Taking Flight

From the moment you were born, it was seen that you had something popping out of your back, but it wasn’t until the age of 5 that you found out that they were wings. Course, when your parents found out, they didn’t want anyone finding out, as it’d mean they’d never see you again. So, over the years, you were forced to keep them hidden and folded at all times, only being able to stretch and unfold them in private. This worked for your entire childhood, and even after that.

Now, you were 19 years old, and you were a track runner and gymnast. Despite not using your wings, you decided to improve on your athleticism, and you caught on quick, as you surpassed some of the best students in your class. You of course got jealousy from many members, but just kept your head high. As for your living situation, your victories were enough to get you your own house. You enjoyed this luxury.

Course, you enjoyed other things, such as hiking. In fact, that’s what you were doing now. You enjoyed going up mountains, as it meant you got a good view of the world as a whole. However, this time was different, cause as you were going up the mountain, a mountain lion growled at you.

“Uh oh… nice kitty…” you said, backing away from it slowly. You kept backing away, but it just wasn’t working, as the lion pounced at you and you backed up a little too much, losing your footing and falling off a cliff, “Shiiiiiiiiiiiit!” you screamed as you fell and your wings instinctively spread, but due to having no prior experience with them, you just plummeted to the ground.

Welp, I’m coming God you thought to yourself as you hit the ground and blacked out. You didn’t understand what you did to deserve this fate, but you felt yourself being lifted as you saw your body lay lifeless at the bottom of the cliff. You could only hope that you were going to Heaven and you’d be happy there.

Instead of waking up in Heaven, you woke up in a hospital bed. You saw an IV in your arm and your wings were bandaged up. You were shocked and surprised to even be alive. As you looked around, an anthropomorphic horse came in with a clipboard. She looked to be a nurse as she noticed you.

“Ah good, you’re awake” the nurse said as she checked your blood pressure. You did nothing to stop her, as you felt too weak to do anything.

“W-Where the hell am I?” you asked as she finished.

“You’re in Cloudsdale Hospital” she said as she checked your heartbeat

“Where am I specifically?” you asked her, getting a giggle

“Oh, you’re in Equestria, and more importantly, you’re the first human to actually appear in Cloudsdale” she said as she took a look at your wings, “Though I will say, you are the first human to ever come to Equestria with actual wings”

“Wait wait, slow down. So, I’m on a completely different world?” you asked, confused

“Unfortunately, yes” she said as she sighed and sat down in a chair, “So, you seem to be in good condition, your legs are okay, your wings aren’t broken or fractured, but they were badly bruised, so if you plan on flying, I suggest you take it very easily, okay?” she said as you looked back at your wings, remembering you never used them to fly.

“Actually, I never really learned how to fly…” you said, getting a gasp from the nurse

“How come?” she asked you as you sighed, so she just said, “You probably feel uncomfortable talking about it, but if you want to learn how to fly, I suggest you head for the Wonderbolt Academy”

“Wonderbolt Academy? What’s that?” you asked the nurse

“It’s an academy for all pegasi who have trouble learning to fly. It’s also had a human like you graduate from the academy, and he’s actually married to the captain of the Wonderbolts, Spitfire” she said as she sighed, “Well, I wish I could tell you more, but since you’re well enough, you’re cleared to leave the hospital. And don’t worry about the bill, someone’s already covered it” she explained as you cocked an eyebrow.

“Wait, who paid for my hospital bill?” you asked as another anthro pony and a human entered, surprising you.

“That would be us, dude” the blue pony said as she smiled at you, “Also, nice wings. Anyways, my name’s Rainbow Dash, the fastest flyer in all of Equestria!”

The human next to her spoke next, “And I’m Bolt, Rainbow’s husband. We found you pretty beaten up in the streets of Cloudsdale, so Dashie rushed you to the hospital. Glad to see you’ve recovered”

Rainbow Dash blushed red and looked flustered as she looked at Bolt, “What did I say about calling me that in public?!” she said before she just sighed and kissed his cheek, “Even then, I can’t stay mad at you, sweetie”

“That’s cute and all, and thank you, but the nurse told me about a place called ‘Wonderbolt Academy’. Could one of you take me there?” you asked as Rainbow Dash squealed

“You’re in luck. I happen to be a Wonderbolt myself. You looking to join the academy?” she asked you as you carefully stretched your wings.

“Maybe, but as of now, I actually just wanna learn to fly” you said, which only got Rainbow more excited.

“Well, what are you waiting for?! I’ll get you to the academy! Nurse, is he good to go?” she asked the nurse.

“Well, yes, but-” the nurse said as she was cut off

“Awesome!” she said as she wasted no time pulling you out of the bed and rushing you out of the hospital.

“You’re lucky to have her, Mr. Bolt” the nurse commented, giggling a little

“Indeed I am. I better catch up to them, though” Bolt said as he ran after you and Rainbow.

To think you ended up in an unknown land and were now being dragged through a city built on clouds of all things, it messed with your head in all ways. Your thoughts were interrupted as you found yourself in front of another mare with an orange coat.

“Crash, good to see you, but I have to ask, why have you brought a human into my office? I’ll admit, the wings are quite interesting, but can he even fly?” she asked, getting a sigh out of you

“Unfortunately, I cannot, which is why I’m here before you…” you saw her outfit, so you guessed her rank pretty easily, “...Captain”

“Well, good to know you got respect for superiors. The name’s Spitfire, but if you’re gonna be in the academy, you’re to address me as Captain Spitfire, understood?” she said, looking at you expectantly

“Ma’am, yes ma’am” you said, getting a smile out of her.

“Well cadet, you just started your journey to greatness! I also know who to assign to you, as she once had little experience flying, so I feel as though she’ll empathize with you. Vapor! Get in here!” she said as a pony came running into her office.

“I’m here captain! What is it you called me for?” the pony, supposedly named Vapor, said, sweating a little.

“Vapor Trail, I got a newbie here who doesn’t know jack shit about flying, so I’m trusting you with training him” Spitfire told her, which made Vapor gasp.

“But captain! I’m still trying to perfect my own flying!” she argued, but got a bit of a death stare from Spitfire

“Then you’ll learn and get better together, or is there a problem with that?” Spitfire said with a stare

“N-Nope! N-Not at all, hehe…” she said as she just sighed and looked at you

“Well, there you go, rookie, you got yourself a flight instructor. Good luck!” she said as you and Vapor left Spitfire’s office.

You followed Vapor as she led you to the training course. Course, she looked pretty cute, as her mane was nice, her face looked nice, and her… other features looked nice as well. Her flank wasn’t too large, but that didn’t matter, and as for her chest, it was at least a C-cup. The two of you stopped at a training course.

“Okay so, I need you to show me what you can do with those wings of yours. Let’s see you try to fly or even hover off the ground” she said as you spread your wings and flapped them a little, but only managed to hover a little before losing your balance, but you caught yourself, “Well, seems like you can at least control your hovering, so that’s good” she said as she smiled a little, “Now, let’s see you fly”

“And how would I do that?” you asked her, confused

“Well, how about… If you can hover high enough, try flying into my arms, without tackling me to the ground, okay?” she said as you took a second to understand, then nodded, “Great! Go ahead, I’m ready”

You took a deep breath and carefully flapped your wings, hovering high enough as you kept your eyes on her and flew towards her slowly, but lost balance at the end and softly crashed into her, landing on top of her. You and Vapor were face to face, and the two of you blushed before you got off her, “Gosh, I’m really sorry, Vapor, I didn’t mean-”

“No, it’s fine, in fact, you actually did pretty good. Taking a deep breath, maintaining eye contact with me, I guess you lost balance due to not being used to using your wings, right?” she said, placing a hand on your shoulder.

“Yeah, pretty much…” you said, looking down a little

“Hey, don’t feel bad. You’re actually doing better than my friend Sky Stinger. He wasn’t always a good flier, but I did my best to help him… by cheating. Of course, I told him the truth and made up for it in the end, but he was once just like you. And that reminds me, you probably already know who I am, but who are you?” she asked you as you introduced yourself.

“That’s neat. Nice to meet you” she said as she smiled at you and shook your hand.

“Vapor, this might sound weird, but I personally think you’re cute” you said as she blushed a little

“C-Cute? That’s sweet of you” she said as she just blushed to herself

“I just wanted to get that ou-” you attempted to say as you felt the mare hug you, “Uhm… what’s this about?”

“O-Oh… sorry, it’s just that nopony’s really called me cute before…” she said as she pulled away, “Ahem, back on track. Uhm, I have a new strategy for how to get you flying. So, we’ll start flying together, and when you’re ready, I’ll let you go. Sound good?”

“Yeah, I like the idea of that, let’s do it” you said as she put an arm around you and you did the same

“Awesome! I have faith in you” she says as you both take off and fly together for a while. Eventually, she looked at you and smiled, “You ready?”

“I-I think so, l-let’s do it” you said as she nodded and let go. You flew and flapped your wings for about a minute or two, but then you felt yourself losing balance as you went in for a landing.

“You’ve got this! Focus hard!” she said, and those words of commitment allowed you to regain your balance as you fully landed. You felt good landing like this as you felt a certain someone hug you from behind, “You did it! I knew you could! I’m so proud of you!”

“Heh, thanks Vapor” you said as she stopped and smiled at you, “Now that I think about it, I don’t actually have a place to stay. You know anyone who does?” you said as she blushed a little, but kept her cool. It still caught your attention as you placed a hand on her shoulder, “Hey, everything alright?”

“I… may have a place for you…” she said, her blush getting deeper, “W-Would you want to live with m-me?”

“Wait, you want me to live with you?” you asked her

“W-Well, if you w-want to.I just figured I’d offer u-up a place before you had to worry about that…” she said. You thought it was sweet that she cared, but for her to open her home to you, it was as if you were infront of an angel. Instead of saying anything, you just hugged Vapor softly, and she blushed, then hugged you back. After a few seconds, she pulled away, “So I-Is that a yes?”

“Rather straightforward, but yes. Do you have a guestroom?” you asked her as she giggled.

“Funny you should ask that, when I bought my house with a friend of mine, it was a two-bedroom house, but since he moved out, I turned his room into a guest room” she said, smiling, “Besides, I have a feeling you’ll be a better roommate than him, as he couldn’t keep his room clean”

As the two of you talked, it soon got dark in Cloudsdale, so you and Vapor walked to her home.

As the two of you walked in, her house looked pretty nice for someone living alone. She led you to the guest room as she saw it was a bit of a mess.

“Ah no! I meant to get this room clean before any guests actually got here! Damnit!” she said as she groaned and cringed at the state of the room.

“Hey hey, relax. It’s fine, since all I gotta do is just tidy up the bed, freshen up the room, and it’ll be better than ever” you said, looking on the bright side of things

“You’re not shocked or freaked out at my uncleanliness or procrastination?” she asked you as you cleared off the empty bed and got an air freshener, spraying it lightly in the room, giving it a pleasant smell.

“Nah, not really, I get lazy sometimes too” you said as you yawned and stretched your wings, but accidentally tore your shirt, and it was one of your favorites, but you just sighed. Having ripped your shirt, you looked up to see Vapor blushing at your well-toned abs, and you giggled, “Hehe, somebody’s admiring my abs. Enjoying the view, Vapor?” you asked her, smiling mischievously

“I mean… t-they’re good, b-but I just r-remembered, I have to w-wake up e-early tomorrow!” she said, trying to escape the conversation while going to leave, but you stopped her by grabbing her hand, which caused her to look at you a little flustered, “W-What are you-?” she said as you pulled her into a hug, which you could’ve sworn made her blush three shades redder.

“Vapor, I just wanna thank you for your hospitality. You taking me in was very generous of you and I hope things go well between us” you said, letting her go as she just blushed to herself.

“T-Thank you… s-sweet dreams…” she said as she walked out of the guest room a flustered mess. She seemed like a very sweet mare, and she was beautiful, but you let those thoughts die down as you closed your eyes, falling asleep.
