It's been over a decade since Princess Twilight Sparkle and all her friends have passed. Since then, alicorns have become more common over time. So common in fact, that there's a school for all the young princes and princesses called Royal Academy. Inside a specific dorm, however, was a young cyan alicorn with pink and yellow hair named...
"SPARK! WAKE UP! YOU'RE LATE FOR SCHOOL!"
"H-Huh? What?"
My best friend, Everest, was standing at the doorway looking very annoyed. Everest has a white coat with a very light blue mane and tail. I looked at her drowsily before looking at the time, which read 8:30 AM.
"Shoot! I'm late for school!" I yell as I jump out of bed and run into the bathroom.
I brush my teeth and take a quick shower, before drying my hair and styling it into the usual pigtails I wear. I then grab my pink and purple bracelets and put them on my legs. Putting on my tiara, I look over at Everest with a smirk on my face.
"10 minutes! That's a new record!" I say.
"Spark, you really have to stop waking up late!" Everest starts.
I groan. It's time for Everest's daily lecture on how waking up late affects my schedule. I tune her out as I think about what we're gonna be doing today. Was it proper posture or how to pour tea? It doesn't matter cuz I know I'll fail anyway.
"Now that we got that out of the way," Everest finishes. "Last one, there is a rotten egg!"
She starts to run off, leaving me in the dust. "Oh no you don't!" I giggle, chasing after her.
As I catch up with Everest, I bump into a certain someone. He has grey fur with dark blue hair and a streak of light blue in his mane and tail.
"My aplogi- oh it's you," Crescent says. "You really couldn't watch where you're going?!"
I roll my eyes. "Well, I'm sorry! But I was in the middle of a race which I'm going to lose now! So much for that winning streak..."
"Ugh, was it your daily racing between you and Everest?" he asks.
"As a matter of fact, it was! Now my 5-day winning streak is gone!" I grumble.
"Why do keep mentioning your winning streak?"
"Because! It's very important to me!"
Crescent groans. "Whatever! I'll see you in class."
And with that, Crescent walks off, leaving me annoyed. I run to my first class and see Everest waiting in her seat with a smug look on her face.
"What took you so long, Sparkles?" Everest says.
"I ran into you-know-who..." I grumble.
"Crescent?"
"Yep. Thanks to him, I lost my winning streak!"
"Aww, c'mon Spark! He's not that bad..."
"NOT THAT BAD?! HE'S THE ABSOLUTE WORST!" I shriek.
The room goes silent as I feel everypony's eyes look at me. Since I'm already used to it, I sigh and continue talking to Everest.
"Spark, you literally have every single class with him. Excluding this one." Everest says.
I groan as I slump in my seat. It's true. I have every single class with Crescent except 1st period. The bell rings as class begins.
"Good morning class!" Ms. B says.
"Good morning Ms. B!" our class choruses.
"Let's get on with today's lesson, shall we?"
The class starts writing notes in their notebook as Ms. B begins lecturing us or something like that. I, on the other hoof, snuck my diary into class, like I always do. Usually at this point in the morning, I would write about how I feel about class but on days like these when I see Crescent in the hallways, I obviously have to write about that encounter.
'Hey Diary! Writing in class again today! Guess who I saw in the hallways today. You guessed it. Crescent. You'll never believe what he did today. He ruined my 5-day winning streak! It's like he wanted to piss me off today! I hate him so much! He'll never leave me alone! I-'
"Spark."
"Huh? What?"
I look up and see Ms. B looking at me with a stern look on her face.
'Uh oh...'
"What is the first step on how to greet somepony properly?" she asks.
"Uhh. You greet them?" I answer, acting like that's a stupid question.
"Well yes. But how?"
I shrug my shoulders and go back to writing in my diary. Ms. B gives an exasperated sigh and snatches my dairy using her magic. I groan and look at Ms. B again.
"You'll get this back after class. Now, can somepony tell me the answer?"
I slump in my seat feeling even more annoyed as ever. Why can't the world just leave me alone?
At last, class finally ends and I walk up to Ms. B's desk to grab my diary.
"Ahh Spark. I assume you want your diary back?" Ms. B asks.
I nod my head, not being in the mood to talk. Ms. B hands me back my diary but not after telling me off about not focusing and stuff. I walk out of the classroom with Everest waiting for me.
"I hate everypony..." I mumble.
"Aww Sparkles! You don't mean that! Now let's go! It's time for our next class anyway." Everest says, trying to get my mind off of it.
"You mean 'time to be miserable for the rest of the day while Crescent teases me'?"
As if on cue, we hear a certain somepony's voice.
"Hey 'Sparkles'!"
I groan in annoyance while Everest tenses up, feeling all her efforts of cheering me up go to waste.
"Hi Crescent." I mumble.
"Did you get in trouble for bringing your diary again? Ha! Never gets old!" Crescent laughs.
"Knock it off Crescent. Cut her some slack, will ya?" Everest says, defending me.
"Let it go, Ev." I sigh.
"What's wrong Sparky Warky?" Crescent continues.
"Nothing. Just annoyed." I say, walking toward my next class.
"You do know we have to walk in the same direction? Right?" Crescent asks, following me.
I ignore him and continue to walk to my destination. Crescent continues to blab on and on about how bad I'm gonna do today and everyday while Everest is trying hard not to snap at him.
"I take back what I said about Crescent not being as bad as you think..." Everest whispers.
I snort. "Huh. Took ya long enough."
As we all approach our next class, I see balance beams and instantly know what we're doing today.
"Oh no..." I say.
"Oh yes." Crescent says, smirking at me. "The Perfect Posture Test."
"Oh you've got to be kidding me." I mutter. "A test?!"
Everest nods hesitantly. "Yeah. Test..."
I sigh as we enter the studio. There we see Mrs. Rose setting the students up. She smiles at Crescent and Everest but it falters a little when she looks at me.
"Hello students! I do hope you prepared for the test today." Mrs. Rose says.
"How do you prepare for the PPT anyway? Just find something to balance on and walk on it?" I ask.
"Well you-" Crescent starts.
"That was a rhetorical question, Crescent." I cut off.
"That's not how rhetorical questions work." Crescent corrects.
"Whatever." I say, rolling my eyes.
Mrs. Rose claps her hooves to get our attention. "Alright class. Get on your balance beams! We're about to begin."
I get on a balance beam with Everest to my right and unfortunately, Crescent to my left. 'Oh for Celestia's sake...'
"Alright class. You may begin." Mrs. Rose announces.
The class starts walking on their balance beams, trying to make it to the end without falling. For the first time, I actually feel like I'm going to pass. I'm almost at the end. I can taste it. Then all of a sudden, I hear an air horn followed by Mrs. Rose yelling 30 seconds left. I yelp and jump causing myself to shoot a beam of magic and lose balance.
"That can't be good..."
The beam of magic hits the fire sprinkler on the ceiling and triggers it, causing water to spew all over the room. Mrs. Rose manages to turn the fire sprinkler off and everyone in the room glares at me, except for Everest, who looks rather concerned and worried. Okay I'll admit. I've done some pretty embarrassing things in the past but this has got to be the worst out of all of them. I end up running out of the studio, still soaking wet, with Everest calling out after me. I run all the way to my dorm and flop down on my bed. I hear somepony else enter my dorm and I can only assume that it's Everest.
"Spark..." Everest starts.
"You know I usually don't care about the stares in the room or if I mess up on something. But this... This hits rock bottom for most embarrassing things I've ever done." I say, my voice muffled due to my face being in a pillow.
"Sparkles, it could've happened to anypony." Everest says, trying to be optimistic.
"But that one pony had to be me..." I sigh. "I mean, how could anypony forget the airhorn?!"
"Spark, come on. I'm supposed to take you to the office..."
"I'll just go myself. You can go back to class."
"But-"
"I said I'll be fine, Ev. You just go." I say.
"O-Okay..." she says hesitantly.
Everest leaves the room while I haul myself out of bed. I dry my mane and tail after combing it out a little and head to the office. More specifically, the dean's office.
"We meet again, Spark." Mr. Windsor says as I enter his office.
"Thought you would've warmed up to me by now." I mutter.
"Oh I have. I have a special seat reserved just for you." he says.
I look around and see a chair embroidered with my name on it. I sit on it and look down. Suddenly, the floor seems very interesting.
"Spark. This is the 7th time this month that you've had to come into my office." Mr. Windsor starts.
I sigh and roll my eyes. He's makes this speech every time I get in trouble.
"You know what? Save the speech. I've heard it a bunch of times already." I say, standing up and walking toward the door. "Oh and one thing. Try and be more original."
With that, I walk out of the office, leaving Mr. Windsor in shock. I go back to my dorm room, flop on my bed, and fall asleep, not caring about the rest of my classes.
I wake up in the middle of the night and fail miserably to go back to sleep.
'I'm tired of being a princess! Everypony thinks it's amazing to be royalty! In reality, everypony expects so much from you and you let them down. Sometimes I wish I could just explore without a care in the world. That's it! I could just run away! Why didn't I think of that before?'
I hop out of bed and quietly start packing a bindle, which ends up being way more than I thought it would. The last thing I decide to take with me is a picture of me and Everest. I'm gonna miss her. Who knows? Maybe we'll meet up someday. I quickly write a note and place it on my bed.
"Now to sneak past the guards..."
I quietly fly over all the guards, who are all doing an awful job. Most of them are either talking or asleep. I tiptoe over to the door and look around before quietly slipping out of the school. I exhale the breath I've been holding in and inhale that fresh air.
"Smells like freedom." I whisper to myself.
I fly outside the perimeter of the school to try and find a place to hide out.
Crescent's POV
I head into the kitchen to grab a glass of water when I see Spark in the hallway. I dive behind the kitchen counter and peek out from behind it. I see her looking around and exiting the school.
"Where is she going?" I whisper to nopony in particular.
I decide to quietly follow her and find out what she's doing. "This is gonna be fun..." I mumble unhappily.
And with that, I head out into the cool night sky to fly after Spark.

Spark's POV
After a couple minutes of flying, I finally find a small forest I can hide out in. I decide to land and go on hoof the rest of the way. Lowers my chance of being caught anyway. I trek through the forest for Celestia knows how long, feeling very sleepy. All of a sudden, I hear a tree branch snap, making me stop in my tracks. I'm debating whether or not I'm just hearing things due to my lack of sleep. But then I hear leaves rustling. I'm not hearing things...
"Who's there?" I call out.
The sound gets louder and I eventually find the courage to attack whatever is sneaking up on me. I use my magic to pick up a stick and let out a battle cry as I squeeze my eyes shut and attack the creature.
"Oww!" the creature whines.
I open my eyes and use a light spell to see what I hit. More like who...
"Crescent?!" I shriek.
Sitting in front of me is Crescent, who is rubbing his forehead and looks up at me annoyingly.
"Hey Spark." he grumbles.
"What are you doing here?!" I hiss.
"Following you! What do you think?!" he hisses back.
"Well if you were trying to sneak up on me, you weren't doing a very good job." I snarl at him.
"I wasn't trying to sneak up on you! I just said I was following you!" he argues.
I roll my eyes and Crescent lowers his hoof from his forehead. He has a cut that's covered by his mane. I make him sit back down as he starts to stand up. He looks up at me confused as I set my bindle on the ground and untie it, taking out the mini first aid kit I packed. Moving Crescent's hair out of the way, I disinfect the cut and cover it with a bandage.
"There." I say, a little happy that my first aid skills came to use.
Crescent looks amazed but only for a second. His face goes back to being all serious and whatnot as he realizes the task at hoof.
"Why are you out here in the middle of the night?" he finally asks.
"Was running away." I say, continuing to walk again.
I hear Crescent get up and start following me. "R-Run away?! Are you insane?!"
"Nah. I was getting tired."
"Of what?"
"You're a princess. You gotta do this right. Blah, Blah, Blah." I say mockingly.
I could've sworn I heard Crescent chuckle a little. We walk in silence for a while until Crescent breaks it.
"So what now? Do you have a certain destination in mind?" he asks.
"Nope."
"Wait, Wait, Wait. I'm sorry. Did... Did you just say you don't have anywhere you plan to go?"
"Mhm." I nod.
Crescent takes a deep breath and tries not to snap. He ends up failing miserably and starts telling me all the things I'm doing wrong. Pissing him off is one of my favorite things to do. Though it can get annoying after some time.
"Okay! I get it! I'm doing a lot of things wrong, according to you." I grumble. "I guess a destination I have in mind is a small village or something. I dunno."
Crescent casts a spell of some sort and a magical arrow now hovers over the both of us.
"I located a village nearby!" Crescent starts.
"Well let's go then!" I say.
"But... it's gonna take a day or two to get there though." Crescent finishes glumly.
"And? I really don't see the problem here. Now c'mon! Stop being a slowpoke!"
Crescent sighs and catches up with me as we start to make our way towards the village.
"Ugh! We've been walking forever!" Crescent whines.
"We've literally been walking for 1 hour..." I say.
"Like I said. For-e-ver! I'm probably gonna pass out!"
I groan and roll my eyes. "Stop being over dramatic! You gonna live!"
All of a sudden a beam of light shines in my eyes causing me to flinch and squeeze my eyes shut. After a while, I blink a couple of times to restore my vision.
"Aw come on! We've been up all night?!" Crescent whines.
"Yeah. I guess we have." I say, yawning.
"I really think we should get some sleep." Crescent says.
"Nuh uh. We're gonna keep going."
"But-"
"No buts! You decided to follow me when I decided to run away. So now you play by my rules."
"Ughhh. Fine. Whatever."
Everest's POV
I run down the hallway all the way to Spark's room expecting her to still be sleeping. I bust open the door and realize Spark's not in bed. That's weird. I was gonna give her a gift, which is an alarm clock, so she won't be late all the time.
"Sparkles? Where are you?" I call out.
I look around her room and find a note on her bed. I pick it up and read it out loud.
"To whoever it may concern (hopefully Everest),
I ran away. Don't look for me.
Signed, Spark."
Some goodbye note that was. I immediately march over to Mr. Windsor's office and slam the note on his desk. He reads the note and chuckles.
"Well that's one less student I have to deal with so I don't really see a problem here."
I charge my horn up and point it at Mr. Windsor, who backs up in his chair in fear.
"My best friend ran away and you don't care?! One of the students that you're responsible for?! What would her parents think, huh?! As a princess, I demand that we cast a search party for Spark. Now."
"Y-Yes princess. Right away princess."
All of a sudden, a male alicorn with a yellow coat with a cyanish mane bursts into the office. I stop pointing my horn at Mr. Windsor and look at the alicorn.
"P-Prince Brisk. What can I do for you?" Mr. Windsor asks, clearing his throat.
"Crescent's not in his room. Or anywhere else in the school." he says. "Oh hi Everest!"
I look down blushing and wave. "Hi."
Mr. Windsor looks at Brisk like he's crazy.
"Crescent?! My star student?! This will not stand! I'm calling a search party for Crescent!"
I raise my eyebrow and clear my throat.
"And Spark." I say.
"And Spark." Mr. Windsor repeats.
Brisk looks at me. "Spark's missing too?"
I nod my head. "She wasn't in bed and I found this note."
I show the note to Brisk and he gasps. "She ran away?!"
"Mhm! Wait... This may be a crazy idea but... what if Crescent went with her?"
"Crescent?! Go with Spark?! You're kidding!" Mr. Windsor laughs.
Brisk glares at Mr. Windsor which shuts him up. He looks back at me and smiles.
"You may be onto something Everest... What if for some reason Crescent saw Spark sneak out?"
"Oh yeah! He always goes late at night to get a glass of water! Maybe at that time he saw Spark and decided to follow her!"
"Exactly! So all we have to do is find Spark and hope that Crescent is with her!"
Mr. Windsor clears his throat and sighs. "If you two are so sure about this, you two can lead the search party."
"Really?!" I squeal. "That'd be great!"
"With the help of the royal guards of course." Mr. Windsor adds.
Of course there had to be a downside to this. Everypony, except the staff, knows that the guards suck at their job. Brisk sighs and nods his head so I do the same.
"Very well then. Now leave me be."
And with that, Mr. Windsor kicks both me and Brisk out of his office.
"Ugh. That guy's the worse..." I grumble.
"Tell me about it..." Brisk mutters.
He grabs my hoof and helps me up. I try to hide the redness of my cheeks as Brisk smirks at me.
"So what's the plan?" he asks.
"Plan?"
"To find Spark and Crescent."
"Well... We have to wait for now but I do have a few plans up my sleeve..."
Crescent's POV
"Now?"
"Nope."
"How about now?"
"I said no."
"Spark come on! We've been walking for 3 hours now! We need sleep!" I groan.
"More like you need sleep! I'm perfectly fine!"
Spark turns around and I flinch. She has bags under her eyes and her hair is all frazzled. Her eyes are bloodshot and half closed. That's the last straw.
"Okay. That's it. You're sleeping whether you like it or not." I say.
"No!"
"Yes!"
I use my magic and grab Spark by her tail. She tries to resist but is too tired to do anything. She eventually gives up and lets me drag her into a nearby cave. It seems to be empty. I sit down next to Spark as she groans.
"Do we have to?" she asks.
"Yes! What do you have against sleeping?" I ask.
"I dunno..."
I roll my eyes and use my magic to make a pillow and a blanket appear. I put the pillow down and urge Spark to lie on it. I expect her not to but she does it willingly. Surprisingly. I pull the blanket over her and within a matter of seconds, she's fast asleep. I sigh in relief and fall asleep next to Spark.
A couple hours later...
I wake up and rub my eyes. It's night time now. I look to my side and realize Spark is awake, drawing in the dirt with a stick. She's drawing herself without wings and a horn.
"How do you think ponies would treat us if we weren't royalty..?" she asks, looking at me.
"I don't know. Probably like your average everyday pony." I answer.
Spark lies next to me and is real close too. My cheeks flush a little but I quickly shake it off.
"We should get going. If we hurry, we should be at the village by morning." I say.
Spark nods and I poof away the pillow and blanket. Spark smirks and boops my nose while flying.
"You're it!"
She flies out of the cave quickly and I groan quickly flying after her. Our chase is awfully short due to Spark flying into a spider web. She crashes and starts flailing her legs while screaming.
"Get it off! Get it off!" she screeches.
I start laughing and help take the spider web off her face. She glares at me as I continue to laugh.
"T-That was hilarious!" I giggle.
"Shut up..." she mumbles, blushing in embarrassment.
"But y-you were screaming and r-rolling on the ground!"
Spark glares at me even harder. "You try being deathly afraid of spiders!"
"Whatever. I-I'm gonna remember that for the rest of my life!"
"Let's just keep going!" Spark yells, her cheeks even redder.
"Alright, Princess Deathly-Scared-Of-Spiders."
"Ughhh!"
Brisk's POV
The royal guards found a nice place to set up our campsite for the night. Everest and I sleep in one tent with two guards at the entrance. We've been looking for Crescent and Spark all day and found nothing. So Everest and I are currently planning in our tents.
"Ok so when all the guards fall asleep, we cut a hole through the back of the tent and escape through there. Then we fly off and look for them ourselves! Got it?" Everest says.
"Got it!" I reply. "I gotta admit, you're awesome at making plans!"
Everest looks down and smiles a little. "Thanks." she mumbles.
We both wait a few minutes before we hear snoring. Everest peeks out the tent and gives me the all clear. I use my magic and cut a hole big enough for us to crawl through. We go through the hole and quickly fly away from the campsite.
"Okay so... What now?" I ask.
"We find Spark and Crescent." Everest says plainly.
"Well obviously. But how?"
"I don't know. But no matter what, I'm going to find my best friend."
