Chapters Mass Effect: Beyond the Horizon
Prologue - Equis - The Beacon, Part One
Planet Equis, Realm of Equestria, Capital City of Canterlot
Royal Palace, Grand Conference Room
The sight before the eyes of Twilight Sparkle, the newly crowned Princess of Magic, could simply be described in two words…a menagerie. A crowd of not just ponies, but Griffons, Minotaurs, Dragons, Yaks, and members of other races from across their world were scurrying about the Palace, preparing for a massive diplomatic summit under the supervision of Princesses Celestia, Luna, Cadance, and Twilight Sparkle, with protection provided by Prince Shining Armor.
This summit had been months if not years in the making, as the recent defeat of Lord Tirek made it necessary to host such an event for the sake of their world and international cooperation. Tirek's rampage had been stopped, but the community of races across the planet had collectively asked Celestia not only to ensure this wouldn't happen again, but to facilitate a summit so countless other diplomatic issues could be solved in one stroke.
There had been few events like this before, and it certainly wouldn't be the last, Twilight thought to herself, as she watched a quartet of griffons bearing their royal family's seal haul in a wagon of luggage and accoutrements, sweating visibly as they did, but were steadfast in their work nonetheless.
Twilight did have to admit that without her friends and the Elements of Harmony helping her, she would've been overwhelmed by far. Each Element Bearer was tasked with overseeing a certain aspect of the Summit, and everything was going quite smoothly.
Rainbow Dash had been given command of the Canterlot Weather Team to ensure that inclement weather would not be present at times, and if it was needed, to keep a storm from forming. So far, it was bright and sunny, though a few white clouds peppered the sky.
Applejack was in charge of logistics, and making sure every piece of cargo went to its proper destination, where Rarity would supervise its prompt unpacking and use. She had also been chosen to sew gowns for a ball that was to occur at the halfway point of the summit. In a matter of hours, Rarity had produced four masterpieces for the Princesses, which were now kept in the Royal Wardrobes.
Pinkie Pie was in the lead for food, decorations, and accommodations. To her credit, her outlandish quirks worked wonders for her, as many doubtful Griffons found out first-hoof. She was a pink blur as she zipped from place to place, ensuring everything was perfectly suited for each of the delegates.
Lastly, Fluttershy was given the post of keeping any pets or animal companions healthy, happy, and comfortable. The Palace commons had been retrofitted into a temporary animal shelter, and the Element of Kindness was now preparing several wooden huts with bedding, water, and food. It was known that at least two delegates were bringing animals or mounts with them, so there needed to be a variety of lodgings immediately ready for them.
In charge of all of this was Princess Twilight Sparkle. As she gratefully took an offered glass of water from Spike, who was sitting next to her on a little chair of his own, she sucked in a breath and looked at her number-one assistant.
"What's up?" Spike asked, not looking up from the comic book he was reading. To his side was a quite tall pile of additional comics to keep him occupied during the summit.
"Well, everything seems to be in order for the summit." Twilight nodded as the activity started to slow in increments. "I think I could use a little break. Wanna take a walk, get some fresh air?"
Spike hopped up onto Twilight's back, and they were about to head for the door when a Solar Guard called out to her. Twilight came over, and asked what the matter was.
"We're not entirely sure if your attention is warranted, Princess." the Guard replied. "But we do think you need to see it for yourself, as you're currently in charge. Please follow me."
====
Princess Twilight and Spike were led out of the Palace towards a section of the garden near the left-side wall that faced the city. To the surprise of both Twilight and Spike, three other Solar Guards were holding position near a large depression in the ground.
"A sinkhole?" Spike asked, very much confused. "What's the problem with it?"
"It's not supposed to be there, Spike." Twilight responded. "Canterlot Palace was built on a bed of solid rock made from the stone on the mountain. Then in a place like here, a small layer of soil is placed to facilitate the growing of plants and trees. it's not deep enough for a sinkhole to form, and there hasn't been any heavy rain here recently."
"So what are your orders?" a Solar Guard asked.
"First, let's see what's actually beneath us." Twilight said, tapping into her magic for an imaging spell that penetrated the ground beneath the sinkhole, painting an image of what lay below in her mind.
"There's a statue down there. Or at least, I think it's a statue." Twilight reported with a raised eyebrow. "It's not made from stone, that's for certain. Guards, seeing as there are four of you, will two of you find Princess Celestia and ask if there's supposed to be a statue here. And will you see if we can get some extra help in lifting it out, if necessary?" she said to another guard. All three saluted and rushed away, leaving the guard who had first found them by himself.
"If I may ask, Princess…" he said. "What exactly are you planning?"
"I'm planning on seeing this statue for myself." Twilight responded, summoning her magic and clearing the ground around the object, neatly moving it away and into a groundskeepers' reservoir. Then, she looked at the object, and hopped down into the well.
"Princess, be careful!" the Guard cautioned.
"I'll be sure of it." she replied. The statue was like a rounded obelisk on a curved mount, and it glowed in a pale green light, on a background of blue and black metal that reflected her image like a mirror.
"Metal?" Twilight said out loud. "I thought all the statues in the palace were made from stone."
"Princess, I must advise you to come out of there. I don't think it's supposed to be here!" the Guard asked again. "Plus…I don't like the look of it."
"Neither do I, but You know what they say, though. Nothing ventured, nothing gained." she responded. She reached out with a hoof, and lightly touched the gleaming surface.
Then, she collapsed in pain as her head began to scream. Images flashed through her mind, of places she had never seen before, of beings not from Equis, and a massive armada of claw-shaped things traveling across the stars.
She saw war on an unbelievable scale and planets laying lifeless and broken. Countless numbers of beings fighting against their enemies and being slaughtered in the process, on both land and in space.
There was an absolutely massive battle in space above a planet much like Equis. Ships from both sides exchanging fire, maneuvering, and being destroyed. Lastly, aboard a five-winged station, a single hand reached outwards, to a golden light.
The last thing Twilight saw was a bipedal being reaching towards the horizon, a strange object in his right hand as he grasped outward with his left. On h upper right chest lay a singular symbol, the couplet N7 in red and white.
Then, in a flash of white light, her mind cleared and the pain lifted. She staggered, trying to get upright, when she felt a pair of hooves hlp steady herself. The lone Solar Guard had jumped down and was helping her upwards, and judging that Spike was absent, he must've gone for help.
"What happened, Princess? Are you alright?" the Guard asked, helping her to sit down against a tree.
"I think I'm okay." she replied. "When I touched that object, I saw things in my mind, like a vision."
"What kinds of things?" a vocie asked, tinged with urgency.
They both turned to see Princess Celestia approach, Spike and five Solar Guards by her side. She knelt down next to her student, and again asked what she had seen.
"I'm not sure, it was all coming and going so fast, and I felt like I was having my brain be split in two during the process. I know I saw a enormous space battle, as sciene-fiction-y as it sounds, these giant claw-ships destroying entire planets, and races that were certainly not from Equis."
"Then, there was a figure grasping a star, with "N7" written on his chest." Twilight added. "Then, it all went away."
Celestia was silent, as she contemplated her student's words.
"May I look into your memories? I wish to see these visions for myself." she asked. Twilight nodded, and Celestia peeked into Twilight's mind using her magic. To her shock, she also saw clear images of what Twilight had glimpsed. From the claw-ships, to the being grasping the stars.
After a few moments, she had seen all she needed. Ending the spell, she helped Twilight upright and to her hooves,
“What are we going to do?” Twilight asked. “We can’t just tell everyone here that we just saw proof that, and I can’t believe I’m saying this…aliens…exist. I don’t think anyone would believe us without concrete proof. Seeing as we’re the only race that can use magic…”
“You’re right, Twilight.” Celestia said. “For now, the four of us shall keep this to ourselves. Whatever happens as a result of this, we’ll deal with it together. Don’t tell a soul about what we’ve discussed.”
“Sounds like…wait, four?” Twilight stuttered as he realized what Celestia said. Then both alicorns and Spike turned to the astounded Guardspony, who nodded in understanding.
“May I have your name and rank?” Celesia asked.
“Gruadspony Brave Spark, Princess” he replied. Celestia bid him to remove his helmet, which dispelled the illusion magic that kept his appearance hidden. It was a safety measure from Celestia and Luna’s early rule that still proved effective today. Spark was about Twilight’s height, with a tan coat and a pale blue mane, with gray eyes.
“Well, Brave Spark, I hereby reassign you to the post of personal Guard to Princess Twilight Sparkle, effective immediately.” Celestia said with finality, causing Twilight, Spike, and her new protector to drop their jaws and prepare to speak, only Celestia held up her hoof for them to bet quiet.
“Listen, I know this seems like it’s spur of the moment, and it is.” Celestia said. “We can work out all the details and problems after the summit. I emphasize that for now, this is a temporary measure to keep our…discovery, for lack of a better word, quiet. Just go with the flow, cross every bridge when it comes, and you’ll be fine.”
“Twilight, just trust me on this.” She continued. “As I said, we’ll all work out the finer points once we’re in private and the summit is finished. Can I trust you both to go along with this?”
“Yes, Princess.” Spark nodded. “If Princess Twilight consents as well.”
“Well, there’s not much point in saying otherwise.” Twilight added. “Let’s get back inside, I’d bet the delegates are here by now, or are just arriving.”
In that moments, bells began to ring, as a signal for all working in the Palace to finish up their work, and get ready for the summit to begin.
“I believe you’re correct.” Celestia said, as Spike hopped onto Twilight’s back. “Shall we be off?”
The four of them returned to the palace to prepare, and in that moment, Twilight felt a small shift in her mood towards one of optimism. Brave bit his lip in trepidation but resolved himself to push forward, Spike was completely confused, and Celestia was giving off an air of caution, eager to shift the images she had seen out of her mind.
As they left the area, the object glowed white instead of green, then it went dark, sending an invisible signal across the stars, like an ever-burning flame in vast the darkness of space.

MY MUSE FOR MASS EFFECT HAS RETURNED!
In all seriousness, I wanted to do a Mass Effect crossover ever since I got the remastered edition on my Xbox. Though the current status of my Commander Shepard is still in the early stage of ME1 (I’m currently finding Liara T’Soni), I hope to have it completed someday.
I will have a few OCs in Shepard’s crew as new assignments to the Normandy, but only one will be on the away team. Also, for those who saw the roster and noticed the “Redacted” character entry, that member’s reveal comes later in the story, once the Normandy arrives at Equis.
One more thing: If anyone reading knows enough about Mass Effect to aid me in understanding the canon of the series, please PM me, as I could use the assistance.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy!
Next chapter - The Prothean Beacon’s activation on Equis does not go unnoticed by the Systems Alliance, and Javik, Admiral Hackett, and Commander Shepard confer on a plan of action. In the meantime, the summit on Equis begins at last…

Prologue - The Citadel - The Beacon, Part Two
Docking Bay 22, The Citadel, Alliance Space
Bridge of the Normandy SR3
It was finally quiet aboard the Citadel, a fact that Helmsman Jeff Moreau, better known as Joker, appreciated quite a bit. In the nine months since the Reaper Invasion, the Alliance had been hard at work restoring the Citadel to its former glory.
This arduous process included recording the names and identities of the countless bodies that were left behind by the Reapers, repairing damaged sections, sealing off sections that were too damaged for further use, and many other tasks.
Not to mention the still-ongoing task of restoring the Alliance Fleet, and dealing with the fallout of the Invasion. On top of that was the curing of the genophage, the rebuilding of the Quarian homeworld, every task seemed to grow more in scale by the moment.
Now that the work crews on the Citadel were resting and it was finally quiet, Joker found he could focus better on the Normandy SR3 and what it needed. After he and several crew members crashed the Normandy SR2 on a jungle planet, they did not expect to be met by a squad of Alliance Marines, who were stationed there to protect a small wildlife research facility.
After a three-week stay, Alliance vessels rescued the stranded crewmembers and the remains of the Normandy SR2. Once they returned to the Citadel, the ship that led the counterattack on Earth was restored to active status, and given a much-needed overhaul.
The Normandy SR3 was an improvement on the SR2 in every way, from its shields and hull armor, to weapons capacity and storage. Other additions included a sub-hangar and well deck, an improved armory, and a boost engine on the stern. This engine allowed the Normandy to escape in a brief blast of thrust and loose or evade whatever was attacking it.
Finally, the ship received two point-defense heavy turrets on the midpoint of the hull to dissuade any attackers from flanking it during space combat. This a disadvantage the Collectors had seized on before the Invasion during their attack on the Normandy SR1, and it wouldn't happen again.
It was a miracle to get everything arranged, installed, and working in such short order, but Joker and EDI were pleasantly surprised at the speed in which everything came together. Now, as Joker did some minor engine testing for long-distance flight, he heard footsteps behind him, and a familiar figure entered Joker’s peripheral vision.
“Commander Shepard!” Joker said with a relieved tone, giving a small salute. “I heard they reaffirmed your Spectre status while you were in rehabilitation. Congratulations, sir.”
“Thank you, Joker.” said Commander Jonathan Shepard, looking over the readouts displayed in front of him by EDI. “It’s good to be back in the saddle after all this time.”
“I imagine Dr. Chakwas did her best work on you.” Joker chuckled. “Did she?”
“She certainly did, and if I see another gene therapy pod within the next month, it’ll be too soon.” Shepard laughed. “How’s the Normandy?”
“Everything is green across the board and functioning.” Joker responded. “EDI?”
“Confirmed. All systems are primed, and ready for imminent self-destruction.” EDI responded, quickly adding “That was a joke. It is a relief to see you again, Commander.”
“Likewise, EDI.” Shepard nodded. “Now that it comes to mind, Joker, aren’t we supposed to have a few new assignments arriving?”
“Yessir, indeed we are.” Joker replied. “First is Corporal Rachel de Mura, an Alliance Infiltrator and ranger. Specializes in first recon, tracking, and navigation. Awarded three commendations so far for marksmanship, as she was the best shot in her unit. Garrus might want to put that to the test, if you ask me.”
“Second is…Urdnot Harko.” Joker said, surprised at the note added to the Krogan Battlemaster’s profile. “A member of the Urdnot clan, he volunteered to join the Alliance after the Invasion of Tuchanka . It is noted here that he is surprisingly well-tempered for a Krogan, and a first cousin of our old crewmate Wrex.”
“Next is Terry Davidson, weapons expert and developer for the Alliance. His father did high-tier R/D for Elanus Risk Control. He’s currently signed on to assist James Vega. A prodigy in his field, it’s noted he needs to develop some better people skills.”
“Finally, there’s our new Navigator, Layla Montoya. She’s a standout in her class for her unorthodox yet highly effective methods of traversing space. I reckon she’ll fit right in.” Joker reported.
“Good. Have them report to the dorms at dawn tomorrow.” Shepard said, then, a pair of messages appeared on his wristpad, first from Javik, then, one from Admiral Hackett. After reading both, he flinched, causing Joker to turn in surprise.
“Joker, send the alert for all crew to report in immediately, and get our new assignments here now.” Shepard said as he turned to leave. “There’s been a change of plans.”
“How so?” Joker asked. “What’s going on, Commander?”
“Javik just reported to me and Admiral Hackett that a Prothean Beacon has been activated on a planet on the edge of Alliance Space. After I confer with them both, we’re going to investigate.” Shepard replied. “Send the alert out, ASAP!”
“Already done!” Joker replied, gliding his hands over the displayed controls. Soon, the alert was sent, and Shepard departed from his ship for Admiral Hackett’s office.
====
Shepard did have to admit, calling Admiral Hackett’s command post an “office” was rather kind. Ever since the blast from the Crucible wrecked a good amount of the available space inside the Citadel, a temporary structure had been erected to house Alliance leadership, and in this case, Admiral Hackett. After all, he was now the de-facto leader for the Alliance Navy after Anderson’s death.
After a quick shuttle ride, Shepard approached the building, and saw Javik approach him, carrying a datapad.
“Shepard.” Javik said, offering the datapad. “Everything you’ll need is on here. I was able to pinpoint the exact planet, just not the precise location or what may have interfaced with it.”
“That’ll be fine for now, Javik.” Shepard nodded as Admiral Hackett opened the door for them. “Let’s see what the plan is first, and we’ll go from there.”
As they sat down, Hackett gave a sigh and gestured to a data redout on his desk.
“Well, Commander…” he said, wiping his brow with a handkerchief. “We’ve certainly stepped in it this time. When the Council learned of our newest development, they had a simultaneous heart attack.”
“I would assume so, sir.” Shepard replied. “The last time we found an active Prothean Beacon in Alliance space, it led us to Eden Prime, Saren, and Sovereign.”
“A relevant observation.” Hackett nodded. “One we will keep in mind. But for now, the Council has authorized an exploratory mission to this planet, under First Contact protocols. Seeing as we can’t spare much of the fleet, Commander, I want the Normandy front and center for this.”
“My ship and crew are both ready, sir.” Shepard replied.
“Good. Your orders are simple, and are as follows. First, you’ll take a Mass Relay inside Turian Space to this planet, and Councilor Laiel has already given us permission to utilize it. Second, find the Beacon, and identify who or what activated it, and proceed from there.”
“Remember, this is most likely going to be a first contact situation, so handle things accordingly. Keep your weapons down, safeties on, and keep all interactions diplomatic if possible. Do not retaliate if attacked unless there is a direct threat to your ship, crew, or team. If things go south, resolve it as best you can, retreat, and report back. We don’t want another First Contact War or Rachni War on our hands, especially at this time.”
“Am I Understood?”
“Yes, sir!” Shepard replied. “We’ll deploy as soon as my team reassembles.”
“Glad to hear it. Before you go, you might be interested to hear that Miss Miranda Lawson sends her regards.” Hackett said. “As she’s currently occupied with reestablishing Cerberus under Alliance supervision, she won’t be able to assist you. She did say she wishes that she could, however.”
“We’ll make it work, sir.” Shepard nodded.
“Alright then, you’re dismissed.”
Shepard saluted, and as he and Javik departed, the last Prothean came forward.
“We must be prepared for all possible outcomes, Shepard.” He cautioned. “I can’t be certain as to what caused the Beacon’s activation. I have a few ideas as to how to remedy that, but I’ll need time.”
“We’ll have time once we get back to Normandy.” Shepard responded as they entered a shuttle. “So for now, let’s get ready to deploy. The sooner, the better.”
“Understood.”
====
As Shepard and Javik returned to Normandy’s docking bay, walked up the boarding ramp and entered onto the ship, they were greeted by a flurry of activity. Crewmates were hastily sorting out crates of supplies and ordinance, vehicle techs were refueling the Kodiaks and Mako APCs…it was a frenzy to say the least.
“Commander!”
Shepard turned to see a human crewmate approach and offered him a datapad, a manifest displayed on its screen.
“All supplies for the mission are confirmed aboard, we’re just wrapping up sorting through them.” The crewman said. “Your away team is also reassembled, and currently in the briefing room alongside the new assignments.”
“Then I’d best not keep them waiting.” Shepard nodded, and the crewman headed off. “Javik, head up to the bridge and see what you can do, I’ll meet you up there shortly.”
“Understood.” Javik nodded, as he turned to leave. Before he did, however, he glanced at Shepard and spoke quietly, just so that only the Commander could hear him.
“It’s good to have you back, Commander. Your leadership is as keen as ever. I hope it remains so in the times to come.”
Shepard merely nodded, and Javik entered the elevator as Shepard headed for the briefing room.
====
As Shepard stepped into the briefing room, he was quickly greeted by Garrus Vakarian, Liara T’Soni, Tali’Zorah, Jacob Taylor, Kaidan Alenko, and James Vega. Standing off to the side were the two new members, Rachel de Mura and Urdnot Harko.
Rachel wore a high-grade set of infiltrator armor, equipped with an Omni-Tool. She was about Shepard’s height, with brown hair that was kept curled over her left shoulder, with a loose braid to keep it back during combat. Alongside her green eyes, and fair appearance, Shepard reckoned she would’ve been the star of any gala or formal event based on her appearance alone.
Urdnot Harko was similar to Wrex in terms of size, with light skin and a dark-colored horn. He was equipped with Krogan Battlemaster's armor, and a brand-new shotgun lay at his back, along with a heavy pistol. He did sport a noticeable scar under his left eye.
"Alright, everyone, take your seats and we'll get started." Shepard said, and his away team did so. "First, I'd like to welcome our two newest members, Corporal De Mura and Battlemaster Harko aboard the Normandy SR3. I'd also like to say thank you for your support duing my rehabilitation."
"With that out of the way, I'll get straight to it. Several hours ago, a Prothean Beacon was activated on a planet on the very edge of Alliance Space. The exact cause of what brought it online is still unknown, so we are operating under first contact protocols."
Shepard waited for the murmurs from his team to quiet down before continuing.
"As per Admiral Hackett's orders from the Council, our mission is to deploy to this planet, investigate the Beacon, and if necessary, begin negotiations with whatever race or people that inhabit this planet. We’re going by the book here, and we can afford zero mistakes.”
“Any questions?”
“What exactly activated the Beacon?” Liara T’Soni asked. “Do we know?”
“No, Liara, we do not.” Javik said as he entered the room. “Greetings, everyone. Commander, I’ve, as you humans say, dug up some more information.”
“Let’s hear it.”
Javik activated a holo-display, and a projection of the planet appeared for all to see clearly.
“First, the planet upon which the Beacon stands is completely habitable in terms of atmosphere. It is composed of oxygen, nitrogen, and various other elements, much like Earth’s own atmosphere. Your helmet rebreathers will not be necessary.”
“Second, it’s environment is also habitable. Various biomes from deserts to jungles dot the two main continents, with a small southern continent here. I would find it likely that there is a variety of races here that inhabit each biome, instead of one race across the entire planet.”
“Finally, and this is what I found curious, there seems to be some kind of planet-scale energy field on this world. One not based on or created by Mass Effect.”
That made everyone present raise their eyebrows in shock. Nothing like this had ever been observed in the history of the Alliance.
“Are you certain?” Garrus asked. “What kind of energy is it?”
“I cannot be sure.” Javik replied. “It seems to me that the entire planet is inundated with this energy, much like a veil. I would predict that its presence is known to the locals, or used in some way. That’s also without mentioning this planet is partially geocentric.”
“Impossible.” Tali’Zorah balked. “All planets are heliocentric. The geocentric theory was disproved by multiple Citadel races in ancient times. Why would you make such a claim?”
“I said it because it is true.” Javik replied. “The universe holds many mysteries. And I have evidence to support it. When I was observing the planet through the beacon, I observed that the sun and moon are also subject to the aforementioned energy field. Before my very eyes, as this planet moved, its sun and moon moved with it. I called it partially geocentric because the sun and moon also rotate on their own as well.”
“Here is a reconstruction of what I speak.”
Multiple people in the room gasped as a hologram appeared, proving Javik’s words to be true. There was silence, before Liara spoke.
“This is unprecedented.” She murmured. “This planet seems to defy all known laws of science and nature. How could it even exist?”
“Good question.” Rachel added, a hand to her chin in thought. “Commander, I think its safe to say we’re stepping into the unknown in more ways than we currently know.”
“I agree, Corporal.” Shepard nodded. “For now, keep this to ourselves. We’ll need more proof if we have to present this to the Council. For now, man your stations. We need to be on our way.”
As his team headed out, Shepard headed for the bridge. After speaking briefly with Navigator Montoya, a woman with dark hair and pale skin, he approached the helm of the Normandy.
“Joker, EDI, we clear?” He asked.
“We are all set!” Joker replied. “Citadel control has given us clearance to depart, and Admiral Hackett has given us the all-clear. Waiting on your word, Commander.”
“Take us out.” Shepard nodded. As the Normandy SR3 approached the Citadel’s Mass Relay, it blasted off into FTL speeds towards its mysterious destination.

UPDATE!
Yeah, this was a long one. But I’m proud of how it ended up. Expect chapters like this in length more often.
Next time - The Normandy SR3 arrives at Planet Equis, and begins its descent towards the Beacon and Canterlot, interrupting the Diplomatic summit, and beginning First Contact….
Mass Effect: Beyond the Horizon
Chapter 1 - The Normandy's Arrival
“Commander, we are exiting the jump, be prepared for our arrival.” Joker said over Shepard’s helmet comm unit, causing him to leap out of his bunk. It had been a steady two-hour trip so far, and it had been well spent by Shepard’s Team so far.
Garrus and Rachel had competed on a marksmanship test against each other on the VR firing range inside the ship’s armory. To the surprise of the crew, she had initially matched Garrus’s score, but had points deducted due to extra time taken. In the end, a 300 point difference separated their final respective scores. Garrus had commended Rachel’s marksmanship, and she had returned the compliment.
James Vega and Terry Davidson, in the meantime, had begun working in the Armory, and had actually gotten off to a good start on working together. That was primarily due to their shared affinity for advanced weaponry. Davidson had also given Commander Shepard a new form of weapon for field testing.
Due to the shortage of thermal clips and fieldable weapons as a result of the Reaper Invasion, Elanus Risk Control had developed a new model of rifle, a modification of the M8 Avenger. It did not feature the top barrel that most M8s used, but instead sported a handgrip and visor-link hybrid scope.
This new “Tactical Rifle”, designated the M10 Chariot, fired in a four-shot burst with a high cyclic rate. This modification allowed it to keep up a comparable rate of fire and accuracy percentage, but reduced ammo usage and the risk of the weapon overheating. It was quickly modifiable, easy to use, and as reliable as the M8.
The only catch was that it was still actively in testing. It wasn’t ready for general distribution either, so currently only Alliance members could requisition it. James Vega was one of the lucky armory chiefs that got a batch of five Chariots for field testing, and one was promptly given to Shepard. This particular Chariot Rifle had been modified for usage by the Spectres, and it featured the N7 on the frame. Instead of it being colored black and red, it was a more gray color and maroon to set it apart.
Shepard plucked the rifle from his bunk’s quick-access weapon rack, and exited the barracks. A few human crewmembers saluted as he passed, and it wasn’t long before he was on the bridge, standing next to Joker and EDI.
“What's our status?” Shepard asked.
“We will arrive at our destination in t-minus one minute.” Joker replied. “Our up-to-date scans do support Javik’s own findings, and we have also confirmed that the planet’s atmosphere is habitable. A standard mix of nitrogen, oxygen, and various other trace elements. Rebreathers won’t be necessary. Again, just as Javik said.”
“We’re certainly fortunate to have his insight.” EDI added. “However, our scans show a myriad of lifeforms that are not registered on any other planet. I have also not detected any large-scale industry. There are no pollutants detected in the atmosphere either, which is indicative of such technological development.”
“Then how’d they manage to locate the Beacon?” Joker wondered. “Or even understand what they’re going to be dealing with?”
“We’ll be sure to find out. We have to remember, this planet is unexplored. It’s more than likely we’re dealing with a less-advanced race or races here.” Shepard said as the Normandy SR3 exited the FTL jump, and the planet appeared before them. The Commander was taken aback at seeing its pristine environment. It was very much like Earth, albeit an Earth from more than a few hundred years ago.
“Alright, we have arrived.” Joker said. “I’m locking onto the Beacon’s signal now, I’ll get us as close as we can to its position.”
“Good work, Joker.” Shepard nodded, as he headed for the well deck, where his away team was waiting to deploy. “Have a Kodiak dropship stand by for deployment, and tell Lt. Alenko that the Marines need to be ready in case we need them. Once we find a suitable landing zone, we’ll establish First Contact with the locals.”
“Good luck, Commander. We’ll monitor you and the team from here.” EDI said as Joker shifted the Normandy’s shields for a terrestrial entry. As the ship descended towards the surface, the entirety of Shepard’s away team strapped themselves in for the ride.
====
About Fifteen minutes Earlier…
“Delegates, now that we are all acquainted and settled in, shall we begin this summit?” Celelstia asked, using a scaled-down Royal Canterlot Voice, and the assembled delegates replied in the affirmative.
Dragon Lord Torch was present, alongside his daughter Ember, who quickly made friends with Spike. The younger dragon had offered to show Ember around, and she had accepted. Currently, they were both in the Gardens while Torch saw to the summit.
The next was High Ambassador Gorden, from the Griffon Empire. He had served the Griffon land’s previous three kings, and was very experienced and capable of keeping such a post.
From the minotaur lands came a tan-coated male named Rampart. He was the current advisor to the Minotaur council, as the Minotaurs did not have a ruling family. Rather, the five tribes, each with their own customs, settled their issues via a council of their tribal elders. As all five elders could not come as a group, they all selected Rampart to go in their stead.
Next from the Zebras was a male named Zaden, who had actually made a quick stop in Ponyville before arriving in Canterlot. Apparently, he was close with Zecora in their youth, and he had wished to see her before his arrival, a request Celestia had amicably granted. He also spoke in rhymes, but only at the end of whatever he spoke.
The Saddle Arabians sent Ahmed, the son of the Saddle Arabian vizier. He was a capable young stallion, and he had managed to impress Applejack immediately by insisting on
carrying his own belongings and doing his fair part. Applejack had returned the favor by splitting a bottle of her family’s cider with him. As apples didn’t properly grow in Saddle Arabia, he had very much enjoyed the gesture.
The Changelings had also come, surprising the rulers of the Crystal Empire, who were also present. Instead of Queen Chrysalis, a pair of Changelings named Thorax and Pharynx had come in her place. They, as a token of respect to Prince Shining Armor and Princess Cadance, had given them a gift they did not expect to be given.
It was an ingot of pure jade, with an ornate carving of both Cadance and Shining Armor set into it. Thorax had said this was Queen Chrysalis‘s way of showing her willingness to let the past be in the past, and an assurance of her support for the rulers of the Empire.
There had also been a note that said Equestria was her home as well, and she wanted what was best not just for her own kind, but for all. Thus, Shining Armor and Cadance had accepted the gift, and were seated next to both of the Changeling delegates as a sign of trust.
There were other races who had elected to decline the invitation to the summit, such as the Diamond Dogs, who sent a chest of valuable ores to Princess Celestia as their way of offering tribute in their delegate’s place. Two other races had also elected to send tribute, as the Deer sent a case of valuable texts and the Seaponies a crest made from coral and sapphire.
“Now that we are all in agreement, let us begin.” Celestia said, and the Delegates bowed or showed respect in a different way to the others. “I trust your journeys were all pleasant?”
“As pleasant as could be, Princess.” Gorden replied. “I must say, your railroads have certainly provided for a quick trip. Perhaps I should take notes for King Grendale’s benefit.”
“Indeed.” Princess Celestia said. “Do as you think is necessary. We have two weeks ahead of us, so let us see to the business set for this first day.”
As the delegates opened their binders, each full of documents regarding what would be discussed each day, Princess Luna suddenly flinched at feeling a sensation she hadn’t felt in some time. Luckily, no one seemed to notice. She quickly leaned towards her sister, who also leaned over to listen.
“I just sensed an unknown object go past the moon, and begin moving towards Canterlot.” Luna whispered. “It is coming straight our way. Shall I muster the Lunar Guard?”
Celestia froze, and quickly whispered back that she, Princess Twilight, and Twilight’s new Guard would respond to this.
“Keep the delegates here until I return.” Celestia quickly added. “Luna, I will explain it properly once I know what is going on for myself.”
Celestia stood up to leave, and announced that an urgent matter involving Princess Twilight had come to her attention, and she was leaving Princess Luna in charge of the summit for a short time. As she teleported away once the doors were closed, she soon found herself inside the Palace Library. To her relief, Twilight and Brave Spark were seated together, talking as if they were friends.
“Twilight, Brave Spark, come with me. Now!” Celestia called, causing both Ponies to jump and race to follow the Solar Princess, their books left behind in an instant.
“What’s going on?” Brave Spark asked as Celestia teleported both of them and herself outside the Palace, near the main gates. “Does this have to do with that statue?”
“It does, Brave Spark.” Celestia replied. “It appears we have visitors from beyond, as reported to me by my sister. They’re coming here as we speak. As we are the only ones who know about this, we need to be ready to receive them.”
Brave Spark nodded, and stood next to Twilight and Celestia as a shape emerged from the clouds, bringing all activity in Canterlot to an immediate, screeching halt. It was an oblong, curved ship with two wings on the back. Twilight could see five bright blue lights on the back. The ship’s design was sleek and effective, but what caught her eye was the letters on the side that spelled a word in the world’s common language of Equisiean in bold letters.
NORMANDY SR3.
As the ship descended and set itself down in the vast circular plaza that lay before Canterlot Palace, the eyes of everyone in the city rested on it. A smaller object then emerged from the larger vessel. This ship was more bulky, and as it came to a rest in front of the two Alicorns and their unicorn guard, all three of them sucked in a heavy breath.
Several Solar Guards attempted to surround the three in a defensive stance, and one even offered Brave Spark a sword, but Celestia waved them off. At that moment, a sideways door opened on the smaller craft…and several beings stepped out.
Twilight swiftly counted ten of them in total, all of them bipedal and of varying heights, each wearing some kind of armor fitted to their body shape. From the left, the first was an avian creature with a gray and tan face and two small mandibles. His grayish eyes were shielded by a purple eyepiece or monocle of some kind.
Next was a blue-skinned being that seemed more feminine compared to the others. She had purple eyes, and her head had several curved features that resembled a crest of some kind.
Next was a slightly taller being, also feminine, wearing a filter-mask of some kind. She also wore a suit made of gray, purple, and tan metal and cloth, with some slightly heeled boots.
The fourth was also quite tall and more reptilian, with a horned crest on its forehead. Its beady blue eyes and tan skin, alongside a well-muscled, humped frame, showed this being’s strength.
The fifth had two sets of eyes and a finned head, along with an anthropoidal frame. It looked similar to an aquatic insect of some kind. From the look he was giving off, he was observing the Equestrians closely.
The last five were slimmer and far less exotic in appearance. One was feminine, with curly brown hair and green eyes that showed intelligence and understanding. The other three were masculine, with one being burly with tan skin and a mohawk, another had pale skin with a dark crew cut and stubble beard, and the third was similar to the second, only he had much darker skin.
The final one, the leader by the looks of him, was fair-skinned with brown hair, blue eyes, and a scar on the left of his forehead. He also sported a stubble beard, and he gave off a feeling of conviction and purpose. What really made Twilight and Celestia flinch upon seeing the leader, however, was the N7 marking on the upper right side of his chestpiece.
As they all approached, Celestia came forward with a barely hidden expression of shock and awe, and once the leader came forward, she cleared her throat.
"I assume you can all understand me?" she asked, and surprise registered on the leader's face, alongside the others to a varying degree. The one with multiple eyes registered this the most, however.
"Indeed we can." the leader replied, motioning for his companions to be at ease. "Should I introduce myself first?"
"If you would prefer it."
"Well, ma'am. I'm Commander Jonathan Shepard. I'm a Spectre of the Citadel Council and captain of the Alliance vessel Normandy SR3." he said. "My companions here are my away team."
"From the left, this is Garrus Vakarian, Tali'Zorah nar Rayya, Liara T'Soni, Javik, Urdnot Harko, Rachel De Mura, James Vega, Kaidan Alenko, and Jacob Taylor. They are each Turian, Quarian, Asari, Krogan, and Human respectively. I am Human as well." Shepard continued.
"My honor to meet you all, Commander." Celestia replied. "I am Princess Celestia, Alicorn of the Sun, first of the two Rulers of the realm of Equestria. This is Princess Twilight Sparkle, Alicorn of Magic, and her personal guard, Brave Spark. My sister, Princess Luna, Alicorn of the Moon, and second of the Diarchy, and my niece Princess Cadance, Alicorn of Love, are currently inside the palace. You see, Commander, we were beginning a major diplomatic summit when you arrived."
"I understand. Our apologies if we interrupted this summit or startled any one of your kind." Shepard replied.
"That's not necessary, Commander." Celestia replied. "May I ask why you have come to our world?" she then asked.
"That's a long story. We came to investigate a signal from a Prothean Beacon that came from this planet." Shepard responded. "It's a long story as to what that means, but we can explain everything in a more private location."
"It wouldn't happen to look like a bent metal obelisk, with green and black lights, wouldn't it?" Twilight ventured, causing Shepard to look at her in surprise.
"That would be the Beacon" he nodded. "I take it that you must've activated it?"
"If by "activated it", you mean that I touched it and saw all sorts of crazy things that I really don't understand?" Twilight rubbed her left leg in a sign of nervousness. "If that's the case, then yes, I activated it. It was an accident, I didn't mean to do it."
"Regardless of how it happened, I need to know what you saw." Shepard responded. "Let's just say I've been through the same experience, Princess Twilight."
"Then let's take this inside." Celestia said in finality, noticing the citizens of Canterlot were staring at them all en masse. "If you'll follow me."
"Of course, Princess." Shepard replied. "Lead the way."
====
Upon the combined group's entry into the summit chambers, the reaction of the others inside was as expected, Celestia admitted to herself. Ambassador Gorden had fainted, Rampart had stood up at a start and exclaimed a minotaur prayer, and everyone else had simply stopped what they were doing in an instant and gaped openly at the visitors. However, once Celestia cleared up the circumstances of their arrival, the mood settled from one of fright into one of curiosity. Ambassador Gorden, once he was roused, apologized to Commander Shepard, who simply chuckled and said it was perfectly fine.
Once chairs were brought for each of the members of Shepard's team, and everyone settled down, Celestia asked Commander Shepard if he'd like to tell his story first, in order to let the delegates prepare for their own respective stories.
"That's fine with me." Shepard nodded, as he pulled out a datapad with a built-in holoprojector, which currently contained his journal and the Alliance Codex, a vast archive on multiple subjects, such as the races in the Alliance and major historical events. After a quick overview of the Systems Alliance and how it came to be, and the events leading up to Humanity's entry into the galaxy at large, Shepard opened up his journal.
"So, where to begin? I'll admit my childhood wasn't much to tell about. My parents were Spacers, so I wasn't born on a particular planet. They raised me with a strong sense of duty and purpose, so I acted on that by joining the Systems Alliance Military when I was eighteen. I'm currently 28, just so you're aware." Shepard said. "I quickly rose through the ranks, making my way to Commander. Eventually, I was assigned to the Alliance Vessel Normandy SR1, under the command of my good friend, Admiral David Anderson."
"After I managed to earn some honors and decorations through my service, I was given a mission by Anderson to investigate a human colony world, Eden Prime, that had come under attack by unknown forces. I was partnered with an Alliance Marine named Kaidan Alenko, who still serves with me, and another Marine named Jenkins."
"What set this mission apart was that before the attack, the colonists had found a Prothean Beacon on the surface. Allow me to emphasize that the single Prothean Beacon humanity found on Mars accelerated us forward by 200 years. This was a very important discovery, and a Citadel Spectre named Nihlus, a Turian, had been deployed alongside us to investigate. As it would turn out, the Geth were responsible for the attack, and had deployed a strike force to attack the Colony."
Shepard took in a breath before continuing, making some raise their eyebrows in confusion. Shepard clarified that this next part wouldn't be pleasant to hear before continuing.
We came under fire from Geth forces after landing, and Jenkins was soon killed in action. We were soon joined by Ashley Williams, also an Alliance Marine, whose unit had been wiped out by the attackers. Once we made our way to the cargo terminal, we found Nihlus. He had been killed in action."
"After we secured the area, we learned it had been another Turian, named Saren Arturias, who had killed Nihlus. The issue was that Saren was a Spectre himself, and the best of them all. We put that aside for the moment, and we fought our way to the Beacon."
"I activated it, and that was when my story truly began. Through a vision I saw when I activated the Beacon, I learned of the civilization-destroying machines known as the Reapers. The Reapers were responsible for the Prothean race's extinction, and one of them, named Sovereign, was leading the Geth Forces."
As Shepard continued his tale, the delegates were spellbound as they listened to his words. From Sovereign's defeat, the Collector attacks, the Reaper Invasion, the curing of the Genophage, the peace between the Geth and Quarians, to the final assault at Earth. From losing and gaining teammates such as Legion, Ashley Williams, Dr. Mordin Solus, Grunt, Thane Krios, and Admiral Anderson, to the final choice he made to exile the Reapers.
"Now, though the Alliance has recovered greatly in the nine months since the Invasion, we still have a lot of work to do." Shepard finished. "I spent those nine months in intense physical rehabilitation and working to regain my Spectre status. It was difficult, but in the end, just as the Alliance defeated the Reapers, I succeeded."
"That's...my story. What do you have to say?"
"I have no words." Celestia said, very much awestruck, echoing the feelings of the other delegates. "Such a tale of heroism, of loss and triumph…I assure you, Commander, it will become legendary in its own right."
Shepard nodded gratefully, and as he and his team settled in to listen to Celestia begin her story, from the formation of Equestria, Shepard made sure to activate the recording function on his datapad as he listened intently.
After all, it wasn't every day that you got to listen to history in the making.
