Riding The Vapor Trail

Another day, another wake up rooster call. The house was quiet, so that meant that Vapor had yet to even wake up. Wasting no time, you headed for the shower. After stripping, you stepped into the shower and began washing yourself. As you washed up, you thought to yourself, she does so much for me, is that a sign that I… like her? Maybe, but now’s not the time for that

You continued washing, until you finished and carefully stepped out of the shower. You wrapped a towel around your midsection and walked out, bumping into Vapor, as it’d looked like she had just come from your room

“Oh! Didn’t expect you to be awake already! Sleep well?” she asked with a smile. Seems she hadn’t thought to dress yet, as all she had on was a sports bra and booty shorts

“Of course, though with how you’re dressed, I can only imagine you slept well also” you teased, getting a small blush from her as she playfully punched your arm

“Knock it off, you tease. Look, go get changed and we’ll have breakfast. I’ll be making eggs and some fish to go with” she said, walking off

“Wait, I thought ponies were herbivores” you said, raising a brow

“We are, but with our ever-increasing population of humans, it’s basically been a law to serve fish, that way humans can get their protein to survive” she explained, blushing as it had become clear that she had been staring at your chest for a while now, “Now, g-go get changed and m-meet me in the k-kitchen…”

“Whatever you say, good looking” you teased, unaware that she blushed redder when you said that.

After having changed into a much more relaxing outfit, which had spots for your wings to pop out (Courtesy of Rarity) and just gave you so much flexibility. You walked out, and sure enough, you smelled eggs and fish being cooked in the kitchen. You walked in, and god damn, you couldn’t help but notice her flank. It looked plump, and before she turned in response to your footsteps, you looked up and met her eyes.

“Oh good, you’re here!” she said as she walked over to the kitchen table and set down your plate and hers, “So, just curious, but why’d you wake up early?”

“And you don’t? I’d think somebody like you would wake up early to get stuff done” you said, taking a bite of eggs.

“Yeah, that’s on me. I’m not one for waking up early, even on weekends, but that’s obvious” she said, eating her food before burping cutely and blushing a little, “‘Scuse me…”

“Heh, you’re excused” you said, getting a blush out of her

“Q-Quit it, you tease…” she said, still eating with her cheeks red

“I didn’t mean to tease ya, but okay” you said, getting a sigh out of her

“Anyways, I have a plan for what we’ll be doing today. You see, Captain Spitfire informed me that your test for getting into the academy is coming up, and that she wants to see how you’ve improved, so to test your speed, we’ll be flying around Cloudsdale, three laps, okay?” she said, getting a bit of a grin from you, “What are you smiling about?”

“Nothin’, just thinking about how badly I’ll beat you” you joked, getting a huff from her

“A cocky one, eh? Well, as I’ve heard before, twice the pride, double the fall” she said, finishing her food and taking her plate to the sink.

Later, you and Vapor had suited up, currently right outside of Cloudsdale. She looked stunning in her outfit, but that was beside the fact that she was attempting to get your attention

“Hey! Pay attention to me!” she commanded, but it sounded more like whining. Regardless, you gave her your attention.

“Right, a race, sounds good” you said as you flapped your wings in an intimidating manner, which sent shivers down Vapor’s spine

“Yeah… readysetgo!” she said as she took off, kicking off the race

“Oh, you motherfucker! Get back here!” you shouted, flying after her.

Vapor may have been faster than you, but you made up for it in stamina, as any chance she slowed down, you sped up. This went on for two laps until the two of you were neck and neck.

“Heh, you’ve flown well, but I’m afraid this is where you fall!” she said as she flew in front of you a little, but you weren’t planning to lose to her, so you caught up with her as her eyes widened, “How? How have you-”

“You really should watch that pride, it’s not good for you” you said, nearly getting in front of her as you turned your head and smiled at her smugly, and she looked right back with a glare

“Well, you know what is good for you?” she asked as you raised an eyebrow

“What?” you replied as you both got closer to the finish line

“Look, a Sonic Rainboom!” she said as you looked away, only to turn back right into her lips as you two shared a kiss, and that caught you off guard as you skidded to a halt mid-flight, and she kept flying as she had basically bamboozled you and won herself the race, smiling and blushing with a smug look as she won, “Woohoo! I win~”

“You… dirty mare… you cheated…” you said, defeated as you hovered over to her

“Sorry flyboy, but you can’t let any distractions prevent you from getting to the finish, especially in the test that’ll get you into the academy” she confessed, clearly teasing you as well

“Okay, that I can see, but… what was the kiss about?” you asked her, which only caused her to blush red at the mention of it

“Well… let’s just say, that was part of the ‘distraction’. Hope you’re not too upset about that…” Vapor said, looking down with a sigh

“Hey, I’m not mad, just… kinda wish you didn’t do that out of nowhere. Look, Vapor, give me a hug” you said, opening your arms to the pegasus mare in front of you

“A h-hug?” she stuttered nervously as you nodded carefully, “O-Okay…” she hovered over and accepted your hug, smiling just a little, “This feels nice… thank you”

“Of course, Vapor, we’re best friends” you said, getting a bit of a blush out of her

“I’m honestly glad I met you. You bring a smile to my face every time” Vapor says, getting a chuckle out of you

“Heh, I’m glad you feel that way” you said, scratching the back of your head softly

“C’mon, let’s head back home and have lunch” she said, taking your hand as you flew back.

After having lunch with Vapor, you decided to take a walk, while she decided to get a nap in from all that flying. You thought it was cute, and even put a blanket over her when you found her asleep.

Right now, you were just walking the streets of Cloudsdale before you heard a voice call out from behind you, “Hey! You there!”

You turned in the direction of the voice, seeing a blue pegasus stallion run towards you, “And who are you?” you asked the stallion as he stuck a hand out

“The name’s Sky Stinger, nice to meet you!” he introduced yourself, “So, you’re the rookie Vapor’s training?”

“Yeah, how’d you know?” you asked him as he chuckled a little

“Well, I saw you two flying around Cloudsdale in Wonderbolt uniforms, also, I saw the two of you head into her house. What’s up with you and her?” he asked, clearly a tad jealous

“Well, I’m her roommate” you said as he gasped

So what Soarin said was true… he thought to himself as he kept a smile, “Well, that’s neat. Vapor’s a good friend of mine”

“And how do you know her?” you asked suspiciously

“She’s my childhood friend, and still is. Did she ever… mention me?” he asked

“Only thing she mentioned was how I was a better roommate than you, so… not really” you said, which got a bit of a sigh from him

“Damn… regardless, she’s a good pony, no doubt. I’ll say this much: Good luck on the test!” he said, wandering off

Is it just me, or did he sound a tad jealous of me? you wondered as you headed home, sighing with almost every step

Once you got home, you sighed, which got the attention of your roommate, who looked to have just come out of the shower, in a robe, of course. She seemed happy to see you, as she ran up to you and hugged you.

“Good to see you! Did you enjoy your walk?” she asked as you ran your fingers through her still-wet mane, getting a giggle out of her as you did.

“You need to dry your mane off some more, and yes, I did” you said as she took off the towel around her neck and dried her mane off as you plopped onto the couch, sighing

“What’s got you down? Normally you don’t sigh when plopping on the couch, except when you’re exhausted from training” Vapor said, plopping down on an empty spot

“Aren’t you going to-” you attempted to say as she placed a finger on your lips softly

“Ah tu tu tu tuh… tell me what’s on your mind first, okay?” she said, getting a soft nod from you as she took her finger away, “Okay, now what’s going on?”

“Well, I ran into this stallion. Apparently his name was Sky Stinger. You mentioned him a few weeks back, and he said he knew you” you said as she sighed

“I did know him. He was my childhood friend. Still is, but things have been rough between me and him” she explained

“And why is that?” you asked her as she sighed again, this time leaning her head on your shoulder

“Well, during our time as roommates, he… developed a crush on me, and I didn’t feel the same way. Course, even after telling him I didn’t want to date him, he’d constantly try to peek at me whenever I was changing and shit, and… I wasn’t gonna just let it happen, so eventually, I upped the courage and kicked him out of my house and onto his flank. Did you tell him anything about us?” she asked hesitantly

“Other than you telling me I was a better roommate than him, not really” you said, which got a sigh of relief out of her, “What, should I have said more?” you asked her

“No no, not at all. Last thing I need is drama from Sky again” she said, sighing a little

“Drama? Like what?” you asked her

“Well, years ago, I… helped Sky with his flying by using my wings to give him the air needed to succeed. We had it good for a while, until I exposed him and he got upset at me. We fixed things in the end, but that didn’t stop us from fighting and arguing at times…” she said, tearing up a little, “Surely you know how it feels losing somepony close to you, right…?”

“Not exactly, Vapor, but listen” you said as you put an arm around her softly, “You’re a very strong and helpful pony, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise”

“And you’re telling me this… why?” she asked, starting to blush

“One, you’re my best friend, and two, I’m pretty sure nopony else has really told you that” you said as she blushed a little more

“Well, Sky has said things like that before… but he never really meant it, he only said it. However, you mean what you say, and that makes me happy” she said as she side-hugged you and sighed

“I’m glad you’re happy, Vapor” you said, yawning as you laid down on the couch, yawning a little. What caught your attention was Vapor joining you, laying right next to you, “Um, Vapor, what’re you doing?”

“What? I can’t share my couch with my roommate? That’s cold…” she said, sighing

“No, it’s not that, I was just planning to sleep here, since I’m exhausted” you said, grabbing a blanket and covering yourself

Vapor pouted cutely as you looked at her. She pouted still as she said, “Share the blanket with me? Please?”

You groaned and simply just threw the blanket over you and her, getting a giggle out of her as she smiled and nuzzled you, “Yay~”

“I’m going to sleep” you said, taking one of the pillows and placing it behind your head, closing your eyes

“Nighty night~” she said as you drifted off to sleep

You woke up, feeling your head resting on something soft, not only that, but your butt was doing the same. As you strained and opened your eyes, you saw the clearer picture, seeing that Vapor had readjusted herself to under you. She had her arms wrapped around your chest, her legs next to yours, your butt in her lap, and of course, your head resting on her bosom

While it all felt nice, it felt very awkward, being in this position with your roommate, though you also noticed that she was acting flirtatious last night, so that explained some of it. Not wanting to be any more awkward than usual, you tried slipping out of her grasp, but for being such a timid pony, she had a strong grip.

Having no choice, you gently tickled under each of her armpits, which allowed you to carefully get up and head to the bathroom, staring into the mirror at yourself, What am I feeling? Wait, no, better question, what is she feeling? Does she have a crush on me, and if so, am I right in feeling the same way for a pony? Damnit, so many questions… you stressfully thought as you wasted no time in undressing and taking a shower, washing up after being in that position.

A few minutes later, you came out and straight to your room, and luckily, you didn’t hear any hoof steps… Yet. After getting dressed, you came out to the living room and looked at the calendar, and that’s when you almost had a stroke: Today was the day to get into the academy.

You internally panicked, and instead of waking Vapor, you decided to spare her that and, within a few minutes, brewed coffee and cooked one of her favorite breakfast choices. After that was done, you raced off to the academy.

Once you got there, you met with Spitfire, and she looked confused, “Where’s Vapor? She’s supposed to be here with you”

“She overslept, but I’m here, captain” you said, saluting her and standing tall

Spitfire sighed as she pinched the bridge of her glasses, “That girl… I’ll have to discipline her after this… whatever. Rookie, are you sure you’re ready?”

“Wait, captain, please don’t discipline her!” you urged, as the last thing you wanted was to see your best friend and roommate be demoted for her neglect.

“And what’s gonna convince me not to, Hmmmm?” she said, as it was no doubt that Vapor would be unhappy being demoted

“Okay, if I beat the test first try, Vapor receives no punishment, sound good?” you suggested as she hmmmmm’d in response

“Alright rookie, and if you fail, she gets demoted and you miss your chance at getting into the academy, for life. Understand?” she said as you sweated a little. Not only would your friend’s position be in your hands, but your future would be at risk as well. It was risky, but you decided to go through with it regardless.

“I understand, Ma’am, I’m ready” you said, not breaking eye contact with Spitfire.

“I bout expected you to chicken out, but okay. Follow me, Rookie” she said, leading you to the course that’d ultimately determine you getting into the academy, “So, goal of the test: Run the course as flawlessly as possible and nail a smooth landing after being thrown high in the air by some intense wind. Got all that?” she explained as you nodded, “Alright, your test starts… NOW!”

Wasting no time, you took off. You used what you had learned from Vapor, and executed it throughout the course, coming to the end where Pegasi are thrown into the air and have to perform a landing. After getting to the end, you were propelled into the air and had trouble at first, but took a deep breath and dived down, landing perfectly on your own two feet.

After what seemed like a minute of silence, you heard applause from Spitfire as she walked towards you, “Congrats Rookie, you’re in the academy”

“Seriously?” you said. Sure, you landed perfectly, but you were a tad nervous.

“Did I stutter, or are you deaf?” she said, clearly being sarcastic

“No, sorry ma’am. Thank you” you said, bowing before her as you heard a pair of hooves come clopping your way

“Captain Spitfire!” Vapor called out as she ran up, “I’m terribly sorry that I’m late! I forgot today was the day! I’m really sorry, what’s my punishment…?” she said, ashamed that she was late

“Vapor, you’re not in trouble” Spitfire said, chuckling a little

“Y-You’re not?” Vapor said, a little confused, “B-But I-“

“You would be, but it seems your human friend here really cares about you, as he risked this test to not only save you the trouble, but he put his chance of being in the academy on the line. Few rookies I’ve tested have ever really done that. Be thankful for your friend here, Vapor” Spitfire said with a small grin

Vapor turned to you and hugged you tightly, “You really did that all for me? Risking such a chance for somepony like me?”

“Of course, Vapor. You’re my best friend. I wouldn’t wanna be best friends with anypony else other than you” you said, and she blushed red, causing you to giggle

“Well, if that’s the case…~” she said as she wrapped her arms around your neck and pulled you in for a kiss. You were surprised, but you couldn’t help but close your eyes and return the kiss, petting her mane softly. After a while, the two of you parted lips, and she giggled.

“Uh… Vapor? What was that abo-” you tried to say as she placed a finger on your lips softly

“We’ll talk later, at home, okay?” she asked you, and you nodded in response, “Okay, good”

Spitfire just giggled as you both looked at her, “Well, if you two lovebirds are finished, you’re dismissed. Rookie, I look forward to your attendance being perfect at the academy” she finished as you smiled.

“Thanks captain, you’re the best” you said as you took off with Vapor

“You’re awesome, Captain Spitfire!” Vapor shouted as the two of you left.

After the two of you got home, you insisted that Vapor and you sit down for a chat. She happily agreed, and after washing up, the two of you sat on the couch. After a few minutes passed, you spoke

“Vapor, be honest with me, what am I to you?” you asked her as she blushed nervously and fidgeted a little, but you put an arm around her as she calmed down

“Well… you’re more than just a close friend… you’re like…” she blushed redder as it looked as if she couldn’t speak to you seriously

“Like what?” you asked, petting her mane in a reassuring way

“Likeacrush!” she blurted out, blushing reddest as she can. You giggled as she hid her face in a pillow. Not wanting her to feel embarrassed, you gently pulled the pillow back and hugged her.

“I had a feeling you did, though I wasn’t sure. This confirms it” you said, giving her a gentle cheek kiss, making her blush

“So… you have a crush on me, like I do on you?” she asked, and you nodded

“Yeah, though I feel as though we have more than crushes, Vapor, but let’s not rush things, okay?” you said. Sure, you no doubt had a crush on Vapor, but it’d be a little too soon to start a relationship

“Okay, sounds good” she said as she kissed your cheek. The sun was now setting as she yawned, “Uh, you wanna sleep in my room tonight…?”

“Sure, why not” you said as she squealed and got up, taking your hand

“This is gonna be awesome!” she said as she led you to her room, closing the door as you both entered.

What followed after was a peaceful night’s sleep, and it honestly felt well rewarded. You could only dream of what was to come in the later months, but one thing you knew for sure was that you were gonna get closer to your ‘special somepony’.
