Falling Rainbows
Chapter 2: A Wild Ride
Previous Chapter“Come on Deep Forest! The train is boarding, and I am not missing it.” Rainbow Dash shouted as she dashed into the train. You could only blink and furrow my brows a bit, as you straighten your stance to a full out run, and barely made the train in time. Phew. Either you were lucky, or the conductor had sympathy for a pony whom was trailing Rainbow Dash's flank. To think that you would be this close to the legendary Wonderbolt, not to mention an element of harmony. You almost bumped right into Rainbow Dash, you blinked and were about to apologize for your actions, when she turned to help you up.
“Are you really so excited that you can't help but run here like a maniac?” she questioned curiously, and then chuckled. “Of course you are. Who wouldn't be. This is going to be the trip of a lifetime. Hang onto your hat.” Rainbow Dash then took a seat by the window, so you sat down on the outside. You couldn't help looking at her. You were just in awe of what you were seeing. Rainbow Dash, riding in a train... with you! You were just a normal pony, nothing special. You couldn't comprehend why she even cared. She could have invited any creature, but yet she had chosen you.
You didn't know why you were fussing over this so much in your head, but there had to be a reason. Why you? Why did this amazing, super talented mare, pick a normal run of the mill stallion like you? You honestly felt baffled. You let out a heavy sigh, and simply smiled genuinely. You shouldn't be asking yourself why, you should just be enjoying yourself. You couldn't help noticing Rainbow Dash had already drifted off to sleep with her headphones on. She looked so darn cute, you thought, and then she started to snore. Never did you think you'd hear something more ear twitching than a rooster's crow at five am in the bucking morning. Though you were rather used to strange noises coming from who knows where, but from her? You didn't expect this, however you couldn't stop smiling, even as the other ponies on the train covered their ears, you found it rather adorable.
Though it was very blatantly clear that the other ponies didn't agree with you as they stared at the two of you with death glares. You bit your bottom lip, unsure what you could do in order to ease their pain. You decided to try not to focus on the group of complete strangers, and focused instead on Rainbow Dash. After all, no pony in their right mind wouldn't want to pay attention to her. Even as you stared at her, you couldn't help getting lost animist your own thoughts, even as the train began to roll down the tracks towards Las Pegusus.
You couldn't help wondering why Rainbow Dash would choose a pony like you. It's not like you were anything special. You had been born to a family in Manehattan. Yeah...that's right, you were a city born colt, but that life just wasn't for you. You watched as your mother struggled to earn a living by being a waitress. Your father was often so tied up with his own work that he was never home. That was no life for either of them. Your mom ended up leaving your father, though you did try to keep in touch. Sadly, your father has yet to reply. However, you decided once you got your cutie mark in growing things that you were meant for more than the city lights. You were meant for so much more.
You didn't want much though, so decided to use the money you had to buy land in Ponyville, and yeah it was hard at first. Really hard to start growing your seeds and planting a future for yourself, but you never gave up. Applejack's farm often inspired you. She had her family helping her and you were just one pony. If you could do this, then any pony could be whatever they wanted to be.
As you came back to reality, you realized suddenly that Rainbow Dash had her head laying against your shoulder. You tensed up a bit, and took a deep gulp. Of course with her headphones on, she'd never hear you, even if you tried calling out to her. You gently shook her to see if she might be startled by the movement but she was in a deep sleep. Likely, she'd be asleep the whole ride. You bit your bottom lip. What were you supposed to do if you had to go use the little colt's room? She'd end up falling onto your seat.
You tried not to think about how comforting it felt to have Rainbow Dash so close to you. Any pony would love to be in your place right now. You could feel the sweat dripping down your face, as you gulped nervously. Wondering how much longer this ride would take. You knew it wouldn't be too long, but you weren't sure how long you could endure not well...not doing the things your mind clearly thought about doing. Even a simple gesture such as wrapping your arm around her could be seen as very wrong by her. But you weren't about to try anything. After all...this was Rainbow Dash.
Suddenly the train came to a jerking stop, and it took all of your willpower to keep Rainbow Dash from slamming her head into the next seat, you cradled her tightly against your frame even as you yourself let out an oomph of pain, grimacing a bit as you glanced down to be certain she was unharmed. Realizing you had your arm around her, you tried to take it away quickly, however she started to stir in your arms. You couldn't help but gulp nervously, and try to act natural.
“Hey Deep Forest...” Rainbow Dash yawned out, rubbing at her eyes with her left forehoof, before gaining her composure. “Did I sleep through the entire train ride?”
“Kind of?” You responded not really wanting to offend her, or upset her in any way, even if she looked cute right now. Though, maybe you were biased. Rainbow Dash was the mare you had always dreamed of getting to meet after all. And to think a simple farm stallion like you was about to go on a grand adventure with one of the heroes of Equestria. Truly, you had to pinch yourself to make sure you weren't just dreaming this all up. That is was as real as you thought it to be.
“Eh, it's whatever. At least we're finally here. Felt like it took forever.” Rainbow sighed, before getting up out the seats, felting her grabbing ahold of you by the hooves and before you even had time to blink, we were off of the train.
“Rainbow Dash...do we really need to go so fast? I can't keep up with you.” You admitted honestly. It wasn't in your nature to lie, especially to her. Besides, you wanted to enjoy this vacation with her, there was no need to rush.
“Yeah...I suppose you're right. I'm just so used to going fast. It's almost impossible for me to slow down. But I'll give it a try, at least during this vacation. Now we need to book our room. Follow me.” Rainbow Dash replied, as she was about to fly off again at full speed, but you managed to grab at her rainbow colored tail at the last second, giving her a soft glare, Only to gesture at your sides with a forehoof, reminding her as to what exactly you lacked.
“Oh...right. My bad.” Sighing a bit, you smiled towards Rainbow Dash. You knew she didn't mean anything by it. This was just normal for her. Though it was hard for you not to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of ponies here. Everywhere you looked, there was a pony of every kind and nature, and you had to quickly catch your breath. “Calm down, Deep Forest.” You told yourself, there’s was no need to panic. You were here on vacation to have a good time with the mare of your dreams. Not that she even knew that you liked her. Not like she even cared. You were still surprised she asked you to come. She could've asked any pony, or any creature for that matter.
“What do you mean the rooms are booked!” questioned Rainbow Dash. Her nose scrunched, as fury was evident in her eyes.. You knew there was no way she'd come this far, only to be turned away by them not having rooms.
“I'm sorry, madam but the rooms are booked. I'm afraid there is nothing I can do about it. You are welcome to take it up with hotel management if you have a complaint. I am simply doing my job.” replied the stallion. You noticed he had dark black locks, and a light blue coat. It was hard to tell what kind of pony he was with him behind the counter, but since you couldn't see a horn under his hat, you knew he wasn't a unicorn. And it didn't seem like he had wings either. Meaning he was an earth stallion like you were. You dared to approach the counter with a more calm mind.
“Good sir, are you certain there isn't any place for us to stay? My friend and I have really been looking forward to this vacation, and it would be awfully disappointing to have to go home now.” You explained, doing your best to look sympathetic to both the hotel bell keep, and to your mare friend Rainbow Dash. Your mare friend, you quickly shook that lewd thoughts out of your head.
“Listen, I'd really like to help you if I could, but as I told your friend here. The rooms are booked.”
As the stallion spoke an older mare with lavender coat, and pink mane and tail, her wings folded at her sides, glasses atop her baby blue eyes, and a mark of three hearts with a halo over top as her cutie mark from the back of the line stepped forward.
“Mr. Bell Keeper. I'm sorry to interrupt you, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to cancel my reservation. My little boy back home is really sick, and I can't with good conscience stay here any longer.” spoke an older mare.
“Oh...I'm so sorry to hear that. If you go to management and speak with our staff, I'm sure they can do something for you. I do hope your little one gets better.” replied Bell Keeper softly as he took the keys into his hooves once more. You watched him as he smiled at us. “Due to circumstances, I now have a room key I can spare. However...it's only a one bedroom. Is that alright with you two?” he questioned, not wanting to assume that we were an item. You couldn't stop your cheeks from growing hotter at the question, and trying your darn-est to not fidget in place at the thought of being Rainbow Dash's colt friend.
“We'll take it!” Exclaimed Rainbow Dash, before you could even make a counter argument, how you didn't really see how this was going to work. You mean granted, you were sure there would be a couch...at least you hoped so, or you weren't sure how you'd survive not wanting to cuddle up closely with her. And even if that meant getting your flank kicked out of the room, it'd be worth every ounce of pain.
“Here you go, enjoy your stay.” replied the bell keep. You just sighed as Rainbow Dash had already taken off towards the room. You had to outright run to even have a chance to keep up with her.
“Rainbow Dash...wait for me!” You panted heavily, trying my best to keep pace with her, but you knew it was impossible. There was no way you were keeping up with an athlete like her.
Las Pegasus was huge, and you thought Manehattan was gigantic, but somehow this place felt even grander, that Rainbow Dash was just a blur in the distance. You weren't going to lose her though, not when you had come this far. It took all of your effort to keep pace behind her, and luckily you managed to not lose her, only stopping once she finally found the room we had gotten, and unlocked the door. You landed on the doormat with a thud, panting heavily as if you had just run a marathon.
Rainbow Dash halted in her steps, and grinned sheepishly back at you, rubbing the back of her mane with her left forehoof, whistling softly. “Whoops. I went too fast again didn't I? I swear I didn't mean too. It's just so hard to not go fast, ya know?”
You didn't answer her, you just held up my hoof as a way of saluting. You were still trying desperately to breathe, let alone respond. You gained some composure after a few minutes of her just standing there beside you. She looked worried and concerned for your well being. You stood up on all four hooves, and grinned, wiping your forehead with a forehoof.
“Aww, come on Rainbow Dash, you know I am not taken off my game so easily. Though let's try not to do this every time we go somewhere. I'm not sure I'd survive.” you replied softly, daring to nuzzle your head against hers.
“Woah...no need to get all sappy on me here. So let's check out this room shall we?” she asked curiously as she unlocked and opened the door, and stepped inside.
You had been to hotel rooms before, but even as you entered this one, you couldn't help but feel a drop of sweat running down my cheeks. You fidgeted nervously on your hooves, staring at the single King size bed. Sure...there was plenty of room for us each to have our own spot, but we'd still be sleeping in the same bed. Your cheeks flushed deeper, as you tried to focus on anything else. Looking around the room, you had a pretty nice fifty inch flat screen tv, with a mini fridge beside it for keeping food and drinks.
Then as you turn your head away from the bed, you found a door that, you assumed to be the bathroom, but when you opened it, you discovered it was actually a walk in closet. You blinked, and then turned your gaze back to the room once more. On each side there were dressers for keeping clothes in, two night stands with lamps to each side of the bed. Lastly, the door to the actual bathroom. Wanting relief, You dashed into the bathroom excusing yourself to Dash, and telling her, you'd be right back. Once the door was shut, you sunk down to my haunches, and took a few deep, and long breaths.
“Calm down, Deep Forest...it's just a vacation. There's no reason to panic. There's no reason to let your emotions get the better of you. You can do this. Just relax.”
“Hey Deep Forest, are you almost done in there? You said you'd be right back and it's been two minutes already!”
You scramble to your hooves, and hurry to flush the toilet. “Coming.” then you wash your forehooves at the sink, dry them off with a towel. After that you finally answer the door. There she was, giving you the cold hard stare, sighing a bit.
“Shessh, that was almost five minutes. And I thought Rarity took forever.” snorted Rainbow Dash, flapping her wings in the air, and crossing her forearms around her chest. You raised a forehoof up into the air to say something in response, but then you shake your head, it was probably best to keep your mouth shut in this instance.
“Now are you ready to go to the amusement park? Now that we've gotten our room, I want to ride the roller coaster. Granny Smith gave me this badass pass that lets us skip the line!”
“That's really nice of her. She's quite feisty once you get to know her.” You reply with a chuckle. Rainbow Dash rolled her eyes at you.
“Yeah...I totally thought she was a total bore at first, but once I got to really know her, she's a lot more interesting than most ponies think! Heck, she even did things even I didn't think were possible. She's crazy, but tons of fun.”
“Yeah, but she knows what she's doing, and I'm sure you'll learn too. It takes time for things to grow y'know?” You smiled softly.
“So...remind me, why are we still talking when there's a rollercoaster with our name on it?”
“Really? Did some pony actually put your name on the coaster?” You questioned thinking for a split second she was serious.
“Ugh, it's just a saying! Now come on we haven't got all day!” shouted Rainbow Dash, rolling her eyes. She grabbed for my hoof, and before you knew it, she was flying you down towards the coaster. You tried your best not to panic, but you were scared shit less. Finally, Rainbow Dash dropped you down near the front of the line. The roller coaster was huge, and had a ton of loops all around it. You could feel the adrenaline already rushing through your body, and you hadn't even gotten in line yet.
Rainbow Dash had already gotten herself in place, and you quickly scooted beside her, giving apologetic looks to the ponies behind you. You couldn't even imagine having to wait that long. The line went on and on, and went throughout the park. You couldn't help scooting closer to Dash, to the point you and her bodies were snugly pressed against each other, and that made you just a bit nervous, but at least you'd be on the ride soon, and all those loops would distract you from thinking about how much you cared about Rainbow, and how much you wished you had a lick of a chance with her.
It didn't take long until it was your turn. The ride operator gave instructions to pull down the lap bar, and keep your hooves inside the ride at all times. You sat on the far left, as Rainbow Dash took the right. She had this huge grin on her face. You couldn't help but shake with fear.
“How fast does this thing go?”
“Not as fast as me, but it's still awesome.” replied Rainbow with a simple shrug of her shoulders. “What are you all worked up for? It's just a coaster. No biggie.”
“Alright enjoy the ride.” spoke the instructor. And you took one last few seconds to catch your breath as the carts started to climb uphill. It was a slow climb. To Rainbow Dash it probably felt like forever, but for you, it wasn't long enough. Once to the top, you dared to look down.
“Holy Apples!” You screamed as the ride began it's downwards spiral. Though out of the corner of your eye, Rainbow Dash was screaming too. To see a mare like her, affected by something like this, reassured you, maybe she wasn't totally out of your league. Maybe you had what it took to be her special somepony. The loops were by far the worst part of the whole thing. By the time the ride was over, you were more than ready to get out. Rainbow Dash jumped out of the cart before you, doing a spin move, and pretending like she had enjoyed the ride, even though you knew it was just an act. You stood up and stepped out of the cart. You smiled softly, and trotted next to Dash, with a grin, you asked softly.
“So if that was just the start of this wild ride, what's next?” you asked softly. Wondering how this could possibly get better then her. She was simply amazing, and the more time you got to spend time with her, was like heaven. Of course, she didn't know that, but you were considering telling her...you quickly shook that thought out of your head. No that was crazy. There was no way a mare like her would want a normal average stallion like you. And there was no way you were about to ruin your friendship by making things awkward.
Author's Note
I apologize that this took so long! But it's finally here. Life has been stressful, but I'd never let my followers down. I hope you are all enjoying this. And let me know what kind of awkward scenarios, Deep Forest might find himself in.
