Prehistoric Equestria
A Meeting with the Princess
Previous ChapterPrincess Celestia and Princess Luna stood before a massive pit on the outskirts of Canterlot. When the citizens of Canterlot first reported it, the two sisters originally thought it was just a sinkhole.
An earthquake had happened around the area recently. However, when the princesses visited the site of the hole, they quickly realized it was much deeper than they had previously thought. It appeared that the earthquake had opened up an undiscovered cave system. The princesses sent a group of their guards to see how long the cave was and were currently waiting for them to report back.
Suddenly, Celestia and Luna heard screaming and galloping coming from the tunnel. To their horror, they saw several of their guards running out of the tunnel, some covered in severe wounds. One guard was dragging a pony whose back legs were completely gone; all that was left were bloody stumps. Another guard was struggling to walk as his right front leg appeared to be bitten off. The princesses quickly ran up to the troop. Luna went over to help the other guards carry the injured to a safer area, while Celestia rushed over to one of the captains of the troop.
"Captain Moonlight, what happened down there?! What happened to the rest of the troop?" Celestia asked.
"We were ambushed, your highness! Some large reptile attacked us in the tunnel." Moonlight explained. "Most of the troop got slaughtered down there!"
"Where's Captain White Lance?" Celestia asked, referring to the troop's other captain.
"White Lance stayed behind to distract the animal while we got away."
Suddenly, the sound of magic bolts were heard coming from the tunnel, followed by yelling and roaring.
Then, silence.
Everypony turned to the cave, hoping White Lance had made it out. One of the guards slowly approached the tunnel, staring into the darkness.
"Captain White Lance?"
As the guard continued scanning through the darkness, his pupils suddenly shrank. He quickly turned around and galloped away as a massive Giganotosaurus stepped out of the tunnel.
In its blood-filled mouth was the lifeless body of Captain White Lance, the dead captain half-dangling out of the dinosaur's mouth. The Giganotosaurus then tossed Captain White Lance into its mouth, swallowing him whole. The dinosaur noticed all the ponies staring at it and growled at them.
One of the guards calmly whispered, "Nopony. Move. A. Muscle."
Despite what the guard said, the Giganotosaurus roared and ran towards the ponies. Everypony began to run except for Celestia and Luna, who stood their ground.
"Why'd you think that would work?!" One of the guards yelled.
"I saw it in a movie once!"
The Giganotosaurus continued to roar as he began to approach the guard ponies. It was suddenly hit by a bright, blue beam of magic causing the theropod roared in pain. It turned to look at its assailant: Princess Luna.
"Go back to Tartarus, foul creature." Luna yelled as she began to charge her horn for another attack. The Giganotosaurus roared at her in response and began to charge at the alicorn but was shot in the back by another beam, this one being yellow. The Giganotosaurus turned around and saw a glaring Princess Celestia, her horn glowing with yellow energy as she charged up another attack.
While her horn was charging up, Celestia flew right into the carnivore's face and hit it with her hooves. Luna flew in and copied her sister's action. The two sisters worked together to slowly drive the Giganotosaurus away from Canterlot and back into the tunnel. The Giga snapped at them, but the two sisters were able to dodge the dinosaur's attacks by flying higher than the Giga's jaws could reach.
Just as the Giga was near the entrance of the cave, Luna and Celestia raised their heads up, charging up their horns, before looking back down. From their horns, they fired a massive, burning beam of magic at the Giga. The combined power of the royal sisters was so intense that it knocked the Giganotosaurus over. The Giga roared in pain and quickly retreated back into the tunnel. The two sisters landed, panting from the amount of energy they exerted.
"Are you alright, sister?" Luna asked, turning to Celestia.
"Yes, sister." Celestia replied. She then carefully approached the hole and peered into its seemingly endless abyss.
"Is something wrong, sister?" Luna asked.
"I think it's time we had a serious talk with the Elements of Harmony about their recent adventure." Celestia replied.
"So...why are we here again?" Rainbow said, bored.
"Because Princess Celestia has something important she needed to tell us about." Twilight said.
Just as she mentioned Celestia, the aforementioned princess walked into the throne room where the Elements of Harmony were all gathered. All the ponies (and Spike) bowed their heads in respect. Celestia chuckled to herself, placing a hoof on her mouth.
"Oh, you girls don't have to do that. We're friends after all." Celestia said.
"Celestia, why did you call us here if you don't mind me asking?" Twilight said.
"Well, it's about your recent adventure to this primordial land," Celestia explained. The girls knew instantly what the princess was talking about. Two days spent in that land felt like two months for them.
"What about it, Celestia?" Twilight asked.
"How exactly did you find this underground world?" Celetia asked.
"Well, just as I wrote in my letter, we fell into a massive hole in the Everfree Forest when we were helping Junior find his mom," Twilight explained. "What are you trying to say?"
In a sudden spark of magical energy, Celestia summoned a newspaper, flipped to one page in particular.
"It appears Ponyville was not the only place affected by that recent earthquake."
All the girls and Spike gathered in close together as Celestia floated the newspaper over to them—only for all of them to gasp at its contents.
On the page, Celestia flipped to read the headline, 'Massive Unidentified Creature Rampaging Through Lower Manehattan'. Below the headline was a photo of the aforementioned creature. It wasn't the best image: the creature was blurred, and you could barely make out its features. But the Mane 6 could clearly tell what the creature was. A dinosaur.
In Lower Manehattan, a young colt was licking an ice cream cone while he and his mother were walking down the street. While he licked his ice cream, his tongue accidentally pushed the ice cream scoop off the cone, falling on the concrete pavement.
"Aww, rats!" The colt exclaimed.
As the colt stared at his now ruined ice cream, he noticed the ground was starting to shake violently. Suddenly, he and his mother were shoved out the way by a stallion galloping in the same direction they were heading.
"Run! Run for your lives!" The stallion yelled.
"Well, I never! Somepony really has to teach that stallion some manners!" The mother huffed in frustration.
"Uh, Mom?" The colt asked, looking behind his mom. "What's that?"
The mother turned around and gasped in disbelief. She quickly pulled her son into an alley just as dozens of Gallimimuses ran through the streets of Manehattan. Anypony that was in the way was instantly trampled by the panicked herd.
The herd jumped over carriages and even crushed some as they landed on them. The Gallimimus herd finally dissipated, and everypony emerged from their hiding spots. Two stallions in particular, who emerged from behind a dumpster, looked into the distance as the Gallimimus herd ran off into another area of Manehattan.
"Phew! That was a close one!" One of stallions exclaimed.
"Yeah! But what were they running from?" The other stallion asked.
His question was unfortunately answered when a massive Carcharodontosaurus clamped its jaws on the stallions head. The poor pony could do nothing but scream as the dinosaur tossed him into the air before swallowing him whole. The other stallion tried to flee, but the Carcharodontosaurus unintentionally crushed him under its foot as it began to move.

The other ponies quickly started to gallop away as the massive theropod roared out into the sky.
"And it's not the only place being affected. Reports are coming in from as far as Griffinstone about mysterious creatures emerging from massive pits in Equus. " Celestia explained.
"Am I the only one here wondering why these critters are coming out of their homes and wreaking havoc on ours?" Applejack asked.
"I mean, these dinosaurs are ancient, but they're still animals. They're probably just curious," Fluttershy explained. "Wouldn't you be curious if a hole randomly appearing in your home?"
"And if these creatures continue to enter our world," Celestia said. "we might be not be at the top of the food chain for much longer."
The group shuddered at what Celestia was implying.
"What are we going to do, Celestia?" Twilight asked her mentor.
"I'm happy you asked that, Twilight. As of now, I'm establishing a team to help control these creatures," Celestia explained. "I'm calling them the D.D.F, the Dinosaur Defense Force."
"Okay, am I the only one who thinks that name sounds awesome?!" Rainbow Dash exclaimed.
"We'll establish teams at different outposts all over Equestria and beyond, wherever these holes have opened up," Celestia continued.
"Not to sound rude, Princess, but how does this relate to us?" Applejack asked.
"To answer your question, Applejack,I was hoping you girls would fulfill the roles of Ponyville's first D.D.F team. It will of course be a challenge, especially with the responsibility of being the Elements of Harmony already on your hooves," Celestia explained. "But with Ponyville's close proximity to one of these entranceway, I fear your town is at very high risk of one of these creatures getting too close for comfort,"
The mares looked to each other, unsure of what to say. Finally, Twilight spoke up.
"Princess, are you sure we're right for the job?" Twilight asked, cautiously.
"I'm sure of it. This is, of course, only temporary and until I've established more teams, I couldn't think of any other special group of ponies more capable for the task," Celestia said, smiling and placing her hoof on her star pupil's shoulder.
Twilight looked back at her friends and to her surprise, they were all nodding in agreement. The princess of friendship thought to herself for a few moments before looking back at her mentor, a determined expression on her face.
"When can we start?"
News spread like wildfire about the recent shocking discovery that dinosaurs were still alive and living beneath Equus' surface. This, of course, caused widespread panic. Many worried about the potential threat these creatures brought with them; these worries only increasing after many learned about the incident in Manehattan. But after the establishment of the D.D.F., most of these worries subsided.
However, one thought remained: Would these new teams be enough?
