Chapter 1: Leaving Xibalba

Within this plane of suffering and fear, where the trees are twisted and thorny lifeless beams and the water is stagnant toxic slime, lies a high mountain with a vast network of caves and catacombs. Deep underneath the mountain's surface, was a large room with cave formations of various forms. The entire room was formed in a way that it looked like a king's hall. The ceiling was covered with large dark bats that only lived in Xibalba. In the farthest end of the chamber was a giant stone throne with a bizarre being sitting on the throne.
Sitting on the throne was the one and only Camazotz, one of the Mayan gods that ruled Xibalba and the god of bats, the night, and sacrifice. He was worshipped by his very own own cult among the Zapotec people of Mesoamerica. He fit the basic description the Zapotecs gave him. He had the head and face of a bat with a humanoid body, a giant pair of leathery wings are part of his arms, dark gray skin, a coating of black fur adoring his back, and was dressed in the attire of Mayan royalty. He had a golden chest piece, a red cloth wrapped around his legs, and a crown with black feathers atop his head. He was looking at the floor with a bored expression.
"Are you okay, Lord Camazotz?" one of his bats asked him.
"It's just that it's another boring day here in Xibalba, guys" Camazotz replied with a sigh. "It's been nothing but boring around here for the past few hundred years".
There was good reason for the bat god's boredom. Ever since the various groups that made up the great empires of Mesoamerica were wiped out by the Catholic conquistadors, the gods of the Mayans and Aztecs haven't had much to do these days. Nowadays, all they do is sit around and watch over their realms. Whenever they actually take the time to actually do their jobs as gods, the other gods just laugh at you for doing things for mortals who don't even worship and fear you.
Camazotz turned his luminous red eyes upwards towards his bat servants. "What's going on in the mortal realm?"
In response, the bats in Camazotz's hall brought their dark master his special mirror to allow him to peer into the mortal realm. The glass was lined with gold and the glass currently showed the bat god's face. To view the goings-on in the mortal world, he needed to scratch the Zapotec words for the human world onto the glass. The image in the mirror changed to that of the human world.
The image before him was that of the American city of Canterlot according to the sign outside the city. Despite him speaking K'iche and Zapotec, he had an understanding of all human languages. He was dumbfounded and surprised by the technology the humans had created over the centuries. He remembered the day when simply building a stone temple was the biggest accomplishment of a civilization's existence.
As Camazotz moved through the city with his mirror, he tapped the glass to be able to look inside the buildings. As he looked, Camazotz noticed that one of the buildings he saw was some form of home for a human family.
Camazotz was suddenly startled by the sound of a female human screaming. Camazotz covered his large ears in pain.
"What the Xibalba is that unholy sound?!" he shrieked.
He looked at the mirror to find the source of the scream. He saw what looked like a grown male human swinging a sweeping tool of some kind at something in a dark room. Camazotz began to laugh hysterically from the idea of this full-grown man screaming like a woman.
"Did this grown man make that scream? That's actually hilarious!" Camazotz cried with a laughing fit.
The Xibalba bats roosting above him were shocked with glee. It had been literally centuries since they heard their master laugh like that. The last time he did was when one of the mortals sacrificed to him pissed on himself and the priest during a sacrificial ritual. It was nice to hear their master's laughter echoing through the cavern hall.
Camazotz was having the most fun he'd had in centuries. Mortals were so much more amusing than he'd remembered. He had to continue watching this mortal to see what it was he was swinging the cleaning thing at. But what he saw was a sight that made him replace his amusement with anger.
Apparently, this mortal male was swinging his cleaning implement at a small bat that had somehow gotten into the man's house. The poor creature was flying away from the man while trying to find a way out of the house. The man was swinging that cleaning tool around like a brainless fool just hoping he'd hit the smaller and faster bat. The bat was effortlessly dodging the foolish man's swings.
"Look at the way he's swinging that tool around! If an army were to invade the city, there's no way he'd be able to defend his home from trained warriors!" Camazotz raged at the man.
"But not only that, he's trying to harm one of my beloved bats!!" he continued to rage.
"Shining! What are you doing?!" a female voice called from the mirror.
Camazotz turned his attention back to the mirror to see the source of the female voice. He moved his perception to the top of a set of stairs to reveal a young human girl.
She was a petite young thing with dark purple hair with a streak of pink running through it and shining lavender eyes. Her attire was some kind of form-fitting white robe that only came down to her waist and a pair of what looked like leg coverings that was made out of some really soft fabric. Her eyes were adorned with a bizarre object containing glass lenses. Camazotz was dumbstruck.
This girl was beautiful! He found that he couldn't take her eyes of of her. He watched her go down the stairs and wrestle the tool out of the stupid male's hands.
"What are you doing?" she asked the older male.
"I'm trying to get rid of a bat that had flown in through the window, Twilight!" the older male cried.
"Then just open the doors and windows until the bat flies out!" the girl named Twilight shouted.
Then this Twilight girl opened the door to their home and the bat eventually flew right out. She then closed the door and turned to her apparent older brother.
"If this ever happens again, just open the doors and windows. The bat will eventually fly right out. The bat was far more afraid of you than you were of him" Twilight said.
"What? Are bats your favorite animal, now?" the brother said
"Yes! Bats are really fascinating animals" Twilight replied. "In fact, did you know that the Mayans had a bat god?"
Now this girl had Camazotz's full attention. She knew about him? She actually knew about him? It had been several hundred years since anyone ever even referenced his existence. And she appreciated bats. His precious children. And she had the face of a goddess to boot. Camazotz sighed as he looked at Twilight.
"Wow. I have to meet this Twilight" Camazotz said.
The bats in the hall were shocked.
"But Master! You want to see a mortal girl?! You'd have to go to the mortal realm to do that!" one of the bats cried.
"Besides, why would you want to see a mortal girl?! You're an immortal god! You have duties here in Xibalba!" another one of the bats said.
Camazotz looked up at his subordinates and gave them a glare. The talking bats shivered at their master's glare. He'd never glared at them like that. He even bared his fangs at them!
"What duties do I have down here?! There's literally nothing for me to do anymore!" Camazotz shouted.
He waved his wing around him to prove his point. "Look around! No new souls of the dead are coming down here! No souls to test so they can finally move on to the afterlife. No damned souls to torment! I've been doing nothing but sit on my throne in boredom for nearly five hundred years!"
Camazotz then turned back to the image of Twilight in his mirror. He gently caressed the image of Twilight's hair with one of his claws.
"As for this girl, she's simply amazing! She loves my children and knows of my existence. I have to meet her and maybe make her into a priestess of mine. I could rebuild my cult in the modern world" Camazotz said.
"But to meet her, you'd have to leave Xibalba!" a bat said.
The bat god smiled. "Now there's an idea! I guess I'll just leave Xibalba"
"Will Hun-Came and Vucub-Came allow that?" a bat asked.
Hun-Came and Vucub-Came were the two Mayan death gods that governed Xibalba. They'd send some souls Camazotz's way so he would test their mettle in order to achieve a path to the afterlife. However, since the Mayan Empire collapsed, those two hadn't been doing anything these days. Camazotz was sure they wouldn't mind him going to the mortal realm, if they even noticed he was gone at all.
"Oh please! Those two wouldn't even notice a fly if it was right in front of their faces" Camazotz retorted.
The bats all looked at their master with pleading looks on their faces. Camazotz sighed.
"Don't worry. I'll take a human form once I'm in the human world" the bat god said.
That seemed to assuage the bats' worries. It was nice to see that the bats all cared about their master.
"Well, if you ever need anything, my lord, just summon us" a bat said.
Camazotz stood up from his throne and stretched his wings. He could feel the joints in his wings cracking and popping with the strectching. Not flying for hundreds of years did a number on the joints. After a few practice flaps, Camazotz shot off into the air and flew out of his cavern home.
As he flew through the perpetually-dark sky of Xibalba, he made his way to one of the few places in the world that acted as a passage to the mortal world.
Camazotz eventually found what looked like a cave entrance with a glowing red light coming from within. In Mayan mythology, caves acted as gateways to Xibalba. This was true in some respect. While some caves acted as gateways, only the gods could enter and exit Xibalba through caves. Otherwise, they're just regular caves.
"Mortal world, here I come!" Camazotz shouted before diving through the opening.
Camazotz closed his eyes and smiled at the opportunity to meet Twilight. He had never been more excited about anything else in thousands of years.
He would show Twilight the true beauty of night.
Author's Note
Hey guys! I hope you enjoy this new story! I love the idea of a literal god interacting with MLP characters. Especially one of my favorite gods from mythology, Camazotz. I'm trying to include as much Mayan mythology in this story as I can.
