All That Flickers is Not Hope

Sapphire Spark was desperate to restore Equestria to its past glory, always searching for a way to end the terrible and arduous civil war that had plagued the land: a three-way fight between the Solar Empire, the Lunar Empire and the Harmonic resistance.

But she had to act now or never, as both Empresses had agreed to a ceasefire to deal with Sapphire’s Harmonist revolts.

“Hmm… but who to go for first?” She thought some more. Nightmare Moon tended to be more strategic than her fiery counterpart — that’s not to say the latter wasn’t capable of planning, but Nightmare Moon was certainly the better tactician of the two, especially with her background. She had been traveling for days, but now her destination was within sight. Sapphire was now within reach of the sun-bathed castle. Daybreaker recovered from her surprise and quickly put up a fiery shield.

“You’ll never get the chance to torture me! I have contingencies!” Sapphire retorted, forgetting that revealing backup plans was never a good idea. It wasn’t a lie though. As part of her battle preparations, Starswirl had helped her carve a rune into her sword that would teleport her out of danger should she get overwhelmed.

Seeing Daybreaker’s confidence fanned the flames within her, and without missing a beat, Sapphire rushed forward to take three other swings at her opponent. She focused her magic and concentration on slowing the sword down, stopping it dead in its tracks just inches away from her face. Taking it in her magical grasp once more, Sapphire held up her blade steadfast and resolute.
