, Pumpkin and Pound were more confused than ever. Say “Hi” to who? Why did Mommy pull them closer to her belly? What did Mommy and Daddy know about the new foals that they did not? It was almost unbearable for the twins. Pumpkin was about to cry to show her dissatisfaction until she and Pound saw something they didn’t expect: Mommy’s tummy moved.

Pumpkin was stunned. Why did Mommy’s tummy just move? It couldn’t move on its own, could it? Pumpkin kept staring at her Mommy’s tummy and after a moment saw it move again. This time Pumpkin was close enough to see that Mommy’s tummy didn’t actually move. Rather, something inside Mommy’s tummy caused it to move. Pumpkin thought as hard as she could and finally figured it out.

The new foals were inside Mommy’s tummy all along! And the reason Mommy’s tummy was growing bigger was because the foals were growing from all the food Mommy had been eating! Although, one last question remained: How did they get in there?

Did Mommy eat some pony like she thought before? No, it couldn’t be. Mommy was too kind a pony to do that! Was she? However, Pumpkin didn’t feel frightened at the thought of a foal being inside her Mommy’s tummy. She felt... intrigued, excited, ecstatic even.

Pumpkin looked at her brother again and saw that Pound came to a similar if not exact conclusion as his sister. He shared a glance with Pumpkin and looked back at their Mommy’s tummy with great anticipation.

They were still reluctant, but Pumpkin Cake and Pound Cake eventually raised a hoof and brought it within a centimeter of Mommy’s tummy. A second or two later, they placed their hooves upon the massive mass that was their Mommy’s tummy.

The belly was warm and firm, and felt very soothing to the touch. Within seconds, Pumpkin Cake and Pound Cake were rewarded with a series of movements and shifts that confirmed their suspicions. The new foals, their new young siblings, were growing inside their Mommy’s tummy. Pumpkin and Pound were overjoyed and stood on their hind legs and hugged Mommy’s tummy, eager to feel more movement from the foals within it.

Mommy and Daddy chuckled and leaned in to give Pumpkin and Pound proud hugs. They huddled around the wriggling womb, all excited to meet the new members of their family.

Little did they know, the Cake Family as a whole were about to receive another, much larger surprise. A surprise that was to come from a source who considered herself to be the embodiment of surprise-giving. One such source that was, for about six months now, was away on a very special occasion. An occasion that would also double the number of fruit-bearing. Literally.

Sugar Cube Corner’s front doors burst open in a shower of confetti and streamers, startling the buildings’ owners and caused their foals to cry hysterically. The perpetrator responsible for the disturbance hardly acknowledged her reckless antics and trotted inside the building proper with a huge smile on her face. With a huge intake of breath, the pink-coated mare shouted out in a high-pitch voice, “Mr. and Mrs. Cake~, I’m home!~”

Pumpkin and Pound ceased their wailing almost immediately as they’d recognized the voice of their favorite foal-sitter.

PINKIE PIE!!!

After giving their parents a bigger case of ringing ears, the twins slid down off the couch, galloped down the stairs, dashed into the main dining room of Sugar Cube Corner, and tackled the aforementioned mare to the floor. Pumpkin felt Pinkie Pie’s hooves surround her and her brother in a hug and laugh happily with them.

At that moment, Mommy and Daddy entered the room and smiled at the sight of them on top of Pinkie Pie. Pinkie Pie then got back up, sat down on her haunches and picked up Pumpkin and Pound again. Every pony present then looked to the front entrance to find that Pinkie Pie didn’t come alone. In the doorway, carrying a miniature mountain of luggage, was a Earth Pony stallion with a yellow coat, curly brown mane, green eyes, and a cut-in-half grilled cheese sandwich for a cutie mark.

“Pinkie Pie! Cheese Sandwich!” Pumpkin heard her Daddy say, “How was the honeymoon? And, why did you have to take so long?”

In Pumpkin Cake and Pound Cake’s minds, they didn’t think Aunt Pinkie and their new Uncle Cheesy were gone that long. All they knew was that they were gone for a longer time than they normally were. That could mean any unprecedented amount of time to any pony else. In reality, shortly after their wedding, newlyweds Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich went on a six month long honeymoon.

At Daddy’s question Mommy opened her mouth to ask something similar when she gasped and her eyes widened. Pumpkin Cake knew that look on ponies’ faces meant they were surprised by something. But what was Mommy surprised by? Pumpkin then noticed that she and Pound were sitting on something warm and smooth. Now that Pumpkin really thought about it, there was something about Aunt Pinkie that she didn’t notice until now.

Looking down, Pumpkin Cake saw that she and Pound Cake were sitting on Aunt Pinkie’s belly, which had grown big and round. It explained how they were not sitting on her lap. Another thing Pumpkin noticed was how Aunt Pinkie’s belly looked very similar to-

The thought hit Pumpkin Cake like a runaway toy train. Did Aunt Pinkie Pie also have...?

A faint shift in movement in the mass under her rear made that answer more than obvious.

Daddy then fainted.
