Communism. The idea that everyone is the same. No one is superior and no one shakes in fear.
That was the topic of my senior thesis that I had chosen for my degree, not because I necessarily agreed with any of the ideas that it presented, but mainly because it was something that interested me. I couldn’t believe that there were countries out there that legitimately imposed an authoritarian regime, under the guise that if everyone pooled their collective resources together, their lives would ultimately be enhanced. It was so fascinating to me that there were people out there who supported these rulers, even though citizens of other nations could easily see how much communism was ruining their wellbeing under a false pretense of prosperity. There was no way people could actually be happy giving up their talents to be part of a totally equal society… right?
As I walked through the next aisle of the history section at my local library, I pulled out as many books as I could find on the subject, nearly breaking my arms as I carried them back to my table. I would probably only be able to glance at half of them, especially since I had procrastinated until my deadline was just around the corner, but it wasn’t like I hadn’t done this sort of thing dozens of times throughout my undergraduate experience.
“This political theory degree had better be worth it!” I thought to myself, shuddering at the idea of having spent all this time and energy just to leave college with a piece of paper, a mountain of debt, and a job that paid just above minimum wage. Before I could stress myself out about my future income, though, I quickly slapped my face as hard as I could, no doubt causing everyone around me to give me weird looks, but at least I would be able to focus on my assignment again.
Just as I had picked up my book on socialist ideologies, however, I began to take notice of a group of kids a few tables over. There were six of them in total, four girls and two boys, and each of them were completely different in looks and personalities. Two of the girls had short, pinkish purple hair, although one of them held herself with an almost overzealous confidence whereas the other seemed much more quiet and reserved. Another girl had long, light blue hair, a slim figure and the ability to speak probably two hundred words a minute, and she was sitting next to an extremely large girl with her brunette hair tied in two adorable loops around her ears. The boys seemed pretty similar to each other, seeing as how both of them seemed pretty laid back while allowing the girls to do most of the talking for them, but the one in the middle--the boy with the green hair--had an expression that didn’t match any of the others.
Suddenly, his eyes lifted up to meet mine, making me quickly bury my face back into my book before I seemed like some kind of crazy stalker girl, but that was just until I could sneak a few glances upwards to fulfill my curiosity.
“Yona no like seafood!” the larger girl shouted, eliciting a dirty glare from the librarian. “Yona prefers to have dumplings.”
“Come on, Yona!” replied the burly short-haired girl. “This is our graduation party we’re talking about! We don’t want it to be like some kind of Thursday night dinner!”
“Because seafood is only saved for special occasions?” said the boy with blue hair sarcastically, lifting an eyebrow.
“Oh, I love having seafood! I have it for special occasions, normal occasions, and sometimes when all I need is a snack! I think it would be a great idea to have it! But then again, I also love dumplings. Oh, has anyone brought up pineapples yet? That’s a good idea too!”
“These all sound like good ideas,” chimed in the timid girl with a quiet smile, “but I think we should pick something that we can all agree on.”
“Don’t you think you guys are getting a little ahead of yourselves?!” Suddenly, the other five kids in the group stopped talking due to the green-haired boy’s abrupt outburst. “In case you haven’t noticed, there won’t be any graduation party unless we actually graduate!”
“Relax, dude,” replied the other boy, bringing his arm around his shoulder. “It’s not like any of us are gonna fail.”
“That may be easy for you to say, but I’m this close to getting a failing grade on my next exam! We’re in a library for a reason, and it’s not to talk about party food!”
The other five kids all looked at each other with mixed faces of concern, but with the sudden mood change in the air, it was obvious to see how awkward it would be to stay any longer. “Right,” the burly girl said, breaking the silence. “Sorry, Sandbar. We’ll let you go back to studying.”
After that, the five kids hovering around the boy with green hair began making their way towards the exit, each with a look of concern on their faces. Before he had the chance to look up and catch me spying again, though, I immediately brought my book up to my face, doing the best job I could to make it look like I was actually studying political theory. Hopefully he would buy it.
“If you’re gonna eavesdrop, you shouldn’t make it so obvious.”
Shoot! Busted! Lowering my book down just below my eyelids, I glanced over at the table he was sitting at, just in case he wasn’t actually talking to me, but as I expected, he was glaring daggers at me with intense irritation.
“Sorry!” I exclaimed loud enough for him to hear a few tables over, eliciting another angry look from the librarian. “I didn’t mean to snoop or anything! I just happened to overhear--”
“Don’t you have a book to read? From the looks of it, you’ve got plenty to study for yourself.”
“I do, but--”
“SSSHHHH!!!!!”
I flinched at the sudden angry shushes coming from practically everyone on my side of the library, clearly indicating how loud our conversation was, but I didn’t want to end the conversation there and leave him angry at me forever! Closing my book, I set it aside with the other mountain of text I had collected and made my way over to the aggravated boy, who stared at me unenthusiastically the entire way there. With a bright smile, I took a seat down next to him, hoping that my attempts to make him less angry wouldn’t end up backfiring on me.
“Anyway,” I began in a much more quiet voice, “I didn’t mean to eavesdrop. I just kinda got caught up in hearing the six of you talking.”
“You’re fine,” he replied, looking back down at his book with a depressed expression. Then came the awkward silence where I felt like I should leave him alone, but by the same token, it would probably be even more awkward if I just left without saying anything else, which would have been the opposite effect of what I was going for!
“Soo… You’re… having trouble in school?”
“I guess you could say I’m having a little bit of trouble staying focused.” There was an obvious bite in the way he spoke, but this gave me the perfect way to play into my next move!
“Well, lucky for you, I happened to graduate with honors when I was in high school. What are you having trouble with? Maybe I could help.”
The boy then sighed, dropping his angry act and flipping over the pages of his textbook with total despondence. “I don’t know if there’s anything you can do to help. I’ve got this paper on the philosophy of friendship that I need to have done by tomorrow, but I’m just not getting the subject matter at--”
“Did you say philosophy?!” I asked, cutting him off with a beaming smile. “That’s what I’m studying for my bachelor’s degree! Well, it’s political philosophy to be exact, but how much different can that be from the philosophy of friendship?”
“Really?” The boy’s eyes suddenly lit up. Yes! If I helped this kid graduate, there would be one less person in the world that hated me! “If you could help me out, I’d really appreciate it! It would be so awkward if I was the only one of my friends who didn’t graduate, and Thursday is the last day I can turn this assignment in.”
I cocked my head to the side, tilting my eyebrow. “Wait. I thought you said you had to have this turned in by tomorrow?”
“Yeah… Today’s Wednesday…” I pulled out my phone just to make sure, but of course, right on the screen was the word ‘Wednesday’. Without giving him any explanation, I quickly began packing up my things into my backpack, moving faster than I probably ever had in my life while leaving him to sit there in confusion. “Uhh… You OK?”
“No time! I thought today was Tuesday! I have my senior seminar in twenty minutes!”
The boy continued to stare as I tried stuffing all eight political theory textbooks in my bag at once, which I was too anxious to be embarrassed about. “So does this mean you can’t help me with my paper after all?”
At that moment, I froze up, realizing that I was about to make him hate me all over again if I just abandoned him now. Pulling out a piece of paper from my notebook, I wrote down my address and phone number, placing it down on his book as I went back to packing.
“Here,” I said hurriedly. “Come to my place at seven o’clock tonight. I’ll help you write your report. I’ll see you later!”
“Wait!” Then, just as I had slipped my backpack over my shoulders, I felt his hand grabbing hold of my wrist. His palm was so warm, and although I was a little embarrassed to admit it, I felt a wave of goosebumps arise across my skin. “Can I at least get your name?”
“Oh, right! I’m Starlight Glimmer.”
Finally, I saw him smile for the first time today, giving my heart another unexpected jolt just from how surprisingly cute he was. “My name’s Sandbar. I’ll see you tonight, Starlight.”
“R-r-r-r-right! I’ll see you later, Sandbar!” I didn’t take three steps forward before I ended up tripping over my own shoes, collapsing onto the ground, but looking back up to see Sandbar’s reaction, I noticed him laughing quietly, which was both adorable and embarrassing at the same time. With a huge blush growing across my face, I got up and made my way out the door with as much dignity intact as I could have hoped for.
Hopefully when he saw me later that night, I wouldn’t end up doing anything that would embarrass myself further, but I probably knew that that was almost inevitable for someone like me.
As soon as I got home from my senior seminar, I did as much cleaning as I possibly could. My roommates were all gone on some kind of internship, which meant that without anyone else to judge me, I had allowed the apartment to become a little bit messier than normal. Unfortunately, the apartment was always at least a little messy, so I had to move at twice my normal speed if I wanted to have everything clean by seven, which was in… thirteen minutes?!
I quickly raced to throw all my dirty dishes into the dishwasher, throw away all the trash littering the countertops and wipe the kitchen table of all the crumbs and spaghetti sauce from the past week. I couldn’t imagine why he would go into my bedroom, so I thought a brief runthrough of the kitchen and living room would be plenty, although I did take a second walkthrough of the bathroom, just to make sure there was no chance of him seeing a messy sink. It was a little disheartening knowing that I was doing all this just so that a complete stranger wouldn’t hate my guts, but I wasn’t about to turn him down now after seeing how much he needed my help.
Ding dong!
“J-just a minute!” I called, throwing a bag of trash into the closet and straightening out my pink beanie. I didn’t know how I managed to get the whole apartment cleaned so fast, but somehow, I was able to open the door with a genuine smile, knowing that I could help him with his homework without worrying about a messy environment. “Sandbar! Come in!”
“Thanks for having me, Starlight.” Upon opening my door, a boy wearing jeans and a button down shirt with a logo of three turtles in the corner casually made his way inside, looking all around the room as he did so. “Wow. Do you live here all by yourself?”
Shutting the door behind him, I said, “Kinda. I have two other roommates, but they’re over in Baltimare for an internship.”
“Are they philosophy majors like you?”
“Political science, but yeah. We’re all in the same department. Did you bring that assignment?”
“Yeah!” I then led him to the kitchen table, where he laid down his notes and what little of the assignment he had written so far. “So the assignment is about how to make friends and why they’re so important.”
I tilted my head to the side, raising my eyebrows at what seemed like should have been a fairly easy assignment. “I’m not sure I understand. You just have to write about why friendship matters?”
“Yeah, but I just can’t figure out what to write about! I don’t know why friendship matters. It just… does.”
I raised my finger to my lip, trying to figure a way to help him with his assignment without doing all the work for him. If I just gave him all the answers, he would probably fail when it came time for exams, and if he couldn’t pass that, it sounded like there wasn’t much of a chance of him graduating.
“OK. Let’s start off with this! You have friends right?”
“Yeah,” he replied, looking quizzical as if he weren’t sure his answer was correct. “I’ve got lots of friends, but I have five people who I hang out with the most.”
“Perfect! And why do you hang out with them?”
“I dunno. Because they’re fun people to hang out with, I guess?”
I was beginning to see why he was having so much trouble with this assignment, but I could at least tell that we were on the right track. “Let’s look at it from this perspective: Let’s say that one day, all of your friends suddenly decided that they didn’t want to hang out with you anymore. How would your life be any different?”
“Oh, man. I don’t know how I’d be able to handle that. I’d probably feel like there was something wrong with me, like there was something I did to make everyone hate me. Plus I’d feel really alone.”
“Perfect! And why is it so important that you have those friends with you?”
“Because… having friends means that I’m never alone, like I can be myself and not have to worry about what that person thinks of me!”
“You did it!!” I quickly grabbed both of his hands to celebrate, but once I realized what I was doing, I immediately let go, stuffing my hands back into my lap and turning my head until the redness in my cheeks faded away. “Why don’t you write that down?”
With a newfound excitement, Sandbar grabbed his pencil and began writing down sentences like they were flowing out of his brain. It was so much fun seeing that eager look on his face, like he was legitimately as excited about friendship as I was about my own studies, but even more than that, my heart felt warm knowing that I was able to help take the stress away. Finally, after writing down a few paragraphs, he turned his attention back towards me, making me look away upon realizing that I must have had a silly-looking smile on my face.
“Great! Now I just need to answer one more question. How do I make friends?”
“Well, you can start by calling out the girl spying on you in the library,” I replied with a giggle, but to my unpleasant surprise, he was giving me a look that seemed to contradict what I said.
“Wait. We’re... friends?”
I thought we were! Weren’t we? Did I overstep a boundary somewhere in there? Were we still just acquaintances? Was this just a student/mentor relationship where he never planned to see or talk to me after today? Was I even expecting him to talk to me after tonight?
“I…” I began, unsure of how to respond. “I don’t know.”
Sandbar then sighed, placing his pencil down and swinging his hands behind his head as he leaned back in his chair. “You don’t know either, huh? See, that’s why I’m having so much trouble with this assignment. When do you know when you’re really friends with someone? How do you know that you’ve officially made a friend?”
Wow. This conversation was getting kind of deep. I had never really thought of it before like that, but this high school senior was coming up with philosophical questions like the kind my professors would bring up.
“Maybe…” I began. “...it’s just whenever the two people agree that they’re friends.”
“I was afraid of that. It feels like I have to basically read the other person’s mind or come out and ask them the question.”
“Sounds a lot like dating, huh?” Again, I giggled, but again, to my dismay, he gave me the quizzical look at before. What did I do wrong this time?!
“I wouldn’t know. I’ve never dated someone before.”
It took me a minute for what he said to register in my mind, but once the message sunk in, all I could do was chuckle and exclaim, “What?! You’ve never had a girlfriend?!”
With a sigh, Sandbar slumped in his chair, resting his chin in his hand with his elbow on the table. “Rub it in, why don’t you?”
Suddenly, I realized how rude I must have been acting and stifled my laughter as much as I could. “I’m sorry, Sandbar. I guess it’s just hard for me to believe. I mean, you’re handsome and cute and sweet! You’re telling me that you’ve never had a relationship with anyone, even with all that going for you?”
Sandbar, though, just shrugged his shoulders. “I guess there’s just never really been any girls that have been interested in me.”
Even the way he talked about it so nonchalantly was somehow cute, like he secretly wanted to be with someone, but he would be patient until someone actually admitted that she liked him. He was so pure, so innocent, and for some reason, it drew me in closer, making me wish that I could be the girl that confessed and got to be his first love. There was just one teensy little problem with that...
“So what do you think, Starlight? Is making friends just something that you have to take a guess at unless the two of you come out and make it official?”
...It was too embarrassing.
“Huh? Oh, basically yeah. I mean, unless you and the other person talk about it officially, you basically have to just assume if you’re close enough to consider them your friends. The nice thing about that, though, is that someone can be your friend without you needing to be their friend.”
Sandbar scratched his head. “Sorry. I think I’m a little lost.”
“Let’s take us for instance. I think you’re close enough to be considered my friend. Now, even if you don’t consider me your friend, that doesn’t mean that you can’t be mine.”
“Wait, is this still how romantic relationships work too? Because if it is, I think I have a lot more questions.”
If I were drinking milk right there, it probably would have come out my nose. At this point, I had to cover my face to hide how much I was laughing, even though he could obviously see (and hear) how funny I thought his question was. I really did hope that I wasn’t hurting his feelings, but the way he was so innocent when it came to friendship or anything more than friendship was way too adorable to keep to myself.
“I don’t think that correlates to relationships too much,” I replied, wiping a tear from my eye once my giggle fit calmed down.
“So… What should I do?”
“What do you mean?”
“To get a girlfriend. I have lots of friends, but now that you mention it, I kinda do want to know what it’s like to be more than just friends with someone.”
His question caught me off guard. I had a little bit more experience with dating myself, sure, but there was a reason I was still single. “Well…” I began, trying to maintain my respect as a mentor. “The first thing you need to do is find someone who thinks you’re cute. I think that’s a good first step.”
“But you think I’m cute, don’t you?”
Crap! He called me out!
“Yes, you do have a point there, but you also have to think the other person is cute too.”
“Does beautiful count?”
I must have blinked in rapid fire. Was he saying what I thought he was saying? “Yeah. W-w-why do you ask?”
“Because it’s almost unfair how beautiful you are! Why do you think I noticed you spying on me back at the library? I couldn’t take my eyes off of you! I mean, I don’t know if I would have had the courage to talk to you if I hadn’t caught you looking at me, but…”
By this point, I couldn’t keep track of what he was saying to me anymore. My cheeks were burning so brightly that I felt like steam was going to sizzle out of my ears. My lungs felt like they collapsed in on themselves, forcing my heart to work twice as hard as it normally did. The amount of sweat my body was producing was enough to make me strip naked if there wasn’t a boy right in front of me, but if he kept making me feel good about myself like that, it probably wouldn’t take long before I didn’t mind whether or not he saw me naked.
“So, is there anything else?” he asked, waving his hands in front of my face.
Suddenly, my thoughts snapped back to reality with my body functioning properly again. “Sorry. Anything else for what?”
“For a relationship. Are there any other requirements, or are we dating now?”
There had to be other requirements! There was no way that I could just start dating someone who I met at the library a couple hours earlier! I couldn’t exactly think of any specific reasons right off the top of my head, but there had to be something!
“Well, I don’t know if you want to start dating me quite yet. In a relationship, you have to deal with all the negative sides of the person you’re with too.”
Now it was Sandbar’s turn to laugh, but for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out what I said that was so gosh darn funny. “I’m sorry, Starlight, but I have a hard time believing that you have any negative sides to you. You actually seem kinda perfect”

I slapped my hands over my mouth as fast as I could. What the hell was I even thinking?! I just met this kid! Heck, before just a couple minutes ago, the only thing that I even liked about him was his smile and his face and his hair and his personality and oh sweet Celestia you’ve got to be freaking kidding me! Did I really just fall in love after one stupid day of talking about philosophy and friendship?! Was this all some kind of a sick joke?!
I couldn’t look Sandbar in the eye, not after saying what I did, and certainly not now that I knew that I meant it. Instead I just looked away with my hands over my mouth, awkwardly waiting for nothing in particular to move the topic to something else so that I could try to forget that this whole night ever happened, but as I anxiously waited for him to change the subject, I eventually turned my head to see his face staring at me with a confused expression. Oh, my god! He thought I was a freak, didn’t he?
“You know,” he said softly, making me wish I really didn’t exist right then and there. “I don’t know a whole lot about friendship, as you can probably tell by now. Sure, I know that it exists, and I definitely know that I benefit from it, but to me, it’s kinda like photosynthesis. I don’t understand how it works, but I’m glad that it does. Sorry. Weird tangent. I guess the point that I’m trying to get at here is… I don’t really know how love works either, but if it means that I’m really happy being with you… then I think I love you too.”
Yup, I was dreaming. That had to be the only explanation, but if I really was dreaming, then why did my heart hurt so freaking much? I was feeling so torn, battling between what I had been taught about conventional love, which takes time and nurturing compared to this sudden booming in my chest that seemingly came out of left field.
“So,” he continued, “I hate to keep asking this, but does this mean we’re in a relationship now?”
“Weeeeellll,” I said, still looking for a way to convey to him what a relationship was really supposed to look like. “Here’s the thing about relationships. Sure, it’s important that you’re friends and that you’re physically attracted to each other, but it also means that you have to be comfortable with other aspects too! Like holding hands--or kissing!”
Sandbar chuckled. “What I wouldn’t give to kiss a beautiful girl like you.”

Even though I was sitting down, I could feel my knees getting weaker, making me wish I could fall over and into his arms like a fairytale princess. When I looked into his face, it was like I was looking at the face of my knight in shining armor, here to save me from my life of being single, and it wasn’t until that exact moment when I realized how much I didn’t want to be single anymore. Not only was he a naturally attractive guy, but he was saying literally all the right things, the things that I thought guys only said in romantic comedies.
I was moving forward and not even realizing it. Was I falling off of my chair? No. I had at least one hand supporting me so that I wouldn’t accidentally fall off, but if that were the case, why was my body still moving forward? Not only that, but why was he moving forward? I didn’t understand what was going on. Everything was happening so fast! The only thing that I could think to do was to close my eyes, lean in closer, and finally allow our lips to touch, locking our mouths together as my free hand made its way up the back of his neck.
My heart didn’t know whether to freeze or work at twice its normal pace, but as long as I was conscious enough to keep going, it didn’t matter to me what it did. As our lips travelled across each other’s, he wrapped one hand around my waist while the other ran through my hair, playing with my curls along his fingertips. Unable to keep even one hand on my chair to support myself any longer, I brought both of my hands to his shoulders, gripping his muscles while my mouth ran along his. With the amount of experience he had, I wasn’t sure how far he actually wanted to go, but I knew for sure how far I wanted to go. Without wasting another moment, I slipped my tongue into his mouth, twirling it around his as my lips began to curl upwards into a smile.
“Does this answer your question for you?” I asked in a little more than a whisper.
“I think so,” he said in between the little time I gave him between kisses. “How long do we keep this up?”
I giggled femininely, staring deep into his eyes while the palm of my hand ran across his cheek. “Until we get bored.” Then, without giving the message time to sink in, I pulled him back into another kiss, wrapping my arm around his neck. Just as I was about to lose my balance, however, he grabbed me firmly by the waist, lifted me up and sat my down onto the kitchen table, standing up in front of me so that the two of us could make out more easily.
The way he moved his tongue around mine seemed to put me under a spell, causing me to grab my beanie and throw it onto the floor, completely forgetting that I wasn’t in a fantasy. The minute my beanie left my head, however, Sandbar ran his hands all the way up my hair, tossing it over my shoulder as he gently pressed our mouths closer together. As soon as his mouth left mine, though, it went straight to my neck, placing small, delicate pecks along my skin before nibbling at my ear lobe, and suddenly, kissing was no longer enough for me.
With small breaths of pleasure escaping my lips, I closed my eyes and allowed my hands to do whatever they wanted, but once I opened them again, I saw that they were slowly undoing the buttons to Sandbar’s shirt. Was this too fast? Would he let me know if I was making him uncomfortable? Finally, he took his mouth off of my neck, but even then, when I looked into his eyes, I couldn’t tell exactly what he wanted.
“Is… this OK?” I asked, freezing my hands momentarily.
Sandbar, though, in his traditional, adorable fashion, smiled with a light chuckle. “Yeah. Just let me know if you want me to stop.”
Ohhhhhh, no! That was the final straw! If he was going to wait for me to set a boundary, that just meant that I was going to be riding his dick tonight. Without another moment of hesitation, I forced my mouth back onto his, moving my fingers frantically to pull all of the buttons off of his shirt as quickly as I could. Once the buttons were off, I grabbed his collar and slid his shirt down his arms, soaking up the breathtaking view of his shoulders and abdomen. He wasn’t a Bulk Biceps by any means, but he was so toned that I could see the curvature of every muscle in his body in high definition.
With his mouth returning to my neck, I slowly ran my fingers up his smooth chest, grabbing hold of the nook between his neck and shoulders as my body began to take control over my mind. Suddenly, though, with my eyes closed in the fervor of my hormones, I began to feel a tugging at my own shoulders, and opening my eyes, I saw him gently pulling my vest down my arms. By total reflex alone, I immediately crossed my arms and grabbed hold of the fabric, stopping him from moving and causing him to give me a look of concern.
Good job, Starlight. Way to kill the mood.
“Sorry,” he said. “Is this going too far?”
Even when I was beating myself up internally, just the sound of his voice was enough to put me at ease and bring a smile back to my face. “No,” I whispered. “Keep going.”
He looked like he was still hesitant at first, but once I wrapped my arms around his neck, placing the biggest kiss on his lips that I could, he didn’t waste a second in bringing my vest down my shoulders. Of course, I had to let go of his neck in order for him to get the vest all the way off my arms, but that gave me the perfect opportunity to cross my arms, grab the hem of my t-shirt and pull it off my torso, giving him a prime view of my boobs just barely shielded by a white bra. As I worked at yanking the shirt down my arms, though, I noticed how much he was staring at my breasts, wearing a face that was both stupid and adorable.
“You can touch ‘em if you want,” I said, leaning back on the table to accentuate my chest.
“Really? You don’t mind?”
“Sure. Pluswe’reprobablygoingtobedoingmorethanthatanyway.”
“What was that?”
“Nothing! Just talking to myself.”
Sandbar looked like he was about to press onward, but once I pushed my shoulders together, squeezing my breasts to emphasize the crease of my cleavage, his expression suddenly went blank. The next thing I knew, I was cocking my head back, breathing heavily at the feeling of his hand massaging my chest while his lips trailed across the skin above my bra.
