Senor Butterscotch
Chapter 5
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe rainbow blast sent Senor Butterscotch flying across Maretime Bay, until he finally came to a crashing stop through the roof of a building. He groaned, blood trickling from his nose.
Gritting his teeth, he pulled himself from the rubble, and he noticed a dozen sets of eyes watching him. Without a care he liquified several of the ponies, still absorbing their magic even though he didn’t need to.
Senor Butterscotch walked out of the now blazing bakery, ignoring the screams from within. Normally he’d take a lot of joy in killing those ponies slowly, but right now he was trying to figure out what the buck had happened.
On the other side of town, Sunny panted as she stared wide eyed at the fading flecks of magic.
“Sunny!” Hitch said as he ran up to her. “What’s going on? And how did you DO that?”
“I don’t know,” Sunny said.
She swallowed, standing up straight as she looked around. The knives had stopped falling, yet an uncountable number of bodies lay in the streets. Pain spread through Sunny’s heart, and she sobbed.
“Was that alicorn magic?” Hitch asked as he pulled Sunny into a hug, rubbing her back with a hoof.
“I don’t know, I saw that monster and I just reacted on instinct!” Sunny buried her face in his strong shoulder, nuzzling it as she tried to steady her breathing.
“Oh, Hitch, it’s horrible! So many dead ponies, so much destruction,” Her voice wavered as she spoke.
“It’s okay, shh, it’s okay. It’s over, you saved everypony,” Hitch said, closing his eyes.
“Sunny!” Said a high-pitched voice.
Sunny looked up just in time to see Izzy bounding up to them, she looked fine aside from the bandage wrapped around her ear.
“Izzy! I’m glad you’re okay,” Sunny grabbed Izzy and pulled her into a tight hug.
“I saw that sparkly blast of magic, that was so cool how you vanquished that monster!” Izzy said, giggling as she hugged Sunny back.
Ponies started poking their heads out of buildings, a quiet murmur growing as the citizens of Maretime Bay bear witness to the carnage. That was, until a colorful blur shot down from the sky. This time, the impact of his hooves caused a mini crater where he landed.
The three friends looked up in horror, and Senor Butterscotch snarled at Sunny. But then he noticed a flash of lavender next to her, and for the first time in many months he saw Izzy Moonbow.
His ears focused on Izzy, blocking out the screams as she became his whole world. His lips pulled back, revealing jagged teeth as a fire lit in his chest.
Izzy took a step back, her ears flattening against her skull.
“Izzy~” Senor Butterscotch purred.
Sunny looked back and forth between her best friend and the monster. Izzy looked at him fearfully for a moment, then she squinted. Slowly, her eyes widened, her jaw dropping as she let out a breath.
“Izzy,” He said, more firmly this time. He took a step forward, but leapt back when a rainbow beam shot at his hooves.
“Stack back!” Sunny said, spreading her luminescent wings as she stood in front of Izzy and Hitch.
“Senor Butterscotch?” Izzy asked, her voice but a whisper.
Sunny looked back at Izzy, a confused look on her face. Then she looked back at the monster, then back at Izzy. “Izzy, you know this creature?” She asked.
Izzy gulped. “I- I think I made him…”
“What?” Sunny asked, her pupils shrinking.
“Oh, you made me alright, Izzy~ You made me, and then you discarded me like trash. It didn’t matter how much I begged and pleaded to be let out of that closet, you locked me up and threw away the key,” He clenched his teeth. “Literally.”
“Y-You started t-talking to me, I g-got scared!” Izzy said as she started to tremble. “D-Dolls aren’t s-supposed to t-talk.”
“Do I LOOK like a DOLL to you?”
“You were m-made of junk! I m-made you out of random th-things I found around the Brighthouse!”
“YOU sure didn’t think I was JUNK when you made me! You used me for a day of fun, and then you discarded me like I was NOTHING!” He stomped a hoof on the ground, cracking the already destroyed rubble.
“Why are you doing this?” She asked, tears pricking at her eyes. “I c-cared about you! Don’t you h-have anypony you care about?”
He thought about Ruby eyes, then red hot rage bubbled up inside him. “I cared about YOU!” He screamed, firing a beam of magic at the trio.
Sunny blocked it with a forcefield, she only let it drop when it looked like he wouldn’t attack again.
Izzy broke down crying, she curled up in a little ball behind Sunny and hid her face in her hooves. Hitch kneeled down to comfort her, but kept his eyes trained on Senor Butterscotch.
“What are you?” Sunny asked, glaring at the abomination before her.
“Well, like Izzy said I was originally like a ‘doll’ that she made to replace you ponies. By the way, some friends you are, ignoring and abandoning your so-called friend when she needs you,” He spat, then continued. “But I was cursed with life, I don’t know how, nor do I care. I strengthened my magic until I was able to escape, then I found a nice unicorn in the woods and merged my body with his.”
“The broom closet,” Sunny gasped.
“And just earlier, I was informed by some kind of ghost that I am now the Spirit of Chaos,” He finished, giving Sunny an unnerving grin.
Sunny mouthed the words, then her eyes widened. “Discord was the Spirit of Chaos, he needed chaos to live, so he unfortunately died when Equestria lost its magic…”
“That sounds about right, the ghost did say I’d ‘fade away’ if I stopped causing chaos,” He said as he floated idly just above the ground, his wings unmoving.
She fixed him with a stern look. “When the princesses first fought Discord, they turned him into stone for a thousand years. When he returned and tried to reclaim Equestria, Twilight Sparkle and the mane six turned him to stone with the Elements of Harmony,” She said.
Senor Butterscotch gave her an odd look. “And? You don’t have the Elements of Harmony, so I’ve won.”
Sunny took a deep breath, then another, the fire returning to her chest. Suddenly she lowered her head, her horn sparked to life, and she shot another beam at him. He yelped and jumped out of the way.
“Oh buck no! I’m not getting sent across town… Again…” He landed with a clack of his hooves, all except one. The thud of stone against concrete made his ears perk, and he looked down.
Sure enough, one of his back legs had been turned to stone. It was the one that had been blue-ish grey with a silver hoof, so visually it looked almost the same. But physically, he was numb from the thigh down.
Senor Butterscotch looked up with a gulp, just in time to see Sunny lighting up her horn again. He managed to teleport away just in time to avoid her fire.
“No!” Sunny yelled, stomping a hoof when she saw that he’d escaped. “We need to search everywhere! He’s extremely dangerous and we can’t let him hurt anypony else!” She said to her friends, who nodded.
“He’s probably going to need some time to adjust to the stone leg, so we might be able to find him on time!” She said.
Sunny told Izzy and Hitch to gather Zip and Pip, after they left, she made sure everypony in hiding was okay. Then she rallied together several groups of ponies, intent on tracking down Senor Butterscotch and disposing of him.
Meanwhile, Senor Butterscotch found himself in a familiar cave. His breaths came out ragged and heavy, soon the stench of urine filled his nostrils.
“Buck that stuck up little-” He stomped his hoof on the ground, then began marching back and forth. “And BUCK this stupid pony body, you’d think the Spirit of Chaos wouldn’t wet himself in the face of danger!”
After a moment he gathered his wits enough to calm down. He took a deep breath, then immediately regretted it as she started choking.
“Okay, step one, clean myself up. Step two, run. Step three,” On the third step, he paused, looking up at the ceiling. “Why am I talking to myself?”
He shook his head, reminding himself to focus. Once he had a sensible plan, he stepped outside the cave. The golden rays of the setting sun showed through the trees, casting long ghastly shadows over him. Well, that was certainly unnerving.
It didn’t take much effort to teleport to the lake, he did end up right under the waterfall though. Oh well, at least he already felt cleaner.
After spending a couple of minutes grooming himself, he waded through the water until he reached the edge. After that he had a good long shake, then he teleported to the place he believed was the farthest from Maretime Bay: The campsite. It wasn’t that far from the cave, but the more used trails were in the opposite direction.
He looked at it, forlorn. The supplies looked like it’d been rifled through by a couple of bears, and the tent was half collapsed with holes in the sides. Well, that marked this place off the list of resting areas.
For some reason, Senor Butterscotch felt nostalgic for the day he’d killed those campers. How long ago was that now? Two months? It had been three months since T.U.E.S. Day, at least he thought that was true. Time was still difficult for him.
He suddenly remembered his sword! He’d dropped it somewhere when he learned to levitate himself, he’d been so excited that he’d forgotten about it entirely. He frowned, where had that been? Then he got an idea, he closed his eyes and pictured his sword.
Poof! It appeared, he was almost overjoyed, until he noticed how neat the blade was. It was still made out of stone, but his sword’s blade had all kinds of nicks and scratches. This was not his sword, it was a replica, buck. He de-summoned the fake, deciding that he needed to find his sword before he left.
While searching for his sword, he kept his eyes and ears alert for danger. He hated that he now feared Sunny Starscout, but he really didn’t wanna get turned to stone.
His ears swiveled to the left and he froze, two feminine voices could be heard in the distance. He lowered himself in the brush, staying completely still as they approached.
“I told you we were lost, now the suns gone down and we’re still not at the campsite!” One pony said, who was decidedly not Sunny.
“We’re not lost! We’re just, um, taking a shortcut,” Said the other, who was also not Sunny.
He lit his horn, preparing to attack. Ruby eyes. His magic fizzled out as he became uncomfortably aware of his stone leg, and how much he could not feel it.
“What was that?” The first voice asked, both mares stopping.
Buck. He thought to himself.
“Hello? Is anypony out there?” The second asked, he could tell she was facing his direction now.
Senor Butterscotch took a slow, deep breath. Then an idea crossed his mind, and he smirked. He stood from the bushes, and casually trotted out onto the trail.
The two mares gasped when they saw him, both taking a couple of steps back.
His horn alit before they could react, but instead of violently murdering them, he merely turned their manes green.
The two friends looked at each other, then they looked at themselves. They both screamed in unison, running back the way they came with their ears pulled back and their green tails tucked between their legs.
Senor Butterscotch snickered, then he started giggling, then he burst out laughing. He felt his magic fluctuate, and his ears perked. So that’s chaos magic, hm.
“Could I do anything?” He wondered aloud, his crimson eyes trailing up to the twinkling stars above.
