Chapter 3: Time Off

(Susie POV)

I grumbled as Jacob and I walked into the city. “We should be training?”

Jacob frowned “We have been training non-stop for an entire month, I am just asking for one day of relaxing. We might actually fit in here if we’re lucky, the people here seem nice.”

I frowned “I suppose.” Before we could say anything else, we heard the sound of something falling. We looked up and jumped catching a piano mid fall, we saw a grey skinned woman with wings being scowled at by several other members of her group. Her eyes were looking in different directions.

One of the men nodded “Thank you for catching that, we’ll take things from here. They other three flew off with the piano leaving the woman behind.”

The woman rubbed the back of her head “Thanks for catching it. If you didn’t I might have lost my job. I need this job, my little Dinky needs me.”

I smiled “My name is Susie and this is my brother Jacob.”

The woman smiled “I’m Ditzy Derpy Doo, some people also call me Muffins. Thanks for the help.”

I smiled “Maybe we could lunch after your done with your shift, we stay at the castle. Just ask for us and we’ll be there.” Derpy nodded with a smile before flying off, maybe Jacob was right. We could make some friends here. As we walked down through Arcanis, the state of the buildings started to decline.

We frowned as we saw a few men chasing after a woman, I grimaced rushing forward, knocking both of them out with a single chop to the back of their necks. The woman kept running, we dragged the two me back to the barracks. The guards took them to the dungeons after that.

We returned to the castle, we walked back onto the castle grounds. The guards let us pass, we headed to the castle mess hall. There were a few guards eating meals, we took a seat. We ordered some bacon and eggs.

While we waiting for our food, Derpy crashed into one of the walls.I rushed over to her and helped to her feet, she joined us at our table. I sighed “I don’t mean to be insensitive but could you explain what happened to your eyes.”

Jacob growled “You can’t just ask her that?”

I scowled back “I’d rather not leave the awkward question in the air, if we get it out of the way then we don’t have to think about anymore.”

Derpy nodded with a smile “I’ll explain, when I was younger I didn’t have this condition but during a race I got involved in a major crash. Even since then my eyesight has been messed up and it affected my flying badly. My parents cast me after that, they said ‘There is no room for a Sky Warden who can’t fly properly.’ Ever since then doing everything was hard.”

I gritted my teeth before taking a deep breath. I turned to Derpy “Come with me, I have some very big questions to ask some very important ponies and I need you to follow me.”

Derpy smiled “Okay.” We headed through the castle my brother following behind, soon we arrived at the door to the throne room.

The guards in front of the room pointed their weapon at me “The Princesses are in the middle of attending court, we can’t allow you to pass!” I was not dealing with this waste of time, I clapped my hand together lightly sending a shockwave sending the guards flying through one door and out the other.

Jacob shouted at me “What are you doing!”

I gritted my teeth “What I believe is right!”

I stormed into the throne room, the nobles glared at me “What do reason do you have to come in here and interrupt our important business!”

I gestured for Derpy to come in here, she nervously entered. I growled “Why is there no system supporting those who suffer from disabilities! Derpy is suffering from a disability that has plagued her since she was a child and no-one has helped her! Belittling her for something she had no control over!”

The noble growled “That is not…”

A blond haired man stepped forward in fine dress stepped forward “I disagree, those who are suffering from disabilities should get help.” He stepped over to her and frowned, observing her eyes as she tried to orientate them. He grimaced “Strabismus, a severe case of it too. Likely caused by a terrible crash, living in the Cloud Citadel of Windhammer would leave them unable to function. Sky Wardens don’t tolerate weakness and anyone who did would be quickly cast out.”

One of the other nobles frowned “Prince Blueblood, how do you know such things?”

Blueblood frowned “I have made several visits to the Citadel using a cloud-walking spell for diplomatic purposes and to put out fires. Usually by entering duels with their leaders. You learn a lot about a warrior society by fighting them, they tend to be more loose lipped in the heat of battle. I also studied a great deal of medical magic in Celestia’s School for the Magically Gifted, I am currently writing my original thesis for my doctorate.”

Celestia smiled “Well I’m grateful for such matters to brought to my attention, I believe I will have to end court early to start writing out the new regulations. I will get to anything that needs to be addressed tomorrow.” The nobles all grumbled filing out of the room, the common ponies bowing politely before leaving.

We left alongside the Princess, Derpy and Blueblood behind us. Celestia whispered “Thanks for the interruption, those nobles were being especially obnoxious today. Also their demands were ten times as outrageous than usual.”

I grinned “Glad to help Princess.” As we separated from the Princess “Maybe taking a day off once in a blue moon is fun.” We turned around to see that Blueblood and Derpy were having a passionate discussion about something, we shrugged leaving them to their own devices.

Author's Note

I actually had to some research to figure out what Strabismus was.
