Dr. Moon
Starting From Zero
Load Full StoryNext ChapterInside the bedroom of a suburban home was a girl with cream-colored skin, dark purple eyes with glasses, Red hair with purple and violets streaks, wearing a black sweater with a lab coat and blue jeans. This girl was called Moondancer and she was a scientist. At the moment she was packing a suitcase for a family vacation. As she was packing she heard her mom calling from downstairs.
“Moondancer, are you finished packing yet?” Moondancer’s mom shouted.
“Almost mom,” Moondancer shouted back. After she finished packing she made sure she had everything. “Let's see clothes, check, books, check, science gear, check. As soon as Moondancer made sure she had everything she went downstairs with her luggage. As soon as she got downstairs she saw that her parents and sister were all packed.
“You girls ready for the best cruise of your lives?” Moondancer’s dad asked.
“I sure am,” Moondancer said.
“So am I,” Moondancer’s sister said.
“Before we go did everyone remember to take their motion-sickness meds?” Moondancer’s mom asked.
“I took mine,” Moondancer said.
“So did I,” Moondancer’s Sister said.
“Me too,” Moondancer’s dad said.
“Then let's get going,” Moondancer’s mom said before loading their luggage into the car. As soon as they were on the road it was a good forty-five minutes to the port. Moondancer decided to pass the time by reading her biography of Nikola Tesla. Moondancer’s parents were not pleased to see her doing this.
“We wish you would put the books down every once in a while and learn to get out there and live life to the fullest,” Moondancer’s mom said.
“You two know I’m not the athletic type and besides knowledge is more important than anything,” Moondancer said.
“Your right knowledge is important there are no arguments there but there is a lot more to life than books and science,” Moondancer’s dad said.
“Such as?” Moondancer asked.
“Such as traveling to another country and trying everything they have to offer like we are going to do in the Bahamas,” Moondancer’s Mom said.
“Well it's still a long way from California and besides there is not much to see in the middle of the ocean,” Moondancer’s sister said.
“Actually the sea has many different forms of sea life such as Selachimorpha and Cetacea,” Moondancer said which confused her family. “Sharks and whales. Before the conversation could continue they arrived at the port where a giant cruise ship with the words SS Borealis on it was docked. As soon as everyone unloaded their luggage they walked towards the ship. Before they could board they had to show the crewman their boarding passes which were for a first-class cabin. The family was shown to their first-class cabin which had everything you would expect to find in first class. As soon as everyone was unpacked they were all required to report to the main deck for the mandatory safety demonstration before they set sail. After the crew finished explaining everything the anchor has raised and the ship set off on the long voyage to its destination. Moondancer decided to return to the room and just read while her sister and parents enjoyed the activities the cruise had to offer. The ship has been moving for about eight hours which Moondancer managed to burn through all the books she packed on this journey. She decided to see how her family was doing. As soon as she got to the main deck she noticed that her family was waiting for her.
“I see someone has finally decided to come join us,” Moondancer’s mom said.
“I’m out of reading material so I figured why not,” Moondancer said. But before they could even think of doing something a huge storm was coming up on the horizon which had everyone panicked. Suddenly the waves began to get violent and became nine-foot waves which began to rock the boat. Normally the crew would be calmly guiding everyone to the lifeboats but with the current size of the waves, it would be more of a death sentence.
“How can things get any worse?” Moondancer’s sister Asked which caused Moondancer to slap her own forehead.
“Never ask that question,” Moondancer said before a massive thunderstorm started and caused the waves to increase in size all the way to twenty feet. The passengers were really starting to panic as the ship suddenly scrapped against a bunch of reefs which damaged the haul and caused it to take on water. Suddenly the captain gave the order for everyone to head for the lifeboats. People were in such a panic that what was once a pleasure cruise turned into a fight for survival. Moondancer’s family made it but Moondancer didn't make it because a man in a suit shoved her out of the way and stole her spot.
“Hey jerk that was my oldest daughter you just shoved,” Moondancer’s dad said.
“Piss off you wanker it's every bloke for themselves,” The man said in a British accent.
“That's it time for you to die,” Moondancer’s dad said as he and the British jerk got into a fight which knocked the Polley and lowered the boat before anyone else could board which left Moondancer stuck on the sinking ship along with the other passengers who could not make it. Suddenly the ship was smashed up by the waves which sunk and destroyed it with some passengers surviving while others died.
Days later Moondancer woke up on the beach of some island with nothing but the tattered clothes on her back.
“I’m alive?” Moondancer asked herself. She then began to think and decided to look for any signs of people living on the island before assuming the worst. She went into the jungle and noticed a lot of the trees were cut down which was a good sign. As she went deeper she soon came across a bridge that was guarded by two buff women with tan skin wearing what looked like fur tops and skirts. As soon as they saw her the two women pointed their stone-tipped spears at Moondancer.
“Halt,” The two women said in unison.
“I’m unarmed,” Moondancer said trying to convince them to lower their spears. Suddenly after seeing her Glasses their attitudes changed from hostile to intrigue.
“What are those over your eyes?” One of the women asked.
“What my glasses?” Moondancer asked in confusion.
“Glasses?” The other woman asked in confusion. Moondancer could tell the locals were not very bright since she had to try and explain Glasses to them.
“They help you see better when your eyesight is not so good,” Moondancer explained as simply as she could.
“Oh so they help cure the fuzzy sickness,” One of the women said.
“Something like that,” Moondancer said.
“Come the village empress will want to hear more,” One of the women said before opening the gate. Inside was a village full of huts made of palm trees and leaves which proved that these ladies lacked science in their civilization. Soon they arrived at what looked like a palace on top of a hill which must have been where the leader of this tribe was. As soon as they entered they were now in front of a woman with white skin, blue eyes, long flowing black hair, wearing a fur dress.
“Your majesty we found this outsider outside the gate,” One of the women said.
“I see that Gina but why did you and Kira bring them to me?” The Empress asked.
“Because we feel this outsider might be helpful to us,” Kira said.
“Is that so tell me outsider what is your name,” The Empress asked.
“I’m Moondancer,” Moondancer said.
“Now tell me why would you be of use to us?” The Empress asked.
“Because I noticed your village lacks any form of science,” Moondancer said.
“What is this science you speak of?” The Empress asked.
“Science is the culmination of human wisdom that was built up over two million years and it has given rise to many things to help aid us in survival and produce a lot of fun things as well,” Moondancer said. Little did they know a girl around Moondancer’s age was listening in on the conversation and then ran up to them.
“Please tell us more about it,” The girl asked.
“Sylvia, how long have you been eavesdropping on us?” The Empress asked.
“Just now and if what this person saids is true we need her,” Sylvia pleaded with her mom the empress.
“If everyone is so insistent on this then fine. show us some of this science you seem to be so proud of,” The Empress said.
“Gladly,” Moondance said before taking out her magnifying glass and catching the sun’s light which focused that light that shocked everyone.
“How are you doing that?” Sylvia said amazed by what she is seeing.
“This here is called a magnifying glass which uses a convex lens to make things look bigger and in this case focuses the sun’s light for pinpoint heating,” Moondancer explained.
“So cool,” Sylvia said even though she did not understand entirely what Moondancer said.
“I will admit that was impressive but how does it help us?” The Empress asked.
“That was just a demonstration but if you want to see more then why don’t we make a deal,” Moondancer said.
“Very well what are your terms?” The Empress asked.
“As you can tell I'm not from around here and I doubt anyone will be coming to save me so since your village is the closest thing to civilization on this island how about this? If you provide me with a place to stay I will use my vast knowledge of science to improve your lives,” Moondancer said.
“I’m afraid we can’t honor that request,” The Empress said.
“And why not?” Moondancer asked.
“Your an outsider so we have no reason to trust you so I’m afraid your just going to have to fend for yourself,” The Empress said before having Moondancer escorted out of the village. Moondancer went back to the beach and lay there trying to think of something.
Much later during the night Sylvia snuck out of the palace and left the village to find Moondancer.
“Sorry mom but this is for the benefit of our people even if you can’t see it,” Sylvia said to herself. She looked through the jungle but did not find her and then decided to check the beach. As soon as she got there she found Moondancer laying down. As soon as she saw her Moondancer was surprised.
“Sylvia, what are you doing here?” Moondancer asked.
“I snuck out because I believe you can help our people,” Sylvia said.
“I wish I could but since your mom declined my offer there is nothing I can do, besides without any materials or even a map of this island there is not much I can do,” Moondancer said.
“I can provide you something better than a map, I know this island like the back of my hand so If there is anything you need just tell me and I will help you find it,” Sylvia said. “And as for shelter, I might have just the thing.
“Lead the way,” Moondancer said. Sylvia lead Moondancer to a smaller clearing that was about five minutes east of the village gate. Inside that clearing was a hut made of the same materials as the ones in the village but not in good shape as indicated by the state of the lumber and leaves.
“It's not much but it's better than nothing,” Sylvia said.
“This will do,” Moondancer said thanking Sylvia.
“This hut belonged to the first settlers of Lycoris Island who built it for survival,” Sylvia said.
“Tell me about them,” Moondancer asked.
“You see 400 years ago this island was nothing but a massive untamed jungle it was considered uncharted so it had no name. Then one day a woman named Lilian Lycoris and her husband Jimmy Grant washed up on the shore of this island just like you did. Naturally, they survived by building this hut for shelter and living off the fruit on the trees. The people of my village are all descended from them,” Sylvia explained.
“What happened to them?” Moondancer asked.
“When their three daughters grew up and left to find men of their own Jimmy wanted to return home and see his family but Lillian became attached to this place and refused to leave so Jimmy built a raft and left. As for Lilian, she lived to the ripe old age of 89 and died of natural causes but not before her daughters returned to see her one final time,” Sylvia said.
“Speaking of men I noticed the villagers are all women. any reason why?” Moondancer asked.
“Jimmy never came back and the men the three daughters married were worse than scum so a law was declared that men are forbidden from setting foot on this island,” Sylvia said.
“If men are forbidden from coming here then how do you,” Moondancer asked before Sylvia cut her off like she knew where Moondancer was going with this question.
“Give Birth? We have this rite of passage where at the age of 18 we go to the prison on an island a little bit north of Lycoris Island where we have snu snu with one of the men we locked up there,” Sylvia said.
“I’m guessing Snu Snu means sex?” Moondancer asked.
“If that is what you call your mating ritual then yes,” Sylvia said. Before Sylvia and Moondancer could continue their Q&A session they both began to feel tired and decided to call it a night.
The next day Moondancer was ready to begin her plan to show the empress what the power of science can do.
“So what should we do first?” Sylvia asked.
“First thing is Calcium Carbonate,” Moondancer said.
“Calcium what?” Sylvia asked confused.
“Calcium Carbonate, at this stage it's essential for the first step to a technological civilization,” Moondancer explained.
“Ok, but what is it and how do we get it?” Sylvia asked.
“The best way would be to pulverize a bunch of seashells into powder,” Moondancer said.
“Leave it to me to gather the shells,” Sylvia said before running off towards the beach. While Sylvia was away Moondancer began gathering all the rocks in the clearing then began carving them down to make knives, hammers, and spears.
Stone tools acquired
Sylvia returned with about five baskets full of shells. “I got the shells now how are we going to pulverize them as you put it?
“With this,” Moondancer said while trying to lift the sledgehammer she made.
“Leave it to me,” Sylvia said before lifting the hammer like it barely weighed anything. She then began pounding the shells into powder which was placed in sacks made of animal pelts.
Calcium Carbonate Acquired
“Time to get excited, There are three super useful things you can do with it,” Moondancer began to explain. “First is agriculture, we can use it to blow away the hydrogen Ions in the soil which will be very helpful in farming.
“So your saying we can use this stuff to produce better crops?” Sylvia asked knowing somewhat what Moondancer was saying.
“Exactly by getting rid of the hydrogen Ions in the soil you can grow healthier crops,” Moondancer said.
“So cool what's the second use?” Sylvia asked.
“The second use is Construction,” Moondancer explained before lighting a fire beneath what looked like a small sewer pipe. “If you heat it up and mix it with sand you get mortar which is like a less sophisticated cement, We can use it to build houses and furnaces. Moondancer and Sylvia used the mortar to cover the rotting wood of the hut for support. “And third is Hygiene blend it with calcium Carbonate from Seaweed and blend it with oil. The reaction will create soap which is very essential to human survival since getting sick could mean game over. This small chunk is enough to eliminate harmful germs which is extremely helpful in a land with no doctors.
“Mom and the villagers have no clue what they are missing out on,” Sylvia said.
“They will find out in time but right now my plan is to win the villagers over one by one and hope the Empress will see the true power of science,” Moondancer said. With enough Calcium Carbonate collected Moondancer began thinking about what the next step should be. While she was thinking she noticed that her clothes were getting more worn which instantly gave her the idea for her next project. Sylvia returned to the village to bring Moondancer some pelts so she could make herself a new outfit. After some time Moondancer was now wearing a dress along with a fur-trim lab coat made of from the pelts that had the formula E+MC2 written in blood on the right side of the top. “Now that we have that crisis averted time to begin the real work.
