My Little Pokémon: Grander World
Volo on the Move
Previous ChapterNext ChapterGalar. Circhester Bay. Afternoon.
"A-Ah!" Sonia jumped, surprised to see him so suddenly. "W-Who are you?"
Volo smirked, keeping his eyes on her. "I'm Volo. And I couldn't help but notice your little trinket here." He pointed at the shard. "Where did you get that?"
"I know who you are...Or at least...I've heard of you!" Sonia gasped, catching Volo off guard. "You're that man! Volo!"
"Hm...? How did you figure out my name? Did someone tell you?" Volo asked, raising his brows. "Now I'm curious. Who told you about me?"
"Professor Oak told me and my Grandmother all about you... You're the one who's after the shards right?" Sonia asked, feeling intimidated by his presence.
"Oh ho~ So someone from the other side has been watching me. Or at least they have information about me. That's interesting..." Volo uttered before chuckling. "So my quest for the shards has been made public to a few more people, I see."
Sonia stepped back a bit. Her mind immediately recalled when she and her Grandma learned about Volo's existence from what Professor Oak got from someone else.
Weeks Ago. Postwick. Magnolia's Lab. Day.
It was weeks ago when this happened. Professor Oak had called up Sonia and her grandmother, Magnolia, letting them know that there was something important they should hear about. It was on this day that they were told about both Lena and Volo. The people from the past. And the one he got this information from was from Ash and by extension another professor. Kukui.
"So right now, Kukui is keeping some of the shards with him for safekeeping. Ash left him in charge of protecting the Ground and Steel Shards while Lena's group apparently have the Flying and Fairy Shards." Oak explained to Magnolia. "And I suppose the Fire Shard too in a way, even though that one is hidden somewhere in Alola."
"Incredible. To think that these powerful items have been flung through time..." Sonia gawked when listening in on this.
"Ash made it very clear that we should never bring more than 5 near each other, otherwise a powerful reaction will occur, much like what happened to the waters near Lilycove City. As long as we keep it to a minimum, we'll be fine."
"Do the other Professors know about this?" Magnolia questioned.
"Oh, yes. I made sure to tell Rowan right away. And he went straight to telling Sycamore and so on. We've all agreed on the same thing by now. All of this is far too important to pass up on. Not only that, but this all explains the Time Leaks I've been seeing in that other world. Once all those shards are restored and returned to where they belong, I can imagine those leaks will fade away and it will all be normal."
Now Professor Oak had a clear answer to the Time Leaks back at the Human World. Most likely, Lena and Volo's presence led to them opening up even though they showed up a bit later than even Hisuian Zorua.
"Are there any shards here in Galar for us to find? If there are, we'll keep an eye on them." Magnolia added, already planning on keeping some of the shards until further notice.
"Glad you asked!" Oak raised his finger. "I heard that Volo character uses a special bracelet to track down the shards, which is pretty nifty. So, we Professors have been putting our heads together to come up with something similar to that. Right now, we're having some scientists build that device for us."
"A device that can track them down just like the bracelet? How does the bracelet work exactly?" Sonia inquired.
"From what I've been told, Volo probably made the shards react to that bracelet and now anything related to it makes it react. The bracelet in question is an old magical item from Equestria that hadn't been used in centuries until Volo picked it up recently. It seems to work well after being inactive for so long."
"Well, that sounds great! If we have that, then we'll know where to find the shards too." Magnolia smiled.
"Exactly. Until then, Kukui will keep the Ground Shard and Steel Shard safe, while Lena will hold onto the Flying Shard and Fairy Shard. But there's one other problem. Even if we manage to find some of them, Volo could come straight to either of us, tracking our labs down with that bracelet. We'll need to sort that problem out before it can escalate. Perhaps entrust the rest to someone."
"He's that dangerous, is he?" said Sonia as Oak nodded.
"Very dangerous. In my old age, someone like him could be very troublesome. Ah, to be young again. Then I wouldn't have to worry too much." Oak sighed while smiling, feeling nostalgic.
"I can keep a hold of some of them if that's the case." Sonia would lean forward, volunteering to keep some of the shards. "I'm willing to keep them safe for you if he comes over."
"Sonia!" Magnolia was surprised by her sudden action. "You shouldn't say such things! This is far too important!"
"But Grandma...I'm already working hard as a new Pokemon Professor so let me give this a shot. Besides, maybe I'll run into Ash and his friends along the way. We can meet up and share these shards between each other."
"Hmmm...well alright then. If you think you can handle it, then go ahead. Just try to be careful, okay?" Magnolia agreed with her idea.
"That sounds wonderful. You have a lot of experience ahead of you, Sonia, but perhaps you're a bit too eager at the moment. If you can find just one shard for us, that would be splendid. You're the youngest professor we've had thus far next to Twilight anyways, so entrusting things to the younger generation isn't out of the ordinary for us."
And that led to today, where Sonia came into contact with Volo himself. She didn't expect this at all, making her heart race when seeing the man here before her eyes. She could tell right away that Volo was the man she needed to avoid.
"No mistaking it...You're Volo without a doubt. You look a lot like Champion Cynthia." Sonia narrowed her eyes.
"Hah...So you mean to tell me more of you are trying to deny my heritage from the past?" Volo chuckled. "How unfortunate. I was hoping it would be something known by few and then I'd be done with all of this as soon as possible, returning to my time. But I guess that's not going to happen anytime soon."
"..." Sonia would continue backing away as she then saw Volo move forward, gradually approaching her.
"If you are someone of understanding, you'll give what is rightfully mine. So that I can eventually put this all behind my and return to the past. Or...maybe I won't have to return at all." Volo smirked, causing Sonia to feel even more nervous than usual. "You wouldn't let someone like me stay here, would you? Not when I have my own time to return to."
"I don't think so. I already know what you've done so far and I won't let you get even a single one. You're far too dangerous even for this time period. The damage you've caused is something I can't ignore." Sonia declared, holding the shard close to her.
"Hmph. Shows what you know, girl. My ultimate dream is being slowed down by these unnecessary obstacles. I'd rather not deal with anyone or anything new that could halt my process any longer. If I do, I'll make sure they won't bother me ever again." The implications behind that sentence were very much ominous, sending chills down Sonia's spine.
Volo was no fool. He already figured out that he wouldn't be able to take on everyone in this time period. Not yet. While there were people who knew his existence and were preparing for him, there were still a lot who didn't. And that was enough for Volo to act accordingly.
Right now, Volo's main concern was obtaining the shards. That was all. And with Sonia having one of them, she would need to be dealt with swiftly before she could inform others about this.
Sonia would then take-off running, sprinting off into the distance while Volo would just keep walking, not even bothering to rush. With the bracelet, it wasn't necessary. All he needed to do was follow the light of the compass.
As Sonia continued to run, she noticed that the light of the compass was still on her, letting her know that Volo was hot on her trail. She had to find somewhere to hide before he caught up to her. There was no way she was going to fight him alone. She needed to bring back up to deal with him.
Sonia needed to lose him first. It didn't matter how long it took for her to escape. She needed to buy some time before Volo would catch up. As long as she informs someone else, Sonia believed she would be safe.
But of course, Volo wouldn't allow that. He would stop walking for a moment, suddenly holding out the Dragon Shard, causing its power to activate. A large aura of blue energy shot out of the shard, flying in the air above it, catching Sonia's attention as she stopped moving to see what was happening.
Volo continued to focus, channeling his own innate power through the shard, making it glow brighter than before. He was using the shard's power to move the isolated lands in Circhester Bay. The rookie Pokemon Professor felt her balance be disrupted as the land she was on was would start moving around.
This was no ordinary wind either. The entire land was changing directions. Volo's magic was controlling this entire island of ice, forcing it to move closer to the shores of the lake. The other islands would also change their paths, each heading towards the shore, making it harder for her to get away.
"What?! How is he doing this?!" Sonia gasped, looking back at Volo who kept his eyes on the shard. "He's moving these things around with just that shard!
As the island got closer to the shores, Sonia would run towards the edge, only to feel the ground beneath her shake a bit, almost throwing her off balance. If she weren't careful, she would fall right into the water below.
Sonia would look back, seeing Volo continue to approach her. He was just a few feet away from her now, slowly but surely approaching her while smirking.
"It's my right as a descendant of the Celestica People to harness the power of these shards and even make them whole again. But if I'm going to accomplish my goals, you and the rest must not get in my way." Volo declared.
Sonia didn't respond, only running off to escape. She would jump onto another island that was close by, hoping that would make things a bit easier. As she did so, Volo would once again use the shard's power, summoning Draconic energy from below the water, causing the frozen island she was previously standing on to break apart, shattering into many pieces.
The water would turn cold, making it hard for anyone to swim in this area. Sonia barely managed to make it to the next island without getting caught up in that attack. However, she couldn't help but realize that even though she was far away from Volo, she was still being followed. The light of the compass was still visible to her eyes, indicating that Volo was tracking her down.
Volo continued to channel more of his power, making the shard glow with greater intensity. Once again, the isolated lands would move, gradually approaching the shores. And soon enough, the other islands would get closer and closer to the one Sonia was standing on.
She had to keep moving.
Circhester.
Back at Circhester, news of what happened to the lands over at Circhester Bay spread fast. People soon learned that the several pieces of land were now either disrupted or damaged, making any travelling inconvenient for those who wanted to cross there.
Sci-Twi was already witnessing this commotion from afar, watching people gather around the docks as they talked amongst themselves. They were trying to figure out how to deal with this new problem. Sci-Twi could see some of them try to use their Pokemon to reach the other islands, only for them to fail due to the freezing waters. Plus, the Draconic Energy was around the area, only increasing this difficulty, but it was masked and no longer visible.
Despite being invisible, the energy was very much there, ruining things for the people of Circhester. "What's going on?" Sci-Twi wondered, seeing a lot of people gathered around. "Is there an event or something?"
"The lands have been torn apart. We don't know why though." One explained, looking over at Sci-Twi.
"Torn apart?"
"Yeah. It kinda looks like some big Pokemon came by and attacked them. They're all in a disarray now." Another added. "Whatever it was just distanced us from the other lands with ease. Getting out there won't be as easy as it was at this rate."
"What about Route 8? Can't you all take that one? Or can't you guys travel through the mountains?" Sci-Twi asked, having already used that route when coming here.
"Oh, sure. It's going to be different without the lands though. Usually, we have some ships come through to Circhester Bay and leave back to other places. Now that it's destroyed, our main routes are blocked. We'll have to find other ways to travel around Galar."
"That...that sounds bad." Sci-Twi nodded. "Well...I hope you all get this sorted out soon then."
"Bad news!" Suddenly, one of the townsfolk would come rushing over, yelling at everyone as he got their attention. He made sure to come here as fast as possible, breathing in and out. "The other routes...they've been affected too! All of them!"
"What?!" The crowd gasped as they looked towards the man, shocked at what he just said.
"It's true! I saw it with my own two eyes! Our roads are completely messed up! Some have even been broken beyond repair!" The man cried out. "There's no way we can use them anymore! We're trapped! Trapped in Circhester!"
"You must be kidding!" Someone shouted.
"He's telling the truth. My family and I checked Route 7 and 6, but they're all destroyed. We don't know how, but they're unpassable now!" A female cried out, confirming this statement.
"What should we do?! We're doomed! This is a disaster! What if the rest of us can't get inside?! What then?!" Another questioned, feeling scared.
The people continued to panic, freaking out at this new news. They were all wondering how this could happen to them. Sci-Twi began to worry as she didn't understand what was going on. But it had to be connected to the shards in some way. She knew that Volo was out there somewhere, searching for them too. She was also worried that it might have something to do with Volo using one of the shards.
"Oh, Volo... What did you get yourself into?" Sci-Twi uttered with worry in her voice.
"Sweetie?" Sci-Twi turned to see Melony standing next to her, looking at the crowd before gazing at Sci-Twi. "So you're still here. Oh, dear...Are you going to have trouble getting home?"
"I hope not. I can always just use the Flying Taxi here thankfully. That should be safe." Sci-Twi answered, pointing to the Flying Taxi nearby. However, even that couldn't carry everyone since it was mainly for one person. As it stands now, the people of Circhester were a bit stuck. But Sci-Twi didn't think so. While she was technically stuck, she had her options. "Excuse me!"
"Ah!" Melony would see her run off. "Twilight, sweetie! Where are you going?!"
"Sorry, Ms. Melony! But I need to find my friend!" Sci-Twi apologized as she went through the crowd. "Bulbasaur! Kubfu! Come on, guys!" The Grass-Poison-Type and Fighting-Type would follow her as they all left Circhester.
Sonia was still on the run, managing to leave Circhester Bay and ending up at the shores near Hammerlocke. It took her some time, but she managed to escape Volo and his bracelet.
However, she was unaware that Volo had already gotten to this place. He used the same trick he did before, forcing the lands to move closer to the shore. The only problem was that the land was different here. No longer was it covered in ice.
As Sonia looked back, she didn't notice Volo behind her as he was already approaching. His hand grabbed onto her arm tightly, making her jump in shock. "Ngh! Let go of me!" She cried out, trying to get away. "Let go!"
"Hand it over at once. Give me what is mine." Volo demanded, holding out his other hand. "Now."
"I promised myself I wouldn't let you get even one!" Sonia refused. She would try to break free, but Volo's grip was too strong for her. She couldn't break free of it no matter how much she tried. "Get off me!" She would then bring out one of her Pokemon from her other hand, releasing it in an instant.

"N-No! I'm not giving this to you!" Sonia refused. She would try to break free, but Volo's grip was too strong for her. She couldn't break free of it no matter how much she tried. "Get off me!" She would then bring out one of her Pokemon, releasing it in an instant.
The Pokemon she brought out was none other than Yamper, who growled at Volo. "Yamper! Thunderbolt him!" Sonia commanded.
"Yamp!" Yamper would immediately charge up electricity, firing off a Thunderbolt at Volo. He quickly harnessed the power of the shard, forming a Draconic Shield around him, blocking the attack as the shield absorbed the energy. After stopping the attack, Volo would retaliate, summoning a surge of draconic energy from below the ground, trapping Yamper underneath it as he cried out in pain.
"Yamper!" Sonia gasped, seeing her beloved partner be attacked by that dragonic surge. "Stop this at once! What have you done to Yamper?!"
"I merely defended myself. There's nothing wrong with that." Volo chuckled. "You should really think your moves through next time if you want a chance at beating me. Now give me the shard or else you'll suffer the same fate as that creature."
"Yamper..." Sonia whimpered. Despite being caught in that Dragonic Surge, Yamper was still hanging in there, defying Volo's claims. "Even still...I won't give you this shard!"
Volo would sigh, looking towards Yamper with an unamused look. He then focused on the Dragon Shard, making it glow brighter as he continued to channel its power. This caused Yamper to scream loudly, feeling himself getting struck by more powerful energy, burning him even further.
"Y-Yam!"
"No! Stop hurting him!" Sonia cried out, watching Yamper get hurt. "Stop this right now! He doesn't deserve this!"
"Neither does anyone who gets in my way. As long as you all resist me, this will happen to those you hold dear." Volo said. "And if you keep holding onto that shard, it will only make matters worse for you. I suggest you let go. That way you won't face any consequences."
And yet, Sonia would keep resisting despite Volo's words. Refusing to hand over the shard, she would dig her nails into his palm. With enough force, she'd be able to pry his hand off her. It would also be painful for Volo. So she was willing to endure such a thing just to escape.
However, this angered the man from the past. ""You..." He would use his free hand to grab onto Sonia's arm, holding her tight. "You little brat. I have half a mind to send you flying here and now, but I can't risk damaging that shard in the process." He narrowed his eyes, glaring daggers at Sonia.
Sonia couldn't help but gulp as she felt fear when gazing at his stare. She had no idea what Volo was capable of, but she could tell he wasn't messing around anymore. Yamper continued to struggle underneath that energy, trying to break free before collapsing. The surge soon faded away, allowing Yamper to be free.
"U-Use Play Rough, Yamper! Quick!"
"Yamp!" Once he broke free, Yamper, with all of his might, would use Play Rough, throwing himself forward at Volo. The Draconic Shield he conjured up would suddenly prove to be inefficient as Yamper managed to phase through it, shocking Volo. Yamper tackled into Volo's head, knocking him back a bit.
"It passed through the energy....?!" Volo said to himself while stumbling back. It was at this moment that he realized Play Rough was immune to Dragon Energy, probably because it was a Fairy-Type move. Play Rough was immune to Dragon-type energy in nature, so it didn't matter what kind of draconic shield Volo made. Yamper was still able to pass through it with ease if he used that move once more.
Now free, Sonia would have Yamper go on the offensive once more. She also saw that Play Rough managed to ignore the Dragon Shard's power, allowing her to capitalize on this. "Quick! Use Play Rough again! Hurry!" Sonia commanded.
"Yamper!" The Electric Dog Pokemon cried out as he rushed at Volo. Volo tried to focus his powers to counteract Play Rough, but it was no use. Yamper was already near him, using the attack as he pounced forward. And once again, Volo's guard fell apart as Yamper tackled into his gut, forcing Volo to stumble back.
Play Rough was able to bypass his Draconic Shield thanks to the fact it was a Fairy-Type move. And it was immune to Dragon attacks, which included any form of energy that came from them. If this kept up, then Volo would be done for.
Sonia was starting to see the flaw of such immense power. The Dragon Shard was strong, yes, but it still followed the rules that all Pokemon go by. It has a counter. She could also assume other Fairy-Type moves that are on the more offensive side could do the same.
"Enough of this!" Volo, seeing that the Dragon Shard wasn't helping right now, would hold out one of his Poke Balls, throwing it and summoning what appeared to be Arcanine but different.
"Arcanine!" It was unlike any Arcanine Sonia had ever seen, prompting her to take out her Pokedex.
"Arcanine. The Legendary Pokemon. Hisuian Variant. This form of Arcanine existed 200 years in the past. It snaps at its foes with fangs cloaked in blazing flame. Despite its bulk, it easily feints every which way, leading opponents on a deceptively merry chase as it all but dances around them."
"A Hisuian Arcanine?!" Sonia gasped. "I suppose that tracks. It is from the past after all..."
"Arcanine. Make this quick. Raging Fury!" Volo commanded.
"Arc!" The fiery beast howled, rushing at Yamper, charging up flames within his jaws. "Fury!" He would unleash a powerful burst of flame from his mouth, creating a powerful explosion upon contact with Yamper, leaving nothing in the wake.
"Yamper!" Sonia cried out, watching the dust settle as she feared for her partner. "Yamper, no!" In just one hit, Yamper had been defeated, tumbling on the ground as Sonia would catch him in time. "Yamper, please...Say something!"
"Yamp..." Yamper groaned weakly before falling unconscious. He couldn't handle that attack. But Sonia refused to give up. Even with Volo having a Hisuian Arcanine, she still held onto the shard, keeping it close to herself.
"That was a good effort, but it's not enough. You'll need far more than that to stop me from taking the shard away. Now hand it over or else you will end up like that creature." Volo demanded.
Sonia didn't respond. Instead, she kept on running, hoping to get some distance between them. If she were to bring Yamper back into his ball, then there would be no risk of Volo targeting him again. However, Sonia wasn't aware of the speed of Hisuian Arcanine, so she was shocked to see how fast he was moving, catching up to her in no time at all.
"Make sure you pin her down, Arcanine and force the shard out of her grasp."
Hisuian Arcanine was incredibly fast on his feet, able to keep up with Sonia despite the short distance she gained on him. With one jump, he was able to leap forward, pouncing onto her. Sonia's eyes widened when seeing the figure of Arcanine lean in, ready to bring her down. But before that could even happen, Hisuian Arcanine was then blasted away by what appeared to be a Flaming blast.
Sonia turned towards the direction of where the blast came from, only to see Sunset Shimmer standing there. Specifically, the one who goes by Fiery at times as she stood there with her female Pyroar.
"Heh! Caught this guy red-handed!" She said with a fierce grin. Just as promised, she would come here with her counterpart and a few of her friends just to make things right with Sci-Twi. However, Fiery had something else in mind and that involved Volo. As she promised, she showed up to do just that, finding him here and seeing him for the first time.
Volo narrowed his eyes as Sonia scampered over to her side. He wasn't aware that this was Sunset Shimmer's counterpart, but to him, that didn't matter. What mattered was getting that other shard immediately and once again, he was being interrupted. All the while, Sci-Twi was on the search for him.
As the journey continues.
