Spearmint's First Friend

“Princess Twilight I came as soon as I could. So what’s wrong?” Luster Dawn curiously asked after entering Canterlot’s throne room.

“Well there’s a stallion who I want you to become friends with, in fact I want you to become friends with” Princess Twilight explained as she sat on her throne. “You see despite Principal Starlight, Vice Principal Sunburst and Counselor Trixie’s best efforts to get him to make a friend he has yet to make a single one, so I was hoping that you would at least try to be his first friend.”

“Um with all do respect Princess, why are you asking me? And not one of your friends? I mean I just started learning about friendship, yet you and your friends are pretty much masters of it” Luster Dawn replied.

“Luster Dawn, I understand what you’re trying to say but my faithful student, friendship isn’t something that can be mastered, it’s something that grows over time besides, it’s precisely because you’re learning about friendship that I want you to become this stallion’s friend” Princess Twilight explained.

“Oh um okay then...may I ask who this stallion is?” Luster Dawn questioned.

“His name is Spearmint, he’s a year younger than you, but *sigh* when he was younger he bullied was for his genetics” Princess Twilight replied as her expression dimmed.

“Th-that’s horrible...” Luster Dawn commented.

“Yes I know, even in this day and age it seems like there is still creatures that get picked on” Princess Twilight added.

“Um it might not be my place to ask this but why was Spearmint bullied?” Luster Dawn asked.

“Well let’s say part of him goes back way before Princess Celestia and Princess Luna ruled Equestria the Batponies were originally Vampiric until they evolved to just be herbivorous, however it seems that Spearmint is a genetic throwback to the original Batponies; along with him being an Alicorn of sorts” Princess Twilight explained.

“Huh? You mean that Spearmint only drinks blood? Also what do you mean an Alicorn of sorts?” Luster Dawn pressed.

“Well yes and no; It’s true that Spearmint does drink blood but he’s technically omnivorous because despite him having two frontal straw-like fangs the rest of his teeth are just like other ponies. So he’s able to consume regular food along with blood” Princess Twilight responded. “Fortunately I’ve had the blood banks send him blood bags a month as he only needs to feed on blood once a week.”

“Okay? But what about him being an Alicorn of sorts?” Luster Dawn questioned

“Well even he has a horn and magic like a normal unicorn does but he also has bat wings like a normal Batpony. Even though both his parents were royal guards” Twilight explained. “By the way, I’ve figured it might be easier for you to become friends with Spearmint if you lived under the same roof as him.”

“Wait, you want me to live with him?” Luster Dawn asked.

“Yes, both his parents have agreed to it as well as them having a spare bedroom you can use” Princess Twilight explained to her student. “So would you mind becoming his first friend?”

“...Yes, I’ll do whatever it takes to become Spearmint’s first friend!” Luster Dawn proclaimed as she shot a hoof into the air.

“Good, I know you’ll be a good friend to Spearmint, oh and I’ve prepared transportation for you. It’s waiting by the hot air balloon pad” Princess Twilight commented as she tried to stifle a chuckle.

“Okay thank you Princess, I won’t let you down!” Luster Dawn replied before jogging towards the exit.

“Don’t worry my faithful student, I know you’ll be able to get the job done” Princess Twilight thought as she watched her student leave the room before Gallus closed the door.

Once Luster Dawn was finished packing and saying good bye to her family she hurried to where Canterlot’s hot air balloon platform was to find a golden chariot with two white royal guard Pegasi at the front waiting for her.

“Phew, sorry I’m late” Luster Dawn apologized before setting her luggage into the chariot.

“Um...you’re actually a few minutes early...” The first guard spoke up after the two guards exchanged glances.

“Oh well at least you can get this done sooner” Luster Dawn replied as she entered the chariot.

“She’s got a point” The second guard added.

“In that case let’s get going” The first guard exclaimed before the two guards prepared to fly off with the chariot and it’s contents. “Oh and you might want to hang on tight, the sky can get a bit windy.”

“Okay” Luster Dawn replied as she hunkered down for the trip.

After a what seemed like an eternity and one barfing session letter the chariot had arrived in Ponyville where Luster Dawn and her Luggage were dropped off before the chariot was flown back to Canterlot.

“I’m finally here!” Luster Dawn groaned after shaking her head upon remembering that she has a job to do. “At least Princess Twilight gave me directions to Spearmint’s house”

After finding Spearmint’s house near the School of Friendship Luster Dust knocked on the front door to which a medium stone gray Batpony mare with amber eyes, a light mint-green colored mane that was done in a pony tail, along with a light mint-green tail and a mango shaped cutie-mark answered.

“Hello? Oh You must be Luster Dawn! I’m Mango Peel, Spearmint’s mother.” She introduced before stepping aside. “Please, come in.”

“Thank you Mrs Peel, so um where’s your husband?” Luster Dawn asked as she entered the house with her luggage behind her.

“Oh you can just call me Mango Peel and he’s at work right now. But anyway let me g show you were your room is” Mango Peel volunteered after shutting the front door. “I’m sorry you had to come all the way out here though.”

“Oh it’s no problem, Princess Twilight already explained everything. So don’t worry because I’m gonna become your son’s first friend!” Luster Dawn proclaimed as she followed Mango Peel to the spare bedroom.

“Thank you so much Luster Dawn, Spearmint has never had a friend before” Mango Peel replied as the two neared the spare bedroom. “Seriously though, you don’t know how much this means to me.”

“Oh uh it’s nothing really, in fact I’m happy to become Spearmint’s first friend!” Luster Dawn said before the two reached the spare bedroom. “By the way where is Spearmint?”

“He’s currently at school right now, he won’t be back for another hour” Mango Peel replied before opening the door to the spare bedroom. “This is the spare bedroom, so feel free to make yourself at home!”

“Okay! Thank you Mrs Pe-er Mango Peel!” Luster Dawn exclaimed before Mango Peel nodded and trotted into the living room.

“Oh and don’t be surprised when you see blood bags in the fridge, I’m sure Princess Twilight already explained to you why we have them” Mango Peel called from the other room.

“Don’t worry I won’t be, Princess Twilight already explained to me about Spearmint’s genetic condition!” Luster Dawn replied.

“Okay then, if you have any questions or need anything then just ask” Mango Peel exclaimed as Luster Dawn brought her luggage into the spare bedroom.

“Thank you, oh and um where’s Spearmint’s room?” Luster Dawn asked out of curiosity as she entered the living room.

“Oh well when we moved into this house Spearmint chose the basement as his bedroom claiming that ‘if I were to ever wanted to attack a creature then it would be best if you locked the door in the basement with me in it until I can be eliminated...’ I believe that’s what he said” Mango Peel explained as her expression dimmed a bit. “Still...that colt would never hurt a fly, so why would he think that he would attack creatures?”

“This is just a thought but maybe he was called a ‘freak’ and a ‘monster’ so many times that he probably thinks of himself as one...” Luster Dawn proposed before spying a picture of a sand green colt that has a mint-green with spearmint highlights mane, tail along with him having apricot eyes, bright green freckles, a unicorn horn and bat wings along with tufted ears that’s hanging on the wall. “Um Mango Peel, is this Spearmint in the picture? He looks so happy in this”

“Yes, it was taken around the time that his throwback genes grew in...back then he was so happy despite no one wanting to be near him. But that was until his fangs came in when things really got worse as he was now the subject of rumors and bullying...” Mango Peel replied as tears threatened to fall.

Not knowing what else to do Luster Dawn just went up to Mango Peel and placed a hoof around her in an attempt to cheer her up. “Don’t worry because I’m defiantly going to be your son’s first true friend, this is no longer a mission given to me by the Princess but now it’s my personal mission!” Luster Dawn Proclaimed.

“Th-th-thank you so much Luster Dawn!” Mango Peel responded as Luster Dawn comforted her.

“I’s the least I can do” Luster Dawn replied along with a soft smile.

Once Mango Peel was sufficiently comforted she was given a tissue by Luster Dawn so she could wipe away the tears.

“Th-thanks again Luster Dawn” Mango Peel said as she grabbed the tissue.

“Of course” Luster Dawn replied along with a smile.
