The Masked Horror
The Rise of the Fallen
Load Full StoryNext ChapterLong ago, when the pony tribes were still divided, and Celestia did not know what her destiny awaited.
A new person emerged from the ashes of an unexplained cataclysm, an enormous pillar of light, as if the heavens were broken in half, and as if a star fell from space. His name was lost for generations, those who knew him did not know his name, and those who did, did not have the courage to speak it out loud.
That was the Masked Horror, a being that we still don't know from what origin it came.
Ancient scholars discovered he was of an ancient species that even from their vast and documented knowledge of the past, still couldn't find out any information about it except fairy tale stories.
Whatever species he was from, it should be one of the most powerful that has ever set foot on this land.
He was known for his enormous charisma. No one could believe that he could become a threat, he always gave off a huge and friendly aura, making anyone easily calm down and relax. Always acted silly and happy so everyone always ignored whatever he was doing, brushing it off as just 'him being him'.
A huge mistake, as he used it as a huge technique for everyone and anyone to underestimate him, so much so that when something happened and the clues pointed at him, no one could believe that a male with the mental ability of a 5 year old foal could do anything. So the blame was put on someone else.
And as they were mistaken, he used this to slowly gain the trust of Celestia and Luna and slowly corrupted our former moon princess little by little, seeing that our wonderful princess of the day was unbreakable.
At the same time, he spread lies among the three tribes, creating more hatred among them, making unification even more difficult.
Even worse, it was he who created the honor codes that the Griffins still follow today.
He went behind the princesses' backs, backing with our worst enemies and corrupting them more and more.
And when our wonderful princess of the sun discovered everything, it was too late. The masked monster had completely corrupted our princess of the Moon and in consequence, created Nightmare Moon. And together with the Griffins and Batponys, they started 'the great division'.
After many years of conflict our princess was challenged by Nightmare Moon, where after an intense fight, our goddess came out victorious. She did one of the hardest decisions of her life, it hurts her, but it was the right thing to do to save us all. She banished her sister to the moon.
Even so, he didn't stop, and it took another 5 years of bloodier conflicts to defeat him. With his corrupted magic, he almost won. But the princess managed to outsmart him using the Elements of Harmony, Celestia managed to transform him into a statue before he could finish her, thereby bringing the war to a swift end.
The defeated Griffins retreated back to the mountains and the Batpony's finally merged back with their own people, a period of peace and harmony followed, giving way to a golden age, where we are living today.
And today he remains here, in the garden of the castle, being kept in the eyes of our glorious ruler in case of his return, where he stayed since thousands of years ago.
Clapping noises could be heard when the teacher finished her story behind the statue they were sitting by.
"Wow teacher! I never knew about this! This is so cool!" Another foal nodded
"Yeah! Celestia is so cool! Kicking bad guy's flanks!" He said raising a fist to the top in bravado, while the classmates laughed and agreed. The teacher just shook her head sideways negatively with a smile amused.
"The Statue that I am showing is the main reason how things are shaped here in Equestria, and is the main reason why the Griffins are warriors rather than harmonious like us." One of the Foals turned his head in confusion.
"He is the sole reason why the griffins are big meanies? How did he do that?" The Teacher looked at the foal who asked the question, she appeared to be unamused, and slowly walked towards the student and pulled his ear making it hurt a little.
"OWWWW!" The teacher then released the ear of the foal and crossed her arms, looking with a judgmental expression.
"If you were paying attention, you wouldn't have to ask that question, you little silly."
All the Foals around giggled at the situation, and the one who got scolded would run his hand over his ear, which was pulled in shame with his head down.
"I'm sorry....." The Professor gave a small smile and turned around walking back to her place.
"You are excused."
She would then gather her things and got up again.
"Alright class, pick up your belongings and we will head back to class, the tour is over." All of them got their heads down in sadness.
"Aaaawww."
The teacher closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
"Alright, we will come back another day." The children changed their expressions almost instantly.
"YAY!"
They all started to pack up their things, getting up from the beautiful lawn where they were all located, and hurriedly ran out of the garden towards the exit to go home to each one.
While the teacher was doing the same, one of the foals came towards her, one of the brightest and one of the most timid of the students.
The Professor noticed her instantly.
"Oh! Trixie, I thought you went with your friends, what do you need, dear?" The shy blue crystalline Unicorn hugged her books about her chest and looked to the ground, while building up the courage to talk to the teacher.
"Ma'm, w-why would s-someone as p-powerful as h-him, d-do s-so m-much bad...?" The teacher's gaze would soften with the child's so innocent question, she would smile while kneeling in front of the child and placing a hand to comfort her, she would be surprised, and would look back at the teacher.
"Trixie, you have to understand that people like him are arrogant, they don't think of anypony other than himself."
His expression would be sad as he hugged his books tighter.
"B-but C-Celestia is as powerful as him, w-why he i-isn't like her...?"
The Professor was surprised for a second, but she quickly composed herself almost forgetting how smart that little one was.
"Celestia is different from the masked. She worries about her children, with us." She motioned for both of them
"She does everything just to please and protect us. People like him don't care, they just want to have more things than others, at the cost of hurting others."
She reflected a little, before facing the teacher again and nodding.
"I understand, thank you, ma'm!" The Professor smiled warmly, slowly she got up and walked with her hand on Trixie's shoulder as they left the garden.
"No need to thank me Trixie, is a privilege to teach such intelligent students such as yourself, come, let's have some ice cream, you like apple flavor?" She nodded eagerly.
"Yes! It's my favorite!"
Both laughed as they left the garden, not noticing the small crack appearing on the statue with a small stone coming out and falling on the grass.
Another year, and another summer sun celebration, she wasn't going to lie. She was happy for her subjects, she really was! But it was a date that brought no good memories for her, the day of her sister's banishment. The day she lost everything.
Looking out the window of her throne room, she could see the statue of her former friend and rival, his mask and that menacing look as he crossed his fingers, preparing for a magic spell that never came.
She gritted her teeth thinking about that bastard, everything he did, all the pain he brought to Equestria.
'He kept acting like a fool around us, always making us laugh, always having fun, always listening to us.'
'And without us knowing, he deceived us, he betrayed us without we even suspecting a thing.'
She sighed as she slowly passed her hand over the back of her throne. She missed those moments; the laughter, the games...
'Why couldn't it have continued? Why did he had to betray me?' She slowly closed her fist tightly as she shivered.
'Wasn't our happiness enough for him? Wasn't our love... Enough...?' She slowly struggled to keep the tears from flowing, sniffling and wiping her eyes.
The bastard could have done anything, but of everything he could have done, why my sister? Why Luna....? She threw herself on the throne and put her hands on her face, unable to contain it any longer.
Why Luna....? Why did you join him...? What did that bastard do to you....? In her mental breakdown, she could not notice in the small cracks that appeared on the statue. Suddenly in the eyes under the mask, a red glow appeared, with a symbol that thousands of years ago, had terrified the whole world.
He was back
