The Next Six Dozen
Chapter 3
Previous ChapterNext Chapter“I’m coming, I’m coming, wait for me!” Cried a feminine voice that echoed down the crystal halls of Twilight’s castle.
Twilight herself rolled her eyes and tapped her hoof on the reflective floor. “Your right on time Fluttershy. There is no need to rush.”
Celestia chuckled, and merely watched as the pegasus careened around a corner and nearly tripped over an end table. “Be careful dear, we don't want to have to take a pit stop at the hospital now.”
“S-sorry.” Fluttershy hastily replied, the gangly girl grabbing hold of her flailing limbs and trotting slowly the rest of the way to her destination.
Which was at the center of the large crystalline array of magic, Twilight having brought with them a small set of saddle bags that rested across her back. “Ready?” Twilight asked, as the pegasus hastily situated herself on the other side of Celestia.
“R-ready.” Fluttershy replied.
The unicorn’s gaze lingered on the shy pony for several seconds before she turned her attention to Celestia. “Ready princess?” She asked.
“When you are, Twilight.” Celestia calmly answered.
Twilight lit her horn, and sent out a beam of magic, one that connected to the four tall pillars that surrounded them. The crystalline pillars seemed as if they were natural, and ended with a prism shaped crystal. When the unicorn’s magical energy hit said prisms, the three ponies were surrounded in a circulating wall of magic that was all the colors of the rainbow.
Remembering the words of caution both Celestia and Twilight spoke of before, Fluttershy straightened her back and mimicked the posture of her companions. All around her, the magic continued to grow brighter, wider, and the light hum of power was now loud enough to drown out even the thundering beat of the pegasus’ heart. Fluttershy wasn't a fan of magic, it was strange, unknown, and was utterly foriegn to the shy mare. Who had spent a good majority of her life having never even seen someone cast anything more complicated than a telekinesis spell.
Noticing this, Celestia turned her gaze to the mare, careful to not actually move her head in the process, but still directing her attention towards her partner. Fluttershy couldn't help but look up into those pale magenta eyes and be soothed by the calm she beheld. With her worries under control, Fluttershy forced her gaze forward, and her body to remain stock still while the magic continued to build.
And build it did, until finally it obscured everything, and in a flash, the crystal castle was gone, and the much more normal, marble interior of Canterlot castle surrounded them. They appeared in a wide open room that was considerably different than the one they had just come from. Though the tall stacks of crystal adorned with prisms were the same, this room was much larger, and had a ton of natural light. In addition it also had about a dozen ponies all standing around in it, some were guards, who relaxed upon seeing who had appeared. Others were technicians, or magicians, who monitored the equipment, and took notes, but otherwise seemed too busy to even give the trio anything more than a passing glance.
Which was fine, as Celestia had eyes for only one pony in particular, namely her assistant, Raven Quill. “Princess, I’m so glad your here, the opening ceremony is-'' Blurted the pony, only to be stopped by a withering glare form the alicorn.
“Is in half an hour, plenty of time to get there by carriage.” Celestia finished. “Furthermore, Twilight has offered to assist you in any manner required, and will be taking over all last minute preparations that were previously up to me to ensure were complete.”
The aforementioned purple unicorn took a step forward and cleared her throat. “I’ve taken the liberties of compiling a list of necessary things we need to check before the event can begin.”
The bone white furred, and stark black maned unicorn secretary breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh thank goodness, this will be far easier with you around.” Raven remarked.
“Let us start with the method of transportation. How will we be getting to the venue, and does this vehicle have adequate comfort for the princess?” Twilight pressed, trotting forward, the secretary and guards following in her wake.
The two other ponies trotted behind them, almost completely forgotten by everyone, and thus left to their own devices. “It was so nice of Twilight to offer to help. Though it seems like we’ve been left behind.” Fluttershy murmured.
Celestia chuckled, and pointed towards the guard to the right, who gazed back at them every few seconds. “Bright Spear knows what he's doing, and knows that I like a little space.”
“I see.” Fluttershy frowned, as the mass of ponies trotted out the room, and down the hall.
Celestia extended a wing and gently placed it upon the pegasus’ back, grabbing her attention, and making her gasp. “What is wrong my dear?” Celestia inquired, leaning down and looking the mare in the eye.
“It's just, I feel a little useless when compared to Twilight is all.” Fluttershy sighed. “I know it's silly but I can't help it.”
“Believe it or not I know exactly how you feel.” Celestia replied.
“R-really? But your princess Celestia, how do you know what that feels like?” Fluttershy blurted out.
“I wasn't always princess Celestia you know, at one point I was just Celestia.” The alicorn replied with a wink, retracting her wing. “Back then I was just that pony who was the stronger of the sisters, but didn't seem to have any skills other than lifting things.”
“No way.” Fluttershy whispered, aghast.
“It's quite true I’m afraid.” Celestia murmured as they turned a corner and began to trot down a lengthy section of stairs towards the entrance of the castle. “My sister was always the first of us to master anything from magic to painting, how to write, how to build, how to carve. Whatever I learned how to do, she was better, and in the end all I felt I had was my strength.”
“Then what happened?”
“I realized that though my sister’s skills were noticeable, and flashy, they aren't always the most important.” Celestia answered. “Once, when we were very young, my sister and I sought out a lost child, who had wandered into the woods. In the end we were able to rescue the foal from the jaws of a wolf, but the poor dear had lost a hoof in the scuffle.”
“Did she survive?” Fluttershy pressed, hardly even noticing their surroundings as they neared a large carriage and a small group of guards.
“She did, and ended up passing at the ripe old age of ninety three.” Celestia replied, only to shake her head. “That is not the point of the story though, as it was my sister’s talent with a blade that was able to save the foal, and yet her mother was inconsolable. She feared for her daughter’s life, and we feared for her heart, for she was older then most parents.”
“And? Then what happened?”
“Luna tried to speak to her, to calm the elderly mare lest her heart fail on her, yet she couldn't do it. When I tried, I assumed I would fail, but found that the words sprang easily to my lips, and over time I was able to calm the distraught mare.” Celestia concluded. “The ability to speak from your heart is a skill all its own, and though it's not quite as flashy as most abilities, it is undeniably a useful one.”
Fluttershy pursed her lips and stared off into space as they all piled into the carriage, which groaned under Celestia’s weight, the supports threatening to give for a moment. Only once they were all inside, and had begun to set off in the direction of Celestia’s event, did Fluttershy speak, but only after hugging the pregnant alicorn tightly. “Thank you, that was a wonderful story.” She whispered.
“What story?” Twilight asked, looking up from her notepad.
“It's nothing Twilight. Fluttershy here just needed a pick me up is all.” Celestia replied while nuzzling the pegasus and hugging her right back.
Twilight nodded, and went back to her checklist, her quill flashing this way and that as she mumbled to herself.
“Feel better?” Celestia whispered.
Fluttershy reluctantly let go of the mare and nodded meekly. “Thanks, I promise I wont say I’m useless ever again.”
“Good, because we are about to get moving, and there is nothing quite as luxurious as a carriage ride through the city.” Celestia replied, the mare shifting slightly on the enormous bench that had no doubt been custom made just for her.
For a moment, they didn't move, and Twilight looked up from her notes, ready to get to the bottom of things, only for a pair of far burlier guards to trot by and hook themselves up to the front of the carriage. Making Celestia chuckle and shake her head as the carriage began to trundle along, leaving two blushing stallion’s to stand off to the side and slowly discard all the carriage gear they had on.
“Oh my, it seems as though I’ve put on more weight than I thought.” Celestia remarked, her cheeks turning red.
“It just means there is more of you to love.” Fluttershy replied with a smile.
“Everyday you only become more beautiful.” Twilight added with a smile of her own.
Celestia giggled. “Thank you girls. I feel slightly less like a cow, now.”
“Why do you say that? Cows are nice.” Fluttershy asked in a slightly defeated tone.
The alicorn’s eyes went wide. “That's not what I meant, you see Fluttershy I-”
“Gotcha.” Fluttershy interrupted, the mare already giggling.
“You’ve been spending too much time with Pinkie Pie these past few days.” Twilight added, the unicorn giggling as well.
“Pinkie Pie always says a well timed joke is the best ice breaker.” Fluttershy frowned. “Did I do it right?”
“You did wonderfully dear.” Celestia replied, planting a small kiss on the pegasus’ cheek.
“Oh, that's just wonderful. I was so nervous.” Fluttershy admitted.
“Let's just enjoy the view, shall we?” Twilight exclaimed, while pulling open the drapes, and revealing the many towers, spires and sprawling villas that could be seen just outside the window.
“I don't think we’ve ever given young Fluttershy the official tour of Canterlot, have we Twilight?” Celestia asked.
The unicorn shook her head. “We have not.”
“You are in for a treat my dear.” Celestia whispered, before shifting her body slightly, allowing her to point out the window easier. “Those three towers right over there are called the triplets, as they were made by a trio of sisters who went on to become amazing enchanters. Their grandfather was the pony who designed the enchantments that help keep the city stable.”
“Woah.” Fluttershy whispered, the mare leaning on Celestia’s backside as she stared out the window. “And what about that really big square building?”
Celestia stuck her tongue out in disgust. “That's one of the last remnants of this terrible architectural style called brutalism, but there is actually a very funny story about that building. You see one hundred and eighty nine years ago-”
“And that's how this villa became Miss Golden Hearth’s school for underprivileged youngsters.” Celestia concluded, the carriage coming to a stop outside of the aforementioned school.
“So there is a school here, an orphanage, a public garden, and a soup kitchen?” Fluttershy asked.
“Oh yes.” Celestia replied. “Miss Golden was quite generous after her wife passed. From then on she chose to devote every last bit of her name to the betterment of Canterlot and its ponies”
“What a mare.” Fluttershy whispered in awe.
Twilight opened the door to the carriage and stepped out. “If you two are done talking history, I believe we have a grand opening to get to.”
“Yes mooom.” Celestia drolled.
Fluttershy giggled along with the princess. “Nice one Celestia.”
The alicorn flashed her lover a wink as she stood up before turning and stepping out of the carriage, trotting past a grumbling Twilight. “That doesn't even make sense, plus your the one pregnant with like six foals.”
“Liven up Twilight. As a good friend of mine likes to say; ``Where's the fun in making sense?” Celestia replied.
Fluttershy trotted down after the mare a second later and flashing Twilight a wide smile. “She does have a point Twilight, this is only a short opening ceremony. I’m sure we’ll be back at the castle in no time.”
“One can hope.” Celestia added. “I can't wait to partake in Pinkie Pie’s donuts. Say, you would either of you two mind grabbing some from Ponyville if we have the time?”
“Can't you wait until Pinkie Pie gets here? Its only two and a half hours until her lunch break.” Twilight retorted.
“I wouldn't mind.” Volunteered Fluttershy, earning her a brief glare from Twilight.
“Thank you dear, but I wasn't serious… Well not very serious anyway.” Celestia replied. “Now where are we going again?”
Twilight shook her head and trotted to the front of the group. “We are going to the central building, which is the one directly in front of us. Once inside we will proceed into the main courtyard, where there is a small stage already set up for you.”
“Ahh yes, thank you Twilight.” Celestia remarked before turning to the guards waiting patiently before them.
Fluttershy was about to follow them before she caught a glimpse of the guards who had been hooked up to the carriage. The two beefy earth pony’s lay panting on the ground, chests heaving, as they occasionally chugged a mouthful of water. “I’m so sorry.” Whispered the mare.
The closest earth pony waved it off, and seemed about to say something before he shrugged and continued to pound back more water. Turning back around, Fluttershy had to stop and stare as she realized just how big the ‘little villa’ Celestia had first pointed out twenty minutes ago, truly was.
An enormous mansion was set slightly left of center, and though it appeared to be quite old, it had also received extensive modifications. Attached to it via a long hall was the central building which was where the school was located, and behind all that was where she knew the garden was. Shaking her head, Fluttershy hastened her step, quickly catching up to the unicorn and alicorn just as they were beginning to ascend the first major flight of stairs.
As they walked, Fluttershy couldn't help but notice that Celestia seemed… off in a way that she couldn't quite put her hoof on. The alicorn still carried herself with that same confidence that she always did, but she also occasionally reached down to touch her stomach, as if checking if it was still there. Fluttershy made a note to ask the elder mare about it at a later date, as a small crowd of ponies lingered near the entrance and she figured that this wasn't the right time for such a conversation.
After scampering up to the alicorn and all but plastering herself against Celestia’s side, Fluttershy breathed a sigh of relief, as did Celestia herself, who felt a little calmer now that Fluttershy was so close. Even more of a relief was the way that Twilight strode ahead, taking charge of the event manager and handling everything without the pregnant mare having to say a single word. Security was handled in a flash, and shortly after that the group was moving once more, this time flanked by both their own guards, and the newly formed campus security.
Sure Celestia had little doubt that she could handle any issues that came up, but even an alicorn couldn't be everywhere. Nevermind the fact that she had several very special ponies whom she couldn't bear to see hurt.
As the group strode through the front doors, and into the school, Celestia took note of the construction, noticing all the ways that the builder had incorporated the original structure. It was pleasant to see history given such respect, and it captivated the alicorn’s attention all the way until they entered the courtyard. Then she stopped and noticed Twilight was arguing with the security chief.
“I was told there would be a space for us to get through.” Twilight hissed, glaring at the campus security manager.
“There was. I guess more ponies showed up then they thought. Can't most of your entourage just fly over?” Replied the portly, middle aged stallion with a shrug.
“Yes, but that's not the point. When you commit to something, you must ensure that you can meet that commitment. Besides, if you haven't noticed, her majesty is going to find flight rather difficult.” Twilight pointed out, gesturing back to the mare in question.
Who sighed, and trotted forward. “Although it is not ideal, the speech is supposed to start in mere moments, we do not have time to clear a path through the crowd. I can still fly, so let's just do that.”
“Fine, but I think this is a bad idea, and your boss will be getting an earful the very moment this speaking engagement is over.” Twilight conceded before turning to the stallion and jabbing a hoof into his chest.
“Yeah whatever, let's just get this started already.” Replied the male.
“I will meet you two on stage.” Celestia announced, before turning to the crowd which filled the small courtyard.
“Wait.” Fluttershy interrupted before pointing down. “What about your umm… You know.”
“It's been handled, invisible undergarments.” Twilight replied.
“Oh good, I didn't want you to well…” Fluttershy murmured, a blush crossing her face.
Celestia smiled faintly. “I appreciate the worry, dear Fluttershy but there is no need. Now, I have a speech to give.”
With that, the alicorn spread her wings, and took a small leap in the air, her large wings beating hard in order to keep her and her unborn passengers airborne. Though difficult, it wasn't impossible, and she managed to quickly ascend to a decent height before soaring over the gathered crowd of ponies and landing on the small stage across the lawn. After landing, the alicorn donned the same gentle smile she always wore before addressing her subjects, and took a step closer to the front of the stage.
Only to stop, and hesitate for a moment when she noticed the stares she was getting. Some were lecherous, some appalled, some angry, while the vast majority just seemed confused and put off for some reason. Looking around for the pony who was supposed to introduce her, she found the mare standing off to the side, her jaw hanging open and her clipboard having just clattered to the ground.
Noticing that she wasn't about to be getting the welcome she anticipated, Celestia chose to improvise just as Twilight joined her on stage, and Fluttershy took position just off to the side, behind a curtain. “Welcome Everypony, to Golden Hearth’s school for underprivileged youngsters.” Celestia announced. “Though that's certainly not the name choice I would have gone with as it may lead to some ponies out there believing its students have super powers.”
Upon receiving not even the polite laugh that most of her pop culture references earned her, Celestia stifled the urge to frown, and instead smiled a little wider. “I thank you for joining me in celebrating the opening of an absolutely wonderful establishment. Truly, the mind is a terrible thing to waste, and until now I feared there were children out there who may have gone without a proper schooling. Thankfully the Golden Hearth estate was able to step up and offer the necessary funds to get things started, while the crown was able to ensure no cuts were needed.”
She paused for a moment, and smiled, silently expecting some sort of positive response, only to get little more than whispering, and the few odd looks. The reporters and other journalists at the front, who had up until now been silent and unmoving, suddenly came alive. Pictures were snapped, pens began to move at furious paces and already hooves began to rise into the air, signalling that questions were ready to be asked.
“I will get to questions in a moment, as first I just wanted to thank Stone Hearth who was the pony who put this plan together in the first place. His dream was inspiring, and I am honored to both see it reach fruition, and have a hoof in enabling it to do so.” Celestia exclaimed excitedly. “Golden Hearth would have been proud to see what has been done in her name and I have no doubt that she would have approved of all of this.”
Pausing once more, Celestia hoped that the initial shocking revelation of her pregnancy had blown over by then, and they could focus on why she was here. Only for no one in the audience to seem interested in what she had to say, as every single reporter now had their hoof in their air. The scene made Celestia’s heart sink, as the opening of this most recent school was something she truly cared about.
With a small, almost imperceptible sigh, she abandoned several paragraphs of her speech and decided to go straight to the end. “With all that being said, I once again thank you for coming out for this momentous occasion and invite you to stick around and take a guided tour from the staff. Now if there were any questions about this amazing school or its staff I would open the floor to you, the public.”
Twilight grimaced and glanced nervously at Fluttershy, who shook her head and made a series of panicked motions with her hooves. Caught between what her friend, and her mentor wanted, Twilight chose to do nothing, and simply stand there as the barrage of questions came.
“Yes, you.” Celestia exclaimed, pointing to a seemingly random journalist near the front.
“Who’s the father?” He yelled.
The alicorn stifled a frown, only barely able to keep up her usually implacable demeanor. “I am not a member of the staff, nor is that question related to the school.” Celestia replied simply before pointing to another pony with his hoof in the air. “Go ahead.”
“How far along are you and how were you able to keep this pregnancy secret from the public?” He yelled.
This time Celestia could not resist breaking her facade of calm. “What part of what I just said was so hard to understand?”
“Apologies princess but you must admit this is far bigger news than a mere school.” Replied the male.
“This is not just any school, and I will not answer any question on that subject. A full statement will be given soon, so I expect you to stay on topic.” Celestia shot back, the alicorn standing tall once more and straightening her back. “Now then, are there any questions I may answer about the school, or do you all wish to make me repeat myself a third time?”
The good majority of the hooves that had been in the air fell, though there were still two that remained raised. Sighing to herself, Celestia turned to one of the few who still had a question, not noticing that both Twilight and Fluttershy breathed a sigh of relief when she did. “You there, did you have a question about this school?”
The mare nodded and took out a small notebook and pen. “Yes, I was wondering what the split of funds was between the crown and the estate as there have been reports that the legendary Golden Hearth fortune has finally been spent.”
Celestia smiled. “I cannot speak on the status of the late Golden Hearth’s fortune, but I can say that the crown’s own involvement was relatively minimal. Only twenty or so percent of the total cost. I cannot quote exact amounts, but that was around the number last I-”
“Harlot!” Shouted a voice.
“Pardon?” Celestia replied, aghast.
“You heard me.” Declared a white furred, and golden maned mare who strode to the front of the crowd. “You should be ashamed of yourself! To have a secret affair is one thing but to go out in public while in such a state is repugnant! You are a role model to ponies everywhere for crying out loud!”
Off to the side, Fluttershy looked strangely conflicted, drawn between a desire to rush out there and help the princess, while also visibly battling her own fear of crowds. Twilight seemed ready to explode at a moment’s notice, but restrained herself for now and watched Celestia closely, should she be needed. The alicorn herself was too shocked to say much of anything for several seconds, before donning her calm mask once more.
“There is a good explanation for my current situation, but to say that it's complicated would be an understatement. Once the situation has calmed down and I am able to gather my thoughts I will address the public.” Celestia explained, her confidence growing slowly as she spoke. “Until such time I’m afraid I cannot speak on the matter.”
“Like there would be a good explanation for getting knocked up out of wedlock.” Sneered the mare, journalists parting to allow her to come within feet of the stage. “Your the leader of our country, you shouldn't be acting like some sort of common whore that needs time to figure out who the father is.”
“That is not what happened.” Celestia replied weakly, taking a step back as the mare took a step forward. “It's complicated, I just need time to-”
“Time to what? Get another opportunity to fly over us and expose yourself like some sort of flasher?” Retorted the mare, her golden eyes narrowing. “You are just lucky there are no foals present to see your unmentionables.”
“I didn't think- the crowd was too-” Celestia stuttered, nearly tripping as she stumbled back.
“Excuses.” Spat the mare. “You are a princess, you could have easily asked us to make room, yet you decided to reveal yourself to everyone present.”
“She just wanted to stick to the schedule.” Twilight interrupted, prompting Fluttershy to pump her hoof in the air, glad to see the unicorn stand up for their mutual lover.
The mare sneered and threw up her nose. “Like I said, excuses. Ones that I, and the rest of the public do not care for.” With that said, the pony turned and stalked away, prompting a veritable storm of flashes and yelling.
“Princess, is it true you’ve taken multiple lovers?” One pony yelled.
Celestia raised a hoof to hide herself from the constant flash of cameras. “N-no I.” She stuttered, only to be cut off by another question.
“How long has this secret affair been happening, and can you confirm the identity of any of the potential fathers?” Another pony yelled.
“This isn't-” Celestia stuttered, tears cascading down her face.
To her right, Twilight was attempting to hold back the crowd, and shout over the sound of the cameras flashing and ponies yelling but was drowned out completely. Leaving Celestia strangely alone, seemingly cornered, and feeling guilty for something she had not regretted until that moment.
Then suddenly, she was gone in a flash of light, a solitary tear falling to the floor of the stage.
Upon noticing that the alicorn was suddenly gone, Twilight turned to Fluttershy, and jabbed a hoof in the direction of the carriage. Her command clear, and her stern gaze leaving no room for argument, Fluttershy obeyed, taking flight towards where they had arrived. With that out of the way, Twilight spun back to the crowd, her furious gaze cowing most of the ponies.
“You should be ashamed of yourselves!” She bellowed, her horn glowing brightly and spitting sparks across the stage.
The group of ponies took a collective back a step, some exchanging glances with one another while others simply stood there, stunned.
“This entire thing began because of a potential catastrophe on the scale of Tirek, but you ponies couldn't help yourself could you?” Twilight yelled, jabbing her hoof at the crowd.
“We just wanted answers-” One pony began, only to receive the full intensity of Twilight’s glare and cower back down.
“And she just wanted to announce the grand opening of something she was very proud to have a hoof in.” Twilight countered, before turning her attention from the cowering mare. “This entire situation was out of everyone’s control. Furthermore, you should show her the respect and trust that she deserves.”
The crowd grew silent, and though most ponies had the good sense to look guilty for having gotten caught in the moment there were a few that remained undeterred. “Its our job to ask questions. We have the right to know.”
“You have the right to know every detail of a mare’s private life? Really?” Twilight retorted. “She may be a public figure, and a prominent politician but that doesn't mean she is obligated to tell you every last detail about her life. Noone owes you that. Not even her.”
The reporter visibly shrunk.
Undeterred, Twilight glared at the crowd. “Lastly, she is our princess. She has guided Equestria for over a thousand years. Don't you think she should have earned a little trust after all this time?”
A scattering of murmured affirmations could be heard throughout the crowd.
“Next time you want to bully an innocent pony because you feel entitled to know everything about her personal life, look yourself in the mirror and start by asking yourself if that's the kind of pony you want to be.” Twilight’s frown vanished, and she straightened her back, a neutral expression crossing her face. “Refreshments will be served in the greeting hall, that is all.”
Without waiting for anyone to say anything, Twilight disappeared in a flash of light, appearing next to the carriage they had arrived in.
Where a terrified Fluttershy stood nervously chewing on her hoof. “Oh thank goodness your here Twilight.”
“Is she here?” Twilight asked.
Fluttershy shook her head. ‘N-no, and none of the guards have seen her either.”
Twilight turned to the nearest guard. “Gather everyone we arrived with and return to the castle, we will meet you there.”
The male nodded, and began to fulfill the unicorn’s command dutifully.
Turning back to the scared pegasus, Twilight took a step forward and placed a hoof on her shoulder. “She’s probably back at the castle, do you mind if I teleport us there?”
“Did you tell them off Twilight?” Fluttershy asked suddenly.
The unicorn blinked, only now noticing the way her friend's hoof shook with barely contained rage. Temporarily taken aback by this, Twilight found herself looking at her friend in a different light. “I did.” Twilight muttered.
“Good.” Fluttershy declared with a nod. “I’m ready when you are.”
“Right, hold on, this is further than usual.” Twilight muttered.
“I can handle it.”
Twilight nodded. “Good.”
Then, in a flash of purple light, they both vanished.
