AKA: Shining Armor's Promiscuous Reveal
The Crystal Empire was sitting fairly still one particular night, with only the minimal amount of ponies out and about. Due to how late it was, only a few drunken Crystal Ponies were stumbling down the streets after a fun weekend evening. Back at the Crystal Castle, the night shift of Crystal Guards had just begun their rounds for another uneventful evening. Most of the windows were dark from the inside, indicating that the palace was just as still as the rest of the city. But with the minimal amount of candles illuminating the hallways, it wasn’t too difficult for a Royal Advisor to walk around freely.
Spike the Dragon, who had recently been inducted as one of the highest-ranked figures back at Canterlot Castle alongside Princess Twilight Sparkle, was enjoying a pleasant stroll by himself without interruption. He may have already been recognized as a hero throughout all of Equestria, despite how much his more… controversial exploits that made his name just as recognizable to most ponies; but considering how he helped to personally save the Crystal Empire multiple times in his life, his status in the city was outright legendary in comparison to most other regions. Because of his reputation, the little purple dragon didn’t receive any questions when he walked past Guards standing at their posts; instead, they merely nodded back at him with thankful smiles.
Well, there may have also been a couple sultry-looking glances here and there. But Spike didn’t seem to mind that too much~
“Hmmmm…” When he rounded a corner into an empty hallway, Spike hummed to himself in contemplation as he stared up at a nearby clock. It was almost midnight, which prompted him to double-check a scroll he had stashed in his backpack. The dragon read through the details, clarifying that he would need to start his investigation soon. However, even though he knew he had enough time to start his work early, his face skewed in apprehension when he looked back down the hallway.
“Well…” There was a large set of doors at the very end of the hall, which were usually guarded more strictly than any other part of the castle. But on this particular night, Spike already knew that Princess Cadance made some special arrangements so the doors wouldn’t be placed on the Crystal Guards’ patrol schedule. It was an extremely risky move for her to have done, even as one of the Empire’s Co-Rulers with near-total impunity throughout the castle. Of course, considering who was waiting just past those doors, even Spike couldn’t help gulping worriedly. But after a quick exhale, the dragon stepped forward while muttering under his breath, “I really hope Cadance knows what she’s doing…”
Spike looked back behind him when he reached the doors, but was grateful to see he was still alone in the hallway. He then gave the door a couple of hard knocks, and stepped back to give himself some distance. Even though he knew he shouldn’t be too worried, it was hard for the dragon not to carry a fretful look on his face. Fortunately, as soon as he saw the doorknob turning, Spike grew a sterner looking expression while crossing his arms over his chest.
The doors finally opened to reveal Sombra, the twice-defeated foe of the Crystal Empire. After his catastrophic defeat at the hooves of Twilight Sparkle and the Elements, it was nothing short of a miracle that he was able to be revived by Discord as part of a “Rehabilitation Program.” Spike was especially shocked that Twilight approved of such a measure, but he couldn’t really say much about her choices nowadays. Since several months had passed since his probation began, with Sombra being confined to the castle under strict surveillance, the former villain hadn’t done anything to warrant further punishment; although, that may have just been because he saw the statuesque remains of the Legion of Doom, and understood how easily he could be added to that morbid display.
“Aaahhhh… I was wondering when you would come by~” Sombra’s voice was deep and surprisingly regal, strangely matching the snide grin he was carrying through his piercing fangs. The stallion seemed fairly confident as he stood at his doorway before Spike, despite the fact that his horn had been removed to ensure the Crystal Empire’s safety; instead of the blood-red appendage that curved like a demon’s horn, it had been replaced with a carbon-fiber prosthetic that helped to nullify any residual magic. But even with that measure in place, Spike still gulped when he realized he was alone with this former fiend. Fortunately, Sombra didn’t seem too upset as he asked the dragon, “So, I take it that Princess Cadance informed you of things beforehoof?”
“Ummm… Y-Yeah!” Spike quickly shook his head to clear his thoughts, almost getting too flustered to really think that well. He may have been before a lot of intimidating men in his years, but it was a much different thing to be alone with a villain he personally helped defeat twice in a row. Luckily, the dragon held up his scroll and nodded to Sombra affirmatively. “She… She told me most of the details in this letter already.”
“May I read through it myself?” Sombra held out his hoof, remaining cordial for the Royal Advisor. “I want to make sure we’re on the same page~”
Spike’s expression skewed worriedly, most-likely expecting for something bad to happen if he extended his claw out to him. But much to the dragon’s relief, Sombra carefully took the scroll from Spike when it was handed out to him. Sombra held the paper with a hoof, while his other struggled to keep himself upright under his weight. “Ugh… I swear, it was so much easier to read things with magic.”
“Heh~” Spike giggled nervously as he averted his eyes from the Ex-King. “Yeah, Twilight mentioned that when we were in the Mirror World.”
Sombra wasn’t fully aware of that context, but he still nodded nonetheless. He narrowed his eyes, and read through the scroll that Spike was given by the Princess:
Dear Spike,
I know that this is an inconvenient means of giving you this information, but I’m not able to speak with you about this personally with so many castle staff around. I also wanted this in writing so you can have it as proof for later context.
This is going to be a difficult thing to explain, but I trust that you’ll understand that I’m not writing this out of malice or sabotage. I know that Shining Armor is a brother to you, and I don’t want you to lose any respect or admiration for him. I still love my husband with all my heart, and I know deep-down that he feels the same way. So please, please read through this letter completely without passing any judgement…
“Hmmm…” Sombra’s brows rose up as he read through the finer details of the scroll, leaving Spike to grimace worriedly across from him. The stallion nodded in agreement to the things Cadance noticed of her husband, and why she requested Spike’s assistance in the first place. And even with how shocking some of the details may have been, Sombra still said to himself, “I have to admit, she really sounds like she cares about her husband’s happiness.”
“Uhhh… yeah…” Spike couldn’t really say much, and was still trying to process the letter himself. Even though he agreed with Sombra’s point, it wasn’t easy for him to look past the fact that his brother was acting the way that Cadance was describing in the scroll.
Sombra reached the end of the letter, and his eyes widened when he saw what the Princess included:
I know that this is a lot to process, and I’m so sorry I had to tell you through writing. But again, I can’t stress how much this information has to stay out of the public eye. Shining might be a prideful stallion in a lot of ways, but I know his confidence doesn’t equate in certain aspects like yourself.
With that being said, I hope you can also understand why I’m wanting Sombra to assist you with this mission. I can’t trust any of the castle staff, or even the Crystal Guards to stay silent on this matter. However, since Sombra is wanting to establish himself as a stallion willing to help us as Rulers, I want to trust that you’ll keep a strong eye on him at all times. Plus, when Sombra informed me himself of his suspicions regarding Shining, he pointed out that none of the Crystal Ponies would ever believe him if he tried to say anything; and as much as I would hate to admit it, he’s probably right.
I already told Sombra this personally, but I’ll also have this for you to know yourself: If he agrees to help you confront my husband about his… exploits, I’ll agree to give him some extra privileges while living under my probation. However, I should emphasize that you have the final say on how well he behaves if you agree. If he tries any funny-business, do not hesitate to tell me immediately.
With that all being said, I hope that you understand why I asked YOU to help me with this problem. Since you’re the most experienced being I know when it comes to these things, I trust that you’ll be able to help Shining personally. And since Sombra gave me this information first, I need you to assure me that his claims are legitimate.

“Hmph~” Sombra huffed with a coy-looking smirk by the time he handed Spike his scroll back. “Even in a letter meant to be burned after reading, she’s still cordial as Princess. That’s impressive.”
“Yeah, I suppose…” Since Sombra and Spike were currently on the same page in regards to Cadance’s given information, the dragon held out the letter before taking a deep breath. Unlike his magical flames, which are meant to transport important messages between rulers via dragon-breath, a bright orange bust of fire erupted from his mouth the moment he exhaled. The blazing fire ignited the scroll in an instant, with the paper being flammable enough to turn a flash of ash in less than a millisecond.
Sombra jolted back in surprise for a moment, not expecting Cadance to use a scroll with the structural integrity of toilet paper. Although, given what the scroll detailed regarding the Crystal Empire’s other ruler, Sombra couldn’t help shrugging when he said, “Well, at least there’s no evidence aside from our testimonies now.”
Spike sighed a breath of extinguished smoke, and then shot a sterner stare up at Sombra. “Alright, before we do anything else, I need to hear it from you first and foremost. Did you really see my brother how Cadance detailed it in the scroll?”
Sombra’s smile flattened when he saw how firmly Spike was glaring up at him. It was obvious that the dragon wasn’t trustworthy of him, but he had a feeling that it wasn’t just because of his past. Even though he couldn’t blame Spike if that was the case, Sombra felt compelled to say with sincerity, “Spike, I can assure you that Shining Armor’s actions are exactly as Cadance wrote it. Considering my reputation around this city, I don’t really have much reason to endanger my safety by lying about the current Rulers, would I?”
Spike narrowed his eyes on him briefly, but didn’t say anything in response. Even though Sombra hadn’t tried to reclaim the Crystal Empire (most-likely because he knew he’d get his ass handed to him a third time by Spike and the Elements of Harmony), that didn’t change the fact that he was still reviled by all of the Crystal Empire. Heck, if he wasn’t being held under tight probation under Twilight’s insistence, Sombra would’ve most-likely been strung up by the Crystal Ponies the moment he was revived and brought to the city. And given what he tried to inform Cadance about, Spike couldn’t deny that Sombra’s claim wouldn’t do him any favors if he told anypony else.
“Well… I suppose that’s true…” After a sharp huff, Spike’s threatening scowl returned as he poked Sombra's chest, and got up close to his face. “But don’t you think for a second that I won’t prosecute you myself if you try anything under my watch! You got it?!”
“Whoa, whoa, WHOA!” Sombra reeled back with both hooves raised in innocence. “Spike, I promise I won’t try anything! You’re literally a fire-breathing dragon! I would need a lobotomy to think I could get away with that.”
Spike’s bitter glare made it look like he wasn’t convinced; however, he noted Sombra’s sincere tone before pulling back slowly. The moment there was a good amount of space between them, Sombra scoffed and said with a teasing smirk, “Jeeze, if that’s how you treat all stallions, it’s hard to believe your promiscuous reputation is genuine~”
Spike’s scowl soured up even more, and he pointed at him with a claw warningly. “Do I need to remind you that you held my family hostage, AND put a literal baby in bondage?!”
“Okay, you win that argument,” noted Sombra with a shrug. “Although in my defense, Flurry Heart was an Alico--”
“NO! No excuses, dude! The moment you do that to a BABY, you don’t get to defend that!”

Even though dark magic possession was a feasible excuse worthy of redemption, it was obvious that Spike trusted the Ex-Tyrant as far as he could throw him. “Alright, fine,” he said in defeat, before he and Sombra began to make their way down the hall. “Cadance already planned out the route we can take without being seen by the Guards. But we have to be careful.”
“Oh, really?” he muttered sarcastically. “I would’ve never assumed I would be in danger around the ponies I previously enslaved.”
“Dude, just shut up!” Spike groaned as he led the way with Sombra in tow. “I have a good thing with the Crystal Ponies, and I know that being caught with you would ruin that more than Thorax almost did.”
“Hmph~ A good thing, hmmm?” As they walked, Sombra leaned in close to Spike’s ear and whispered teasingly, “Do you mean after saving the Empire from me, or blowing every stallion who asked afterward?~”
Spike didn’t stop walking, but he shot a warning glare in contrast to the stallion’s taunting grin. “Both.”
Sombra’s brows rose up in surprise, which gave Spike the opportunity to walk a little faster and put some distance between them. Sombra tried to catch up while keeping his hoofsteps discrete; but at the same time, he couldn’t help muttering to himself, “Wow, talk about shameless…”
Fortunately for Spike and Sombra, the two didn’t encounter any unwanted attention as they snuck their way out of the Crystal Castle. Not only did Cadance alter the Guards’ shift schedules so there would be blind-spots for them to pass by without detection, but Sombra’s knowledge of the castle allowed for them to use a couple of undisclosed passageways. Spike made sure to take note of every secret tunnel and turning bookcase they used, just in case Sombra was keeping any of that intel away from Cadance’s knowledge. But much to their relief, the two soon found themselves outside the Crystal Guard Barracks completely unseen.
“Well, that was entertaining,” whispered Sombra as he looked back at the castle with a smirk. “I guess you weren’t kidding about having experience sneaking in and out of castles, huh?”
“Well, not this successfully…” Spike kept his focus as he poked his head up to one of the open windows. There was just enough illumination from the candlelight to peer into the building without being seen. Much to his surprise, all that he saw at first were rows of empty bunk-beds, and no sleeping Guards in sight. Even though that detail made Sombra’s claims sound inconsistent, the fact that no ponies were visible warranted a little suspicion of its own. Because of that, Spike ended up glancing back at him with a raised brow. “Ummm… are you sure that Shining is here? Because I don’t see anypony in there.”
“Wait, what?!” Sombra went in to peek through the window as well, and appeared surprised by the barrack’s vacancy. He blinked a couple times in confoundment, before muttering with a shake of his head. “But… But I could’ve sworn I overheard them saying it happened on Saturday nights regularly.”
“Wait, you overheard it?!” Spike’s voice raised as he glared back at Sombra intensely. “What do you mean you ‘overheard’ it?! I thought you told Cadance you knew about this personally!”
“SSSHHHH!! Spike, keep your voice down!” Sombra looked around the outside of the barracks frantically, and then whispered back at him, “And for your information, I told her what I heard because nopony else would! If it wasn’t for me, she wouldn’t have any idea what he’s doing!”
“Hmph.” Spike’s scoff was accompanied by a flat stare while crossing his arms. “Well, considering what’s in there, it doesn’t seem like anypony’s doing anything.”
“Yeah, but why?!” Sombra peered back through the window again, looking fairly baffled by his intel. “I mean, the Crystal Guards are usually back in the barracks by sundown. And I doubt they changed the procedures since my days of rule.”
“Dude, who knows?” Spike didn’t seem too concerned as he shrugged to that point. “Maybe they had to do some extra training or something. Shining mentioned having to do all-night punishments during training as a cadet.”
“If that’s the case, we would’ve seen ponies out in the training fields on the way here, right?”
“Hmmmm…” Spike tapped his chin and hummed in thought. “... Maybe they’re out in the Frozen North for training exercises?”
“Hmph, that’s unlikely.” Sombra glanced out at the border of the Crystal Empire, which was covered by a thick barrier of crystallized magic which protected the city from the brutal elements outside. “Unless the platoon is composed entirely of yaks, I doubt any of them can last more than an hour out in that environment.”
By that point, Spike was beginning to grow just as confused as Sombra. He glanced back at the barracks briefly, and then walked away from the window to search for clues. “Okay, this is getting weird…”
With Sombra following close behind, the little dragon walked over to the corner of the barrack building. Even though the interior appeared strangely still, the fact that neither of them could hear much activity outside was becoming increasingly alarming. Spike poked his head around the corner to investigate. “I have no idea what’s going on, but I’m sure there’s a vali--NNNGHHH!!”
The dragon instantly reeled back with a gasp, falling backwards into Sombra’s chest. The stallion was quick to catch Spike, and pulled him away from the corner so they wouldn’t be seen. When he looked down at him, Sombra was surprised to see how wide Spike’s eyes had gotten with a shell-shocked look on his face.
