Skating The Night Away

6/8/22

It was the last day of school and Turquoise and her friends were excited about summer vacation. Just as they were walking to the parking lot Serena’s phone rang.

“Hello?” Serena said.

“Serena we have a serious problem,” A girl on the other end said.

“Calm down what’s the problem?” Serena asked.

“Gale was grounded for defacing Cloudsdale High’s racketball court with Grafitti so she was forced to resign from the team,” The girl said.

“Well this sucks the qualifiers are tomorrow night and where are we supposed to find a replacement jammer on such short notice,” Serena said.

“I don’t know but unless we find one by tomorrow night we will have to forfeit,” The girl said. Serena hung up before she noticed Turquoise and the girls were listening.

“What was that about?” Turquoise asked.

“The jammer for our roller derby team did something stupid and now she can’t play with us anymore,” Serena said.

“What did Gale do now?” Haruka asked.

“She vandalized school property and is now grounded. I don’t know all the details but unless I find a replacement for Gale we can’t play in the qualifiers,” Serena said.

“I’ll do it,” Turquoise said.

“No offense Turquoise but we are talking about a highly aggressive sport with physical contact this is nothing like swimming laps in a pool,” Serena said.

“I know but I might just surprise you,” Turquoise said.

“What about you Haruka?” Serena asked.

“I’m the wrong person to play Jammer, I beat people up not pass them,” Haruka said.

“Autumn?” Serena asked.

“I’m not setting foot on that track I have seen what happens on there,” Autumn said.

“Sylvia?” Serena said pleadingly.

“I can’t my parents and I are going on vacation in Quebec and I need to head home and start packing,” Sylvia said.

“Fine come with me Turquoise but don’t blame me if you get hurt,” Serena said. Turquoise and Serena drove to the Roller Rink which was only fifteen minutes away from Crystal Prep. Turquoise was amazed that Canterlot City had a roller rink. Serena showed Turquoise to the locker room where three girls were waiting for them.

“There you are Serena,” A girl with mint-colored skin, yellow eyes, and mint green and white hair said.

“Hey Lyra,” Serena said.

“Who’s the redhead?” A girl with a slightly muscular build, tan skin, and white hair with purple tips asked.

“This is my friend Turquoise, She volunteered to take Gale’s place,” Serena said.

“Is she any good?” A girl with Persian blue skin, Purple eyes, and light blue hair with white highlights asked.

“Let’s see if she is,” Serena said before taking Turquoise to the track. Serena later came back with a pair of skates for Turquoise. “You are still a ladies size nine right?”

“I am,” Turquoise said before changing into the skates. As soon as she hit the track she moved almost as fast as lightning. The others were amazed Serena even more so. As soon as Turquoise came back the girls were impressed.

“Where did you learn to move with such elegance and speed?” Serena asked.

“My mom was quite the skater back in her high school days and kept videos of her past matches,” Turquoise said.

“That decides it. you are in,” Serena said.

“I believe now introductions are in order,” Lyra said.

“Right, Turquoise this is our pivot Lyra,” Serena said referring to Lyra.

“Nice to meet you,” Lyra said.

“Our lead blocker Gilda,” Serena said referring to the muscular girl.

“Yo,” Gilda said.

“And our third blocker, Cloudchaser,” Serena said referring to the girl with Persian blue skin.

“Hello,” Cloudchaser said in a singsong voice.

“And together we are the Canterlot Harpies,” Serena said.

“Cool name,” Turquoise said.

“That aside meet us here tomorrow at six pm so we can squeeze in some practice before the match,” Serena said. With that done the girls all returned home for the night.

The next day Turquoise arrived at the roller rink as scheduled. As soon as she went inside she went into the locker room and saw the others changing into green and purple roller derby outfits each with their own nicknames on them. Lyra’s was Heartbreaker, Gilda’s was Iron Talon. Cloudchaser’s was Skyquake. And Serena’s was Serene Requiem.

“You made it,” Lyra said joyfully.

“You didn’t think I would let you girls down did you?” Turquoise said.

“In any case get changed and be ready to go,” Serena said before tossing Turquoise her own team uniform that had the name Wildfire on it.

“Wildfire, is that my nickname?” Turquoise asked while changing.

“You like it? we came up with it after seeing how you looked like a trail of fire with that red hair of yours and your speed,” Cloudchaser said.

“I love it,” Turquoise said.

“Just be careful out there some of these ladies are big and jacked so don’t let them touch you,” Serena said to Turquoise.

“Not a problem,” Turquoise said. The girls practiced for a good hour before it was game time. As soon as both teams sat on their respective benches an announcer came up and spoke.

“Welcome ladies and gentlemen to tonight’s qualifiers,” The announcer said before continuing. “We have sixteen teams entering the tournament tonight and only eight of them will move on to the next round so first up from Equine County are the Canterlot Harpies. The crowd went wild for Turquoise and her friends as the spotlight shined on them. “And their opponents from the city of Sacramento are the Sacramento Vipers. The light shined on a team of women that were more jacked than any of the harpies were including Gilda.

“Why did we have to get those amazons right off the fricking bat?” Serena said as if it was the worst-case scenario. Serena called for a huddle. “We are up against some serious muscle out there.

“Any ideas on what we should do?” Lyra asked.

“All I can say is try not to get hurt too much because all three of us blockers combined can’t stop them,” Serena said.

“Maybe we don’t need to stop them just stall them,” Turquoise said.

“And how are we going to do that?” Cloudchaser asked. Turquoise noticed that their opponents may have a strong upper body but their lower body was weak.

“We knock them off balance,” Turquoise said.

“Oh I get it they have chicken legs,” Lyra said.

“Exactly, so a strong enough push should be enough,” Turquoise said.

“Now that sounds like something I can get behind,” Gilda said. Once they broke the huddle both teams got into position. As soon as the starting signal went off the girls were off. After rounding the first curve a free for all brawl between the blockers and pivots broke out and Turquoise managed to snag the first four points of the game putting the harpies in the lead. The other team’s jammer was tempted to just trip Turquoise up but went against it since she already had a history of foals against her meaning one more would mean she and her whole team would be disqualified. The match went on with the vipers taking the lead and the harpies taking it back until the final whistle which ended with the harpies winning 30 to 26.

“We did it,” Serena said joyfully.

“We sure did,” Turquoise said. The rest of the matches went by quickly and without too much incident except for one where one team was able to win by paying the ref off to disregard any foul play they committed.

“We should go beat those girls up right now,” Gilda said practically seeing red until Turquoise and Serena stopped her.

“Stop you brainless fool don’t you see what they are trying to do,” Serena said.

“That’s right they are trying to bait you into doing that exact thing to get us disqualified,” Turquoise said. Little did anyone know someone watching from the stands had the exact idea Gilda did. Turquoise and the girls all left to rest up for the finals tomorrow. Meanwhile, someone covered in all black including a ski mask and shades waited for the five cheaters to come out. As soon as the team who cheated came out the mystery person made their move.

“All right you vile cheaters it’s time for some retribution,” The person said in a deep voice indicating they were male.

“And just what can you do about it string bean?” The leader said mockingly since this person did not look very strong compared to them which made them all laugh. Suddenly he pulled out a lead pipe and smashed one of the girl’s legs to the point of being unable to stand. “If it’s a fight you want then bring it. The other girls all ganged up on him until he unleashed some moves of his own while smashing their legs until they could not even stand let alone skate anymore. He called for an ambulance and after hanging up he spoke to them.

“Be grateful I’m leaving you girls with your lives. I could have easily gone for the base of your necks and killed you if I wanted to,” The mystery man said before taking off.

The next morning Turquoise woke up and got dressed. As soon as she went downstairs she saw her parents watching the news.

“ Late last night a group of five teenage girls was assaulted by a mystery man. We have an eyewitness who saw the incident from his car,” The anchor said before switching over to the reporter who was by the roller rink.

“Thank you Jane I’m standing here with the eyewitness. Sir can you tell the viewers what you witnessed last night,” The reporter asked.

“It was like something out of an outlaw movie. The mystery man said stuff about cheating and retribution and then bashed the girl’s legs in with a lead pipe. It was like watching mafia justice in person,” The man said.

“Do you have any idea as to why he would do such a thing?” The reporter asked.

“It must have had something to do with how these girls cheated during the final match of the qualifiers and the ref ignoring it all,” The man who was revealed to be a spectator said.

“Well there you have it viewers a perfect example of vigilante justice,” Jane said. “The police currently have no clues as to the identity of this mystery man is but have advised everyone to be careful since he might strike again. Bullet turned off the TV before stating his opinion on the matter.

“I say those girls got what they deserved,” Bullet said.

“How can you say something so awful?” Ruby asked.

“It’s called retribution dear. You want to play the bad guys then you better be ready to accept whatever grizzly fate awaits you,” Bullet said.

“What if that was our own daughter then how would you feel?” Ruby asked.

“You know as well as I do that Turquoise is a good girl and is smart enough to make the right decisions,” Bullet said.

“True,” Ruby said.

“Plus she has Dan to keep her on the right track,” Bullet said. Turquoise left to see Serena and the two discussed what was on the news.

“The quarter-finals are tonight so we have nothing to worry about as long as we follow the rules,” Serena said. Sometime later after assembling the team the girls decided to have lunch at KFC to fuel up for the finals. As soon as it was time to play the announcer took her position and read something on a piece of paper before getting to the pairings.

“Before we begin I just received a notice that due to being in the hospital and unable to skate the San Dimas Divas have been disqualified so the Hill Valley Vixens win by default,” The announcer said. The other three matches went by smoothly and fairly with the Harpies, Vixens, Queens, and Ravens moving on to the semi-finals. The next match was the Harpies vs the Vixens. This one was a neck and neck race until Turquoise managed to win the final points for her team.

“Nice work Turquoise,” Serena said.

“It wasn’t easy but that was a good match,” Turquoise said.

“I concur red those were some good moves,” A girl from the other team said.

“Thanks,” Turquoise said. The next match was just as exciting and ended with the Queens winning 34 to 26 against the Ravens. There was a half-hour intermission to give both of the final teams time to rest. Turquoise and the girls returned to the locker room to rest. The girls were rubbing their tired legs and arms.

“Is this normal for you girls?” Turquoise asked referring to how tired her legs were.

“Very normal,” Gilda said. Turquoise drank some water which managed to cool her down a little.

“So how good are the queens?” Turquoise asked.

“They are the circuit champions four years running now,” Gilda said.

“This is the second time we managed to get close to beating them in the three years we formed this team,” Lyra said.

“We lost last time because Gale could never keep up with their jammer,” Cloudchaser said.

“Well I’m here now and I will give it my best,” Turquoise said. The intermission was now over and it was time for the final match. As soon as both teams were seated the announcer took her spot.

“Ladies and Gentlemen it is now time for the final match, will the LA Queens continue to reign or will the Canterlot City Harpies snatch victory in their talons,” the announcer said. As soon as the match started The Blockers and Pivots were going at it while the jammers raced each other racking up points. Soon the scuffle ended and now it was a race to see who can cross the finish line first. Lyra held her leg out all of a sudden.

“Turquoise grab my leg we are doing the whip,” Lyra said. Turquoise grabbed on and was suddenly flung towards the finish line and passed the other team’s jammer along with their blockers. The final score was Harpies 32 Queens 29.

“And it’s over folks the Harpies win the championship,” The announcer said. The girls all held the trophy while having their pictures taken for the sports section. As for who keeps the trophy everyone agreed that Serena should have it since she was the one who formed this team. The girls decided to head to Aldini’s to celebrate.

“Heres to our victory tonight and for our new jammer,” Serena said.

“Here here,” All the girls said. The girls enjoyed the night with smiles and laughter.
