Dr. Moon
The Dawn Of Glass
Previous ChapterMoondancer and Sylvia were relaxing while Kira and Gina were busy brushing up on their sparing and Sandra was busy making a new outfit for herself since her current one was too tattered to wear anymore.
“So what’s next on our roadmap?” Sylvia asked.
“Another fundamental component of civilization and the first material in history to ever be synthesized using science. It’s called Glass,” Moondancer said.
“Glass? But now that we have electricity isn’t the plan to start making medicine?” Sylvia asked.
“Not yet first we need glass, those clay pots won’t cut it for the kind of experiments we will be doing, glass can stand up to just about any chemical, in fact, there would be no chemistry without it,” Moondancer said before continuing. “And it's ten billion percent easy to process. It can fragile or durable as hell, you can even see through it which means you can observe the reaction inside.
“Are you being serious, that is amazing,” Sylvia said.
“And to top it off once glass is acquired even our resident ninja can benefit from it,” Moondancer said referring to Aki who was doing some target practice but not hitting the target.
“For some reason, I have the fuzzy sickness so Aiming is a challenge,” Aki said before putting on some odd-looking goggles made of wood with small holes in them. on. “But if I wear these it becomes a little easier to see for some reason.
“It's called the pinhole effect,” Moondancer said before explaining. “When you look at an object through a small hole the light passes through narrows and brings it into focus.
“So Glass and the fuzzy sickness are they connected somehow?” Sylvia asked.
“Girl they are ten billion percent connected,” Moondancer said before approaching Aki and getting at eye level with her. “Here is the deal Aki. You're near-sighted as hell. It's not some kind of sickness. There is nothing wrong with you,” Moondancer then took her glasses off. “In a technological civilization, this is no big deal at all. We have scientific eyes made out of glass. They are called glasses and they help people like me and many others see clearly.
“So people can use science to make new eyes? That's amazing,” Aki said.
“It sure is,” Moondancer said before putting her glasses back on.
“If it is possible I want to see our island, no the world without all the fuzziness if only for a little while,” Aki said.
“Well, you got me excited. Let's make some of this glass already,” Gina said.
“What materials are we going to need?” Sylvia said. Suddenly Moondancer brought out some small pickaxes from her house and had everyone except for Sandra follow her.
“Glass is made out of silica or quartz sand. But I did not see any of that in the Sylvia collection,” Moondancer said.
“Why exactly should I waste time collecting sand when it's practically everywhere?” Sylvia said.
“But I did find a clue that will lead us to some,” Moondancer said referring to the see-through rock Sylvia was holding. Suddenly the girls were in front of a cliff face.
“This is the spot, when I was a kid I found this cool see-through rock right here,” Sylvia said.
“That translucent rock you have there is called a quartz crystal and it's found in areas of decayed granite,” Moondancer said while chipping away at the ground on top of the cliff with her pickaxe before breaking the top layer revealing a bunch of sand and then grabbing it. “And in my hand is lots of the raw material needed to make glass. The girls all began chipping away at the cliff and gathering the quartz sand they find. Soon they now had baskets full of it and by the time they got back, Sandra was now wearing what looked like a simple dress made from the pelts.
“Ok, you got a lot of sand now how will the great and scientific Moondancer turn it into glass?” Sandra asked using her magician’s jargon to get the other hyped.
“First we crush all the quartz sand down into even finer grains,” Moondancer said as Gina and Kira began using big round blocks to do just that. Next Moondancer mixed the grains with a bunch of other stuff before putting it into the furnace. “Then we mix it with a bunch of other stuff and melt it.
“Do we need to get anything?” Sylvia asked.
“Actually we already gathered everything, all of our hard work keeps paying off. We added ten percent calcium carbonate and twenty percent cooked seaweed like how we made soap. After melting it for some time everyone looked tired. “Now that that is done. Moondancer paused before a flashback played through her head.
“I can't believe you got Galena, lead has been acquired, “Moondancer said before returning to the moment. “We throw in a bit of molten lead and behold, super transparent crystal glass, perfect for a lens. The others all looked impressed.
“Wow it looks like a piece of ice,” Aki said.
“Or some kind of gem,” Kira said. Suddenly Aki pointed towards a device made from a bamboo tube with two smaller pieces of bamboo on both sides and some strings.
“So what is this tool thingy for?” Aki asked.
“It will polish the glass, cause doing it by hand will kill us,” Moondancer said before Sylvia had an idea.
“I bet we can use that corundum stuff I got to do it,” Sylvia said.
“Glass has a mos hardness rating of six, corundum’s is nine so it's perfect,” Moondancer said.
“Oh yeah it's going to work,” Sylvia said.
“Of course, diamond is the hardest rock of all topping the charts at a solid 10,” Moondancer said.
“No way Diamond is so fricking amazing,” Sylvia said as her eyes lit up.
“There they go with the stone talk again,” Gina said. Moondancer and Sylvia began polishing the lens while also giving Aki an eye exam with an eye chart drawn on a pelt with ink in the form of shapes. They kept polishing the lens until it was at the right prescription for Aki. Moondancer then cut some holes for the lenses into Aki's goggles before putting them in. Sylvia and Moondancer took Aki to what looked like a field full of sunflowers.
“Aki I want you to look straight ahead and tell us what you see,” Moondancer said as Aki did.
“I see sunflowers, it's not like I'm completely blind I just need to focus,” Aki said before Moondancer pulled Aki’s goggles down which then caused her to see those sunflowers in very crystal clear detail right down to the dew drops on them. “I can see, I can see and everything is more beautiful than I ever imagined.
“That is the power of the eyes of science,” Moondancer said.
“You two look so cool,” Aki said.
“Well now that Aki leveled up on her labor potential we can get started on making a full chemistry set,” Moondancer said.
Glass Aquired
The girls were now back at the base which essentially was just Moondancer’s hut. Moondancer and Sylvia were now pouring and stirring black rocks inside a clay cauldron that was heated up by the fire beneath it.
“Time to start our primitive glassmaking class,” Moondancer said while smiling wickedly.
“Yeah, I’m ready to do this moondancer. We keep throwing in these black rocks right?” Sylvia said. Suddenly Aki ran up to them carrying another pot full of rocks at high speed.
“Leave it to me to keep them coming,” Aki said which surprised them.
“Wow Aki your like a little speed demon now,” Sylvia said.
“Now that I have this clear sight it makes things much easier,” Aki said before noticing the bubbling foam inside the cauldron. “Woah there are white bubbles coming out of that stuff.
“That’s exactly what we want, when you heat obsidian like this it creates a foam,” Moondancer explained before she and Sylvia began spreading that foam on the furnace used to make the lenses for Aki’s glasses. “Then we use that foam as insolation to create a specialized glass-blowing furnace. Next Moondancer donned a heavy apron that looked like something a blacksmith would wear when working in extremely hot temperatures. She then poured some melted Iron into a bamboo mold. “Next we will craft an iron straw, use it to blow up the glass with air, and that it. Sylvia broke the mold with an axe then took the iron straw that was made to dip one end of it into the molten glass inside the glass furnace. She then blew air into it which caused the molten glass on the other end to expand and take shape. Unfortunately, her first attempts at making something were a failure.
“Hey that's okay, that was our first try, When I started making clay pots it took months before I got them down right,” Moondancer said to Sylvia's annoyance.
“IT’S NOT FINE, WE DON’T HAVE MONTHS TO GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME, MY SISTER IS GETTING WORSE BY THE MINUTE,” Sylvia shouted.
“Well what did you expect, I’m not a glass craftsman so trial and error is the only thing I can do,” Moondancer said which gave Sylvia a thought.
“Did you say, craftsmen?” Sylvia asked which gave her an idea of how to solve this problem. Now the girls minus Sylvia were waiting outside of the village gate. Suddenly Sylvia was coming back with an elderly woman who was tied up and being pulled by Sylvia.
“I don’t like this one bit Sylvia,” The old woman said.
“Who the heck is that old lady?” Moondancer asked herself inside her mind before Sylvia clapped her hands together to beg.
“Oh come on Granny Maxine, we are in dire need of your crafting skills,” Sylvia pleaded.
“Now is this how you youngling ask for favors these days? Because I can tell you I am not into this kinky rope play stuff. And I am most certainly not interested in whatever witchcraft you all are up to,” Maxine said.
“See that’s why we had to do this the hard way,” Sylvia said. Suddenly Aki walked up to them with the bottle of lacquer Moondancer used to make magnets.
“Granny sorry for not returning your lacquer sooner,” Aki said apologetically.
“That slipped my mind Aki, but thank you for returning it,” Maxine said.
“Hey were you the one who built that impressive wall around the village?” Moondancer asked.
“Darn right that was my best creation,” Maxine said.
“I knew an expert craftsperson had to be behind it with how well-made and detailed it was,” Moondancer said.
“While I am flattered by the compliment I’m still not helping you with whatever you are,” Maxine said before noticing the failed attempts at making glass on the ground. “Wait what is see-through stonework you got, wow. Suddenly Moondancer and Sylvia had wicked looks on their faces as if they lured the old lady into their trap. Suddenly Moondancer grabbed the iron straw.
“We won’t force you to help if you don’t want to, so just sit back and watch the show, because I guarantee you will ten billion percent be entertained granny,” Moondancer said before sticking one end into the furnace and then pulling it out to Maxine’s intrigue.
“It seems heat makes the material pliable and soft, like blubber,” Maxine said in her mind. Sylvia joined in and began blowing air into hers. “The shape changes so easily.
“Dam I blew up too much again,” Sylvia said while spinning it. Suddenly Maxine was jumping up and down trying to get free.
“What do you two think you're doing, stop, “Maxine demanded. They kept going and Moondancer began spinning hers. “She is not spinning it steadily at all. At this rate, she won’t make a good vessel or anything worth the effort. Are they doing it this badly on purpose just to piss me off? because it is working. Suddenly Moondancer looked back at her while smiling wickedly.
“There is no way an expert craftswoman like her is just going to stand there and watch a couple of noobs do something drultastic as glassblowing. How much of this can you take Granny Maxine?” Moondancer said. Suddenly Maxine looked ready to explode.
“I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE,” Maxine shouted before she used all of her strength to break out of the rope while looking ripped for a woman her age to Moondancer and Sylvia's shock. “You got me real good dammit. Maxine then grabbed the straw. “Here girls let me take a crack at it. Suddenly Maxine began doing the blowing before spinning it stupidly fast and steadily. Sylvia and Moondancer watched as Maxine demonstrated mastery of the art of glassblowing.
“Wow Granny Maxine, you have never seen it before and you're like a glassblowing master, “Sylvia said.
“It's because she has all those years of crafting experience, “Moondancer said.
“I have been a craftswoman for fifty years, believe it or not, in fact, I’m quite a big deal,” Maxine said sometime later A new structure was built right next to Moondancer’s hut. This structure had selves full of clay pots and glass equipment but what was most noticeable was the table with a glass island on top of it.
Glass Equipment and Science Lab acquired
“Woah now that is impressive,” Sylvia said.
“I’ll say now we can do some real science,” Moondancer said.
“Now do we start making medicine?” Sylvia asked.
“We are still a few steps away, You need to be patient, did you forget the roadmap?” Moondancer said. Just then Moondancer’s Dad ran into the clearing where they were.
“Halt men are forbidden from setting foot on our island,” Kira said while pointing her spear at him. Before she could hurt him Moondancer was shocked to see her father again.
“Moondancer? Your alive,” Moondancer’s Dad said while crying tears of joy.
“Kira lower your spear, that’s my dad,” Moondancer said before Kira complied allowing Moondancer’s dad to hug her. Moondancer filled him in on everything that has happened before he filled her in on what was happening on his end.
“We need to save your mother and sister,” Moondancer’s dad said.
“They are going to have to wait, right now we have a sulfa drug to finish, “Moondancer said.
“And how far are you in making that?” Moondancer’s dad asked.
“We just obtained glass and soon we will need to suck it up and go get the next ingredient,” Moondancer said.
“Which is?” Sylvia asked.
“The most dangerous one, Sophiric Acid,” Moondancer said.
