Chapter 3: Ambush on Yavin IV

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

The Consular Class Cruiser sailed through Hyperspace at an incredible speed. The troopers inside readied themselves for a fight. Luna checked her carbine, then looked around at her troopers.

They were in pursuit of Commander Skywalker, who foolishly followed a rogue fighter that appeared over Muunilinst. They had no idea who was in that fighter, but the clones were not going to take any chances. Some readied grenade launchers, one trooper, Ghost carried his Z-6 Rotary Cannon, and the rest made sure their power cells were fully charged up before they hit the surface.

The ship lurched, meaning the ship has exited Hyperspace. Luna made her way to the bridge, where the crew of 5 were waiting. She walked up to the lead pilot.

“Ace, where is the Commander?” She was expecting the Jedi to still be dog fighting with the rogue fighter, but neither ship could be seen in the space around Yavin IV.

“On the surface, ma’am.” The pilot responded. “Tracker can give you a better read than me.” Luna nodded and turned to the clone manning the radar system.

“Commander Skywalker’s tracker shows his fighter landing here.” The clone pointed to a small dot on the planet. “The area is a massive jungle, with an old ruin nearby. There isn’t enough space for us to land.”

“Then make room. Have our cannons blast the trees to give us enough space near his fighter. I’m not taking chances.” The clone crew didn’t hesitate to follow her order. Once the ship entered orbit, the pilots turned the ship so that the lower cannons would face the landing site. With the push of a button, the cannons blasted at the surrounding area. Within seconds, the entire area was scorched and the surrounding trees were nothing but ash.

Luna turned back to her troopers, who were all waiting for the doors to open. She grabbed her blaster, placed her helmet on her head, and stood before her 12 man squad. The ship shook as it touched the ground, and the doors opened up. The moment it did, the troopers ran out. They quickly hit the mud and surrounded the ship.

“Secure the area.” Luna ordered.

“Captain.” Luna snapped to attention as Commander Skywalker approached.

“Commander Skywalker.” The alicorn acknowledged.

“Obi-wan?” The Jedi asked, an eyebrow raised.

“Yes, sir.”

“Gave you orders to follow me.” he stated.

“Yes, sir.” Luna answered. Skywalker glared, making Luna feel uncomfortable, and a bit annoyed. Normally, a Jedi was thankful for the escort. Afterall, this was a trap, surely some back up wouldn’t hurt.

“Fine, leave two men to protect the ship. The rest of you split up, prepare to sweep the jungle.” With that, he turned to walk back to his fighter. Luna glared at her commander before adding on.

“I want teams of three. If you see something that isn’t the Commander or a clone, blast it.”

“Yes ma’am.” “On it.” Thunder echoed across the sky. Luna looked up to see dark clouds floating toward them. Great, a storm, just what she needed. Whoever the Commander was chasing would be a lot harder to track.

She quickly joined up with Skywalker, who didn’t even acknowledge her presence. The teams marched off into the jungle, moving in different directions to cover more ground. They were all unaware of the pair of eyes watching them from the shadows.

Ghost marched alongside two of his brothers, Bravo and Easy. They scanned their surroundings with care, not knowing what lay behind the vines and trees of the jungle. Thunder continued to boom above them but no rain has fallen and no lightning has struck.

Ghost stood at the front of the formation, as Bravo was in the middle, and Easy was in the rear. They watched each other with care, until a noise distracted them all. It sounded like a rock flying through the air. A big rock.

There was a loud series of bangs from behind them. Both Bravo and Ghost turned to see Easy was gone, his rifle left on the ground. Ghost ran over to check it out while Bravo covered him. The trooper looked around, there was no sign of Easy. it was like he vanished. There was a thud, followed by the sound of crushed grass. Ghost turned to see Bravo was now gone, without a trace. The clone attempted to use his radio, but all he got was static. The storm was messing up their comms. Kriff.

Ghost readied his blaster, rotating the barrels of the Z-6 cannon. He had to move and fast. He made his way down the path. He could hear rushing water, meaning he was near a river.

He was right. It was wide and deep, and the only way to the other side was a fallen tree. The clone carefully walked up to the tree, then examined it closely. It was large and thick, so it wouldn’t break on him. He had to get to the other side, he had to reach the other teams before it was too late. He had to warn the others. So, the clone climbed onto the tree and began making his way across.

He was about halfway across when something picked him up, and he was thrown into the water below. He tried to scream, but the water quickly flooded his helmet. Ghost tried to swim, but the weight of his armor, the thickness of the water, and the force pushing down on him made sure he would never get out of that river ever again. His lungs were on fire, begging for air. But he could provide none. He struggled and struggled until his limbs grew tired, and he could no longer move.

His brain began to shut down as it wasn’t getting the oxygen he needed. Within a few seconds, Ghost knew no more.

Killjoy watched in shock as his rifle was crushed by an unseen force, then that same unseen force violently thrashed him against a tree before sending him flying through the air.

Thatcher was dragged to the floor with such force that his helmet flew from his head. A red lightsaber quickly made sure he wouldn’t miss it.

Dodger screamed as he was thrown in several directions before his head was buried in a tree.

Wallace was slammed against a tree, he could feel his spine break in several places, giving him great pain before he blacked out.

Ace hid in the small compartment with a blaster pistol. The screams of his crew and the hum of a lightsaber could be heard on the other side of the door. He shouldn’t be hiding. But the assailant was too fast and too deadly for them to handle. He was just a pilot, he stood no chance. No more of a chance than the rest of the crew.

The screams died out, but the him of the lightsaber remained. Ace could see the blood red glow through the window. He hid further into a corner as eyes peered through the glass. He prayed to whatever would listen to save him. To keep him safe so that others might be able to get away. It felt like an eternity, but finally, the eyes went away, and the red glow and hum of the lightsaber dimmed.

Ace felt so much relief. He let out the breath he had been holding. He wished he held onto that breath, as the sudden crushing force choking his windpipe guaranteed he would never take another one.

Anakin stopped as he felt a great disturbance. As if several lives were suddenly snuffed out. Luna stopped and looked around.

“Something’s not right.” he said ominously. “I can feel it.” Birds chirped innocently, but it did little to drown out the cry of a clone being dragged across the ground.

Luna and Skywalker ran back to the clearing to find nothing damaged, and a single trooper picking himself off the ground.

“Trooper?!” Anakin called out before looking around, completely confused.

“Bravo?” Luna asked as she approached the trooper. “Are you alright? Where are the others?” Before he could answer, the Consular Ship exploded into a fireball. Luna was thrown back by the blast as Bravo was completely consumed. Anakin shielded his eyes before looking to his own fighter. His eyes widened in horror as he saw something.

“R4!” The astromech droid inside of Anakin’s fighter bleeped and blinked in rapid succession before the small fighter also exploded. Luna quickly recovered and used her magic to grab her blaster. Skywalker looked to the flames that were once two Republic ships as a third presence approached. The fire parted, allowing the figure to step through.

Skywalker glared at the figure. He could sense the same dark force within that the rogue pilot had. It was the same person. “I’m going to make you pay for what you’ve done.” He growled.

Luna said nothing as she aimed her blaster at the new target. The figure removed its hood, revealing a bald Dathomirian Zabrak female.

“Come padawan.” she said, her voice hissing and scratchy. “Your fall will by my ascension to the Sith.” She activated two blades, their red light illuminating her gothic clothing. Neither side moved, waiting to see who would make the first move. Anakin activated his lightsaber, then waited. Luna aimed…

The Sith woman charged, Skywalker counter-charged, and Luna fired three bolts at the target. She blocked all three with ease before parrying a blow by Skywalker. Luna realized she wouldn’t have a chance at firing another shot, so she did as she trained to do. She placed the blaster on her back, replacing it with a vibro-blade. She waited for an opportunity to move in and found it.

The woman jumped over Anakin, and tried to take a swipe at him. He ducked and turned to face her. Luna flew in and tried to slash at the woman’s back, but a lightsaber blocked the blow. She kicked the alicorn in the chin, knocking her off balance. The pony slammed into a tree.

The Sith tried to cut her open, but Skywalker managed to drag Luna out of the way before she could be hit. The sabers cut through the tree, sending it crashing to the ground. The woman growled before attacking again. She never got the chance as Skywalker pushed her back with the Force.

She spotted several thick branches on the ground. She threw them at Skywalker as he attempted to charge forward. He cut through every branch sent his way. Once he landed, she tried again, sending branches from multiple directions. He cut them all down, all except one, which flattened him against a tree.

Before she could attack, Luna charged in and quickly went on the offensive. The alicorn used her training; to throw her opponents off their game, so that they couldn’t use the Force or their lightsabers effectively. If there was one thing she, her sisters, and her brothers were good at, it was killing Force Users.

The Sith blocked every blow, but she was forced to back peddle to avoid the violent slashes of the trooper. A parry from her turned out to be a big mistake as her left handed lightsaber was knocked from her hand. She tried to correct herself, but a kick to the stomach forced her to drop the other lightsaber and crouch down to soften the pain.

The alicorn raised her blade to swing the final blow, but a sudden burst of the Force knocked her onto her back. The woman jumped high, disappearing into the trees. A few seconds later, her lightsabers followed. Skywalker recovered from the branch attack and helped Luna to her hooves. They looked up before jumping into the air.

Anakin used the Force to jump onto a large branch while Luna hovered nearby with her wings. The two looked around when suddenly, Skywalker’s branch collapsed under him. Luna dove to catch him, but she never got the chance as a flying lightsaber cut through her left wing. The alicorn screamed in pain as she fell to the earth below, her body going one way, and her torn off wing going another.

Anakin quickly used the Force to grab a vine, then caught the alicorn before she could fall to her death. He swung low to the ground, rolling on the floor as he wrapped around Luna. Once they stopped, he got onto his knees to look her over. Her wing was gone, along with some fur and flesh that surrounded the stub. There was no bleeding, as the intense heat of the blade cauterized it completely. He removed her helmet to give her more room to breathe. The alicorn tried to control her breathing, but he could hear the pain behind it. He knew how that felt as his eyes unconsciously shifted to his robotic arm. This was all his fault.

He was the one who foolishly chased after the Sith Warrior, ignoring his master’s orders. He was the reason those troopers were killed, and now Luna was hurt in a way only he could understand. Anakin thought about the Captain as a friend, and it was obvious she did too. When they first fought side by side, they earned each other’s respect. Now he surely lost it with this stupid stunt.

“C-Commander.” Skywalker’s eyes widened as he looked down at the injured Luna. She tried to get up, much to Anakin’s distress. “Go… go get her.” The padawan was surprised. Did she seriously think he would leave her here? “I’ll head back to the clearing and see if the beacon… still works. You need to finish that shabuir.”

Anakin stared at her for a second, then nodded. He helped Luna up before jumping into the trees once more. Luna pulled out her blaster and ran. It hurt, more than anything in the world. But she was a trooper, and troopers could take the pain, no matter what.

It took a while, but she finally reached the clearing. The fire was still raging, she had no chance of getting close to the ship with how hot it was. She would have to wait for it to die off. But that could take hours, Skwalker could be dead, or hurt, and wouldn’t get help in time. Luna had to figure something out.

Her worry was interrupted by a drop on her snout. She realized two things. One, she left her helmet behind like an idiot. Two, it was beginning to rain. The rain came down, and it came down hard and fast. Within seconds, it went from a few droplets to a full blown torrent. Luna watched in amazement as the fire dimmed and drowned under the intensity of the rain.

The alicorn thanked whatever deity existed for the break as she ran for what was left the Consular Ship to find a working distress beacon. Hopefully, there was a fleet nearby that could pick them up, or at the very least, some medical supplies that survived the explosion.

Anakin ignored the rain as it poured. He focused all of his energy into the fight before him. He blocked every blow sent his way by the assailant, who blocked each of his attacks in turn. Every strike filled him with rage, his thoughts were one: Kill Her. He struck and swung with all his might, but the Sith Warrior was strong and skilled.

His robes were torn, their battle burning and scraping away its cloth. He continued to fight inside the abandoned temple. He would not lose this battle.

Luna searched the scorched remains of the ship. She couldn’t find much, as the explosion seemed to have claimed everything. She stared down at what remained of the crew. Their bodies were torn to shreds and burned to ashes. The sight made her sick. What sort of monster could do such a thing? Is this who she was trained to fight?

Well, that turned out well. The alicorn looked at the stump that was once her wing and sighed. She was doing her best to ignore the pain, but the burn was intense. It felt like the entire left side of her body was on fire, and every step seemed to spark a new ember. Is this was the Commander felt when the Count cut off his arm?

Luna could respect what the Commander was going through, even if she was angry at him for making such a big mistake. Why would he chase a random fighter into an obvious trap? Why was he suddenly so reckless? Actually scratch that, he was always reckless. But it was never to this degree.

Was he trying to prove himself to General Kenobi? Did he think he could take on any challenge on his own? Probably. But he can’t do that, not if he wants to lead troops. He lost a squad today because of this. 16 brave men were cut down and slaughtered in such brutal fashion. As evident by the crushed and mangled bodies she came across on the way here.

If he was going to ever lead again, Luna would make sure he never made this kind of arrogant mistake ever again.

Anakin roared as he charged at the Sith. his lightsaber was long gone, replaced by one of her’s. He didn’t relent as she was pushed back to the edge of the cliff. He didn’t relent as she fell onto her rear. He didn’t relent as the force of his blows cracked the very ground beneath his feet. He didn’t relent as he thought about his masters. What they would say if they saw the power he was unleashing. He only thought about the troopers he lost. The mistake he made. The friend he might lose. And the wife who waited for him on Coruscant. He didn’t stop until the ground crumbled, and the assassin fell into the darkness with a scream.

He stared into the abyss as the wind blew through. He said nothing as the adrenaline now had nowhere to go, no action to enhance. There was only one thing he could do. The padawan let out a mighty roar, in both victory and anger. It echoed into the abyss, repeating itself back to him several times before dying out in the darkness.

He stared down as he deactivated the Sith’s blade and threw it into the void with her corpse. He never said a word as he turned around and started his trek back through the jungle.

As he stepped down the steps of the temple, he spotted something in the darkness. The fighter that led him here in the first place.

The battle of Muunilinst was finally over. The Banking Clan officially surrendered and the droids were shut down. Clone then began the slow and agonizing process of cleaning up the mess, assessing casualties, and loading everything back onto the ships while a small occupation force ensures nobody tries to reactivate the factories before they’re repurposed for the Republic Military.

Cadence limped over to General Kenobi after she took a check to see what remained of her company. 47 troopers were killed, and another 72 wounded, counting the officers. The attack carried out by Dirge caused most of the casualties. The captain tried to find her sister after the fight, but she quickly found out that Luna was sent on another assignment during the battle.

She sat next to General Kenobi, who gave her a small smile before observing the operation below.

“We were fortunate that this battle ended quickly.” He said.

“True, sir.” Cadence said as she adjusted herself. “But we took a lot of casualties.” The Jedi sighed. He’d hoped to avoid this, but the loss of the artillery so early in the battle made it more difficult in the street fighting. He would have to make sure the artillery had better protection from now on.

“We won’t take them lightly. We’ll learn from this.” Before cadence could respond, ARC Captain Fordo approached.

“Sir, we detected a ship exiting Hyperspace, it matches the one Commander Skywalker pursued. I have batteries standing by.” Kenobi looked up to see the fighter coming in for a landing.

“Hold your fire, Captain.” The fighter landed without trouble. A squad of troopers surrounded the fighter and aimed at the cockpit. Cadence readied her weapon, just incase. The hatch opened up to reveal two figures inside.

“Commander Skywalker?!” The padawan jumped from the fighter, a wounded alicorn cradled in his arms.

“Get her to the medics, now!” He ordered two troopers, who immediately took the captain from his arms. Cadence got up from her spot and ran over to her sister, despite the pain her wounds gave her for doing so. The clones gently placed Luna on a stretcher, and lifted her up.

Cadence slowed down and began to limp next to her sister. “Luna, are you okay?” As she asked the question, she saw the stump where her wing once was. Luna struggled to open her eyes, the fatigue from the day’s events were beginning to take hold.

“I’m… fine, Cadence. Just a scratch.”

“A scratch?” Cadence growled. “You lost your wing!”

Luna gave a cheeky grin, but the pain was still evident. “R-really? Hadn’t… hadn’t noticed.” The troopers carried the alicorn to a gunship full of wounded. The troopers on board did their best not to stare. The medic on board immediately treated her as she was placed on the floor of the gunship.

He noticed the pink alicorn watching her sister with worry. He gave an assuring smile, not that she could see it under his helmet.

“She’ll be alright ma’am. I’ll take good care of her.” Cadence stared at the medic, then back at Luna.

“I’ll see you later, sis.” Luna smiled.

“Indeed.” With that, the doors to the gunship closed before it took off and flew away to the nearest Venator. Cadence watched it go before turning back to the two Jedi, who were watching a holo-comm from another Jedi. She sighed before going back to her men, who were assisting their own wounded being put on the transports.

On the Fourth Moon of Yavin, Ventress struggled to climb up. She used her hatred and her anger at Skywalker as fuel for her strength, as true Sith do. She climbed from the darkness, thinking about that padawan and his trooper ally. Ventress felt humiliated. How could she, a Sith Warrior, be bested by a student and a lowly clone? She would become better, even if it killed her. She would prove herself to Dooku, and become his apprentice.

She would become true Sith, and she would have her revenge.
