How long is this damn meeting?
Flash Sentry stood watch left of Princess Twilight’s council room, grip tight on his spear. Other than occasional muffled laughter from behind the massive double door, one could hear a pin drop in the dead quiet hallway. He wouldn’t have minded if it wasn’t for the other guard keeping watch with him: Tempest Shadow. Captain Tempest Shadow.
Tempest hadn’t said a word to him since their initial meeting hours ago. Outside catching a few side glances thrown at him, statues showed more life than she did. The uneasy sense of aggression radiating from her crawled up the back of his neck. Perhaps her days of being the Storm King’s attack bitch never truly left. Or maybe she’s just as bored out of her mind as he was. Regardless of the reason, a more pressing detail about her bothered him more than anything else.
I don’t get it, Flash fumed quietly as he mustered Tempest. Not the way one officer measured another, but the way a lion sized up a hostile pride who had just trespassed on his territory. What is it about Tempest that made Twilight want to have a guard? Bigger disasters had happened to Equestria and she didn’t so much as put up a recruitment poster. I would’ve been first in line to be her captain.
A sigh nearly escaped his lips. He pushed his thoughts away from Tempest. That source of unexplained hostility was nothing but a distraction. He instead shifted his focus to better, more positive thoughts. Thoughts that surrounded the core of his desires during this trip to Ponyville. Thoughts around a certain somepony who was currently hosting a royal meeting in her castle.
It wasn’t exactly a state secret he had a crush on Twilight. He liked her shy and sometimes dorky attitude. Her mind was, for a lack of better words, brilliant, and she absolutely nailed that ‘cute mare next door’ look. He still kicked himself for not pursuing her earlier, but that was going to change. Today was the day he would make his move.
I’m only gonna have one shot at this. Flash stole a side glance at the door. Once Shining Armor and Cadance leave tomorrow morning, that’s it. Once she’s out of that meeting—
“Better quit while you’re ahead, Casanova.”
Tempest’s voice slapped Flash out of his thoughts, tearing his attention from the door to her stern expression. He paused and stared at her like she grew another head. “What was that?”
Tempest threw an icy side-glance. “You heard me. Twilight is off-limits.”
Did she just…The absurdity of her words nearly gave him whiplash. Flash couldn’t recall saying anything more than hello to Tempest the entire visit, nor did anything to afford such a resentful demand. It was as if she read his mind.
However, if Tempest thought she was going to have it her way, he was prepared to disappoint her.
Flash squared his shoulders as he faced her. “Oh yeah? I don’t see a ring on that horn. Who are you to decide that for her?”
“Captain of her guard. Protector of her best interests.” Tempest turned her head, eyes narrowing. “And a horny stallion’s worst nightmare.”
“Aw, ain’t that cute. What cereal box did you read that from, little filly?”
Tempest huffed. “This isn’t a joke. The only thing you’ll be giving the princess is a salute and goodbye, so keep that spear to yourself.”
Flash threw a smouldering look at the officer. “Hate to break it to you, but your grade school scare tactics ain’t cutting it. Just keep to your filly sandbox and let the grown ups make their own decisions. I’m not backing down.”
A smirk crept on Tempest’s face. “You’re going to eat those words, Sentry.” Flash really didn’t like the smoothness in her tone, but it didn’t matter. If Tempest planned to interfere, it sure as Tartarus wouldn’t end pretty, because a Royal Guard never surrendered. Especially not when the prize was somepony as amazing as Twilight.
He was prepared to give her a piece of his mind when the lock clicked.
Tempest and Flash resumed their professional stances just as the doors opened. Cadance, Shining, and Twilight emerged from the council, brimming with positive vibes.
Shining beamed. “Glad we got that out of the way. Just in time for dinner too.”
“Oh, I know the perfect place to go.” Cadance chimed. “You know that Maretonian place that just opened up down the street?”
“The Spice Palace?” Twilight asked. Cadance nodded. “Rarity was buzzing about how great the food and service is there. I’m curious to check it out myself.”
“Well what are we waiting for? Let’s head over there right now.”
“Not so fast, Shiny,” Cadance swatted his shoulder playfully. “I know you’re hungry, but let’s at least dress for the occasion. I’m sure you would barge in there with just a fork and napkin if I let you.”
“That sounds like BBBFF alright,” Twilight joined in.
“Ladies, please, you wound me. I’m more civilized than that.” With a proud grin, Shining placed a hoof on his chest. “I would’ve also brought a spoon.”
Cadance and Twilight roared with laughter. Flash just managed to resist snorting with laughter. Tempest’s lip twitched upward.
“Alright, fine, let’s get all fancied up, THEN grab some grub. Catch you at the entrance in a few, Twily?”
“Sounds like a plan. Don’t take too long, you two.” Twilight chirped at Shining and Cadance.
“You know I’m not going to be taking my sweet time. Cadance, though…” Shining chuckled as Cadance gave him another playful swat on the shoulder. He then turned his sights to Flash. “Flash, you’re dismissed. Kick back and relax while we’re gone.”
“Thank you, sir.” Flash smiled, way ahead of the captain. With a nod, Shining Armor trotted off with Cadance, leaving him in the company of Twilight and Tempest.
Alright. It’s now or never.
“Princess, do you have a moment?” Flash asked. He did his best to ignore Tempest’s glare and keep his eyes on the prize.
“What is it, Flash?”
Easy does it. “If you’re not busy later this evening, could I ask for just a moment of your time?”
Twilight opened her mouth to answer just as Tempest stepped forward, cutting in like a hot blade. “The princess is a very busy pony. Whatever you need to tell her, just tell her now.”
Flash forced down the scowl threatening to break his calm visage. “It’s a personal matter I only wish to discuss with the princess. So princess, if you can spare just a minute or—”
“There is no matter you need to discuss later that you can’t do while I’m present. Either tell her now or don’t at all.”
“With all due respect, the princess can speak for herself. Thank you for your input, captain.”
“Uh…” Twilight’s eyes bounced between the two, unsettled by the hostile energy radiating off them. “Did… I miss something? Is everything alright with you two?”
“Yes.” Tempest and Flash answered immediately.
Not completely convinced, Twilight merely shrugged. “Anyway… I think I will have some time later evening to talk to you, Flash. How does tonight at nine sound? We can have the conversation in my private study.”
“That sounds wonderful, princess.”
“Please, just Twilight.”
Flash’s smile brightened as Tempest’s frown deepened. “Alright, Twilight. I’ll see you tonight at nine then.”
Twilight smiled back. “Sounds good, Flash. I’ll see you then.”
As they parted, Tempest shot a lethal glare at Flash before falling in step alongside Twilight. Flash couldn’t contain his victorious grin.
Nailed it! Eat it, Tempest!
Flash took off for his designated quarters to get ready for tonight. He was only going to have one shot at this.
Failure was not an option.
The fireplace crackled softly, filling Twilight’s private study with an ambient glow. A hint of cologne permeated the air. The area was tidied and spotless like a barracks on inspection day. Green bean bags leaned against the three-pony couch facing the fireplace where Flash waited. The mood was set. The stage was prepared. All he needed now was for the star to arrive.
Flash glanced at the cuckoo clock for the upteenth time that hour. Eight-fifty nine.
Showtime.
Flash stood up, smoothed back his perfectly brushed mane and popped the mint he kept on the drink coaster on the nearby coffee table.
This is what you’ve been preparing for since the day you met. Show her that you’re a damn fine catch. You got this.
His ear twitched at the hoofsteps. Flash faced the study entrance, nervously brushing his mane back. The door creaked open.
“Thanks for taking the time to see me Twi—”
The world froze, as did Flash’s blood.
Tempest strolled through the door with an unshakeable air of arrogance. Her gaze swept the study before settling on the gaping stallion.
“Did you know you had better things to do than wait here for Twilight? Don't worry, I reminded her for you.” Tempest closed the door behind her. “You're welcome."
The anticipation and excitement collapsed like a house of cards. His heart plummeted alongside his hopes, the proverbial rug pulled from under him.
No… she didn’t just… !
Flash’s expression hardened as he walked up to Tempest. Disappointment was swiftly crushed by the tide of rage overtaking him. “What the fuck is your deal?!”
Tempest inched towards him, flashing a daring smirk. Never before had Flash wanted to smack a smug grin off somepony’s face so badly. “We’ve already had this conversation, Sentry: Twilight’s off limits.”
Flash’s nose flared. Enough was enough. “I don’t know what your problem is, Captain, but let me make one thing clear: I’m going to talk to Twilight, and you are not going to interfere again.”
Tempest grew quiet. Just when Flash thought she was tongue tied, she leaned forward, glare hardened to stone. “Or... what?”
Flash rolled his shoulders. “Or you and I are going to have a problem.”
“I’m not letting you near Twilight,” Tempest growled. “Some playcolt who’s hoping to add another good lay to his list of conquests? For all I know, maybe you’re just looking to get rich by hooking up with a princess. It doesn’t matter. One thing is clear about you, Flash Sentry...”
Tempest drew closer, forcing him to retreat. He stumbled backwards into the couch. Tempest pressed her hoof on his chest, sneering. “You’re nothing but a scummy opportunist looking for an easy mark. After all, if she was so important to you, you wouldn’t have wasted so many years screwing around. If you really gave a damn, you would’ve been at her door long before I arrived.”
“But then again…” Tempest inched closer. “Twilight looks so demure… So kind. So sweet…”
Flash shifted his head back as Tempest drew uncomfortably close.
“And so, so easy.” Tempest drawled with a hint of venom saturating her tone. “Maybe it just took you awhile to get tired of how hard the game in the Empire was. Maybe that’s the only reason you’re choosing now to make your move.“
Flash went quiet, steely blue eyes staring up hard purple ones.
“Well, Sentry? Nothing to your defense? No witty comebacks or excuses? Looks like I struck a nerve there.”
He huffed. “Nothing like that. In fact, you’re almost right about me. Just that you’re about five years late.”
Confusion dawned on Tempest’s face. “What do you mean?”
“Five years ago, I was close to the pony you think I am now. But I changed; working for the princess of love for a few years tends to do that to one's views on the matter. So you can shout your nonsense at me until you turn blue.”
Flash straightened himself up, his face almost closing the distance with Tempest as his smirk widened. “We both know Twilight is a damn good catch… And there isn’t a force in this world that’s going to stop me from doing what I should’ve done when I first saw her.”
“Too bad for you,” Tempest’s hoof pressed harder on his chest, “you’ve never faced an opponent like me. I owe her everything for changing my life for the better, and no toy soldier with a dream is going to stand in my way.”
“Meanwhile, you can wrap that “I’m no scumbag anymore” story up and bring it out with the other trash. I know exactly what you’re all about ever since she told me about the little game you played with her at the Crystal Empire, all those years ago...”
A glaring question popped into Flash’s mind, ignoring her hoof pressing into his chest and her piercing stare. Why does she know about Twilight and me? Why would she even care about something like that… unless…
Everything clicked into place at that moment. A missing piece to the puzzle found its place.
“Ah, so that’s your story.” Flash threw on a malicious grin. “You play like you’re just looking out for her, but it’s all bullshit.”
Her smirk vanished. Tempest glared with suspicion. “What are you getting at?”
Flash rose from the couch, pushing her hoof aside in the process. “You’re not looking after the princess for her best interest; you’re looking after your own best interest. You got it bad for the princess. Really bad.”
Tempest flinched, then snarled. “What we have is none of your business!”
“And it would’ve stayed that way if you weren’t in my business! Now you’ve made it my business to remind you of how pathetic you are.” Flash sneered. “You’re scared because I’m a threat to you!”
Tempest scoffed. “You? A threat? That’s adorable.”
Much to Flash’s delight there was a nervousness in her shifty gaze that hadn’t been there before.
He decided to return to the offensive while he was ahead. “It’s amazing… how pathetic your dilemma is, I mean.”
“What was that?!” Hatred flared in Tempest’s voice.
“Think about it: you are living with Twilight, yet you two couldn’t look more like business partners if you tried! Either you got rejected and you’re taking revenge on her by shoving away anypony who might possibly be attracted to her like a jealous—”
“I would never do that to her!”
Tempest’s horn flared up. Multicolored sparks dashed into different directions. Flash eyed her carefully, before realizing it had been involuntarily. A reflex, showing how close to the edge she was.
He moved closer to her and slammed his hoof on the floor. “That! That right there!” He poked at her chest, shooting daggers from his eyes. “You are jealous! And scared, that you might lose her. But I don’t give a damn! You wanna know why?”
Flash leaned in until their faces were almost touching. His volume dropped low enough for Tempest to barely hear him. “You’re too much of a scared little bitch to tell her how you feel. That’s why you hate me; I’m everything you’re not, and that’s why I’m better for her than you will ever be.”
A battle cry tore from her throat. Her forehooves raised into the air, followed by a spastic array of lights and fireworks exploding from her severed horn. Glass shattered from the shockwave. Flash raised his forehooves in time to clash with hers. He winced from the brightness of the sparkling magic shooting all over the room, some of it burning into his face and singing his coat.
Beyond the crackling magic and snarling between the rivals, another sound, distant and familiar, caught their attention.
“Tempest? What happened? Is everything alright?”
“What’s going on out there?
The fighting, hostility, and fireworks vanished like some pony flicked a light switch. Tempest and Flash stared at the pieces of shattered glass below the large clock, then at the one exit in the room. Rapid hoofbeats bared down their position.
If they were caught making this much of a commotion, Flash knew he would never hear the end of it. Shining would tear Flash a new one, and judging from the sickly look on Tempest’s face, Twilight would also have words for her.
Without a word, Flash used his wing to sweep together the glass on the floor while Tempest lifted the couch to help hide the evidence. This cost them what few precious seconds they had, Twilight and Shining’s arrival imminent.
Tempest cursed under her breath, eyes drawn to the broom closet next to the clock. “No choice. Get in.”
“What are—Whoa, hey!” Flash gasped as Tempest opened the door, practically threw him inside, and closed the door behind her as she shoved herself in the closet with him.
The closet was pitch black, save for the barest crack in the doorway that allowed the fireplace flames to shed faint light on their faces. To make matters worse, they were two ponies in a space made for probably half a pony: squeezed together so close Flash’s chest was practically glued to Tempest’s back.
Flash opened his mouth to question her lack of marbles when the door into the study swung open. Flash’s breath caught in his throat as he watched Shining and Twilight burst into the room.
“Huh? Could've sworn the noise came from here,” Twilight said.
“It did.” Shining approached the direction of the closet. At that moment, Flash realized the situation they were in.
Crammed into a closet with Tempest and in a position that left little to the imagination, no doubt being discovered now would give the wrong idea and get them both in even more trouble for “fraternizing” while on duty. Even worse, Twilight would catch them and think he had the hots for Tempest, thus losing any chance he had at getting close to her.
Oh damn. Oh damn. Oh damn…!
His heart raced mile a minute, deafening in his ears. He felt Tempest stiffen, breath held.
Shining stopped just before the door, eyes drawn to the clock. “Did this clock always miss it’s glass, Twily?”
She eyed the clock with a puzzled look. “No, not until this morning at least. Maybe somepony bumped into it?”
“Probably. Let me find Flash and see if he’s noticed anything.”
Good luck with that, chief.
“Wait, actually…” Twilight fired off just as Shining moved towards the exit. Hesitation slipped into her next words. “The glass can easily be replaced. Everything else looks fine.”
Shining paused. “You sound like you have something on your mind.”
“W-well, it’s been so long since we’ve seen each other, I was thinking you and I could have some sibling time together. Haven’t exactly gotten the chance to talk with just you and me all day.”
“Is that all? Why didn’t you just say that from the start?” Shining laughed heartily. “Alright, if we’re gonna do this, I have just the thing for the occasion. Hang tight for a minute.”
“Alright.” Twilight chirped and plopped herself onto the couch while Shining took off.
“You’ve gotta be kidding me…!” Flash whispered through gritted teeth.
“Be quiet..!” Tempest hissed. “I don’t want to be stuck in here anymore than you do.”
“I dunno,” Flash drawled playfully, “you were pretty damn eager to squeeze in here with me. And with the way you’re pressing that ass against me, well… at least you got a nice ass.”
“The second the coast is clear, I’m kicking your teeth in.”
It wasn’t long until Shining Armor returned, a red bottle and two wine glasses clutched in his magic. “Sorry for making you wait. Figured if we were gonna hang out by the fireplace, might as well enjoy a fine drink while we’re at it.”
“Don’t I feel special,” Twilight giggled.
“Well you should. I don’t bring out a bottle of imported red wine for just anypony.” Shining passed took a seat next to Twilight, passing a cup to her via magic.
“I know. Thank you, BBBFF.”
“Anytime, Twily.”
Flash frowned, riddled with envy as Shining filled their glasses. Were it not for Tempest, he just knew he would be on that couch with Twilight right now. Sharing drinks, chatting, and maybe, hopefully, getting close.
Instead he had to get stuck in a closet with the mulberry menace watching Shining live out his fantasy.
“Dream all you want. You don’t have a chance in Tartarus, anyway.” Tempest whispered.
Flash took a deep, easy breath through his nose, then lead his muzzle next to her ear. “Two things. First, you’re in the same shitty boat as I am, so don’t act like you’re above all this.”
A quiet, angry snort escaped Tempest. “At least I’m an adult about it. And the sec—”
“Fuck you.”
Tempest craned her neck just enough to throw a hot glare his way. Flash glared back. A tense moment passed before Tempest drew her eyes back to Twilight and Shining drinking.
“Still on the fence.”
...Wait, what?
Tempest stayed silent, observing the scene in the lounge with professional indifference. Flash threw the thought to the side for now and glanced back at his boss and love interest enjoying their time together.
Twilight marvelled at the red wine in her glass. “This one’s good. Better even than the one on mom’s birthday. Strong body, a firm, fruity finish...”
“It’s Griffonian,” Shining explained, before taking another sip himself. “Cadey got it gifted during our last visit. Though I’m surprised you’re a wine expert.”
“Formal invitations and state visits tend to make you one; if you leave it at few enough cups to remember the details.” She chuckled, then took another sip. “What, shocked your little sister is drinking alcohol?”
Shining laughed. “No, not since I caught you batshit drunk, with dad’s hip flask in your hoof.”
Twilight’s face turned red. “I-I was fourteen! I was curious… didn’t know I was supposed to wait between sips. That whisky burned like fire, but once I got used to it…”
“You emptied the whole flask, then threw up over your own notebook.”
Twilight threw her head back. Her angelic laughter filled the study. “Don’t remind me of that! It took me all week to copy it. You have no idea how embarrassed I was when I had to tell Celestia why my paper was overdue.”
“Plus side of being a guard,” Shiny admitted. “You learn to drink long before you reach a position where you could screw up that badly. Service really hardens you in every possible way.”
Twilight went silent. Her eyes met the dancing flames of the fireplace. “Yeah, you were always pretty tough. And strong. I liked that… it made me feel safe.”
“I ended up making it my job,” Shining shrugged. “Perhaps I was always a bit over-protective. Turns out there’s a way to earn money with that,” he smiled.
Twilight didn’t join in this time. Absentmindedly, she gazed at the raging flames, like there was a deeper truth hidden in the fireplace, just outside her reach.
“I liked having you close to me,” she eventually admitted, her voice almost a whisper. “Gosh, so much has changed. I miss you so much when we’re separate, you know that?”
He slowly nodded. “Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. First I joined the service, then you moved to Ponyville, then I moved to the Empire…”
“... with Cadance,” Twilight added inconspicuously.
“Well, yeah,” Shining agreed, dumbfound for a moment. Then realization seemed to dawn on him. “Wait, are you referring to… Twily, we promised each other to never bring it up again!”
Shining looked over his shoulder, towards the heavy wooden door of the study. His eyes nervously danced across the walls like they were eavesdropping.
If only he knew, Flash thought. But… what exactly are they referring to that’s making him this nervous?
“Yes, we did,” Twilight groaned with an edge of frustration.
She fell silent for so long Flash thought their conversation had ended. “Yet still,” she eventually added, “why? Don’t you… y’know, miss it?”
“Twilight!” Shining reeled back. “We talked about this. I’m married now. You know I love Cadance. We can’t ever—”
“Cadance wouldn’t know,” Twilight argued.
What the Tartarus are they talking about? They’re arguing as if—
Flash’s eyes went wide. Terrible dread dropped in his stomach.
Wait a... no. No no no, that’s not possible. No way they’re talking about—
“If we could do it again, without anyone ever finding out, without her getting hurt, would you?”
Shining’s breathing turned rampant. The wine glass in his hold began to tremble like an aspen leaf. “I— We—”
Twilight placed her wine glass on the ground and moved closer to him. Their horns were almost touching by the time she seemed satisfied with the new proximity. “You were my first,” Twilight quietly spoke. “I loved you more than I’ve ever loved another stallion. What we had before we both became royalty, before we moved so far apart… It was special.”
Flash’s jaw threatened to drop through the ground, the floor below, and the floor below that. No way!
Shining moved closer to her. Wrapping one hoof around her he embraced her. She lowered her head onto his shoulder. Ever so slightly she moved up and down, brushing her cheek against his neck in a gesture Flash could only describe as deeply affectionate. Then, raising her head once more, she planted a kiss on his cheek.
“Twily, I wish we could go back to those times. I truly do. But nowadays it’s too risky. The political impact it’d cause…”
To both Shining’s and Flash’s surprise Twilight’s horn ignited. A purple force field moved along the walls, windows, and door. There was a locking sound as the key turned by itself.
“A privacy spell?” Shining gasped. “You’re… absolutely serious about this?”
Twilight lowered her head until their horns touched. “I’ve never been more sure. I need you in my life again. I tried for years to move past it, but I just can’t.”
Shining looked around, again, nervousness in every motion. “...The spell is absolutely soundproof?”
Twilight grinned. “When did I ever botch up a spell? Nopony outside this room can hear us; we’re completely alone now.”
You’re only halfway right there, Flash thought.
Shining turned to face Twilight. They met each other’s gaze for a long moment.
Then they simultaneously pulled each other closer and kissed.
This was no sisterly kiss. The smack on the cheek from earlier had preserved at least some of it’s innocence. This was worlds beyond that. Their lips met in the flickering light of the fireplace in a way that wasn’t just hearty and deeply intimate. It was familiar to them.
Familiar—That was a term Flash swore then and there to never again use.
Their lips opened and two tongues met in a dance akin to the blazing of the flames behind them, equally bursting with energy. Twilight moaned softly and pulled her brother even closer. The way he held her mane, the manner her free hoof stroked along his side, it was a level of affection Flash wasn’t sure he had ever enjoyed with a mare himself. Not to this extent at least, with such a primeval fervor behind every movement.
This is… this is messed up on so many levels… damn it, why does it have to be so hot?! He gets a hot wife and his hot sister, yet all I get is—
It was only now Flash noticed Tempest’s racing heartbeat against his chest, reminding him he wasn’t by himself, let alone the only witness of this.
Shining released himself from Twilight’s embrace. His breathing was heavy, nervousness still flashed from his eyes. “W-wait a moment,” he stuttered.
Flash had never seen Shining stutter before. Ever.
“No,” Twilight answered, before throwing him onto his back. The soft bean bags they were on made it very easy for her.
That, and the fact that Shining didn’t resist. She swiftly followed and threw herself onto him, making him groan. “You’re not as light as you used to be,” he pointed out.
“Cadance’s heavier, I bet,” Twilight argued without a hint of shame in her voice.
“Cadance likes to be the bottom,” Shiny mumbled.
“How boring,” Twilight chuckled, before embracing him for another kiss.
“Could we… not mention her?” Shining begged between two kisses.
Twilight framed his head in her hooves. She mustered him for a second, then softly nodded. “You’re mine, anyway,” she whispered. Her hoof moved across his chest. “You always were, BBBFF.”
Shining chuckled and slowly shook his head, the smile never leaving his face. “And you always were more cocky when we were alone.”
She planted another kiss on his lips. Her hoof moved across chest, then downwards. Her lips followed. “Speaking of cocky,” she said, her head resting on his tummy, facing his crotch.
Flash saw her head move further down. The closet door restricted his field of view, but the kissing and slurping sound he heard spoke its own language. Heat, both of anger and arousal, coursed Flash’s blood.
...Damn you to Tartarus, Tempest. That could’ve been me right now!
Shining groaned in pleasure. He squirmed, breath coming out in shudders. He murmured Twilights name on occasion, eyes rolling into the back of his head while Twilight hummed in satisfaction. After a lengthy period of treatment that nearly crippled Flash with envy, Twilight emerged again. She licked her lips in a way that made Flash’s heart double its pace.
“I missed that too,” she said while brushing her head gently against his chest. “Everything of this.”
Shining planted a kiss on her horn. Gently and long-drawn, making her shiver during the whole thing.
“I love you,” she breathed, head still lowered onto Shining’s chest.
“I love you too,” he responded.
