It's Been Waiting For You (Welcome To New York)

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

The third plane ride was no less daunting than the first or second, but Sunset managed to get through it without having any nightmares that involved her and all her friends dying.

It had actually been pretty painless. Just her and Twilight in first-class seating on their way to New York for their honeymoon. Twilight spent the entire time holding her hand and listening to audiobooks while Sunset dozed, occasionally waking up to stare out the window at the clouds passing by.

They landed and were soon catching a taxi to their hotel. Sunset had never ridden in a taxi before, so that was something. Small talk with strangers wasn’t really her thing, she learned. Twilight told her that she’d hate Uber.

Twilight got them checked in at the hotel while Sunset connected her phone to the wifi to text their friends and tell them they had landed safely.

Sunset: just landed in NYC and got to the hotel safely.

Pinkie: Yayyy!!! Have lots of fun for me!
RD: Ready to get it on? ;)
Applejack: Happy to hear you made it there okay. Have a nice vacation!
Fluttershy: Make sure to take lots of pictures!
Rarity: If you have the chance, visit an art museum for me and send pictures. I’m thinking of doing a new York inspired fall collection!

Sunset: will do girls!

Sunset smiled at her phone, then looked up to find Twilight standing in front of her, dragging her suitcase behind her and shouldering a backpack that was so full Sunset was surprised it had fit in the overhead compartment on the plane.

“We’re in room 418,” Twilight said, holding up the keycards. Sunset nodded.

“Shall I escort you, Princess?” Sunset held out her hand to her wife.

Twilight giggled curtsying to the best of her ability in her sweatpants.

“You shall, and stuff.” She laughed as she felt Sunset’s hand slip into hers. It was such a natural feeling to Twilight that she couldn’t fathom how there used to be a time that she wouldn’t have been able to marry the beautiful girl next to her that she was lucky enough to now call her wife.

They took the elevator up to their hotel room, walking down the hallway still hand in hand as Twilight unlocked their door and they dragged their stuff inside.

“Okay, checklist!” Twilight pulled out her phone, setting her suitcase down on the floor. Sunset raised an eyebrow at her but didn’t comment, getting used to the fact that Twilight seemed to have a checklist for every situation.

“Sunset, go turn your phone camera on in the bathroom with the lights out and look for hidden cameras. I’m going to check for bed bugs.” Sunset nodded, setting her bag down next to Twilight’s and going into the bathroom.

She actually hadn’t been surprised when Twilight had told her she had been diagnosed with OCD in middle school. Twilight had so many of the symptoms, a lot of things started to make sense. The way she always locked her locker twice in high school, how she hit her toothbrush on the sink exactly four times to get the water off of it after brushing her teeth. The lists and organization, it all started to fall together. Twilight had described it as suffocating. On top of the trauma she suffered from the Friendship Games incident, Twilight constantly had intrusive thoughts telling her that if she didn’t do something like brush her hair for exactly fifty strokes that her family would die.

It had taken years for twilight to finally trust Sunset enough to help her with her checklist each night. She had a routine that she followed, making sure the door was locked, the stove was off, toilet lid was closed, closet doors were shut, even making sure the fridge was still plugged in, that after living together for almost three years she could finally let Sunset do parts of that checklist for her, just to take some of the stress off.

This was no different, and as Sunset flicked out the bathroom lights and scanned headphones camera all over the room, listening to the sounds of Twilight removing all the blankets from the bed and the covers from the pillows and lifting the mattress to check for bugs, Sunset was thankful that they had these routines. In some way, it made her feel closer to Twilight.

“All clear?” she asked as she came out of the bathroom.

“Clear. You?”

“Clear.”

“Okay, the doors locked right?”

Sunset looked behind her, making sure the deadbolt was fastened and the lock was done.

“Locked up tight.” Twilight nodded, opening the closet and giving it a once over. She opened all the drawers in the hotel room, even flipping through the bible. Sunset had once heard that sometimes people would leave money in the bibles in hotel rooms, but she doubted that was what Twilight was looking for.

She locked the balcony door twice and shut the curtains.

“What’s the thermostat at?”

Sunset looked over at it on the wall.

“65 degrees.”

“It should be 68.” was all the command Sunset needed to turn it up three notches.

Twilight looked at Sunset and smiled before throwing herself down onto the bed. Sunset came over and sat down next to her.

“One bed, huh?” Sunset teased, playing with Twilight’s hair as it fell out of her messy bun and onto the pillow.

“Oh shut it,” Twilight giggled, lightly hitting Sunset’s thigh.

“You wanna do anything tonight? Go out somewhere?” Sunset asked. Twilight looked at her like she had just suggested they go run a marathon. “Come on! We’re in New York! You begged me to bring you here!” Twilight snorted.

“I planned the trip.”

“Well I’m paying for it, so therefore I brought you here.” Sunset smiled, looking very proud of herself. Twilight laughed, rolling over and burying her face into Sunset’s lap.

“It’s too late. I’m tired,” she groaned.

“It’s eight pm,” Sunset said smugly.

“Timezones Sunset, timezones.”

“California is behind us. It’s five pm there. You of all people should know that, Twi.”

Twilight groaned again, lighting hitting her arm against Sunset’s chest.

“Less talking, more napping. We can go do something tomorrow.”

Sunset giggled.

“Oh alright, but you need to change first.” She gently patted Twilight’s head.

Twilight groaned yet again, mumbling a quiet “Fine” as she rolled out of bed and dragged herself over to her suitcase. She came back in pajamas, curling up on the bed next to Sunset. Sunset reached over to turn out the light as she pulled up the covers and slid in next to her wife.

“Night. I love you,” she whispered.

“I love you too. Goodnight,” Twilight whispered back.

The following days were full of hustle and bustle as they explored New York City. They saw art galleries, they fed ducks in Central Park, they visited the Empire State Building, and took a ferry ride out to see the Statue of Liberty. They went sightseeing and visited too many shops, coming back with bags of stuff they would have to ship home.

On their last day there, Sunset surprised Twilight with tickets to see Hamilton on broadway.

“Hey Twily, I got you something.” Sunset held an envelope behind her back. They were in their hotel room and Twilight was sitting on the bed, tying her shoes. Twilight looked up.

“Really? I thought we were just buying souvenirs for our friends. Oh shit, I didn’t get you anything!” Twilight jumped up off the bed, a frantic look in her eye. Sunset laughed, grabbing her upper arm with one hand and slowly easing her back down.

“No, I bought this a long time ago. It’s a thank you for planning this trip. Here.” she held the envelope out to Twilight. She took it, carefully tearing into it and pulling out the two tickets inside.

She flipped one over, eyes scanning it and reading every word.

Her jaw dropped, and the next thing Sunset knew Twilight was hugging her like there was no tomorrow, envelope and tickets abandoned on the bed.

“Oh my God, you are the best wife ever!!! I love you so much! Thank you thank you thank you!!! How did you get tickets to a sold-out show?!” Sunset was then peppered with kisses from her wife. She didn’t think she had ever seen Twilight this excited.

“You’re welcome baby. And let’s just say I pulled some strings.” Sunset winked at and Twilight looked confused for a moment before she went back to being super excited. She grabbed the tickets and ran over them again.

“The show starts in two hours! We should go now!” Twilight had a wild smile on her face and Sunset laughed, letting her grab her purse and the tickets and drag her out of the hotel room.

To say Twilight enjoyed the musical was an understatement.

As they left the theatre, Twilight was crying and babbling on about how amazing it was. While Sunset wasn’t as big of a history nerd as Twilight was (what could she say, it wasn’t her history), she had liked the musical a lot too. It had catchy songs, she had to say, as a person who had only heard half the soundtrack once, she found herself with The Schuyler Sisters stuck in her head as they left.

The show had been at 3:00 pm, leaving them right on time to grab some dinner. They came back from The Cheesecake Factory with that least four different flavors of cheesecake to go.

“This was the best week ever,” Twilight gushed as she sat on the bed next to Sunset, working on a s’mores cheesecake.

“Why? Because you got to see Hamilton on Broadway?” Sunset joked.

“Well that, but mostly because I got to spend it with you.” She leaned over, resting her head on Sunset’s shoulder. Sunset responded by setting her red velvet cheesecake in her lap and using her free hand to wrap Twilight in a side hug.

“Just imagine how I feel, getting to spend every single day with a girl who’s ten times amazing than I could ever be.” She tangled her hand into Twilight’s ponytail, stroking her hair gently.

“You spoil me,” Twilight whispered.

“And I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Sunset moved slightly so that she could press a kiss to Twilight’s lips, pulling away with a touch of whipped cream on her bottom lip. Twilight laughed,

“Let me help you with that,” she said, pulling Sunset back in for another kiss.

Author's Note

I hope I did an okay job with my portrayal of Twilight's OCD! I asked a friend who has it and he said that it was good and accurate, so that's what I went with.
