Dr. Moon
The First Project :Cure All Sulfa Drug
Previous ChapterNext ChapterA few days after Sylvia started helping Moondancer a very frightening turn of events occurred inside the palace. Sylvia’s older sister was in bed with a very bad cough and severe pain. The empress recognized this ailment as something that has claimed the lives of a good amount of her people over the years and was devastated to see one of her own children inflicted with it. Sylvia knew only one person who could help.
Meanwhile, with Moondancer she was busy making some upgrades to her hut by replacing the rotting leaves of her roof with a wooden one by cutting down some trees. As soon as she finished she looked very tired.
“I’m I the only one on this island who isn't practically a gorilla?” Moondancer asked herself sarcastically before Sylvia showed up.
“All the women on Lycoris Island are strong we are amazons after all,” Sylvia said. “But anyway we have a very serious problem.
“What’s the problem?” Moondancer asked.
“My sister has fallen ill and no one knows what to do,” Sylvia explained.
“I’m guessing you have no doctors in your village?” Moondancer asked.
“Whats a Doctor?” Sylvia asked.
“A specialist in the field of medicine which brings us to the first project of the kingdom of science,” Moondancer said while smiling wickedly.
“Which is?” Sylvia asked.
“Making an antibiotic, A wonder drug that will kill the hostile bacteria infecting our patient,” Moondancer said before going into the history behind it. “Since its discovery in the early twentieth century, it saved hundreds of millions of lives, we can’t do any blood tests and we don’t know what your sister is actually suffering from, But I’m sure it's worth trying anyway.
“So what do we need?” Sylvia asked while getting excited.
“Well we are basically missing everything so pay attention,” Moondancer said before drawing some stuff in the dirt. “There are two routes to making antibiotics, the biological route making penicillin from living things or the stone route making sulfa drugs from rocks.
“Living things? Rocks? How do you cure someone with those?” Sylvia asked.
“Penicillin which is made from green mold is more well known but I doubt we will find any on this island so that is out of the question,” Moondancer said before continuing. “If we take the stone route and make sulfa drugs we will need a ton of diligence and womanpower but even on this primitive island, we can make it happen.
“Then let's take the stone route,” Sylvia said stoically.
“You get the position we are in don’t you? None of us are gods or even geniuses, to be honest, we got to do this step by step, and like they say we gotta crawl before we can walk,” Moondancer said before drawing her scientific roadmap on the ground which listed the various things they needed along with illustrations of Moondancer holding an iron club at the start, Sylvia shooting electricity, the empress drinking some wine, Kira working at a sushi place which was meant to represent vinegar, Moondancer washing dishes, Gina sprinkling salt on some onigiri, A black and white pomeranian peeing on a lamppost, and the finished drug at the finish line. “All right the stone route it is, we will get each item one by one.
“I’m guessing this iron stuff is first, I don’t even know what that is, I have so much to learn,” Sylvia said.
“Iron is not particularly easy to come by,” Moondancer said.
“So what do we need to make Iron?” Sylvia asked.
“First we need black sand which is a mixture of magnetic minerals such as magnetite but to find that we need magnets,” Moondancer said. “If only I had a compass.
“Compass?” Sylvia asked confused.
“It's an extremely useful tool for navigating. It uses a magnetic needle to detect the earth’s magnetic field to always point true north,” Moondancer explained.
“Something like this?” Sylvia explained before filling a pot with water then placed a small black rock on a leaf in the center of the water. The rock moved the leaf around like the needle on a compass.
“That's a magnet,” Moondancer said impressed by the fact Sylvia had one but did not know what it was.
“Of course, you would know,” Sylvia said.
“This is good where did you find it?” Moondancer asked.
“I found it on top of that bald mountain over there,” Sylvia said while pointing to a mountain in the distance.
“Just how big is this island anyway?” Moondancer asked while they walked towards the village.
“No one really knows,” Sylvia said before the two of them entered the village under the watchful eyes of Kira and Gina. They soon arrived at a building that looked like a small shed. Inside the shed was various types of minerals and plants which really amazed Moondancer.
“No way, You actually collected all these minerals and plants?” Moondancer asked in shock and awe.
“I sure did, my mom didn't want any of it inside the palace so I had to keep all of it here,” Sylvia said as Moondancer examined everything.
“I can’t believe you got Galena, Lead has been acquired,” Moondancer said with joy while holding a grey rock.
“Your free to marvel at my vast collection anytime but right now time is of the essence,” Sylvia said before grabbing all the magnets she had.
“Just what are the two of you up to?” Kira asked before Moondancer had a wicked grin on her face.
“We are making Iron,” Moondancer said which shocked them.
“I,” Kira said before Gina picked up the second half.
“Ron?” Gina asked.
“Help us out and I will show you,” Moondancer said.
“Very well but just know the empress told us to keep an eye on you so don’t pull anything,” Kira said.
“All right now that we have magnets let's head to the river,” Sylvia said leading the way while wearing a bikini made from animal pelts. The four girls trudged the river gathering tons of black sand which was just the first step to making Iron. Once they gathered enough of it they set the pots of it down by Moondancer’s hut.
Iron Sand Acquired
“We helped you gather your sand now can you tell us what your planning to do with this Iron Stuff?” Gina asked.
“I’m sure you heard about my sister right?” Sylvia asked.
“You mean Lucy? We heard she has fallen ill by that horrible disease,” Kira said.
“Well Moondancer is working on a cure for that disease,” Sylvia said.
“That's right and once you see what I got planned for this Iron we will be one step closer to modern civilization,” Moondancer said.
“So how does this sand become Iron?” Gina asked.
“We mix four parts of the sand to one part coal and bake it,” Moondancer said.
“That sounds easy enough,” Kira said.
“The bad news is it's much harder than it sounds, Nothing like making clay pots,” Moondancer said before continuing. “That will be our next problem to solve, wood can burn up to 700 degrees but iron making requires much higher temperatures we’re talking 1500 degrees or more.
“So how are we going to get it that hot? Is it even possible?” Sylvia asked.
“We gotta blow like hell,” Moondancer said while making a whistling face along with the whistle sound. Before they moved on Moondancer began crafting an Iron Making furnace with four bamboo tubes at the bottom which was where they would be blowing air into to heat it up. Next, she made four bellows out of bamboo and animal pelts. “Now that we have our furnace time to explain how we will reach 1500 degrees. We will be providing it with as much oxygen as we can with these bellows hopefully increasing the fire’s damage points from 700 to 1500.
“This thing blows air? I’m sure I can do that all on my own with a handy device like this,” Sylvia said.
“Try it out and get back to me on that, the truth is we will never have enough womanpower,” Moondance said before all four of them began pumping air into the lit furnace crazy fast. The four of them made some painful expressions as they did which indicated how difficult the task was.
“My arms feel like they are about to fall off,” Gina whined.
“Don’t you dare slow down and let it get cold,” Moondancer shouted.
“How much longer do we need to keep doing this?” Sylvia asked.
“Let's see maybe twenty to thirty more hours,” Moondancer said.
“IRON MAKING IS BAD,” Sylvia, Kira, and Gina shouted in unison. Suddenly all four of them collapsed from exhaustion.
“The kingdom of science really needs a population boom,” Moondancer said while trying to get up.
“I’m afraid no one is willing to help an outsider since they are very cautious about them,” Kira said.
“And unless we know what the villagers want they won’t even consider helping us,” Sylvia said.
“If only there was a way to plan an intel mission,” Moondancer said.
“Leave that to me,” A voice that sounded like a little girl said before it was revealed that a little girl who appeared to be around seven with blonde hair and green eyes was there.
“Aki? what are you doing here?” Gina asked.
“I wanted to see who this outsider everyone was talking about was and I can tell she is not a bad person,” Aki said.
“Well I must commend you on your stealth,” Moondancer said before she came up with an idea. “Say how good are you at hiding?
“I’m the hide and seek champion on this whole island, no one can find me,” Aki said boastfully.
“Then your perfect for what we need right now,” Moondancer said.
“How may I be useful to you?” Aki asked.
“I need you to go around the village and listen to what the villagers say, keep your ears open for anything that might tell us what they want then report back to us,” Moondancer said.
“Consider it done,” Aki said before disappearing in a puff of smoke.
“Smoke bombs?” Moondancer said intrigued by what Aki just used.
“We don’t know why but Aki has this thing for something called ninjas,” Kira said.
“I’m guessing the father was from japan and their knowledge of the culture was passed on to her,” Moondancer said. Meanwhile, with Aki, she hid while listening in on the conversations going on.
“Looks like today’s caught is a good one,” A woman said while her daughter looked bored with it.
“All we ever eat is fish, why can’t we eat something new for once,” The daughter complained. Next was three girls who all looked to be seventeen.
“What do you think our future mates will be like?” The girl with long red hair asked.
“I just want someone cute and can feed me,” The girl with short blonde hair said.
“I just want someone strong like I am,” A girl with tanned skin and short black hair said.
“I know we are each a month from being eighteen but our taste in men is different, I just hope that prison has what we are looking for,” The girl with blonde hair said. After Aki finished her spying she returned to Moondancer and the others to report her findings.
“So how did the mission go Aki?” Moondancer asked.
“It went well I think I might have found what everyone wants,” Aki said before getting into the details. “First there is what the valley sisters scarlet, Chloe, and Aleya had to say.
“Those three are the most popular girls in the village,” Sylvia said.
“I hope whatever they want is something we can make with our limited resources,” Moondancer said.
“They want Boyfriends,” Aki shouted like she was announcing it.
“There is no way in hell we are making one of those,” Moondancer said while Aki explained what they were looking for in a man which hinted towards something. “The girl who wants food might work, what does she want?
“A big feast with wild game and stuff, Oh that reminds me, I overheard Dana the village glutton complain to her mom that she is bored to death of eating fish all the time so all she really wants is to try something new,” Aki said which caused Moondancer to smile.
“Well done Aki now we know what we can kind of science to temp them with,” Moondancer said.
“So are you going to cook for them?” Gina asked.
“But what does cooking have to do with science?” Sylvia asked.
“Everything actually, Food is science, after all, I mean do you think the umami quality of the grilled fish you eat is just some kind of random accident, No it's glutamic and inosinic acids,” Moondancer said. “Now the question is what should we make. Suddenly Aki was playing with what looked like a small black and white pomeranian jumping at what looked like a green plant. “Hey, Aki what are you playing with over there?
“This is my buddy Rollie’s favorite toy, dog tail millet,” Aki said.
“You mean Foxtail Millet,” Moondancer corrected before she came up with an idea. “I think I just came up with an idea.
“Don’t tell me you're going to feed them that yucky Foxtail Millet,” Sylvia said.
“Heck no, the texture would be too crumbly and the after taste would be horribly bitter,” Moondancer said remembering the time someone made her eat ramen noodles made from Foxtail Millet. “But I do know a recipe that will bring them to our side but first we need to find some wheat.
“There is a wheat field a little bit north of here,” Kira said.
“Wait you know what wheat is?” Moondancer asked.
“Of course we do, we may not have any of this science you're so proud of but we do know how to grow crops and build homes,” Kira said.
“And your sure none of the villagers will mind?” Moondancer asked.
“This is a wild wheat field so no one will care,” Kira said. As soon as they reach the field Kira cut down the stocks and gathered them. As soon as the girls returned to Moondancer’s hut they began the process of turning the wheat into flour.
“Now that we have flour let's begin by cracking in some wild bird eggs and adding a dash of potassium carbonate for some elasticity,” Moondancer said before adding the ingredients to the flour and kneading it. “It's a dish of science accidentally discovered by some unknown Mongol around the fourth century. Moondancer then looked at Sylvia. “That's right he was probably a crazy nut that would literally try anything just like you, Way back in fourth century Mongolia. Moondance them began cutting the dough she made into noodles before adding some bird meat and vegetables to some soup stock along with some small fish. The smell of the broth began to whet the appetites of the others.
“That smells so good,” Sylvia said.
“And of course, We had a name for this stupidly yummy bowl of science back home, We called it Ramen,” Moondancer said before setting a bowl of it on a big rock that was carved into a table.
“It does look enticing,” Kira said.
“May we try some?” Sylvia asked.
“Be my guest,” Moondancer said while setting out five bowls. Sylvia began by slurping her first and the look on her face said it all.
“It's AMAZING,” Sylvia shouted. “The noodles go down smoothly and the meat and vegetables add some extra flavor.
“So slurpy and good,” Kira, Gina, and Aki said in unison.
“Now it's my turn,” Moondancer said before slurping hers down too. “ It may not taste anything like back home but it is still delicious and a winner,” Moondancer said.
The next day Moondancer and her group approached the village with a small ramen cart with Aki playing the ocarina on top. The villagers curious about the sound came running to find out what was making it and were met with the delicious scent of ramen.
Author's Note
since we have no enemies yet Moondancer has no reason to make gunpowder so I decided to just skip to the first project. As for the scientific roadmaps, I might commission someone to make them for me in the future since the visuals are what most people like about Dr.Stone.
