After ending his service in the Royal Guard, Beryl works as a freelance operative for a Canterlot arcane anomaly research institute. No home life to return to, nothing tying him to any place, few wants from life, a rigorous work ethic and a sharp eye for detail. Most ponies barely make note of his existence, which is exactly how he likes it. All this makes him the best candidate to look into incidents best kept quiet.

Odd artifacts have begun surfacing in Ponyville Old Town's Restricted Area - the remnants of the once great and terrible Everfree Forest. Beryl is handed the task of investigating it, but the Old Town hotel he settles into offers a new, even greater anomaly: an extremely persistent, talkative, and altogether quite annoying new acquaintance.

A disturbance for his work? Definitely. A terrible neighbor to put up with on a daily basis? Certainly. An indecipherable oddball? You bet. Then again, these are the types you'd expect to find in the Old Town, which still styles itself after the Equestria of old. And why should he care about some nutty, washed up celebrity when nopony else seems to pay attention to her antics?
