"Look, dad, I caught a grasshopper!"

"I have a hypothesis that they only came after the empire reappeared and travel opened up; I haven't done any research on it yet though. I'm gonna do my school science project on the ensuing changes in the local ecosystems after the reintroduction of ponies to the area."
Shining nodded in astonishment. "That sounds like a really great project. I bet your auntie would love to help you with it, too. You remind me so much of her."
Remedy Star smiled at that thought, viewing it as the highest of accolades. She wanted to study under the Princess of Friendship just like her mother did. "I can't wait to see her again."
"She'll be here in a couple of weeks," he replied, playfully hyping up his family's upcoming visit to the Crystal Empire.
Just then, Flurry Heart popped around her father's side to examine the bug still sitting on her daughter's hoof. She stretched out a foreleg, startling the creature into the air. Remedy yelped in surprise as the hopper buzzed away past her ear.
The two laughed at her reaction, then shared a sentimental look that turned to a knowing amorous one that went undetected by the twelve year old. The three adult ponies trotted leisurely down the dirt walk in the sinking afternoon sun as Remedy went on a self-guided nature adventure, weaving through the treeline, a snow white blur flashing between rocks and bushes. "Grandma," called Remedy from down the hall.
Cadance blinked, suddenly realizing that she'd been spacing out in the mirror for probably minutes.

Remedy cocked her head to the side. "Then, can we do something together?"
Cadance smiled. "Want to make cookies?"

Her grandmother laughed at her eagerness. Advanced as she was, no foal could resist the allure of sweets, even a twelve year old one.

"That looks amazing ," marveled Remedy.
"Yes it does," muttered Cadence absently, still eying the bottles. "Uh… well, here's the list; why don't you start getting out the ingredients and I'll get a bowl."
The girl nodded exuberantly and quickly set to work, rummaging through the cupboards.
Cadence snuck a corkscrew out of a nearby drawer and wandered over to the wine rack. She loved Remedy but never imagined becoming a grandmother so young or… any of the other things in her life for that matter.

The two moms sat with their shopping haul at a shaded bench beneath a spreading tree. "No," she shrugged.

Cadance sighed frustratedly at her predictable rebuff. It was the same story every time. She wasn't even looking at other stallions for fun, or at least wouldn't ever admit to doing so. She had almost a religious devotion, honoring what she had with Shining as if she'd taken a blood oath at the altar. Flurry screwed up her face skeptically. "Luna and Celestia are like a jillion years old and you don't see them dating or getting married, even after retiring."
Cadence clenched her eyes shut. "Ugh. Okay, fair point but you know what else Luna and Celestia don't do? " She shot a strained expectant gaze at her daughter as she waited for her to connect the dots but they just stared into each other for an awkward moment in what she suspected was just another deliberate stonewalling tactic.
"Listen, you're a princess which means you can demand the highest caliber of mates and you should take advantage of that. You don't have to waste your time sifting through the dregs like so many commoners. I've got a whole catalog of handsome, high profile… well endowed guys and they will trip all over themselves to get in line for you."
"But, I just don't see the point," shrugged Flurry in earnest. "Dad is everything I want in a stallion all rolled into one. How could I possibly find a way to replace what we have? You chose the best."

Her forehead creased with genuine concern. Shining wouldn't be around forever… and then what? Flurry recoiled from the thought as if she'd found a snake in her bedsheets. She tried to push that issue to the back of her mind and distract herself with something more immediate and less melancholy.
"Well, I mean," she fumbled weakly. "Maybe we can make a schedule for now for taking turns with dad."
"I don't want a schedule ," blurted Cadance defiantly with a mouth full of ice cream bar. "I want my husband back. I want you to transition to a normal, sustainable relationship with a non relative. Cadance sighed and looked up to see her granddaughter pacing in tight circles near the climbing wall. "Remedy's fillyhood is fading and she deserves a real father."
"She already has one."

The two quickly stowed their conversation as Remedy shambled back to join them.
"I don't feel well," she grunted.
"What's wrong?" asked Flurry, finally finishing her cone of ice cream soup.

"Nothing like that is going to happen," laughed Shining dismissively. "You're overreacting."
"No, I'm not," she snarled. "That's the same shit you told me last time and now your daughter is your second wife… At least on paper I'm still number one."
"Cay, you're not in competition," he put gently. "Our relationships are different and my feelings for you haven't changed."
Cadance was milliseconds away from veering off topic to force Shining to explain how his relationships with them were different in any meaningful way but instead shook her head dubiously. "Say what you want about that but this kind of behavior is a slippery slope and we all have the receipts."
Flurry frowned, feeling personally attacked by the remark. "Listen, we are her parents and it's ultimately our decision how to handle this."
Those words felt like a dagger in Cadance's heart. Her husband's child with another mare. It was out of her jurisdiction. She was a better parent than either of them. Flurry was beyond the pale here. If they were anyone else, they'd never get away with this.
"You say that like what you're proposing isn't a felony and overwhelmingly frowned upon by society," Cadance retorted coldly.
Flurry and Shining exchanged glances as if having a serious private meeting via telepathy.
Flurry threw up her hooves. "Okay, fine. We can go through all the song and dance of trying conventional treatments but when it gets bad and nothing else does the trick, I don't want her to suffer needlessly for as long as I did. It's not like we're going to force her into doing something she doesn't want to do. If she really wants to tough it out, I guess that's her choice but we will suggest a gentle rutting session with Shining as an option to her. Deal?"
In a sane world, it would have been off the table entire. Cadance said nothing for a long while. They'd become so unreasonably detached from what was normal. This was just shallow placation for her. They had no desire to take the right path; they wanted the quick and easy way that would screw up Remedy the same as it did Flurry and now she was helping continue the cycle. They were going in looking at it as an inevitability.
"I can see it's the best I'm going to get," she grumbled in finality. "But don't even bring it up until the end." - - -
The three girls returned to town immediately under Cadance's insistence and paid a visit to the pediatric drug center. They scoured the estrus aisle before sitting down for a MagiColt fitting. Crash Cart waited patiently as a stern looking castle guard rifled through his saddlebag. He smiled timidly, trying to lighten the mood and appear non threatening.

"Background's good," came a disembodied voice from inside the post.
"You're clear," grunted the guard. He slapped an admission bracelet on Crash's forehoof before he loaded up with his saddlebag once more. Then Remedy teleported them straight into the throne room without warning.
"Mom?" she called. In front of Crash, Grandma was mom and mom was sister but Flurry Heart was busy in town for the day and wasn't in the castle.
Shining and Cadance sat side by side in their respective thrones in the middle of an audience with an ordinary looking crystal mare. Thankfully Shining was the one addressing the visitor at the moment. Their eyes flicked over at the intrusion momentarily but the discourse did not falter.
Cadance turned to Remedy and whispered. "Honey, you know you need to wait before just barging in here and talking while we're having meetings. What is it?"
"Ugh, sorry. Do you have any more of the… herbal tea." The stuff seemed to take the edge off of her heat but she wondered if it wasn't just ultimately a placebo.
"Yes, we do," she answered. Her train of thought was derailed as her eyes landed on the bundle of nerves that was Crash, standing beside her. "Oh, who's your friend?"
"This is Crash Cart. We're doing a science project together; that's why I brought him over."
"Oh, so you're Crash. Remedy has spoken about you before. Welcome to the castle."
"He- hello, your majesty," he quivered before bowing woodenly.
Cadance stifled a giggle. Science project , she thought. For a moment, her mind had entertained the thought that perhaps she'd brought home a coltfriend. It wouldn't surprise her at all if he was her type.
Cadance's eyebrows suddenly shot up in explosive intrigue. Wait a minute, this gangly dork was the answer to her prayers. He could be the one to ice Remedy's heat.
After four days, she was running out of time and ways to divert Remedy's discomfort and the frustration in the castle was palpable. The meeting ended and Shining turned to her. "What was that?" he asked in alarm.
"What was what?"

"I would be sad," interrupted Remedy matter-of-factly.
"I know," she swallowed. Cadance paused to rub her right eye and keep the tears inside. "I can't… I just… What that would do to the empire… the Crystal Heart. I was a princess before I was a wife and I can't let all of everything fall apart because of my failings as a partner."
Velvet shook her head aghast. "You didn't fail him; he failed you."
"I know but I chose him. I took on the burden of rulership. We started a family. It's all knotted together… I wish he'd never laid a hoof on Flurry but I also wouldn't trade Remedy for anything. I can't have both."
Remedy, who had moved into Shining's chair after he left, leaned in to hug her grandma. Cadance squeezed her back.

She turned to look down at her granddaughter, gripping her solemnly by the shoulders. "Remedy, I want you to promise me something. Please promise me that whatever you do, make your husband and your dad different ponies. I know you love your mom and dad but don't get sucked into the same trap."
"Okay, grandma."
The company fell silent, ruminating on her dire plight before Night let out a fatigued sigh.
"Well, it's past my bedtime." He spun out of his chair with a grunt and stretched his old bones on the floor. His wife followed suit and took his foreleg.
"Thank you, Cadance. It was… unforgettable. I know it's a shit sandwich I can't quite understand but I respect your decisions regardless."
She watched the two traipse away, jealous of what they still had.
