A harsh, cold world

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

As Sunny gets dressed, she can’t help but be relieved that she was finally able to leave the medical station and get back to the action with her friends. Not only did she miss them, but she was really eager to go out and find Izzy and probably Misty too. Now was as good a time as any. When she’s fully dressed, she walks out and looks around, instantly being hit with the extremely cold temperature. She shivers and hugs herself as she goes around, looking for Twilight or anyone who can help her. She sees a few unicorns going to The Crystal Tea Room and decides to follow them in.

She’s relieved to find it being a little warmer in here than out there and find her friends and everyone else in there.

“Sunny? You should still be resting.” Artemis says sternly as she walks over to her and helps her over to a table to take a seat.

“I’m fine. Honestly. I’m just still a little tired, but other than that, I’m good and I’m ready to go look for Izzy and Misty.” Sunny says, unexpectedly getting weary looks and side eyes from everyone which confuses her. “What? What’s wrong?” She asks and no one answers for a bit until Skylight speaks up.

“A few things actually. One: It’s way too dangerous and way too cold to start a random search right now. Two: We really need to focus on how we’re gonna stop that other you. And Three: Well…” She hesitates and at this point, Sunny is getting a bit annoyed and she knows where this is going but before she can say anything, Askari finishes what Skylight is trying to say.

“We saw how fast and skilled Misty was. We also saw Izzy draw her away but we didn’t see what happened to them after. As much as I hate to say it, for all we know, Misty might’ve-“ Askari says, but before she can finish her sentence, Sunny cuts in, sounding a bit desperate.

“N-No! She didn’t! Izzy's alive! I know she is… I know it.” Sunny says and just by looking at her, everyone can tell that she wants to believe that more than anything even though she has her own doubts. “Izzy wouldn’t allow herself to die until she successfully helped Misty. She’s stronger than that.” Sunny says firmly, looking around at everyone.

“We know Sunny… We know she is. And we know she’s still out there somewhere, but right now, I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to go anywhere. Without your magic, you’re a sitting duck.” Thunderbird says, reminding Sunny of her current lack of her magical powers.

“Wha- So what? Am I a liability now?” She asks, instantly getting a response from Twilight.

“No! No, of course you’re not. It’s just way too dangerous for you now without your magic. Besides, we’re looking for ways to get it back for you.” Twilight says, gaining a surprised look on her face along with everyone else when Sunny suddenly slams both her fists down on the table she’s sitting at and screams at her.

“I don’t care about my magic right now! Do I want it back?! Of course I do! But right now, I just… I just wanna see Izzy and know that she’s ok! That’s all… That’s all I want.” Sunny says, her voice breaking towards the end of her sentence, showing just how much distress she was in. Out of the corner of her eye, Twilight can see Rainbow Dash looking at her then she sees Rarity and Applejack looking at each other along with Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie and she instantly knows that they all know how she feels…and so does she. So she sighs and looks at Sunny.

“Alright. Just sit tight, I’m gonna check in with Sunset and Starlight to see if they’ve found anything, ok?” Twilight asks, getting a nod from Sunny and a soft “thank you” before turning around and using Alicorn empathy to communicate with both unicorns and their teams.

As Sunset and the Dazzlings kept making their way through the blizzard with Sunset on her own motorcycle and the Dazzlings flying above her, she couldn’t help but notice how much worse it had gotten and all around the world, it was a bunch of different catastrophes and natural disasters, from earthquakes to tornadoes to huge thunderstorms. It was weird to think that all this happened because a dark version of Sunny came out of nowhere, summoned more villains seemingly from the dead, and kicked all their asses. She knew there was more to it though. There always was.

Sunset, Starlight? Have you found anything?” She hears Twilight ask in her head all of a sudden. She still thinks she’ll never get used to that.

“Nope. Nothing on my end yet, just snow, ice, and more snow. We’ve been traveling for miles and haven’t seen a single sign of Izzy or that other unicorn. Don’t worry, we’ll keep looking though.” Sunset assures her and without her even being there, she can tell Twilight is relieved to hear that.

Thank you. I know this is a lot to ask, but it means a lot. Sunny’s really worried and it’s showing more and more with every minute she spends away from Izzy.” Twilight says and Sunset can’t help but pity the young Alicorn. She understood exactly how she felt.

“Yeah, I know the feeling. If something worse than this happened and I was away from Adagio, not knowing if she was alive or dead or injured or worse, I wouldn’t even know what to do or where to start looking.” Sunset says and before Twilight can say anything, they both hear Starlight speak.

Same for me with Trixie. I’d lose my mind if anything happened to her and I know it’s the same for you with Rainbow Dash, Twilight. But anyway, haven’t found anything on my side either. We ended up at Opaline's castle or…the spot where it was. There’s nothing here now but a giant crater…and a dragon skeleton.” Starlight says, causing both Sunset and Twilight to cringe a bit. They knew it was the dragon that Opaline had taken and that it had been killed by the explosion that Dark Sunny caused there. Poor thing… At least it didn’t suffer. “Hang on, I think we’ve got something. I’ll get back to you and let you know what we found.” Starlight says before going silent and Sunset sighs.

Well I’ll let you get back to it. Stay safe out there.” Twilight says and Sunset smiles a bit before responding.

“You too, and hey. Go easy on Sunny. I can’t put myself directly in her shoes, but I get how she’s acting, especially with everything she’s gone through, everything she’s lost and can lose.” Sunset says and Twilight doesn’t say anything but Sunset can tell she heard her and that she understands.

“You’re right. But we all still have a lot to lose… So let’s make sure we can keep the losses down to a minimum.” Twilight says, and with that, she goes quiet, leaving Sunset and the Dazzlings to their mission of finding Izzy. She sighs heavily, which manages to get the attention of Adagio, who was floating closest to her.

“Based on that sigh, I’m assuming you got into contact with Princess Twilight and she didn’t have the best news.” She guesses and Sunset chuckles and shakes her head.

“Something like that. Good news is that Starlight thinks her team might’ve found something. Which is better luck than we’re having.” Sunset says, getting nothing in response until Adagio flys a bit lower while still moving alongside her.

“Hey. Don’t worry, we’ll find something before you know it. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from each other, it’s to never give up. On anything. You wouldn’t let me and my sisters give up on ourselves, so we’re not letting you give up on this.” She says and Sunset slightly looks at her, slowly starting to smile before she nods.

“Thanks. I needed to hear that.” She says before looking forward again and continuing to ride in silence. It takes a bit, but eventually they hear something, causing Sunset to stop her motorcycle and the Dazzlings to stop right above her. “Do you three hear that?” She asks as she looks around for any sign as to what could be causing the sound.

“It’s kinda hard not to. It’s pretty loud. It sounds like…” Aria says, drifting off as she starts to close out her sentence. Luckily Sonata continues for her.

“Fighting… It’s coming from that way I think.” She says as she gestures to the right side of the road where a forest wasn’t too far from it. Just as they’re about to ask if she’s sure, a bright blue light flashes through the trees, followed by the sound of an explosion. “Told ya.” Sonata says a bit smugly, getting a eyeroll from Aria and an annoyed huff from Adagio.

“Let’s go!” Sunset says as she gets her motorcycle moving again, driving it towards the forest as the Dazzlings follow closely behind until they have to fly over the trees as Sunset drives through them. The light continues flashing every few seconds and the sounds of fighting get louder as time goes, making it easy to determine the exact location of the battle. Until suddenly, the front wheel of Sunset’s motorcycle gets caught on something and flips forward, causing her to have to jump forward off of it and take a bit of a tumble right into a tree. She hears her bike crash next to her and looks at it, seeing it damaged as it also took a tumble. “Aw damn. I loved that bike…” She groans, annoyed and a bit saddened…but she has to stay focused.

She gets up, groaning and wincing in pain as she does but quickly shaking it off and starting to run towards the battle. She runs for about a minute until she gets there and sees… a bunch of villains either laid out flat on the ground unconscious or frozen in place with an exhausted looking Izzy standing in the middle of them all, panting heavily and holding what was once her sword and is now just the handle of the sword.

“Holy shit… Haha, we’ve been looking for you!” Sunset laughs, getting Izzy’s attention and putting a smile on her face as well.

“Glad I happened to be here at the time then.” Izzy says, letting out a breathy laugh until she hears Misty coughing and she goes over to her with a worried luck, seeing the area around her eye’s darkening even more…just like what happened to Sunny in the past. Sunset kneels by her and checks Misty’s temperature while talking to Izzy.

“Sorry we couldn’t get to you sooner. These villains seem to be almost everywhere we look. Plus they’re relentless.” Sunset says, looking behind herself to see the Dazzlings just now managing to get down to them, only knocking down a tree or two.

“Eh, it’s fine. Besides, these guys were doing nothing but keeping me warm. It’s gotten so cold that even I’m starting to feel it.” Izzy says as she starts trying to warm Misty back up. Sunset gets an idea and reaches out a hand, using her magic to make a ball of fire around it. Izzy feels the warmth from it and instantly starts moving Misty a bit closer before sitting by it and warming up herself like someone would around a campfire or a warm fireplace on a cold night. “Thanks.” Izzy says with a smile, causing Sunset to smile back and nod.

“No problem, but we really can’t stay here long. We need to get you both back to Bridlewood. Sunny's really worried about you.” Sunset says, causing Izzy to let out a long sigh of relief, which confuses Sunset a bit.

“I knew that wasn’t her I saw in Maretime Bay. I knew it!” Izzy says firmly, seeming to relax and Sunset can easily tell that she saw Dark Sunny but still didn’t know the full story of what was going on.

“Yeah, it’s a long story. But we’ll explain on the way.” Sunset says, getting a nod from Izzy before they both gather the supplies that Izzy got from Maretime Bay and the Dazzlings help move Misty and the sled she was in. She’s put on Sonata’s back and so is Izzy. Sunset places a spell on Misty that would keep her from falling off before she climbs onto Adagio's back. “Ok, I think we’re set.” Sunset says before the Dazzlings take off into the air, Adagio quickly swooping down and using her tail to grab Sunset's motorcycle on their way out of the woods and back to Bridlewood.

Meanwhile, With Starlight’s Team

It was hard to see at first, but Starlight was definitely sure of it now. One spot of the area, specifically the ocean and the cliff that was by it…was not covered in snow. In fact, that whole area was seemingly steaming. It was almost as if that specific area couldn’t get frozen over. She walks a bit closer, Trixie, Tempest, and Sunburst following closely behind. “You guys see that too…right?” She asks, looking back at them and seeing them nod.

“We didn’t at first, but now? It seems like we shouldn’t have missed that the first time.” Tempest says and Starlight agrees as she gets to the edge of the cliff, looks down and…begins to feel something…strange yet eerily familiar. When the others get close, they feel the same thing.

“That’s kinda creepy…why does it feel so familiar when we’ve never been here before?” Sunburst asks, trying to go over all the possibilities in his head.

“I don’t think it’s the place that feels familiar Sunburst…” Trixie says as she also tries figuring out what feels so familiar and why.

“But maybe it’s something that’s contained here.” Starlight says, her eyes lighting up as she finally figures out why this feels so familiar. “We need to tell Twilight about this. Come on, let’s head back before someone sees us.” Starlight says before they all start to head back to Bridlewood. Before she leaves, Starlight looks over the edge of the cliff one more time and swears she sees a little flash of multiple colors for a split second when she does. She smiles a bit when she sees it. Following the others, she knows that if she’s correct, then whatever was down there…could turn the tide of this war and give them a chance at beating Dark Sunny and all of the villains…once and for all.

Maretime Bay

“I know I wasn’t in this body at the time when it happened, but consider all this torture I’ve been putting you through as payback for you and Sombra leaving me to deal with Twilight and her pathetic friends and army by myself all those years ago.” Dark Sunny says with a slight hint of anger in her voice and madness in her eyes as she glares at the injured and disheveled Opaline, who was hanging by her arms and legs in front of her, bound in chains with a magic dampening ring on her horn. Opaline coughs up blood before slowly lifting her head to look at Dark Sunny and responding.

“You should’ve known you couldn’t win in the past Midnight… not with the way you were fighting. You refused to use your full power against Twilight, then against Sunny and it cost you both battles. But I see that now you’ve decided to fully stop holding back. Good for you.” Opaline says with a weak smirk that is quickly punched off her face by Dark Sunny. Her face is then grabbed and she’s forced to look Dark Sunny in the eyes.

“Don’t forget that even with me not using my full power, they still just barely beat me. Meanwhile, you were using all the power you could and after they beat you, they still had enough energy to keep fighting. No one died. No one was broken. You ran away and almost got yourself killed. All those skills and powers and yet the only thing you did right was open the container that was keeping my magic inside it, leading to my resurrection.” She says with a large amount of venom in her voice before she roughly pushes Opaline's face away. “You call yourself a Queen but you are nothing but a failure, just like all those other fools before and after you. Except me of course. And I say that because I don’t plan to fail this time. No more taking my time. No more playing with my food.” Dark Sunny vows as she starts walking off.

“One way or another, all those foolish, so-called ‘heroes' will suffer…and they will die.” She says before she hears Opaline chuckle while trying not to cough up more blood.

“And what if, dare I hope, you’re the one who dies instead?” She asks, causing Dark Sunny to suddenly whirl around and put her face close to hers.

“I will not die!” She growls out angrily as the building shakes from the amount of power her anger was generating. “Not this time. Sunny and Twilight are welcome to try but they are too weak to do it. And with chaos on my side and making me stronger than ever, they stand no chance.” Dark Sunny says, her eyes glowing even more to emphasize her point.

“You say that now until they bring the world back together and there is no more chaos for you to feed on.” Opaline says, getting a glare from Dark Sunny…then a chuckle.

“Luckily… I have a plan for that.” She says before the doors to the room open and Stormcutter, Nightshade, Titania, and Ragnar all come in with a corrupted Changeling following closely behind. Dark Sunny growls in annoyance.

“Sorry to disturb you my Queen, but we have news-.” The changeling says but before he can even fully finish his sentence, Dark Sunny fires a magic blast towards him, sending him flying into a wall and making a huge hole in his chest, killing him instantly. Dark Sunny glares at his body for a bit before closing her eyes, breathing in and out, then opening them and looking at her four deadliest soldiers.

“Report…” She says, quickly trying to forget that she asked for no interruptions before she kills them too. Nightshade steps forward and starts signing what the Changeling was trying to say. The more she tells Dark Sunny, the more intrigued she becomes before a smirk slowly forms on her face.

“So they found two of Sunny's little friends and they’re looking for ways to bring her magic back, huh?” She asks before she walks out, signaling for them to continue torturing Opaline. Her smirk grows as she hears Opaline’s screams while she comes up with a good plan at the same time.

“Well then…time for a little chaos.”
