Chapter 3: Getting Organized

As the world shifted from day to night, Fluttershy noticed music playing in the background. Funny, I never noticed that before. Exiting the door, she saw a green slime. A smile crept onto her face.

“Fluttershy, don’t. We need you over here.”

Fluttershy slowly turned away from the slime, disappointment evident in her expression. As soon as she came back into the house, Twilight began discussing the agenda for the day.

“Okay. So, I’m not tired. Are any of you tired?” Heads and manes shook around her. “At all? Even in the slightest bit?” Twilight’s second query also came back negative. “Okay then. Same here. Since it appears we don’t currently need sleep, lets keep going.

“Applejack, I need you to figure out everything you can through Jake. Ask him about ‘crafting’, do anything you can to get any information. I also need you to build other work stations and increase our supply of arrows. See if there’s a furnace or something we can use.

“Pinkie, I need you and Fluttershy to explore a little. Go right and left, but not too far. Take a sample of any new object you see.

“Try to keep the slime killing to a minimum, Fluttershy. But, if there’s a hostile new creature, kill it and see what we can do with it.

“While you’re doing that, Rainbow Dash and I are going to go get that copper, then keep digging down to see if we can find anything else.

“Rarity, I want you to work on expanding the house. Do what you can with what we have. Don’t worry too much on how it looks. By the end of the day, I want each of us to have our own rooms. I also want Jake to have a room on a separate floor.

“Rainbow and I are going to hollow out the area under the house, so make that a room to keep our ‘crafting’ stations. AJ will help you once she gets the information and weapon supply taken care of. Any questions? Good. We meet back at dusk. Let’s all stay inside tonight, ok?”

With that done, Twilight stepped outside the door and started digging. Rainbow placed platforms over the now-empty space next to the door, then joined her.

Pinkie Pie had never realized how much she bounced until she couldn’t bounce anymore. While in Equestria she defied every law of physics known to anypony, here she was confined by physics. And she didn’t like it. She trudged along at the constant pace she was confined to in this world, never able to go faster, never able to go slower. That REALLY annoyed her. Her jumps didn’t help either. They were almost always a constant arc, always the same height. She could change direction in midair or stop forward momentum altogether, but that was it. All of her actions followed rules. All of her actions made sense. And it was a thorn in her side.

But Pinkie decided to temporarily ignore the thorn. She was exploring, and exploring was fun! New places, new friends (hopefully).

Gel (2)

Pinkie walked into some gel that Fluttershy hadn’t picked up. Pinkie looked ahead and saw Fluttershy viciously attacking a green slime. What happened to her? She was the sweetest little thing... But this land has turned her into a killing machine. She just kills all of those things, not caring about it... Will that happen to all of us? Will we all lose sight of what we are? Can I throw parties here?

Rainbow Dash helped Twilight mine out another vein of copper. They had dug out a room-sized hole under the house, and had found a natural cave a little ways off. This ‘seeing-through-the-ground’ thing was really weird. It wasn’t x-ray vision, but somehow Dash could tell what types of blocks were in her immediate vicinity. And it wasn’t just a feeling — she could visualize them too. It was just odd. It bothered her. This land seriously wasn’t normal. It had weird rules that confined her. Maybe video game characters felt this way, too. She had never thought what it would be like to be stuck in a video game...

I don’t like being a video game character. This sucks. Suddenly. a slime jumped from the unexplored black depths of the cave. As she mechanically bisected it with her sword, she reminded herself to plant more torches so that she would know where everything was. She looked over at Twilight. The egghead seemed to be infatuated with a plant that blinked every so often. Twilight swung a sword at it, harvesting the plant.

“It’s called Blinkroot!” she exclaimed, happiness evident in her features.

Congratulations. Remind me where the part was that said I should care?

Rainbow went back to placing torches and advancing down the cave. This spelunking, though occasionally interesting, was very boring. Place torch. Move forward. Maybe jump once or twice over a hole or up an incline. Place another torch. Move forward. Same thing, over and over again. Barely paying attention to her surroundings, Rainbow kept going. She half-heartedly attempted to jump over a large hole, but didn’t make it. Her wings refusing to move, Rainbow’s screams echoed back to her as she fell down a large hole. When she finally slammed into the stone at the bottom, she received ninety-nine points of fall damage. The impact bore a disturbing lack of pain, considering it almost killed her, but fear quickly crawled into the space where pain should have been. Ohmygosh that was close... She placed a torch, lighting up the dark cavern just in time to see a skeleton wearing a miner’s helmet charging at her.

Rainbow Dash’s flailing about was finally stopped by Undead Miner.

Applejack had completed her mission. Jake had a crafting thingy that he let her use after she listened to a random bit of information. She didn’t exactly know what this thing was, but it told her what she could make with certain materials. It was a box, but at the same time it was just a flat square. It was physical and not physical at the same time. Applejack decided that what it was didn’t matter — science was not a field she excelled in. Unless it was apple science. But as far as she could tell, there were no apples here, so she stuck to building. Building she understood. Now that she had a semi-reliable source of crafting information, she turned to go help Rarity. The drama queen was being a pain in the flank, complaining whenever possible about the work and how she was going to get dirty.

“Look darlin’, Ah know you don’t wanna get dirty, but we all have ta do what we need ta to get this place running. Besides, look at yerself — you’ve been workin’ for hours and you’re not dirty or sweaty. Workin’ some more ‘pparently ain’t gonna change that. That’s just the way this land works.”

“But it’s so--”

“No buts. We’re in this together. All of us. And we got ta do our part.”

Rarity rolled her eyes, “Fine!”

Applejack left the house and went to go collect more wood for Rarity. She trusted Rarity to make new rooms and decorate, but she knew it would take some time to get the prissy unicorn to actually go outside and collect the needed materials herself. What was with her, anyway? The dirt in this world didn’t stick to your hooves or your coat or mane — chunks it stayed in a uniform block-shape, and those individual blocks never broke apart. Rarity had absolutely no reason to be fussing so much, but apparently she wouldn’t listen to reason. So, Applejack did it herself. Having harvested all the trees in the valley, Applejack decided to go over the hill to the right. She harvested a number of trees, collecting the acorns and watching out for slimes. Having completed her tree-cutting, she returned to the house. Rarity had added two rooms and was working on a third. Applejack left her the wood, then went off to plant some trees with the acorns she’d collected. As she passed through the main room, she saw some text appear at the bottom of her vision.

Rainbow Dash’s flailing about was finally stopped by Undead Miner.

Applejack stopped and stared at the text as it slowly faded. Rainbow died? Didn’t see that comin’... As she completed that thought, Rainbow Dash suddenly appeared in the main room of the house.

“Hey AJ!”

“Rainbow! What happened?”

“I fell. Almost died. Then a skeleton finished me off. I hope Twilight gets my stuff...” Suddenly, text appeared at the bottom of everypony’s vision.

Twilight Sparkle: Hey, does this work? Can everypony see this?

Twilight Sparkle: I think I figured out how to communicate with everypony from afar...

Twilight Sparkle: I’ll explain how it works later. I got RD’s stuff, but everypony needs to

Twilight Sparkle: come home. For some reason I can only put a few words here at a

Twilight Sparkle: time...

Applejack started at where the words had been, “What in tarnation? Rainbow, did you see that?”

“Yep. That was weird. Well, everypony’s coming home, right?”

A voice rang out from the other side of the house, “No! I’m not done yet! They can’t come home yet! I still have three more rooms!”

“Chill, Rarity. It’s okay. Twilight won’t expect it to be done anyway.”

“Let’s go help her, Dash.”

The two ponies joined Rarity to help her finish up the rooms while they waited for Twilight, Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy to return.

A/N: Huge thanks to my editor Garuuspike. He majorly redid some sections, making them much better than I could ever have made them. He also formatted Twilight's opening speech from the wall of text I had written it in... Go check out his page!
