Inner shadows
Chapter 1
Previous ChapterNext ChapterIt's been a few days since I had that strange dream and I am still confused as I was when I first woke up from it. Thousands of questions plague my mind as I try to find an understanding to what I had witnessed a few days ago, and I'm not getting any closer to finding an answer. At first I thought I would find an answer by simply thinking of a solution, but soon after It became clear I won't find an answer by just sitting around and making my brain fry from trying to think of a solution...no I need to venture beyond the forest for answers. I sat up from where I was sitting inside my cave and walked out into the forest and started to make my way towards its edge.
By the time I reached the edge of the forest the sun had set and the moon was now overhead. Passing a few more trees I was met with the sight of small hills and mountains off into the distance, a sight I haven't seen in a very long time. It was actually kinda nice to be in a different environment after so long.
After a few moments of taking in the scenery, I started to decide where I should start my search. I remembered a village I had come across my first few weeks being in Equestira, I used to observe the village from time to time and actually managed to get pretty close. Now of course you may be wondering how I got so close without being seen, well I actually have the ability to become invisible, at first I had to really focus to use this ability, but over time I've been able to use it to the point where I barely have to focus at all. Of course there were a few times where I would slip up and would become visible again and some ponies caught a glimpse of me.
I wonder how many of these ponies knew about my existence, I mean sure I've been seen by only about a handful of ponies...but they could have told their friends that they ran into some unknown terrifying monster or demon, and before you know it...rumors start to spread like wildfire. I tried to not let it bother me too much, after all if a large group does manage to spot me, I could just make myself invisible and lose them quickly.
I continued to make my way across the grassy plains, after a short while I came across a narrow path, I remember this, It lead straight to the village. To be honest I don't know how much time has passed since I've been there, but it's felt like a very long time. Anyway enough thinking about the past, time to get there and seek answers. When the town was in my sights I focused a bit and made my body as transparent as I could and proceeded into the village. The streets weren't that busy which was perfect for me, just the local shopkeepers and a few of the towns residence browsing their goods.
Now then, I was looking for information, so my best bet would be to find some sort of library, only problem was I couldn't remember if there was even a library here, and I couldn't just ask one of the locals where to find it. While trying my best to resist slapping myself in the face for not thinking of this earlier, I picked up on a conversation that was going on not too far away. Curious I listened more intently and looked around for the source of the voices, shortly after, I saw two ponies waving at who I could only guess was one of their friends.
She was a lavender unicorn with dark purple mane and tail with a single streak of pink running along both her tail and her mane. Even though most of these ponies are colorful, this one seemed to stand out from the rest, not just her exotic coloring but something else made her stand out as well, just couldn't tell what. At first I couldn't understand what they were talking about, but when the lavender one spoke, she said something that got my attention.
"Sorry girls, I gotta get back to the library, got lots of work and studying to catch up on." She said before trotting off.
I perked up a bit upon hearing what she said, this is perfect, she could lead me right to the library. Silently following the lavender mare, and keeping a bit of distance, she eventually came to what looked like a giant tree-like house, okay how in the hell could I have missed that? The lavender unicorn entered and I caught a glimpse of the inside, shelves with books, just what I was looking for. I quickly made my way to one of the windows that viewed into the entrance, when I looked through the window, the lavender mare was talking to some other creature I never seen before, it was small, purple and had scales, it seemed to be reptilian and possibly a juvenile. The mare had a look of distress in her eyes as she talked to the little purple creature, I wonder what she was worried about?
Well in any case, I would have to wait for night time when their asleep so I can sneak in there and find the information I need. I noticed a small balcony where a large telescope was perched, I climbed up the massive tree and got a closer look at the balcony, there was a door that seem to lead inside. Perfect, when night comes I can use that to get inside...if its unlocked. I rested on a large branch not too far away from the platform made myself visible again since there was a lot of leaves from the tree to cover me from anyone spotting me, and waited for night to arrive.
When night finally arrived I waited for a couple more hours so I was sure they were asleep and climbed down the branch and landed on the platform as quietly as I could. I carefully made my way to the door on the balcony, I grabbed the handle, and gently pulled on the door...to my surprise it was unlocked. The door lead to a small spiral wooden staircase, I crept my way inside and reached the bottom of the stairs, they seem to have led me into a large bedroom. I could hear faint snoring coming from the other end of the room, I looked and saw a bed where I saw the lavender unicorn sleeping and on the floor near the foot of the bed I saw that little purple lizard that was sleeping in what looked like a dog bed.
From the sound of them snoring I guess they were deep in sleep, which was good for me. I found another door that led into a small hallway and then to another set of larger stairs descending to the lower level where the library was. I examined the huge assembly of books, this place had a lot more books than I originally thought. Luckily the books shelves were in alphabetical order, so all I have to look for is the "E" section. When I located the right shelf I scanned the rows of books that were labeled E, but to my dismay I found no books on the elements of harmony. I did however notice one book that seemed out of place, I read the title on the books spine, it read, "Monsters and mythical beasts of equestria." Letting my curiosity getting the better of me I pulled out the book and opened it.
I flipped through the pages and found some of the content interesting, I had seen many creatures in the forest I used to live in, but there were other creatures I didn't even know about. As I continued to flip through the pages I eventually reached the last few pages...on the very last page of the book...I saw something that made me uneasy...there was a picture of....me, I noticed some text beneath the picture that read: Species unknown, origin unknown, gender unknown (presumably male)
this creature has been spotted only an handful of times, it is presumed to be deadly and dangerous, if spotted, contact the royal guard immediately. It is advised that you keep a considerable amount of distance, as this creature could be territorial and may attack on sight.
I closed the book and just stood there, not moving a muscle, feeling lightheaded, I never thought I could feel so much dread and sorrow in one setting. As I continued to stand there like a statue, I lost my grip on the book in my hand, causing it to fall on the wooden floor with a muffled thud. Apparently I wasn't paying attention as much as I should have been, because about twenty seconds after I dropped the book, I heard a loud gasp. I turned and looked towards the stairs and saw the little purple lizard, staring at me in shock and fear.
"Ahhhhh! Twilight!!" He exclaimed, as he ran up the stairs shortly after.
Shit....
