"Button!!" A mature and sweet-sounding female voice called out inside a somewhat small house located near the edge of Ponyville. The sound of laser fire could be heard coming from a room at one end of the house.

About ten seconds went by, before the female voice said "Button!!" again, but louder and firmer.

The laser noises continued for a few more seconds, before there was a loud "Dun-Dun!" from inside the room. Then, a few seconds later, the brown door of the room opened, revealing an 18-year-old Earth Pony stallion.

His short coat was a light brown and his mane had somewhat long bangs that hung right above his reddish brown eyes and was a muddy orange color, with streaks of lighter orange in it. His tail was the same color, and reached down to the middle of the rears of his thighs. A white t-shirt clung to his skinny, slightly muscular top, with black trim and a large gray Joycolt on the front, while a pair of black shorts with yellow stripes on the sides sat on his hips. Sitting on the top of his head was a dark orange, pale yellow, and pale orange propellor beanie, with the propellor being bright green.

“What is it Mom?” Button asked his mother as he stood in the doorway, a slightly annoyed look on his face.

“Come here to the kitchen,” Button’s mom called out. “I want you to do something for me,” She said.

Button groaned with disappointment, before he slowly walked out, leaving his door open as he went down the stairs and down a short hall. “What do you want me to do, Mom?” He asked as he entered the kitchen, with the sound of dishes being washed reaching his ears.

“Welllllll,” His mother, Cream Heart, began as she set a wet plate to the side of the sink to dry, before she turned off the water and turned to him. His mother stood the same height as him, which was 5 foot 10 inches, and she looked extremely sexy for her age. She had a tan coat, a gentle brown mane that was tied up with an orangish red hair tied towards the bottom, and baby blue eyes. Her tail was a gentle brown as well, and ended at her knees, with an orangish red hair tie at the end as well. She wore a dark red blouse that hugged her bountiful chest and had a butterfly pattern on it, dark blue pants that hugged her thick thighs and big butt, and a white apron with pink frills.

“I’d like for you to go get some groceries now,” She said, causing him to groan. “Button Mash!! Don’t you roll your eyes at me!!” She continued, frowning a bit upon seeing him do so. “I need you to get them because I’m cleaning the house today.”

Button groaned again at that. “Fiiiine,” He replied, before he turned and started to walk away, his hooves briefly clopping on the kitchen floor before he reached the carpeted hallway. ‘Bucking dammit mom!!’ He mentally complained. ‘I was just about to beat Speed Demon Sky Force and break the speedrunning record!!’ He continued as he headed to his room.

His room was somewhat small, and painted a nice gentle blue color. Various video game posters hung on the walls, with some of them signed. A clear light blue faux sword hung on the wall next to his door, while a plushie of a yellow mouselike creature sat on a shelf below it. A large TV sat in one corner, with a blue and black pause menu on it. Several consoles sat below the TV.

“I’m going to have to start all over again,” He groaned as he walked over to the TV and turned it off, before turning off the console he was using, which was black and shaped like an upside down “Y.” “Greaaaaaaaat,” He continued, before he put up the console and his controller. He then left his room, shutting his door behind him as he headed to the restroom to prep himself for a trip outside.

Said prepping consisted of him putting on a very light amount of deodorant, checking his teeth in the mirror, and emptying his bladder, washing his hands when he was done.

Once he’d dried his hands, he left the bathroom, and headed towards the front door. His mother was there waiting for him, a list in her hand and a small fabric pouch. “Make sure to get everything on the list if it’s available,” She said to him as she handed him the pouch and list. “And take your time,” She continued. “Spend some time out in the fresh air. Talk with your friends. Get a milkshake at Sugarcube Corner.”

“Yes mom,” Button replied, sounding slightly happier upon hearing he could get a milkshake. “I’ll try.”

Hearing that, Cream smiled. “Good,” She said, before he opened the door and walked out. “See you later sweetie!!” She called out as he walked out of the house. She watched him walk away and head towards the marketplace, before she sighed with a smile. “Oh, he’s grown up so much,” She said as she shut the door and turned around. She then gained a determined look on her face, and grabbed a nearby broom, before she headed to the living room. “Fresh air will do him some good,” She muttered as she started to sweep. “He was in his room for three hours.”

Button Mash sighed as he looked at the list in his hand as he walked through town. ‘Why now Mom?’ He thought as he looked at it for a few more seconds, before pocketing it. ‘Why now?’ He questioned. ‘You could clean the house any day, and you choose the day I’m attempting a speedrun.’ He then sighed again, before shaking his head. “And of all days too,” He muttered as he looked from the corners of his eyes.

Pink and red heart-shaped balloons were tied to the lamp posts. Paper hearts and pink ribbons hung on the edges of buildings.

And couples were walking around.

‘Of course she sends me to market on Hearts and Hooves Day,’ He thought with a saddened look. ‘Probably hoping i find “the one” she keeps going on about.’ He then huffed. ‘Like that’s ever going to happen.’

That thought made him start to mentally spiral as he looked at the various couples around him. There was Cranky and Matilda, who were sitting on a bench, looking at each other with smiles. There was Lyra and Bon-Bon, who were chatting about something, with Lyra moving her hands around animatedly. And there was Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon, who were walking by, with Diamond holding a bouquet of roses in her hand.

‘Everypony else is so lucky!!’ he thought as he walked by the couples, frowning as he went. ‘They all get to show off their special someponies!! And I'm by myself!!’ He continued, his frown growing larger. ‘It’s so unfair!!’

As he complained in his head, he felt himself bump into somepony.

“OOF!! Hey!! Watch where you’re going!!”

Button blinked and shook his head, before his eyes widened.

“Oh! So sorry!!” he said to the unicorn mare he’d walked right into. Said mare stood 6 foot 2 inches tall, and had pale green fur. She had a long mane that went down to her shoulders, and had a long bang over her right eye. Said mane was the same color as his, and her tail, which went down to her calves, was the same color as well. Her eyes were a bright green, like that of a fresh pear. A white button-up blouse hugged her D-cup chest, with a red ladybug on it surrounded by three green leaves, and a black skirt that went down to her knees hugged her wide hips. “Did I hurt you?” He asked the mare.

The mare looked at him with a frustrated look on her face. “No!! But you nearly made me drop my camera!!” She snapped, holding up an expensive black camera in her hand. “You’re lucky I didn’t drop it!” She growled as she looked him up and down a few times, before she turned and walked away.

“Sorry!!” He called out to the mare as she walked away, before sighing. “Great!! I made a pretty mare mad,” He groaned. “Good job Button. Good job,” He continued, rolling his eyes as he dragged a hand down his face before he headed onwards to the marketplace.

When he reached the marketplace, his attitude went further into the dumps as he saw all the stalls advertising flowers, chocolates, and other romantic items that were appropriate to be seen in public. ‘Dammit!!’ He thought as he looked at the bustling market, which was full of couples. ‘Alright. Just grab the groceries, get a milkshake, and get home,’ He continued as he looked at the list, before he bravely headed into the crowd, making his way towards a fruit stand. ‘You can do this.’

When he arrived at the fruit stand, he started looking through the fruit immediately. He was a stallion on a mission, and he would complete it as fast as possible. He was itching to get back to his game.

As he picked out some peaches and mangos, he heard a familiar female voice say, “Hey Button!!” “Scootaloo?” He questioned as he looked up from the fruit in his hands. “What are you doing here?”

The orange-furred, cerise-maned 18-year-old pegasus mare smiled at him as she stood behind the stand. “Oh, just manning the stand for Miss Fruit Basket today,” Scootaloo replied. “She ate some bad hay yesterday.”

“Oh,” He said. “I see,” he continued as he looked at her. “I’d like to buy these,” he said a bit awkwardly as he held up the fruit.

“That’ll be 20 bits,” She replied as she took the fruit and placed it in a large paper bag, while he counted out the proper change. They then traded the objects, with Scootaloo placing the bits in a box below the counter. “Thank you!!”

“You’re welcome,” Button said as he hooked the bag on his arm. “Later, Scootaloo,” He continued as he started to turn away from the stand.

“Wait!!” Scootaloo said, grabbing him by the arm. “I almost forgot!!” She continued, before gaining a wide smile. “Happy Hearts and Hooves Day!!”

Button huffed at that. “Yeah, Happy Hearts and Hooves Day,” he grumbled as he pulled his arm out of her grip and walked away. This caused Scootaloo to gain a confused and somewhat worried look on her face.

“What’s with him?” She questioned as she watched him walk away. Before she could think about it more though, a couple came to the stand, drawing her attention.

‘Happy Heart’s and Hooves Day indeed!!’ Button thought with a big frown. ‘Happy for everypony else but me!!’ He continued as he moved through the crowd, his countenance causing ponies to move out of the way.

Soon, he reached the flower stand. And instead of being manned by Rose, Daisy, and Lily. It was being manned by Sweetie Belle.

“Hi Button!!” She said with a smile to the frowning Earth Pony, before she arched an eyebrow at his expression. “What’s wrong?” She asked him.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Button replied flatly.

“Are you sure??” She asked, concern on her face and in her voice. “You can tell me.”

“I said, I don’t want to talk about it,” Button repeated, his voice rising a little. “And where’s the Flower Triplets?? Shouldn’t they be running their stand?” He questioned.

“They’re sick,” Sweetie Belle replied matter-of-factly, prompting him to arch an eyebrow. “Yeah, turns out they all had an allergic reaction to garlic. Since I was close by, they asked me to look after their stand until they recovered.”

“Really? Garlic??” he said with surprise.

“Yep!! Odd, right?” She replied as he started looking at the flower bouquets, before he grabbed a nice yellow and red flower combo that had a tag on it reading “10 bits.”

“Hey Sweetie Belle,” a female southern voice called out, getting the attention of her and Button Mash.

“Hey Bloom!!” Sweetie Belle said with a smile as her friend Apple Bloom walked over, a box of apples in her arms. The paleish yellow Earth Pony mare was wearing an orange t-shirt with a red apple on it and blue overalls, and her large red bow. “How are you today?”

“Great!! AJ’s hangin out with RD right now, so ah had ta bring the triplets their delivery instead of her,” Apple Bloom replied, before arching an eyebrow. “Where are they?”

“They’re at home. Allergic reaction to garlic,” Sweetie Belle answered, causing Apple Bloom to arch an eyebrow. “Yes, I’m serious.”

“Oh, well that’s too bad,” Apple Bloom replied. “Does this mean you’re not gonna be able to go on that date with Silver Spoon later?”

“No, I’ll still be able to go,” Sweetie answered with a shake of her head. “I just have to sell all these flowers,” She continued as she gestured to the remaining bouquets, before she remembered that Button Mash was still there. “Oh!! Sorry Button!!” She said with a gasp as she took the offered bits from his hand. “Didn’t mean to keep you waiting.”

Button sighed. “It’s fine,” He replied flatly as he lowered his hand and put the bouquet in the paper bag. He then started to turn around, but paused when another female voice spoke up.

“Hey, Apple Bloom!!”

“Oh, hey Diamond Tiara!!” Apple Bloom said as her marefriend walked over, passing by Button.

“I had my butler cut these roses for you,” Diamond Tiara said as she held out the bouquet to Apple Bloom. “They’re very fresh.”

“Awwww, thanks Tiara!!” AB replied as she took the roses and sniffed them, before taking a bite. “Mmmmm, delicious!!” She said as Diamond smiled at her, while Silver Spoon walked over to Sweetie and gave her a hug.

“Happy Hearts and Hooves Day Sweetie Belle/Apple Bloom!!” Silver and Diamond said to their marefriends happily, before they kissed them on the lips.

At that, Button huffed, before he walked away quickly, the girls oblivious to his reaction. ‘Ugh!! Do they have to make out now?’ He thought as he walked through the crowd, his demeanor becoming very unfriendly. Part of him knew that that thought was uncalled for, but his frustration with the holiday and his relationship status outweighed that part of him. ‘It’s so embarrassing!!’

As he walked, he looked at the list in his hand, and sighed with some relief. ‘Well, at least that was all Mom needed from the market,’ He thought with a bit of happiness. ‘Now I can get a milkshake and head home to play my game!!’

And with that thought, he hurried through the crowd and down to the gingerbread building that was Sugarcube Corner. ‘Oh, I hope that the Heart’s and Hooves crowd has already come through,’ He thought as he reached the door and grabbed the handle. ‘I don’t think I can handle being in the same room with all those lovey-dovey couples!!’ He continued with a roll of his eyes, before he pulled open the door, causing the bell to ring.

And upon stepping inside, he sighed. ‘Celestia bucking dammit!!!’ He cursed in his head.

Multiple couples sat at tables, with milkshakes and other sweet treats being devoured by them. Some were talking with each other, while others were just lovingly looking into each others eyes. ‘Of course I had to be that unlucky!!’ He thought as he stared at the room, before he shook his head. ‘Okay, just get a milkshake and get out. It’s super simple,’ He continued, before he walked towards the counter.

As he headed towards said counter, he saw a familiar bluish-gray pegasus stallion standing before it. “Rumble?” He said to the pegasus, who turned upon hearing his name be said.

“Button!! It’s great to see you!!” Rumble said to his friend, fistbumping him as he came to a stop. “What brings you out of your dark cave?”

“Grocery run,” Button replied as he held up the paper bag.

“Aw, and not a pretty mare?” Rumble asked, causing Button to frown. “That sucks dude. That really sucks. You shouldn’t be alone on this day.”

Button’s frown deepened at that.

“I mean, you’re a nice guy,” Rumble continued. “Maybe I can hook you up with one of my pegasi frien-”

“Rumble,” Button interrupted, his voice firm and flat. “Drop. It.”

Hearing the tone of his friend’s voice, Rumble nodded slowly. “Alright. Sorry. Guess it’s a sore topic,” He replied with an embarrassed look on his face.

Before Button could even think of a response to it, Mrs. Cake came from the back, two milkshakes in her hands. “Here you go Rumble dear. Two rainbow blasts to go,” She said to Rumble, prompting him to turn back to her with a smile.

“Thank you Mrs. Cake,” He replied as he took the milkshakes.

“Oh, you’re welcome dear,” She said with a smile. “I know Scootaloo will love this little surprise of yours.”

“I know she will,” Rumble replied, his smile growing on his face. He then turned to Button. “Well, later dude. Happy Hearts and Hooves Day!!” He continued as he started to walk off, forgetting how Button was feeling due to him focusing on his marefriend Scootaloo.

“Yeah, Happy Hearts and Hooves Day,” Button said half-heartedly as he watched his friend walk away, before he turned his attention back to Mrs. Cake, who was looking at him with some concern. “Hi Mrs. Cake. I’d like to get a large Black Licorice and Mint Milkshake to go please,” he continued.

“Are you okay dear?” She asked him. “It’s Hearts and Hooves Day. You should have a smile on your face.”

At that, He frowned even more. “I don’t want to talk about it,” He said firmly. ‘Why should I be happy when I’m all alone, and no mare wants to be my marefriend,’ he thought to himself.

Mrs. Cake opened her mouth to ask if he was sure, but paused upon seeing his eyes. And her eyes widened with realization. “Alright dear,” She replied, before she rang up his order. “That’ll be 5 bits.”

Button quickly reached into the money pouch and grabbed the change, before handing it to her. “It’ll be ready in a couple minutes,” Mrs. Cake said to him, before she headed to the back to make his milkshake, leaving him standing there.

‘Please hurry!!’ He thought as he stood there, feeling very uncomfortable due to all the couples in the room. He tried to take his mind off of the holiday and relationships by thinking about his video game, but that was practically impossible, as there were pink hearts and other romantic decorations scattered about the room that screamed “It’s Hearts and Hooves Day!!”

Then, the front bell rang, signaling that a potential customer had walked in. ‘Oh, please don’t be a couple!!’ Button thought as he started to turn to see who had walked in.

And when he saw who had come in, his eyes widened greatly.

There, standing just inside the room, with their arms wrapped around each other, was Twist and Snails.

‘What. The. Buck!?!’ Button thought as he stared at the two ponies. ‘What the buck?!! Snails got a marefriend!!!’ Snails then kissed Twist on the cheek, causing her to giggle. And that made his blood start to boil a bit more. ‘He got a marefriend!! And I don't have one?!!!’ He growled, gritting his teeth. ‘Is Discord playing a prank on me?!! Is it the universe?!! Why does he have a marefriend and I don’t?!!!’

“Here you go dear!! One licorice and mint milkshake,” Mrs. Cake said as she walked back to the front and held the shake out to him. He then snatched the milkshake and quickly stomped away, with Snails and Twist looking at him with confusion as he passed by them. Other couples looked at the door as he kicked it open and walked out, confusion on their faces as well.

“Um, what’s eating him?” Snails asked as he stared at the door.

“Nothing you need to worry about Snails,” Mrs. Cake replied as she stared at the door, a sad look on her face. “Nothing at all.” She then shook her head, and gained a smile on her face. “So, what can I get you two?” She asked them.

Button Mash stomped through the town, a massive frown on his face as he drank on his shake. ‘Bucking Snails gets a marefriend and I don’t have one!!’ He grumbled. ‘And with my luck, he’s probably lost his virginity too,’ He continued, frowning even more. ‘Dammit!!!!!!’

His demeanor put the other ponies on edge, as Button was typically a very pleasant stallion to be around. Him being this upset was rather out of character. At least, it was now. When he was a little foal it was more common. The ponies watched as he walked by, with several couples stopping their conversations and turning to look at him, some having concern on their faces.

As he rounded a corner, he brushed past the unicorn mare from earlier, who whirled around to see who had touched her. When she saw it was Button, and that he looked very distressed, she closed her mouth, as she’d been about to yell at him. She watched as he walked away, having not realized he’d bumped into somepony, and stared at him deeply. ‘Hmmmm, perhaps I should visit him soon,’ She thought to herself as her eyes briefly changed to a darker green color, before she turned and walked away.

After several minutes of walking, he reached his house. When he entered it, he saw his mother was sitting on the couch, a book in hand and reading glasses on her muzzle. He then slammed the door, making her jump a bit, before he headed to the kitchen.

“Oh!! Already back Button?” She asked him, causing him to grunt as he set the paper bag on the counter. “Button, use your words,” She continued as she got up and headed to the kitchen.

“I don’t want to talk about it mom, I just want to go to my room,” he said as he tried to go upstairs, but was immediately stopped by his mother Cream Heart who blocked his way.

“Button, you slammed the door, and are clearly angry about something,” she said with a stern motherly tone. “I also don’t appreciate the attitude you’re having with me right now. Now tell me what’s wrong.”

At that, he sighed. “Sorry mom,” he replied. “It’s just, it’s Hearts and Hooves Day, and everypony i know has a marefriend or a coltfriend,” He continued, his voice getting sadder in tone. “Including Snails,” He said with some frustration.

“Snails got with somepony?” Cream said with some surprise. “Who?”

“Twist,” he replied simply.

“Oh!! I should have known!!” She said with a large smile. “Those two were always hanging out a lot when you were younger,” She continued, before she looked at her son again and saw that he was looking at her with a frown. “What’s wrong about that?” She questioned. “DId you not want him to get a marefriend?”

“No!! Mom, that’s not it at all!!” he snapped. “It’s just that I don’t get why the class clown’s got a marefriend and i don’t!!” He said angrily. “I’ve asked mares out. I’ve been on singular dates. And nothing has come out of any of them,” He continued, his voice getting emotional. “I just…I just want somepony to love. And this day just keeps reminding me I don’t.”

“Oh, sweetie,” Cream replied as she walked over and hugged him, while he started to sniffle. “I know it’s hard not having a special somepony, especially on a day like this. But you’ll find them at some point.”

“I don’t want to find them at some point. I want to find them now!!” He said as he looked at his mother with a frown.

“I know you do,” Cream said with a sigh. “But you can’t rush love. It takes time.” She then gave him a big hug. “Just be patient, and you’ll find your special somepony,” She continued, before kissing him on the cheek and letting go of him. “Alright?”

“Alright,” He replied somewhat half-heartedly as he rubbed the tears out of his eyes. “I’ll try,” He continued, before he turned and walked out of the room. “I’ll be in my room if you need me.”

“Okay sweetie,” She said, before she turned her attention to the grocery bag and sighed. ‘I do hope that he finds a marefriend soon,’ She thought to herself. ‘A healthy stallion like him needs one to help with his “urges.” And I know he has them,’ She continued with a small blush and smile.

Button sighed as he entered his room and shut the door. ‘Well that was a fun grocery trip,’ He thought with a roll of his eyes, before he headed over to the tv and started setting up the game Speed Demon Sky Force. ‘Hopefully attempting this speedrun will help cheer me up,’ He continued.

Several minutes passed, before he was set up for another attempt to speedrun the game. He then turned on his camera, and smiled, his headset on underneath his beanie. “Hello everypony!! This is The Demon Button again!! I’m about to attempt to break the speedrun world record for Speed Demon Sky Force again today,” He said as he looked at the TV screen.

“Sparkle7 says, ‘Hello The Demon Button!!’” His computer said via a text to a voice reader. His viewers chat screen was pulled up on it next to him, along with a timer. ”I wish you luck on this speedrunner attempt.”

“Oh, thank you, Sparkle7,” Button said, smiling at the encouraging words as he started the game and the timer. “That is very kind of you,” He continued.

”Inkblot says, “Why speedrun this game? It’s not very fun.”

“Are you kidding me?! This game is a lot of fun!!” Button said as he skipped through the tutorial and selected his pilot, a male dragon named “Darkwing.” “The graphics might not be as good as more modern games, but the flight mechanics are fantastic!!”

“Lunar Gale says, “Silence Inkblot!! Thou dost not understand the beauty of this game!! It is a classic!! He speaks the truth of the flight mechanics!! No other game has had mechanics like this one.”

“Thank you Lunar Gale,” Button said with a smile as he quickly beat the first level and reached the first boss. “I must say, I never get tired of hearing your old Ponish. It’s very relaxing.”

”Lunar Gale says, “Thank you for your kind words.”

“You’re welcome,” He said, before he focused even more on the screen as he beat the first boss, quickly getting into the zone. He went through the game, upgrading his plane after each boss and speeding through the levels as fast as he could, trying to take as little time as possible. And then, he reached it. The final boss. It was a massive battle plane that had large laser cannons, thick shields, and three health bars, as well as minions in the form of smaller planes that launched their pony pilots at him like spears.

He punched buttons and swirled joysticks. He grit his teeth and flexed his arms. And then, with one more button punch, his plane launched a massive beam of fire at the boss, destroyed the final health bar, and made the boss explode into pieces.

“Yes!!” He cheered happily as the credits started to roll, with him speeding by them before he reached over and slammed a button on the computer, stopping the timer. “I’m done!!” He continued, before he looked at the results. “Did I beat the record?” He asked, suddenly feeling nervous as he pulled up the record of the game and compared it to his time.

He looked at it carefully, before his eyes widened and he shrieked. “Yesyesyesyesyes!!!!” He shouted happily as he raised his somewhat sore arms in the air and shook them. “I beat it!! I beat it!!!”

”Sparkle7 says, “Congratulations for beating the record by six minutes. That is a big accomplishment.”

”SlitheringScales says, “Congratulations!!”

“I beat it!!” He shouted happily as he shook his arms some more. “Woohooo!!”

”Lunar Gale says, “We are pleased with thine accomplishment. Thou art an excellent gamer!! We look forward to seeing thou play another game. Perhaps with us.”

“I’d love that!!” Button said with a smile upon hearing that his most faithful viewer wanted to game with him. “Let me know when you’d like to play.”

”Lunar Gale says, “Huzzah!!! We are most pleased with your response!! We will begin planning at once!!”

More congratulations popped up in chat, with the text reader saying each one, while Button saved his speedrunning recording and set it in a special file, along with all relevant information. He then heard his stomach growl loudly, and he sighed. “Well everypony,” He began as he looked at his computer screen. “I’ve gotta end the stream for today!! The Demon Button is now signing off!!” He continued with a smile and a salute, before he ended the stream.

“Man, I can’t believe i beat the record!!” He said giddily. “And Lunar Gale wants to game with me!! Oh, this day has gotten so much better!!” He continued as he started cleaning up his setup.

Once he’d finished cleaning it up, he went to the restroom, right as his mother called out “Button!! Dinner!!”

“Coming mom!!” He called back as he finished pissing and washed his hands, before he left the bathroom. He then made his way to the dining room, where he saw that his Mom had made a delicious dinner that consisted of green beans, mashed potatoes, and grilled cheese sandwiches. “Mmm. Looks good mom!!” He said as he sat down at the table, with her already sitting down.

“Aw, thank you sweetie,” She replied happily. “So, I take it you beat the record?” She asked with a smile, having heard his cheering.

“Mhm!! By six minutes!!” He said proudly as he ate. “Annnd Lunar Gale is planning a gaming session with them.”
