The reason why Princess Celestia and Princess Luna never contribute in battles with the mane six is because they have already been through them a thousand years ago and now they are stressed with so many royal duties. The mane six sees this and decides to give the princesses a trip to the Ponyville spa, but it doesn't go all that well.
