Steve the miner
days 3-5

My first long chapter. I took inspiration from the hundred-day videos on youtube. I want to put a fight in the next chapter, so let me know what you'd like to see.
days 3-5
Steve pov
I sat in the caves and watched as the guards killed a zombie that looked like a pony. I watch the small opening in the back of the cave. It wasn't a big opening in the ground, more like a huge crack. Once it calmed down, the guards changed. Ruby and Jasper walked up, taking the place of the two guards.
"Steve!"
Emma jumped onto my back, making me laugh as she licked my cheek.
"So your steve."
I looked back and saw an older she-wolf. She had black and grey fur with a little longer hair on her head. She had on some leather armor like the other, and she had two short ax's on her sides. But, her eyes were striking. They were bright green, almost like an emerald. "Yes, miss, and I'm about to start working anyways."
"Oh, what are you going to do?"
I smiled as I summoned my torches. "Once I see a good gap, I'm going to jump into that crack." She looked surprised as she looked at the torch.
"Where did you get that?"
I laughed before I summoned my ax, shocking her. "My magic comes in handle with crafting stuff. Things like torches and lumber is easy." She nodded before she sat down, moving her tail to the side.
"I could see how that is useful. But you don't have armor. Are you sure you want to go down there?"
I laughed and nodded before I patted Emma's arm. She let me go, and I re-summon my torches. I walked off the small overhang to Ruby and Jasper.
"What are you doing?"
I smiled as I held up the torch. "My magic finished making the torches. I got about fifty, so I'm going to light up some of the cave."
"Really?"
I laughed before placing two of the torches right outside the opening. They ignited once I placed them, scaring the girls.
"What just happened?!"
I laughed before I patted Ruby's shoulder. "It's a magic torch. Once I place it ignites a magic light that can block most monster spawns. "Slimes can still spawn from time to time, but killing them is easy." They nodded, and I started to walk.
"Wait!"
I looked back at the older wolf. I walked back over, and she waved a few more wolfs over. Two large male wolfs, and a smaller female came over. The two males were like clones, except one had a scar over his eyes. They both had red and white fur and only had leather pants with leather helmets. The female looked like an older version of Emma's, but she had golden fur and full leather armor with blue eyes. The older wolf looked at me with a smile on her face.
"These are three of our young warriors. Jade, Copper, and my granddaughter Sapphire. They will go with you and guard you while you light up the caves."
I nodded before I looked at the three. The weapons they had rusted and chipped swords, and Sapphire had a nearly broken stone ax. "Give me a second, you three." I ran through the inventory, summoned my iron ax, then held it out to Sapphire. She smiled and dropped her old ax away. 'I can make another.' I then pulled my stone sword and ax out for the other two. They took them happy for the new weapons. "Fair warning, my weapon-making skills aren't the top level. Iron tools are good for over two hundred uses, and stone is good for a hundred a forty."
"That's better than what we have now. The stuff we make is only good for a few hits before they break."
I looked at the older wolf. "Ya?"
"Yes, our only craftswolf was killed when the ponies forced us out of our old home."
I nodded before I re-summoned my torches. I looked at the alpha female. I guess that is what this older she-wolf was and spoke. "Well, at least these will stay lite for a while. And hell, if you all don't mind me staying here for a while, I'll make all the tools and armor you need for a while." She smiled and nodded.
"Yes, I would love that, Steve. But, I would like to ask one thing."
"Sure."
"If your weapons are like that, how good is the one on your back?"
I laughed before I spoke. "I didn't make that one. I bought this one. I think the craftsman said it was good for fifteen-hundred swings in it. And if what he was telling me is true, it's made of diamonds." She looked shocked, and I smiled before nodding my head to the cave.
"We can talk more later, miss. For now I have a job." She smiled and nodded before she waved us off. I walked over, and Sapphire knocked my shoulder with hers.
"You're okay. Oh and thanks for the new axe."
I laughed as we walked into the dark cave. I place the first two, lighting up the beginning of the cave. "No problem. Once I find iron and leather, I will start working on my armor and weapons for the pack.
"Yes, were are a pack."
I nodded as I walked a little deeper and set two more torches before I heard the groaning. I backed up, sent my torches away, and summoned the second stone ax. "Guard up." We formed a line as a zombie and spider came out of the darkness.
"Copper, Jade, you two take the spider. Steve, you and I got the zombie!'
Sapphire barked orders, and I was happy to have someone with a cool head. 'Well, at least I know I have allies with armor. Copper and Jade jumped on the spider, and I charged in and buried my ax into the zombie ponies chest. I used all my strength to force the thing against the cave wall.
"Steve move!"
I did, and Sapphire split the things head. It fell to the floor, and I laughed. "Damn, Sapphire, that's brutal." She laughed before putting her paw on the zombie's chest and pulling my ax out. She threw it over to me, and I grabbed the handle.
"Let's get back to it."
I laughed and patted Sapphire's shoulder. I sent my ax away, then got my torches back out. We walked forward again, and I placed more torches.
"So, Steve. Are you really going to stay with the pack?"
I placed another two torches and stopped as I looked at a few iron pieces. "Hell ya." I got my diamond pick-ax out the started to mine the iron. "You guys keep an eye out. If this is raw iron, I can start making tools sooner than I thought."
"Can you make some more swords for us?:
I finished the front row of raw iron and saw two more behind them. "Ya, but it will take a little time. Maybe a day or two."
"That's fast or you sure you can do that?"
I nodded as I finished getting the raw iron. "Ya. Now that I have an area to mine in, I can get more work done. Coal, iron, red stone, and so much more. But, before all that, I need a lot of stone, but that can wait." I got the torches back out and then kept moving, lighting up the cave until I came to a split in the cave.
"Jade can you see the mouth of the came we came through?"
I looked back and saw we were a good way from the mouth we came from. I checked, and I had two dozen torches left. I sighed and nodded before I looked back at my little crew. "Okay. I'm almost out of torches, so do we keep going or head back for now?" Copper and Jade looked at Sapphire, and she looked at me.
"You told us your torches would keep the monster from spawn in the light right?"
I nodded, and she nodded.
"Okay. until you can make more, we go back. "Besides, the sun was going down. Monster will soon be coming from the woods…."
She trailed off before they looked at me. "I have enough wood to seal the cave mouth and make a small gate. and , I will be making a few area's for living since I need stone anyways."
"Can me and my grandmother have one?"
I looked at Sapphire and shrugged. "I don't care. I'll just be mining into the cave walls to get cobblestone. Anyone who wants one of the areas is free to them." They smiled, and I laughed until we heard a scream. We all looked at the cave, and Copper and Jade took off running full spread. Sapphire and I weren't far behind. I had my ax in hand as we ran.
"Move it Steve!"
We come out of the mine. Two zombies and a dog-looking skeleton had gotten in, and a guard had an arrow in her shoulder. The two guards were trying to fight the zombie, and the Alpha was trying to keep Emma and the few puppies protected with a shield as the Skeleton shot arrows at her. I charged the Skeleton, and it aggroed me.
"Died!"
I heard Ruby yell as she slammed into a zombie trying to get in. I dodged an arrow before tackling the Skeleton to the ground and smashed the skull with the back of my ax. It vanished, and a bow appeared in my hand. I switched back to my ax and looked at the cave mouth. I could the lights helped a little. I switched to the wood and quickly started to build a walk right outside the cave.
"Watch out!"
Sapphire grabbed me and pulled me back as an arrow slammed into the side of the cave's wall. "Thanks." I started working again, and I was happy I had enough to make a two-by-two wood wall. I looked back as they killed the last zombie. I sighed before I let myself fall dot the dirt ground. "Damn, that was intense."
"Ya, well, thanks to you were safe tonight. Maybe seal the other cave mouth like that and we can sleep with both eyes closed."
I looked up at the Alpha. "Sure." I checked to see if I had more than enough wood for that six cave mouth. I got up and walked over to the lift-up cave. 'I guess I would make them feel safe. I sealed it up. I sighed, then pulled my sword off my back and leaned against the wall.
"Going to stay here?"
I looked up at Sapphire. "Ya, I made the wall so if something happens I'm first to fall." She smiled before she sat down beside me.
"Well, if it does I'm here to save your tail."
I laughed before I leaned back into the wood. 'I'll make a few beds later.'
Day 4
Steve pov
I smiled as I finished my fifth furnace and set up a crafting table in my new third by twenty-five area. I had woodturning into charcoal for torches.
"Steve!"
I looked to the door I'd made before Ruby slammed it into the wall. I looked at her and smiled as she held up her new stone ax.
"These things are great! We just came back from a hunt and we got three cows and a pig!"
I smiled and nodded. "That's nice to hear, Ruby. But don't push too far. We didn't want the ponies coming at us before we were ready."
"We know. Bronze has told us the same thing."
I looked back at her with a new stone sword in hand. "Bronze?" She nodded as she looked at me.
"Ya, Sapphire's grandmother."
"Ah! I didn't get her name yesterday. Well, that aide I thing I've made enough stone swords and axes for all the fighters. Will you gather them for me?"
"Ya, I got it."
She walked out, and I sighed before I checked the furnaces and smiled at the three-fourth stack of charcoal. I smiled and took out then but the five raw iron I had in. I sighed and heard a knocking coming from my door. Started making torches with the last of my sticks. "Come in." I head the door open.
"Hello Steve."
I looked back and saw Borzen stating there with Emma in her arms. I laughed before I opened my double chest. "What do you want? A sword or ax?"
"I'm not here for a weapon Steve. I came to thank you for setting up the gates. Now we don't have to have guards post at all times. The none fighters like to hear that we don't have to worry about the undead now."
"Well, just you wait. In do time I can turn this place into a fortress. Ponies, undead and anything else will have a hell of a time getting through the gates I'll make. Nice strong walls with iron gates."
"Does that mean you plan to stay with our pack for a time?"
I nodded as I finished my work for now. "Ya, but there is a problem. Once I make this place a monster-safe zone. They will start attacking the pony town. After that they will coming looking so I want be ready." I had five swords and seven axes.
"You make a good point, but we only have twelve fighters and twenty none fighters."
"I see, so the pack only has thirty-two members. Maybe we could take in some more strays like Emma and me."
"I don't know about that. You and Emma were not a threat to us. Plus, you have magic to could help make our cave safer."
I nodded before I walked over as more knocks came from my door. I laughed, then walked over and opened the door to see Jasper and a few more of our fighters. "Who wants an ax, and who wants a sword."
"Most of us want axes with swords for backup."
I nodded as I started handing out the axes and swords. They all smiled as they looked at their new weapons, and I laughed before I summoned my stone ax. "Hey Sapphire, I'm going back into the mine. Want to come along?"
"How far are we going?"
I shrugged as I started to walk. "I got an almost full stack of torches. We can go deeper and maybe find some more iron or diamonds if we're lucky." She laughed as she walked up beside me, my ax on her side. "So, how's the ax treating you?" She smiled as she patted it.
"It's great. I've never had an ax this light and sharp."
I laughed and nodded as I looked ahead. "I see well when it gets worn down or breaks I'm make you a new one." She laughed and punched my shoulder.
"I want a diamond ax like you're sword when you can."
I laughed and nodded as I chopped through two wooden blocks and placed a door. I opened it, and we walked through." We'll take that left opening."
"Why?"
It looked like it was leading up. It was that is where I will make a storage area. Put food away for the winter. My magic chest will keep meat from spoiling or rotting."
"Oh, that is great. We wouldn't have to hunt in knee-deep snow."
We walked up to the split, and I got my torches out. "I could make you guys some bows. Getting arrows made would make it, so we don't have to chase down our prey."
"That would be nice, but we still have the ponies to worry about."
I nodded as I lit up the cave, happy not to hear any monsters. I looked forward and saw we had reached a dead-end. "Well, I guess this is a good thing. With this, we've cleared this cave area of the cave."
"It's nice to know we have a little of this cave system as our own."
I laughed, and I checked my torches. I had forty-four torches left, and I smiled. "Okay, I got a good number left of torches. Let's see how deep the cavern next to us goes."
"Right Steve."
We started to walk back down this cavern. "I think I will carve out a larger living area inside this little mountain. Maybe I could recreate one of my people finest fortress city."
"You know I was wondering about that? Where do you come from?"
I laughed, nervous, as I looked forward. I interlocked my hands behind my hand. "Well, you could say I'm not from this universe." She looked at me with a raised eyebrow.
"This universe?"
I nodded as I looked at her. Best come up with something believable. "Ya, I came through what you would call a universal portal. Think of it as a magic gate." She nodded, and I stopped before we came to the split. Sapphire looked at me.
"What's up?"
I smiled before I sat down on a stone. "Have a seat. I guess I should explain why I'm here." Sapphire nodded and sat down on a large rock across from me. "I guess the best way to put this is I want to see if an ancient legend is true."
"A legend?"
I smiled as I leaned back into the stone wall. "I want to gather the great items known to us from the legend. A nether star, a totem of undying, full netherite armor and gear. I also want to get my hands on an Elytra. I want to see the lava lakes of the neither and the great gold hoards of the countless bastians. To be straight, I want to go on a grand adventure."
"Is that all really?"
I smiled as I leaned toward her. "It is, and I there so much more. There are also ancient magics that can make armor unbreakable. Weapons that can repair themself in battle. Spells that allow extra damage like sharpness and flame aspect and protection. My people wanted to stop all the madness of the age of the builders."
"So why are you looking for them?"
I laughed as I looked at her. "Simple, like I said, I want to prove to myself the legend is true." Sapphire nodded before she stood up.
"I would like to come along on this great adventure of your's."
I laughed as I looked up at her. She looked annoyed at me, and I held my hand up. I wiped my eyes as I looked at her. "Sorry. It's just nobody wanted to come along with me. So, hearing you say you want to come along makes me happy." She laughed, and a smile crossed her face.
"Well, I've taken a liking to you so I want to see this stuff your talking about."
I laughed a little more and nodded before I stood up. "Well, It's a ways away from that. First, we need to clear these caverns."
"Ya."
We looked down the right cavern, and I started to light up the beginning. We started to walk, and Sapphire crossed her arms.
"So, your people know all that did they ever find out where monster come from?"
I shrugged as I placed two more torches. "No, but we did learn ways to deal with them. We learned that they could only spawn in total darkness. Something as simple as these torches can stop them. But, there are other things to worry about. We found out some dark magic can make a spawner to spawn a specific monsters. Hell If I could find a skeleton spawner I'd make a mob grinder. Bones for bone mill to help the farms I'm going to make. Bows to repair and use, arrows for days if it's a good one."
"We could eat the bones too."
I blinked, and I looked at her. "What? You guys eat bone?" She nodded before she spoke.
"We cook them over a fire and break them open to get at the insides."
"Oh, you mean the bone marrow. It's good to eat in the winter, high in fats and proteins." I placed the lights, and I started to see the lights off in the dark. "Oh no." I hurried down the carven placing the torches on the ground.
"Steve!"
I came to a cliff edge and looked down into an underground ravine. I saw mobs walking around and a few slimes bouncing around. Sapphire stopped beside me and looked down into the ravine with me. "Damn it. Talk about the worst case. No armor, no bow, and nowhere near enough torches."
"Well, can you do something about it?"
I sighed and nodded before switching to some of the leftover cobblestone in my inventory. "Not, right now. But I can make sure none of these mobs come close to us. I'll block this off until I have the means of dealing with this." I started doing that as some zombies and skeletons started our way.
"So your just going to seal this one?"
I nodded as I left two holes up at the top. "For now. Even if all the fighters charged in, most of us would be dead before we could dent their numbers. They may be stupid, but if there are enough of them."
"Good point."
I sighed before I got my stone pick-ax back out. "You can head on back. We passed a lot of raw iron and coal. I got enough iron to make an iron sword and one ax."
"You sure you got this alone?"
I nodded as I looked up and saw some coal above us. "Ya, I'll be down here for a little while."
"Okay, well don't forget to come out to eat."
I laughed and shoved her shoulder, making her laugh. She started to walk off, and I noticed she had some red on the end of her hair and tail. 'Hm, I guess she isn't to bad.'
Day 5
Steve pov
I looked around everywhere and sighed. I had everything in this cave area and filled the holes back in with stone. I'd also leveled out the main cave area with Bronze's permission.
"Steve, Bronze!"
I looked over to the cave mouth and saw Ruby and Jasper with weapons drawn. I quickly pulled my diamond sword off my back. I ran down the opening I'd made, and Bronze was beside me a minute later. I looked out and saw three ponies, two with weapons. They were skinny and looked like they had been in a nasty fight.
"Ruby, Jasper move."
'But!"
"You two heard him!"
Bronze barked at them, and they did as I said. They moved aside, and I walked out of the cave. I put the sword off my back. I looked closer and saw one was two decades older than the other two. The two bigger mares had similar coats and manes. They had red manes with blue coats. The smaller mare had a black coat with a head full of blue hair. She was smaller, so I assumed she was a kid. "Are you three okay?"
"Steve! What are you doing!?"
I looked back at Ruby. "leave this to me, Ruby." She frowned but backed off, knowing Bronze had faith in my actions. I looked back at them and then reached around my back. I got my apples from the trees I've been chopping down. I pulled my arms back around and showed them the apples. The little girl looked happy and took a step toward me. The oldest mare looked shocked.
"Apples this time of year?"
I smiled and kneeled to be level with the little girl. She smiled, then slowly walked over and grabbed the two apples. I smiled, then reached around her ear and made another appear shocking her. Then she laughed and took that one too. She rushed back over and gave an apple to each mare.
"What do you say Grapejuice?"
I tried not to laugh as she looked back at me.
"Thank you!"
I laughed before I stood back up. I looked at the older mare as she ate her apple. She looked beyond tired. I walked over, and she looked at me. She gave me a small smile as she looked at me. I waved for her to follow me over to the trees. She nodded, and I started to walk over to the trees. I leaned back onto a tree, and she stuffed the apple core into her mouth. "I just want to know what happened." She covered her mouth and then swallowed the core.
"Griffon raiders. They attacked in the dead of night. A lot of powers are trying to expand. Since Equestria is a new nation, we're still trying to survive after Discords fall from power."
I nodded and sighed as I looked at the other two mares talking with Bronze. "I can talk with the Alpha. She let me stay here, and we've found a way to keep the monster away at night. Plus, it would be nice to have the extra hands." She looked shocked.
"A diamond dog pack welcomed strangers?"
I nodded as I looked at her. "I knew how to stop monsters. Plus, I was looking after a pup, so they were willing to help me. I've also started working for the pack."
"What do you do for a pack of dogs?"
"Their diamond dogs. And if you must know, I'm a craftsman. That stone wall you saw when you walked us was my doing. I plan to rebuild a fortress city that has stood for nearly eight hundred years." She looked at me with a look I had a little trouble placing. I looked over to the others as the puppies came out.
"Do you think…"
I looked at her again.
"Do you think we could have a place here? Were earth ponies so we could work the land and if more of us come we can be a great work force."
I shrugged as I looked at her. "Not up to me. Bronze is the Alpha here."
"Do you think she's let us stay?"
I sighed and uncrossed my arms. "Miss, I'll be straight with you. Ponies forced her and this pack out of their last cave. They killed some of their pack." She looked worried, and I nodded. "I get it, I do. Look, I don't have any say in it." She looked worried, then she looked over at the other two mares.
"What about my daughters? Do you think that she'd let them in?"
I couldn't look her in the then a thought hit me. I patted her shoulder before I looked over to Bronze. "Wait with your fillies, right?" She nodded, and I quickly walked over to Bronze. Her ear twitched, and she looked over at me. I nodded my head to Ruby and Jasper. She nodded and then said goodbye to fillies. I walked beside her, and she looked at me.
"So?"
"Griffon raiders. The other two?"
"Same, I'll be honest. I feel for them, but I don't want them here."
We got close to Ruby and Jasper, and they walked up to us.
"What's the plan Bronze?"
Bronze looked at me.
"You seem like you wanted to say something before."
I nodded as I looked at them. "Look, we need bodies. I want to start farms, build walls, and make this place safe, but we need numbers. And, I can't send them back out there knowing raiders and monsters will be out there when night falls." Bronze nodded as she looked at me.
"I can see reason in that. And it would benefit the back but the other members of the pack. If I let this pass, the other members may see it as weakness. We don't need infighting for a new alpha."
I nodded and crossed my arms as I looked at Bronze. "Look, if you don't want them to live with us, then let them stay with us for a few days. I'll gather the supplies and build them a house and a fence in the surrounding area with my magic. Besides, I need more time to make some leather armor for myself. Once I have that, I'll go into the underground ravine to get iron for iron armor." Bronze sighed and nodded.
"I'll give you four days, Steve. But, they do as I say when I say it. But, if they start trouble, they are out with nothing but what they brought."
I nodded as I looked back at them. "Thank you Bronze." I walked back over to the mother and her girls. She looked at me, and I smiled as I looked at her.
"So?"
I smiled as I looked at her. "You'll stay with me for a few days. I have magic that lets me do a crazy amount of work in a few days. I will clear some land and build you a house and a large fence. I'll get you a safe place, but the deal is off if any trouble is started." The mother looked panicked.
"I promise everything will be fine."
I smiled as I looked at her. "Good."
"So, will we stay with you for a few days?"
I nodded as I looked at her. "Ya, but fair warning, I only have two beds. I'm fine sleeping on the ground for a few nights. But I ask that you please not mess with my stuff."
"We can do that. Is there anything else?"
I nodded as I looked at her. "You'll come with me tomorrow, miss. You'll be picking out your homestead." She nodded, and I smiled as I looked at her. "Come on. My place is this way." We walked into the cave behind Bronze. I ignored the looks of the pack as I will up the stone steps I'd placed. I opened my door and laughed as I looked at Emma and another two puppies. They were playing with things that kind of carved dogs.
"Steve your back!"
Emma jumped up and rushed over to me. I laughed, and I patted her head as she held onto my leg. The other puppies got up and told Emma bye and me as well. I waved to them as they walked out. Emma let go of my leg and followed with them. 'She's probably going to sleep at Jaspers again. I need to get more beds out there.' I sighed and looked around and saw the family sitting on the beds.
"Um…"
I looked at the little filly, and she held her stomach. I laughed before I walked over to my double-stacked chest. I had eight more apples in this chest. I got them all out and walked over. I gave them two more apples each. The filly smiled and started to eat the apples. I laughed and patted her head.
"Thank you but, can I ask you to do something?" I looked at the mother. "What do you need?"
"I left something very important to my family behind in the rush to get away. Dd you think you can go to our old village? It's not too far if your willing I'll do anything you want."
I laughed as I looked at her. "It's fine. I need to go out that way anyways. What did you forget?" She smiled and then explained her late husband's guard helmet was left next to her bed. "Which house am I looking for?"
"We live out of the village on a big farm. If it wasn't burn their is still some wheat in the fields. Like I said I'll do anything you want and you can take what you want from the house and farm just please get his helmet."
I nodded and walked over to my door. "Their is some more fruit with Bronze and I made a nice water pool in the back of the cave near the wooden wall. Female's bathe be for night fall so if you all need a bath wait till then."
"Thank you." They all stood then gave me a polite bow, and I finally noticed that the mother and her oldest daughter both had nice racks. The mother had to be a double d-cup, and her oldest daughter had to be a small e-cup at best. I cleared my throat, and I walked out the door. I'd tried hard not to pay attention to anything like that these few days. The leather armor the Diamond dogs wore helped with how tight the armor hung onto them.
"Is something wrong"
I jumped and looked at Sapphire. I laughed and tried to look away from her, but she grabbed my face and forced me to look at her.
"Why is your face all red."
I made her let me go." "SapphireI'mm fine. I just got flustered." I sighed and walked down my steps.
"Where are you going."
I stopped and looked back at her." "They told me some stuff was left behind at their farm. They said I was free to take whatever I wanted if I brought back her late husband's helmet. Sounds like a nice deal, so I'm off to find it" Sapphire looked annoyed, then a strange smile crossed her face.
"I'm getting my ax. I'm coming with you griffon raiders, you know."
The edge of her tone seemed like a knife at my throat. She jumped down from the stone steps and gulped as I looked at her back as she walked. I sighed and nodded before I walked over to the cave's opening." Best to listen to her. I don't need my throat ripped out."
