Chapters This story is dedicated to my Mother. She who taught me how to read and have a love for music, thanks Mom.
“Grandpa!” Two foals came running into the living room. In this room was an old unicorn stallion sitting in a chair and was reading a newspaper near the fireplace. Putting the newspaper down, the stallion smiled at the two.
“Ah my little munchkins. What brings you to this fine room, is it supper time already?” Asked the stallion.
“Not supper time yet, but Momma said you seemed lonely and told us to tell you to tell us a story, THE story.” Said one of the foals, bouncing up and down, clearly excited.
“The one of your life, the big war and such, the one you have neverrrrr told us.” Said the other one who was smiling and also bouncing.
“Ah that story, the story of my past, and the adventures I had, and the tragedies I faced. Well, that is a very long story, and I doubt your mother would appreciate me keeping you foals in here for such a long time as I tell you all of it.” Responded the stallion seeing them excited. “Plus, I think you two are still a little too young to hear this particular story.”
“Well Momma said we were old enough, plus you have to tell us sometime, or we will die of anticipation. We hear hints and see dark expressions from others whenever we ask.” Said them both. Something told the stallion that they had rehearsed this for a long time now and would not budge on this subject.
“Well I definitely won’t be able to tell you the whole story today, but how about this, I will tell it in parts. That way you are not here forever, for it truly is a long story. But you must promise me this, no matter what, where I stop, I stop, even if it is a cliff hanger. There is a reason why this story is important, and each part is as important as the last.”
The two foals could not contain their excitement, “YAAAAAAAAY!” They shouted. After settling them down, the stallion decided to go to the kitchen and get something to drink before starting the story.
“After all, what good is a storyteller if he is parched? Find a comfortable spot or chair near the fire, and I won’t be gone for long.” He said to them, winked, and left the room.
After pulling up some fluffy pillows, the two immediately started whispering about what wonderful things they were going to hear. “Ava, are you excited?” Asked the older.
“Well Orin, I think we going to hear and learn everything, and I am sure this is quite the story. Why else would Momma and Dad keep it from us?” And even quieter she said, “do you think he will tell us of his scars, and how he got them?”
“I am sure they relate to his story, but I do not think anypony could have scars like that without a cool story.” Replied Orin. For they had been strictly charged not to talk about the scars on their Grandpa by their Mother. Their Mother reasoned that the best way to start a relationship with their Grandpa was to put the past behind. Building new memories in the present was the best way, instead of rehashing the past.
After settling down, the two started to hear voices slowly coming toward the room. “Are you sure they are old enough? You were close to their age, and when I told you, you had nightmares for weeks.”
“Well Dad, they are at least two years older than I was when you told me. They are more mature, and they should know now. Their curiosity has gotten them in trouble before you know. Who else to hear the story from anypony except you? I think it’s time, and they do too.” With that, the foal’s mother and the old stallion entered the room.
“Very well, and you are sure you do not want to stay for the story?” Asked the stallion.
“I have heard the story so many times. I think that if I stayed, I might spoil something while they are listening.” Replied the two foals’ mother. “And, it will be a journey for them too you know.”
“Oh, but you have not heard this version of the story.” Goaded the stallion.
“Oh you say that every time, and every time it is different. I do not know how you manage it, but you still make the story fascinating to hear. But alas, if I stay here and listen too, who will make supper for all of us?” And with that, she left the room.
Turning towards the two, the stallion asked, “are two you ready?” With a resounding “YES!” The stallion returned to his spot near the fireplace, putting away the newspaper that he was reading. Sitting down, he starred at the fire, mulling over what to say. The foals waited in anticipation. What was he going to say?
“There are a few things you must understand first. You may be familiar with how certain events many years ago happened. When Nightmare Moon returned to exact her revenge on Equestria since her sister, Celestia, banished her to the moon. You may also remember that Twilight Sparkle read in the book of prophecies and predictions that Nightmare would return. Twilight immediately went to her mentor and told Celestia that Nightmare would return, yet Celestia did not pay any attention to her warning. Because of this, Celestia was captured. Now Twilight and her friends had to find the elements of harmony in order to defeat Nightmare moon. They traveled to the tree of harmony, going through many obstacles, and finally reaching their destination. Except, right after they had obtained the elements, Nightmare shows up and destroys them right in front of their eyes. That is where our story begins.”
“But Grandpa, we already know how this story ends, what does this have to do with anything?” Asked Orin.
“Ah well that might have been true when it happened in this past. Peace was restored and Nightmare Moon lost as Twilight and her friends defeated her. That’s what you were taught had happened. Except that, in my time, Nightmare Moon won.”

Edit. A little too much foreshadowing and spoilers in this one. Made it sound better to read and have things flow.
Tears started to form in her eyes as Twilight and her friends stared at the now shattered Elements of harmony. This was supposed to work! How could Nightmare Moon win? The book of Prophesies and Predictions said that she and her friends would defeat her! How could she have been so terribly wrong?
All these thoughts and more were bubbling inside of her head, but before Twilight could say anything, Nightmare Moon spoke. “I am victorious! Eternal moon will reign supreme in this land! All will bow before my majesty!”
“Not if I can hel-” but before Twilight could finish Nightmare Moon interrupted her.
“SILENCE!” Nightmare Moon said, and then conjured jail cells for Twilight and her friends, imprisoning them and gagging them, so they could not speak. After doing so, Nightmare Moon turned around and summoned Celestia from her prison.
“These were the best defense against me? Six weaklings that were easily defeated. I see how you have placed great faith in your student. Watch now, as I corrupt her with my dark energy. I shall give her a spirit of darkness to possess her, and her abilities and use her against you!” Said Nightmare Moon to Celestia. And promptly did so. Letting loose some of her magic to seep into Twilight.
If Twilight was not wearing a gag, her screams would have been heard for miles around. Her friends slumped in defeat as they saw their friend go through a terrible transformation. After the process was complete, Twilight was almost unrecognizable. With a dark purple skin tone and dark blue mane and tail, with little stars ingrained in the tail. She was released from her prison and stood proudly by Nightmare Moon.
“Don’t you see Celestia, I have won, your reign comes to an end. There will be no one who can oppose me now.” Said Nightmare Moon. “Now then, let us get a bigger audience!” So then Nightmare Moon teleported all eight of them, and positioned them in the middle of Canterlot square for all to see and addressed all who were around.
“Behold! Your ruler, princess Celestia and her heroes, defeated and caged. Celestia is weak, unable to combat my power. We must have a strong ruler to lead our nation. Therefore, I impose myself as the new ruler, Queen Nightmare Moon.” After saying this, Nightmare Moon turned around and addressed her captives.
“Because of this new age, all must start anew with me. All shall have a name that has been renewed by the moon! Come, the one I made new, kneel before your Queen. You shall be the beginning of a new empire.” Said Nightmare Moon. “You no longer shall go by your previous name, but rise as Dawn Lighter, as one who lights the way to a new era of eternal night.”
After doing this, Nightmare Moon addressed the now growing crowd once again. “We must rid ourselves of our past, so that we may be in unity, as one race, under me. Therefore, we must get rid of the weak, Celestia shall reign no more, and is therefore useless to me.” After saying this, Nightmare Moon position Celestia, helplessly, in front of all who were present.
After doing Nightmare Moon conjured a deep and dark spell, and unleashed it onto Celestia, for all to see. Nightmare Moon had turned Celestia into stone! Then she decapitated the now statue Celestia in front of all of them. There was a collective gasp among the crowd as such a brutal thing had never been done before.
“BEHOLD! Let this be an example to all that I will not hold back on any punishments. And this is what will happen to any who oppose me!” And to exaggerate her point, Nightmare Moon crushed Celestia’s head, turning it into dust.
A single tear ran down the newly named Dawn Lighter. Sensing her weakness, Nightmare Moon turned around and hissed at Dawn Lighter. “Learn to control your host, or she will control you. I will not deal with any insubordination. Now then, let it be known among all the land that all will be renamed. Come to Canterlot Castle for the census.” And with that, Nightmare Moon flew off to the castle, while Dawn Lighter was running behind.
The five remaining friends huddled around the now decapitated statue. Celestia had been all they had known. What was life going to be like without her? Twilight had been their friend, their leader. Who would she be now? Would they still be friends? Or was she going to rule over them?
“Do we even bury her?” Asked Fluttershy.
“I do not think we can.” Said Applejack.
“Rarity, why did you not do anything?” Said Rainbow Dash angrily. “You could have freed us, then we could have gotten Nightmare Moon when she was focused on Twilight.” This outburst from Rainbow Dash was surprising to all of them, completely out of character.
“I-I did not think I could do anything, it all happened so fast that it did not cross my mind to resist.” Replied Rarity.
“Rainbow Dash that was uncalled for, Rarity was just as surprised as the rest of us.” Defended Applejack.
“Yeah well now we lost Twilight and Celestia today, and you were the only one who could have stopped them, since you are the only other unicorn in our group. In fact, I do not think we are a group anymore, now that Twilight has gone over to the evil side.” Said Rainbow Dash.
“You don’t know that, you saw her resist her possessor, there is still hope.” Said Fluttershy.
“Hope? HOPE?! Hope was lost when Celestia was killed, murdered in front of everypony to see. The elements and Twilight were our best chance against Nightmare Moon. Now both are gone. Don’t give me any hope. We lost today, and I don’t think it will get any better, in fact I think it will get worse, much worse from now on.” Said Rainbow Dash. She then decided to fly off in anger.
“Rainbow Dash come back! We need to stay together! There is hope, there will always be hope!” Yelled Fluttershy.
“I-I could have done something? Could I have stopped this if I tried to? Is this all my fault?” questioned Rarity as tears started to fall.
Fluttershy turned around to comfort her friend, saying “no, no it is not your fault, there was nothing we could do to stop Nightmare Moon. Don’t blame yourself today Rarity.”
“But I could have tried to do something, anything. This is all my fault, I should have freed us when Nightmare Moon was focused on Twilight, now Celestia is dead and its all MY FAULT!” Cried Rarity running away.
“Rarity come back! If we don’t stay together, we-we.” But before Fluttershy could finished, Applejack interrupted her.
“I don’t think we are a group anymore Fluttershy, I think we lost today, badly, and I don’t see a way we can fix it.” Said Applejack.
“But what are we to do then? There must be something we can do! Pinkie Pie, what do you think? You have been awfully quiet this entire time.” Said Fluttershy, turning to Pinkie Pie.
“Dead, Celestia dead…” Said Pinkie Pie, clearly not taking it well as she then started to shiver.
“Oh Pinkie Pie it’s OK. You must be strong; things are going to be different now, but we will be OK.” Said Fluttershy trying to soothe her.
Applejack started to look up, seeing the moon still in place. “But will things be OK Fluttershy? Will they? What will we do now?” She said.
“I do not know Applejack.” Said Fluttershy, sighing, as a final tear fell from her face. “I do not know.”

The end- Just kidding! I am just getting started, sorry for the long delay in getting the first chapter as writing is tough. Hopefully these responses are not too out of character, but I am trying to work on making arcs for most of the main six, and this seemed to be the best way. Anyways enjoy!
Edit. Touched up a few pieces that helped make sense what the characters say.
It was such a strange feeling, like staring out a window. Twilight could see everything that her eyes could see, but she was not in control of them. She could feel another presence with her inside her head, that presence was in control. It was the one making the actions. It moved her eyes when it wanted to, it walked where it wanted to go. She could also sense it reading her memories, like a book. After a while, she reached out to try to communicate with it. At first it pulled away, but then decided to push her instead. Overwhelming her with a feeling of weakness. Then it opened itself up to her.
“You are a strange pony .” It said, if you would call thoughts speech. “My master picked well, you were the brightest among your group, therefore you were the perfect candidate for the possession .”
“What are you?” Responded Twilight in her mind.
“I am a manifestation of Queen Nightmare Moon. Separate, but connected. I am my own individual, but also linked in some way to Nightmare Moon. And my Queen has named me Dawn Lighter .” Responded Dawn Lighter. “You should feel grateful for being the first of a new empire.”
“So, your kind of like a parasite, but also like a hive minded individual.” Reasoned Twilight.
“Call it what you will, just know that I am in control .” Said Dawn Lighter.
“And Celestia is dead, killed by Nightmare Moon. Therefore, you are also responsible for her death. She will need to be avenged. Somehow, I will have to break free from your control. Defeat you, and-” Said Twilight.
“Enough .” Interjected Dawn Lighter. “Don’t you see? You are powerless, and your friends are weak. They are nothing without you. You have no hope. I do not need you, but I need your power, yet I cannot take that power for myself since your soul is connected to it. Otherwise your consciousness would have been disposed of. Anyway, the Queen is talking .”
“Have a better grip of your host now? Good.” Said Nightmare Moon. “My sister’s subjects have increased since my banishment. Therefore, I think I will have a huge census of all Equestrians. Every Earth pony, Pegasus and Unicorn. Young and old, mare and stallion shall be accounted for in my new empire. All will be given a new name. A name touched by the moon.”
“A wonderful idea my Queen. How about we create, say, a tablet that these ponies must always carry with them. Some way of recognition, so that we may never lose track of them. We should always be somewhat aware of what is happening in this land. And I think this would help us greatly.” Said Dawn Lighter.
“A wonderful idea. We should also wipe all their previous names, say a spell that makes you forget your own name and everypony else’s. Yet keep a few distinct names, such as Celestia so that they she will be kept as an example to all.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“When should we start this process my Queen?” Said Dawn Lighter.
“As soon as possible, but I think we need an individual to keep an account of all the names and the number of all the individuals in this kingdom.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“I think I already have an idea of who that may be. His name is Spike, in fact, he is an assistant to my host. Let me summon him here.” Said Dawn Lighter.
Pausing for a moment, Dawn Lighter retrieved the memory of the teleportation spell and casted it. In a moment, a confused dragon stood in front of the two.
“Woah Twilight, what happened to you, and what is she doing here?” Said Spike.
“Listen closely Spike and listen well. As I do not like to repeat myself. Celestia is dead, and I am the new ruler. As my first action as Queen is to rename all my equestrian subjects. A name touched by the moon.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“And what do you need me for?” Gulped Spike, a little shaken by the news.
“We need you to keep a record of all the ponies, their occupations and new names.” Said Twilight.
“But, why have this census at all?” Said Spike.
“Well Spike,” said Nightmare Moon. “I want to assess the kingdom my sister has been governing. What advances we have made. Our allies and our enemies. Ignorance is a dangerous game to play when you are a ruler. Now, I do not need all my motives questioned. I will prepare you a way to catalog all my subjects. Their names and occupations. Come, there is much work to be done.”
It took nearly a month of renaming and categorizing all the ponies. Many grumbled, but fearing punishment, only did it under their breath. For others, they accepted it, hoping that regardless of what happens, things will turn out for the best.
One of these hopers was Fluttershy. She knew that when hard times fall, she would stick with her friends. No matter what would or could happen, she would stay true to them. So when it came to her turn to be processed, she was a little anxious. She knew that her name was special, and that everypony else was too. Yet she knew that if she refused, they wouldn’t be nice to her, and it is better to make friends then enemies.
“Please state your name, and your occupation.” Said Nightmare Moon. Sitting at a desk with Spike next to her, writing down everything. There were piles of paper near her and Spike. They were in the castle, in a private chamber that Celestia had used to study.
Taking a deep breath, Fluttershy began. “Hel-hello, my name is Fluttershy, and my occupation is animal caretaker”
Taking a moment for Spike to write it down, Nightmare Moon asked. “And why were you named Fluttershy?”
“W-well I am normally fine when I am with animals, but ponies can surprise me, and I don’t like being surprised. So I stay mostly quiet and shy around ponies.” Said Fluttershy.
Thinking for a moment, Nightmare Moon said, “well, I am sorry to hear that. Things are changing around here, and you will have to overcome your shyness eventually. Therefore, your new name shall be Flutter Moon, since your shyness will be no more.”
Nightmare Moon told Fluttershy to come closer to the desk. “I am going to put a spell on your, something that will do many things. One of these things is going to make you forget your name, and everypony else’s name. And another thing it will do is make you more adaptable to the moon.” Said Nightmare Moon.
Taking another moment, Nightmare Moon put the spell on Fluttershy. “Woah.” Said Fluttershy. “Everything feels weird. How will the spell stay active?”
“The moon shall rejuvenate it daily.” Said Nightmare Moon, also taking a blank tablet and engraved “Flutter Moon” on it with her magic. “This is your identification tablet, keep it with you so that we may identify you. Also, your new name is Flutter Moon, since your old one is no more. You may leave now.”
“Wait, what was your names again?” Asked Flutter Moon.
“This is Spike, my assistant, and my name is Nightmare Moon my dear, your queen.” Said Nightmare Moon, smiling.

Sorry for a long time without update, recently got back from my trip to Asia. Thankfully was able to write this story while I was over there. I know this one is a little long, but it is needed. Enjoy!
Edit: Added some curves to the words so readers could be able to understand what is being said, in the mind.
Chapter [3] Sparks and backlash.
After all the proceedings were finished, Nightmare Moon had a giant banquet with those who stuck around after the renaming process. For the nobles, she had a separate meeting.
“I have called this meeting because I want unity among us and my subjects. If we are against each other, there will be no peace. Therefore, I want all the royalty and nobles to swear allegiance to me. If you cannot swear allegiance, then you will be stripped of your nobility or royalty, but you may keep your wealth. Money is not something that I squander about. And it is not something that should divide us.” Said Nightmare Moon. “Now then, is there any who would like to relinquish their power?”
“I will, I do not think I will be able to have a clear conscious if I am ruled by you. Princess Celestia was and will always be a better ruler than you. I will never bow to you.” Said princess Moon Melody, previously known as princess Cadence. “What do you plan on doing now, now that you have renamed everypony?”
“Excellent question, Moon Melody. I plan on advancing our kind. However that might be, but in order for me to do that, I must have no resistance. You are dismissed from here, as you are no longer princess Moon Melody.” Said Nightmare Moon.
After Moon Melody left the room in tears, Nightmare Moon said, “Now then, any others?”
“Me too.” Said Blue Moon, previously known as Blue Blood. “Me and Celestia may not have been the best of buddies, but I still supported her. Because of your brutal murder of her, I cannot stand behind you.”
“Then go, get out of here. Your attitude here will not help our cause anyway. I do not need the royal family. In fact, I might be better off without it.” Said Nightmare Moon, dismissing Blue Moon as well. “Now then, any others? Speak now, or forever hold your peace” Nightmare Moon was obviously angry, none of the others said anything.
After leaving the room, Blue Moon ran to catch up with Moon Melody. “Hey,” he said. “Wait up. That was brave of you, to defy Queen Nightmare Moon. I did it too, but I think you are a more popular candidate.”
“Thank you, though I do not think it will amount to much. What are we going to do about her? What are we going to do now?” Said Moon Melody.
“Probably live our lives normally, just without being royalty.” Said Blue Moon.
“I do not know Blue Moon, without Celestia’s guidance, I feel broken inside. She was always available for me, and now that she is gone…” Said Moon Melody as tears started to form again.
Meanwhile, a few hallways away, Shining Moon, previously known as Shining Armor, was looking for and bumped into Dawn Lighter. “Hey, what happened? I haven’t seen you since you were with your friends. Then I see you with Queen Nightmare Moon and then the renaming process, and then I haven’t seen you after that. What happened to you? Why do you look so different?” Asked Shining Moon.
“Oh, you must be Shining Moon. My host’s brother. Well, I have no use of you as Captain of the royal guard, or any guard for that matter. Queen Nightmare Moon will be imposing a new guard, of her own creation. She does not yet trust ponies to guard her.” Said Dawn Lighter.
“But, what will I do? What job will I have? I met up with Moon Melody after the renaming, is it true that Celestia is dead?” Said Shining Moon.
“You may do whatever you like, but we do not need your services anymore.” Said Dawn Lighter curtly.
“What happened to you?” Asked Shining Moon again. “You seem cold and unhappy, what happened to my sister?”
“Your sister is dead. I now possess her body and her powers. Now, begone from my presence, I do not want you pestering me all day. I have a kingdom to help run.” Said Dawn Lighter, brushing past him, and leaving the hall.
“Dead? How could that be? No, she cannot be gone, she has to be in there, fighting for control.” Said Shining Moon, slumping down against a wall.
Shining Moon’s ears perked up when he heard some sniffling coming down from another hallway, and Moon Melody and Blue Moon were walking down a hallway right across from him.
“Moon Melody, what is wrong?!” Said Shining Moon, catching up to them.
“It is Nightmare Moon; she has relinquished me and Blue Moon’s royalty.” Said Moon Melody.
“We get to keep our money, but not our power.” Said Blue Moon.
“Yeah well I just lost my job as Royal guard. I spoke with Dawn Lighter, and she told me that I am not needed anymore.” Said Shining Moon. “What happened to her? She told me that my sister is dead, and that she now ‘possesses’ my sister’s body, but how could that be?”
“Well I was told that, when Nightmare Moon was victorious in defeating your sister and her friends, she transferred some of her power into your sister, corrupting her, and making her one of her own.” Said Blue Moon.
“That’s terrible!” Said Moon Melody.
“I know,” Said Blue Moon. “I almost did not believe it until I saw her in her transformed body. She seems much more powerful, and much more threatening. I would not want to pick a fight with her now.”
“Maybe we should.” Said Shining Moon. “Maybe the only way to save my sister is to fight back against Nightmare Moon’s tyranny.”
“Like start a revolution, or a rebellion?” Said Moon Melody.
“Yeah, who else? I am sure there are many who liked the old days with Celestia in charge.” Said Shining Moon. “In fact, if the old royal guard is disbanded, I think I could gather them up and start a revolt. I haven’t seen any of Nightmare Moon’s new ‘guards’ and now is probably the best time to strike.”
“Whoa whoa, slow down. Let us be logical here. Nightmare Moon is already on guard, and your sister is always near her as well. You are talking about treason. Starting a rebellion is a dangerous game. We should step back a little and collect our forces. If we just outright oppose Nightmare Moon, we will be squashed like a bug. We need to be smart about what we are doing.” Said Blue Moon.
“You a right, I was getting a little ahead of myself. We need to be able to maximize our potential, and not waste the act of surprise. In fact, I am sure we could get the remaining five back together and talk with them about this.” Said Shining Moon.
“Good idea, though I doubt they will be thrilled about this plan.” Said Moon Melody.

Chapter [4] Plans and tears.
“Ludicrous, we have no chance at stopping them. It’s suicide.” Said Moon Dasher, previously known as Rainbow Dash, who was pacing back and forth inside of Flutter Moon’s cottage. The remaining five, plus Moon Melody, Shining Moon and Blue Moon were all meeting there in Flutter Moon’s living room, since it seemed the best location that was isolated from prying ears.
“No one is asking you to die for the cause, just that you help us.” Said Blue Moon. “We could use all the help we could get, each of you can do something for our cause.”
“Do something? I think we have done enough. There is nothing we can do to stop Nightmare Moon now.” Said Moon Dasher.
“Who made you in charge?” Said Apple Moon, previously known as Applejack.
“Well naturally, Dawn Lighter was, but now she’s gone over to the dark side. Moon Pie can’t hold herself together very well anymore. Moon Sparkle can’t stop blaming herself, which she should. Flutter Moon is too soft, and you have no experience leading a group. So therefore, I should be the new leader.” Said Moon Dasher.
“We can decide who the leader of our cause is later, for now we need to be united against our common enemy.” Said Shining Moon.
“Who are you again? We didn’t even know you existed until you brought us all together. How are we supposed to believe who you say you are?” Questioned Moon Dasher.
“Enough! I trust him Moon Dasher, and he’s right. We need to stand against Nightmare Moon and defeat her if we ever have a chance of getting Dawn Lighter back. And maybe our names too.” The last part, Flutter Moon said quietly, more to herself than any in the room. “Maybe if you stopped picking a fight with everypony you see, we can start planning.”
“I need some air; I’ll be back in a few minutes.” Said Moon Sparkle leaving the cottage.
“I’ll go with her, and make sure she doesn’t do anything drastic.” Said Moon Melody.
Moon Melody found Moon Sparkle sitting on a bridge over a river, crying. “Hey, mind if I sit with you?” She said. With a simple nod of approval, Moon Melody sat down next to her, both watching the water flow past them.
They sat there for a few minutes, until Moon Melody broke the silence again, “I don’t blame you, you know. We were all caught off guard. Don’t blame yourself for the what if’s and maybes. Who could have expected these events to unfold? What if I had pressed for Celestia to make more securities in place for the return of her sister? What if I had gone with your group to help find the elements? So many alternatives that I could have chosen.”
“How did you deal with it?” Said Moon Sparkle.
“I didn’t, I just moved on. You cannot change the past, so if you always have regret, then you can never move on with the present.” Said Moon Melody.
“I guess that makes sense, but Moon Dasher’s words dug deep into my heart. I guess a part of me believed those words, and that I had lost the chance for us to go back.” Said Moon Sparkle.
“Well if there is any consolation, a wise pony once told me ‘No reserve, no retreats, and no regrets.’ Do you know who that was?” Said Moon Melody.
“Celestia?” Said Moon Sparkle.
“Yep, I think the best way to move on from Celestia’s death, is to think of all the good moments we had with her. That way we can honor her with our memories.” Continued Moon Melody.
“Thanks Moon Melody, you don’t know how much I needed to hear that. I think we can head back now.” Said Moon Sparkle.
“That’s why I think we will win. If we stand strong together, we can defeat any evil that may come upon us. We have a chance to take back the throne, we just need to unite against Nightmare Moon.” Said Moon Melody, as they started to head back.
On their way back however, they were greeted by Shining Moon, who was running to meet them. “Hey, what’s wrong?” said Moon Melody
“You know Spike? The baby dragon assistant that Dawn Lighter had. He came to us, and he says he has big news, news that might provide crucial information for us. Blue Moon sent me to fetch you two.” Said Shining Moon, a little out of breath.
“Well what are we waiting for? Best not to have a dragon waiting on us.” Said Moon Sparkle.
As all three arrived back at the cottage, they all stopped by the kitchen to get a few glasses of water. Returning to the Living room, there sat Spike, constantly fidgeting with his claws. “I already told you, Nightmare Moon wiped my memory too. I don’t know your previous names and I don’t know why she didn’t rename me. I think it was because I wasn’t a pony or something, everything is still kinda fuzzy.” He said.
“Then how come you said you overheard a conversation that you weren’t supposed to hear? How do you know that what you know is not fabricated?” Questioned Blue Moon.
“Because I didn’t even know that you were thinking of starting a rebellion before I got here. I simply came because I knew that Flutter Moon was here, and that maybe her friends too.” Said Spike.
“I don’t trust you, but Flutter Moon does, so I think we will all hear you out.” Said Blue Moon. Looking up, he noticed that Shining Moon, Moon Melody and Moon Sparkle had returned.
“Oh good, you got them. I don’t know if you heard, but Spike here says that he overheard a conversation that took place between Nightmare Moon and Dawn Lighter.”
“Nightmare Moon and I were working on some paperwork, when Dawn Lighter busted in and asked to speak privately with Nightmare Moon. Something about the ‘Book of Prophecies and Predictions’ or something like that. That immediately got Nightmare Moon’s attention and she dismissed me.” Said Spike.
“Wait the Book of Prophecies and Predictions? The very book that Prophesied that Nightmare Moon would return and that in order to defeat her, we had to get the elements of harmony?” Said Apple Moon.
“I guess that one, but Dawn Lighter said that something new had happened.”
“Something new? What do you mean?” Said Shining Moon.
“I think she meant a new Prophecy.”

Chapter [5] Intriguing books and memories.
Dawn Lighter was pacing back and forth within the library in Canterlot Castle. On the outside, she might have been seen mumbling to herself, but on the inside, she was having a heated debate with her host, Twilight Sparkle.
“There is nothing that you can do to persuade me to relinquish my power over you. I am pretty sure we have already had this conversation. There is nothing else for us to argue about. The case is closed.” Said DL
“I know that, I just want something to do. I don’t want you to relinquish all control. I have been cramped in my mind, and want to stretch my legs, my actual legs. Maybe I could read a book? Or just the fact that I can move around sometimes. If I cannot, then I think I will go stir crazy.” Said Twilight. “Plus, if you allow me to get brief control, then I promise to be complacent, and will not nag you about anything.”
“Fine, you can walk around, and read one book. But after that, that’s it for a long time. Don’t get any ideas about trying to escape, I can immediately take control again. Also, I can read your mind, since I have access to your memories. ” Said DL.
“Thank you thank you thank you. I promise I will not try anything.” Said Twilight, a little overzealous.
“Do not get used to this treatment. This will not become a regular activity .” Said DL.
It took a moment for it to hit Twilight, but she could sense the return of the ability to move, the ability to feel. The overwhelming return of her senses caught Twilight off guard. She cried out with joy, the ability to talk, to voice one’s thoughts was something she had taken for granted. Now, with that ability restored she could finally speak.
“Wow” was all she could say. Yet, she knew that her time in control was limited. She looked around the library. It seemed like forever ago that she used to study here when she was under Celestia. The thought saddened her, but she knew that she had to move on. Moving over to a bookshelf, Twilight looked over all the books that were on it. None of them seemed interesting or could satisfy what she wanted. She turned to her consciousness that was inside her.
“I know this is probably going to be annoying to ask, but could we by chance… return to my tree house? There I have my collection of some of my favorite books.” Said Twilight.
“Fine, but I think I will perform the teleportation spell. Wouldn’t be smart of me if I let you do it, you could teleport us anywhere .” Said DL.
After a quick moment as DL went to retrieve the teleportation spell from Twilight’s memories, she envisioned the tree house, and casted the spell. Instantly they were inside. Twilight expecting to feel the backlash of performing such an extraneous spell over a long distance, was surprised by the power she now possessed.
“Whoa, I normally feel some fatigue after performing a spell like that. What happened?”
“I have some of Queen Nightmare Moon’s power within me, your power has been advanced by her power as an alicorn.” Said DL. “Now, go find your book, I think while you are reading, I will work on memorizing spells. That way I will not have to always sift through your memories to retrieve the correct spell .”
“Thank you, if all things are the same as I left them, then I know exactly where the book is that I have in mind.” Said Twilight.
She picked a book that she always had read whenever she wanted to calm down. It was an adventurous one about a valiant unicorn, a dragon, and a princess held in a castle. Twilight remembered reading the story to Spike whenever he was anxious or needed something to fall asleep too. They both had shared a chuckle about how the dragon was depicted.
As she was getting closer to the end of the book, she had always wondered why the main protagonist always went with the hardest decisions. If she was in his hooves, she would have outright just faced the dragon instead of doing side quests. Yet before she could finish the book, DL talked with her.
“I was going through your memories, and I came upon the memory of you reading about Nightmare Moon. It was in the book of Prophecies and Predictions. I would like to see this book .” Said DL.
“Sure. I already know the ending of my book. He gets the mare, saves the world, and looks cool while he does it. I think I left it here somewhere in my study.” Said Twilight, intrigued by the question.
As Twilight went to retrieve the book, she could feel the presence of DL. It was still very strange for her, like somepony always looking over her shoulder. DL still allowed control but was on the ready to take back control.
Twilight looked around for a while, before remembering she always alphabetized her books, and went to look for the P section. Sure enough, there it was, sitting plainly. She went to grab it, a little apprehensive as she lifted it to a nearby stand that was designed to read books. As she placed the book down, something felt different about it, but for some reason she could not place the feeling.
“I want to see the Prophecy of the return of Nightmare Moon. How could it have known that the Queen would return? What else does it say on the matter?” All these questions and more were asked by DL as Twilight flipped through the pages.
“Here it is. ‘The rise and fall of Nightmare Moon. Nightmare Moon will return on the longest day of a thousand years. And the stars will aid in her escape and she will bring about nighttime eternal. As she succeeds, she shall cast her fate. As a new Prophecy called-’” but before Twilight could finish, she was cut off from the flow of the sentences, the flow of the world. She was sent back to depths of her mind.
“NO!” She yelled, banging her hooves against the walls of her mind. “I want to see the new Prophecy! What is going on? Why did you cut me off!? NOOO…!” She screamed trailing off and then curled up into a ball, crying. “I just want things to go back to normal. I just want to see my friends. The friends I made.”

Chapter [6] Hideaways and future developments.
Having re-read the new prophecy, Dawn Lighter looked around, searching the room for something to hold the book. Locating a saddlebag, she also looked around to see if anypony had seen her, but the tree house was empty. Grabbing the saddlebag, she teleported back to the castle, and went searching for Queen Nightmare Moon.
Stopping for a moment, Dawn Lighter went to establish a connection with Nightmare Moon. She found her working with Spike on some important documents. Creating a clear direction, DL went the most direct route, crisscrossing through the many hallways and rooms. Finally arriving at the correct room, DL busted in, without knocking.
“Queen Nightmare Moon, if I could have your attention please.” She said
“Not now Dawn Lighter, I have some important documents that I need to get finished.” Said Nightmare Moon without even looking up.
“I think you should divert your attention to what I have found, it is in the utmost of importance.” Said DL.
“Not now Dawn Lighter! I must finish these papers.” Said Nightmare Moon, almost shouting as she looked up.
“Trust me, this is more important than those documents.” Said DL.
“What?! What is it then?” Said Nightmare Moon.
“It might be better to be said without prying ears listening in.” Said DL.
“I trust Spike, and anyway, who do we have to fear? We have no enemies yet.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“I know, but this is important. It involves, the Book of Prophecies and Predictions.” Said DL.
Explanation dawned on Nightmare Moon as she came into grasp the importance of such a book. She had known that her return was prophesied but did not know the specifics. “Well then, Spike, we can finish this work later, you are free to go.” Said Nightmare Moon.
Spike burning with curiosity, but not wanting to upset the Queen, quickly packed his belongings and left the room. Dawn Lighter soon emptied the contents that were in her saddlebag for Nightmare Moon to see. As Spike was leaving, he heard that Dawn Lighter had found a few new lines in the Prophecy, and the development of a new one. Yet before he could listen any further, he found himself already out of the room, with the door swinging behind him. Still curious, he put his head to the door, hoping to overhear something. Yet it seemed that there was something blocking the sound of the conversation that was going on inside the room.
“Oh well, I should tell Flutter Moon this. She would know what to do right now.” Said Spike, deciding to head to Flutter Moon’s cottage.
Meanwhile inside the room, Dawn Lighter finished the spell that soundproofed the room. “Their, now we shall have no one able to overhear us as we speak. Now, as I was saying, I believe I have found a new Prophecy. Not only did this book Prophecy of your return, but also, if any who were unable to retrieve the elements of harmony, to turn to the next page. And on this next page it gives a prophecy of five characters, and a coming war.”
“A war? But against who? We have no rivalry against any nation.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“It might not mean a war against other nations, but more of a civil war. A war with a rebellion.” Said DL. “As you can also remember, my host and her friends attempted to gain the Elements of Harmony. Thankfully you were able to destroy the Elements and defeat them. Now however, your story is not over.”
“Great, just after my takeover, I have another prophecy to worry about.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“I have some stuff that I have to think about too. But in the meantime, I think the best place to hide this book is in a special place, but where?” Wondered DL.
"Well where else to hide a book than the library?" Said Nightmare Moon. "In fact, inside the library, I have the perfect spot for it. A secret room that Celestia and I had used to keep books of importance in. If we place that book there, it will be well hidden from prying eyes.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“Perfect, lead the way then my Queen.” Said DL.
As they were heading out, they whispered theories to each other about who the five characters could be. “Do you think one of the characters could be one of us?” Said DL.
“It is too early to tell. Who knows, maybe I will not have to deal with any rebellion for another one thousand years. Maybe right now the rebellion is starting. Regardless we must be ready for anything. So, for now, hiding the book in the secret chamber will be the best plan of action until something new develops.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“What else is hidden inside this secret library of yours? How come my host has never heard of it?” Said DL.
“Celestia and I had been keeping old and dangerous spell books inside. Knowledge can be a dangerous thing to give freely. You and I will spend much more time here, going over quite a few books that will help you in your power. Some spells neither I nor Celestia had ever tried them.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“What kind of books?” Asked DL.
“Some of these books teach you how to summon great beings of power and bend them to your will. Others teach spells that strengthen different areas in the body, such as wing power, physical strength, and even magical strength. Though all of them have not been tested, only hypothesized.” Said Nightmare Moon. “Spells that could only work on magical creatures, such as us ponies. So the author had mostly scrapped his ideas, but kept some of his work written down. Most of them would never be allowed to be used nowadays, because they were never tested and highly dangerous.” Said Nightmare Moon.
Opening the secret passageway, which was done by pulling down two books with a star and moon logo on them, they entered, and both looked around. They both noticed that the place had gained a great amount of dust and was unkempt. "Further proof that Celestia never did anything here." Said Nightmare Moon.
They both spent an hour combing through the book, trying to see if they could gleam any new information from it. Both were unsuccessful in their finding. After placing the book in a pedestal, both sat back watching the book, expecting something to happen.
“Well, like I said earlier, this place will be perfect for hiding the book. Next to no one knows that this place exists, and I doubt Celestia has told any of the nobles.” Said Nightmare Moon. “That will be all the studying of that book for now, leave it as is until something else happens that we can connect to the prophecy.”
“Are you sure this place is unknown to the nobles? I wouldn’t want somepony snooping around here looking for trouble.” Questioned DL.
“Yes yes I am sure that it is safe. If you want, I can place a detection spell that will alert you or me if somepony other than us two open this book without our permission. Will that calm your paranoia?” Said Nightmare Moon.
With a simple nod of approval from DL, Nightmare Moon turned to cast the spell on the book. “There, now we will be alerted if the book is moved. I think it is time for us to retire for the night.”
“Very well, goodnight my Queen.” Said DL.
“Good night Dawn Lighter.” Said Nightmare Moon, as they both headed back to their quarters.

Chapter [7] A somewhat infiltration plan.
Chapter [7] A somewhat infiltration plan.
“So, what do we know for sure?” Said Blue Moon pacing back and forth.
“Well we know that Dawn Lighter found something new in the book of Prophecies and Predictions. We know that it was important enough for her to rush barging in on Queen Nightmare Moon and me. And they were suspicious enough of me that they sent me away, for them to be alone together.” Said Spike. The group had disbanded and returned twelve hours later back to Flutter Moon’s cottage.
Everyone except Moon Pie was there, as she had asked to be left alone as she was still trying to cope with Celestia’s death. Shining Moon had just recently left the cottage to make sure the surrounding area was empty of any intruders so that they could speak in peace.
“Good, so we know that whatever was in that book was so monumental, that it not only put DL into a frenzy, but got the attention of Nightmare Moon. Apple Moon, what do you remember of the book, you say that DL had told you about it before?” Said Blue Moon.
“Yeah, I had asked DL, before she got converted, how she knew that Nightmare Moon would return and such. She told me that she had read it in that book that she had, nothing else.” Said Apple Moon.
“Well what are we waiting for? We clearly know something important has happened. Whether that be a new prophecy, or something DL missed the first time she read it or something. Lets just storm the castle and get the book ourselves.” Said Moon Dasher.
“It could be nothing. It could be just some minor detail that doesn’t seem to have any importance to us.” Said Moon Melody.
“Or it could be the very thing we need that presents us an opportunity to dethrone Nightmare Moon.” Said Moon Sparkle.
“What is so wrong with what she has done so far? She hasn’t done anything super evil, maybe she plans on being a good ruler.” Said Flutter Moon quietly.
“Flutter Moon look outside. The fricken MOON is still in the same place since Nightmare Moon has taken over! She has refused to take it down. And since she also KILLED Celestia, we can all agree she is already evil. There is nothing she can do now that will be able to reverse that.” Said Moon Dasher
“Storming the castle is out of the question. We still do not want to outright declare war on the throne quite yet. We need to pursue a more subtle way in.” Said Blue Moon.
“We don’t even know where they are hiding the book. They could be hiding it in the huge vault that the castle has.” Said Moon Melody.
“Well actually we can factor that out already. Celestia changed it so that only she could access it, now that she is dead, I am sure Nightmare Moon is kicking herself because now she cannot open it. It will be a tough nut to crack for her, and I doubt she has already broken into it.” Said Blue Moon.
“Where else? I can’t think of a more secure place than there. Where else would you hide a book?” Said Moon Melody.
This all stumped the group. Mulling it over, none of them could come up with a good place where DL and Nightmare Moon could have hidden it. As they were all thinking, Shining Moon returned from sweeping the area for any eavesdroppers. Seeing everypony silent, he sent a questioning glance towards Moon Melody.
“We do not know where DL and Nightmare Moon could have hidden the book. And we are all scratching our heads trying to figure out where.” Said Moon Melody.
“Well, isn’t it obvious?” Said Shining Moon, surprised by their looks. “If you want to hide something as basic as a book, not wanting it to gain too much suspicion, but not make it nearly impossible for yourself to get it. Then where would you hide it?”
Still seeing their blank looks, he continued. “Hide it in a place full of books. So many books that anyone not knowing what to look for will get utterly lost in their search. Hide it in a library.”
“The Canterlot library! Of course! It is a secure place, but it is also a place open that anypony can access it.” Said Blue Moon.
“Great, well we somewhat have an idea of where the book could be hidden, and the place is open to the public. Why don’t we just go now?” Said Moon Dasher.
“I don’t know, that seems to easy. Maybe they were crafty and had hidden it inside some secret compartment or room that only they could access.” Said Blue Moon.
“What about the Restricted section?” Said Moon Melody. Now it was her turn to receive blank looks from everypony.
“The Restricted section? I have never heard of such a place.” Said Shining Moon.
“Me too, and I have been to that library plenty of times. I have never heard of this ‘Restricted section.’” Said Blue Moon.
“Well Celestia showed me the place when I first became an Alicorn. Neither of us understood truly what happened, but the pony that gave Celestia and Nightmare Moon their Alicorn powers had left some of his previous work behind. Sadly, neither of us found anything of use.” Said Moon Melody, smirking because she knew something that the no longer prince Blue Moon didn’t.
“Well where is this Restricted section? How do we get in?” Wondered Shining Moon.
“It is towards the back end of the library I believe, with two books that have a sun and moon symbol on them. You must pull both down in order to get access to the room. There you walk down some steps and into a great room that is filled with many wonderfully dangerous books. Whoever goes in there must be very careful.” Said Moon Melody.
“That brings us to a good question, who will be the one who gets this book?” Said Blue Moon. “All of us cannot just waltz in and take the book, I am sure Nightmare Moon has placed defenses so that nopony can just come and go as they please. Maybe some sentries that will alert her if anypony suspicious goes in.”
“I also know for a fact that Celestia had cast a spell that made it impossible to teleport inside the room. So we will have to physically be there in order to get access to it.” Said Moon Melody.
“Why don’t I go? I can be in and out there super quickly, nopony would suspect it.” Said Moon Dasher.
“You could do that, but you also have a much higher chance of being caught. If you are seen zooming in and out of the library, someplace that you do not normally go. Then there is bound to be somepony who sees you and reports it. No, we need to do this secretly, we need to sneak into the library at night, grab the book, and run back as fast as we can.” Said Blue Moon.
“And by we you mean one of us, two at the most. Somepony who is quiet, stealthy, and won’t cause suspicion. And another to keep a lookout.” Said Shining Moon.
They all turned to Flutter Moon.

Chapter [8] Tempus narrabo.
It had been nearly half a year since Nightmare Moon took over. Dawn Lighter was starting to get bored reading the same book repeatedly. The Book of Prophecies and Predictions would not budge any secrets that it might have still hidden. She grew anxious for something exciting to happen. So when Queen Nightmare Moon requested her presents, Dawn lighter was eager to comply.
“The nobles and commoners wish that I bring the moon down or make some way to measure time. I have elected that, in order to have time pass, the moon shall rise in the east, and set in the west. It being ‘full’ during the day, and ‘empty’ during the night. I need your help. What I need you to do is help me cast a spell that not only makes the moon do these rotations by itself, but also have it during the ‘full’ period give a warmth to the kingdom. This way, all the wildlife can have a little more sustainability.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“A wonderful idea, I have been itching to use the new spells that I have found, and this will be a good basis to understand my limits. When should we start?” Said DL.
“In two hours, for right now, I will announce to the nobles my plans. This should finally have me at peace, as I have fulfilled most of their requests.” Said Nightmare Moon.
Meanwhile, for those that were starting a rebellion. They had been going over the plan of infiltration. Moon Blue had acquired a blueprint of the castle and had been going over the layout with Flutter Moon.
“The secret room may not be on the schematic, but from what Moon Melody said, it shouldn’t be too hard to locate, as well as access. We need you to sneak in and get to the library. There, just get into the secret library, look for the book, get it, and get out. Nightmare Moon and Dawn Lighter just made an announcement to the nobles that they plan on doing something with the moon. So that should give us plenty of time for our heist.” Said Moon Blue.
“What if something goes wrong?” Asked Flutter Moon.
“Nothing should go wrong, as long as you don’t take too long to find the book. If you feel like something is wrong, just get out as fast as you can. We should have an agent on guard near the outside of the library if anything comes up. Somepony you know and can trust.” Said Moon Blue.
“And what if I get caught? Should I lie? What if they hurt me?” Said Flutter Moon.
“If you get caught just say you stumbled into the room by accident and got curious to where it would lead. Our scouts have informed us that the Queen has placed some kind of guard. However, we have no clue who they might be, or what they might be for that matter.” Said Moon Blue. “As to whether they hurt you, you are innocent until proven guilty. So just relax, stay quiet, get in and out with the book, and above all else do not-” but before Moon Blue could finish, Shining Moon came bursting in.
“Queen Nightmare Moon has addressed to the nobles that she plans on not only have the moon move through the sky, but also have it give warmth throughout the ‘day.’ This is great news!” Said Shining Moon.
“It is indeed. Flutter Moon, I believe our business is complete. You know your task, do it dutifully and do it tonight. And what I was going to say before I was interrupted was whatever you do, do not get distracted. You may go now, Shining Moon and I have some business to attend to with some potential allies of the earth pony race, farmers and such.” Said Moon Blue, dismissing Flutter Moon.
Nightmare Moon was on one of the balconies that surveyed the kingdom, watching the night sky with a glazed look. With a knock Dawn Lighter entered inter her presence and waited for Nightmare Moon to acknowledge her. “Come, sit next to me Dawn Lighter.” She said. “After we finish this spell, I believe we will bring peace to this land. I long for the night now, and I wish to sleep. So, I will be giving you most of my power. You will be representing me on any matter that may come up.”
“It will be an honor, my Queen.” Said DL.
“Come, it is time for our subjects to be able to experience the moon to a fuller extent. You are aware of the spell that I gave you?” Said Nightmare Moon.
“Yes. These two spells should do what the books said they would. Which one will we do first?” Said DL.
“First we will set in motion the moon, then we will make it give warmth throughout its light cycle.” Said Nightmare Moon. “Now then, link up with me, as I start the spell.”
Both closing their eyes, Dawn Lighter connected with the equilibrium of Nightmare Moon’s magic and they both swayed as she strengthened the spell. As Nightmare Moon was putting the final touches of magic on the spell, DL felt the familiar tug as magic was being taken out. With a final hymn from Nightmare Moon, the Queen finished the spell, and sent it, flying through the night air, upwards and onto the moon. They both gazed in wonder as the moon started to move on its own, without any tether to anyone.
“Well done, before we make haste to cast another grand spell, I believe we should rest for thirty minutes. GUARDS!” Shouted Nightmare Moon and two hooded guards entered. DL grew interested in these new guards that Nightmare Moon had somehow conjured up.
“What race are these from, and what do you call them?” She wondered.
“I do not know for certain the race, but it is close enough to our own to be able to pass as my guards. As to what I call them, I just named them as a very self-explanatory ‘hooded ones.’ They have been proven to be quite useful. Both as guards and as troops in case of any war that may arise. They are made from some shadow substance, but still have enough mass to wear armor and such.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“How interesting, who knows about these things exist?” Asked DL.
“I have them stationed in certain areas that are strategic points among the castle, but they relish staying in the dark. Few have set eyes on them, and fewer still believe that they are real, the rest think it’s just a trick of the light. They blend quite well into the background. If anything comes up, I have full confidence that they will deal with any situation.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“Ah yes, but how did you get them?” Said DL.
“They came from one of the same books that I have used for summoning in the past. One of the books I believe I have already told you about. In fact, after we are done with this second spell, why don’t you head over to the restricted area and study up on the summoning. There are quite a few creatures in that book that, if you can control them, can be very powerful and useful.” Said Nightmare Moon.
Realizing that she had not given any command to the guards, she quickly sent them away to fetch something to drink for the two of them. As they waited for the refreshments, Nightmare Moon conjured two chairs for them to sit in.
“Do you remember the moon?” Said DL as they both sat.
“How could I forget. All those voices and spirits trapped there.” Said Nightmare Moon.
“Do you think Senti-” But before DL could finish, Nightmare Moon interrupted her.
“If I want his presence here, I would get a body for him to manifest in, just like I had done for you Anima. Remember, you were the most faithful spirit, and that is why I chose you first. If you are not enough, then I will bring him here. But for now, I do not want to have too many spirits wandering freely here. There was a reason Celestia had banished you there.” Said Nightmare Moon. That was the moment when the guards returned and brought refreshments.
After they had finished their drinks, Nightmare told Dawn Lighter that it was time for the second spell to take hold onto the moon. As they returned once again to the balcony, they could already see their previous work in effect. As Dawn Lighter sidled up next to Nightmare Moon, they once again closed their eyes in unison, and she linked up with the equilibrium of Nightmare Moon and they both started swaying.
Once again, Dawn Lighter felt the tugging as she felt to magic relinquish from her, and Nightmare Moon sent the spell also into the night air, but this time, instead of going onto the moon, the spell infused itself into the moon, causing it to send waves of warmth throughout the land.
As they both opened their eyes, Nightmare Moon smiled. It had been a long time since Nightmare Moon had generally been happy, and this was going to be one of those moments. Turning to DL, she said, “now that all the spells have been completed, I believe I can rest in peace, basking in the glow of our accomplishment.”
“As for me, I will go study up on that spell book of summoning. Sleep well, my Queen.” Said DL, as she left the room. Her walk was also chipped with excitement at the prospect of what they had just completed.

Chapter [9] Conversations, with a book.
Surprisingly, the Canterlot Library only had a few ponies in it. Most of them engrossed in one or two books. So when Flutter Moon entered quietly, it was rather easy to dodge out of their peripheral vision. She had made it a habit of coming here often. Sometimes to check out a book, other times to observe the general vicinity of the library. So if any did notice her, they would not pay too much attention since she was considered a regular.
Making her way to the back end of the library, she again noted the two books with a sun and moon image on each back. Looking around to make sure she was still un-observed, she quickly propped up a stool nearby, and pulled down the two books in unison. Hearing a soft *click* sound as the bookcase slid back and opened to reveal a smaller space with a stairwell spiraling down.
“Well, there is no turning back now. Onwards and downwards I guess.” She whispered as she descended the stairwell, closing the door behind her. As she descended the she notices some lovely runes that were sprawled along the walls. Some she could read, warning her to turn back. Others strange equations that seemed to have no meaning. Some looked so old that they may have predated the castle itself.
“Come now Flutter Moon, let’s not be distracted by the nice-looking scribbles. Stay focused on the task of finding the book.” She said to herself. Finally reaching the bottom, she came upon the giant room. There was something strange about the room. Most libraries had an almost dead and musty feeling of books, but here, it felt like they were alive. Some of them probably were, was one of the conclusions that she made when she felt a presence beginning to take notice and was watching her. Though she didn’t know where it came from.
A shiver ran down her back as she made her way around the massive room. Books, books everywhere. Trying to gauge where to start, she couldn’t help noticing that one book in particular was catching her glance. Veering away as she once again consoled herself not to get distracted. Pausing for a moment, she noticed that the moonlight, coming from a nearby window, was moving! She quickly glanced and saw that, true to what Nightmare Moon had said, the moon was now on its course moving through the sky!
Sitting and staring at the window for five minutes, Flutter Moon soon recognized what she was doing and consoled herself again. Drawing closer to the same book that got her attention, this time though, the temptation was too great. Disregarding the increase of her senses telling her that indeed, there was something watching her, she touched the book.
A wave of intelligence brushed up against her mind, seeking to penetrate her very psyche. Trying to throw up a clumsy mental barrier, something Moon Sparkle had once taught her, but to no use as the intruding mind got whatever information that it was seeking.
“So, thief, do you have anything to say for yourself?” A masculine voice came from all around her and from nowhere. Flutter Moon promptly jumped in surprise.
“Who… Who was that? Who’s there?” She said looking around wide eyed.
“I would be the book that you were about to steal, you were just out of my vision as you entered, and seeing a non-unicorn enter into the sacred Halls of Knowledge without accompanying a unicorn got my attention. Now, as to my earlier question, do you have anything to say for yourself, thief?” Said the Book accusingly.
“I… I don’t consider myself a thief…” Said Flutter Moon.
“Don’t try lying to me, I scanned your mind and saw you had an intent to take one of the books here, clearly mine as I am the book of the grea-” But before the Book could finish itself, Flutter Moon interrupted it.
“Actually, I don’t want to steal you…r book, I am looking for the book of Prophecies and Predictions. Could you tell me which one that would be? Quickly, I don’t have much time.” The sudden sense of courage that came from herself surprised her. Then she reasoned that, whatever this book was, it couldn’t hurt her, it was just a book.
“Well I’ll be, such rudeness to one of the most ancient and greatest books in this library, I will have none of it here.” Said the Book quite pompously.
“I don’t mean to offend, I am just on a very important mission that could have major implications in the future, and that could affect thousands of lives. So if I offended you in any way I am deeply sorry, but I must be going soon, as Dawn Lighter could be here any minute.” Said Flutter Moon.
“Would that be the Spirit that indwells in that unicorn that came by earlier? I was too far away to see her, and she stayed hidden from me by a very powerful mind wall. Tell you what, if you tell me what is going on, then I will help you find your book, OK? Said the Book.
So, fearing the waning moon, she quickly told the story of how Nightmare Moon had returned, defeated her, and her five other friends, and took over the kingdom. The Book listened well, only asking a few questions here and there. It was surprised that Nightmare Moon did away with Celestia so quickly.
“Did you know her? Celestia I mean.” Said Flutter Moon.
“I knew them both actually, and it is sad how the mighty have fallen.” Said the Book. “Anyway, thank you for telling me your story, now to fulfill my part of the bargain.”
“Oh thank you, thank you so mu-” but before Flutter Moon could finish. There was a great warmth that came into the massive room, wrapping strands of moonlight all around. A peace came over Flutter Moon, thinking it was the sun, she turned, once again, to the window, which had warmed up the room considerably.
Sadly, it was still the moon in the sky, and Flutter Moon, realizing that she had talked to long, went into a frenzy. “Please, please tell me where it is. Dawn Lighter could be coming any minute and I won’t have much time.”
“Very well, touch me again, and I will piggyback onto you. Nightmare Moon did something to the book you are talking about, and I want to investigate.” Said Book.
Touching it again, Flutter Moon could feel the presence once again on her mind, but this time, when she withdrew her hoof, it stayed. “You had passed it when you came to me, go back to the middle. I will direct you from there.” The presence said.
Finally finding the book, Flutter Moon was about to pick it up when the presence gave her a warning. “Be careful now, Nightmare Moon has placed a spell of detection to trigger if any move this book. She infused the spell so that it stays constant. I can suppress it, but only for a while, and then it will be released.” It said.
Careful not to pick up the book, Flutter Moon opened the book, and flipped through the pages until she found the one about Nightmare Moon. As they both looked over the prophecy of Nightmare Moon’s return, they noticed the new passage that followed the return of the Queen. This new passage, which was a prophecy of its own. Told of a coming war.
“This isn’t right. You and your friends should have easily defeated Nightmare Moon with the Elements of harmony. In fact, you yourself have quite a bit of magic in you. What happened?” The presence wondered.
“I think Dawn Lighter, before she got possessed, hesitated. Something in her eyes told me she had given up. None of us know what could have happened.” Said Flutter Moon.
“But everything about that seems wrong, as if… no, that wouldn’t be possible, unless…” The presence’s thought process trailed off.
“Unless?” Asked Flutter Moon.
“I have a theory, but for now, you need to go, quickly. I am going to borrow some of your will to cast the spell. Bring me back to my book and bring this book along.” Said the presence.
“But wait, I never got your name.” Said Flutter Moon.
“That’s not important right now. Right now, you need to get out of here. With that book. I have placed a spell on it that should allow you to bring it out of this library, but my magic can only go so far. When you cross the threshold that leaves this place, the spell will collapse. When that happens, run like hell.” Said the Book.
“But I…” Started Flutter Moon.
“GO!” Said the Book, pushing her towards the exit with the book. As Flutter Moon sprinted up the staircase. She quickly brought the latch down and moved through the passage. When she did, she could hear a giant *BOOM* when the bookcase closed behind her, and a voice, also booming. That said, “INTRUDER!”

Another chapter so early! Crazy I know, but I really want to get this one done sooner rather than later. Gotta get the story moving!
Edit: More stuff fixed. Also, I forgot to say this, but this is my favorite chapter for this story.
Chapter [10] Successes and failures.
As Dawn Lighter was making her way to the Canterlot Library, one of Nightmare Moon’s guards, the “hooded ones” approached her. “The Queen has employed us to give a message to either you or her if any were to enter into the ‘Restricted Section’ of the library.” It said in a raspy voice.
It took a minute for her to realize the implications of the message. Acting quickly, she gave a command to the guard to close the library and secure a perimeter around it in case of an attack. Both then quickly ran to the library; the guard went to relay the message to its fellows, and they started moving ponies out of the library.
As for Dawn Lighter, she was about to open the secret passageway when a foal tugged on her leg. “Please miss, can you help me and mah moma? She isn’t feeling good right now, and we have lots of books to carry. Could you help us, pretty please?” Said the foal, giving its best puppy eyes.
She turned away again about to open the passageway when the foal clamped itself onto her back leg. Frustrated that the foal persisted in its attempt to have her help its mother. Realizing that it would not budge, and that if she were to become the leader of the nation, she would have to be more pleasing towards others. Turning away, she quickly followed the foal to its mother, who indeed, looked very sick with a slight haze coming from her.
Dawn Lighter quickly helped the two, though the disease from the mother confused her. “Sorry to be rude and ask, but do you know what ails you? I might be able to help.” She said hoping to fix whatever was wrong and get back to her own business.
“We do not know. I was hoping to be able to find the ailment in one of these books we have, but to no avail.” Said the mother, holding up two large volumes.
“May I ask your name? If you want, I can run a quick spell over you that could determine what the disease is.” Said Dawn Lighter.
“My name is Moon Blossom. And if you insist, but it won’t do any good. Both me and my husband have the disease, and we both have gone to the hospital. But they were all scratching their heads over what the disease could be.” Said Moon Blossom.
“I think I will try anyway, then I can make my own assumptions.” Said Dawn Lighter, as she cast the spell. The results, true to what the mother had said, were confusing. Dawn Lighter could see that some magic had been done to the pony, but the spell had somewhat backfired.
“Find anything useful? All the nurses had different theories but none of them made any sense to us.” Said Moon Blossom.
“I do, but first I have a question. Did you have any pony cast a spell over you recently?” Said Dawn Lighter.
“Not recently, only during the renaming process when Queen Nightmare Moon renamed everypony. But all the nurses said that the spell the Queen placed on us should help us adapt to the new environment.” Said Moon Blossom.
“Hmm, very strange. Were you sick at the time?” Said Dawn Lighter.
Moon Blossom had to think a moment before answering. “In fact, we were, both me and my husband had the common cold. But what does that have to do with anything?” She said.
“That’s probably why. The spell must have backfired because it came into resistance from bacteria or something. I don’t remember the science right now, but I suggest you make your appeal to the Royal Hospital and I will swing by and take a better look, and probably heal you up.” Said Dawn Lighter.
“Oh, thank you so much. This sickness has been a burden to our family, and we have fallen into some hard times.” Said Moon Blossom.
“Now go, I have important business to attend to.” Said Dawn Lighter as she walked them out of the library.
Moon Dasher had been watching the library with a greater interest when some guards started escorting ponies out of it. She grew even more interested when Dawn Lighter was helping two ponies with books. Dawn Lighter was busy talking with them, so Moon Dasher figured it was probably the best time to sneak into the library when no one was looking. Flying very fast, she zoomed in overhead and hid herself among the upper levels of the library.
Seeing that this was a good vantage point, Moon Dasher began to look around and make sure that no one had seen her fly up here. Content that she had stayed anonymous she began to look down and see what events would transpire.
As Dawn Lighter returned to the library, she promptly forgot about the two ponies outside, and the promise she had made to them. One of the guards informed her that the area was secured, and that the library was empty. She then was on her way back to the entrance to the Restricted Section when she saw a pony exiting through it, it’s back to her. There was a giant *BOOM* somewhere else, but Dawn Lighter didn’t pay any attention as instead she yelled “INTRUDER!” at the pony.
Without losing a second, two guards immediately arrested the pony. As Dawn Lighter drew closer, she recognized the pony. “Ah Flutter Moon. What brings you to the Canterlot Library today?” She said.
“Well to… to get a book I guess.” Said Flutter Moon, trying to act dumb.
“And a particular book, say, the very same book you have on yourself? How do you know about this book?” Said Dawn Lighter angrily picking up the book that had fallen from Flutter Moon. Yet before Flutter Moon could finish, a sudden rainbow blur came from nowhere and landed right next to her.
“We were just curious to what you and the Queen were up too, that’s all.” Said Moon Dasher out of breath after landing.
“Our business is our own. And how did you get in here?” Said Dawn Lighter.
“We had been spying on you two because you both went in and out of the place without any context. So, Flutter Moon got curious.” Said Moon Dasher. Flutter Moon was about to say something, but Moon Dasher’s gaze told her to keep quiet.
Dawn Lighter was still suspicious and ordered the guards to put them into custody and that she would deal with them later. “And I’ll take that book by the way. I still have a few more questions that I want to ask, of each of you. Take them away.” She said.

Getting closer and closer to the end of this story. Can't wait to see what happens :)
Chapter [11] The Trial of the Butterfly.
Flutter Moon was sitting in an interrogation room, staring at a two-way mirror, looking back at her reflection. She pondered what to say, and what not to say. Should she talk of the rebellion? What was to become of her? Her train of thought got derailed when Dawn Lighter entered, sitting across from her.
“So, you were found in the possession of the Book of Prophecies and Predictions. Did you read anything that was in there?” Said Dawn Lighter.
“I only read the prophecy of Nightmare Moon’s return, and the following page as well.” Said Flutter Moon, not trying to hide anything, yet.
“And what were you going to do with that information? Why did you bring the book back with you?” Questioned Dawn Lighter.
“I was going to tell Moon Dasher, so that we could stop spying on you two. I brought the book because I wanted to show Moon Dasher what I had found, that’s all.” Said Flutter Moon.
“And that was, all, you were going to do?” Asked Dawn Lighter.
“Well yeah, we didn’t have any plans on what to do, in fact, I was going to put the book back before you noticed, but you caught us so…” Said Flutter Moon as she trailed off.
“Don’t play dumb with me, I know you had plans for that book. Let’s see if your compatriot is as chatty as you are.” Said Dawn Lighter, still suspicious, and left the room.
Moon Dasher had a hard look in her eyes as Dawn Lighter walked in. Sitting down, both looked at each other, waiting to see who would break the silence. “Is Flutter Moon alright?” Said Moon Dasher.
“I will be the one who asks questions here, not you. Now tell me, why were you two spying on the Queen and me? Who else knows about the book?” Said Dawn Lighter.
“We weren’t spying, we were just curious to see what you two were doing, and why you were always secretive. Flutter Moon still wanted to be your friend or something. Look, nopony else knows about the book except us. I warned Flutter Moon not to go into whatever room you were in, but she wouldn’t listen to me.” Said Moon Dasher.
“Well it looks like your friend got herself curious enough to steal a book, and then get captured. We will have to execute judgement on her becomes of the crimes she has committed against the kingdom.” Said Dawn Lighter.
“Crimes?! We haven’t broken any laws!” Exclaimed Moon Dasher.
“That will be up to us to decide. We will put both of you on trial. Arrangements have been made to put together a court. Since we have not been able to make any connection with your lawyers, we will provide you with a public interest lawyer. The court will proceed in three hours. You and your compatriot will have two hours to talk with your lawyer together to establish what you will plead for.” Said Dawn Lighter.
“This country use to be great! But ponies like you have ruined it!” Shouted Moon Dasher as Dawn Lighter left the room.
An hour later, Moon Dasher was moved into another room, she saw Moon Flutter talking with another pony. She quickly went over and hugged Flutter Moon. “Are you alright?” She asked.
“I am fine. But things aren’t looking good for me.” Said Flutter Moon.
“She’s right, Dawn Lighter gave me a list of her actions, and yours, and the laws that were broken because of those actions.” Said the lawyer.
“Is there anything we can do to get out of this? And are you with the…?” Said Moon Dasher trailing off.
“Hello, my name is Frothic Moon, and I yes, I am your assigned Lawyer. Your case Moon Dasher will be easier to work with, since you haven’t physically done anything wrong, other than entering in a closed environment and being a co-conspirator. But I can plead that you didn’t plan on doing anything. It’s Flutter Moon that I am worried about.” Said Frothic Moon.
“What charges does she have?” Said Moon Dasher.
“Well to start with a few, breaking and entering, stealing a national security, criminal and specific intent, intentional conduct, and the list goes on. What is also bad is that you have no alibi, no self-defense that might help you in this case.” Said Frothic Moon.
“What about the insanity defense? I hear that one works sometimes.” Said Flutter Moon.
“No good, Flutter Moon. Nopony will buy that you were struck by insanity. All your friends can contest that you were in the right of mind.” Said Frothic Moon.
“Then what are we planning on doing? You are helping us, right? Said Moon Dasher.
“I am doing my best, but this case is pretty cold. I can worm you out of this Moon Dasher, but I don’t think I can do anything for you Flutter Moon.” Said Frothic Moon.
“Should I just plead Guilty to everything? I think I can accept whatever is my sentence.” Said Flutter Moon.
“That might not be a good idea, I was able to overhear some of the conversation that was going on between Dawn Lighter and the Queen. And from what I heard; these accusations will have major implications on you.” Said Frothic Moon.
“So, pleading Guilty is out of the question. We must be able to defend you Flutter Moon.” Said Moon Dasher.
“The best we can do is plead guilty later and see how few charges you can be convicted of. That’s the best alternative I can give you.” Said Frothic Moon.
“Thank you so much for all that you have done.” Said Flutter Moon.
“Now I will go over the details of the court hearing and presentation and such, since most ponies do not actually know how these things work.” Said Frothic Moon.
As the court came into session, Flutter Moon could feel all the eyes on her. She looked back and could see her other three friends in the back, smiling at her, trying to give her support. Turning back to face forward, she stared at the podium that held Queen Nightmare Moon, who would proceed as the Judge.
The whole process was more of a blur to Flutter Moon. Dawn Lighter would read the charges, Frothic would do her best to try and gain some ground on her part, but every accusation was harder and harder to dismantle. When finally, the verdict was held. “All rise to hear the verdict of Flutter Moon.” Said Nightmare Moon. As everyone rose, fear stabbed at Flutter Moon’s heart as she waited for the conviction.
“Flutter Moon, I find you, Guilty, of treason against the crown, with possession of dangerous knowledge, and the intent of sharing said knowledge with others. Your verdict, is death.” Said the Queen.
“As for Moon Dasher, who conspired with Flutter Moon." She continued. "She is found, Guilty. Though she did not act upon her curiosity, she did however spy upon our work, conspire with Flutter Moon, and intrude on royal business. She will not face the same fate as Flutter Moon. Instead, she will be cast out of high life society, never to step hoof in Canterlot. This is my verdict for both. Case closed.”
Author's Note
Man I really hate writing law. I hope I never, EVER have to write this kind of stuff again. Anyway this chapter was needed in order to get the plot moving, and I am sorry if this was boring. Anyway, I plan on making this probably the lowest point in the series, plot wise at least (hopefully).
Chapter [12] The promise.
It was a beautiful ‘day’, and Moon Dasher hated it. She wished that it wouldn’t be so perfect, but Nightmare Moon had made it so that nothing could impede on the process, including the weather. Everyone was gathered around the clearing that had been made, as Flutter Moon was brought out so that all could see. She had been crying, but she seemed unhurt, for now.
It seemed cruel to keep her in suspense, but the Queen had decreed it to be so. As Flutter Moon took her place near the stand that had been made, she sat, quietly, looking at the place that she would be killed. “Is this the only way?” She said at a whisper.
Yet her words were never heard by any, as everyone’s attention was on Dawn Lighter as she came out with Nightmare Moon. They were chatting about something else, but the way that they were walking and how they dealt with the whole situation felt wrong . Like it was a casual day. Disgusted, Moon Dasher turned away.
“My subjects! This is a glorious day to keep in remembrance! Let this day remind any who wish to rebel or have thoughts about attempting anything. Be warned! You will experience the same fate, or worse! Let us partake in the cleansing of those who wish us ill.” Said Nightmare Moon. “If there are any here, who would like to take this burden, speak now, or forever hold your peace.”
The sudden turn of events surprised Moon Dasher. Nightmare Moon was offering for somepony to take Flutter Moon’s place! She looked around, hoping that one of her friends would offer themselves. Yet none did, they were all silent in their tears. Moon Dasher pondered whether she should take her friends place. Except, she reasoned, Flutter Moon wouldn’t want anypony to take her place. She would be selfless and would have done it for any of them. So, when the moment passed, Moon Dasher immediately felt guilty for not speaking up.
“Very well then, none have offered. Let the process continue!” Said Dawn Lighter.
“Wait! I… can I at least say goodbye?” Said Moon Dasher.
Instantly suspicious, Dawn Lighter was about to refuse her request when Nightmare Moon spoke first. “I will allow it, embrace, then move on, we have wasted enough time already. Let it be known that I may still be gracious.”
Moon Dasher quickly went to Flutter Moon’s side and whispered with her. “I am so sorry Flutter Moon, I… I don’t know what to say.” Said Moon Dasher, holding back tears.
“Hush now Moon Dasher. It’s OK. Can I ask you to do something for me?” Said Flutter Moon, tears coming freely for her.
“Anything, anything Flutter Moon.” Said Moon Dasher.
“First, I want you to go to my animals and do your best to explain to them that I won’t be coming back. Angel bunny will take it the hardest, but they will have to be strong. And second, I want you to take one of my feathers. As a remembrance of the fun we had, and the experiences that we shared. Will you do that for me?” Said Flutter Moon.
“Of course, of course. Anything” Said Moon Dasher, now fully crying. They hugged, making sure not to hurt her friend, she quickly plucked a feather and put it in her own wings.
“OK, that’s enough of that now. It is time.” Said Dawn Lighter.
“Goodbye, Flutter Moon.” Said Moon Dasher, as she was escorted away. Returning to her place, Moon Dasher looked away. She couldn’t watch. Closing her eyes, she waited for it to happen. With a sudden *Whoosh* and the others bursting out in tears, the deed was done.
“Your sacrifice will not go to waste Flutter Moon; I swear upon it.” Said Moon Dasher under her breath.
“Now then, as for the you Moon Dasher. You shall be stripped of your tablet, no longer a citizen of the kingdom. You do have it with you, correct?” Said Dawn Lighter.
“Of course, here it is.” Said Moon Dasher, producing the tablet.
“You shall be stripped of your status as a child of the Moon. You shall be known as only ‘Dasher’ and will not be able to partake in any royal festivities. You shall never step hoof into the city or castle on order of arrest. Do you recognize these terms?” Said Dawn Lighter.
“I do.” Said Dasher simply.
“Then I relinquish you of these titles and cast you out of this city. You have 24 hours starting now to collect your belongings and leave.” Said Dawn Lighter. “Those here bear witness of these events. This event is closed.”
As Dasher was packing up her belongings inside her room, she took out the feather that she had taken. A final memento of her friend. The reality that her friend, no, her best friend, was gone sunk in. Flutter Moon was gone, and there was nopony that could fill the void that her friend had filled.
“Oh Flutter Moon, what have I done. I could have saved you. I should have taken your place. How am I going to live with myself?” She said, fresh tears coming to her eyes.
A gentle knock came from the door, and Dasher, sniffing, went to see who it was. “Oh hey Moon Melody, where were you during the… the funeral?”
“I really wished I could have come Moon Dasher. But I would have drawn suspicion since others don’t know that I know you and all your friends. Plus, there is a development in an area that I had to deal with.” Said Moon Melody.
“A development? What do you mean? And I am just Dasher now.” Said Dasher.
“A certain individual has returned and has been wreaking havoc on things. He has been somewhat detained, but that’s why I am here. The resistance is wondering if you are still in. We know that our ‘plan’ did not go the way we intended, and we lost the book.” Said Moon Melody.
“I don’t know, I think I want to have some time to think about it. Is that OK?” Said Dasher.
“Oh no that is completely fine, take as much time as you need. You may not be able to find us, but when you are ready, we will find you.” Said Moon Melody.
“Thank you, it has been just such an emotional day, and I don’t really know what to think right now.” Said Dasher.
Moon Melody nodded and left the room. Dasher, returning to the feather, encased it in a box and put it in her saddle bag. “I will keep you with me Flutter Moon, till the end of time.”

Epilogue: To end a story. And a story to come.
“Well then, this will conclude our story for today. Now, I believe it is getting late. I would hate to keep your Mother waiting.” Said the stallion.
“But, but, you aren’t done with the story yet! This is just a cliffhanger.” Said Orin, pouting.
“Yeah!” Said Ava, a little emotional because of the ending. “What happens to Dasher? Does she join the resistance? Where do you come in, in this story? This can’t be all.”
“Ah well, that is a future story that I will tell you. There is much more that is to come. Yet it is late already, and I believe I have kept you two for quite the time. I am glad your Mother brought us food since you two were so engrossed in my story and wouldn’t budge for anything.” Said the stallion.
“But it isn’t that late. You still have time to tell us more.” Said Orin, but he hadn’t looked outside, which was well into the night.
“Oh but it is, I think we just finished before 11 pm. Way past your bedtime. Don’t worry, we can pick up right where we ended the next time you see me.” Said the stallion, smiling.
As luck would have it, both instantly yawned and were struggling to stay awake. It was at that time that their mother entered the room. “What’s this I hear that the story is over, so quickly? I would have thought you would stay up all night.” She said.
“I didn’t say all of it of course. Just ended with a good cliffhanger. Plus, I saw that they were getting sleepy. So now is a good time to stop.” Said the stallion.
“Ah, as only you could. I hated when you did that when I was just a filly. You would drive me crazy with your story telling.” Said the Mother.
“But Mooom! We want to hear what happens next!” Said Orin.
“And you will, later. Trust me, your Grandpa does not disappoint. Right now, it is bedtime for you and your sister. Be thankful that I let you stay up this late.” Said the Mother.
“But what if I can’t fall asleep?” Said Ava.
“Oh, but you will. You can dream up all the fun adventures you could have. Daring escape attempts. Dastardly villains. Saving the damsel in distress. You both have a very active imagination and I have full confidence you will sleep just fine.” Said the Mother.
“But what if we…” Started Orin, but was already drifting off, with his sister quickly following suit. The two remaining that were awake shared a chuckle as they both picked up the sleeping forms and brought them to their beds.
“Grandpa.” Said Ava, waking up from her bed. “Will you tell us the rest of the story?”
“Of course Ava, you don’t have to doubt me.” Said the stallion smiling.
“Do you promise?” She continued, so innocently.
“I promise, now get some sleep, that was one interesting story, aye? Don’t stay up too long thinking about it.” He said.
“So, you ended with Flutter Moon’s death, I assume?” Said the mare.
“Of course Velvet. That was your favorite spot to stop anyway. You loved stopping there for emotional reasons.” Said the stallion.
“I now, but I also knew what was to come. They are experiencing all this for the first time. You might shatter how they see the world after this.” She said.
“Well, maybe that is a good thing. Sometimes ponies need to grow up. I certainly had to grow up fast, faster when I was their age. Life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows all the time.” He said.
“I know that, but are they ready for, everything? Like your scars for instance. How you got them was pretty graphic. I know that when you finally told me, I had nightmares for a week.” She said.
“I have already thought about my story and a way to eclipse that out. I plan on watering it down, immensely. Since that is probably the most intense and traumatic part. Just like for you, I will keep the event vague enough that it will be sufficient to quench their curiosity.” He said.
“How are you going to pull that over them? I was very skeptical when you said you just ‘fell down’ and kept them.” She said.
“I know, I know, that was a pretty bad way of explaining it to you, but you were young, and I didn’t want to scare you. My past was a scary place you know.” He said. “Now I seem to recall it’s your bedtime too. Remember when you used to doze off when I told my stories?”
“How could I forget; your voice was the only thing that got me to fall asleep.” She said.
“Ah, those were the days; you were so cute when you fell asleep. Your mother would throw a fit if you stayed past 9:30.” He said.
“She always did worry about us. She was so pure.” She said.
“And I was so dark. She helped me get out of that darkness you know. It’s why I married her.” He said.
“Yeah. I miss her songs. She had the most angelic voice, better than any I could find.” She said.
“Yeah, I miss her too. Not all of us survived the reversal. I know that if I wasn’t so skilled as a unicorn, I would probably have perished a long time ago. Even now I can feel my mind slipping. That’s why I love telling stories, it helps exercise my mind.” He said.
“Well don’t stay up too late yourself Dad. I know you might be a legendary figure, but even legends need to sleep. Maybe I can join the foals as you tell us the story. I know that if I am with them, they will feel more welcomed.” She said.
“That’s a great idea. It’s been awhile since I have told you the story. Goodnight my little Velvet.” He said.
“Goodnight Dad, sweet dreams.” She said.

And thus, ends the first installment of the next few stories to come. I plan on touching up the first few chapters, since I didn't really know what I was doing and splatted words on a page. After that I plan on taking a break for a week or two, then jump right back in. Enjoy!
Edit: And finished with all the edits. If you don't see any message edits at the end of a chapter, then ding ding ding! I didn't mess up enough to put an edit at the end. Anyway, I plan on doing a little more advertising for this story, then immediately work on the next one, enjoy!
