Falling Rainbows
Chapter 1: Why you? (Edited version)
Load Full StoryNext ChapterYour life was fairly simple, everything has its place. You lived in a small log cabin and you had over fifty acres of land for your crops. You were just a simple farmer. You'd never try to compete with the Apples so you stuck mostly to growing vegetables, and you even had a wood mill on the side for any pony that might need it.
Your name was Deep Forest, you had a tan yellow body, with a dark forest green mane and tail, your cutie mark was a tall patch of grass, showing you that you had a talent for growing things and making things. A handy pony of sorts, just you weren't very good for the more technical stuff, that stuff baffled you beyond belief.
You had moved to Ponyville after spending a good amount of your time on the road, searching for just the right spot to call home. Now that you've found it, you had no desire to leave. You simply wanted to enjoy life to its fullest. You often see a lot of the crazy things that happens in town, but you merely tried to ignore it and keep to your own affairs.
You were starting to get rather low on firewood, you couldn't help but sigh. You'd need to make a trip into town. It wasn't that you hated traveling, you were just so used to being at home, that you never knew how to act around other ponies. It made you very nervous, especially around Pinkie Pie. You didn't know why, but that pony just rubbed you the wrong way. Not that you hated her, but it was just awkward.
“I guess I ought to get a moving or I'll never get back by sunset.” You spoke to yourself, as you put a fairly small satchel over your back, strapping it on, before locking the door behind you.
Ponyville was surprisingly rather quiet today. Every pony seemed to be minding their own business. That made things a lot smoother. You went up to Burnt Oak's wood stand.
“I'd like to buy some firewood, please.” you tip your hat towards the elder stallion out of respect, and place your bits upon the table.
“Well, howdy there young man. I reckon I've never seen you around here before. Are you new to Ponyville?”
“Well, sorta. I've been here a few times. I've already had a welcome party from Pinkie, it's just that I tend to keep to myself. It's quieter that way.” you reply a bit shyly, rubbing your front forehoof against your dark green bangs, brushing them out of your eyes. You wait patiently while Burnt Oak processes the order. You can't help glancing around and noticing a beauty like no other. There she was just chatting away with some other pony, with yellow fur, and a blazing mane. The pony you were staring at was none other than Rainbow Dash. She was by far the most gorgeous mare you had ever laid eyes on, but you quickly turned your gaze back to your business. Who were you kidding? A mare like that wouldn't even give you a second glance. You kicked at the ground with your front left foreleg, a bit disgusted at yourself for being so...normal.
“That's your decision, just know we are a friendly lot and are always eager to welcome our neighbors. If there's anything I can do for you, just let me know, alright?” smiled Burnt Oak.
You didn't know why but he smiled at you so sincerely as if he already knew you so well, despite having only meeting you recently. There was this certain sparkle in his eyes. Maybe you reminded him of a pony he had known? You weren't sure, so you shrugged and went on your merry way.
Your next stop was Princess Twilight's castle. You had been trying to get up the nerve to at least say hello for about a week now, but you really could use a book to help with your crops, and your old one was getting rather worn out. You thought perhaps she'd have something you could borrow for a bit. Nervously, you lifted your forehoof and tapped on the door three times.
You waited there patiently, a drop of sweat running down your brows, as you fidgeted in place. You almost jumped when the door opened, but you didn't see any pony. You looked down and realized it was Spike at the door.
“Hello, can we help you?” he asked you politely.
You had heard a lot about dragons, but he was nothing like any dragon you had ever heard of.
“Ah yes, could I speak to Miss Twilight Sparkle please?” you ask politely bowing your head ever so slightly towards the young dragon. He raised an eyebrow at you and crossed his arms.
“Hold on, be right back. Twilight! There's someone at the door that wants to see you.” he shouted through the long empty hallways.
You entered into the front of the large crystal castle, and tried not to seem overwhelmed by how magnificent it was. You had never seen a place as lovely as this. You could imagine how easy it would be to get lost in here. You were so distracted in your own thoughts, you jumped when you suddenly heard a female voice.
“You wanted to see me for something? Oh! Deep Forest. I haven't seen you around since your welcoming party. How have you been? Hopefully, Pinkie Pie hasn't startled you too much. We want every pony to feel welcome.” she smiled softly, batting a wink at you.
“Oh, um well Pinkie Pie is nice...” you say unsure really how to say to one of her friends that she sorta scared you with how excitable she was. “I was wondering if you had any good books on growing crops and stuff I could borrow. The one I have is getting rather old and worn out, and I heard you had a giant library here so yeah...” you scratched the back of your wild dark green mane nervously, trying not to fidget in front of the Princess.
“Oh, of course you can borrow a book. I have plenty of things on farming, is there a specific subject you were looking for? There's this one book I've lent out to Applejack, "Everything you ever wanted to know about farming and more" It's a great book! I've also got "Irrigation for the daft", "Agriculture and you", and "Crops and how to grow them.'' which one might you want?” replied Twilight Sparkle.
You couldn't help but smile as she seemed so excited at the mention of books in general, and it sounded like that first one had everything you'd need.
“Sure, I'll borrow that one thanks. I promise to take good care of it, and bring it back when I'm done with it.”
“Oh there's no rush. This is my spare copy. Gotta keep one for myself. I may not be a farmer, but it's really an interesting read.” she responded calmly, as if she wasn't worried about you possibly damaging the book. You'd make extra sure nothing happened to it. You placed the book in your snatchel and thanked her for her time. Now you had one more stop before heading home. Your stomach rumbled. You needed to go to the grocery store and pick up some lunch to eat. Once you got that taken care of then you'd go home and enjoy a hay sandwich and simply relax with your new book.
You headed out of the castle, after saying your farewells to both Twilight and Spike. You headed over towards the local market within town. You could always find the best crops here, and you wanted to make sure to stop by the Apple's stand as well. You never knew how to approach Applejack, she was another farmer too. Though you knew you'd never stand up to the Apple's. They had this town in the palm of their hooves.
“Hey Deep Forest, whatcha doing?” questioned a young chipper voice. You looked down, and noticed Apple Bloom walking beside you. She was just so cute, young and naive. You remembered when you were that cute. Seemed everything had changed since you left your home. You never planned on turning back. Things were much better now, than they had ever been before.
“I'm just getting groceries for my little home.” you smile softly towards the filly, petting her atop her red mane.
“Oh, that sounds boring. Don't you ever want to go on a thrilling adventure? Do something you never did before?” questioned Apple Bloom.
“I've thought about it yes, but I'm quite content with how things are. Sometimes you have to see the simple joys in life rather than always having to have something thrilling to get your heart pumping.” you explained as best you could. It wasn't likely she'd understand such a deep meaning at her young age, but still. She was an Apple, she'd see it sooner rather than later.
“Oh. Okay. Have fun Deep Forest.” smiled Apple Bloom, bouncing up and down as she went to meet up with her friends.
You went along with your normal routine, simply getting enough to last you for a good week at least. The town wasn't far so you could always come back if you needed more. After you had checked and double checked everything off of your list, you started to head back to your quaint little home.
Once you made it home, you put all your groceries away, in the cupboards and your fridge, before sitting down to enjoy a hay sammich out in your front yard. You enjoyed the simple pleasures life gave you. You never asked for more, when all of a sudden a rainbow maned mare swooped down in front of you. You blinked curiously, wondering why in the world a mare like her would be here on your little piece of land.
“Hey there, Deep Forest how's it going?” smirked Rainbow Dash, letting her wings flap out by her sides, before shifting them against her body, craning her neck, and letting out a sigh of relief.
You weren't really sure what to think of that look she was giving you. It was like she was staring you down for something, and right now you weren't certain if that was a good thing or not. It honestly made you more nervous than a deer in front of headlights.
“Um...can I help you miss Dash?” you asked her politely as you took a deep gulp of a breath, a drop of sweat running down your brow. You fidgeted a bit nervously.
“Nah, just wanted to drop in and say hello. Enjoying that sandwich huh? Hayburgers are nice and all, but you should try hay steaks they're amazing.”
You didn't want to offend her, so you just raised an eyebrow. “I don't eat hay steak miss Dash but thank you for the suggestion.”
“Lame, but to each their own I guess. So...what are you up to today? Anything interesting?” she questioned.
“Um...well I was just planning on getting my fields ready for the harvest. Here there's supposed to be a good rain coming in a few days, will be good for my crops.”
“You really need to get out more. All you do is work, work, and more work. Oh! I know. I should take you to Las Pegasus. There's a giant roller coaster there! And a bunch of things to do. Applejack can't go so I really need a riding buddy, what do you say? Interested?” she smirked, batting those long eyelashes at you.
She may not know it, or maybe she did, you honestly had no clue. This mare had you by the...your eyes darted back and forth, as you nervously fidgeted your forehoof into the ground a bit, trying to think of how to respond. You weren't really a city type, and going to a place like Las Pegasus, well it just seemed out of a place for a simple country stallion like yourself, but how can you say no to her?
“Um...miss Dash I mean no offense but why would I even want to go to a place like that?” you ask and immediately you regret asking such a stupid question. Her eyes looked at you almost like a puppy. Big wide eyed stare, as her lips pouted forward, and she kneeled by your hooves.
“Come on please Deep Forest...” she pouted.
“Um... I guess if that's what you really want I can go.” you replied. You weren't sure why but feeling her soft fur so close made you both happy and a bit sad at the same time. There was no way a stallion like you would ever have a chance with a mare like her. She was just too awesome for the simple life. She'd grow bored of you in a hurry, so you never actually told her you admired her beauty, physique, and grace. Not to mention how freaking adorable she could be. Nope. You'd have better luck with Applejack and she and Rarity kind of had a thing. A thing that made your manhood not want to think about it for very long.
“Awesome! I just knew you'd say yes.” she replied suddenly you felt two arms wrapping around you, and Rainbow's face snugly resting on your left shoulder blade. You couldn't help blushing slightly, but you would blame it on the heat if any pony dared to question you!
“So...um maybe I should go get ready...” you suggest, mainly because you were all sweaty not just from working all day, but having her this close to you made you really nervous. You weren't sure whether to embrace her back, or simply allow her to hug you so closely. You were so confused. No mare ever really paid much mind to you before and now suddenly one of the most talented, radiant, and most beautiful mare you had ever laid eyes on.
“Get ready? You don't need to dress up or anything special! Just go and grab a quick shower and pack a few bags and we can head out in the morning. Meet me by the train station at eight am sharp!”
You blinked and furrowed your brows a bit. Maybe she didn't know you rose with the sun. You'd be up for a few hours by the time you had to leave. You rubbed your foreleg against your cheek. She finally let go of you and seemed to dash off in a hurry. You always enjoyed watching her fly. Just the grace in it all was simply astonishing.
“Wow, I wonder why she chose me...” you spoke to yourself as if you suddenly find an answer. Honestly, you were stumped. Maybe if you talked to some pony that knew Rainbow Dash better you'd be able to figure out why she asked you, why she seemed so happy to hold you so close. It just didn't make sense to you that she of all ponies would want some pony like you.
“Hmm...who should I ask. Oh I know!” you almost slapped yourself silly for not thinking of it sooner. Who was the one pony in this town that knew everything about every pony. Pinkie Pie! Of course. You should probably go home and get cleaned up first. Your face was beaded with sweat from a hard days' work. It was now that you appreciated more than ever you're so pale yellow fur, made the sun not feel so darn hot. You wiped your forehead and trotted back to your little log cabin. You took off your hat, a lot similar to Applejack's stetson, but this one your own father had given to you a long time ago, letting your rather wild dark green mane fall over the sides of your face, a bit of your bangs tickling at your snout as you sneezed before heading inside.
You almost jumped back in surprise when you discovered a certain pink pony was already here. Did she have psychic powers? Sometimes this pony scared you, but she was always so friendly you couldn't possibly hate her.
“Hey there, I've been waiting FOREVER for you to get here! You're later than usual. So how's the farming going?” questioned Pinkie Pie. She acted so innocent, like she hadn't totally broken into your house without asking for your permission. You couldn't help thinking what she might have been doing all this time. Certainly, not sitting there patiently waiting for him. You could see Fluttershy being that patient, but Pinkie Pie? Celestia, you were going to have to check everything and anything to make sure nothing was missing. You didn't think her a thief but still...better safe then sorry.
“Um...hello there Pinkie Pie what brings you here?” you ask softly, lifting your front left forehoof and extending it towards her.
“Oh silly! You don't need to introduce yourself or shake hooves with me every time we see each other. Besides I know you so well! But anyways I came here because my Pinkie sense told me you wanted to ask me something super important. So what is it huh?” she asked as she bounced up and down in the soft recliner, more excited than ever.
“Um...well there was something I wanted to ask you.” you say before pausing. “However, it would be nice if you wouldn't just barge into my house without permission.”
“Oh! Silly me. Sorry the door was open so I figured you were home, and here I discovered no pony was here! Don't worry I promise I didn't mess with anything, and that's a pinkie promise.” smiled Pinkie Pie giggling.
“Well...it's about Rainbow Dash. I was wondering what you could tell me about her.”
“Oh...I see. Well there's a lot to know. Was there something specific you wanted to know, or did you just want to know as much as you could?”
“Well, it's just she stopped by my place a bit away, and asked me to go with her to Las Pegasus to try out a coaster with her, and I'm just wondering why she would ask me of all ponies.”
Pinkie Pie chuckled and laughed so hard she fell backwards on the chair. “Ah, ha, ha, ha. That's funny. You mean you can't see it? I shouldn't spoil things, but she's been keeping her eyes on you for awhile now.”
“She has?” you asked even more puzzled then you were before. Why would Rainbow Dash pay any mind to some pony like you? It wasn't like you were anything special, you were anything but. You were just an average pony that enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, and never asked for anything more.
“You really should just ask her yourself. I know a lot about Rainbow Dash, she's my best friend, but even I can't read minds.” replied Pinkie Pie still giggling and laughing. For some reason, you had a feeling in the pit of your stomach, she knew more than she let on.
“Um...okay. Thanks I think?” you say as you might as well get ready for your trip. You had no idea what you should bring on a trip to a city like Las Pegasus. Well you'd probably need just a few small things. A hair brush for your mane, maybe a blanket if you had to stay overnight. You weren't sure how long you'd be there. Then you thought about if you stayed the night would you and Dash share a room together? You blushed darkly and quickly shook that thought out of your head.
“I'm just going to go have fun in a town full of crowded ponies with a mare that is way too special for me. Nothing more, nothing less.” with a soft sigh, you finished packing, just a small bag. Then you decided rather quickly, you needed to get some rest for your trip tomorrow. You laid down in your bed, covered yourself up, and shut off the lights, but you couldn't sleep. There was way too much on your mind. This was going to be a long weekend, but you were sure everything would work out alright. With a soft smile forming on your lips, you slowly drifted off to the realm of Luna, and hoped for things to go well.
Dawn came much faster than expected. You heard a loud thap thap, thumping against your door, and a loud energetic voice of that cyan Pegasus you sorta had a crush on.
“Hey, Deep Forest are you awake yet? Come on we need to get going or we'll miss the train.” shouted Rainbow Dash.
You didn't have time to eat breakfast even, but you picked up your small bag and quickly trotted down to meet her.
“What's that for?” she asked pointing to the bag.
You freeze, as you fidget a bit, planting a forehoof against the welcoming mat. “Well, I wasn't sure how long we'd be gone, so I just packed a few things.”
“Oh, right. Yeah, that was my bad. I didn't really tell you, but I got tickets for the weekend, so we'll be there at least until Monday morning. Then I'll have to go back to being an egghead again...”
“I would think it would be quite an honor to be teaching the future of Equestria.” you reply, thinking maybe she just didn't see how much she was making a difference.
“I guess, but I don't know, there's just so much more I want to do. Kind of cramps my style to be stuck at school most of the week. Though I admit the after school sessions with Spike, Big Mac and Discord are always worth waiting for.” smirked Rainbow Dash, a smug grin forming on her lips.
“Oh?” you reply, having no idea what she was referring too. You pick up your bag, and you start to make your way towards the train station. You had no idea what this weekend would bring for the two of you. Would you enjoy your time with Rainbow Dash or would the city be too much for you to bare? You had to keep yourself composed, after all, Rainbow Dash was really excited about this. You'd hate to let her down, because you weren't as thrilled.
