The psychotic gentlegriff
C87 No place for potential
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe events last night were relatively surprising, Silverfeather and her mother ended up walking in on their mates already sleeping on the floor, the scent of alcohol thick with in the air.
After waking up the drunken griffs, both hens giggled at the incoherent sounds coming from the boys.
“Heheheh, what? He’s so silly when he’s like this.”
“Yes, they get like that after one too many…. I might not be a fan of this behaviour but it’s good to see them getting along, I don’t remember the last time your dad went out with his buddies.”
“I’m just happy they’re not at each other’s throats or something.”
“Mommy! Daddy smells!”
“Heheheh yes, he’s been drinking dear but let’s get him to bed and go have dinner.”
“But he’ll stink the bed out!”
“Smart cub, put him on the couch in your room. That’s what I’d do with your father.”
“You’d put him on my couch?”
“No of course not, my couch not yours…. Hahahah!”
“Hahahahah!”
“Mmmmm shut up…. Please.”
“Oh sorry Anubis, didn’t mean to wake you.”
“Mmm I love your butt to.”
“Sigh* thanks.”
“Oh my, well at least he’s honest dear. I’m impressed you can carry him, you’ve gotten a lot stronger.”
“Really? I mean he’s not terribly heavy.”
“Mommy, i agree with daddy. You have a pretty bum.”
“Thanks Eclipse…. There’s more to me than my bum. You hear that Anubis?”
“Mhmm-no sorry, he’s not available right now.”
“For fuck sakes….”
“Gasp* Silver?! Not in front of the cubs.”
“My little brother can’t even speak mum!?”
“And what about your daughter?”
“She’s.”
“Fuck!”
“Nooo!!!! Eclipse Grimgost! You do not use that word young lady, I’m very disappointed in you.”
“B-b-sniffle-but you use them?”
“I’m an adult so I’m allowed to, you are most certainly not allowed.”
“I-sniffle sorry mom, I just-snort just thought.”
“Thought what?” Blackfeather was quite proud of how her daughter was handling this, a vast improvement from what Silver showed not two hours ago.
“I'm sorry mommy….”
“Good, now wipe away those tears and let’s grab something to eat, what should we have?”
“I’ve got that covered dear, just put Anubis to bed and meet me in the dining hall.”
“Okay mum, come on Eclipse.”
“Sniffle okay….”
“Mmmm yeah listen to your mother, you little shit.”
Thwack*
“Ouch….”
“You should know better, from now on no more swearing in front of our cub.”
“Sorry.”
“Huff* you can walk yourself to bed now.”
“Wha?”
Thud*
The displeased hen dropped Anubis onto the cold floor with a swift jerk, the larger griff fell beak first.
“Nah I think I’ll hover.”
Silver reached out and grabbed his tail, she then dug her claws into the Muscular appendage and received a yelp from her Fiancé.
He spun around and pounced at her, slamming her into the wall with considerable force.
“AAAAnubis!?!?”
“Do. Not. do that please…. sigh* Silver.”
The now frozen hen stared at him in fear, she never thought she’d be so close to angering him but digging her talons into his tail clearly was a no go.
“I-gulp I’m sorry…. Nubie.”
“Don’t apologise my love…. I’m a bloody idiot…. I’m gonna head to bed…. Queen Blackfeather is there a guest room I can take please?”
“Um sure, I’ll take you there once I get my husband in bed….”
Eclipse was completely shaken up by that sudden outburst but now that she was calming down, she could only think about how thick the awkward blanket of air was now.
It was like she could grasp it….
“Squawk!!”
She did! She could! And she was now fixated on this whilst her dad began to inspect his entire body.
“Anubis, you don’t need to do that. It was my own fault, I clearly caught you off guard and-and fu~ please. It isn’t your fault.”
“Sigh* just relax, i’m fine Silver, but that doesn’t mean it’s alright. I believe I need to just…. Get some rest~ I’ll join you tomorrow morning at breakfast.”
“Y-you sure?”
“Yes…. Now I’ll be taking my leave then, good night my love.”
Silverfeather’s mother looked to her daughter in confusion but she only got a shaken glimpse from her daughter as Anubis walked off.
The next morning Silverfeather awoke to the smell of fresh minty air, she wondered where the pleasant smell was coming from.
She got her answer in the form of locking beaks with Anubis no less, the pleasantly surprised hen pushed into the kiss and wrapped her talons around his neck.
“Hey!! I’m awake you know! Silly daddy.”
The attacker pulled away to Silver’s dismay.
“Oh sorry, I thought you were still sleeping Eclipse.”
“Well I wasn’t sleeping and where’s my kiss!!”
“You smell.”
“So does mommy’s breath!”
“Touché.”
Anubis kissed the tiny cub on the forehead as she squeaked in satisfaction.
“There, now let’s get you bathed you rotten chicken.”
“Hey I’m not a ticken!!!”
“Sure, you’re a chicken.”
“Mommy help!!”
“Heheheh nope dear, mamma needs her Beauty sleep.”
“Traitor!!!”
“Mmmmm~ sorry.”
One bath later and a hearty breakfast Anubis was now in disguise wondering Griffonstone.
But he was not in the capital’s wealthiest district, he was more curious about the slums on the lower levels of the city.
He walked through the filthy streets, his paws trampled over cracked cobbles as he looked at the abysmal conditions the lower class griffons were in.
But what annoyed him was the lack of effort to adapt or improve the conditions, there was no attempt to innovate or create out of necessity.
It was as if they just didn’t know how or even grasp the concept of progress, they were in a state of stagnation and that was a problem.
“Argh that little brat! He said this would help crack these blasted walnuts! I don’t see how?”
“Give it here you old fart, like this dad.”
“Ahhahah the brat was right, it does…. Now do this one.”
“I just showed you how! Do it yourself.”
“Huff* fine you ungrateful hen…. I gave you life you know!”
“Yeah yeah I know, now here’s your news paper so shut up.”
“Thanks….”
“Excuse me but where did you get that from?”
“Who’s asking?”
“Some-griffon that’s interested in the maker of that gadget.”
“Well he’s just down the street and then you take a left through an alleyway and you should fine the young lad. He’s a little on the thin side with only three legs, you can’t miss him.”
“Cheers buddy, here.”
Anubis tossed a few gold Griffish coins to the oddly informative griff that moments ago was yelling at his teenage daughter.
As he followed the direction of the old griff, Anubis began to bear witness to a more unpleasant side of the slums.
He was approached by what looked to be a relatively young hen offering him services which he quickly declined.
“Huff* you’re loss stud, I may be inexperienced but it’d be the best time of your life.”
“Here.” He threw some gold coins at her and she caught them with a look of surprise and fear.
“I um f-follow me and.”
“Now get yourself off the streets idiot, don’t throw your life away.”
“Wha? Um wait, am I not good enough for you huh? Not experienced enough?”
“Oh shut up, I’m married.”
“Oh…. Well I bet I’d be far more fun than your wife.”
Then a hen in guard armour landed in front of Anubis, to the griff’s surprise. It was Glacier who looked nervous.
“What are you doing here sir?”
“I’m surprised you recognise me.”
“It’s your scent sir and please follow me, it isn’t safe here…. Flora? Is that you?”
“G-Glacier? I-it’s not what it looks like.”
“What?”
“She was just offering herself and her services to me.”
“She was what?! Flora, you promised you’d never do this for money!”
“I’m sorry but I need to eat! I need to get money somehow, I’m sorry.”
“Fuck…. Please tell me you haven’t.”
“Haven’t what?”
“No she hasn’t, don’t worry Glacier.”
“Oh thank goodness…. Wait how do you know?”
“The way she approached me said it all, she was too nervous.”
“So you haven’t had sex yet?”
“What!? Keep it down, that’s private information.”
“Shut up…. Sorry sir, I’m just upset with my sister here….”
“Your sister?”
“I’m not her real sister but her mum took me in…. Sort of and we both promised your mum that we’d never resort to prostitution.”
“I know I’m sorry but what else do I do?”
“Glacier, take her with you to the house and guard over my daughter.”
“House?”
“Yes, house and tell my wife I’m fine and just exploring.”
“Um….”
“That’s an order.”
“Y-yes sir…. talk about an abuse of power.”
“And? Remember what I’ve given you.”
She straightened up and grasped her stomach. “I haven’t forgotten…. but how will i know it works?”
“When you go into heat or estrus season comes around.”
“sir, not so loud please.”
“Sorry, now go and take your sister with you.”
They separated and Anubis went back to what he was doing just a moment ago.
As Anubis went on his way, he saw a large number of diseased griffons that were too sick to even eat, but that wasn’t the worst of it.
The only healthy griffons were the ones who Looked as if they were eyeing up anything that got too close. He assumed that they were part of a gang.
As he found the alleyway he was told to go to, just a little further down the road was a wagon filled with bodies. Anubis waited for it to pass and looked at it as it passed.
He saw everything from a completely rotten corpse to the freshly deceased from all ranges of age. Some died from vicious wounds others died from disease or starvation.
Then he saw a carcass of a cub and her mother and father following the wagon, crying as the wagon took the body of their child away.
This was truly cruel but Anubis was looking for somecreature, so he went down the alley and paid it little attention.
He came across what looked like a makeshift shed that was poorly constructed, inside was a dirty griff that was on the smaller side and sickly thin.
He was missing a foreleg and the stump was festering, the smell was shockingly worse than the cart of bodies…. And yet somehow he had this look of determination and the all too familiar glint of an inventor in his eyes.
“Why hello, you diamond in the rough.”
“And what’s that supposed to mean? Well old dude.” The malnourished griff attached a wooden prosthetic leg that had some minor joints mobility.
It looked as if it was made from whatever pieces of wood the griffon could get ahold of, it was attached to the festering stump via ropes that wrapped around his shoulder and chest.
As Anubis followed the rope he noticed that the near skeleton griffon was also missing both his wings.
“Well? You gonna tell me what you want or just stare?”
“Relax please, I’m just impressed with your prosthetic leg.”
“Well that’s not for sale, I need it.”
“I’m not looking to buy it but…. I might have an opportunity for you if you’re up for the challenge?”
“Challenge? Huff* and what if I’m not interested?”
“Then that would be a waste of your gift. Listen, I am willing to help you only if you help me.”
“And how can you help me?”
“With a home, a workshop and even food and water. Something you clearly don’t have.”
“We have plenty of food! I just…. I’m not hungry!”
As if on queue, his stomach let out a sickly growl.
“You want something to eat?”
“R-really?”
“Yeah but first what did you mean by we?”
“That’s none of your business!!” He looked as if he was trying to hold back tears but the dam broke as he choked out a pained sob. “H-sob* he’s just sob* sleeping! That’s all sob* sniffle* he’ll get up.”
“And who is he?”
“My dad! He’ll get up just you watch…. Their wrong sob* he’s not de-sob* gone…. He’s not…. I refuse….”
Anubis let the young griff release all his tears, in the meantime he pondered how he was going to tackle the problem before him.
In his mind, it’s a lot easier to comfort a hen or mare and even easier when said hen or mare only needs affection to feel better. He could give that out like there was no tomorrow but this was new.
This was a male griffon, a young male griffon that was broken in more ways than one. An intriguing puzzle of the mind and psyche.
He had to be delicate but not too mushy or he’d only make things worse, he decided to leave the mushy stuff to Silver.
He tried to think back to when his own mother and father died but when he did, Anubis realised that he wasn’t given any chance to grieve, he was more concerned with survival.
“Hey kid…. My wife is making lunch around about now, do you want to join us?
The griff said nothing, he only nodded but as soon as he leaned forward to walk. The starving youth collapsed and landed in some mud just outside his shelter.
“Well that makes things easier….”
Anubis took a look in the shed and found what looked to be a pile of dirty blankets but turned out to be the griff’s father.
“Just as I assumed, he’s dead…. Fuck it, I’ll take the body as well…. And all of these drawings, they look interesting….” Anubis lifted the body and young griffon onto his back.
Opening a portal beneath him, he straightened up and allowed gravity to do the rest.
He appeared in the castle guest room he slept in the previous night and laid the dead griff down on the soft bed, Anubis carried the starving youth to the kitchen to prepare him some liquid food.
He did ponder if he should use his biomancy but chose not to, instead Anubis was going to see if this griff still had some fight in him.
Anubis found the nearest guard and asked him where the castle infirmary was.
To the griff’s disbelief, the guard calmly stated that the castle didn’t have one. So he just dipped around a corner and jump through a portal.
“Bloody hell, what sort of castle doesn’t have an infirmary? Foolish design.”
Now in one of his medical supply houses in Canterlot, he grabbed all the equipment he required and went straight back to the guest room in Griffonstone castle.
“And move you because you’re already dead, now to get you on a drip kid…. And clean out that stump you got.”
A few hours and a tray of bloody surgical instruments later, Anubis sat down and admired his work.
A lot of tissue was removed from the stump, a lot more than Anubis liked but he was only concerned about the bone and the local nerves.
Then the guest room door opened and it was only then the griff realised how bad this scene looked to anyone else.
“Aaahhhhh!!!!”
Thud*
“How wonderful….”
The sarcasm was practically dripping from his beak, a maid had walked in and saw what looked like a vicious murder scene.
Anubis could hear the unwelcome sound of talons on stone and metal clanking get closer and closer with each fleeting second.
“God dam it….”
‘You called?’
“Not now Zodiac, I’ve got some explaining to do so would you kindly fuck off.”
‘Sure but I’m gonna enjoy the show, good luck.’
“….sigh* thanks.”
“You there….”
The first guard to appear in the doorway stopped in his tracks, the second slammed into his fellow guard and dropped his sword.
“We need reinforcements!!!!”
The cry alerted everycreature in the nearby area and everyone from guards to even the maids and butlers came running. Anubis was now frustrated with the situation and decided to make himself comfortable.
The first two guards took the unconscious maid and retreated behind the newly formed wall of shields and swords.
Then a voice rang out that the griff recognised, it was king Silverbeak.
“Move aside now, I need to see what is the meaning of all this nonsense…. Anubis?”
“King Silverbeak.”
“My tail feathers…. W-what happened? You didn’t do this did you.”
“I know it looks bad but I can assure you i have saved a life here.”
“What do you mean boy?”
“I’m a doctor…. In training overseas but still a doctor.”
“Oh okay but you said a life, that implies that.”
“Yep…. The one on the floor is the cub’s dad or was. He was already dead when I found him but that one. He’s not in great shape but alive, more importantly. How is it that this castle doesn’t have an infirmary?”
The griffon king looked to the weakly breathing griffon on Anubis’s bed who was hooked up to all sorts of wires and tubes, then back to Anubis.
“Well that’s a relief but it’s not something we’ve considered before, why should we?”
“Is that a serious question? Of course you should, what happens if a griffon gets severely injured?”
“We’d fly them to the hospital.” The king stated calmly.
“Right and do they get there alive or dead?”
“Um…. I guess you might have a point…. so what would you have me do?”
“We’ll talk later about it but as for right now, can you please tell your guards to stand down.”
The older griff walked in and kicked the door closed behind.
“So I take it you went out for a wonder, it’s a shame we can’t help them out more….” He hung his head low as he walked through the blood staines on the floor.
“Why can’t you?”
“The gangs that run the slums, every time I’ve tried to send in guards we end up getting off worse.”
“Glacier showed up in guard armour?”
“Private Glacier? Did she get back alright?”
“Haven’t checked, how about we do that.”
“Yes, whilst you do that I’ll have my guards go back to their stations and have some-griffon remove the father’s body.”
“I’ll handle that and the blood, just grab Silver and your wife.”
Roughly 20 minutes later Anubis was in the guest room with the griffon royals and Glacier, Glacier’s sister as well as his own mate and daughter.
The only sound that was being made was the constant but weak beeps coming from the heart monitor rigged up to the teen griff.
“pssss Glacier, who’s the big one?”
“That is the griff we saw earlier today, when I found you.”
“Wha? No, surly you’re playing with me here. That griff was way smaller and stupid, he called this place a house.”
“Yes because I’d rather not draw the wrong kind of attention to myself but nonetheless, I’m glad you got back fine Glacier.”
“Thanks sir.”
“Daddy?”
“Yes.”
“Who is that griffon next to Glacier? She’s nice.”
“That’s Glacier’s sister…. Adopted sister.”
“Hey! I wasn’t the one who was adopted and the name is Flora.”
“Anyway. Eclipse.” Anubis was cut off by the cub.
“Can she stay? She’s cool.”
“I don’t see why not, Silver?”
“Mmmmmm no.”
“But mommy why not?”
“I’d rather not have more hens eying up my Nubie.”
“Well your mother has spoken and it looks like it’s a no kiddo.”
“Um do I get a say in all this? It is me your on about here.”
“Nope sorry…. But what do you plan on doing with the griff on the bed Nubie?”
“No idea but he has potential as an apprentice my dear and without any family members to take him in, he’s gonna need a home. I’d also love to see how he’s going to progress.”
“What are you planning?”
“Well I’m planning on bringing a new age of technology. The age of Magic-tech.”
“Okay that’s great Anubis, but what about races that can’t use magic…. Actively use magic.”
“Necessity is the mother of all invention Queen Blackfeather, and survival is the greatest necessity of all.”
Flora said what everyone was thinking. “So…. What does that mean dude?”
“I think I understand daddy, if we need it, we will make it.”
“That’s my girl, ten points.”
“Yay!”
“But that is why I need a pupil to teach.”
“And that’s why you went looking in the slums, because they have to be creative or…. Perish.”
“Ten points to the king.”
“Get in there.” Silverbeak pumped his talon into the air.
“Dad! Nubie! This isn’t a game, and whilst we’re at it, why do you only ever make weapons and things for death?”
“Um…. Because it’s all I know?”
“No it’s not. You make medication for Equestria you prick.”
“Ouch oh how your words hurt me my love, but yes I may make medicine, I can assure you that the methods and testing to make such drugs isn’t pretty.”
“Look…. I love you but we need to talk with Celestia about your near uncontrollable murderous nature. It’s not normal.”
“Thanks for your concern but nope, I do not have an issue with it and it’s quite controllable Silverfeather.”
“Please?”
“Sigh* I…. I really don’t want to….”
“Well you need to.”
“I know but it won’t make any difference.”
“Grrrrrrrrr* then just do it! I’m sure she’d be able to help you!”
“Are you fucking mad!? She’d lock me up!”
“No she won’t, she’d try and fix you!”
“Oh really? Fix me huh? So I’m broken am I? Because last time I checked my weapons have only served to protect Equestrians from the Dream Spirits! I’m the one who fixes things!”
“So? Doesn’t change the fact that you murder any noble that Celestia merely mentions has been annoying her! You talk about progress and yet you never change!!”
“You want me to change?” For the first time since they had met, Anubis looked genuinely hurt as tears of blood began to fall down his face.
“Oh no…. I’m sorry.” Silver looked to her parents.
“Hahahahah~ has this always been your plan? To try and fix me? Change me to better suit your needs? Well I’m impressed but I need to do some thinking on how I…. Feel about this brake through.”
“No! Anubis I’m sorry!! No no no….” Tears of regret formed as her mate disappeared through a portal.
Silver’s dad wrapped a wing around her.
“You have some explaining to do…. So he’s a serial killer.”
“Sniffle* yeah…. But.”
“Silverfeather! I know he’s a killer…. But you need to know he’s also a protector, if he’s willing to kill for princess Celestia, then he’ll kill for you.”
“Wha? No but dad, he’s…. I don’t understand how he can go from an extreme act of violence to loving me? It doesn’t make sense.”
“Because his love for you is true…. I know you don’t want that but Anubis has killed for you and he will do it again. He said it himself, he can’t afford to lose you or Celestia.”
“But…. why did I say that to him? He doesn’t need to change…. I need to just except him as he is….”
Silver’s mum chimed in with some advice. “Give him some space to think? I mean yesterday he was on edge, so something has him riled up baby but I don’t know how i feel about this.”
“Should we be listening to this?”
“No but shut up.”
“But what could he be afraid of?”
Glacier pitched in. “Um Silverfeather? It might be the other long-eared griffon?”
“Argh, how could I forget about that…. What if it’s one of the griffons that experimented on him when he was younger? Oh I’m such an idiot, w-what if he can’t stop killing? What if he experiments on others because he’s scared of being experimented on….”
“That… might actually be true? It makes sense. I mean you can’t be the test subject if you’re the one testing.”
Blackfeather scratched her beak. “You might be onto something, it would give him a sense of control…. But what about his thirst for knowledge?”
“Because he’s a smart ass….”
“Silver, that’s not a reason but let’s forget about this for now. You need to cheer up, he doesn’t hate you and I’m sure you’ll make up with him quickly. So beak up dear, stop sulking like a cub.”
“I’m not a cub dad…. Thanks by the way, all of you.”
Then a rustling came from the bed, everycreature’s attention turned to the bed and they watched as the patient rolled over.
“So what about him? Wasn’t the point of this whole conversation about him originally?”
“Well you heard my husband to be, he’s staying…. And I guess you can to… Flora was it?”
“Um yes, thank you….”
Then Eclipse chimed in.
“Mommy, daddy might be evil but his heart is in the right place. Yes he might make horrifying monsters and zombies but he’s still daddy. Isn’t that the only thing that matters?”
“Y-yes…. But I’m not going to keep this from Celestia any longer, she deserves to know…. I just hope this one time Anubis is wrong and she doesn’t just lock him up….”
