"Isn't purebred just a fancy word for-"
“Granny,” Applejack asked. She helped the jar steady as Granny Smith poured the apple sauce inside. It slide inside nice and slow, just until it reached the dotted line on the outside of the jar. Then Granny carefully put the pot of apple sauce down and looked at Applejack.
“Applejack, can you get me another jar?” She asked. Applejack grabbed another jar from the stack of jars off to the side and slid it next to Granny who began pouring the apple sauce into the jar. The day began just like any old day at the Apple Farms. However, it would not end like any old day.
“Granny, ah’ve been thinkin’ about some things you say a lot lately,” Applejack began as Granny set down the pot. Applejack set another jar onto the counter.
“Well, ah say a lot of things so you’re gonna have to be specific about which one of those things it is ah’m saying,” Granny said as she set aside the empty pot of apple sauce. She reached over and grabbed another full pot and started to pour.
“You always say our family is purebred,” Applejack said as Granny poured the warm apple sauce into the jar. “Which is kinda weird because ah’ve only ever heard those fancy noble ponies in Canterlot use purebred to describe their families. We’re not elite, fancy Canterlot nobles so ah’m unsure why’d you’d use such a word, Granny.”
“Well, when was the last time ah used that word?” Granny asked, as she set down the pot again. She tapped her chin. “Can’t recall using it even once.”
“You use it just this morning, Granny,” Applejack said, as Granny walked around her and began to slowly count the jars on the other side. “You said our family should be proud for being the most purebred family in Equestria.”
“Ah did?” Granny asked, wheeling around in surprise. “Ah don’t remember that at all.”
Applejack sighed. “Never mind, Granny. It’s fine.”
“Ah’m surprised ah don’t remember. That’s unusual. Must be mah age,” Granny said shrugging and walked away. Applejack stared at the jars. They were all there and accounted for. She watched Granny walk away. Maybe Apple Bloom had the answers she was looking for.

“Apple Bloom?” Applejack called out, knocking on her sister’s door.
“Hey Applejack! What can ah do for ya?” Apple Bloom asked as she let her sister in. Applejack stared at the little potions set that Apple Bloom had going on in her room.
“Ah hope ah’m not interrupting ya,” Applejack said, gesturing at the potions she had scattered across the floor. This seems pretty important.”
“Nah, it’s just something ah’m working on,” Apple Bloom said.
“Well, Granny keeps saying that our family is purebred. Ah’ve only ever heard nobles from Canterlot use that word so ah was wondering if maybe you could whip up a potion that could let me figure this whole thing out,” Applejack said.
“Well, ah do have one,” Apple Bloom said. She rolled a small vial filled with a milky white substance to her. “It shows you what you want to know. Just make sure you’re focusing on that when you drink it, alright?”
“Huh. Didn’t know you could make stuff like that,” Applejack said.
“Actually, ah can’t,” Apple Bloom said sheepishly. “Ah got some from Zecora so ah can use them to learn to make other potions. The ingredients to make these are super expensive. But you can have mah spare!”
“Thanks Apple Bloom,” Applejack said.
“You might wanna take it while lying down. It kinda knocks you out,” Apple Bloom said.
“Got it,” Applejack replied with a nod.

After all the chores had been done and dinner had been eaten, Applejack settled down on her bed. She uncorked the bottle and immediately downed all of it. It was nice taste like her favorite zap apple jam. She focused all her thoughts on what Granny meant by purebred as she slipped into unconsciousness.

She awoke in front of a scene. A much younger Granny Smith was playing and racing a much younger Grand Pear around a small room. There were toys strewn everywhere. There were drawings on the side of the brick walls of childish drawings of ponies. There was only one door leading somewhere else and no windows. The two ran around in circles, chasing each other and laughing all the while.
Applejack was surprised. She knew the story of her parents, Pear Butter and Bright Mac. She knew that Grand Pear and Granny Smith had forbid their marriage. But what she hadn’t known was that the two knew each other as children. That was a surprise.
Suddenly the far door swung open. There was nothing on the other side of the door but pure black. A warm voice called out announcing dinner and the pair raced into the darkness.
Then the scene shifted. Applejack stood in front of dinner table. On each end of the table were an earth pony mare and stallion she didn’t recognize eating apple slices. But on the left side of the table, sitting side by side were Granny Smith and Grand Pear. Grand was poking at his apple slices but not really eating them while Granny Smith was wolfing down her share.
“Grand, you have to eat your apple slices,” The unknown stallion finally said. “That’s how you grow up big and strong.”
“I dislike apple slices. I would rather have pears.” Grand replied angrily.
“Well, you can’t always eat pears,” The stallion said. He glanced at the earth pony mare. “Banana Sugar, please say something to our son.”
Banana smiled at Grand. “If ya finish all your apple slices, ah’ll let ya have dried banana slices as dessert instead of our usual apple peels.”
“Really?” Grand looked up his eyes shining.
“Really?” The stallion asked. “Bribery?”
“Ya got a better idea, Round?” Banana asked with a glare. “Because ah don’t.”
“You know what, fine,” Round sighed. “I just don’t understand why Grand has zero appetite, but his sister does.”
Applejack felt her entire world stop. Did he say sister? That couldn’t have been right at all. She stared at the family. That shouldn’t have been right.
“His sister is recovering from an illness so she should be eating that much,” Banana argued as Granny began to scoop apples off her mother’s own plate. “Ideally, she should eat more to gain back all that lost weight.”
No, she had definitely said sister. Some part of her wanted to believe that Banana had meant adopted sister but sadly, Applejack could not believe that was the case. There were too many similarities between the whole family. Banana Sugar had Granny’s mane color in her mane with Grand’s coat color as her coat color. Round had Grand’s mane color as his mane and Granny’s coat color as his coat color. Round’s mane contained dark red stripes that Grand’s mane didn’t, however. Banana’s mane had yellow stripes in it as well. An odd addition that their children didn’t share. Still, she hadn’t wanted to believe it.
That meant that if this potion was correct, Granny Smith had been lying about the whole story involving how Pear Butter and Bright Mac met. She had to be because the only other option meant…
Applejack shook that thought from her head. Where was this story going?
The scene shifted to show an adult Grand Pear and Granny Smith hanging around inside of a bedroom. Granny Smith was sitting on one of the two beds in the room. Though the curtains were shut, light still came through them. Grand Pear was pacing across the floor of the room. Besides the two beds, only a single nightstand stood between them. There was a rug on the hardwood floor in front of the beds and a green soft looking chair in the corner.
Grand Pear occasionally glanced at Granny Smith as he paced across the room. She seemed calm as she watched him pace. Eventually he stopped and stared at her.
“What’s your opinion on this whole, mess.” He asked, staring at her.
“Well, ah’d like to hear yours first,” Granny replied calmly.
“Ok, so the information we gathered so far is as follows. We know that our parents, Banana Sugar and Round Pear are in fact cousins,” Grand Pear began. “There’s this tradition in our family of fruit farmers that you should marry within the family to keep the bloodline pure. It’s actually a unicorn tradition that was used to make sure fillies and colts inherited a certain type of magic power, but it somehow got picked up by our family.”
Granny Smith nodded. “That’s correct.”
“And according to that letter from our cousin Small Orange, we are expected to-” Grand Pear seemed to struggle to let out the words. “Keep up the tradition.”
“Our parents must not have wanted us to keep up the tradition, seeing as how they never told us about this. They even seemed thrilled that we had gotten coltfriends and fillyfriends back when we were younger. Ah think they wanted to keep us out of this mess,” Granny Smith said thoughtfully. “Not that there’s any way to know now seeing as how they’re…” She trailed off and stared at Grand sadly.
“I’m aware,” Grand said. “Now that they’re gone there’s nothing to stop the rest of our family from trying to contact us and… and…”
“Ah don’t think we should have to worry about them. Ah’ve never even met the rest of the family and there’s a good chance they wouldn’t come for us,” Granny glanced at the letter. “But ah’ve never heard of Small Orange until three days ago so ah don’t know, really.”
Grand frowned. “I have an idea.”
“Well, let’s hear it,”
“Let’s send the letter back out saying that we’re together. That way they’ll get off our backs and we can continue with our lives,” Grand said.
Granny Smith made a face. “Ugh, that’s disgusting.” She made a gaging noise. “Whatever works, ah suppose.”
“Whatever works,” Grand smiled. He pulled out an empty sheet of paper, a quill, and a jar of ink from the nightstand. “I know just what to say.”
Applejack barely had time to collect her thoughts before the scene changed again. This time Grand Pear stood in an open field next to a mare. There were many ponies all around, some of them Applejack recognized as relatives. Grand Pear laughed at a joke the mare had made, one that Applejack didn’t quite catch. She immediately tuned into their conversation, wanting to see how this would all play out.
“Yeah, that was pretty funny, Small Orange,” Grand Pear said with a smile. Small had a light pink coat and a curly orange mane and tail. Her eyes were orange, and her cutie mark were three small oranges in a line.
“Thank you,” she said quietly. “I’m just glad you actually came to the family gathering to hear it. I’ve been working on that bit for quite some time.” Her quiet voice reminded Applejack of Fluttershy.
“Yeah, I didn’t know if Granny Smith and I were going to go,” Grand said.
“I heard a rumor from Piping Pear that your relationship with her hit a rough patch,” Small said. “You know, you’ve always been cute to me.” She reached out and rubbed his leg a little bit. “Hit me up if you ever break up.”
After Small Orange wandered away, Grand sighed. “She has no tact, that one.”
Grand Pear began to walk across the field. He smiled and waved at many ponies but kept walking until he found Granny Smith talking to a blue stallion. The moment he walked over; the blue stallion pointed at him.
“You,” he said sternly. “Kiss her.” He pointed at Granny Smith.
The pair looked at him, bewildered. “What?” They both asked.
“Kiss her,” The stallion repeated.
“Why would I do that?” Grand Pear asked.
“Because Bold Blueberry doesn’t believe we’re actually dating,” Granny Smith said calmly. “So, he wants us to kiss as proof.”
“This is preposterous! I shouldn’t have to anything of that sort!” Grand protested. Granny put her hoof on his side.
“It’s fine.”
“Wait what?” Grand looked at Granny Smith in surprise and it was in that opening that she briefly and swiftly kissed him. They ended up holding the kiss for a moment longer than Applejack thought they would. When they broke up, Granny looked at Bold in defiance. Grand only stared at Granny though Applejack thought something about how he looked at her didn’t seem quite right.
“Now you get out of here before ah tell Golden Apple that you were harassing us,” Granny threatened. “And you and ah both know ya don’t want Golden to kick your ass.”
Bold had a brief look of fear before he turned tail and ran. Granny Smith glanced at Grand.
“Let’s get out of here.”
“You don’t have to tell me twice!” Grand said and began to follow Granny as the pair began to leave.
The scene shifted again but the process was much slower than before giving Applejack some breather room to think.
Applejack didn’t want to believe that it was true. Knowing that her mother and father were cousins hit her harder than expected. Clearly Granny Smith didn’t want her falling down the same path as the rest of her disgusting family because she never encouraged Applejack to go after Big Mac, but she never had the awful pleasure of meeting a family member that encouraged it either. Perhaps the idea fell out of the favor at some point?
Applejack knew what Granny Smith meant by purebred now. By purebred, she meant a pure bloodline and by a pure bloodline she’d meant this. This horribleness that befell her family for quite some time.
She look around at the same she was in. There really didn’t seem to be any sort of exit to this place. Who knew how long this story was going to go on for?
“Ah knew ah should’ve asked Apple Bloom about that,” Applejack said regretfully. Maybe if she just kept walking forward, she would end up getting out of there. She walked forward, towards nowhere in particular until the wrong step caused her to fall forward and down through nothingness until she hit something solid somewhere at the bottom.
When she opened her eyes, she was back in the small bedroom from before. But this time was different. She couldn’t move. She could only watch as Grand Pear stood nervously across from her.
“We need to talk,” He finally stated after a moment of silence.
“Agreed,” Applejack heard those words come out of her mouth, but it was not her voice. It was Granny Smith’s voice. She realized the situation, that she had somehow ended up in Granny Smith’s body and struggled in a panic. She had to get out of there before something else happened.
“When we kissed at the family gathering I…” Grand Pear seemed to hesitate for some reason. Applejack stopped her struggling. It was no use. Anyways.
“I felt amazing,” Grand Pear finally said. “It was the best kiss I’d ever had. I know this sounds crazy, but it was better than my first kiss with Square Rope.”
Applejack did think that he was crazy. Unfortunately, Granny Smith did not agree.
“You’re not crazy because ah feel the same way,” Granny Smith admitted. “It felt like fireworks. But ah know ah shouldn’t feel that way.”
They sat in silence for a moment before Grand Pear spoke up.
“Do you want to do something about that?” Grand asked.
“Yes, ah would like that very much.”
Before Applejack knew it, Grand Pear was on top of her, kissing her. She didn’t know the potion would have led to her experiencing a sex act between Grand Pear and Granny Smith.
