The Meeting of Two Introverts

Load Full StoryNext Chapter

A new phase in my life had begun as I was starting college at the University of Canterlot. I decided to study finance since I have always been fascinated with the economy, how it works and the stock market overall. While I was excited, one part of me was also nervous. I was somewhat nervous because one thing that always unnerved me was having to interact with other people. I was somewhat alright when I was growing up because I came from a small town but going to a big university was somewhat unnerving.

The day I arrived was one of those days where I honestly wish I would have chose a smaller community college because there were so many other people there. The line for people to get their proper paperwork was long and the line at the housing office was horribly long. Multiple people were getting to know one another but I just stood in line with my head down, trying not to draw any attention to myself. I did look up for a brief few seconds and saw that a girl with pink hair was doing the same thing. I thought to myself, "Well at least I'm not the only introvert here."

The moment I saw her, she captivated me. I got a better look at her when she turned back for a few seconds and saw me trying to avoid talking to others. I saw her give me a brief smile and then I returned it. The very first thoughts that began to run through my mind was whether I would ever run into her and get a chance to talk with her. I will admit, I began to wish so hard that I could talk with her and see if we had anything in common.

Very soon the unthinkable happened. She moved back in line and got right beside me. I was even more shocked when she began a conversation, "Um hi, my name is Fluttershy. What is yours?"

I replied, "My name is Luke." I replied.

Fluttershy replied, "It is very nice to meet you Luke."

"It is very nice to meet you too Fluttershy."

There for probably a good half minute there was an awkward silence between us. I was so nervous that I was at a loss of words but then I figured I'd continue the conversation the way most other new college students would, "So Fluttershy, what are you studying?"

I'm in the pre-vet program." She replied, "I really like animals. What are you studying?"

I replied, "I'm majoring in finance. I'm hoping to one day either be a personal banker or a stock broker. I've always been fascinated by the stock market and the economy over all."

"Um, that's nice." She replied

Before we knew it, we had reached the front of the line. I decided to let her go first and hoped that wouldn't be the only time we communicated with one another. I waited as she was getting all her information, including her dorm room key. When she got up to leave, I was saddened. I thought that I would probably be lucky to even see her in passing but before I got sat down she asked, "Um, if it is ok with you, could we spend some more time together after you're done?"

I was elated. I never once thought that she would want to spend more time with me after such a brief conversation. I replied, "I'd love to Fluttershy."

I would be even more surprised when she just waited there for me to get all my information. I couldn't believe that she would actually wait there with me. Apparently she wanted us to get to know one another a lot more than I imagined. Maybe she figured that since I'm introverted too, that we would be more comfortable in the company of one another. Regardless though, I wasn't complaining about it.

Once I got my housing information, she wanted to know where I was going to live. I was shocked but I showed her and then she showed me where she was placed. She was put on the fourth floor of Manehattan hall and I was put on the fifth floor of the same hall. She gave me a cute smile and said, "It looks like we won't be living too far apart."

I returned the smile and replied, "It looks that way."

She then began to go through more of her papers and discovered that her advising appointment was in thirty minutes. I too started to go through my papers and discovered that my advising appointment was at the same time. In unison we said, "It looks like our advising appointments are at the same time!"

Now yeah, we were happy that we could get our advising appointments done at the same time but again I began to have my concerns that this may be the last time outside of either a similar class or a random passing we would see one another, until she asked me something, "Luke, what would you think about meeting up at the cafeteria for lunch at noon?"

I replied, "I'd love that Fluttershy, I'd love it." I didn't know if me simply going in and waiting for her would be the best idea so I suggested, "How about I wait outside the doors and then we can go in together."

Fluttershy gave me a smile and replied, "I'd love to. That way we can sit together."

We took off in separate directions and I was thrilled with the way things were going so far. I may not be real good at interacting with people I don't know but with Fluttershy, it seems like maybe we are both that way. Maybe that is why we seem to be clicking so well or does fate have something else in store for us. Whatever it was, I was going to cherish every moment I got to spend with her because it isn't often that something like this happens.
