Chapter 2: The First Night
Twilight placed another wood wall, wiping the sweat off of her forehead. She and her friends were putting the finishing touches on the rough house they had constructed, just in time for night to fall. As she continued to place walls, she thought about how weird things were in this new world.
All I did was get close to the workbench, and I wanted to make something. Out of nowhere, in thin air, a list of things I could make appeared. I moved it around, looking at all the stuff, and decided to make a wooden broadsword. And then, poof — it just appeared in my inventory. That’s just not normal! Ugh... Well, I gave the broadsword to Fluttershy, and made some walls out of the wood in my inventory. And now, here I am, placing those walls. I’m glad we’re almost done with the house, it’s almost night time. Once I’m done with this, I’ll go and place a door over in that gap to the outside. Wait, why didn’t we do that first? That way we would be more secure... Oh well, no harm done, I guess...
*THUMP*
Twilight looked over from the wall she was placing. Rarity was lying on the ground. She fainted AGAIN?! Bemused, Twilight looked up at the empty doorway.
“AHHHHHHH!”
Standing at the door was a bipedal like Jake, but this one was green and decaying. That’s right, it was actually decaying. Looking at it more intensely, Twilight saw some white text above it’s head. Zombie 45/45. Not wanting to assume automatic hostility, Twilight started to approach it slowly.
“Hello?”
The zombie touched Rarity and dealt her a hefty amount of damage.
“Excuse, me? EXCUSE ME? You. Do. Not. Hurt. My. Friends!” Fluttershy yelled from across the one-roomed house, unsheathing her new wooden sword and and charging over towards the zombie.
The zombie hit Rarity again, unperturbed. Then Fluttershy hit it with the full strength of her broadsword. She pushed him out the door and into the night, landing hit after hit.
“Fluttershy, wait! It’s dark outside!” Fluttershy just kept going, attracting more zombies towards her. Ugh. Guess I’ll have to go out there. Twilight crafted another two broadswords and twenty one torches. She tossed a sword to Pinkie. “Catch! I’ll need you to cover my back while I place torches.”
“Okie dokie lokie!”
“AJ, Rainbow, and Rarity, finish this house as fast as you can, then get yourselves some weapons. This is going to be a long night.” With that, Twilight readied the torches in her mouth and put the sword where she could reach it easily. She had noticed earlier that she only ever had enough room to use one object at a time, but could place up to nine other objects where she could reach them and switch between objects almost instantly. She believed that this would prove helpful later on.
Twilight and Pinkie sallied forth from the empty doorway, with Pinkie in front. Twilight placed a torch and they moved on. They walked to where it began to darken again, then Twilight placed another torch. They continued in this manner all across the flat of the pony-made plain as the got closer and closer to the hill. Still no sign of Fluttershy... She must have gone over the hill. We have to help her! As they crested the hill, Twilight noticed some shapes flying above her.
“Pinkie! Above you!”
Pinkie looked up just in time to see a dark shape diving at her. She jumped and swung her broadsword, hitting the beast. As it bounced off her sword, Twilight brought the light closer. She planted a torch in the ground and pulled out a broadsword. The shape dived again. This time, they waited until it got close enough for them to see. It was a disgusting, giant flying eye as big as their heads. The text above it read Demon Eye 54/60. Pinkie and and Twilight both swung in unison, damaging the Demon Eye further. They kept attacking until it exploded and showered them with pieces of eye, which quickly disappeared. Twilight got a lens and some copper coins. She looked at Pinkie.
“There have to be more of those out there. We have to go help Fluttershy!”
“Yep! We have to protect her from those meanie things!”
Pinkie continued to talk, but Twilight zoned out. She started advancing with the torches. Then, at base of another hill, she saw a large group of moving shapes. Assuming that this was Fluttershy, Twilight charged ahead. As she neared, she heard the sounds of hacking, slashing, and hurting. Then she heard Fluttershy call out.
“Help! There’s too many!”
Twilight tried to go faster, but the physics of the land kept her at an agonizingly slow pace. Just then, a light flashed out of the sky and landed next to Fluttershy, destroying all the zombies and eyes it touched. For the second it was on the ground, it lit up the area. Then it flew into Fluttershy’s pack, plunging her into darkness. She was temporarily dazzled until a Demon Eye flew down and hit her, taking her life points to a new low. Before she could react, a zombie that had escaped the star’s wrath hit her. All the items exploded from her and she disappeared. Text appeared at the bottom of Twilight’s vision:
Fluttershy’s entrails were ripped out by Zombie.
“NOOOOOOO!!!”
Twilight walked as fast as she could over to the spot where Fluttershy had perished. She picked up all of Fluttershy’s belongings, including the Fallen Star which had saved her life but was also the cause of her death. She looked around for a body, but none was there. Pinkie arrived soon after, her eyes becoming as wide as dinner plates.
“No... no... she can’t be... NO!”
“She is, Pinkie. There’s nothing we can do.”
Twilight broke down on the spot and cried. Pinkie’s hair deflated and she stared off into the horizon. Pinkie’s sadness turned to rage when she saw the zombies that had taken her friend. Bloodlust gleamed in her eyes. Letting out a savage yell, Pinkie attacked the zombies with a scary ferocity. She slew the zombies and chased after the Demon Eyes, slaying them one by one. When there was nothing left to slay, she started pacing back and forth. Twilight got up and patted her on the back.
“It’s time to go, Pinkie. We have to tell the others.”
Pinkie only nodded roboticly.
Twilight turned and began to walk back up the hill. As she crested it, she ran into another pony.
“Hi girls. Did you get my stuff?”
Twilight started at the apparition in front of her. Fluttershy was alive and well. She was standing in front of her.
“I.. but... you.. the zombies... the Eyes... YOU DIED!!!”
“Yeah. It was weird. But then I appeared back at the house without my stuff, so I thought I should come and get it back.”
Twilight could only stare at Fluttershy. Pinkie, on the other hand, was more than willing to accept the fact that her friend was alive. Her mane poofed back up and she tackled her with a big hug.
“Fluttershy! You’re okay!”
Wrestling an elated Pinkie off of her, Fluttershy turned back to Twilight.
“Rainbow Dash had an explanation for what happened. She called it ‘respawn’ or something like that. We should go and talk to her. Also, Rarity was really excited because she figured out how to make a bow and some arrows. She wanted to show you! Oh, and the house looks great now.”
The three ponies turned back towards the house. Twilight looked up at the moon. It was already three fourths of the way through the sky. Time here travels quickly.
When they finally arrived back at the house, it was indeed completed. It was a small, one roomed cottage with two doors and ample torchlight. A furnace burned in the background next to the crafting table. The ponies listened while Rainbow Dash tried to explain respawn.
“It’s like you die but you don’t, you go back to a checkpoint. You can’t die forever, but every time you do die there’s a penalty of time spent dead.”
“So you don’t die.”
“Well... It’s not that you don’t die it’s more like...”
“So you do die?”
“No. You do and you don’t. It’s complicated, okay? Like, you die, but you... I mean, you... I...” she stuttered, before sighing. “I give up.”
Just then there was a knocking on the door. Twilight went to go see who it was, opening it.
“Hi th—OH SWEET CELESTIA!”
Three zombies walked through the doorway. Twilight managed to hit all of them at once with her sword. Fluttershy hit them again. An arrow smashed into one of them. Another arrow. More sword hits. More arrows. Eventually all three zombies were dead.
“Woo hoo! Teamwork!”
After closing the door to ward off any more creatures of the night, bro-hoofs were shared all around. Then Rainbow spoke up.
“Is it just me or... or can the rest of you see through the walls too? Like, if you concentrate really hard...”
Twilight concentrated really hard on looking through the walls. Sure enough, she could see outside. She looked down. She could see a couple hoofs into the dirt, enough to know that there was a deposit of shiny orange metal under the house. Well. More weird physics. Awesome.
“Girls, there’s copper under the house. We should go get it.”
“Well it’s good that the moon just set and that the sun is rising then, isn’t it?”
