Chapters To The Heart Through the Stomach
It is the last day of school for the students of Ponyville Elementary School. In the school’s early days it housed just around ten students and a certain earth pony Miss Cheerilee was its sole teacher. In about twenty years, Ponyville Elementary had expanded and now housed about 1,500 students. The teaching staff was much larger and Miss Cheerilee served as the school’s principal. The town of Ponyville had also expanded in terms of its population and technical advances. Ponyville’s citizens now included Griffons, Hippogriffs, a few yaks and dragons. Still the citizens of Ponyville were friendly and almost everycreature acted as family. What had not changed were the dangers of the Everfree Forest and The Castle of Friendship that towered over the slowly modernized town. It was just five more minutes for the school bell to single the end of the school day and the beginning of the long summer break. Finally the bell rings and Ponyville Elementary’s students burst through the school’s doors and out onto the streets. Among the young students was a little Pegasus filly with a white coat and a mane made up of dark purple and pink named Echo. She was the daughter of Scootaloo and Rumble, the former having quite the reputation of forming a little kiddie group called The Cutiemark Crusaders. Echo was in the same position that her mother was at her age: Echo was a blank flank. However, Echo was a good flier by age six and by the time she was ten she was performing her own tricks. She had quite the athletic build for a filly her age which enabled her to compete in a lot sports at school. Yet, she had an Achilles heel: she was rather shy, maybe as shy as Ponyville’s top animal caretaker Fluttershy. Despite this, Echo still managed to have a close group of friends: video game enthusiast Pixel Bit and the youngest resident of Sweet Apple Acres Api Apple.
As Echo started to make her way home a young earth pony colt ran past her eventually meeting up with five other colts. Echo was familiar with this particular colt. She always noticed this colt in the hallways of Ponyville Elementary. His name was Quickstep. His coat was tan and his mane was a mop of blonde locks. Quickstep was one of the popular colts in school, a gifted track athlete and a straight “A” student. Despite his talents, Quickstep was always humble and ready to help those in need. It was quite unfortunate that he never noticed that a particular filly took a liking to him. “What I wouldn’t give to have a colt like that with me,” Echo would think to herself. They both had so much in common: they were both into sports and both did not have their cutiemarks. However, Echo could not bring herself to break the ice. Echo let out a sad sigh, and continued on her way home.

Sweet Apple Acres was one of the few places that were virtually untouched by Ponyville’s embrace of modernity. What has changed was that the apple farm managed to expand to four more lots. One lot was reserved for growing cherries. It was the sole provider of Ponyville’s apples and gave an air of primitiveness. It was the ideal place for the daughter of The Princess of Friendship to have her physical training. Princess Starburst did not possess the prissy attitude of most royals in Equestria. She was more serious minded, quite moody and did not share her mother’s love to seek all knowledge. She had one goal in mind and that was to be the first female captain of Equestria’s Royal Guard. Her only hindrance was that she was smaller than most mares and she was the daughter of Princess Twilight Sparkle. Despite all this she took pride in the fact that for a tiny Pegasus she had the largest wings in Equestria. She was particularly honored to have beaten her older cousin Princess Flurry Heart for that record. Starburst got her training down by helping buck apples out of the trees, doing laps around the farm and helping carry the hay for the farm animals. The problem was she would overwork herself to the point of passing out. When this happened it sent those around her into a panic but then Starburst would come to in about an hour or so. In spite of this she never slowed down but the cycle of passing out would continue. One time she broke her wing as a result of passing out in mid-air while flying and falling to the ground. She would overlook such incidents telling herself that all the pain was worth it for it was a step closer to securing her place in The Royal Gaurd. That morning her workout routine was flying around Sweet Apple Acre’s skyline. She glided in the air, did somersaults and made fancy shapes with the clouds. It was a mesmerizing sight for a certain filly who watched Starburst from the nearby house.
Api Apple would sit on the porch of her house and watch Starburst do her workouts. It was her next favorite thing apart from trying to find her special talent since she was a blank flank. The white, brown spotted, red haired earth filly really looked up to Starburst because the princess always reminded Api to never allow naysayers to judge her based on her looks. Whenever the kids at school would tease Api for her small size all she had to do was think about Starburst and what she was capable of despite being shortest of her friends. Api stayed home from school that day determining that it was pointless to be present at school since it was the last day of school. She was particularly no fan of school or schoolwork. Her oldest cousin Red June, Sweet Apple Acre’s sole cherry harvester and the daughter of Principal Cheerilee and Big Macintosh the co-owner of Sweet Apple Acres, would always try to emphasize the importance of school and try to help her buckle down and do her homework. Despite Red June’s efforts Api’s grades did not seem to be getting any better. On that day Api’s mom Applebloom was away helping Api’s Auntie Applejack and Uncle Big Mac sell their famous apple pies while her dad Pipsqueak was traveling on the road helping a certain doctor promote a new invention. She was not home alone, however. With her was Pixel Bit, the daughter of famous singer Sweetie Belle and game designer Button Mash. Also present was her second older cousin Gold Delicious, called Del by friends and family and was the son of Applejack and Caramel. Like all earth ponies born of the Apple Family, it was always Del’s destiny to live and work on Sweet Apple Acres. However, Del never allowed himself to be confined to life on the farm. He excelled in cooking and always presented his dishes in the most beautiful of displays. His culinary skills caught the attention of one of Canterlot’s elite, Fancy Pants when Del was asked to cater at Fancy’s birthday by the daughter of Pixel’s cousin Crystal Clarity, called Claire by her friends. Ever since catering at Fancy Pants’ birthday Del was always sought after to cater to other major events in Canterlot. Del always stayed true to his roots, however, never forgetting that he was an Apple born and bred in Ponyville.
That day Api was seated on the porch watching Starburst do her flying. Seated next to her was Pixel playing her Joy Boy 7. “Do you really think Del’s going over to Canterlot to help with some big get-together, Api?” asked the unicorn filly holding her Joy Boy with her magic.
“No way,” said Api. “That’s like the second time he’s going over there in three weeks.”
“So what do you think is really going on?”
“He’s totally hitting on those two mares.”
“Two mares? I thought it was just one.”
“Oh yeah. Crème de la Crème is one who Del say is one of his besties, but I saw how he was looking at that nurse.”
Pixel sat up straight and looked straight at Api with wide eyes. “A nurse?” said Pixel. “What’s her name?”
“Amber Lily, I think,” said Api. “She came to the farm with Annie when Annie was invited to the Apple Family reunion by Star. I really think Del’s got the hots for Amber.”
“I know Amber,” said Pixel. “She came over to my house to see Annie when Annie and T were babysitting me. She’s half crystal pony and half earth pony. You don’t really notice how sparkly Amber gets unless she’s really, really happy.”
“Humph! I don’t think she’s good enough for Del,” said Api with a scowl.
“Why not?” said Pixel. “She seems like a nice mare and she’s really pretty. Plus, it’s a good match since Amber’s half earth pony.”
“Star said all Amber does is party and she’s always a flirt. Del doesn’t need a gal who likes to play kissy face with everycreature she sees. Crème on the otherhoof is always helpful, humble and smart, plus she’s rich.”
“But Amber’s got money too,” said Pixel.
“Star told me that a nurse doesn’t make a lot of money like a super model,” said Api. “And Crème just happens to be a famous super model.”
“Is that why you’re always setting Del up with Crème so she can give you guys money to fix up the farm?”
“No. A stallion with smarts and charm like my cousin need a mare who can help him through a tough high society world. A crazy, mixed up party mare can’t do that.”
“Well good luck with that,” said Pixel turning her focus back on her Joy Boy. “Just so you know, you’re not exactly a good matchmaker.”
“Hey, who got Prism and Whirlwind to start talking again?” said Api.
“That doesn’t count, Api,” responded the unicorn filly. “They’re still broken up.”
Api refocused on Starburst who was right in the middle of landing on the Apple Acres’ surface. Her face was drenched with sweat. She took out the pink ribbon from her mane and did a hair flip which projected an epic scene putting Api in absolute awe. The princess started to make her way to the house when suddenly after three steps she fell forward landing flat on her face. She laid motionless on the ground as the breeze kicked up dust which swirled around her. Api and Pixel meanwhile looked on with blank expressions. Api sighed. “Del!” Api called out. “Star passed out again!”

Starburst laid on the family couch in the living room. Api looked on as Starburst breathed soft, gentle breaths. Pixel sat on a nearby chair engrossed in her Joy Boy. Gold Delicious meanwhile was busy in the kitchen. Api left Starburst’s side to join the large, orange coated, brown haired stallion. As Api set hoof in the kitchen a sweet aroma touched her nostrils. She closed her eyes and for a short moment she was in a state of ecstasy. She opened her eyes and saw Del pulling out a tray from the hot oven and placing it on a nearby counter. Api galloped towards the counter, hoped on a chair and gawked at the tray that contained squared shaped delicacies. “This looks even more delicious than the last stuff you made, cuz,” said Api. “What are they?”
“Cheddar Quiche Squares,” Del replied.
“Quiche?” said Api facing her cousin with a confused look.
“It’s Prench for tart,” said Del. “Crème made a request fer 36 squares fer her annual gala this Sunday. Ah made another batch fer you an’ Pixel to try some.” Del pointed to a container on the other counter which had six quiche squares in it. Api’s face beamed and she ran over to the counter jumping on top of a stool to get to the top. She picked up one quiche and shoved it into her mouth. The moment the pastry touched her taste buds her eyes opened and deep moan came out of her. “It tastes even better than it looks, Del,” said Api with a full mouth. She then licked her hoof. “I’m sure a lot of folks here in Ponyville would love to have some of this,” Api said.
“Yeah, Ah’m sure they would,” said Del.
“Just imagine how much money you can make.”
“Ah don’t do it fer the money, Api. Ah do it ‘cause ah love it.”
“Claire told me that if you’re doing something you love you should get paid for it.”
“Mama told me that there’s more to life than money,” said Del. “As long as you’re doin’ somethin’ to make Ponyville an’ Equestria happy, that’s the greatest reward you can ever ask fer.”
Api let out a sigh. She was particularly frustrated at her cousin’s refusal to look at the bigger picture. The profits that the Apple Family made from their apple sales were enough to just cover equipment maintenance and house repairs, but in Api’s opinion they were basically living like paupers. Api would look at her closest friends and she would see Pixel Bit with her expensive stereo systems and her 85 inch 4KQLED Smart TV playing the latest video games thanks to the combined salaries of her parents. Api would look at Echo and she would see Echo riding on her expensive bicycles and go on expensive trips with her parents. Though she loved her friends dearly, Api felt so out of place considering that Pixel and Echo were living lives that she could only dream of. Api then got out of her train of thought when she noticed Del in the process of mixing flour. A smirk comes across her face when she came up with an idea. She went to a nearby drawer and found a notepad and small pencil. “So Del, how exactly do make your Cheddar Quiche Squares?” said the earth filly talking through her teeth as she held her pencil in her mouth and her notepad in one hoof.
“Oh, a lotta stuff,” said Del not facing his little cousin. “Ah don’t wanna bore ya to death.”
“I won’t be bored. I promise.”
“Well, first, you need four cups o’ flour, a quarter teaspoon o’ salt, a quarter teaspoon o’ grounded ginger, a quarter teaspoon o’ black pepper, two cups o’ milk, a cup o’ shredded cheddar cheese an’ a half cup o’ grounded garlic.” Api stopped writing the ingredients and looked at her notepad. The page was littered with numbers and measurements. Making a quiche involved more measuring than she had anticipated plus she and numbers were already sworn enemies. “How could you be so sure that you’re putting in the exact amount, Del?” asked Api. “Do you like, hope that the flour you put in is four cups?”
“Nope,” said the orange stallion. He then grabbed a measuring cup, some measuring spoons and faced Api. The earth filly in turn quickly hid her notepad and her pencil under her plot. “This here is a measuring cup an’ these are measuring spoons,” Del said. He then walked to a container of flour. “All you gotta do is dip the measuring cup in an’ scoop one, two, three four cups o’ flour an’ put in the bowl,” said Del demonstrating by transferring four cups of flour from the plastic container to the bowl on the counter. He then took out a full pepper shaker containing black pepper, removed the lid and took one measuring spoon between his teeth. “You do the same with the black pepper” said Del as he transferred about a quarter teaspoon of black pepper from the pepper shaker to the bowl containing flour.
“Ohhh,” said Api. Del got back to making another batch of quiches turning his back to his little cousin. The moment the large earth stallion showed his back Api pulled out her notepad and pencil from under her. “After you do all that what else?” said the tiny filly as she held the pencil between her teeth.
“You start up the oven at 350 degrees like this,” said Gold Delicious demonstrating by turning the knob to the oven. “You can tell by looking at the meter right here an’ turn it to 350 degress. While the oven heats up mix up the ingredients in the bowl ‘til they turn to a large filling then put the filling into a flat pan. In the pan is a premade crust Ah made earlier. The crust the most important thing.”
“Why?”
“A lotta ponies told me that the best thing ‘bout the quiche is the crust. They jus’ love that buttery, flakey taste. It’s somethin’ that you gotta make separate though.”
“How do you make that?”
“You take ‘bout three an’ a half cups o’ flour, a quarter teaspoon o’ salt, a half cup o’ butter an’ a cup o’ water. You mix ‘em all up in the bowl ‘til the dough forms an’ roll it all up in a ball. Then wrap it up in plastic an’ put it in the fridge fer ‘bout four hours. When four hours are up take it outta the fridge, put it into the flat pan an’ keep pressin’ it with yer hooves ‘til the crust takes the shape o’ the pan. That’s when you put yer quiche fillin’. After that slip it into the oven an’ leave it fer ‘bout forty-five minutes. You can make sure that you don’t overcook it with this here timer.” Gold Delicious picked up an oven timer nearby and faced Api. Before he completely turned to Api she quickly hid her notepad and pencil under a kitchen cloth next to her. She displayed a broad smile in an effort to act normal. “You simply turn this knob to any number,” said Del approaching Api with the oven timer. “Every number represent minutes like when we want somethin’ to bake fer ten minutes we simply turn it to the number 10.” He turned the timer to ten. “When ten minutes are up it makes this noise,” Del said turning the timer to 0 which let out a loud DIG!
“Cool!” said Api in awe.
“After yer quiche is done, you cut it up in twelve squares with this here pizza cutter,” said Del. He demonstrated by taking a pizza cutter and running it horizontally and vertically across one of his freshly made quiches until they were twelve even squares. “An’ that’s how ya make Cheddar Quiche Squares,” said Del with a smile.
“Awesome!” said Api beaming.
“Jus’ remember, after the quiche cools down you gotta put ‘em in the fridge or they won’t be good no more. When yer ready to serve you gotta heat them up in the microwave,” Del added.
“Right,” said Api. Del then turned back to the counter while Api uncovered her notepad and wrote in the last instructions. She reviewed what she had written and got a good sense of accomplishment. Though she was young, Api had a talent of observation that was way beyond her years. While she mentally patted herself on the back there was a sudden knock on the door. She turned her focus to the door and noticed Pixel running towards the door. Pixel turned the door knob with her magic and opened the door wide open. Standing before her was none other than Echo. “You’re here!” Pixel said with a broad smile. She then hugged Echo.
“You made it, girl!” said a beaming Api as she ran towards the Pegasus filly and hugged her.
“You all know what time is it, right?” said Echo with a smirk.
“Summer Break!” the fillies said in unison.
“That’s right,” said Api brimming with excitement. “Three months of nonstop fun, especially when it comes to earning our cutiemarks.”
“You know it!” said Pixel.
“To the clubhouse!” declared Echo. With that the fillies rushed out of the door towards the other end of Sweet Apple Acres.
***
It was the first night of Summer Break and on this night Api, Echo and Pixel were sleeping out in the old Cutiemark Crusaders Clubhouse. Aplebloom renovated the treehouse when she noticed that her daughter showed the same keenness and enthusiasm she had when it came to getting her cutiemark. Api wasn’t exactly as desperate as Applebloom was in finding her cutiemark but Api was inspired to form her own brand of the Cutiemark Crusaders after hearing of the exploits of her mother and Pixel and Echo’s mothers. Also it was the perfect excuse to satisfy Api’s hunger for nonstop adventure which often got her into trouble. The newest batch of Cutiemark Crusaders spent the afternoon experimenting on whether or not their special talent was spingboard diving like athletes do in the Equestira Games. When night finally fell, it was evident that they were not world-class divers worthy of the Equestria Games by their lack of cutiemarks. After telling each other scary stories they huddled themselves into their sleeping bags to prepare for the next day of “Intense adventure” according to Api. Pixel was already fast asleep. However, Echo tossed and turned in her sleeping bag. She sat up and blew her short purple hair from her eyes. She had too much on her mind which made sleep impossible. She could not even focus on the upcoming Summer Break. She needed somepony to confine in and that was a certain brown spotted white earth filly. She turned to her right expecting to find Api in her sleeping bag. To Echo’s surprise, Api was missing. Echo looked all around the clubhouse and saw the walls plastered with plans for cuitemark crusading, a radio in one corner and Pixel in her sleeping bag. No sign of Api whatsoever. “Api?” Echo called out. She got out of her sleeping bag and made her way to the door of the clubhouse being careful not to awake the white unicorn filly asleep on the floor. Echo looked out over Sweet Apple Acres. The apple farm was blanketed by darkness only being illuminated by Princess Luna’s moon and stars. Still there was no sign of the youngest member of the Apple Family. Echo figured the only place Api would be was in the main house. Echo climbed down the ramp that served as a stairway to the clubhouse and ran all the way across the apple fields towards the wooden structure. She approached the front door and twisted the doorknob. The door slowly swung open revealing the family living room. Echo walked in the room and looked up to find the kitchen light on. In the kitchen there was Api Apple standing on a stool next to a counter. Api’s coat was stained with flour and she appeared to busy at fixing a midnight snack. So busy was Api in her work that she didn’t noticed a white Pegasus filly standing directly behind her. “Api?” said Echo. The sudden sound of Echo’s soft spoken voice jolted Api and she almost fell off her stool. Echo rushed towards Api and held the stool still. Api looked down finding Echo holding onto the stool. “Echo?” said Api with a look of shock on her face. Her face then contorted to anger. “What the heck?” Api said in a hushed tone.
“Sorry,” said Echo with sheepishness plastered on her face. “Watcha doin’?”
“Del was making some quiche squares for those Canterlot ponies,” Api replied. “So I thought Ponyville has a right to enjoy them too.”
“You’re making those tasty quiche squares?” asked Echo. “Do you even know how to make them?”
“I just made some over there. Try one.”
Echo turned to the other counter and found a bowl of freshly made quiche squares. She trotted over to the counter, picked up one of the squares and took a tiny bite. Her eyes widened with delight and within seconds she gobbled down the entire quiche. “Wow, Api, this is just as good as the ones Del made,” said Echo with her mouth full.
“Baking runs in the family,” said Api with her chest puffed out with pride. “Is it such a surprise?”
“Well, too bad the same thing can’t be said about Cotton Candy’s baking.”
“So true. Just imagine how much folks will be willing to pay for some of these babies.”
Echo looked at Api with a cocked eyebrow. “You’re gonna sell them?”
“A lot of fillies and colts sell lemonade for Summer Break. I thought well, wait till Ponyville gets a load of the Apple Family’s great baking skills,” said Api. “Tomorrow, this will be selling out in the middle of Ponyville Square and everycreature would love it just as much as we do.”
“Cool. What did Del say?”
“Oh…” Api seemed stumped for words. “I kinda didn’t tell him about this,” she finally said.
“Why not?” asked Echo.
“Del is just like Auntie Applejack,” said Api. “He doesn’t think about the future. Baking shouldn’t be a hobby. Look at Rarity. She wouldn’t be able to open a Carousel Boutique in ten cities across Equestria if she was making dresses as a hobby. Once Del and everyone else see how much bits I make from selling these it’ll make our lives even better than it is now.” Api got started mixing up ingredients in a large silver bowl as Echo looked on. Api then looked back at Echo with suspicious eyes. “You didn’t come to stop me, did you?” she said.
“Oh no, no, no,” said Echo shaking her head. “I just got a lot on my mind. I couldn’t sleep so I thought I’d talk to you about it. But I see you’re busy.”
Api straightened up. Echo’s problem should have been one that could have been relayed to her parents or even her older cousin Whirlwind. Api knew Echo would not have come to her unless it was a situation she knew she could help fix. Api turned around and faced the Pegasus filly. “You’ve got a crush, don’t you?” she asked with a smirk.
Echo’s cheeks flushed with red. Api knew her all too well. “Well,” Echo began. “He’s in the 5th Grade; he’s on the school’s racing team, he’s got straight “A’s and…”
“It’s Quickstep!” said Api cutting off Echo.
“How did you know?” said Echo with shock.
“You have no idea how good I am in noticing things,” said Api as she jumped off her stool and trotted towards Echo. “I see the way you look at him the halls. Even in P.E. you can’t take your eyes off that kid. I gotta say you’ve got good taste.”
“Yeah,” said Echo barely containing her blushing. “I was really hoping that he’d noticed me, but I don’t think I have a chance.”
“Hey! Don’t ever say that. If our moms didn’t think they had a chance in getting their cutiemarks they would’ve never gotten them especially on the same day.”
“. Everypony has to get their cutiemark someday, but not everypony gets to be with their special somepony. I’d really wanna to talk to him but I don’t think we have anything in common.”
“What do you mean? You’re both sports freaks.”
“Look at the kind of kids he hangs around. They’re the popular type. It’s not like I’m ashamed of you and Pixel, but Quickstep might look at me and think he’s too good for me or if it does work out he’ll think that you guys might cramp his style.”
Api nodded her head. “I think I understand,” she said. “But seriously, if there’s anypony who looks good together, it’s you two.”
“What if doesn’t work out?” said Echo.
“Our moms tried everything to get their cutiemarks. Yes, it’s a different thing, but the point is they didn’t give up. You on the other hoof should stop being so negative and go after Quickstep until he notices you.”
“But what if he doesn’t think you and Pixel aren’t cool enough?”
“Pixel’s mom is one of the greatest singers in Equestria and my Auntie Applejack is on Princess Twilight’s Council of Friendship. What colt wouldn’t want a filly that has so many famous connections?”
Echo thought long and hard on what the earth filly said to her. There were a lot of cute colts in school but not many of them were colts Echo felt she could personally identify with. She decided to take a chance at love. She watched on as Api climbed back on her stool and got back to baking “You know what?” Echo said. “Before Summer Break’s over I’m gonna trot up to Quickstep and tell him exactly how a feel.”
“That’s the spirit!” said Api beaming. Suddenly there was a loud DIG! “Oh, Echo, while you’re here can you take those out of the oven for me?” said Api.
Echo grabbed a baker’s hook that the Apple Family often used take baked goods out of the oven. She opened the oven’s lid, placed the hook into the little hole at the edge of the silver tray and pulled it out. The tray was laden with quiche squares. Echo then laid the tray on the counter where she noticed about four more trays with freshly baked quiches. “How many of these are you baking anyway, Api?” said Echo.
“Just enough for everycreature who’s everycreature in Ponyville to have taste first thing tomorrow,” said Api. “and you and Pixel are gonna help sell them.”
Author's Note
In her headcanon for her characters Kilala97 said that Api's father Pipsqueak is always absent doing some business. I've always imagined that the reason being was because Pipsqueak became an assistant for Dr. Whooves. I like to imagine in the Kilalaverse there is another reincarnation of Dr. Whooves. I can't tell what number The Doctor is this time, but I envision him as being a pale grey earth pony with a pale blue mane and the same hourglass cutiemark.
To The Heart Through the Stomach
Oh, how she hated Ponyville. To Nidra this “backwater hick town” was everything Canterlot was not. Most of Canterlot’s citizens were dressed in high elegance while Ponyville’s citizens trotted in nothing but their fur and in some cases their scales and feathers. Most areas in Canterlot were cleaned spotless and their parks properly trimmed while Ponyville seemed to have dirt and mud on every corner. Despite these differences Nidra came to Ponyville once a week to escape the responsibilities of being a princess. Though she enjoyed being princess, she tried to avoid the responsibilities that came with that role any which way she could. In the view of Equestria’s first bat pony alicorn, responsibility was for “lowly subjects and peasants.” Nidra loved her mother Princess Luna and father Supernova dearly, but getting the sixteen-year-old mare to understand that being a princess was more than just lavish parties and being served by hundreds of butlers and maids was an uphill battle for both her parents, her mother especially. Sometimes Nidra would abuse her title to get what she wanted and even though her alicorn magic wasn’t as strong as her mother’s or her Auntie Celestia’s, Nidra would often use her ability to put ponies to sleep for the wrong reasons. One incident involved her causing a deep sleep to fall upon the son of an Equestrian noble during the middle of a state dinner as revenge for rebuffing her romantic advances. For added measure Nidra caused him to have devastating nightmares for an entire month. Such an action caused Nidra to be grounded for a month herself.
Whenever Nidra visited Ponyville she would disguise herself as a Pegasus mare named Jet Stream. She would go to her cousin Prince Illusion for help with donning such a disguise due to the fact that Illusion possessed the same chaotic powers his father Discord had. Illusion himself had a special disguise whenever he was out in public. An earth pony named Coal. Early that day Nidra in her Jet Stream disguise was on her way to Ponyville by train. Accompanying her was Illusion in his Coal disguise and Prince Valiant Heart. Valiant, called Lance by his friends was the son of Princess Cadence and Shining Armor and the younger brother of Princess Flurry Heart. He was also Equestria’s first male alicorn. Unlike Nidra, Valiant never backed away from the responsibilities that came with being part of the royal family of The Chrystal Empire. As a member of Equestria’s Royal Guard, he along with his father and Uncle Flash Sentry served as the inspiration for his cousin Starburst wanting to be in the Royal Guard. Valiant also did not share the negative views that Nidra had of the citizens of Ponyville. This was evident in his romance with Sweet Apple Acres’ sole cherry harvester Red June. Like Nidra and Illusion Valiant also had a disguise for public appearances: a unicorn named Awestruck. That was the disguise that Valiant had with help from Illusion on the train to Ponyville. After about an hour the three young royals in their disguises finally arrived at the Ponyville Train Station. “Are you sure you wanna come down here today, Nidra?” asked Illusion as they all got off the train.
“The citizens in this town are filthy and lousy,” said Nidra. “But I had to find some way to avoid that boring tea party mother was having with the Duchess of Maretonia.”
“You don’t seem to have a problem with Turquoise though,” said Valiant.
It was true. The one good thing Nidra could take away from Ponyville was the younger son of Rarity and Spike the dragon. At age sixteen Turquoise Blitz was taller than most adult stallions and was quite the gentlecolt. He and Nidra had a lot of in common. For one thing they were both of mixed species. Turquoise inheriting most of his father’s dragon genes while Nidra inherited her father Supernova’s bat wings and bat-like abilities. Both Nidra and Turquoise were quite lonely. Turquoise was insecure of having more dragon features than pony features so he isolated himself from most ponies. Nidra’s bratty personality pushed away most ponies and she never had real friends. The few friends that she did have in Canterlot only associated with her because she was royalty, not because they necessarily liked her. Also because of her attitude she was never invited to parties. Nidra had her eyes for a lot of handsome royals but it was Turquoise that seemingly stole her heart. “T is different,” Nidra said after a slight pause. “For one thing his mother is the top fashion designer in all of Equestria and he knows how to treat a lady.”
“Give it up, Nidra,” said Illusion. “Turquoise already has a girlfriend.” Oh, yes. That was the one obstacle between Nidra and Turquoise. Anthea was the adopted daughter of Fluttershy and was in a romantic relationship with Turquoise for nearly two years. Anthea was the exact opposite of Nidra. Anthea was kind, humble, patient and friendly to everycreature. Kindness was something the unicorn mare seemed to have picked up in high supply from her adopted mother. The areas where Anthea seemed to differ from Fluttershy was assertiveness, bravery and the ability to speak her mind. She was also very skilled in magic which caught the attention of Princess Twilight. Twilight took Anthea under her wing, figuratively and literally, helping Anthea to enhance her magical abilities. Not only did Nidra resent the fact that Turquoise prized Anthea above every mare but Nidra was also resentful that Anthea seemed to be perfect in almost everything she did. “I’m well aware that Anthea is the only mare for T,” said Nidra. “But who’s to say that they’re not only dating because Turquoise feels sorry for her?”
“If that’s the case then you could also say that Annie’s only dating Turquoise because she feels sorry for him,” said Valiant. “Their relationship involves more than just Annie’s blindness and Turquoise having more dragon features than pony features, Nidra. There’s a mutual respect for each other and Annie never judged him for who he is.”
“I never judged him either.”
“That’s because your dad’s a batpony, so of course you and T could relate to the whole mixed genes thing,” said Illusion. “But Annie’s the first filly outside of T’s family who really accepted him for who he was.”
“I don’t get it,” said Nidra, her tone slowly saturating with anger. “A unicorn filly puts a manticore to sleep and she thinks she’s entitled to all the best in Equestria?”
“Says the filly who threw a big tantrum because a maid gave her cocoa that was too hot,” said Illusion snidely.
“Shut up!” snapped Nidra.

Api, Echo and Pixel trotted through the streets of Ponyville making their way towards Sugarcube Corner. Each filly had a small cart strapped to their flanks. In each cart were about twelve flat boxes of fresh quiche squares. The fillies finally arrived at one of the happiest places in Ponyville and started to offload the goods on a pre-prepared stand. “It was nice of Mr. and Mrs. Cake to lend us one of their refrigerators,” said Pixel.
“Yeah, I can’t wait for the folks of Ponyville to sink their teeth into one of these,” said Api with an excited grin. “Who knows? We might get our cutiemarks in selling quiche squares.”
“I wonder how that would look like?” said Echo.
“Pixel and I are gonna head back to Sweet Apple Acres to get the other quiche squares, Echo. Make sure you put these in the refrigerator and plug the fridge,” said Api as she and Pixel started to walk away with their carts in tow. Echo did everything she was told. She loaded every box into the unplugged refrigerator and trotted over to the plug. There was an extension plug that was connected to the inside of Sugarcube Corner giving much needed electricity to the outside. A small microwave was already plugged to the extension. The last thing that needed to be plugged was the refrigerator that was located behind Sugarcube Corner. Echo picked up the refrigerator’s plug with her mouth and walked towards the extension. She was inches away from the extension’s plug when she heard hoof steps heading towards her. She looked up and what she saw caused her jaw to slacken and the refrigerator’s plug to fall from her mouth. Walking past her was Quickstep all alone and dressed in a blue sweat top. She couldn’t believe it. From what Echo heard Quickstep actually lived thirty minutes from Ponyville Elementary. What brought him to the heart of Ponyville? One good explanation was that it was Summer Break. Either way, Echo was more caught up with the fact that her crush was now more or less in close proximity to her. It was time to take Api’s advice to the next level. Echo would never have this chance ever again.
Quickstep was at one of the vegetable stalls in the area ready to purchase a few veggies. After paying for his products he started to trot away from the stall. Immediately Echo ran as fast as her little hooves could take her running around evercreature that stood in her way. She was a few feet away from Quickstep when she yelled out “Quickstep! Quickstep!” Suddenly Echo stopped running and froze mentally scolding herself. In her mind she had shouted too loud and attracted unwanted attention from the nearby citizens. She looked to her left and to her right. The patrons seemed to be going about their daily business like normal and not one looked into her direction. When she turned her attention to Quickstep, he was different. He was looking at her direction. His bright, blue eyes seemed to pierce her heart and rendered her speechless, literally. Echo tried to lift her tongue to speak but she felt her tongue heavy. She took slow steps towards the earth pony colt. She now stood inches away from Quickstep. “Hi,” she finally said in a soft spoken voice.
“Hi,” Quickstep responded. There was then another moment of silence. The beauty Echo saw in Quickstep’s face seemed to be unbearable and uncontainable. She turned away blushing. “Sweet Princesses!” Echo thought. “He’s even cuter up close.” There was another pressing matter. She had to say something else to keep the conversation going or else Quickstep might walk away thinking she was a weirdo. She felt her tongue heavy once again. She tried to fight the heaviness of her tongue but it was a losing battle. “Hey,” she heard Quickstep said trotting right up to her. She then turned back to face him and found herself staring right into his hypnotic eyes. “You’re Echo, right?” said Quickstep.
“Uh, yeah,” said Echo surprised that he actually said her name. “How did you know?”
“Your cousin Whirlwind’s a Wonderbolt,” said Quickstep. “She’s hot.”
“But of course,” Echo thought silently to herself. “He only knows me because of my cousin. He’s just an earth pony version of Icy.”
“And I heard about your group The Cutiemark Crusaders,” said Quickstep. Quickstep’s second response gave Echo a sense of reassurance that her cousin Whirlwind would not be her only claim to fame. “Yeah,” Echo said. “Me and my friends just love trying to find out what our special talents would be. That’s what our moms used to do.”
“That’s pretty cool,” said Quickstep. “I’ve been trying so hard to get my cutiemark. I always thought I’d get my cutiemark in some kind of sport.”
“You’re really into sports, huh?”
“It runs in the family. My mom’s a personal trainer and my dad’s a mixed martial arts fighter. Their cutiemarks show that. I should’ve gotten mines by now.”
“…Don’t give up,” Echo said with a slight pause. “My mom thought that she would never get hers and it’s a pretty cool looking cutiemark. I’m sure yours would be just as cool.”
“Thanks,” Quickstep said with a smile. Echo suddenly became enamored by his smile which to her was more enticing than his eyes. As a result Echo let out a chuckle barely containing her blush. “So,” Echo began after composing herself “what brings you to Ponyville?”
“Just buying some stuff for my mom for dinner,” said Quickstep. “Healthy eating is really important to her and that’s why I’m buying mostly vegetables.”
“Well, why are you shopping by yourself. Don’t you have any grownups with you?”
“I live a few blocks down so my parents don’t have a problem with me running errands on my own.”
“Oh, you live a few blocks down? That explains everything.”
“You know, between you, Pixel Bit and Api, I didn’t take you for a talker.” Echo seemed taken aback over the fact that Quickstep was now talking about her specifically. “I always wanted to talk to you, but some of my friends thought you might be stuck up and I guess I kinda believed it,” said Quickstep. The revelation that her crush was actively seeking her seemed to hit Echo like a tidal wave. Internally, Echo was squealing as if there was no tomorrow. “You wanted to talk to me?” Echo said, her voice slightly trembling.
“Yeah, I think you’re pretty,” said Quickstep.
Echo felt her legs become weak. If she had a mirror it would reveal a big, bright blush all over her face. “Wow!” she thought out loud turning away her face with a smile. “You sure know how to embarrass a girl.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to,” said Quickstep approaching closer.
“No, it’s okay,” said Echo facing the colt once again. “Because I thought you were cute.”
“Whoa, now you’re embarrassing me,” said Quickstep with a slight blush.
“A lot of fillies think you’re cute.”
“Well if that’s true, no filly ever said that to my face,” said Quickstep. There was then a moment of silence between colt and filly as they were now looking away at each other. “Anyway,” said Quickstep breaking the silence and facing Echo “if you’re not too busy, I know this place by the lake. Maybe we could both go down there and we could get to know each other better.”
Echo’s eyes widened. She tried to process what had just entered her ears. The colt of her dreams was more or less asking her on a date. Her mind then went through a rationalization. “It’s not a date,” she thought. “You two barely even know each other.” She knew that she may never have the opportunity to be in close proximity with Quickstep again. However, she remembered that she was tasked by Api to help with freshly baked goods. “I’d love to,” said Echo to Quickstep. She then let out a sad sigh. “But I’m helping my friends sell some stuff. So, I’m not sure if I’ll have the time.”
“Oh,” said Quickstep with a look of disappointment.
“Yeah, maybe me and my friends will get our cutiemarks in selling,” said Echo.
“Well, good luck with that. It was nice meeting you, Echo.”
“Yeah…, you too, Quickstep.”
Echo watched as Quickstep walked away with his saddled bags in tow, disappearing into the crowd of adults. Mentally, she scolded herself for deliberately rejecting Quickstep’s offer to go at the lake. That lake was more or less in a remote area. It was perfect for someone who wanted to spend a quiet evening with their special someone. “Way to go, Echo,” she thought to herself. “You totally blew it.” She started to make her way back to her friends’ stand when she suddenly stopped. She had the feeling that was forgetting something. She then shook off the feeling turning her focus back to the stall.

Cotton Candy and Anthea made their way towards Carousel Boutique, each filly brimming with excitement. It was the first day of Summer Break and the daughter of Pinky Pie was determined to start the long summer with a bang. Cotton Candy wanted to have a huge party with all of her schoolmates along with her close knit group of friends. Starburst, Prism Bolt and Anthea were already on board. Gold Delicious was unavailable due to his catering duties at Crème de la Crème’s gala. The only ones who may have an opening in their schedule were Claire and Turquoise, the half pony, half dragon children of Rarity and Spike. “We’re here, Annie,” said the earth pony filly. Though Mrs. Rarity now had several different boutiques opened in several major cities across Equestria, Carousel Boutique was the branch that was her one and only home. Over the years it had been renovated into a larger structure to accommodate its two largest residents: Rarity’s husband and her son. “Don’t you think she’d rather focus on work instead partying, Candy?” asked Anthea.
“You know the old saying, Annie,” said Cotton Candy. “‘All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.’”
“Her name isn’t Jack, Candy,” said the young unicorn mare. “It’s Claire.”
Cotton Candy knocked on the door and waited. Anthea, being blind, waited to hear a response at the door. After few moments the door opened revealing the freckled face of Claire Rarity, called Claire by her friends. While Claire had significant dragon traits like her brother, she also possessed two horns. It was a pony trait she inherited from her unicorn mother. Claire’s two horns enabled her to levitate objects, generate light to see in the dark and breathe fire. Her magic was not so strong but it did enable her to generate fire to mold beautiful jewelry. Rarity took notice of this and when Claire turned 21 Rarity added an extension to the Ponyville branch of Carousel Boutique to help Claire sell her one of a kind jewelry. Eventually Claire opened up her own jewelry store called Hearthfire Jewelry. Claire’s fire breathing abilities also enabled her to get back at Prism Bolt whenever he pranked her. One time the son of Wonderbolts Rainbow Dash and Soarin’ Skies pulled a distasteful prank on Claire and she got back at him by burning a off a good chunk of his mane and tail. It was such incidents coupled with her long work schedules which made Cotton Candy obligated to help Claire take a load off. “Oh, hi Cotton Candy, Annie,” said Claire. “What can I do for you today?”
“Come on, Claire. You know what time it is,” said Cotton Candy. “It’s Summer Break!”
“Cotton Candy, I’m twenty-two years old,” said Claire with a look of sorrow. “You know I don’t go on Summer Break. I mean my vacation isn’t until three months from now.”
“Come on, Claire,” said Annie. “We really wanted you at our Summer Break party. Del’s already not available.”
“I really wish I could, girls. But I have to help mom show off a new fashion line to Photo Finish.”
Cotton Candy’s eyes widened at the mention of Photo Finish. “Photo Finish?” said Candy grabbing Claire by both shoulders. “The most famous fashion photographer in Equestria? That Photo Finish?”
“Uh…Yeah,” said Claire with a hint of surprise at the grey earth pony’s sudden outburst of excitement. “She’s inside right now seeing what mom has on display. Turquoise is helping out too.”
Suddenly Cotton Candy sped right past Claire and into Carousel Boutique. Anthea who was staying close to Candy started to hyperventilate. She often needed to feel the presence of another pony in order to move about due to her limited eye sight. If she felt no one she would lose direction and get nervous. This was evident when she no longer felt Cotton Candy’s presence. “Candy?” said Anthea with panic in her voice. “Candy? Where are you?”
“It’s okay, Annie,” said Claire reassuringly. “I’m right here.” Claire’s horns generated a magical aura which engulfed Anthea’s body and levitate her off the ground and into the Boutique. Claire set Anthea gently on the floor and closed the door behind her. “Thanks,” said Anthea with a sigh of relief. Slowly both Anthea and Claire made their way to Rarity’s workroom. “I could remember mom telling me about Photo Finish,” said Anthea. “She once hired mom to be a model but mom quit when she couldn’t deal with all the attention she was getting. What brings Photo Finish back here anyway?”
“Well, since mom’s fashion lines are more famous all over Equestria, Photo Finish decided to give mom a second look,” said Claire. “Plus, Photo Finish is looking for a teen mare for a photo shoot too.” Annie and Claire arrived in the all too familiar workroom where a white mare with a deep blue mane was busy trying to impress another mare with light blue fur, a snow-white mane and wearing large, purple sunglasses and a long black dress with white stripes. Standing a few feet away was Turquoise who looked on while Cotton Candy jumped around the lady with sunglasses, squealing and babbling incoherently. “Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!” squealed Cotton Candy. “This is such an honor, Mrs. Photo Finish. I’ve read all of your magazines.” Photo Finish meanwhile seemed too engrossed by the dresses that Rarity was showing off to pay any attention to Cotton Candy. Turquoise then rushed over to Cotton Candy. “Candy please,” he said. “She’s kinda in the middle of something.” Turquoise then led Cotton Candy over to the spot where he was standing and they looked on as Rarity tried to impress the famous fashion photographer.
“What do you think of this, Mrs. Finish?” said Rarity showing off a long, deep red dress.
“Oh, it iz much too long,” said Photo Finish in a thick, Germane accent with her nose upturned.
“How about this?” said Rarity showing her a shorter deep, blue dress.
“Rarity,” began Photo Finish in an exasperated tone “Dis photo shoot iz meant to illustrate summer. It iz a time of beaches, fun in ze park und enjoying Celestia’s sun. Dis dress iz an absolute contradiction!”
“Oh please forgive me, Mrs. Photo Finish.”
“Have you no apparel zat most youths of today dress in?”
“Well, most of the clothing girls wear today are quite tight and look uncomfortable. I thought young ladies might want clothing that is more accommodating.”
“Honestly, Rarity, I don’t understand how you have so many boutiques across Equestria vhen you don’t observe and appreciate current trends. Ze secret to my magazine’s success all of zese years iz zat we were always up-to-date on vhat ponies were currently wearing. You on ze other hoof, seemed to be trapped during ze years of Luna’s banishment!”
“Hey, cut mom some slack,” said Turquoise with a stern face. “At least she’s trying to be creative.”
“Child, if you have worked in ze fashion business as long as I have you would know zat trying to do something different iz ze death of your career,” said Photo Finish glancing over to the pony/dragon hybrid.
“Geez, mom told me that Photo Finish was a bit full of herself,” whispered Anthea to Claire. “It doesn’t sound like she mellowed since the last time they met.”
Suddenly Photo Finish glanced over to the female pony/dragon hybrid and the unicorn mare. “Sube Prinzessinnen!” she exclaimed in her Germane tongue. She then rushed over to Anthea and started circling her, examining the blind pony from head to toe. Anthea meanwhile sensed the photographer’s presence and gradually became uncomfortable. “Uh, Claire, did I do something wrong? Because this lady won’t stop staring at me,” said Anthea.
“Zat fur. Zat mane,” said Photo Finish finally facing Anthea. “Your appearance falls in line with Summer in every vay! And those eyes. I do not believe I have seen such lovely eyes.”
“You think my eyes are lovely?” said Anthea with a slight blush.
“But of course, my dear,” said Photo Finish. “You have the eyes that vill draw so many young stallions towards you.”
Claire’s eyes widened with Photo Finish’s last statement. Claire then looked over to her younger brother who stared daggers at Photo Finish. It was clear that he did not like the idea that Photo Finish wanted Anthea to win the affection of other stallions. Cotton Candy meanwhile placed both of her fore hooves to her mouth trying to suppress a squeal. “Well, the reason my eyes may look like that is because I’m blind and these eyes already drew one stallion towards me,” said Anthea.
“Vait, you are blind?” said Photo Finish drawing closer to the young unicorn with a surprised look.
“Well, yes. But my magic helps me see blotches of color. I mean, even though I can’t exactly see your face, I could tell that you have light blue fur and a white mane.”
“Amazing,” said Photo Finish rubbing her chin with her hoof. She then placed both of her fore hooves on Anthea’s shoulder. “You, dear child, are perfect!” she said.
“Excuse me?” said Anthea in bewilderment with her eyes not quite meeting the fashion photographer’s.
“Your face shall be ze symbol my summer theme,” said Photo Finish wrapping one hoof around Anthea’s shoulder and slowly guiding her across the room. “You have a demeanor zat simply radiates innocence and ze fact zat you’re blind shall be an inspiration for all creatures with disabilities.”
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Photo Finish. I still don’t follow.”
“I vant you to be part of my photo shoot for dis year’s summer theme!”
Anthea was suddenly perplexed by the fashion photographer’s words. She always thought there was more to life than being the adopted daughter of the Element of Kindness, the girlfriend of the second pony/dragon hybrid born in Equestria and Princess Twilight’s magical protégé. It would be refreshing to do something different for a change. Then she remembered Fluttershy’s account of how negative her experience as a model was under Photo Finish’s guidance. “I’d really love to, Mrs. Photo Finish,” said Anthea. “But I’m not sure that I want a long career as a model.”
“Vhat I offer iz not a long career, child,” said Photo Finish. “Dis iz an annual photo shoot and over ze years different mares and stallions your age have answered ze call to remind ze young generation how vonderful summer iz. Some have used zat experience to pursue a full-fledged modeling career. But most have moved on with a sense of accomplishment zat they have told their peers how to enjoy summer.”
“Come on, Annie,” said Cotton Candy prodding the blind unicorn. “It’s only a temporary thing.”
Anthea bowed her head deep in thought. Opportunities such as the one Photo Finish was offering were few and in between. She then let out a sigh and a smile appeared on her face. “I’ll do it,” said Anthea.
“Excellent!” said Photo Finish standing on her hind hooves with her fore hooves outstretched in victory. She then grabbed Anthea by a shoulder. “Come, child. Let us make ze magics!” said the fashion photographer. “Rarity, I trust zat you can come up vith a new mare’s attire in a short space of time, correct?”
“I’m fairly certain I could,” said Rarity with a hint of apprehension in her voice.
“Good!” said Photo Finish. “Remember, ze finished product must reflect a youthful energy or it is no good!”
“Will do.”
“Now, Miss…uh. Vhat is your name again?”
“Anthea,” said the young unicorn mare.
“Anthea. Lovely name,” said Photo Finish. “We go!”
Rarity and her children looked quite dumbfounded. Cotton Candy was simply beaming with excitement. “Are you sure you can make new dresses for this thing, Mom?” said Claire. “Photo Finish sounds as if she’s in a bit of a hurry.”
“I have three of the best sewers living a few blocks away,” said Rarity. “They would be more than happy to assist.”
“I don’t believe it!” said Cotton Candy excitedly. “Annie is gonna do a photo shoot with Photo Finish. The Photo Finish!”
“I’m not sure she’s ready to handle the attention she’ll get from this thing,” said Turquoise.
“Aw, are you afraid that all the colts will start drooling over your fillylfriend?” pouted Cotton Candy.
“No!” said Turquoise displaying a flustered demeanor.
“Sure you aren’t.” responded Claire sarcastically.
“I’m just saying that if Mrs. Fluttershy’s experience as a model was bad, what makes you think that Annie’s experience will be any better?” said Turquoise.
“Photo Finish doesn’t want to make Anthea a full-fledged model, darling,” said Rarity. “It’s only a temporary thing. And as for the attention that’s sure to come, Anthea has proven time and time again that she could hold her own before large crowds.”
“I guess you can thank Amber Lily for that,” interjected Cotton Candy.
“Do you think we should tell Mrs. Fluttershy, Mom?” said Turquoise.
“It’s best that she be kept in the dark about this,” Rarity responded with a slight pause. “We shouldn’t let anything ruin this once in a lifetime opportunity for her child.”
“You’re not gonna be jealous by any chance, are you?” asked Turquoise turning to his older sister.
“Do I look like mom to you?” said Claire snidely. Rarity in response glared at her daughter.
To The Heart Through the Stomach
It was now nine in the morning when Api, Pixel and Echo set up their quiche stall near Sugarcube Corner. Api puffed her chest and put on her most confident face after watching the performances of her mom and Auntie Applejack countless times selling apples in the town square. “Quiche squares!” announced Api. “Get your fresh quiche squares! Only five bits!”
“Are you sure anypony would even want we’re selling, Api?” asked Pixel. “Ponies would much rather have something cool to drink during hot summer.”
“Oh, Pixel,” said Api. “Of course everpony would usually buy lemonade. But if we started selling that then we would have unwanted competition. A Quiche square is what Ponyville isn’t used to eating. It only sells in fancy places like Canterlot.”
“I sure hope we start selling soon,” said Pixel. “I have to get back home at two this afternoon to help Mom and Dad with an interview Mom’s having with some magazine.”
“Well, it’ll probably help if you start getting everyone’s attention,” said Api. Pixel soon joined Api in promoting their quiche stars. Despite their efforts, all of Ponyville’s residents seem to be passing their stall straight. Api started making her announcements with greater intensity throwing her voice as far as it could go across the town square. The only one who did not seem to be making the effort to promote the rare treat was Echo. She leaned against the stall with one hoof under her chin displaying a look of sadness. Api suddenly took note of Echo’s demeanor, so too did Pixel. Echo then let out a sigh. “Okay, what’s the problem?” inquired Api.
“Oh, nothing,” said Echo straightening herself up.
“Come on, Echo,” said Pixel. “That’s not true and you know it.”
Another sigh escaped Echo’s mouth. “Well,” she began. “I ran into Quickstep while you and Pixel went over to Sweet Apple Acres to pick up the rest of stuff.”
“Really?” said Api beaming with excitement. “That’s so awesome!”
“Did you two kiss?” said Pixel with a wide grin.
“No!” Echo said with a blush on her face. There was then a pause. “But I did find out that he’s living a few blocks down the road,” Echo added.
“Cool!” said Api. “So now you can visit him anytime you want.”
“I don’t know,” said Echo with her face downcast. “He probably thinks I’m stuck up after ditching him.”
A look of horror appeared on Api’s face. She always saw herself as the top matchmaker in Ponyville despite evidence to the contrary. In her mind Echo was going to ruin Api’s good reputation in said field. “You ditched him?” said Api grabbing Echo by both shoulders. “What do you mean?”
“Well, he asked me to go down by the lake with him this afternoon,” Echo explained. “But I know you needed help selling these quiche squares…”
“Echo, you idiot!” exclaimed Api. “The colt of your dreams just asked you on a date and you toss him aside like a smelly sock?”
“I don’t think it was a date,” said Echo. “I think he just wants somepony to take site seeing since his parents are busy.”
“Echo, that lake is virtually in the middle of nowhere,” Api said firmly. “Of course it’s a date!” Api then spun the Pegasus filly around. “Get your flank down to that house and tell Quickstep that you’re going with him to that lake.” Api ordered.
“But don’t you guys need help?” said Echo.
“Pixel and I will handle this. Just go!”
Echo started running away from the stall on her way to Quickstep’s humble abode. “Hey, Echo, wait up!” Pixel called out running towards the young Pegasus. Pixel had a quiche square floating next to her. Soon she caught up with Echo. “You didn’t have any breakfast, so have a quiche to go,” Pixel said as she gave Echo the quiche.
“Thanks,” said Echo with a smile. She then shoved the entire quiche in her mouth and continued on her way to Quickstep’s.
“Make sure you give us all the juicy details,” Api called out.
“Okay!” said Echo with a full mouth. Soon Echo was out of sight and Pixel walked back to the stall.
“Do you think she has a chance with that kid?” said Pixel as she approached Api.
“Why wouldn’t she?” retorted Api. “They both love sports. They both have family members who are athletes. They’re made for each other.”
“I’m worried that she might start hanging out with Quickstep more than us.”
“Come on, Pixel. Our moms still visit each other after marrying our dads. I know Echo won’t forget about us if she marries Quickstep.”
“It’s a little too soon to be talking about marriage, don’t you think?”
“Hey, anything’s possible.”
Api and Pixel continued to announce the presence of their quiche squares. Thirty minutes eventually passed and no one seemed to show interest. Discouragement began to creep up on the two fillies, Api in particular. All of her hard work seemed to be going down the tubes. That was until a blue unicorn colt with a dark blue mane with a light blue streak approached their stand. “What are you doing here, Nightlight?” asked Api with a hint of annoyance. “We’re not selling books, you know.”
“I know,” said Nightlight. “But I always loved quiche squares.”
“You love quiche squares?” said Api leaning over to him with wide eyes.
“Yeah, Mom always brought some over to the castle from Canterlot,” explained Nightlight. “It’s really convenient that I could finally buy them right here in Ponyville.” Night Light then took note of Pixel’s presence. He started slightly tremble. He always had a deep crush on the unicorn filly. Despite his best efforts to express himself to her, Pixel always seems to be unaware of Nightlight’s feelings. “Oh, hi Pixel,” said Nightlight with a nervous smile. He then cleared his throat and put on a confident smile. “Hey, I’m preparing for an interview with the dean from The Royal School for Gifted Unicorns later in the afternoon.”
“Is that the same school your mom got into when she was a filly?” said Pixel with her eyes widened.
“Yup, I’m gonna continue the legacy by applying for registration,” said Nightlight proudly. “Once they take me into consideration I could show up for their entrance exam. I know for a fact that I’m gonna blow that exam right out of the water!”
“Well, good luck with that,” said Pixel. “Let us know if you need any help with coming up with a name for the dragon you hatch.”
“No, I doubt it’s gonna be another dragon egg,” said Nightlight. He then leaned against the stand, cocked an eyebrow and smirked at Pixel. “So,” he began. “How about a kiss for good luck?”
“Tell you what,” Pixel started. She then levitated a box containing fresh quiche squares towards Nightlight. “Have a box of your favorite treats for good luck,” she said.
“That’ll be five bits,” interjected Api.
“Five bits?” said Nightlight with shock.
“It’s not like you can’t afford it, your highness,” said Api condescendingly.
Nightlight then displayed a scowl. Five shiny bits engulfed in his magical aura and levitated from his saddle bags to the top of the stand. “Anything to have me some quiche,” said Nightlight. “See you later, Pixel.” Nightlight then furrowed his eyebrows at the brown spotted filly. “ Api,” he said in a flat tone.
“Nighty,” responded Api in likewise manner. Nightlight made his way behind a building disappearing from the fillies’ sights. He started to make his way towards the Friendship Castle when a yellow Pegasus mare with large wings hovered over him. “Watcha got there?” asked the mare.
Nightlight looked up and recognized the mare to be his older sister. He scowled and started to quicken his pace. “Nothing,” he said.
“Well, if it’s nothing then I guess you wouldn’t mind if I take a look,”
Starburst grabbed the box he was levitating and flew a few feet away. “Hey, give it back!” Nightlight demanded as he ran towards Starburst. Starburst opened the box and she beamed when she discovered six large quiche squares. “Oooh, don’t mind if I do,” she said as she took out three squares. She then took a big bite from one of them. “They taste just like the ones Del makes,” she said with a full mouth.
“Those are mine, Starburst!” yelled Nightlight as he caught up with his older sister.
“Oh, quit whining,” said Starburst dropping the box that Nightlight caught with his magic. “There’s three more left,” Starburst continued. “You can’t eat all six for yourself.” With those words Starburst casually flew away devouring the last two quiche squares in her possession. Nightlight looked on and let out an angry growl. He then levitated the box containing the last three quiche squares and trotted down the path that led to the castle.
A sense of accomplishment washed over Api. She finally managed to sell her first box of quiche squares, to royalty no less. However, Api felt as though she should have charged higher given Nightlight’s title. “Alrighty!” said Pixel pumping her hoof. “We sold our first box.”
“That’s only one,” said Api. “We’ve got a long way to go.” Just then the fillies spotted a dark blue Pegasus stallion trotting across town square at a rather slow pace with his head down. It was a site that seemed out of place because the young colt that possessed a mane of multicolored hair had a reputation for being bombastic, full of confidence and always trotted or flew around with pride on his face. Nothing less was expected from the son of Wonderbolts Rainbow Dash and Soarin’ Skies. Speaking of the Wonderbolts, this colt tried and failed to make it into the organization, not without getting a gnarly scar above his nose while training. A scar that he hid with a Band-Aid. “Hey, Prism Bolt!” Api called out waving her hoof.
“Oh, hey girls,” said Prism trotting over to them. “What’s up?”
“Well, we were about to ask you the same thing,” said Api. “You look kinda down.”
“Yeah, that’s not like you at all,” said Pixel. “Are you still upset over breaking up with Whirlwind?”
Prism Bolt let out a sigh. “I honestly thought I’d be over her by now,” he said. “Usually Mom has a tall glass of cider to help her get over a bad day. But I’m not old enough to drink.”
“Well, instead of cider,” said Api as she reached over to one of the boxes. “how about a box of quiche squares to help brighten your day?”
Prism Bolt looked at the white box with wide eyes. He then opened the box to find six fresh quiche squares. “Is this the stuff Del usually makes?” said Prism “I didn’t know you could make them.”
“Baking runs in the Apple Family,” said Api displaying a proud smile and a puffed chest. “Is it such a surprise?”
“Great, I’ll take it.”
“That’ll be five bits,” said Pixel.
“You got yourself a deal,” said Prism with a wide smile. He reached into his saddle bags and pulled out five shiny bits and dropped them in front of the two fillies. He took the box and turned the other direction. Before he could fly off Api held up a hoof and said “Hey, Prism, I got an idea.” She trotted over to the other boxes and placed one in front of the blue Pegasus. “Maybe you could give this one to Whirlwind,” said Api. “You know, as a way to patch things up with her.”
“That’s a great idea!” said Prism excitedly. He then turned around to fly off.
“Five bits, please!” said Api stopping Prism in his tracks. Prism turned around with a sheepish smile etched on his face. “Oh, right,” he said. He then dropped five more bits on the stall. “Maybe I could let Icy try some while I’m at it,” said Prism. “Catch you later!” With those words Prism flew off. Minutes after the Pegasus took his leave ponies and other creatures started to slowly surround Api and Pixel’s stall, each requesting their own box of quiche squares. As timed dragged on Api and Pixel found themselves passing box after box to huge crowds.

Nidra soared across the skies in her Jet Stream disguise. Noticeably absent were Illusion and Valiant Heart who chose to stay behind in Ponyville. Nidra had to put aside food for other plans. In three days’ time the Wonderbolts were touring in The Crystal Empire to display their acrobatic feats. Nidra was always quite fond of the Wonderbolts particularly of its male members. In her mind this tour was not one she should enjoy on her own. When she sought to buy a ticket for the tour she bought an extra one. This extra ticket was to be reserved for a certain half pony/half dragon. Turquoise’s father was still quite popular in the Crystal Empire for helping save the empire from King Sombra and for being the first to help build a bridge between changelings and ponies namely through a certain changeling named Thorax. Turquoise along with Claire was sure to be just as famous. Nidra had the Carousel Boutique in her sights about couple of meters away. “‘Greetings and salutations, Turquoise’,” she said to herself as she tried rehearsing how to go about proposing her planned date. “No,” she said shaking her head. “That sounds too regal.” Nidra then cleared her throat. “‘What’s up, you tall and handsome hunk of love’,” she said trying to sound casual. “Come on, Nidra,” she said scolding herself. “Now you’re making yourself sound too desperate. No need to go overboard imitating the filthy commoners.” Nidra neared closer and closer to the Boutique. “‘Hi, Turquoise,”” she said to herself. She nodded her head in approval. She had finally hit the right note. “‘Oh, these?’” she continued. “‘Just two tickets to the most spectacular acrobatic team in Equestria. The Wonderbolts have a tour in The Crystal Empire. Wanna come? Anthena? Oh, I’m sure she’ll be too busy with her magic studies at The Friendship Castle. Besides, doesn’t she hate flying? Your father’s pretty famous in The Crystal Empire. I’m sure you’d like to experience having adoring fans love you too.” Nidra pumped her hoof in victory. “Yes!” she said. “Nailed it.”
Nidra landed softly on the ground right before the pathway that led to The Carousel Boutique. She let out a sigh and composed herself as she started to make her way to Turquoise’s home. She was about twenty feet away from the entrance when she noticed a lot of activity going. There were ponies dressed in Avant Garde clothing sorting out other types of clothing and building up a small stage surrounded by artificial plants and trees. Out of the front door came an elderly earth pony mare belting out instructions to the ponies. Nidra’s eyes went wide and her jaw slackened when she instantly recognized the elderly mare as Photo Finish. Nidra always loved Photo Finish’s magazines and her keen eye for fashion. Nidra also had the honor of attending one of Photo Finish’s fashion shows. However, actually meeting Photo Finish face to face always seemed to elude the princess. Though Nidra was on a mission to win the heart of Turquoise, she knew that she would never have another opportunity to meet up with one of the most famous figures in fashion. Nidra determined that if she was to present herself to Photo Finish she would not shake hooves with Photo Finish as Jet Stream. Nidra quickly disabled the magic that kept her Jet Stream disguise intact.
“Alright, just place zose palm trees right over there,” instructed Photo Finish. “No, on ze right and make sure zose dresses are extra pressed!” At those words a male member of Photo Finish’s entourage frantically started steaming some dresses on a clothes rack. “Rarity,” barked Photo Finish. “is our star ready?”
“Just give us about five minutes,” said Rarity peering from behind the door. Meanwhile Claire was helping Anthena get into a yellow jersey dress. After putting on her dress Claire directed Anthena to a nearby mirror. A smile came across Claire’s face. “You look so gorgeous, Annie,” said Claire. “I could barely recognize you.”
“You really think so?” Anthena said with slight apprehension. “Did Uncle Zephyr do a good job with my hair?”
“Of course he did. It was nice of Mr. Zephyr Breeze to take a little time off from his salon to help with hair styling.”
“Is the dress really that beautiful? I can’t really tell because all I could see is one big yellow blur.”
“It is beautiful. Plus, it has the youth vibe Mrs. Photo Finish is looking for. Now come on, time to make some magic.” Claire led Anthea through the door and out in the hallway that led to downstairs. Waiting in the hallway were Cotton Candy and Turquoise. “Ooohh! You look so cute, Annie,” said Cotton Candy holding both of her cheeks and suppressing a squeal.
“Yeah, Annie,” said Turquoise with a nod. “You were definitely made for the camera,”
“Humph! An hour ago you were worried that I was too good for the camera,” said Anthea snidely. Claire led Anthea downstairs where they were met by Rarity. “Oh, you’re ready, darling,” said Rarity approaching Anthea. Using her magic Rarity fixed the neckline of Anthea’s dress. “Just remember to listen to Photo Finish’s instructions carefully”, said Rarity. “Try not to be too spontaneous.” Anthea put on her best smile and lifted up her chin as Claire led her to through the front door.
Anthea and Claire arrived outside and an array of blotched colors met Anthea’s line of vision. She heard Photo Finish’s voice and turned her head to her left. Anthea spotted the blur that represented the fashion photographer and to her surprise, there was another blur standing right in front of Photo Finish; a blur that Anthena recognized all too well. “Claire, is that Nidra with Photo Finish?” said Anthea.
“It sure is,” answered Claire with a look of confusion on her face. “But what is she doing here?” Anthea and Claire walked a little closer towards the Princess and the fashion photographer. Photo Finish was more audible than Nidra but both Anthea and Claire could not make out the discussion that Photo Finish and Nidra were having. Photo Finish took note of Anthea and Claire’s presence and she immediately stopped talking to Nidra. Photo Finish then turned to Anthea and said “Oh, Anthea! I vas just having a discussion vith Princess Nidra. I understand you two have quite a history.”
“Uh…yeah,” said Anthea with slight discomfort. “She usually comes around when I’m dating Turquoise.” Nidra glared at the blind unicorn mare. A look of sorrow then appeared on Bat Alicorn’s face. “Oh, is that all you have to say of me, fair Anthea?” said Nidra dramatically. “I go out of my way to show you kindness. I even bought these two tickets to the Wonderbolts tour of the Crystal Empire for you and Turquoise to go to. Turquoise could even describe the beauty of the Crystal Empire to you and you would find a new appreciation as to why Mr. Spike is such a legend to the crystal ponies.” Two tickets wrapped in Nidra’s magic floated right in front of Anthea’s face. Anthea stared at the two blurs floating before her. It was certainly uncommon for a Princess with a reputation of being rude and mean-spirited to virtually everyone around to give away tickets to the most famous group in probably all Equestria. However, a part of Anthea thought that maybe Nidra was turning over a new leaf in order to be a better princess in the future. Anthea’s horn began to emit magic as she proceeded to take the tickets. Suddenly Claire stepped in between Anthea and the tickets. Claire then turned to Nidra’s direction. “You know, I find it hard to believe that you would leave the comfort of Canterlot just to come all the way to, according to you, “a backwater hick town” to give Annie some tickets, Nidra,” said Claire with a suspicious look on her face. “What are you really doing here?”
“I’ve told you, I came to bestow these tickets to Annie for the Wonderbolts show in the Crystal Empire,”
“But zen I realized Princess Nidra vould be perfect for dis photo shoot,” interjected Photo Finish.
Claire and Annie’s eyes went wide. “What?” said Claire dumbfounded. “I thought you wanted Anthea?”
“Oh, I did,” said Photo Finish. “But I have always vanted a member of royalty for one of my photo shoots. Dey alvays seemed to be unavailable. However, Nidra came at ze right moment so I could not let dis opportunity pass.”
Claire eyes furrowed. Princess Luna’s only daughter always got what she wanted for the most part whether it was by bribing, bullying, manipulation and blackmail. Nidra promising Photo Finish a fancy handout in exchange for being Photo Finish’s face of summer was a huge possibility. “That’s why you came down here, did you?” Claire said pointing an accusatory claw at Nidra. “You came down here just to charm yourself to Photo Finish so she could make you a model on the spot.” The Princess gasped and displayed a look of feigned shock. “I didn’t even know Photo Finish would be here, Claire,” Nidra insisted. Just then Rarity, Cotton Candy and Turquoise walked out of the front door. “Are we all ready, Mrs. Photo Finish?” said Rarity as she approached the fashion photographer
“There have been a change of plans of plans, Rarity,” said Photo Finish. “Princess Nidra shall be ze face of dis year’s summer theme.”
Rarity, her son and Pinkie’s daughter stared at Photo Finish in shock. They then turned to Nidra who flipped her mane and put on a proud, arrogant smile. “But I thought Annie was gonna be the model for this year’s theme?” said Cotton Candy.
“Yeah,” interjected Turquoise “You said that she could be an inspiration to a lot of disabled ponies.”
“Dat iz true,” said Photo Finish bowing her head and rubbing her chin in thought.
“But I could send a clear message to my young subjects how great summer is,” Nidra said pushing her way between Photo Finish and Turquoise. Nidra then started to bat her eyes towards Turquoise in a flirting manner. “After all, I do enjoy daytime more than nighttime,” she added with a smile.
“But with all due respect, Nidra, you’re a bat alicorn,” said Claire. “Surely someone like Nidra would more fit with a theme of night. Like you said, Mrs. Photo Finish, summer is about fun in the sun.”
“You do have a point,” said Photo Finish nodding her head slightly.
“But summer is just as fun at night since no kids would have to worry about school in the morning,” said Nidra with slight desperation in her voice.
“So true, your highness,” said Photo Finish turning to Nidra.
“Mrs. Photo Finish, please don’t do this to Annie,” pleaded Claire.
“Mrs. Photo Finish, surely you would agree that I’m the best choice to be the face of summer,” said Nidra turning the fashion photographer around so that they both would be facing each other. Rarity, Claire, Turquoise, Cotton Candy and Nidra slowly started to close in around Photo Finish drawing closer and closer. Photo Finish started to tremble. It seemed as if the weight of the decision she had to make was crushing her. Beads of sweat started to form on her forehead. Suddenly her eyes lit up when she came to a realization. “I’ve got it!” she exclaimed in Germane. She then trotted from the small crowd that crammed her. “Dis decision shall be decided by competition,” said the fashion photographer.
“By what now?” said Anthea with a cocked eyebrow.
“Get yourselves ready girls,” Photo Finish said facing Anthea. “Whoever can display grace, poise, confidence and attitude shall be ze face of dis year’s summer theme. Do you accept my challenge, child?”
“I…think so,” said Anthea with apprehension.
“You must be sure!”
“I’m positive!” said Anthea puffing her chest.
“What say you, your highness?” said Photo Finish turning to the princess.
“I was born for this,” said Nidra with bravado. “I’m totally up for the challenge!”
“Augezeichet!” said Photo Finish throwing up her fore hooves in triumph. “Come, it iz time for us to make ze magics. Ve go!”
Photo Finish made her way back into the Carousel Botique. Rarity and her children together with Cotton Candy and Anthea simply stood in the yard with blank stares. What Photo Finish requested was definitely a tall order to fulfill. Nidra meanwhile brimmed with overconfidence. “Don’t worry, Annie,” said Claire turning to the blind unicorn. “I’ll help you pick out your dresses and jewelry for this. I’ll teach you some things from what I’ve seen from the fashion shows mom took me to.”
“Oh please,” Nidra said scornfully as she walked towards Claire and Anthea. “No matter what you teach her, her blindness will only hold her back.”
“Aren’t you forgetting that she was the one who put a manticore to sleep?” said Claire.
“Fashion business is different from putting slobbering beasts to sleep. How could she possibly show poise and grace when she can’t even see her own hoof in front of her face?”
“Well, I best help get things organized,” said Rarity walking away towards the boutique.
“You’re just trying to one up Annie again by taking this thing away from her, aren’t you?” said Cotton Candy stomping towards Nidra with a stern face.
“Now, that’s not a nice thing to suggest,” said Nidra innocently. “It’s true, but not very nice coming from the daughter of the Element of Laughter. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a competition to win.” The Princess walked away from the group not before slowly passing her tail across Turquoise’s chin. A blush appeared on the pony hybrid’s face as he watched Nidra walking towards the boutique swinging her flank left to right. Nidra looked backed at Turquoise and winked before walking through the front door. Turquoise then looked towards Anthea who had a look of worry on her face. “Don’t worry, Annie,” he said resting his wing on her shoulder. “You’re gonna win this.”
Annie swallowed hard. “If you say so,” she said.

“Twenty-One, Twenty-Two, Twenty-Three, Twenty-Four,” said Pixel Bit as she counted off the money that she and Api Apple had already made for the day. For two hours business was absolutely booming. Compliments rained in from different ponies and creatures on how delicious the Apple Family’s quiche squares were and Api was more than happy to soak up all the glory. “Save the counting for when we close shop, Pixel,” said Api. “We’ve got a lot more quiche to sell.” Just then two stallions, a grey earth pony with jet black hair and a pale blue unicorn with a dark blue and light blue mane, trotted by. “Hello ladies,” said the earth pony with a warm smile.
“Hi, would you like a box of of our quiche squares?” said Pixel.
“Dude,” said Api whispering in Pixel’s ear “that’s Prince Illusion and Prince Valiant Heart.”
“Prince Illusion?” Pixel said with a shocked expression. She then squinted her eyes and gave the two stallions a closer look. “Claire always told me that you disguise yourself when you’re out in public,” she said. “But she never told me how you do it.”
“That’s because that would blow our cover,” said Valiant.
“If you’re looking for June she’s in Appleloosa with Mom, Uncle Big Mac and Auntie Applejack,” said Api.
“I know,” said Valiant. “I just feel the need to get away from the Crystal Empire a bit.”
“I just don’t understand you guys,” said Api in a frustrated tone. “You, Starburst and Illusion are famous royals and you don’t seem to like it.”
“It’s not that we don’t like it,” said Illusion. “But it’s refreshing to do something different instead of waving, smiling and getting pampered all day.”
“Anyway, word on the street is that you guys are giving away some quiche squares,” said Valiant.
“Yup, only five bits,” said Pixel with a big smile.
Suddenly a huge bag wrapped in Valiant’s magic floated from his saddle bag right towards the fillies’ line of vision. “Tell you what, I’ll take twenty for a hundred,” said Valiant. The girls’ jaws slackened. This was the biggest sale they would make should they take the prince’s offer. Api in particular could not let this opportunity pass by. “Sold!” she said excitedly. She then turned to Pixel “Grab twenty boxes, Pixel,” she said. The unicorn filly wrapped twenty stacked boxes in her magic and carried them over to Valiant. “Are you sure you want all of this for yourself?” asked Pixel.
“Yup, gotta make sure Mom, Dad, Flurry and the guys in the guard get a load of these,” said the Prince.
“I’ll just have one box,” said Illusion. Api pushed a nearby box towards him and Illusion paid his five bits. “Are you sure you don’t wanna buy extra boxes for your parents and Princess Luna to have any?” said Api.
“Sure I do,” said Illusion. “Nothing a little chaos magic can’t do.” A part of Illusion hoof formed into a white lion’s paw and he made a snap. Immediately the one box of quiche squares duplicated into fifty boxes. “Mother is sure to want to take a break from cake for once,” said the Prince of Chaos. “Be a good sport and help me with these, Lance.” Lance engulfed the twenty-five boxes in his magic and levitated them in a separate pile with his own quiche squares. I look of rage appeared on Api’s face. “Hey, you owe us for those extra boxes!” she said.
“I don’t recall seeing that on the sign,” said Illusion pointing to the sign that said CHEDDAR QUICHE SQUARES. 5 BITS FOR EACH BOX”. Api grumbled and leaned on the stall. “Hey, Lance, where’s Nidra?” said Pixel. “Isn’t she usually with you guys?”
“She ran off to the Carousel Boutique trying to steal Turquoise away from Annie,” said Valiant with a smirk.
“So typical,” said the unicorn filly shaking her head.

At the Carousel Boutique Anthea and Princess Nidra’s shoulders were draped with towels. Photo Finish’s entourage was putting the finishing touches on a scenery in the main workroom that included an artificial palm tree, some sand and a painted background that depicted a beach. Turquoise, Cotton Candy, Claire and Rarity stood in the corner as spectators. “Okay, ladies,” said Photo Finish. “For your first challenge you have a photo shoot against a scene most associated vith summer: Ze beach! Remember, you must show poise, grace and confidence. Now, ve go!” Photo Finish walked behind her camera and adjusted it on the tripod. “Princess Nidra, you first,” said the fashion photographer.
“Watch and learn, commoners,” said Nidra to Claire and Anthea who were close by as she placed sunglasses upon her face. She put on a confident smile and trotted her way to the little scenery. Once she was in view of Photo Finish’s camera a rather serious tone appeared on her face. Nidra stood in a position so that the camera caught at a three quarter angle of her body. “Perfect!” said Photo Finish as began snapping pictures. Nidra directly faced the camera as a member of Photo Finish’s entourage turned on the fan so that an illusion of a soft summer breeze descended upon the scene. Nidra slightly lowered her head so that her golden eyes peered over her sunglasses. “Beautiful!” said Photo Finish as she snapped four pictures of the princess. Nidra turned her back to the camera and dramatically looked back at the camera pouting her lips. Photo Finish snapped four pictures of Nidra in her new position. “Splendid!” said the fashion photographer. “Alright, Anthea, you’re next.” Nidra trotted away from the scenery straight towards the direction of Anthea and the others. Her muzzle moved close to the blind unicorn mare’s left ear. “Let’s see you top that,” she said softly. “Then again, you probably couldn’t see most of it.” Nervousness started to take over Anthea. “Don’t you worry, Annie,” said Claire resting her clawed hoof on Anthea’s shoulder. “You just remember what I’ve taught you.
“Yeah, knock ‘em dead!” said Cotton Candy. Claire guided Anthea to the scene and Claire left so that only Anthea was visible in Photo Finish’s viewfinder. The members of Photo Finish’s entourage turned on the fan to a slow speed to simulate soft breeze. Wearing a big floppy hat the unicorn mare trotted a few steps to her left and looked at the area where she was told Photo Finish’s camera was standing. Anthea was advised not to overdo it by showing wide smiles and batting eyelids. Across her face came a small smile with a relaxed facial express. “Anthea, you look simply adorable,” said Photo Finish as she snapped the pictures. Anthea tipped her hat and showed a friendly smirk. After the fashion photographer took her pictures Anthea laid flat on her stomach, placed her forehooves under her chin and tilted her head giving a warm smile. “Brilliant!” said Photo Finish. “Zat iz all for dis scene. Let me just say, Anthea, your cuteness abounds!”
“Thank, Mrs. Photo Finish,” said Anthea with a slight blush.
“Please, child. You may simply call me Photo Finish.”
“Alright, Photo Finish.”
Nidra scowled as Anthea walked pass her. “I swear that unicorn only uses her blindness to have everything handed to her on a silver platter,” she grumbled to herself.
***
“For dis shoot, ze scene iz a fun day in ze park,” said Photo Finish as she addressed Nidra and Anthea. Nidra and Anthea were now dressed in casual tops that still showed a hint of Rarity’s touch of elegance. Behind them was scenery set up by Photo Finish’s entourage that represented a park with bushes here and there and city skyline in the background. “You must be as relatable as you possibly could,” continued Photo Finish. “You especially, your Highness. Yet maintain an air of confidence. You first, Princess.”
Nidra’s confident smile appeared on her face as she trotted towards the scenery. She displayed an array of poses, copying most of the poses she had seen in numerous fashion magazines. When it was Anthea’s turn she immediately remembered the walks she had with her adoptive mother. From those memories Anthea decided that her posing routine would highlight the beauty and importance of nature. All of her posing radiated her absolute adorability. Next posing scene was a backdrop of a city. Both Nidra and Anthea were dressed in jeans and stylish short-sleeved tops in order to achieve Photo Finish’s vision of “hipness” worthy of Manehattan. The Princess’ posing routine displayed assertiveness and a great deal of sassiness while the blind unicorn mare’s posing routine emphasized fun and an unlimited amount of cuteness. After the city photo shoot Photo Finish overlooked the photos she had taken of both girls in the different scenes. At her side were Rarity, her children and Cotton Candy. “Have you made a decision yet, Mrs. Photo Finish?” asked Rarity.
“To be quite honest I am not close to making a decision,” said the fashion photographer. “Princess Nidra conveys a type of confidence and assertiveness zat most youths her age fail to convey if they vant to make it in the modeling industry. Anthea displays ze type of calm, easy going cuteness most fillies are known for. Dis does not make my decision any easier.”
“Well, you should totally pick Annie,” said Turquoise “Most teens love fun and you could see that in her pictures.”
“Zat is true, child. But on ze other hoof I would like to encourage more girls to enter modeling and having a princess of Equestria iz a great way to convey zat message.”
“Well, you could give a message that anypony could be a model,” said Claire. “By choosing Anthea it could give girls the confidence that the most common of ponies could appear in high profile fashion.”
Silence made its way among the group. Turquoise stared at the fashion photographer with great sternness on his face. He was determined that his girlfriend secured her place as the face of summer in Photo Finish’s magazine. If it meant threatening and bullying Photo Finish, so be it. However, his mother would surely not stand for it and Anthea would not rest easy knowing that Photo Finish chose her due to Turquoise going full dragon on the fashion photographer. Photo Finish had her eyes glued on the masterpieces that were the photos of Nidra and Anthea. Both girls possessed things she valued in modeling. Nidra had the extra confidence and sass while Anthea had the cuteness and relatability. How could she possibly choose one over the other? Suddenly she straightened herself up and a wide smile flashed across her face. She then turned to the ponies and dragon ponies that were looking over her shoulder. “Everyvone, I propose a final test for our lovely ladies,” said Photo Finish. “A runway challenge.”
“A runway challenge?” said Cotton Candy cocking her head.
“It iz vone thing to display their strengths while standing in vone place,” said the fashion photographer. “But can dey show ze same confidence and delight vhile trotting along a narrow strip?”
“What exactly are you suggesting, Mrs. Photo Finish?” said Turquoise.
“My decision vill be determined on ze runway,” explained Photo Finish. “She who can maintain poise, confidence and passion is the vone I choose to be in my magazine. She who makes but vone mistake iz done. Now, ve go!”
To The Heart Through the Stomach
Spike the Dragon was just as legendary as the Mane 6 and all the royals of Equestria combined. To many ponies, he was the first known dragon to grace the streets of Ponyville when he accompanied Twilight Sparkle to help with the Summer Sun Celebration long before she ascended to alicornship. To those in the Crystal Empire Spike helped end the threat of King Sombra and was the first to help build a bridge between ponies and changelings. To others in Equestria Spike was the father of the first known pony/dragon hybrids born in Equestria. But of course to Spike’s closest friends he was a regular dragon ready to assist in any way possible. He was very devoted to his family despite the age difference and obvious height difference between him and his wife Rarity. Spike still shared a close relationship to Princess Twilight and her family. When he wasn’t helping Rarity tend to the boutique or watch over Claire and Turquoise Spike enjoyed the weekends he would spend with his godchildren Starburst and Night Light. Spike would act as surrogate father of sorts to Starburst in particular whenever her parents were busy which seemed like most of the times. His habit was to help his closest friends see the absolute positive in life which served him well whenever he interacted with Starburst in her less than cheerful episodes. Spike’s habit was particularly useful when it came to helping Claire and Turquoise overcome their insecurities over their mixed genes.
It was late in the afternoon when Spike pounced the streets of Ponyville whistling a tune that he had been addicted to since his childhood days. He greeted a few ponies and other creatures here and there until his eyes caught a sign above a stall that read “CHEDDAR QUICHE SQUARES. 5 BITS FOR EACH BOX.” Spike’s face lit up and he walked his way towards the two fillies that manned the stall. “Hey, girls,” he said with a broad smile.
“Oh, hi, Uncle Spike!” said Pixel with wide eyes. “I thought you were helping out Princess Twilight?”
“Oh, I was done a long time ago,” Spike replied. “I just needed to check up on your Aunt and your cousins down at the boutique. So you’re selling quiche squares?”
“Yup,” said Api proudly. “Made by the Apple Family.”
“Anything baked by the Apples is great in my book,” said Spike. “I’ll take ten.”
“Deal!” said Api with a broad smile. She then directed Pixel to a stack at their left. The unicorn filly levitated ten boxes in front of Spike and in turn the dragon placed a brown sack of bits on the stall’s surface. He then picked up the boxes with the tip of his tail and carefully placed them on his back. “Thanks a million, ladies,” said Spike. He reached into his saddlebags, pulled out a huge sack of bits and placed on the stall. “There’s a big fat tip for you girls,” said Spike. “It’s a hundred bits. Think of it as a “thank you” gift.” The jaws of both Api and Pixel slackened. Api picked up the sack and shook it a little. “Thanks, Mr. Spike!” said Api through a big grin.
“You’re most certainly welcome,” said the dragon. Spike walked a few feet away but suddenly turned around to face the fillies. “Hey, Pixel, aren’t you supposed to be home helping your mom with that interview she’s having with that magazine?” said Spike. Pixel’s eyes went wide with horror. Earlier in the day she asked for Sweetie Belle’s permission to help Api with her quiche sale. Sweetie Belle gave Pixel her blessing provided that Pixel be home by three in the afternoon to assist in Sweetie Belle’s interview with the entertainment magazine Equestria Entertainment Weekly. “What time is it, Uncle Spike?” asked the unicorn filly. Spike pulled out a pocket watch from his saddlebag and popped open the lid. “About 2:45,” said Spike.
“Oh, my gosh!” exclaimed Pixel. “I totally forgot! You don’t mind running the stand yourself for the rest of the afternoon, do you, Api?”
“Don’t worry about it,” assured Api. “There isn’t much quiche the sell anyway. Take the rest of the day off.”
With those words Api took a box of quiche squares and handed it over to Pixel. “While you’re at it take a box,” Api said. “Your mom might like some.”
“I don’t know,” said Pixel shaking her head. “She’s a big music star. She wouldn’t wanna put on weight.”
“Well she isn’t on tour right now, is she?” asked Api.
“Well, no.”
“Good. Then one box wouldn’t hurt.”
Pixel’s magic engulfed the box and she turned away. “Dad might like some of these too,” she said to herself. “Uncle Spike, do you think you could drop me off by my house. I might get there faster.”
“Sorry, kiddo,” said Spike. “Your mother wouldn’t be happy if she found out I took you flying again.”
“Please, Uncle Spike. I don’t wanna be late.”
“Oh, what the heck? I’m sure Sweetie Belle would understand.”
Spike lowered his massive tail which acted as steps for Pixel. After Pixel climbed on his back Spike spread out his wings and took off into the sky. As they flew the box of quiche started slip off of Spike’s back. Pixel quickly caught it with her magic and held onto it with her front hooves.
***
Spike swooped down to the ground and landed gracefully on his feet. He straightened himself up and made his way to the Carousel Boutique. About twenty minutes earlier he dropped off Pixel at her house. Needless to say, Sweetie Belle was pretty upset that Spike took her daughter flying again after specifically warning him on several occasions how dangerous it is to take a filly her age flying. Spike felt that his sister-in-law should have shown more gratitude for at least getting her daughter home on time with only five more minutes to spare. Spike walked through the large door and discovered the main room looking different than what he was used to. There was a long runway in the midst together with studio lights on both sides. There were ponies applying makeup on two young mares that he was familiar with: Anthea and Princess Nidra. His wife and his children together with Cotton Candy were assisting in setting up the set and getting Anthea and Nidra ready. The one pony Spike was most aware of was the old earth pony mare at the camera: Photo Finish. She was in some ways responsible for him being honest about his feelings for his future wife. “Spikey Wikey!” exclaimed Rarity as she ran towards Spike. They both shared a small kiss and Spike once again beheld his surroundings. “Did I miss something?” he said.
“Oh, Photo Finish is here to pick who would be in the fashion spread of her magazine,” explained Rarity. “It’s tough competition between Annie and Nidra. So what we’re doing right now is supposed to determine the right mare for Photo Finish’s liking.”
“I could remember Photo Finish,” said Spike with a nod. His voice then lowered to a whisper “Is she still this overdramatic lady from when I was a kid?” Spike said in his wife’s ear.
“You have no idea, darling,” said Rarity softly.
“And seriously, how did Nidra get into this?”
“If the rumors about her are true, then my best guess is that she’s trying once again to prove that she’s worth the affections of Turquoise. Honestly, youths these today.”
The members of Photo Finish’s entourage added the finishing touches on Anthea and Nidra’s makeup. “Alright ladies,” announced Photo Finish. “Now is ze time for your final task. On dis runway each step you make must radiate confidence, passion and poise. It is only through dese traits zat readers, particularly today’s youth, gain inspiration to partake of the clothing zat sells all across Equestria. Remember, no mistakes or you are finished.” The fashion photographer trotted behind her camera and powered it up. “Princess, make your way to ze runway,” said Photo Finish.
“Turquoise, my dear, watch carefully so that you would know exactly what to look for in a lady,” said Nidra to the dragon pony that stood behind her. Gracefully, the bat alicorn climbed the steps of the runway and readied herself for Photo Finish’s instructions. Meanwhile Spike and Rarity took their places next to their children, Cotton Candy and Anthea. “Alright, Princess, begin!” said Photo Finish. Nidra walked her way down the narrow runway slowly but elegantly. She stopped midway displaying the best poses that came to her mind. Photo Finish’s continued compliments only fed Nidra’s ego. Though Anthea’s eyesight was poor at best, from listening to Photo Finish’s compliments she knew that Nidra was possibly hitting every right note. Cotton Candy then took note of the nervousness on Anthea’s face. “Don’t worry, Annie,” assured the earth pony. “You’re gonna do great.” Cotton Candy turned to her right and noticed Spike and Rarity eating from a box of quiche squares. Her eyes brightened and she walked over to the massive dragon. “Hey, Mr. Spike, what’s that stuff?” asked Cotton Candy.
“These are some quiche squares I bought,” said Spike “Sweet Apple Acres’ finest. If you want some I got some boxes on that chair over there.” Spike pointed to a single folding chair that was stacked with nine boxes. Cotton Candy trotted over to chair opened a box ate a quiche. Her eyes widened in delight. She then took a box and trotted over to the rest of the group. “Hey Annie,” she said “you gotta try one of these quiche squares. They’re delicious.” Cotton pulled out a quiche and handed it over to the blind unicorn mare. Before Anthea could take a bite the quiche was engulfed with a blue magical aura and it floated away. It floated all the way towards Claire whose horns were glowing with the same color magical aura that was wrapped around the quiche thus revealing that it was her who took away the quiche square. “Sorry, Annie,” said Claire. “But you’ve got a competition to win. You can’t have any distractions. Don’t worry. You’ll get some when the competition’s over.” With those words the quiche made its way into Claire mouth.
“Hey, can I have some of those?” asked Turquoise. Cotton passed the box over to Turquoise and he took one bite of the quiche. A broad smile stretched from ear to ear on his face and he wolfed down the rest. “I’m gonna past these onto every pony else,” said Cotton Candy.
“Make sure you leave a box for Annie after the competition,” reminded Turquoise.
Meanwhile Nidra arrived at the end of the runway and did a twirl. She turned her back towards Photo Finish’s camera and looked over her shoulder displaying a look with half closed eyes and pursed lips. “Splendid, Princess!” exclaimed Photo Finish clapping her hooves. Nidra then trotted all the way to the end of the runway. She climbed down the stairs and made her way towards the group. She stood right next to Turquoise making both their shoulders touch. Turquoise blushed slightly when he noticed the princess a little too close. “You were pretty great up there, Nidra,” said Turquoise.
“But of course I was,” said Nidra with a haughty laugh. “It would be interesting to see if the blind commoner could do any better.”
“Never underestimate the daughter of The Element of Kindness,” said Cotton Candy giving Nidra a stern look. Cotton Candy guided Anthea up the stairs and unto the runway. “Show ‘em what you got, Annie!” said Cotton Candy punching her hoof into the air. Anthea turned to the direction of Photo Finish’s camera seeing nothing but blur. She took in a deep breath and exhaled gently. “Alright, Anthea,” said Photo Finish. “Strut!” Anthea’s left front hoof stepped out first, followed by her right front hoof. Soon the young unicorn mare was making her way down the runway. Mentally, she went over the steps that Rarity and Claire that showed her earlier that day. She squared her shoulders and put on the most confident face she could think of. It was quite the challenge since she never knew exactly how a confident face looked like and had no example to draw from. With every step Anthea made the Photo Finish’s camera went off capturing every moment. Anthea made graceful steps until she arrived at the midst of the runway. She shifted to her left and looked to her right in the direction of the camera. “Yes! Yes! Yes!” said Photo Finish. “Doze eyes! Simply Beautiful!”
Anthea’s performance brought approving smiles and nods from Rarity and her family. Cotton Candy cheered on loudly. The only one who did not seem to be captivated by the sight was a certain bat alicorn. A scowl made its way upon Nidra’s face. She shook with rage as every compliment Photo Finish rendered upon the unicorn mare. “Yup, Annie could light up any picture,” said Turquoise. Nidra turned sharply to face the young dragon pony stallion. Her eyes were wide and her mouth hung slightly. Turquoise did not take notice of the shocked expression on the princess’ face. He was too caught up in the fact that Anthea was well on her way to being chosen for Photo Finish’s magazine. Nidra looked back at Anthea who was starting to make her way towards the end of the runway. Nidra internalized that she could not allow the blind unicorn to best her once again. Not in front of the fashion photographer she had admired for so long. Nidra’s eyes darted all over the area until her eyes were fixated on a bottle of body oil at the corner of the room. That oil was used when both Nidra and Anthea did their beach scene to give their fur some glow. A sly smile stretched across the bat alicorn’s face. All it took was one little mistake for the blind unicorn to be out of the running for Photo Finish’s magazine; one mistake that Nidra could easily arrange without detection. Nidra recalled a feat of magic that her mother Princess Luna performed that involved invisibility on inanimate objects. Princess Luna performed the feat in preparation for an event where enemy threats would likely seek to steal Canterlot’s prized royal artifacts. She made this possible by shooting a beam of magic at an object and the object turned invisible to the naked eye. Princess Luna was even able to carry this object with her magic and no one would see the object wrapped in her magic. Weeks later Nidra was able to convince her Auntie Celestia to teach her this magic under the pretext that it would make Nidra more prepared to protect Canterlot Castle’s valued possessions from thieves. It took Nidra five months to master this feat and though her magic was not as strong as Celestia’s and Luna’s, Nidra was able to perform this magical feat for about five minutes. Concentrating hard on this bottle of body oil, Nidra shot a beam of magic at the bottle and it became invisible. She then carefully levitated it over to the runway and poured the entire bottle over the runway not once attracting the attention of those present, especially Photo Finish. Nidra then levitated the empty bottle in a nearby trash can and before the bottle hit the bottom of the can the invisibility spell wore off.
Anthea struck a pose near the edge of the runway. “Ausgezeichnet, Annie!” exclaimed Photo Finish in her native tongue.
“Awesome job, Annie,” said Turquoise.
“Right on, Annie!” cheered Cotton Candy.
“Splendid!” said Rarity clapping her hooves.
“You go, kiddo!” complimented Spike.
“Great job, Annie,” said Claire. “Great job!”
A warm smile appeared on Anthea’s face. The self-doubt she harbored earlier in the day had all disappeared. She was now certain that Photo Finish would definitely choose her for the magazine. Anthea was now on top of the world. She turned around and started to make her way down the runway. She arrived in the center of the runway when suddenly she skidded a few meters to her right. She struggled to keep her balance and stay upright but the now slick runway was making that impossible for her. Whenever she tried to keep her hooves firm on the surface she would skid in all different directions. She kept slipping and sliding until the runway was no longer beneath her hooves. She fell right off the runway landing flat on her back. Almost immediately Rarity, her family, Cotton Candy and the members of Photo Finish’s entourage rushed to Anthea’s side. Only Nidra stayed behind in the corner of the room suppressing a laugh. Anthea struggled to her hooves looking around in confusion and with a pained look on her face. “Annie, are you alright?” said Turquoise helping Annie to her hooves. He felt guilty that he did not move fast enough to save her from hitting the ground.
“My flank hurts a little, but I’m alright,” said Anthea.
“That was such a horrible fall you took, darling,” said Rarity.
“Not a word of this to Mrs. Fluttershy, Cotton Candy” said Claire pointing a stern claw at the earth pony mare. “Got it?” Cotton nodded her head and made a zipped lips motion across her muzzle.
“Sweet Clestia!” exclaimed Photo Finish as she rushed to Anthea’s side. “Vhat did I tell you? I said to maintain poise und grace.”
“I’m sorry, Photo Finish,” said Annie. “I just slipped and fell.”
“I’m very sorry, Anthea,” said Photo Finish. “But since you have proven dat you cannot follow simple instructions, I simply cannot feature you in my magazine.” The fashion photographer’s announcement seemed to suck the wind out of Rarity’s family and Cotton Candy. The only one who seemed overjoyed was Nidra who had a gleeful expression that none in the room seemed to notice. “Come on, Mrs. Photo Finish,” pleaded Spike. “it wasn’t her fault.”
“It was a simple mistake, Photo Finish,” said Rarity. “These things happen.”
“Yeah, give her another chance,” said Cotton Candy with pleading eyes.
“Yeah, come on,” added Turquoise.
“I’m very sorry, everypony,” said Photo Finish shaking her head sadly. “But as I stated before, the one mare who can maintain poise, confidence and passion iz ze vone dat shall be in ze magazine. Anthea has shown that she cannot maintain poise.”
“But she showed passion and confidence,” said Turquoise with a hint of desperation. “Two out of three isn’t bad.”
“Vone mistake and you are done,” said Photo Finish sternly. “Dat iz vhat dis industry is built on.” The fashion photographer then turned to the bat alicorn. “Princess, get yourself ready,” said Photo Finish. “You are now ze face of dis year’s Summer Edition!”
Nidra could not stop beaming. She fought the urge to squeal with delight and maintained poise the way a princess should. “Well, I’m obviously humbled by this honor, Photo Finish,” said the bat alicorn. “But I assure you that you will not regret your decision.”
Annie bowed her head in sadness. She was so close and had hit all the right notes and just like that, her goal was snatched away on account of one foolish mistake. Turquoise wrapped his claw around her. “I’m sorry, Annie,” said Turquoise with an obvious sad tone. Anthea let out a deep sigh and looked up to him. “It’s alright,” said the unicorn mare with a weak smile. “Even though mom and I aren’t related by blood, I guess it’s not in any of our destinies to be models.”
“Rarity!” announced Photo Finish. “Bring out your apparel. Ve must begin shooting our first photos for this year’s Summer Edition.”
Rarity cocked her head and displayed a look of confusion. “What, now?” said the unicorn mare.
“These photos of ze princess must be delivered in two weeks,” responded the fashion photographer. “I need a new wardrobe on ze double. Ve go!”
Anthea’s heart sank. All her life she was always a pony who always tried to look at the glass half full be it her blindness or the fact that her birth parents allegedly abandoned her. This situation however was one she could not live down. As far as Anthea was concerned she excelled in every competition for Photo Finish’s selection. When it came to the runway walk, her goal of accomplishing something grand was stripped away all because of one little blunder. A mistake that could have been avoided. But how could she have possibly foreseen that something slick was spread across the runway? Come to think of it, Anthea could not recall such a slippery substance being present on the runway the first time she walked across it “It’s gonna be alright, Annie,” said Turquoise. “You’ll always be a top model in my book.” A smile formed on Anthea’s face and Turquoise started to lead her to the corner where the quiche squares were located. “The Apple Family’s quiche squares should help you get your mind off things,” said Turquoise. When they arrived at the corner where the chair with the quiche boxes were supposed to be located, all they found was the chair. Turquoise displayed a look of confusion and he looked around finding some members of Photo Finish’s entourage indulging themselves in quiche. “Hey, Cotton Candy did you leave a box for Annie like I asked?” said the young pony dragon hybrid.
“Yeah, there’s supposed to be a box on the chair that you’re looking at,” responded the earth pony mare. Turquoise looked around again and saw a box hovering in a golden magical aura. Next to the floating box was Nidra whose face was covered in crumbs and she was in the process of shoving a quiche in her mouth. “Um, Nidra, I think those were supposed to be for Annie,” said Turquoise. The princess looked at him in confusion and then at the floating quiche. She also looked at Anthea. Nidra then shrugged and a smug grin appeared on her face. “Well, your mouth can’t eat what your eyes can’t see,” said the princess as she shoved the remaining quiche in her mouth.
“Not cool, Nidra,” said Turquoise pointing a stern claw at the princess. Annie let out a sigh. “Well, I’d better get going,” she said softly.
“I’ll take you back home,” said Turquoise.
Turquoise then started leading Anthea to the entrance. “Turquoise darling,” called Rarity. “Will you be a dear and help your father and I get the place fixed up for Nidra’s photo shoot?” Turquoise displayed a look of annoyance. As beautiful as Nidra was Turquoise did not like the idea of staying back to help the mare who beat her girlfriend. Cotton Candy then took note of Turquoise’s expression and ran to Anthea’s side. “Don’t worry, T,” said Cotton Candy. “I’ll take her home.” Turquoise looked on as Cotton Candy led his marefriend to the front door. “Why waste your time with that blind commoner when you could be better acquainted with a winner?” said Nidra walking past him. Turquoise turned to face the princess who levitated the crumbs off of her face with her magic and right into her mouth. “Nidra, you’re a pretty mare,” Turquoise began hesitantly. “But with all due respect, there’s only one mare for me.”
“When my face is on Photo Finish’s magazine cover, you may want to reconsider that statement,” said Nidra. She then walked away not before passing her tail along Turquoise’s chin eliciting a blush from the young stallion.
At the entrance Cotton Candy and Anthea were inches away from the door when Cotton Candy suddenly felt a sharp pain. The pain was then followed by a rumble. Cotton Candy stopped dead in her tracks and started holding her stomach while letting out a painful groan. “Candy, are you alright?” said Anthea taking note of the earth pony mare’s groans.
“My stomach hurts,” groaned the earth pony mare. “But I’m sure I could trot it off.”
To The Heart Through the Stomach
Two weeks had passed since Ponyville, Canterlot and The Crystal Empire experienced seriously disgusting scenes. A great number of ponies fell into bouts of puking and diarrhea due to rancid quiche squares. It was estimated that about fifty ponies were diagnosed with food poisoning, among them all the royals of Equestria. Because of Nightlight’s blunder, he ruined his chances of ever making it into The Royal School for Gifted Unicorns. Not even Princess Twilight’s title as Princess of Friendship could undo what her son had done to the school’s representative. Equestria Entertainment Weekly had a scathing and unflattering article printed about Sweetie Belle and her family’s sit down with First Insight. Worse of all, Princess Celestia was never able to live down the sight of everyone witnessing her feces disaster at the Canterlot Castle. Applebloom, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo caught wind of the lucrative business being run by their daughters and the lack of responsibility that caused Ponyville’s to vomit five hundred bits worth of quiche squares. As a result, Sweet Apple Acres were forced to give full refunds and make a public apology for being somewhat responsible for causing food poisoning to befall half of Equestria. Also Api, Pixel Bit and Echo were grounded for the rest of the summer. For the daughters of the Cutiemark Crusaders, being stripped of the right to enjoy the summer and cutiemark crusading was a punishment worse than death! They were not even allowed to see each other for the next two months.
That however, didn’t stop Echo from deciding to visit Sweet Apple Acres to see how Api was holding up. On her way to Sweet Apple Acres her head was buried in the latest edition of Photo Finish’s fashion magazine. Echo heard that Anthea was being featured for the magazine’s summer theme and just had to see it for herself. Anthea truly looked stunning in her pictures and her clouded eyes were simply mesmerizing. Echo found herself being slightly jealous but above all proud of Fluttershy’s daughter. Echo raised her head out of the magazine discovering Sweet Apple Acres being a few feet away. She fluttered softly on the ground and tucked away her magazine in her saddlebags. She looked around cautiously for any sign of the elder residents of the apple farm. When she saw nopony she scampered over to the large feeding tray. She peered from behind the feeding tray and found Api pushing a block of straw across the farm. On Api’s face was a mixture of exhaustion and anger. “Psst!” Echo said. She then waved over to Api and catching the brown spotted earth filly’s attention. Api’s eyes widened in shock and she looked to her left then to her right. She scampered over to Echo’s position and grabbed her by the hoof. Both fillies scampered over to a wagon and crouched to the ground. “What are you doing here?” said Api in a hushed tone. “We’re both grounded and we can’t see each other!”
“I just wanted to see how you’ve been doing since last week,” responded Echo innocently.
“How you think I’m doing?” growled Api as she began to trot away. “I have to work extra on the farm. But that’s nothing compared to being run out of business because somepony didn’t plug in the refrigerator. You had one job, Echo! Because of you everypony puked like there’s no tomorrow! Not just in Ponyville but also in Canterlot and the Crystal Empire!”
Echo slapped her hoof to her face. “I thought I forgot something,” she said. “And I know that me saying “sorry” isn’t gonna change what happened.” Echo fluttered her wings which carried her over to Api who stood on a ladder as she filled the feed tray for the pigs. “If it’s any consolation,” said Echo as she landed next to the earth filly. “my date with Quickstep didn’t go over so well.”
Api froze dead on the ladder. She then jumped off the ladder and grabbed Echo by both shoulders and stared straight at her with wide eyes. “You two broke up?” Api said.
“Well, he didn’t really said it was over,” said Echo sheepishly. “But I threw up all over him and his parents said that I’m not allowed to see him again.”
Api let go of Echo and groaned. “Well that’s just great,” Api said in frustration. “I’m out of the quiche square business and my second attempt at matchmaking went totally bust!”
“Second attempt?” said Echo cocking her head in confusion.
“Prism came to me yesterday and started screaming at me telling me that Whirlwind punched him in the face telling him “That’s for giving me a rancid quiche square!”’
Echo sunk into the ground and hung her head in sadness. She certainly didn’t mean for her cousin to be affected in anyway by her blunder. Plus, any chance she had with Quickstep was vanquished. To think that she basically caused a good chunk of Equestria to virtually suffer the plague all because she was going gaga over some colt. She began to wonder if she should give up on colts all together. As Echo was thinking this, she glanced over to her left and her eyes widened when she saw none other than Princess Nidra coming in their direction. She was in her Jet Stream form pulling a wagon filled with apples. Her face was soaked with sweat and wore a long scowl. Echo looked at the princess in both shock and confusion. “Api, what’s Nidra doing here?” asked Echo.
“If you must know,” Nidra began angrily. “my mother is punishing me by making me work on this cursed farm for the entire summer!”
“Why?”
“Aren’t you aware that as Princess of the Night she could enter dreams? While I was in the hospital Mother entered my dream and found out that I caused Anthea to initially mess up her chance of being in Photo Finish’s magazine by oiling down the runway at The Carousel Boutique. Speaking of which!” Nidra unlatched herself from the carriage and marched right up to Api and Echo and stared them down with a look of absolute rage. “Because of you two I contracted food poisoning hence the reason why Photo Finish chose that blind commoner over me!” screamed Nidra. “You two and that video game addicted unicorn filly also caused me to ruin my chance with Turquoise! When I get off this farm I’ll give you all so many nightmares YOU WON’T SLEEP UNTIL YOU REACH PUBERTY!!!! ” Nidra’s Royal Canterlot Voice echoed throughout the farm causing a flock of birds to fly out of a nearby tree and into the skies. Nidra then walked back to her apple laden carriage and continued towards the barn. Api and Echo looked on in dead silence with terror on their faces. “Come on, Api,” said Echo shakily. “I’m sure everypony will forget about all of this soon.”
“How soon?” said a terrified Api turning to the Pegasus filly. The two fillies then glanced over to the farm’s fence and saw Rarity, Spike, Claire and Turquoise walking towards Ponyville. They all had weak, nauseous looks on their faces. “Of all the worse that could’ve happened. That was. The. Worst. Possible. Thing,” said Rarity weakly. “Two weeks in intensive care. Our home in shambles due to vomit. Our reputations taking a hit. We are never to speak of this again.” Api and Echo watched as the Dragon family walked away. A strong reminder of their business blunder. “Five months, tops,” said Echo.
To The Heart Through the Stomach
“Four hundred and ninety-four, four hundred and ninety-five,” said Api Apple as she counted off the bits that laid on the stall. The earth filly spent the last two hours selling off the last batch of quiche squares. It was five minutes to four in the afternoon and closing time was fast approaching. Api was pretty upbeat over all the good fortune that befell her that day and by the time she was finished counting her bits it all added up to five hundred. After counting her profits, she scooped them into a huge bag and closed the top. “Way to go, Api,” she thought out loud. “You made five hundred bits in a successful business, you helped Prism Bolt patch things up with Whirlwind and you helped Echo snag herself a cute colt. Ya did good, Api. Ya did real good!” Suddenly there was the sound of painful moaning and groaning that bordered on crying. Api turned to her left and found Prism Bolt and his little brother Icy Storm moving in her direction. Both brothers were hovering off the ground while flapping their wings and they were holding onto their stomachs with their fore hooves. They also had the look of absolute agony on their faces. Api meanwhile stared at the brothers with shock and confusion. Usually they both trotted around puffing their chests while making some flirty comment whenever a mare walked by. “What’s with you two?” asked Api with a cocked eyebrow.
“My stomach is giving me a major beat down,” groaned Prism. “It hurts so much that I can’t even trot.”
“My stomach’s killing me too,” said Icy with a painful moan. “I think it’s something we ate.” Icy’s eyes then widened when he came to a sudden realization. “Like your nasty quiche squares!” he said pointing an accusatory hoof at Api. Both Prism and Icy then hovered away holding their stomachs and continuing with their painful groaning. Api’s head snapped back and she became baffled at Icy’s accusation. “Nothing’s wrong with my quiche squares,” she called out. “Quiche squares are good. My five hundred bits said they’re good!” From the corner of her eye Api noticed someone approaching her at her left. Api turned to her left and found Starburst coming her way. Surprisingly Starburst too was hovering off the ground instead of trotting and she displayed a look of queasiness. Her massive wings flapped as she held onto her stomach and let out painful groaning. Api did not seem to notice the princess’ state. “Hey, Star, you’ll never believe what just happened,” said the earth filly. “Prism and Icy came around saying that my quiche squares were so bad it gave them stomach aches. Everypony’s a critic.”
“Hey!” shouted Starburst as she pointed a stern hoof at Api. “If your quiche squares have anything to do with why I feel like something’s trying to rip through my stomach, you’re dead meat!” A loud rumble escaped the princess’s stomach and she let out a painful groan. “If you’ll excuse me, I need to get to the Ponyville Hospital quick!” said Starburst. She then hovered away leaving Api alone with her thoughts.
What Api just witnessed was awfully similar to an incident that her Auntie Applejack once joked about. One day Applejack was helping Pinkie Pie bake muffins at Sugarcube Corner. But Applejack was so sleep deprived and exhausted after spending that entire week clearing the apple trees of their apples at Sweet Apple Acres all by herself. As a result, Applejack could not follow Pinkie Pie’s instructions to the letter and ended up putting the wrong ingredients in the muffin mixture which caused a good fraction of Ponyville’s citizens including Pinkie Pie to contract food poisoning. “No, this can’t be my fault,” said Api shaking her head vigorously. “I was awake when Del told me the ingredients and I did everything right. I used the right ingredients for the filling, I measured them all correctly, I made the crust exactly the way Del made it, I baked it to the right temperature, Echo put it in the refrigerator…” The earth filly then froze at her last statement. She then looked towards the back of Sugarcube Corner where the fridge was located. She trotted towards the back where she found the refrigerator’s plug laying near the refrigerator. She looked towards the refrigerator that was sealed tight and trotted towards it. She stood on her hind hooves and pushed against the lid of the refrigerator with her front hooves in an effort to open the refrigerator. She let out a grunt as she kept pushing against the lid. After a few seconds the lid flew open and a foul stench hit Api’s nostrils. The stench caused her to let out a groan and fall backwards. She could not believe that such a stench could possibly be coming from the refrigerator. She got back on her hooves and slowly trotted back towards the opened refrigerator. She looked down into the refrigerator and saw the white boxes of quiche squares. She opened one box and found it oozing with the filling. Worse of all the stench was overwhelming. Api turned away sharply from the refrigerator and held her nose. “Sweet Princesses!” exclaimed the earth filly. “It is the quiche squares!”

“Brilliant, Nidra!” said Photo Finish as she snapped her camera at Nidra. “Brilliant!” The bat alicorn was striking poses against a simulated backdrop of Vanhoover wearing a white jersey skirt designed by none other than Rarity herself. Rarity and her family looked on as the young princess seemed to be enjoying herself. Turquoise had a look of disgust on his face. As much as he considered Nidra to be a friend to some extent, being in Photo Finish’s magazine was something Turquoise believed Nidra did not deserve. However, he was too much of a gentlecolt to let everypony know how he truly felt over this injustice. As Nidra continued to exert confidence and poise in every photo that the fashion photographer took, Nidra suddenly felt a sharp pain in her stomach which made her stop in her tracks. She then held her stomach and let out a painful moan. “Princess, vot’s wrong?” asked Photo Finish. The fashion photographer then started to trot towards the princess. Bile rushed up to Nidra’s mouth making her cheeks swell. She then retched and a huge amount of projectile vomit flew from her mouth and landed all over Photo Finish. Photo Finish jumped back and beheld her condition in shock. “Mein dress!” exclaimed the fashion photographer. “It’s ruined!” Suddenly Photo Finish’s cheeks swelled and she vomited on the floor. Rarity meanwhile felt a sudden pain in her stomach and a loud rumble followed. Her cheeks swelled and she vomited projectile vomit right onto her husband’s chest. A loud rumble was also heard from Spike’s stomach and he too vomited a huge amount of projectile vomit right on top of Rarity. Claire’s cheeks swelled and projectile vomit flew from her mouth onto her little brother’s chest like water escaping from a hose. Turquoise in turn vomited right on top of his older sister after a loud rumble was heard from his stomach. All the members of Photo Finish’s entourage soon started vomiting projectile vomit all over Carousel Boutique. After their first bout of vomiting everyone started vomiting again.

“I just don’t know what happened, Cotton Candy,” said Anthea as she walked with the earth pony mare. “One minute I was doing just fine but when I started to walk back the runway got very oily and slippery.”
“Yeah, you were so close,” said Cotton Candy. “Nidra’s already a princess of Equestria. She doesn’t need to be in that fashion magazine.” The two young mares then started to make their way over a bridge. Suddenly a loud rumble was heard from Cotton Candy’s stomach which was picked up with Anthea’s sharp sense of hearing. “Is that your stomach again, Cotton Candy?” asked the unicorn mare. “I don’t know how you could be hungry after you had those quiche squares. Maybe we should grab some hay burgers.”
“Please, don’t talk about food,” said Cotton Candy with a groan.
“Cotton Candy, what’s wrong,” asked Anthea with concern. Cotton Candy felt bile rush from her stomach to her mouth. Cotton Candy’s cheeks swelled and she rushed over to the bridge’s railing. She retched causing a huge amount of projectile vomit to rain downwards. Unfortunately, a stallion and a mare having a romantic moment in a boat got soaked by all what Cotton Candy ate that day.

At The Friendship Castle Princess Twilight, her husband Flash Sentry and Nightlight Jr. were all seated in the living room entertaining the presence of a female guest. The guest was a representative of the Royal School for Gifted Unicorns formerly known as Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns which was changed after Princess Luna’s return from banishment. Such a school was an extremely hard school to enroll in and Nightlight’s parents were present to show their support. Nightlight was dressed in a business suit while Twilight was dressed in an elegant dress and her husband was dressed in a uniform. “Alright, Nightlight,” began the representative. “I see that you have an amazing ability to solve equations and other probabilities. But other than that, why should The Royal School for Gifted Unicorns consider you?”
“Well, I know that I can’t expect to be enrolled purely on the basis of my mom being The Princess of Friendship,” said Nightlight. “It’s certainly not something I’m entitled to being a prince. But I’ve always been interested in magic and I’ve seen how magic was able to help Equestria lots of times. I mean, I’ve helped my mother out in lot of trying situations.”
“Is this true, Princess?” asked the representative.
“Oh yes,” said Twilight proudly. “From an early age my son has demonstrated that he has an exceptional magical ability. I’ve been doing my part to help him hone his skills in the few teaching sessions I’ve been having with another student.”
“Nightlight helped me too,” said Flash Sentry. “Whenever I trained new recruits Night Light had the ability to recreate simulations like monsters and other threats so it was pretty useful.”
“That is quite interesting,” said the representative. “However, I still believe you may have another reason for wanting to enroll at our school. Am I right, Prince?”
“Well, now that you’ve mentioned it,” said Nightlight with slight hesitation. “I feel that my magic skills need more work. When I grow up, I want to be able to protect Equestria like any royal should because that shouldn’t only fall on my mother and the other Royals of Equestria. I want to inspire a lot of colts and fillies, not just unicorns, but pegasasi and earth ponies to show them that they could help Equestria in their own way and that they don’t need magic to…” before Nightlight could finish a loud rumble from his stomach was heard. The unicorn colt held his stomach, hunched over and let out a pained groan. Twilight and Flash rushed over to their son while the representative looked on with concern in her eyes. “Nightlight sweetie, are you alright?” said Twilight.
“Do you need any help, Your Highness?” said the representative. Suddenly Nightlight’s cheeks swelled. He looked up and a huge amount of projectile vomit flew from his mouth and right onto the representative. The representative let out a yelp and a mixture of horror and disgust appeared on her face as she beheld her state. She was completely covered with vomit and bile. Twilight and Flash looked on in shock and disbelief. Soon their focus shifted from their son to the representative. They both rushed over to the representative to console her. “I’m so, so sorry about all this, Madam,” said Twilight as she placed her hoof on the representative’s shoulder. “My son didn’t mean it.” Just then, Nightlight retched and an even bigger amount of projectile vomit landed on both Twilight and Flash Sentry. Both parents’ eyes went as wide as dinner plates as they became drenched in bile. “Nightlight!” exclaimed Twilight as she glared at her son.

Princess Flurry Heart sat in her chambers with a small crowd of children surrounding her as she read from a story book that her Auntie Twilight once read to her as a foal. At the door were two royal guards. The colts and fillies were from an orphanage in Phillydelphia and were guests of honor at the Crystal Castle. The older sister of Prince Valiant Heart was more than happy to entertain her guest and fill in for her parents who were busy attending to royal duties. While Valiant Heart always had his fun with Starburst, Flurry always acted like a second mother to her cousin whenever her Auntie Twilight and Uncle Flash were absent. Flurry would set strict boundaries and rules for Starburst much to Starburst’s annoyance. Although Starburst would not admit it, she was severely jealous of her older cousin. “And while nopony tried to reach Cloudsdale on hoof, Gusty the Great was not deterred,” read Flurry dramatically. “She and her unicorn warriors marched up the hill. But suddenly they encountered…” Flurry then made a dramatic pause.
“What was it? What was it?” asked a filly as she and the other foals moved closer to the princess with eagerness and suspense.
“It was the treacherous Grogar,” answered Flurry. “And Gusty could tell that he was ready for battle. Gusty called out to her unicorn warriors…” Suddenly a loud rumble followed by a sharp pain in Flurry’s stomach prevented her from finishing her sentence. She held onto her stomach and let out a painful moan. The colts and fillies looked on in confusion and concern. “Are you alright, Princess?” asked a colt.
“There’s something wrong with me,” answered Flurry with a groan. “This morning Prince Valiant Heart gave me a box of quiche squares and…” She stopped mid sentence when another loud rumble left her aching stomach.
“Prince Valiant Heart?” asked a second filly excitedly. “The Prince Valiant Heart?”
“He’s so dreamy!” swooned a third filly.
One of the guards rushed to the princess’s side. “Should we take you to the hospital, Your Highness?” asked the guard. As if to answer his question Flurry’s cheeks swelled and a huge amount of projectile vomit escaped from her mouth and splattered all over the guard. The guard jumped back in shock and disgust and the chambers echoed with a chorus of “Ewws!” from the foals present.

Princess Cadence and Shining Armor were at the Crystal Castle’s Royal Hall hosting the Mayor of Baltimare and his wife. The Mayor and his family were on an official visit to The Crystal Empire to negotiate the development of a coal facility that would help generate new jobs in the Empire and invite more cities to do business in the Crystal Empire. The only thing left to do was for officials from The Crystal Empire and Baltimare to sign an official agreement between the two cities. At the Royal Hall there was a gala in honor of the Baltimare mayor and his wife. As Princess Cadence and Shining Armor were engaged in conversation with the mayor and his wife, Cadence and Shining Armor suddenly felt pains in their stomachs that turned their jovial moods into pure agony. As the mayor and his wife approached to offer some assistance both Cadence and Shining Armor regurgitated all over the mayor and his wife in a hail of projectile vomit. The site of Shining Armor and Cadence committing such a disgusting act caused all those in attendance to stop in their tracks and react in both shock and disgust. Little did anyone know that earlier that day Valiant Heart had offered both Cadence and Shining Armor a box of quiche squares as a way of helping his parents get ready for a potentially stressful day in dealing with the visiting dignitaries.

At Sweetie Belle’s home Sweetie Belle and her husband Button Mash were entertaining First Insight, a writer for the entertainment magazine Equestria Entertainment Weekly. Being one of the best singers in Equestria Sweetie Belle knew all too well the importance of the entertainment press in terms of promoting oneself and giving the public insight on her personal life in order to relate to the common pony; insight with a few exceptions of course. The veteran female entertainment reporter First Insight, armed with a notepad containing questions and tape recorder had a reputation for being fair and impartial. Two traits that were seriously lacking when it came to entertainment news, especially when more emphasis was given to gossip rather than cold, hard facts. “So how do you balance the life of a top notch singer with family life?” asked First Insight.
“Well, as any wife and mother would tell you it’s not easy at all,” replied Sweetie Belle with a calm smile. “The way I spend time with my family is by inviting them to tour with me and bringing them into the studio. This is when Button isn’t busy and when Pixel doesn’t have school.”
“I see,” said First Insight. “You two have been married for…how long?”
“Twelve years,” replied Button Mash with a proud smile.
“Well, I guess most ponies would like to know how you managed to make it work so far. I mean, for most ponies in this business, marriage is bound to end as fast as it starts.”
“Well, there’s a mutual understanding and respect between us,” said Sweetie Belle. “Button Mash understands that singing is my passion and that’s going to take me away from the family for a while. Plus, he’s been very supportive ever since I told him this is what I wanted to do.”
“I understand you’ve known each other since elementary school and you started dating when you were in high school, is that right?” said First Insight.
“That’s right,” said Button Mash. “We didn’t exactly hit it off until she along with her friends started helping me find the true meaning of my cutiemark. Ever since then we’ve been inseparable.”
“Wow,” said Insight nodding with amazement. “Now, Sweetie Belle, you’ve recorded your first hit at age fourteen and you’ve enjoyed tremendous success since then. Two duets with Sapphire Shores and with Coloratura. By the way, Coloratura was your mentor, right?”
“Yes and she was a great mentor,” said Sweetie Belle with a smile. “She discovered me at a singing competition and with a little prodding by my sister Coloratura agreed to help me hone my skills.”
“Well, there another thing I want to touch on. You two are very different in the fact that not only are you unicorn and earth pony respectively, but you’re in music while your husband is a video game designer.”
“Like Sweetie said before, we respect each other’s differences and we’re supportive of each other’s passions,” said Button Mash.
“But don’t you feel somewhat overshadowed by your wife’s success?” asked First Insight.
“Do you really want the honest truth?” said Button Mash. “I’m a very private stallion and I much rather have Sweetie representing the family than being hounded by so many folks out there.”
“Alright,” said First Insight. “About your daughter, she’s about nine years old, right?”
“And she’s just as beautiful as her mom,” said Button proudly.
“Who do you think she mostly takes from? Is she more of a singer or a gamer?”
“Oh, she’s definitely a gamer,” said Sweetie Belle. “I’ll be the first to admit that. But she sings from time to time and has a great voice.”
Just then a soft groan was heard near the living room. Sweetie Belle, Button Mash and First Insight turned to the entrance of the living room to find Pixel Bit standing in the doorway holding onto her stomach. Her parents seemed to be unaware of her current predicament. “Oh there she is!” said Sweetie Belle smiling from ear to ear. “Come on up, honey.” Slowly the unicorn filly walked towards the couch and climbed onto the cushions seating herself between her parents. Button Mash took note of the queasy expression Pixel had on her face. “Come on, Pixel,” said Button. “Give the lady a smile.” Pixel Bit was in extreme pain in her bowels. Yet, she knew how important it was not to embarrass her mother. Slowly a weak smile formed across her face. “So, what’s it like having a famous singer for a mother, Pixel?” asked First Insight.
“It’s…okay,” said Pixel weakly with a forced smile.
““Okay”? There are a lot of kids who could only dream of having a mom like yours. I expected you to be all excited and whatnot.”
“Well, I feel like any regular kid, even with mom being a singer and all.”
Button Mash’s smile soon turned into a frown when he started to feel sharp pains in his stomach. He held onto his stomach and let out a pained groan. First Insight then took notice. “Are you alright?” she asked.
“I think I’m coming down with a little stomach ache,” Button moaned.
“Would you like to take a break?”
“No, no. Don’t worry about me.”
“So, Pixel I heard that you’re quite the gamer,” said First Insight.
“Yup, she’s beaten Button in two games already,” said Sweetie Belle.
“Is that so?” said First Insight. “So what’s your favorite game?”
Pixel grinded her teeth and went into a fetal position holding onto her stomach with both of her front hooves. “Um, you don’t look so good, dear” said First Insight with concern in her voice. Suddenly a loud rumble was heard from Sweetie Belle’s stomach. Sweetie held onto her stomach and let out a painful groan. “Pixel, what was in those quiche squares you gave us?” moaned Sweetie.
“Um, would you like me to stop the interview so that you all could go to a hospital or something?” inquired First Insight. Sweetie Belle and her family all let out pained groans. Their cheeks then swelled and they all retched vomiting a huge amount of projectile vomit onto First Insight. The entertainment reporter was now covered in bile and vomit and she let out a scream of despair.

Back at the Crystal Empire Captain of the Royal Guard Valiant Heart was busy inspecting members of the Crystal Empire’s Royal Guard. Earlier in the day he took a little time off from the barracks in his unicorn disguise. That afternoon was the inspection of the Royal Guards. Everything had to fit an exceptional standard in terms of dress code and posture. Nothing must be out of place. Valiant marched slowly between the platoons and companies of male and female guards. At his side was a female lieutenant helping him in his inspection. So far he could tell that the guards had their uniforms properly shined and worn to Royal Guard standard. As he marched he felt a sharp pain in his stomach which made him stop in his tracks. He then let out a groan and he held onto his stomach as it rumbled loudly. The female lieutenant took note of Valiant’s state and rushed to his side. “Are you alright, Captain?” said the lieutenant with concern.
“I’m alright, Lieutenant,” said Valiant. “Don’t worry. I’ll tough it out.” Valiant then straightened himself up and continued with his inspection. The lieutenant shadowed his movements with deep concern in her eyes. They arrived at a battalion of female guards and walked between the rows. Valiant looked into the eyes of the blank faces of female guards taking note of how much the females improved in their current presentation. The rumble of his stomach once again attacked stopping him in his tracks. He stopped right in front of a rather short female guard. She bore full witness to Valiant’s agonizing state without changing the blank expression on her face. The pain in Valiant’s stomach became too much for him to bear. His cheeks swelled and he turned to face the small mare. Suddenly projectile vomit escaped from his mouth and splattered in a huge quantity right on top of the mare. The female guard jumped back and let out a gasp. She inspected herself seeing all of her fur and her armor completely covered in vomit and bile. She then broke down and cried. The scene caused the other battalions to react in shock and disgust. For Valiant, what he had just done was the most embarrassing thing he had done other than being caught wearing Flurry Heart’s makeup.

Canterlot Castle, home of the two well known princesses of Equestria and a former home of Twilight Sparkle while she was personal student of Princess Celestia. This castle along with the rest of Canterlot bore witness to many famous events from the Changeling Invasion, to Tirek’s reign of terror, to the numerous times when the Grand Galloping Gala always seemed to end in disaster almost to the point of amusing. The Canterlot Castle was also where Twilight along with Princess Luna uncovered something truly shocking: Princess Celestia and Discord were dating. At first Twilight, Princess Luna, Cadence, Shining Armor and a significant portion of Equestria’s citizens were against Celestia and Discord’s blossoming romance. But The Princess of the Sun and the reformed Lord of Chaos were adamant in their love for each other. They both made it official when they eventually married. Surprisingly, among those who were in attendance was Twilight, Luna, Cadence and her family and the Elements of Harmony. It has been twenty years since Celestia and Discord were married. Twilight and her friends became more accepting of the couple’s union. However, there were still those among Equestria’s citizens that were opposed to having Discord as their prince. Not even the birth of Prince Illusion could win over that small crowd. But Celestia and Discord lived long enough not to be swayed by public opinion. Over the years Celestia’s personal quarters within the Canterlot Castle also became Discord’s quarters. It was renovated to suit Discord’s chaotic personality. This renovation was suggested to Celestia by Fluttershy given Fluttershy’s horrific experience of Discord physically fading away due to him trying to adapt to Fluttershy’s way of life. In true Discord form, the quarters of husband and wife contained halls that zigzagged, furniture stuck on the walls and ceilings and appliances that grew legs and ran about. It took quite some time for Celestia to adapt to Discord’s living standards, but like a good wife she was supportive.
On this day Princess Celestia and Discord were enjoying tea on the balcony. Discord had his tea served by a teapot with legs while Celestia was busy reading from a magazine. “Those quiche squares that Illusion brought for us were quite scrumptious, wouldn’t you agree, my dear?” chimed the Lord of Chaos.
“They were indeed,” said The Princess of the Sun. “Those quiche squares are a welcoming departure from cake. The Apples could sure bake. If I didn’t know any better, I would say they were baked by Pinkie Pie and her family.”
“Speaking of Pinkie Pie’s family, are you sure Cotton Candy wasn’t adopted?”
Celestia looked up from her magazine and glared at her husband. “Discord!” she scolded.
“Well, Cotton Candy doesn’t share her mother’s talent in baking,” said Discord throwing up his claw and paw defensively. “What am I to assume?”
Celestia shook her head and refocused on her magazine. “Where do you suggest we take our vacation for our 20th anniversary?” asked Celestia. “For once I would like for us to go to a place where we wouldn’t attract so much attention. There are some ponies that still aren’t keen on our marriage.”
“Oh, forget about them!” said Discord waving his paw dismissively. “As far as I’m concerned they could go to live on the moon if they don’t like their leadership.”
Celestia cringed “Too soon, Discord,” she said.
“Come on, that was a thousand years ago,” said Discord.
“That’s your sister-in-law you’re referring to. Besides, tyrants punish their subjects in that manner.”
“What does that make you?”
“Are you truly equating me with the likes of Tirek and Chrysalis? I mean, you’ve had an experience with one of them which was not so pleasant after you believed with all your heart that he was going to give you a position of power.”
Discord sighed. “Touché,” he said. “Well, as far as a getaway spot goes, we could always go to those tropical forests that are made famous by A.K. Yearling/Daring Do in her books.”
“The only thing worse than prying eyes is being ponynapped by a megalomaniac and his lackeys,” said Celestia.
“We could spend the weekend at one of those extravagant hotels in Manehattan. All we have to do is disguise ourselves as lowly commoners.”
With those words snapped his paw and immediately both husband and wife were transformed into earth ponies with Celestia as a mare and Discord as a stallion. Celestia did not even flinch. She simply kept her nose in her magazine. “As tempting as that may sound, I prefer to enjoy my anniversary somewhere different in my own form, thank you very much,” she said. Discord groaned in annoyance and snapped his paw once again enabling both he and Celestia to transform back into their true forms. Celestia eyes then widened when she spotted something in the magazine. “This is perfect!” she said smiling from ear to ear. Discord vanished into a flash of light and reappeared over her shoulder looking down into her magazine. “These private islands in the Ponsific Ocean are the go to spots for those seeking extravagance and privacy,” said Celestia. “Its remote location is especially ideal if we want to relive the memories of our first wedding night.” With those words Celestia gave Discord a seductive look.
“Ooohh, I like the sound of that,” purred Discord. “Then it is decided.” Discord snapped his paw and both he and Celestia were dressed in vacation clothing. Discord was dressed in a Hawaiian-type T-shirt, a straw hat and sunglasses while Celestia was dressed in a huge floppy hat with large sunglasses. “To the Ponsific!” declared Discord.
Suddenly the sound of grumbling escaped from the stomachs of both husband and wife. Celestia and Discord hunched over, held their stomachs and let out pained groans. “May we put our vacation preparations on hold for a while, Discord?” groaned Celestia.
“If our current stomach attacks are the reason for a change of plans, then I agree with you whole heartedly, my dear,” said Discord with agony on his face. Celestia and Discord held onto each other and disappeared in a flash of light. They both reappeared in the hall leading to the royal bathroom. When they both arrived they discovered a long line of royal guards, maids, chefs, butlers and musicians forming outside the bathroom. They all had looks of agony on their faces and they all held onto their stomachs while letting out pained groans. Amongst the crowd Celestia and Discord found their only son Illusion who was seventh in line to the bathroom door. Illusion too displayed a look of agony while holding onto his stomach groaning in pain. Both husband and wife trotted up to their son. “Illusion, what’s going on here?” asked Celestia.
“If you can’t tell by now, we all need to use the bathroom,” groaned Illusion. “But somepony has been hogging it up for the past hour!”
“Who?” asked Discord. The groans and moans of a female followed by loud splashing were heard from the bathroom. Celestia immediately recognized the voice. “Luna?” she called out. “What’s going on?”
“We seemed to have contracted a severe case of diarrhea!” shouted Luna with a pained grunt. “We suspect that it was due to those quiche squares that were offered to us by your son!” With those words Luna let out a loud grunt and the sound of flatulence followed. The wet contents then escaped from her other end into the toilet bowl. Celestia then gave Illusion a suspicious look. “Exactly how many of the castle staff ate from those quiche squares, Illusion?” she asked.
“Everyone except Philomena?” said Illusion with a sheepish smile.
“Luna, how long do you have in there?” whined Discord.
“Discord, there are thirty bathrooms in this castle,” grunted Luna with a hint of annoyance. “Go to them!”
Luna then slammed both of her hooves against the sides of the cubicle and grinded her teeth as loads of heavy, wet contents exited her rear end.
Celestia and her family looked around their surroundings with desperation and hopelessness. “Discord, if I try to teleport to one of the other bathrooms I might not make it before what I ate ends up on the floor,” Celestia said in agony.
“I wouldn’t recommend it either,” said Discord with a pained look.
“Don’t waste your time,” said Illusion. “I tried all the bathrooms and they’re all occupied!”
“You just had to teach him that duplicating spell did you, Discord?” said Celestia as she glared at her husband.
Celestia grinded her teeth and held onto her stomach even harder. Her stomach rumbled even louder and the pain became even more unbearable. It was as if the contents were fighting to get out of her digestive system. She could actually feel the contents passing from her stomach right to her anus. She squeezed her plot in a desperate effort to keep the contents locked in and to preserve her dignity in public. But the contents seem to increase in size and in number. Celestia’s face contorted into several expressions as the contents started to slightly seep through her anus in liquid form. It was very obvious that this was a battle she would not win. Celestia let out a sigh and she displayed the look of defeat. “Discord, Illusion, my dear subjects,” she began. “I’m sorry.” With that a gigantic load of feces escaped from Celestia’s anus right onto the floor. It gushed out like water and debris escaping from a broken dam. Those present including Discord and Illusion jumped back and beheld the horrific and disgusting scene. The unrelenting flow of feces kept gushing out of Celestia’s end while she bowed her head and closed her eyes with a blank expression on her face. “Mother!” exclaimed Illusion.

Api galloped from the back of Sugarcube Corner to the stall in horror and in desperation. What she had just smelled was more disgusting than the mess the pigs made at Sweet Apple Acres. A pastry that contained such a horrific smell could not possibly be good for eating. It would also not be good for Api’s business. “I’d better stop everyone from eating those quiche squares,” Api thought out loud. “There’s no telling what will happen if they eat them.” When Api arrived back at the market square what she beheld absolutely horrified her. Creatures of all species, of both genders and of all ages were vomiting projectile vomit left and right. Api recognized some of these creatures quite well because it was not too long when she sold them boxes of quiche squares. Api held her head and gave a look of despair. “I’m too late!” she whined. Suddenly a huge amount of projectile vomit rained down on top of Api from above at her left. She let out a yelp as he was covered in digested food. Before she could fully process what had just happened another amount of projectile vomit rained down from her right and drenched her from head to hoof. Suddenly huge amounts of vomit rained down on top of the earth filly from both her left and her right until she was completely drenched in bile. Her jaw slackened and she could barely see through the vomit that burned her eyes and her nostrils. She looked up to find two Pegasus mares hovering above her holding onto their stomachs and their mouths. She recognized these mares all too well. The first mare was Whirlwind, the cousin of Echo. Judging by Whirlwind’s agonized expression it was very obvious that Prism Bolt took Api’s advice and tried to patch things up with Whirlwind by offering her a box of the now rancid quiche squares. The second mare was the town mailmare Derpy Hooves. Derpy had visited Api’s stall requesting a box of quiche squares deciding to try something different to muffins. Both Whirlwind and Derpy slowly hovered past each other holding onto their stomachs and their mouths.
Api stood near her stall drenched in bile and shame. Her business was now bust which also meant no cutiemark. She was the second Apple responsible for Ponyville contracting food poisoning… again. The good feeling she had earlier had now vaporized. Her five hundred bits meant nothing anymore. Yet, she was not the one to bare all the blame. There was a certain Pegasus filly that she entrusted to ensure that the quiche squares remained fresh by keeping the refrigerator plugged on. A task that this certain Pegasus filly failed to fulfill. Api shook with rage with the realization that this Pegasus filly was responsible for killing a lucrative business. At the top of her lungs Api screamed “ECHO! ” But then Api paused when she remembered something else. “Her date!” she thought out loud.

Echo and Quickstep slowly trotted towards the secluded river that Quickstep invited Echo to. Quickstep went on about how his parents got him involved in sports and the many medals and trophies that were stockpiled in his home. Echo meanwhile was not quite paying attention to Qickstep’s prattling. She was too caught up in the colt’s mesmerizing blue eyes and golden mane which looked even better to the side. “Well, here we are,” said Quickstep as they arrived at the riverbank. Before the little ponies was the distant setting of Celestia’s sun. Echo was well aware of such a scene from reading all the romance books her cousin Whirlwind had. “It’s kinda romantic,” said Echo. She glanced over to Quickstep and realized that he was staring at her with a shocked expression. She quickly clasped her hoof over her mouth and her cheeks were flushed with crimson. “Did I say that out loud?” said Echo.
“Well, I agree with you,” said Quickstep. “It is romantic. That’s because this is where my parents went on their first date.” Echo’s heart was racing a hundred miles an hour when the word “Date” escaped Quickstep’s mouth. What really struck the filly was the revelation that his parents had their first date at this particular river. Maybe it was fate. Maybe Echo and Quickstep were meant to be together. Quickstep sat on the log next to the riverbank. He looked back at Echo who stood ten feet away. Echo looked back with wide eyes. Quickstep in return flashed a friendly smile. He was obviously beckoning her to sit with him. Slowly Echo trotted her way to the log and sat at Quickstep’s right. She looked away trying hard not to get locked into Quickstep’s eyes because she was certain that she would faint once she stared into those pale, baby blues. Quickstep meanwhile frowned and turned away feeling both embarrassed and awkward. He wanted to do something special for a filly who he thought was pretty and an awesome athlete. Now it seemed as if she was avoiding her. He looked at the river noticing Celestia’s sun reflecting on the water’s surface. He needed to get the conversation going before he got bored to death and say something to Echo he knew he would regret. “I heard you wanna be in the Equestria Games one day,” Quickstep said.
“What?” said Echo catching herself. “Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah! That would be great.”
“So what do you wanna do? Flying? Javelin throw? Gymnastics?”
“Well flying obviously. Gymnastics is cool, but I might fly by mistake if I do all those fancy flips and stuff. I really enjoy flying. It’s something my mom really pushed into because she wasn’t able to fly when she was my age. I wanna make her proud.” A pause then occurred between colt and filly. “You know, my friend Pixel Bit says you’ve dated a few times,” said Echo.
Quickstep seemed to be taken aback by Echo’s revelation. “Well, I wasn’t dating that much,” he said with a sheepish grin. “My mom thinks I’m too young to have a girlfriend. But there was this one girl who I met when I was nine who I really liked and my dad told me that I should go out with her.”
“Well, what happened?”
“She moved away to Manehattan. I didn’t think I would ever like another filly again. I mean, a lot of fillies always come after me, but this filly was somepony special.”
Echo felt a tinge of jealousy. Judging from Quickstep’s tone, she got the impression that he wasn’t quite over this filly. “Did you two…kiss?” Echo said hesitantly. Quickstep turned to Echo sharply with shock in his eyes. Sweat seemed to form on his forehead. His eyes darted all around. “Uh, no,” said Quickstep said with a nervous smile. “I not old enough for that.” Echo’s mood changed at Quickstep’s revelation. She felt confident to put Api’s advice to be bold in a relationship. “You know, my cousin Whirlwind had her first kiss when she was ten years old” said Echo batting her eyelashes. Quickstep looked sharply at Echo with absolute shock on his face. He scratched behind his head and a nervous grin flashed across his muzzle. “Wow!” he said. “Your cousin’s more awesome than I thought. But I really don’t think I could do it.”
“Oh, it wouldn’t be too rough,” Echo said seductively. “Just a little peck.”
“A peck?”
“I Pinkie promise,” said Echo making movements over her head and putting her hoof over her eye.
“Pinkie promise?” said Quickstep with confusion on his face.
“It’s a little something I learned from Mrs. Pinkie Pie.”
“I don’t know about this.”
“Maybe we should both close eyes. That might help.”
“Okay.”
Both filly and colt closed their eyes and pursed their lips. They moved closer and closer within inches of each other’s’ faces. Echo meanwhile felt her heart beating at rapid speed. She was finally going to get her first kiss from the colt she always dreamed of. The anticipation was killing her. Just wait until Api and Pixel heard about this. Echo and Quickstep’s lips were meters away from touching when suddenly Echo felt a sharp pain in her stomach. Her eyes shot open and she found Quickstep with his eyes still closed. The pain in her stomach meanwhile intensified. Something moved from her stomach and shot up through her throat. Bile filled up in her mouth causing her cheeks to swell wide. Then she vomited all over Quickstep’s face. Quickstep let out a yell and fell backwards. He beheld himself discovering vomit all over his mane, his face and his chest, plus it was sticking to his fur. He looked up at Echo who had her hooves clasped over her mouth with vomit dripping from her chin. Her eyes were wide with shock and remorse. The vomit was now beginning to burn Quickstep’s eyes. He then started sobbing loudly. Soon he turned around and ran away with his sobs echoing throughout the area. Echo ran after him. “No, wait!” pleaded Echo. “Come back! I’m sorry! I never barfed on a colt before!” Quickstep disappeared in a distance and Echo stopped running after him. She dropped on her haunches and bowed her head. She then let out a sad sigh.
***
Vomit and bile were splayed across the most recognized landmarks of Equestria. All over Ponyville’s iconic marketplace, all across the grand ball of The Crystal Castle, within Princess Flurry Heart’s quarters and of course Princess Twilight Sparkle’s Castle of Friendship. The big exception of course was the Canterlot Castle where a massive load of feces was unloaded by the Princess of the Sun. Newspapers had a field day with their headlines as a result of Princess Celestia’s blunder. “PRINCESS CELESTIA MAKES HUGE NUMBER 2 IN CANTERLOT CASTLE”, “PRINCESS OF THE SUN OR PRINCESS OF POOP?” “PRINCESS CELESTIA CAN RAISE THE SUN. CAN SHE RAISE FECES?” As it was with Applejack’s mishandling of muffins, great number of Ponyville’s citizens were hospitalized with food poisoning among them Starburst, Prism Bolt and Icy Storm. At Sugarcube Corner Cotton Candy was in the bathroom vomiting all of her stomach’s contents in the toilet bowl. She was in this position for nearly two hours. She made her last bout of vomiting and pressed down on the lever to flush the toilet. “Okay,” she said hoarsely. “I think that’s the last of it.” A rumble escaped her stomach followed by intense pain. “No it isn’t!” she said. Her cheeks swelled and she buried her head in the toilet bowl letting bile spew out of her mouth.
There was then a knock on the door. Poking her head in was Cotton Candy’s mother Pinkie Pie. “How’s it going there, hon?” said Pinkie in her usually hyper-energized mood apparently unaware of the gravity of her daughter’s situation.
“I think that’s end of it, Mom,” said Cotton Candy after a long pause.
“Well, if you’re well enough Anthea said she wanted you to meet her at the Carousel Boutique. It’s urgent!”
Cotton Candy’s eyes widened. With that sentence she knew that whenever Anthea said something was “urgent”, it was more than likely true. For the most part Anthea’s honesty rivaled that of Mrs. Applejack so there was no way that she would send Cotton Candy on a wild goose chase. Cotton sprung to her hooves and galloped onto the streets all the way to The Carousel Boutique. She ran for about five minutes when she stopped dead in her tracks after she felt a sharp pain in her stomach followed by a rumble. Her cheeks swelled and she looked around frantically for a good place to discharge the remnants of that rancid box of quiche squares. At her left she spotted a trash can that was overflowing with garbage. She ran over to the trash can, removed the lid and vomited all over the huge pile of garbage. She then wiped her mouth with her fore hoof. “Yup, running is definitely out of the question,” she said to herself. She continued onwards to The Carousel Boutique, this time trotting. She arrived about fifteen minutes later where she found four ambulance carriages. She looked on in horror as Rarity, Spike, Claire and Turquoise were carried out of the Boutique on stretchers. She moved past the orderlies and stepped into the main hall where she found Anthea displaying different poses while Photo Finish snapped away from her camera. Across the room was Nidra laying on the floor holding onto her stomach groaning in pain. Cotton Candy approached Anthea with confusion on her face. “Annie, what’s going on?” said Cotton Candy.
“I’m taking pictures for Photo Finish’s magazine,” said Anthea excitedly. All the air seemed to be sucked from Cotton Candy’s body. She was certain that Photo Finish rejected Anthea after making an epic fail earlier in the day. Was Cotton Candy hearing that right? “Wait, what?” said Cotton Candy cocking her head.
“Nidra barfed all over Photo Finish and couldn’t do the photo shoot anymore,” explained Anthea. “Photo Finish said she needed a replacement for Nidra as soon as possible. So she chose me!”
A broad smile appeared on Cotton Candy’s face. “Alright!” she exclaimed.
“It’s not fair,” said Nidra in a cracking voice. “I won!” She then bowed her head and wailed.
