Diamond Tiara was angry.
To many, if not all that knew her, that wasn’t a surprise. It seemed to be the default demeanour of the earth pony mare, who glowered in the direction of anyone unlucky enough to accidentally look in hers. Despite her small, petite frame, even a towering stallion flinched under her directed gaze. One would presume it was in her nature, that an errant flame from Tartarus had somehow found its way into the soul of some random filly to make her so choleric. It spoke volumes about the teen than that the only explanation for her candour was a touch of pure evil. It was rather ironic then that the source of her fury originated entirely from the mortal realm...
“Diamond Tiara, where’s my sleep mask?”
Manehatten. Colloquially known as the city of lights. That fact certainly made it a bane to Luna, light pollution and all, but it was definitely one of Diamond Tiara’s favourite places in theory. Sky high buildings, countless stores and a roaring nightlife for ponies her age. Unfortunately, ‘fun’ and ‘Manehatten’ were words that refused to meet in her mind like two positive poles of a magnet.
“Diamond Tiara, I know you can hear me!”
Diamond grimaced at the shrill voice of her mother. Every occasion in which Diamond was in the city of her dreams, she was unfortunately joined by her mother. Or rather, she was dragged along by her mother, often giving the unscrupulous duty of ‘trip organiser’, ‘baggage carrier’ and ‘maid’ all the same. Spoiled Rich was a socialite, travelling far and wide to attend fundraisers and charity events, shaking hands with the wealthy and famous all in the name of a good cause. It was all an act really, one not even her father could see through, since he was the one that insisted they went together in the name of mother-daughter bonding. Diamond knew her mother more than anyone, and arrogant barely scratched the surface of Spoiled’s flaws. In fact, Diamond considered that the worst duty forced upon her, one unfortunately assigned at birth: being the daughter to Spoiled Rich!
“Diamond, do not make me shout a third time!”
Diamond growled, her lithe frame rising from her bed. She marched towards the door of their adjoining rooms, her stomps ineffectual on the plush carpet. She couldn’t complain about the quality of the bedroom, since five-star hotels tried to keep the list of cons as few as possible but she would happily go down a few stars if it meant she was in better company. Her hand coiled around the doorknob and yanked it open, trying to keep her anger contained behind a firm jaw and flared nostrils.
Her eyes landed on her mother’s back, boring holes into it. Spoiled was adorned in a decadent red silk dressing gown, applying a green-hued face mask across her cheeks with meticulous focus. Her eyes, blue like sapphires, met her daughter’s gaze through the reflection in the mirror. Diamond knew if it weren’t for the green later of slime covering Spoiled’s face, she would be at the receiving end of a scowl.
“Where’s my sleeping mask, dear?” Spoiled asked flatly, although Diamond picked up the mild sound of annoyance. The use of ‘dear’ wasn’t sincere either. She used the affectionate term with dozens of others. If anything, it was mocking. “If I don’t get a good night’s sleep, I’ll look positively haggard for the ball tomorrow.”
Diamond let out a short, sharp breath through her nostrils. She might have counted to ten if her mother wasn’t so tight-fisted with time as she was money. “I don’t know.”
“You do know,” she asserted pretentiously, running her thumb down her snout, “You’re the one who packed it.”
Diamond crossed her arms over her small chest, giving a non-committal shrug. Her mother was being difficult. Like always. “All I know is that I did pack it. If you can’t find it, that means you lost it.”
Spoiled smirked, pausing the application to shoot a condescending look through the mirror. “Well, that would be wrong, wouldn’t it?”
Diamond arched an eyebrow, her features becoming harder. “What do you mean?”
“Well, I’m not incompetent, so…” she trailed off, the implication of her words both blunt and piecing.
Diamond clenched her jaw. She had been at the receiving end of her mother’s remarks for years now. She thought by now, since she was effectively an adult, that they would have lost their potency. Yet, they still struck her as harshly as they did as a filly. If her mother’s words were daggers, she would have been covered head to hooves with holes – a Swiss cheese mare, so to speak. Diamond’s retort to such stabbing words had been unchanged from childhood.
“Funny isn’t it? At anypony else, I’d be furious,” Spoiled continued casually, resuming the application of her mask, “I suppose I just expect it from you at this point.”
Diamond winced, closing her eyes. That was new. It was one thing to call her such but to expect it. There was something particularly hurtful about that. It wasn’t common that her insults were as laden with implication as her words, twisting them even deeper.
“Now, be a good filly and apologise. That’s something I know you can do,”
Diamond said nothing. It was as though something was clogging her throat. Perhaps it was the same thing that was bubbling like a cauldron in her chest. It was hot, violent, and intense.
“No,” Diamond replied in shaky defiance, the only word that was permitted by the blockage in her throat.
“I stand corrected,” Spoiled replied with derision, scoffing. “Can’t you do anything right?”
“Shut up!” she seethed suddenly, glaring at Spoiled through the reflection.
“Diamond Tiara!” Spoiled barked, audibly surprised and so much so in fact, she actually looked over her shoulder to stare down the enraged mare. “Don’t speak to your mother like that!”
“Shut up, shut up, shut up!” Diamond reiterated, stomping each of her hooves in punctuation as her arms fell down her sides, tightly clenched fists at their ends.
Spoiled arose suddenly from the chair, pivoting on her hoof and firing a hateful stare at Diamond. Her expression had warped into a scowl, her squinting eyes causing imperfections in the face mask. “How dare you speak to me like that. I have half a mind to--”
“Cunt!” Diamond flung the harshest word in her arsenal at her mother, the invective insult and its accompanying rush gave her unprecedented satisfaction.
Spoiled’s gasp was so long and so sharp that one would think she was trying to inhale all the air inside the room. Shocking the colour out of her mother’s face, or so she presumed since it was hidden under a layer of green gunk. She wondered if anypony had ever done that before, insult her mother directly. Yet, she couldn’t savour the accompanying feeling. It was like she popped the cork off her rage, allowing it to spread out and fill every inch of her body. She had to get out of the same room as her mother, worried that the fists down her sides wouldn’t remain there for long sharing the same space.
She huffed hot air from her nostrils like a bull before marching her way over to the door that led to the corridor. She slammed it open, making sure to slam it closed behind her as well, trying to vent her anger in any way she could. Although at this point, she doubted she could release it in such a way that didn’t lead to the razing of several buildings. And whilst she could take it out on someone, for some reason that no longer appealed to her anymore.
So she continued her pacifist rampage, stomping all the way down the corridor, wearing a snarl as she ground the indentation of her hoof into the carpet. There was now a red-faced monster in the hotel, and her name was Diamond Tiara.
She wanted out. In the haze of her furious mind and over the sound of her racing heart she was certain of that much. It was true in her mother’s room and it was also true for the hotel. She mashed the button for the elevator when she reached it, hammering the poor thing until it finally arrived. She entered the suspended box, breathing hot air from her nostrils. After a moment, she glanced sideways at the attendant inside, a low growl sounding from her gullet.
“Umm…” The stallion, clad in a red and gold uniform, had his hand wrapped around the elevator crank. Diamond could already see a bead of sweat run down the side of his head. He was spangly, young. A prime target back at school. Now, he was nothing to her. “W-which floor, ma’am?”
“I want out!” she roared at him, stomping her hoof assertively.
“O-okay!” he yipped, forcing a fractured smile as he pulled on the crank, the elevator beginning its descent…
She lost track of the time. Manehatten at night was something she always wanted to experience, yet her eyes weren’t bedazzled by the lights of its myriad skyscrapers, nor were the soft gasps of wonder leaving her mouth at the sight of the city’s signature Zeppelins. Her hooves carried her nowhere, moving like a leaf on the wind. She strayed from the brightly illuminated path to somewhere dim, with failing lights and dark alleyways. Diamond didn’t know where she was and she didn’t care. Even when she was rubbing her bare arms, the cold finally getting to her, she refused to head back. She just wanted to keep going. She hated Spoiled, and she refused to – even internally – to refer to her as anything else.
“You’re not my mom...” Diamond didn’t know why she said it aloud. Perhaps to reaffirm the fact, giving a degree of actuality. If a parent could disown a child, then she was determined to do the same to mother. Correction. Ex-mother.
Suddenly, mid-step, she felt something wet land on her cheek. She stopped in reaction, wiping her thumb across the afflicted spot. A raindrop. A weary sigh escaped her frowning lips. Looking up, it suddenly started to rain. And rain heavy. Her eyes shutting in reflex as her face was at the receiving end of a sudden downpour. She hung her head and held her own torso tight, breaking out into a run.
It didn’t take long before her clothes were soaked through, her normally well-kept mane reduced to cheek and neck plaster. She was determined not to go back to the hotel but to die to exposure was only slightly less preferable. As she ran, amongst the dark dwellings of this sleeping corner of the city, she saw the flicker of a candle within one of the windows. Nearing it, she was surprised to see that it was a store of sorts. There was no sign on the front of the building, nor anything to indicate such in the windows. Her theory was simply down to the sign hanging from the door, one which assured that it was very much open to the public.
Although some part of her warned her from entering the mysterious abode, her desperation was much stronger than her fear. She pushed the handle down and rushed inside, closing the door on the rain behind her.
“Hello?” Diamond called out, warily scanning her newfound surroundings.
The interior was tensely quiet, the silence interrupted only by the drip-drip of water from her clothes and the beating of raindrops on the windows. The interior was illuminated entirely by candles, with pools of wax covering almost every raised surface she landed her eyes on. She took a few wary steps further inside, shivering from the cold and silently praying to Celestia that she hadn’t accidentally wandered into a horror movie.
“Hello, pony.”
Diamond turned on her hoof, snapping her widened eyes towards the source of the voice as she assumed a cautious posture. Her sights settled on a distinctly female shape behind a large, ornate table. Her eyes appeared to glow a bright cyan, with sharp piqued irises. Her face was triangular in shape, resting on her palm coolly. A small tuft of black hair sprouted between her large ears, the hair curling into a hook shape on her forehead. With her pink button nose, whiskers and claws, Diamond recognised her as an Abyssinian.
“Want to trade questions?” The Abyssinian asked in a purr, rhythmically tapping her fingers across her cheek.
“Uh…” Diamond was disoriented. Anger to melancholy, misery to bemusement. Spoiled Rich’s cold countenance to the warm visage of the exotic cat-lady. She approached the Abyssinian slowly, clenching her jaw to stop it chattering from the cold. “What kind of store is this?”
“Not one you’ve ever been in before,” she answered innocently, the accented twang to her words made her voice pleasant to listen to.
Diamond furrowed her eyebrows. “Uh… duh?”
She simply smiled in reply to Diamond’s jibe, looking the mare up and down. “Now let me ask one: are you cold?”
Diamond was close to echoing her previous reply but instead, she chose to nod, her legs beginning to shake.
“Then drink this.” The Abyssinian offered, pushing a convenient mug towards the adjacent side of her table, cheeks raising into a large, welcoming smile.
Diamond pulled out the ordinary chair from beneath the table after she reached it. Sitting down, she was quick to cradle the mug in both of her hands like a delicate treasure after she noticed the wisps that rose from the liquid. The warmth of the mysterious brew travelled into her hands through the mug, assuaging her somewhat. Although she was wary about accepting things from strangers, there was something complexly trusting about her. Diamond looked at the mysterious woman, who simply reinforced her already present smile. She brought it close to her face, where the pleasant aroma of something saccharine and faraway fluttered into her nose. She didn’t need any further encouragement to bring it to her lips, sipping on the rim furtively.
“Mmm.” She hummed in her mouth, surprised at the pleasant taste. It was alien to her buds but welcomed, all the same, making her lips curve into a smile as she drank it down. It had several odd qualities to it. As it travelled down her throat, she knew that were she to close her eyes, she could easily imagine herself sunbathing on a beach in Trottingham. And, memories that were blurry to her once upon a time, were suddenly pushed to the forefront of her mind in full saturation. Liquid nostalgia was the best descriptor that came to her mind. And even though it felt like her lips had barely just touched the mug, it was all gone not long after, filling her stomach with a nice warmth that reduced the cold and rain to a distant memory. Placing it back down, Diamond stared back at the cat’s unblinking eyes, her Cheshire grin still plastered across her features.
“Who are you?” It was Diamond’s turn to ask the obvious, the question burning in her mind ever since she laid her eyes on the cat.
“Diti,” she answered, accompanying her introduction with a small nod.
“Well, nice to meet you, Diti,” she replied, one of her cheeks pulling her lips back into a half-smile. Smiles didn’t feel right on her own face, not sincere ones away. Contemptuous smirks, impish grins, malicious sneers were common on her features. Someone truly deserving of her thanks was far and few between. “I’m Diamond Tiara,” she offered, hoping to disrupt the crag-like smile on her face by speaking.
“Likewise, Diamond Tiara.” She echoed the same sentiment Diamond extended, although her smile was much more elegant than her own. “You look upset. Are you upset?”
A sharp exhale left Diamond’s amused nostrils. “Isn’t that obvious? I was caught out in the rain.”
“Ah! But it’s not the rain that upsets you, that much is obvious,” she deduced, giving her a pointed stare.
“Hmph. Okay. Maybe you’re right. What does that have to do with you?” Diamond asked, her tone accusing. To Diamond, a hot beverage and sanctity from the rain did not entitle one to be privy in one’s personal life. Still, the cat’s pleasant candour kept her shapely butt rooted in the chair.
“Well, I could help you,” she offered, presenting her palm.
“How? Are you a therapist or something?” she asked derisively, face splitting into a grin.
Diti chuckled at Diamond’s reply, unaffected by her abrasive demeanour. “I could maybe point you in the right direction. But tell me: do you believe in wishes?”
Diamond scoffed, rolling her eyes. “Yeah – in kid’s stories. Wishes aren’t real.”
“Of course they are!” Diti retorted, her countenance seemingly awash with offence, so much so in fact that Diamond was close to experiencing a tincture of guilt. “Those who can cast them are exceedingly rare but we exist,” continued the Abyssinian, sporting a small frown.
Diamond sighed. She wasn’t in the mood to bash heads today, and there was just something… unsatisfying about seeing the cat-lady frown. “Fine, I’ll humour you. You just don’t like any genie I’ve ever seen.”
Diti suppressed a giggle, her mood seeming to flip on a dime as she shook her head at Diamond’s apparent whimsy. “We’re not nearly as silly.”
“Okay then,” she snickered, leaning on the table with a smarmy smile, “Then grant me a wish.”
“Very well…” Diti smiled, clearly delighted. However, her smile receded right after, her stare more pointed than before. “But before I do, I must explain the rules.”
“Rules?” said Diamond, sceptically cocking an eyebrow.
“The law of equivalent exchange doesn’t just pertain to alchemy. It’s true of all magic. Just as a unicorn withdraws energy from themselves to cast a spell, a wish can bring good fortune. But to balance, it requires misfortune as well…” Diti explained and, if Diamond didn’t know any better, it would appear that she revelled in doing so.
The feline’s serious lecture about something so obviously made up should have reduced Diamond to hysterics. And whilst her scepticism remained, she hated the sense she saw in Diti’s words – however slim it might have been, which further compounded her surprise. She gave Diti a nod, indicating the feline still held her attention, even if it appeared tenuous at best.
“There are rules to obey. Wishes are an extension of chaos. You are forcing Reality to grant you that which you desire, tearing things apart and making the impossible, probable. Certainly, your boon could be priceless and unmatched in extravagance, but reality expects equal recompense…” Diti continued, trailing off at the very end, her fingers interlocking into a hammock to hold her resting head. “Now that you know the risks involved, what inflames your desire, hmm?”
Diamond squinted her eyes. Although doubt lingered, Diti sounded convincing. There was an air of wonder to her explanation, a sort of theatre that Diamond might have lapped up as a foal. Sitting back in her chair, trying to appear as disassociated and disinterested from the atmosphere as possible, Diamond knew immediately what she wanted.
“Okay, I want you to make my… make Spoiled Rich,” she self-corrected, brushing off her err with a huff, “less of a vindictive bitch.”
Diti pursed her lips and screwing her eyes in thought, rolling her tongue around in her mouth. “Hmm. Changing your mother is a big wish. Another might’ve granted such a large wish without warning, but I am not nearly as cruel.”
Diti sounded charitable, and Diamond might have rolled her eyes if they weren’t stuck in a widened state. She gave almost nothing to imply the relationship between herself and Spoiled Rich, and it might have been a guess on the cat’s part but it still caught Diamond off guard. Still, if there was truth to what Diti said, she probably knew a lot more than she let on. Swallowing, Diamond loaded her next question, “W-why? What’s wrong with it?”
“Well, the cost of changing someone’s personality is immense. You’re changing not just their character but all the events that led to their behaviour. It could be as simple as changing one bad experience, or going so far as changing their parents – your grandparents. Depending on chance, it might lead to you no longer existing by changing the entire timeline or, worse yet, finding yourself similarly and permanently altered – aware but unable to do anything about it, trapped in your own body...” Diti explained, her voice low.
Diamond felt a cold sensation run down her spine. Without a smile on her face, Diti looked infinitely more serious, perhaps even a bit threatening. She felt the full weight of the wish on her shoulders, believing it completely. Wishes were something too good to be real, and now she knew the catch.
“But... I might be able to nudge her in the right direction for significantly less,” Diti offered, her fitting smile returning to her face.
“‘Might’. So it’s not certain?” Diamond queried.
“That is correct. A wish without certain results is much, much safer.”
“Okay, so… she might become a better pony?” Diamond probed, her eyebrows furrowing.
Diti gave a single nod.
“And then what happens to me in that situation?”
“You cannot escape the consequences, unfortunately, success or no. Although instead of outright misfortune, you’ll get a taste for Reality’s sense of humour. Safer but much more unpredictable. Still, I could hazard a few guesses…” Diti curled her bottom lip, giving a partial shrug.
Diamond gave a nod, encouraging her to continue.
“The consequence for you, much like for your mother should she realise her foulness, could be life-changing,” she began, her hands falling softly on the table, “but the consequences are far less reaching and not quite as damning. Do you want to change your mother? Well, you might undergo a smaller, more subtle change yourself.”
Diamond weighed her options. She was hung up on the level of ‘subtleness’ Diti spoke of. Maroon to crimson subtle or pyrite and gold? A subtle hue or the difference between affluence and ruin. However, the longer Diamond thought about it, Diti’s patient gaze upon her, the more the subject of the wish entered her head. The fleer of Spoiled, her contemptuous frown and stabbing remarks.
“I can… I can handle subtle,” Diamond replied, her face hardening into a determined expression.
Diti’s grin grew in size at her reply. “Happy to hear.”
Diamond inhaled deep through her nose, resolute. “Then I wish… for… whatever it is you’re suggesting exactly.”
Diti raised one of her paws, her large grin persisting as she stopped the limb at eye-level, her thumb and middle finger meeting. Diamond watched, holding her expression despite the sensation of dread that followed. Then, Diti clicked her fingers. Suddenly, Diamond’s eyes flew to the window, a burst of bluish light flashing before the whip-crack of an angry sky followed. Coincidence or not, she felt her heart quicken in her chest. She directed her gaze immediately after to the gipsy cat and, before she could speak, her eyelids grew heavy.
“Granted…” Diti confirmed, leaning back in her chair.
Diamond slumped forwards, her arm the only thing stopping her smashing her snout into the table. “What did you put… in… my…” She tried to summon words but they kept failing in her throat. She could only cast one further look to the feline before darkness totally consumed her vision...
Whilst Diamond had just slumped over in some strange store on a street nearby, Spoiled was in her room still. She was staring at her own reflection with a blank expression, ensuring the reapplied mask could dry. Concerning her appearance, she had done a meticulous job of hiding her years, even if a majority of her effort was hidden under a thin layer of green goop. No bags, very few wrinkles – even her mane was still naturally coloured and vibrant. Her body, hidden under a decadent silk gown, was equally cared for. Her breasts, perhaps her most prominent feature, barely showed a hint of sag despite being so large – measuring as G-cups. Further down her was stomach toned, her hips flared and matronly, and her ass was plump and still full of bounce. She had the body of someone at least ten, fifteen years her junior. As a result, a mirror was probably her most favourite place to be.
However, that evening she wasn’t the prime focus in her own head for once. Instead, it had been usurped by her disobedient daughter, and her thoughts on Diamond weren’t even near the levels of positivity she had for herself. She had spent every passing second conjuring up a possible punishment for her impudent spawn. Boarding school, cutting her off financially, leaking her foal photos to her college. That was operating on the assumption that her daughter would return. Nobody called her the ‘Big-C’ and got away with it!
As she pondered on the possible avenues for her revenge, her gaze suddenly pulled from the mirror to her left towards the bed. It felt like a twitch, an involuntary movement. It was sudden, a compulsive move that barely registered to her as anything. She put her sights back on her reflection without a second thought, removing a ring from her finger as tiredness began to set in. In the midst of doing so, her eyebrows furrowed. She sent her focus back to what grabbed her attention just moments prior. It was then she noticed something. A small, barely noticeable hoop of string sticking out from under the bed.
She huffed, as though inconvenienced, pushing the chair back and rising out of it. Taking the few necessary steps to cover the gap between the desk and bed, she then knelt down to pull out the mysterious object.
Spoiled sneered at what it was, rising back up with it in her hand, turning to hold it up to the light because she wasn’t sure of her senses at that moment. She couldn’t believe it, she almost outright refused to actually. Although her arm eventually fell, and she looked down upon it with a frown. “Oh. Well, I guess… she was… right…” she trailed off, falling rear first onto the bed with a grimace.
The mask was so small, yet heavy in her delicate hands. The material was silk, beautifully embroidered with a one of a kind pattern. It was exorbitantly expensive and frankly, a self-indulgent waste of money. Yet, it wasn’t the rather useless money sink that suddenly turned her melancholic. It was the fact she was wrong. She had been wrong in the past, even if she didn’t necessarily acknowledge those occasions ever. In the few that she did, she always attributed the fault to someone other than herself. And, of all those times, it was only now that she truly felt the grave consequence of her hubris.
She remembered Diamond’s face. The pain. The anger. The words that came from her own mouth. All of them. Every little thing she stabbed her daughter over the years. Every unnecessary remark. Every derisive little quip. Spoiled remembered them as vividly as yesterday. But with each and every one, she saw Diamond’s face within them, from a little filly to the mare she had grown to be. The sad little downturn, the aversion of her gaze and sometimes a submissive little nod. But always the accepting silence...
She felt a taloned hand squeeze around her heart, the sharp spikes threatening to pop her organ and in her current state, she would almost welcome it. Her own hand meanwhile crumpled up the expensive mask into a tight fist. She held it for a few seconds before opening it, letting it fall uselessly to the floor, the mare pouring as much of her hatred into it as she could. It didn’t make a difference to the pressure in her gut, the awful sensation of internal ravaging. Guilt stirred her insides for the first time in a long time. How did one assuage the anger directed at themselves? For that, she didn’t have the answer.
It didn’t take too long after the confrontation with her memories before her lips began to tremble, her eyes closing shut before cupping her face with her hands as she curled over, coating her palms in green goop. How long had it been since she shed tears that weren’t false?
She sobbed loudly, forced to listen to her own cries as the full weight of her misdeeds crashed down onto her back. It was cathartic in its own way. The cries of sorrow from her mouth were far more honest than any of the words it had let loose from it for years now. The longer she dwelled on her daughter, the more her regret compounded itself and the more corporeal she became. For the first time in a very long time, Spoiled Rich felt real.
“I’m sorry, I’m so so sorry,” she blubbered into her hands. A tad dramatic but she couldn’t contain it, even if she tried. She wished Diamond was there to hear her words and see her sorry state. It would have been only a small payment towards the colossal debt she owned her daughter.
Suddenly, she heard a door slam from the adjoining room. Her hands fell from her face as the tears stopped, her eyes stinging. She rose to her hooves and quickly made her way to the connecting door, driven by guilt and regret. Although, just as her palm connected with the door, she stopped. Try as she might, she couldn’t summon the will to open it. A million variables suddenly forced their way into her mind. If Diamond hadn’t collapsed onto her bed asleep then she was probably, if not definitely, still furious with her. Her forehead met the door as a firm frown appeared on her face, screwing her eyes tight, trying to will her intentions to the mare on the other side. It didn’t feel right to apologise now. She was a mess. So much so, she feared that Diamond might end up interpreting an apology for mockery instead. But, for the first time in her life, Spoiled felt guilty. She was fully prepared to do anything for Diamond at that moment, just… just not yet.
She pulled her head back, leaving a green splotch where her head connected with the wood. She then strode over to the telephone, her jaw firm. She would make things right tomorrow. It would take a long time – Celestia knows she had a lot to make up for, but Spoiled was filled with a fire that couldn’t be extinguished. She had to change. It wasn’t too late. It couldn’t be.
She picked up on the on-suite telephone, her finger dialling in the familiar numbers. She held the device up to her mouth and ear. Eventually, a voice on the other side picked up, and Spoiled took the first step in getting things right.
