Chapter 1: Oh, sh*t this is really happening!**
The first thing you need to know about me is my name: I'm Marcus Adams, but everyone calls me Marc. Not the most original nickname I know. The second thing you need to know is that I'm a brony, and my favorite pony is Princess Celestia. I mean come on, dealing with the sun and moon for a thousand years and having to deal with Discord and run a kingdom? She deserves some love. And third: I'm a supernatural nut. Supernatural as in supernatural, not that TV show. I even have some really rare books about things like magic and spirits. As a matter of fact I was reading a book just like that when it happened.
I was walking home from my high school, reading that book I mentioned before – a Guide to the Other and Otherworld – and I was passing by a field that hadn't been used in years. No one lived around this area, the ground was too unstable, and several abandoned and collapsed houses were still around.
I was walking past just such a ruin when I heard a large boom. I looked up and there was a fireball falling right towards the house. I started panicking, but then I saw something before impact. The mass inside the fireball was white... and it had wings. I ran into the ruin – now consisting of even less empty frames than before – and I saw something that would change my life forever. Princess Celestia, injured and barely conscious, was in the bottom of the impact crater. On an impulse that all bronies posses I jumped into the crater to try and help.
“Uh, P-Princess Celestia? Uh, what happened? Will you be okay? Oh, gods what do I do!?” I said. I was panicking, completely freaking out... then I heard the laugh. That familiar laugh, from a familiar voice.
“Really Celestia? Did you truly think that you could beat me? And now with you out of the way, your precious ponies will be too disheartened to use the Elements like last time.” came the voice. I turned and he appeared. Discord, Spirit of Chaos and (according to himself) Disharmony. He laughed more and I looked around for some kind of weapon. I grabbed a broken pipe before a thought struck me. Wait, I'm trying to fight fucking DISCORD!? THE FUCK AM I THINKING!? Then I remembered the part of the book I had been reading just before this.
A Spirit may be slain a variety of ways, however they will always return unless a specific ritual is performed. The Spirit's physical body must be pierced through the heart, and the following incantation recited;
Disperibunt. Ego tolle tuum pallium, ut mea.
The phrase translates as, 'Be undone. I take up thy mantle as my own.' As you may have guessed the ritual will pass on the Spirit's existence to the caster. The one that recites the incantation must become the new Spirit of whatever the one they slew was. It is a great burden and should not be taken lightly.
Well, now I know what I have to do. I just hope it works. Discord landed, and began walking towards us.
“Well, what do we have here? A new mortal to toy with.” he smirked. One more step and he was close enough. I tightened my hand on the broken pipe and lunged, piercing him right through his twisted heart. He just laughed.
“HA! Did you really think that you could beat me so easily? I am Discord! Spirit of Chaos and Disharmony!” he shouted. And I shouted back. I shouted back the last words he would ever hear.
“Disperibunt! Ego tolle tuum pallium, ut mea!” I yelled. His eyes widened, and then we were blasted away from each other. I looked up from my place on the ground and saw Discord convulsing, the pipe still lodged in his chest. Then he... exploded. Literally exploded, the pieces of his body turning to dust as they flew. And then a myriad of lights flew at me, pervaded my very being. In short it felt like I was having hot nails jammed into my brain while being slapped with a fish wrapped around a brick. It seemed to last a long time, but was actually only a few seconds.
“Who ever said that books were useless was an idiot.” I muttered to myself. I decided to look to see if I had been changed. Same hands, feet, face, can't tell if my eyes are the same, same hair- wait. When was I wearing a hat? I checked and sure enough I was wearing a fedora that had a brim about an inch and a half wider than normal. It was black. I looked down and saw I was wearing a white button up shirt, black dress pants, and black slip-on shoes.
“Change my clothes but not me. I'm fine with that.” I muttered. Then I turned and picked up the Princess. She was still conscious. “Don't worry Princess, I don't intend to harm you or your ponies. We can discuss things later, right now let's get you back to Equestria, and more importantly, to a hospital.” I said to her. She didn't reply.
“Okay, how do I do this? Just... focus on where I want to go I guess.” I really need to stop muttering to myself. I did just what I had muttered, focusing on the Canterlot Gardens. There was a tingling sensation followed by a flash of light and there we were. The gardens were in ruin, and the Mane 6 and Princess Luna along with others were sitting there looking forlorn. I cleared my throat and they looked up.
“I suggest getting her to a hospital.” I said, indicating the still conscious Celestia I was carrying. They gasped then ran forward. Celestia was levitated by a pair of unicorn guards, and before I knew it, they had taken her to the infirmary and had me surrounded, spears at the ready. Luna stepped forward, followed by the Mane 6.
“What manner of creature art thou? And why dost thou reek of Discord's vile power?” she asked, eyes narrowing.
“Well as for the first question, I'm a human. And for the second, I killed Discord.” they all gasped at the second answer.
“IMPOSSIBLE!” Luna bellowed. “How couldst thou have slain our ancient foe? 'Tis not possible to slay a spirit!”
“Actually it is. The only problem is... well you have to take that spirit's place. So yeah, I'm kind of stuck being the new Spirit of Chaos. Not exactly happy about it, but at least I'm not an insane Draconequus bent on casting Equestria into eternal chaos.” I said.
They blinked in surprise. “Well? Aren't you going to use the Elements on me? I could care less at this point. Not like I have any reason to exist.” I said in a depressed tone.
“Indeed. Use the Elements.” said Luna. The Mane 6, who were already outfitted with the Elements of Harmony, nodded and began to focus. Moments later I was engulfed by a beam of rainbow energy. Warm and tingly. Seems legit. A few moments later the beam stopped and I was still sitting there, not a statue. They all gasped.
“W-what trickery is this!?” yelled Luna.
“Not a clue Princess.” I said, just as surprised as them. “Well... now I can't even look forward to being a statue. Great. An eternity of being hated for something I had to do and I can't even be stone while I'm being hated.”
“Why didn't the Elements work?” asked Twilight Sparkle once she had recovered. I shrugged.
“Maybe because I'm not evil? Discord was evil so it imprisoned him. Nightmare Moon was evil, so it destroyed her, but didn't harm Princess Luna, who herself was not evil, despite being one with the Nightmare.” I said.
“Indeed. That seems to be the only reason why the Elements did not harm thee.” said Luna.
“Well. Time to wait I guess. Should I just sit here until your sister is recovered enough to pass judgment, or would you prefer if I stayed in the dungeons? Not much of a difference to me. Not like I have anywhere to go.” I said, once again in a depressed tone.
“My sister's injuries were not severe. She should be healed enough within the hour. We shall wait here. And thou can tell us about thyself and the events that lead to now.” declared Luna.
“Very well. I guess I should introduce myself first. I'm Marcus Adams, but everyone calls me Marc...”
