The Next Six Dozen
Chapter 4
Previous ChapterNext ChapterFluttershy and Twilight appeared in a flash of light somewhere in Canterlot castle, disoriented and queasy. Fluttershy was hit worse, and had to cover her mouth as her breakfast threatened to come back up. Twilight had a little more experience when it came to teleportation and was able to stave off the urge to vomit after breathing deeply a few times. Shaking her head, Twilight looked around, and upon finding a window, walked over to it and looked out.
“We’re in the third story of the celestial wing, fairly close to where I was aiming.” Twilight remarked as she glanced up and down the hall and confirming they were alone.
Fluttershy nodded weakly. “You lead I’ll follow.”
Twilight grimaced, and did just that, turning right and making her way down to the end of the hall where she knew a staircase awaited her. Sure enough, her assumption was correct, and within three minutes the pair ascended several floors and were able to find Celestia’s room. Where two rather nervous looking guards stood, both of whom looked at Twilight with barely contained relief.
“Judging from your expressions she wasn't doing well when you saw her.” Twilight half asked, half stated.
The guards both nodded, with the taller one stepping forward slightly. “I saw her. She told us that no one was allowed in, even you two. We may have forgotten that last part though.”
Twilight smiled, and waved Fluttershy over. “Well then, we had better go before you remember it then. Come on Fluttershy.”
The pegasus gulped down the last of her nausea and followed close behind the unicorn. “R-right, lets go.” She whispered
The shorter guard pushed open the door, allowing the pair of ponies to trot quickly inside. Once through the portal, it was closed shut behind them, allowing them to better hear the quiet sobbing coming from the alicorn’s oversized bed.
“I thought I told you no one was allowed to come in.” Grumbled the voice from under a mound of pillows and blankets.
“Sorry princess. I guess they didn't hear that part.” Twilight replied as the dou trotted over to the bed and sat down on the edge.
A tear strewn and utterly disheveled face poked out from a pair of pillows, only to disappear a second later. “I don't want to be seen like this.” Whispered the alicorn.
Fluttershy placed a hoof on Twilight’s shoulder, stopping her before she spoke and allowing the pegasus to lean in and gently pull back the first layer of sheets. “What happened wasn't your fault princess. They don't know the whole story like we do and I’m sure that after you explain things they will take back all the nasty things they said.”
Celestia sniffed, covering her face with her forehooves. “It doesn't change the fact that I’m a role model for not only fillies, but most younger ponies. They are going to think that having foals out of wedlock is acceptable. I mean it is okay if you are in a committed relationship but they are going to take it as a tacit endorsement of teenage pregnancy!” Celestia cried, her voice growing increasingly hysterical. “It's going to be like the powdered wig craze of three hundred and seventy seven S.R all over again!”
“I’m sure it won't be that bad.” Fluttershy cautioned, the pegasus resting a hoof on the alicorn’s side.
“Fluttershy is right, the youth of today are for more educated- wait. You were indirectly responsible for that stupid wig craze?” Twilight asked.
Celestia sniffed heavily and slowly let her forehooves fall away, revealing her make up smeared face. “Y-yeah. I burnt off all the hair on my head during a freak spell casting accident and tried to hide it with a wig, but ponies thought it was a fashion statement. And now I’m going to cause a rash of ruined adolescent lives and unwanted pregnancies!” Celestia wailed, burying her face back in her hooves. “I’m going to have to invest more of the crown’s funds in orphanages, and then the government is going to go broke and we’ll have to disband the military and then were going to get invaded by yaks Twilight, yaks!”
The unicorn blinked. “I don't think yaks would invade us, don't they have an alliance with us? Furthermore-”
Fluttershy grabbed her friend by the shoulder and turned her around, forcing the unicorn to meet the pegasus’ glare. “Twilight. Celestia is not thinking logically, she has the hormonal imbalance of a pregnant mare times six.”
Twilight seemed ready to retort, only to wilt slightly. “R-right, sorry Fluttershy.” Twilight muttered.
“I’m not the one you should be apologizing to.” Fluttershy replied while motioning towards the still rambling alicorn.
“-and then we’ll all have to talk like yaks and I just can't do that.” Celestia continued to wail despondently, fresh tears cascading down her face. “I can hardly put up with it whenever prince Rutherford comes by and he's a delightful person.”
“Shh, it will be fine Celestia, none of that is going to happen.” Twilight whispered, placing her own hoof on the mare’s now exposed belly and slowly beginning to rub. “Were all going to be fine. This whole thing will blow over in no time.”
Celestia sniffed and dragged a hoof across her face, inadvertently smearing the rest of her make up across her cheek. “It w-will?”
“Absolutely.” Twilight replied softly. “Isn't that right Fluttershy?”
The pegasus nodded. “Uh huh. Why I bet this won't even be newsworthy.” The mare clamped both hooves over her mouth, and winced upon realizing what she had just said.
Within milliseconds fresh tears budded at the edge of Celestia’s eyes, causing Twilight to butt in as quickly as she could. “What Fluttershy means is that they are just going to report about the school and how great your speech was, and leave out the rest. Right Fluttershy?”
“Oh yes, it was a wonderful speech, absolutely enthralling.” Fluttershy added quickly, her forehooves going to Celestia’s belly and rubbing it vigorously, as if she were attempting to make up for her gaff through rubs alone.
Something that seemed to work for a few seconds before Celestia began to blubber and break down once more, sobbing into her hooves hard enough to make her entire body tremble.
“What's wrong?” Twilight pressed while frantically attempting to mimic Fluttershy and rub the mare’s belly as much as physically possible.
Celestia continued to sob for several more seconds before stopping just long enough to catch her breath. “Everyone is gonna see my giant fat body plastered all over the papers and everyone is going to hate me!” Celestia wailed.
Fluttershy sighed. “You are not fat Celestia, right Twilight.”
“Err right, your just pregnant.” Twilight added with a hesitant smile.
“That means they are still going to hate me!” Celestia cried before plunging her face into a pile of pillows and bawling her eyes out.
Both mortal ponies cringed and shared an awkward, and confused look, as if asking what they were supposed to do. After realizing that neither pony had any idea what they were supposed to do, they began to rub faster, an act that was growing less and less effective as time went on.
It was at this moment that the door to Celestia’s room was thrown open, revealing a grim faced Pinkie Pie who was carrying a load of donuts.
“Pinkie Pie, oh thank goodness your here!” Twilight exclaimed.
“You have to help us.” Fluttershy added, the pegasus fighting back tears of her own.
“I’m on it.” Pinkie Pie declared. “Twilight your on the other side, hold her close, no rubbing. Fluttershy, you do the same for this side, only slow and gentle movements now.”
The two ponies blinked, before reluctantly following the pink pony’s commands and laying on either side of the despondent alicorn. Whom didn't even seem to realize someone new had walked in until Pinkie Pie sat down on the bed next to her.
“Whos-” Was all Celestia managed to say before a double chocolate donut with vanilla sprinkles was shoved into her mouth.
After a moment of contemplation, the alicorn’s features suddenly softened and she slowly began to chew, her sobs growing softer as time went on. “What are you-” Twilight tried to ask, only to receive a harsh glare that made the unicorn’s mouth slam shut on reflex.
Turning away from the unicorn, Pinkie Pie smiled softly at the alicorn. “What kind would you like next?” She asked.
Celestia sniffed, seemed to think about it for a second, and then nodded. “Something with apple in it please.”
“Okay.” Pinkie replied before pulling forth an apple fritter and placing it in the alicorn’s open mouth.
Who chewed gleefully on the delicious pastry, uncaring to just how many crumbs got into her bed. Seeing that the alicorn seemed somewhat content with herself, Pinkie Pie pulled over the end table and placed the box of donuts within Celestia’s reach. “Feel free to have as many as you like. I made them special just for you.” Pinkie Pie whispered while giving the box a slight pat.
Celestia sniffed again and wiped her face with a pillow, the remnants of her makeup ending up all over said pillow. “O-okay.” She whispered after swallowing the last of the apple fritter she had been eating.
Pinkie Pie’s gaze lingered on the alicorn for a few seconds until she was certain the mare was as okay as she claimed. When she didn't break down in tears, Pinkie Pie slowly pulled the rest of her body onto the bed, and turned her gaze to the two other ponies in the room. The serious look coming from the normally upbeat party pony was enough to make both Twilight and Fluttershy stow whatever they had been about to say and instead listen to what Pinkie Pie was about to say.
“Sometimes a pony just needs you to be there, and not say anything.” She whispered.
Twilight seemed ready to offer a rebuttal, but instead the unicorn merely sighed. “Thank you Pinkie Pie. I guess we aren't as good at this as I thought.” Twilight murmured.
“Y-yeah, I am a crummy helper.” Fluttershy added before burying her face in Celestia’s side.
“Shhh it's okay.” Pinkie Pie whispered, the pony gently lifting her friend’s chin and forcing their eyes to meet. “I’m sure you did your absolute best, and that's what matters. You’ll get better, I know you will.”
“But I sucked at it.” Fluttershy stuttered, face still plastered against Celestia’s enormous belly.
“Sucking at something is just the first step at being sorta good at something. As a friend of mine likes to say.” Pinkie Pie replied with a wink.
Fluttershy chuckled, and sniffed. “Your right Pinkie.”
“Course I am. Now let's all just relax, and be there for her, okay?” Pinkie Pie pressed.
Fluttershy and Twilight both nodded.
Pinkie Pie smiled and crawled into bed, slipping under the covers and pressing her head into the crook of Celestia’s neck. Causing the alicorn to make soft, happy noises while eating her tenth donut.
As time passed, no one said anything, with the only sound being Celestia’s chewing, something that only ended when there were no more donuts left. When that happened, Celestia merely lay there for several tense moments before relaxing even more and wrapping her forelegs around Pinkie Pie and giving her a light squeeze.
“Thank you, all of you.” Celestia whispered while using her magic to clean her face as well as the pillows she may have inadvertently ruined.
“It was no problem at all. Isn't that right girls?” Pinkie Pie asked.
“We were happy to help.” Twilight replied.
“I’m glad your feeling better.” Fluttershy added with a smile.
“I’m glad to be better. I don't know what came over me.” Celestia murmured. “Though I am curious. Isn't it a little early for you to be on break Miss Pie?”
The pink pony shrugged. “Mrs cake let me move up my break since it was slow anyway. Besides, I had a feeling you’d need my help.”
“Wait, how did you use the teleporter?” Twilight asked.
Pinkie Pie smirked and tapped her nose. “Sorry Twilight, that's a secret.”
The unicorn seemed ready to retort once more, but reluctantly fell silent. “We’ll I suppose I’m just glad your Pinkie sense apparently includes emotional emergencies.” Twilight remarked.
“Nah, this was just an educated guess.” Pinkie Pie replied with a shrug.
“Huh, well then.” Twilight muttered to herself. “Good guess then I suppose.”
“I need to tell the public what happened.” Celestia whispered. “They deserve to know the truth.”
Twilight laid her chin on the alicorn’s shoulder, looking over her back and down at the mare. “Absolutely, after everypony knows what happened I’m sure they will understand.”
“I don't know.” Murmured Fluttershy, who reluctantly pulled her head from Celestia’s chest fluff. “It doesn't feel right to just come right out and say it while we are still dealing with the fallout.”
“Fluttershy is right.” Pinkie Pie added, sitting up and looking down at the alicorn. “We are too close to it right now. It will only make the rumours worse. Besides, you still need to follow your heart to where it wants to go.”
Celestia blinked, and looked up at the pink pony with a confused expression. “What do you mean?”
“Oh I think you know what I mean.” Pinkie replied cryptically.
Celestia pursed her lips and frowned. “I don't think I do. Regardless, I think I’ll back off for now, afterall I don't even know what I would say. I can't just go out there and say there was a big mix up, and tell the whole truth, ponies shouldn't know about that spell, or the weaknesses of the elements.”
“That would be quite a bad look.” Twilight conceded.
“Plus I don't know if I’m even strong enough to get up there and speak to them.” Celestia whispered. “Would they even believe me if I even did tell them the real reason? What would I even say? That it was all just a convoluted mistake?”
“The ponies of Equestria may be a flighty bunch but they are also kind, and understanding.” Pinkie Pie began, her hoof gently running down the alicorn’s cheek and neck. “If you wait, and explain things after we figure this out and you are strong enough to do so, they will understand. Everypony loves you Celestia, and one unfortunte event isn't going to change that.”
Celestia sighed heavily, and nodded slowly, the pony subconsciously leaning into Pinkie’s gentle hoof as it trailed down the alicorn’s face. “Your right again Pinkie Pie. Even if I could get up there and tell them everything that happened, I still haven't gained the right amount of perspective to really make sense of it all.”
Twilight’s brow creased, but the unicorn bit back her retort, no matter how much she wanted to let loose. Fluttershy on the other hoof, sighed, relief flooding through the pegasus.
“Do you need anything else?” Pinkie Pie offered. “I could get you some chocolate milk to wash down those donuts if you’d like.”
Celestia shook her head. “I’m fine Pinkie, but thank you anyway. I think what I really need is some time alone.”
“Are you sure princess?” Twilight interjected. “You were rather umm… despondent a minute ago.”
“It's passed now, Twilight. I’m fine.” Celestia replied confidently.
“Do you really want us to go?” Fluttershy asked, the pegasus clinging even tighter to Celestia’s chest, while looking up at the other mare.
Undeterred by Fluttershy’s doe eyes, Celestia sighed. “I’m afraid so my dear. I need time to think things over, alone.” The alicorn smiled faintly, and leaned down, planting a kiss on the top of Fluttershy’s head. “Fret not though. I will return to castle friendship for dinner this evening.”
“Okay.” Fluttershy murmured, the pegasus slowly slipping away.
Twilight followed her friend, and hopped off the bed before trotting over to the door, where Pinkie Pie already waited. “Don't forget were only a skip, jump, and a hop away.” Pinkie Pie exclaimed with a wide, warm smile.
“I won't.” Celestia vowed.
With that, Pinkie Pie turned, and ushered her friends out the door and down the hall.
Twilight paused once out of earshot of the guards, and turned, glancing at both of her companions. “Alright, what are we going to do now?”
“Meet up later for supper.” Fluttershy answered. “Right?”
Twilight rolled her eyes. “Well that too, but what else are we going to do? Celestia needs us now more than ever, we can't just wait and hope things fix themselves.”
“Twilight.” Pinkie Pie interrupted, the earth pony placing a gentle hoof on her friend’s shoulder. “Celestia is an adult. Even if she's super pregnant, she can handle this. We need to trust her, and give her the space she needs to wrap her head around this whole debacle.”
Twilight brushed off her friend’s hoof. “Your asking me to sit on my hooves while Celestia, princess of equestria needs me.” Hissed the mare.
“What she needs right now is time to think, alone.” Pinkie Pie countered. “Unless you think you know better then Celestia herself.”
Twilight recoiled as if slapped. “I didn't mean it like that.”
The party pony shook her head. “Just give her a few days, that's all and after that if she's still not out of this funk, then we can do something.” A soft smile crossed Pinkie’s lips. “Sometimes you have to let yourself be sad for a little bit before you can be happy again.”
The hallway was silent for several long seconds before Fluttershy suddenly piped up. “So what are we making for supper then?”
“It has to be good.” Twilight declared.
Pinkie Pie motioned towards the end of the hall, prompting her friends to all turn and begin the long trot back to the teleporter, and then, home. “Well Twilight, what is her favorite food? I got a pretty good idea on what deserts I should bring, but I’m not so sure about the main course.”
The unicorn pursed her lips, all trace of her formerly dour move evaporating in mere seconds. “Well her favorite food is cottage cheese perogies covered in sauteed onions and smothered in sour cream, but her favorite comfort food is cream of broccoli soup with cheese on top and buttered garlic toast on the side.”
“That sounds really good.” Fluttershy agreed.
“Maybe we could make both? Have the soup for an entree and the perogies for the main course?” Twilight inquired, turning to Pinkie Pie.
“I think that sounds like a super idea.” Pinkie declared.
“What are you going to bring for dessert?” Fluttershy asked slightly nervously. “Do you know if she likes carrot cake? It's the only thing I know how to bake…”
“If you bake it, I’m sure she’ll love it.” Pinkie Pie replied.
“I hope she likes it.” Fluttershy whispered. “I really want her to be happy.”
“We all do Fluttershy.” Twilight added with a soft smile. “We all do.”
